Did you miss World Glaucoma Week?
www.femalefocusonline.com
If you did, here is your chance to take another look. It's very important. Glaucoma is sometimes known as 'the silent thief' because it is symptomless, and many people don't even realise they have it due to the gradual onset nature of the condition. It is a common eye condition which can be treated, but early detection is essential. If left untreated, glaucoma can cause visual impairment and damage that cannot be reversed. On the plus side though, if it is detected and treated early enough, further damage to vision can be minimised or prevented. So regular eye tests are vital. You should have an eye test at least every two years, or more frequently if advised by your Specsavers optometrist, for example, if you have a close relative with glaucoma. Cecilia at Jávea Specsavers checking the What is Glaucoma? back of the eye to help make an Optic The disease happens when the naturally-occurring fluid inside the eye does not drain Nerve assessment. properly, causing a build-up of pressure. The condition often affects both eyes. There are two types – chronic glaucoma which develops slowly with subtle changes to your vision, and acute glaucoma which develops rapidly with a sudden, painful build-up of pressure in the eye. Glaucoma is actually one of the biggest causes of blindness affecting about 80 million people worldwide. Testing for glaucoma It is important to check regularly for glaucoma. This is because chronic glaucoma is painless and usually damages the outer edge of the vision and works slowly inwards. Without regular checks, you may not notice a problem until the glaucoma is near the centre of your vision. During an eye test we will do an Eye pressure test, a Visual field test, and an Optic nerve assessment. All three tests are quick and painless. Treatment of glaucoma If your Specsavers optometrist suspects glaucoma, you will be referred to an ophthalmologist for further tests and if a diagnosis of glaucoma is confirmed, they will then be able to advise on treatment which in most cases is simply eye drops and regular follow-ups. So, being tested for glaucoma is both important and simple. The key message is “Do not delay having an eye test, because if left untreated, glaucoma can cause visual impairment and damage that cannot be reversed”. There are Specsavers Ópticas stores in Jàvea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia on the Costa Blanca and in Santa Ponça in Mallorca, Marbella and Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol. One day I woke up, along with many others, to discover the world that we know has changed and after listening to the news, it is not unusual to feel anxious. There is nothing we can personally do to stop all these horrors but we can make our family as secure as possible, as most accidents do happen in the home, and here I can help you. With insecurity and fear all around us, extra protection from accidents could be most helpful, whilst life insurance is especially needed and you will be delighted to know that Liberty Seguros policies are not only superior, they are cheaper, than if you had gone via a bank. Did you realise that the Accident policies work side by side with your existing policies? Options for the Accident policies include Leisure, for both non-professional sports and leisure activities, a Self Employed option and the Road Traffic Accident policy, which gives you protection as a pedestrian, cyclist or passenger. Accidents do happen and to have extra protection for a very small premium could be comforting, secure and sensible for you and your family. Not only should you think of yourself, but if you have a mortgage, the wisest thing to do would be to take out a mortgage protection policy. These are designed to cover the cost of your mortgage, should you die, to ensure your family’s home is protected for their future. Can I suggest you discover more information on making your family as secure as possible by visiting one of my offices, telephone or email info@jennifercunningham.net, or visit my website www.jennifercunningham.net

In true British style the weather has been the topic of conversation recently. Some reports say that Spain has seen the wettest March in 100 years. The reservoirs have been so low that it really was needed. Hopefully April now will see the start of drier weather for Easter and my sister and family visiting.
It will be our first visitors for a long time so I will have to remember how to host. Got the essentials of Easter eggs already, so really there is nothing more for me to do. The N-332 are a group of Spanish Traffic Police Officers who decided to create a Facebook group to inform all ex-pats and tourists about Spanish traffic laws as they think it is unfair to fine them for breaking rules they didn't know about. You can find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DrivingSpain/ and follow them to keep up to date as they only share official information. Torrevieja Translators in collaboration with N332 bring you the main changes in road safety laws that came in to effect from 21 March 2022: The 20 key points of the new road safety laws; 1. Do I need Insurance for my Electric Scooter? by Natalie Kaufman - Insurance Altea
Electric Scooters have become very popular over the past few years. They are a convenient way of getting from A to B, they run on a rechargeable battery so no emissions and low running costs, and are inexpensive to buy. But one question we are asked over and over again is, do they need to be insured? We all know that motorbikes and cars are obliged to be insured, so what about electric scooters? At present, it is down to each municipality to decide with Benidorm, Barcelona and Alicante requiring you to have insurance. However, whether compulsory or not, the DGT advises all electric scooter users to take out insurance as a measure to protect themselves and others. The advantages of having insurance are obvious, to cover the insured financially and provide protection against all types of traffic accidents.

Understanding the risks of investing
M
ost of us will have a financial goal, whether that be a short-term objective such as saving to pay off a loan, or a longer-term project such as making sure retirement is as comfortable as possible. But do you fully understand the risks behind investing? In our 45+ years' experience, we have seen virtually every type of investor. We have come across people with more money under the mattress than in their bank, to others who are willing to put everything they have on the next Cryptocurrency that comes to market. These are rare cases though, and the vast majority of us will sit somewhere between the two examples above. Risk is defined in financial terms as the chance an outcome or investment return does not match expectations but for us it goes above and beyond this. We also see risk as a personal characteristic or sentiment, one which is often determined by a client's own unique circumstances. When discussing risk, we have found that the average investor automatically thinks about the possibility of losing money due to taking too much risk, but what about the other side of the coin? What about losing out on gains or falling behind your objective due to utilising assets too cautious for your appropriate level of risk? Take too little risk and you may not reach your goals. Many people will know what their investment objective is and how much they need by a given time, although not many will fully understand their attitude to risk and how much of a risk they are able, or willing, to take. This is where the help of a financial adviser could pay dividends, as further discussions may help uncover considerations not yet thought of. Choosing the right risk profile for you involves targeting sufficient risk to achieve your investment goals but at the same time ensuring this level does not exceed your risk tolerance (willingness to take risk) or your risk capacity (ability to cope with losses). Important to remember is that every asset worldwide will have some level of risk, whether that be money invested in properties (nontenancy, housing market dips), money in bank accounts (default risk of the bank/ interest not keeping up with inflation) or simply money stored in cupboards at home (no potential for growth). In today's market of low interest rates and high inflation, investors find themselves in a position of having to accept at least a small amount of risk in order to see some real return on their money. The key here is to fully understand risk and how best to manage it given your own goals and objectives. If you would like to find out more or have a free consultation to analyse your position, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Always Drive in the Centre Lane
Golfing Tip by Altea Golf Club
The first drive off the tee is usually a power shot where the aim is distance and accuracy. But how often does your drive come up shorter than expected especially considering the effort put into the swing? One area to look at is where are you making contact between ball and driver. Centering the contact is most effective but did you know that for example, if you hit the ball with the bottom of the club face, you’re losing up to 6% of ball speed which can mean falling 10 metres short of where you should be? Not ideal. So how to improve? Well our tip of the month is all about practise and discipline. Start off practising at ½ speed and work on accuracy. Don’t do anything else until you can hit 3 consecutive balls off dead centre of the club face. Then, and only then move up to 60% speed, with same 3 dead centre swings, then ¾ speed, then 90%. Then and only then, really go for it and see how much more range you get. Altea Golf has a driving range and coach who can really help all aspects of golf, making your next round not only more enjoyable, but also a winning round. See advert alongside for more details.
FITNESS TIP OF THE MONTH The pelvic floor, the great forgotten. Do you suffer from urine loss when practicing sports, laughing, coughing or sneezing? The pelvic floor is made up of various muscles that close the abdominal cavity in its lower part and support organs such as the bladder the rectum and the uterus in women. It can be weakened by disuse and strengthened by exercise. Your pelvic floor muscles can be consciously controlled and trained. Strengthening these muscles will actively support your bladder and bowels by improving their control and reducing the likelihood of feces, urine and flatulence. As with other muscles in the body, your pelvic floor muscles will get stronger with a regular exercise program. This will be equally important for men and women. There are specific exercises and breaths that can be learned from a personal trainer, if you need professional assessment you can contact Ánimae and we will gladly and discretely help you. Bored of your current look?
www.femalefocusonline.com
Big changes in our life often motivate us to develop a new look, change of seasons often have a similar effect. Are you bored with your current look? If the answer is yes, it’s time to take action! A great start is a new hairstyle which can transform your facial appearance by emphasising different features. A hair restyle appointment not only sets the scene for a new look, it gives you and your stylist time to discuss what you are wanting; trust your stylist and be open to new ideas to get the best results, be brave it’s only hair and it grows! If you have long hair a length change or the addition of layers or a fringe can be refreshing. If you have always styled your hair a specific way switch it up and whatever you typically do try the opposite; curl it, straighten it, braids, updo, accessories… At your appointment have pictures of likes and dislikes as a guide and talk to the stylist about how you manage your hair because if you are a wash and go gal, some styles may not be suitable. A complete change of colour or perm will complete the look. It’s amazing how much your eyebrows can change your face. They frame your face in a way that can soften and balance your look, and they can add length and definition to your face, so a good way to achieve this is an eyebrow tint and shape, also consider lash tinting which is also great if you don’t wear makeup. Eye lash extensions mean you wake up every day with gorgeous lashes that enhance your eyes and it looks like you’ve already applied mascara! They are completely customisable to the look you want, whether natural or dramatic, at Mimiskru we have lash technicians that can work their magic for you! If you wear glasses for reading or just sun glasses, add to your new look by investing in a new pair, go for a variety of colour, frame thickness and shape in a range of styles that suit your face, so you can match your glasses to your outfit and change up your look. Next step is to tackle the wardrobe, for that you need Mimiskru Boutique in Las Marinas, Denia. So don’t delay book your appointments with Mimiskru Hair and Beauty today... What can a hydrafacial do for me? Is it worth it?

DR CAROLYN CARBASSE B.D.S. MSc
8 IN 1 MACHINE at Zen Smile Spa
A Hydrafacial is a medical-grade hydradermabrasion device that carries out a patented three-part regime — cleansing, exfoliating, and then infusing skin with intensive serums. Cleanse and Peel Step 1 Rather than blasting the skin with grit, as with a traditional dermabrasion, this gentler approach vacuums out pores while simultaneously delivering potent actives, which moisturise, brighten, plump, and protect. The machine's handpiece holds patented spiralised treatment tips equipped with "vortex technology" — the whirling force that both gives and takes away. Beyond the standard three steps, there are targeted boosters which aim at unique skin concerns, like brown spots or nagging lines. It appeals to nearly all ages, complexions, and concerns This is nice for teenagers with acne, adults with pimples, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation and for older patients with sun damage and even flaky pre-cancerous spots (as part of more serious treatments). Extract and Hydrate Step 2 How many times have you told a therapist to skip the extractions and squeezing for fear of redness or nextday eruptions (or simply because, they hurt and... Isn’t this supposed to be relaxing?)? HydraFacial has a strict no-torture policy, it is a relaxing, feelgood experience. It's never painful, in fact, patients compare the sensation to a “light massage." By combining vortex pressure with a clogpurging solution chosen according to the patient’s skin type, problems and needs, the device suctions impurities from the pores, no squeezing or pressing required. At the end, you can actually see all that was removed! And finally...

Fuse and protect Step 3 A HydraFacial saturates the skin’s surface with antioxidants and peptides to maximise your glow. Targeted, proprietary skin solutions are delivered to address specific skin concerns. Instant gratification in 30 - 60 minutes with zero downtime "HydraFacial hits the sweet spot. It's more than a basic spa facial, but less invasive than a laser treatment. Making it a rare unicorn among the no-downtime options, its payoff is immediately apparent: "We can quickly improve texture and tone, and even help conditions like acne, without any residual irritation or peeling. HydraFacial can be done the very same day as injectables and non-ablative light and laser treatments. We can even customise the tool's suction power, toning it down to tackle more delicate areas, like under the eyes or if we need to carefully loosen millia or boost circulation to clear dark circles. At Zen, we always recommend a light vacuuming of the lips to give them an instant, injection free, plump. We also further enhance the serums infused during the hydrafacial by applying LED phototherapy as an add on at the end of the facial, red light for older skin types to stimulate collagen production and blue light for acne prone skin.

It’s Never Too Early to Plan Your Future
by Ciudad Patricia
Getting older is a fact of life, none of us can avoid it. For some, life goes on as normal but for many others it brings it’s challenges. The villa’s getting too big to manage, the circle of friends gets smaller and smaller and the feeling of isolation and worry should “something happen” grows and grows. Of course, a great solution is to downsize and move into a retirement resort such as Ciudad Patricia. They offer independent living in an apartment in a beautiful resort where making new friends is easy, where social activities are laid on, where the grounds and facilities are second to none and where the health safety net gives you peace of mind. Many people leave it quite late on in life to find out and make the move. Often by then it’s a little too late for independent senior living and is seen as a last resort. By moving into Senior Resort Ciudad Patricia a little earlier, between 65 and 70 for example, you really do give yourself the opportunity to enjoy your so-called “3rd age” to the full. At Ciudad Patricia we hear only too often people say “I should have done this years ago”. When we’re young we’re told to save and plan for the future. What we see is that it’s never too early to plan your senior living arrangements. Resident’s journeys to Apartamentos Ciudad Patricia can often take years from first finding out to moving in.
DATE FOR THE DIARY 6TH MAY 11:00 OPEN MORNING AT CIUDAD PATRICIA It’s an important move and requires planning and consideration but it also requires knowledge which is why we will always welcome you to visit the resort, take a look at an apartment and find out how everything works - all with no pressure or obligation. re you suffering with Weight Gain? Whether it be a little or a lot, there are now specialised injections available to help kick start your metabolism so you can lose weight faster and more efficiently when following a controlled diet. Proper nutrition is essential to healthy living, successful weight loss and the overall well-being of the body. Seeking advice from a Nutritionist can help you to understand and stick to a diet plan based on your health, physical goals, and medical needs. You may be advised to have a stool or blood sample analysed, to rule out any underlying health problems and to identify the cause of the weight gain, as this can be due to various reasons one of them being Gut Dysbiosis. In your gut, there are trillions of microorganisms that make up your gut microbiome. When these become out of balance, dysbiosis occurs. If left untreated this can cause a range of chronic illnesses and conditions such as food intolerances, obesity, Chron’s disease, Type 1 diabetes and colorectal cancer. My Mother’s Journey “My mother celebrated her 99th birthday in February, this year. She had spent most of her life living in London. Finally, when she had to stop driving we decided to look at various options, where she could enjoy her independence but have the help if needed. At the beginning of 2014, she spent a couple of months at the Colina Club, in Calpe, for a trial. The dry winters, knowing help was close by and the availability of UK Sky and Freeview TV made it an excellent retirement location. After much discussion, she decided to make the Colina Club her home. My mother lived happily for many years in one of the independent living apartments, usually taking the free daily minibus into Calpe. As she became less able to complete household chores, we employed a local English lady to clean and cook for her. About two years ago when my mother needed more nursing care she moved into the Residencia, where I have visited her frequently. Despite her deteriorating health she has remained very happy and content, and in my opinion has been wonderfully looked after by an extremely caring, well trained and qualified staff. I have no hesitation in recommending the Colina Club retirement apartments and Residencia to anybody who wishes to live in more sheltered accommodation and enjoy good companionship, caring staff and near-perfect weather.” Dr. Peter Troughton. Contact details provided on request. The Colina Club was the first continuous care complex on the Costa Blanca and is still going strong today. We have been serving the expat senior community since 1991. The Colina Club offers you continuous care from our independent living apartments and when the day to day challenges become too much we offer you the Residencia, our fully licensed nursing and rest home providing you with a home where the staff are there to support you with assisted and full care. Why not give us a call; let's arrange a tour where we can personally answer any questions and explain the benefits of living here at the Colina Club, there's no obligation, of course, and certainly no pressure, but, together, we just may figure out the perfect solution for the next part of your journey. Call us on today, Apartments: 96 583 5226. Residence: 96 583 7310 or email us at mail@colinaclub.com and arrange your tour.

No Health Insurance? No SIP Card? Not a problem… You can still see a Doctor
Providing an English GP Service at a reasonable cost Since 1985 Dr Ignacio Poole has been providing an English type of GP Service from his convenient clinic at Jávea Arenal. For all those persons caught in the situation of living here in Spain but not yet part of the Spanish Health system, and with or without private insurance, should an illness strike there has always been the question of where to turn? Yes, you could turn up to your local Centro de Salud (Health Centre) but they will not always agree to see you, there could be a long waiting time, they may charge as much as 200€ for a consultation, and sometimes the consultation is not in English.
A much easier solution is to book an appointment with Dr Poole, who will provide advice and appropriate treatment / medication in English, and for only 50€ per consultation. That is a massive saving on what you could pay elsewhere. And even better, the 50€ can be reimbursed from the English system. Just call 640 150 160 to make your appointment. Anti-ageing cosmetic surgery provided locally, and always at a reasonable price. Dr Poole is also an International Master in Cosmetic Surgery, offering a wide range of procedures in minor and cosmetic surgery. • Eyelid adjustment improvement • Ear pinning • Face lifts • Batwing correction • Skin tag removal • Mole or Wart extraction • Double chin correction • Skin cancer and sun damage assessment These are just a few examples of what we can offer with confidence. Our clinic always offers a warm welcome, and offers a free information meeting to discuss any cosmetic improvements that you would like to consider. • Clinica El Arenal, Av Arenal 2, Jávea. Get your kicks on Route 99 Discover some of the smallest towns in the Valencian community by following the new Route 99 consisting of 24 towns with less than 100 residents. The United States has its historic highway Route 66 stretching across 4,000 kilometres from Chicago to Los Angeles taking you through the lesserknown interior of America. Now the Comunidad Valenciana has set up its own Route 99 to take people to the most uninhabited lands in this region. This route links 24 Valencian towns from Famorca to Herbés which all have one thing in common, less than 100 inhabitants. In the style of the Camino de Santiago, you have a passport to get stamped in each municipality you visit, either alone, with family, by motorbike, bicycle or on foot. Four of the towns featured in Route 99 are in the Alicante province - Benillup, Benimassot, Famorca and Tollos. These towns have all noticed more visitors since the Route 99 initiative was launched. “It is a good idea to get to make us known” Ismael Molines, Benimassot mayor, told Información. The Route 99 website - https://ruta99.gva.es - has information about the 24 towns and various routes you can take including how long to walk them and the level of difficulty. You can also get an official Ruta 99 backpack by visiting the website and downloading the passport to be stamped when you visit the towns. Once you have completed half of the route, 12 towns from three different provinces, scan it or take a photo and send it to ruta99@gva.es with details of where you want them to send the backpack. AFPO, the Association of Foreign Property Owners, based in Calpe, held a very successful meeting at the Diamante Beach Hotel, last month. Firstly Betty Gower, one of the first members of AFPO (member number 10) was thanked for her many years as a member, editor of the magazine and for all her committee work. The president presented her with a gift voucher, and she will be invited to have a meal with the other committee members. The AFPO interpreters service continues to provide help for many patients at the Calpe Centro de Salud. Afternoon appointments can be made calling 620 687 633. We are always looking for Interpreters to join the service. One of our new Interpreters was introduced at the meeting. Our Interpreters have been busy helping the staff at the Centro de Salud, arranging Covid injections for many people who have had their first vaccinations in many different countries. Guest Speaker - Marcos Iglesias, a British born International lawyer, based in Alicante and Salamanca, where he lectures at Salamanca University, was welcomed by the president. Rather than talk of specific taxes in Spain he offered to answer questions that members wished to enquire about in an informal way. Many questions evolved around Inheritance Tax and Marcos advised members to make sure they had a Testament/ Will, as the taxation process takes a long time and it will be dealt with much quicker if the deceased has made a Will at the Notary. He suggested it was far better to discuss the matter with a Gestor before hand. The next meeting will be the AGM, on Tuesday 24 May, in the Diamante Beach Hotel Salones, at 10am for 10.30am. Light refreshments will be served afterwards. For more information go to the website www.afpocalpe.com or call 639 637 520.

Last December the Montgo Chorale choir was delighted to be able to give their first performance for two years, a celebration of Christmas in the Loreto Church (commonly known as the Fishermen's Church), the lovely venue for the choir's previous Christmas concerts. As in other years, a collection was taken for Cáritas, the church’s charity that does such important and worthwhile work supporting local families in need. Despite the smaller audience due to Covid considerations, the audience's generosity resulted in a donation of 500€ to the charity. Choir representatives, including the Director, Aileen Lightfoot, met with Cáritas organiser Elly Van de Wel outside the church to present the cheque. A date for diaries! Pandemic permitting, the choir is presenting its next concert on 15 May at the Teatro-Auditorio in Beniarbeig, a new, and very attractive, venue for the choir. The programme will include works by Schubert, Fauré and Rutter. Further details will be announced nearer the date.

Thank you for "Praying for Ukraine" Organising any charity event is hard, to organise a successful event within 24 hours is pure genius. On Sunday 20th March Tracy at Kawana Bar managed it in style, raising over 1000€ (final figures are still to be announced) through the sale of dinners, a large raffle and an auction, all proceeds going to Val de Pop Ukrania. The whole event was fantastically supported by Paul van Velzen, The Singing Drummer (who was joined by Frank Abrams on the sax), The 20/20 Band, and Rik Kersten from Benidorm. From 12 Noon to 7pm the music was superb, with a fantastic atmosphere right from the word go. In particular, big thanks should go to Rockit, who was an absolute godsend and compered the whole day, and through his enthusiasm and vivacity pushed, pushed, pushed to get as much money as possible raised via the auction and raffle. A big congratulations and thank you to everyone for their generous donations and support. Well Done KAWANA BAR!

In February professional golfer Tony Peters took on the challenge of hitting 1,000 golf balls at La Sella Golf range. He decided to take on this challenge after losing a dear friend Lindy Humphrey to stomach cancer over Christmas after a 5 year battle. It was the same type of cancer that his father died from a few years ago. Jose (Director of golf) from La Sella Golf Club kindly provided the 1,000 range balls for Tony to hit with a full swing (no chipping), Campbell Lamont provided golf gloves and the banner was made free of charge by SRPrint in Ondara. Congratulations to Tony - it took him just under 5 hours which equates to hitting a full shot every 18 seconds and equates to around 35 rounds of golf in one day (He normally goes round a course in 72 shots but around 50% of them or chipping and putting). The Original Charity Shop and Library, Jávea, provides help to those in need
Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the Original Charity Shop and Library has received many requests to help Ukrainian Refugees. Initially we donated blankets and duvets to the collection point at Toscamar, and the Bomberos Voluntarios received 1,000€ for fuel and transport costs in order to deliver the collected items to Poland. We have since received a request from the Red Cross for financial help to replenish their food bank, which is almost empty due to a food delivery which failed to arrive. The Red Cross already provide food to many needy families in Jávea, and are now expecting to receive numerous Ukrainian Refugees. They have received an initial cheque for 1,000€ to help purchase the necessities. Following a request from HELP, we are a collection point for medication and surgical dressings, as well as baby food in jars. We have also donated 500€ towards the purchase of the baby food. If you would like to donate such items please deliver them to Carrer de Nancy 1, in Jávea’s Arenal. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 1pm. Thank you in advance for your generosity. CHICAS AMIGAS ENJOY AMANTE
The Chicas Amigas gathered in the picturesque setting of Amante Restaurant beautifully situated right above the sea on the edge of Moraira. After all the recent rain we were lucky and the sun shone on us, and even the chilly wind off the sea dropped. Forty four of us enjoyed a delicious meal, followed by a triple celebration - the eighth anniversary of the start of the Chicas group, and the birthdays of its founder Lynn Clark and also Lynn R.J. who produced a magnificent cake for us all to share. Many thanks to Orhan and his very efficient staff, and of course to the birthday girl Lynn, the organiser. Jan Adams

Women and Employment in the Marina Alta
Employment rights are being put under the spotlight in a project launched by the European Union of Women Marina Alta. Issues regarding employment contracts and freelancers’ rights were raised at the group’s AGM held at Jávea Golf Club on International Women’s Day, including: ● Women working without contracts and not being entitled to sick leave, maternity leave or holidays. ● Maternity and paternity leave in Spain and how it compares to other countries. ● Why companies may be reluctant to issue contracts. ● Rights and benefits of people working as autonomo. “We learned that headway has been made. Maternity leave duration has been increased and pregnant women who have no contract or 'autonomo' (self-employed) are entitled to assistance. Although there is still injustice and suffering,” said Kathleen Misson, Secretary of the European Union of Women Marina Alta. “It will be interesting to discover lessons learned from all points of view, with the aim of taking our findings to 'Mujeres en Igualdad' (Women in Equality, the Spanish equivalent of European Union of Women in Spain), who have members in parliament and access to invaluable resources and, most importantly, who have been drivers of change over the last centuries to improve situations including equality, gender violence, voting rights and employment conditions.” Over the next six months, the European Union of Women Marina Alta group will be talking to local workers and employers to help make improvements to people's lives. Please send an email to presidenteuw.margaret@gmail.com if you wish to share your views on employment contacts or working as autonomo in the Marina Alta region. The European Union of Women is a unique non-governmental organisation of women with a special purpose, bringing together the peoples of Europe in peace and prosperity through cooperation and friendship. It is part of the Confederación Nacional de Mujeres en Igualdad which, in turn, is part of the European Union of Women.
JUST FRIENDS
Just Friends is a social group in Moraira which started nine years ago as Solos Amigos by and for people on their own, mostly widowed. As time passed some people partnered, and although no longer ‘solo', we were still friends, so changed the name to fit. Our latest get together was for Sunday lunch with music at the Hilltop Bar, which coincided with the 85th birthday of Dick Crooks, well known for his saxophone playing at the Brinks jam sessions at Saxo. Many thanks to our indefatigable leader Jean Mudge, who also produced the rather explosive birthday cake! Jan Adams

Torrijas are typically prepared for Easter and are a humble dessert that is based on a slice of bread, soaked in milk, battered in egg, fried in extra virgin olive oil and flavoured to taste with syrup or, in this case, sugar and cinnamon. Traditional torrijas are usually prepared with a specific type of bread that is made for torrijas which is fluffier and thicker than usual. Ingredients • 1 loaf of bread from the day before or the specific bread for Torrijas (sold in most pastry shops). • 1.5 litres of whole milk. • 5 medium eggs. • 1 cinnamon stick, 1 vanilla pod, the peel of half a lemon • 100ml of Oporto wine • 300g of white sugar • 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon. • 1/2 litre of mild extra virgin olive oil Preparation: The first step is to prepare the ingredients used to flavour the milk. 1. Wash the lemon well and peel its skin finely, too much of the inner white skin will make the dessert bitter. 2. For this recipe you will need an entire open vanilla pod, but not the seeds inside. Cut the ends with a knife from one end to the other, opening it like a book and scrape the interior with the blade of a knife removing the seeds. Heat the milk on a medium heat, almost to boiling point. Remove from the heat, add the vanilla pod, the lemon peel and finally the cinnamon stick. Let everything rest for 5 minutes to infuse the milk. The milk must be lukewarm or cold when used to soak the bread. 3. Take a container to dip the bread in and fill it with the infused milk and some cold milk. Add (optional step) the Oporto wine to give this dessert a little kick, beat with a fork to mix the liquids well.
Spread some Sunshine Project keeping you up to date! As many of you know I started my project Spread some Sunshine in 2017. Following holidays and volunteer visits to Sri Lanka, I made good friends and decided I wanted to help more. Following retirement to Spain we arranged lots of fund raising events and sent money each month to support those those in need and to help build houses. Our initial aim was to provide foods to children in care homes and provide basic craft skills. Now in 2022, we are supporting 25 families by providing food parcels each month and creating habitable homes with running water, electricity, kitchen space, roofing and toilet. This is funded mainly through selling secondhand clothes and items from our shop 'Karunawa' in Jávea, Spain. Now in addition we have built Cinnamon Chalet in Ambalangoda for visitors to explore Sri Lanka, come relax and see our work, ALL rental income is fed back into the project. Our next project is already underway to build a SSS hub where we will help local villagers, we will have craft stalls, a sales shop, weaving skills and a learning centre. We always need your help to enable our work to continue... Volunteers, donations of clothing and items to sell. Our amazing project managers in Sri Lanka Sampath and Dilhani work tirelessly to feed our families and ensure all funds are used in the best way. If you would like to find out more visit our website: www.spreadsomesunshine.es or Facebook: Spread some Sunshine SL The photo shows visitors at Cinnamon Chalet.

4. Beat the eggs until they foam a little and add two tablespoons of infused milk, beat again and place on another plate to dip the Torrijas before frying. 5. Put a little extra virgin olive oil in frying pan and heat over a medium heat. While the oil is heating, bathe the slices of bread in the infused milk. 6. Turn the bread over so that it is well soaked but not dripping and pass it through the beaten egg that we have already prepared. From there put it directly into the pan of hot oil. Frying and final presentation of the torrijas 1. Fry the torrijas on all sides until golden brown. Use a fork to help frying around the torrija. Place the torrija on a plate lined with absorbent kitchen paper to remove the excess oil. 2. Fill a wide container with sugar and cinnamon powder. About two teaspoons of cinnamon powder for every 100 grams of sugar. Mix well with a fork. Dip the torrijas in this mixture, coating them well with sugar and cinnamon. 3. Let them cool and enjoy at room temperature or cold. Simply delicious. TOP TIP - The torrijas are better the next day. Calpe Bowls Club was founded in 1985 when we used the small four ring green at Paraiso Mar Apartments. In 2020 Calpe Tennis Club offered a space and we now have eight rinks and security that we never enjoyed before. We have room for bowlers, beginners and experienced, and will welcome enquiries from anyone interested. Please contact by email to: alisonedwards3@hotmail.com.
Last month, U3A Calpe held their first coffee morning instead of a general meeting. In spite of the cold, rainy weather around 45 enthusiastic members came to the Club de Tenis to enjoy a social morning with friends. The Travel and Membership tables were busy handing out cards and information. Freda Croasdell, Travel Treasurer, announced a new trip planned for the Christmas holidays and asked members to suggest ideas for future travel. U3A Calpe President, Wendy Down, thanked members for coming out in such bad weather and explained the new format of Coffee Mornings to be held 6 times a year, 3 General Meetings and 1 AGM. Following the success of this meeting, U3A Calpe is convinced this format is the way to go for future meetings. For more information please see www.u3acalpe.org

Why does Alcoy celebrate St George’s Day?
St George is the patron saint of England but he is also the patron saint of Catalonia, Venice, Genoa, Portugal and Ethiopia among others. He is also patron of Alcoy after miraculously saving the city from being defeated by the Moors on April 23, 1276. On that day, Alcoy was in danger of losing the famous Battle of Alcoy and surrendering to the blue-eyed sultan Al Azraq and his Moorish army. The Alcoyanos needed a miracle, which duly arrived in the shape of a huge warrior sitting on top of a white horse standing at least 60 hands tall. The giant warrior was armed with a massive bow and arrow which he fired into the middle of the Moorish army - and they fled. As the date was April 23, the Alcoyanos realised their saviour was the great St George and they, therefore, made him their patron. In honour of the miraculous appearance of St George, Alcoy built the Iglesia de Sant Jordi. The church is decorated with a grand mural representing St George coming to the Alcoyanos' aid. To celebrate the victory, from April 22 to 24 Alcoy now hosts one of the most spectacular re-enactment of the Moors and Christians festivities in Spain. There are two parades on the first day with the Christian troops marching in the morning and the Moors in the afternoon. On St George's Day, there is a religious procession, and on the final day, there is a re-enactment of the battle when the Moors take the castle which is then recaptured by the Christians. If you can't get to the Moors and Christians in Alcoy in April, you can visit the Museu Alcoià de la Festa to find out more about the traditions and to see the fabulous costumes. Spain's second most popular pilgrimage takes place in Alicante About 300,000 people take part in the Santa Faz pilgrimage every year to celebrate a miracle dating back to the 15th century. This year the pilgrimage takes place on Thursday April 28 from the Co-Cathedral of San Nicolás in Alicante city centre to the Santa Faz monastery, seven kilometres away. The pilgrims make several stops along the way to fortify themselves with local wine and homemade anise rolls to continue the journey. Once they reach Santa Faz where an important Holy Relic - the Veil of Veronica - is kept locked in a special room behind the main altar in the monastery. This is the cloth that Veronica used to wipe Jesus’s face as he carried the Cross to his Crucifixion. The only time it is taken out of its special room is for the annual pilgrimage. The special day celebrates a miracle which occurred in 1489 when the Alicante region was enduring a tough drought. A procession with the Holy Relic was held to offer prayers for rain. It is said the Holy Relic - which bears an imprint of Jesus’s face - had tears rolling from its eyes which caused the heavens to open and rain to fall in Alicante for a whole week. Now, the Santa Faz pilgrimage is held each year on the second Thursday after Easter Thursday to celebrate this 15th century miracle. In addition, the Santa Faz fair is set up with stalls selling handicrafts and traditional products including turrón from Alicante and religious souvenirs. Page 30 www.femalefocusonline.com Here at Charlesworth Gardens Design Studio, I am always trying to make any garden I design look amazing and as with anything, that means staying current with materials. I wouldn’t say that I am new to the product, but micro cement has opened up an entirely new realm of creation for me. It allows me to create floors and surfaces that can seamlessly work together to produce some staggering results. The micro cement is applied via a lengthy procedure and, as with many products and finishes, it has to be done correctly and in the right order to attain a beautiful finish that works amazingly for inside and outside, in seating areas, summer kitchens and floors within the garden space. I think the main thing I love about it is, here in Spain there is a vast array of surface finishes to use and therefore unless a house is recently completed then the chances are a lot of existing and or older properties have multiple surface finishes both inside and outside, which is a bit of a design foo-pah. It’s a well-known design fact that sometimes the simpler the palette, the more pleasant something is to look at. I always try to create this within a garden design as a concoction of materials can really not sit very well on the eyes. The simpler the palette of colours and materials used (with the exception of plant colours) the better. Micro cement works so perfectly for me also as a designer to blend new and old. My favourite projects are those that want a lovely homely and sometimes more rustic feel, but because it is a modern material it also balances perfectly if clients want to use it or incorporate it into a modern designed building. It balances between Modern and Rustic styles probably better than any other surface finish I have ever seen and used before. Charlesworth Gardens Design Studio has completed numerous micro cement work via our sister company, Artificial Grass Spain who operates to supply high quality finish surfaces for the garden spaces. And we love it. It’s such a good-looking product, allowing us to attain amazing looking spaces, both inside and out. We are constantly adding amazing pictures of our gardens to our social media feeds so keep an eye out on our websites and links to our social media feeds. ● For more information please give us a call on 696 283 704, or visit www.artificial-grass-spain.com

ometimes you come across inspiring stories and you get that warm fuzzy feeling in your belly. A feeling that many of us have been lacking lately as we are bombarded with negative news and crisis after crisis. Well, this month I would like to tell you a tale that will warm your cockles and give you the opportunity to get involved in something truly positive.
In 2019 a fella named Berend Cranz undertook a mammoth pilgrimage. He loaded his rucksack, laced up his boots, closed his front door behind him in Haarlem Holland and walked 3000 kilometres to Santiago de Compostela. Berend completed this gruelling, exhausting, beautiful and rewarding journey 127 days later. As Berend celebrates his 70th birthday he feels it is time to walk again. And what better place to set off from than the front door of his second home in Jávea. And what better motivation than to undertake the pilgrimage as a fundraiser for Cancer Care Jávea. This story caught my attention for a number of reasons. Not least because I am the official “Delegada” of a stretch of Camino Santiago called the Camino del Alba which passes from Jávea through Jesus Pobre and inland to Almansa. Considering Berend will pass my front door as he sets off on his journey I contacted him to invite him to take a rest in my garden to re-fuel on a hot coffee and maybe a slice of cake. From tiny seeds grow mighty trees and what started as a simple invitation to pitstop on my terrace has blossomed into an amazing event to which you are all invited! On the 10th of April at 10am a group of walkers and hikers will accompany Berend on the first 10 kilometres of his 1200km pilgrimage to the city of Santiago. When this jolly lot arrive in Jesus Pobre at approximately 12 noon they will be welcomed by live music, a tremendous cake sale (all proceeds to Cancer Care Jávea) and hopefully a lot of YOUR smiling faces. And it is from here that we will warmly wave Berend off as he sets off alone on this challenging undertaking.

Ana Watts, the founder of the Camino del Alba initiative, will be attending. As will representatives from Cancer Care Jávea and several other well known local faces. Live music will be performed by the uber talented Adam Daniels with a couple of guest appearances. We really hope you can join us. The “big send off” takes places at 12 noon at “El Donativo” Calle Convent 3, Jesus Pobre (by the village church).
B
Walkers joining Berend can obtain, if they so wish, their official pilgrim passport at the Jávea Tourist office in the days prior to the event. On arrival at “El Donativo” in Jesus Pobre you will receive your first official pilgrim stamp. And, with this passport in hand, you might hopefully feel inspired to one day continue to Santiago or at least complete the Camino del Alba (more information on www.caminodelalba.com). If you would like to participate in the walk at 10am please contact me +34 676 507 791. Otherwise, please just come along at noon to enjoy the cake sale (donations welcome), the live music and the atmosphere. We look forward to welcoming Berend and all of you. Be part of something special! Buen Camino and Walk Your Way Well!

When things are more organised you will feel happier and calmer and this will reflect on every part of your life. TAURUS If you are not finding satisfaction in your life, stop and take a hard look at it. Is it work, friends, family - or is it you? Finding out the root of the problem is the first step to solving it. GEMINI Recent experiences leave you wanting to help others more and more. Don’t be put off thinking that you don’t have enough to give. Be it a few hours of your time, or a small donation, every little helps. CANCER Flexibility will be the key word this month. Your ability to change plans, times and even roles will be tested to the limit, but as always you will manage it, especially with the support you have around you. LEO Being pushed into the limelight will give you an insight into just how tough it can be. It will also give you a new respect for those who have been trying to keep things running like clockwork without the total support that they deserve. VIRGO New ideas and new ventures are keeping your mind over active. You need to narrow things down and decide which ones you are going to pursue and which are unworkable right now. oroscope LIBRA Patience is thin at the moment, at a time when you seem to need it most. Clear explanations will help others see what it is you have pictured in your mind. Letting them know exactly what is required of them will avoid any misunderstandings before they occur. SCORPIO You are sick of feeling unappreciated by someone who you have tried to help more than once. Now is the time to decide wether to cut them out of your life completely or not. SAGITTARIUS Climbing the ladder of success can be a very lonely one if it is not to the benefit of everyone around you. Lifting everyone up along the way will make for a great team. Standing on them to get there will only make enemies. CAPRICORN Things are picking up pace now and you are finding that you are a little out of step and that it is hard to keep up. Don’t worry you will soon be back into the swing of it again. AQUARIUS Receiving support from someone you least expected to help leaves you questioning your initial judgement on them. If it was influenced by someone else’s opinion then maybe it is them you should be wary of. PISCES There is a lot going on this month and it is going to be a struggle to get everything moving forward smoothly. Good planning is key. Enlist the help of someone who you trust earlier rather than later, and between you it will be much easier to manage.

Pascua returns
By Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.com Easter – Pascua – is a major religious celebration in Spain and Xàbia has a full programme to mark this special event. The annual festivities commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead following his crucifixion, forming the cornerstone of the Christian faith, on which much of its religious doctrine and theology is based. Christians believe this event to be the most important in history, demonstrating a power of life over death, giving rise to the promise of eternal life. Palm Sunday is the start of Semana Santa – Holy Week – during which Christians remember the Passion of the Christ, the final few days in the life of Jesus, which began with his triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) and ended with his crucifixion and death (Good Friday). Palm Sunday (10th April 2022) takes place one week before Easter Sunday (17th April 2022). Families get dressed up to attend a special mass, preceded by a short parade; young girls carry intricate sculptures made from palm leaves, while the boys hold simpler designs. Many adults will carry a single palm frond, all to be blessed at the church. The white palm leaves are natural - the result of selected trees being covered in black bags earlier in the year to exclude all light. This process making their leaves turn white; they are carried as they are or sometimes painted in vibrant colours. The craft market is one of the oldest in the Comunidad Valenciana and fills the streets with colour and fantastic aromas from Good Friday to Easter Monday. Stalls proffer hand-crafted items including decorations, toys and souvenirs as well as tasty sweets, chocolate and fragrant spices. In the Placeta del Convent, food stalls offer hams, cheeses, olives, alongside other local specialities as well as traditional tapas. There is family entertainment throughout the weekend, including children’s shows, traditional music and dancing, workshops and theatre. In Xàbia, there is a very special procession on the eve of Good Friday. Four sacred images are carried along a short route around the historic centre, a solemn affair accompanied by slow music from the town’s band and traditional singing by an all-male choir. There are a number of Eucharist services throughout the day at the churches of San Bartolomé in the town and Loreto in the port. One of the popular events of the day is the traditional gathering of the penyas (clubs) and associations in the square around the church in the heart of the historic centre, bringing the people of Xàbia together. The celebrations are also marked by special food, ranging from special Easter cakes to festive dishes. • Mona de Pascua is popular in Valencia and Catalunya, a cake traditionally given to children which is topped with either a painted hard-boiled egg or a chocolate one. • Torrijas are thick pieces of bread soaked in a mixture of milk and egg before being fried in olive oil, served with honey and sugar. • Flores de Semana Santa are sweet, fried pastries which come in different shapes; they are also known as Flores Manchegas and are flavoured with orange flower water in the Valencia region. • Potaje de Vigilia is traditionally served on Good Friday, a casserole made with cod, chickpeas, spinach and garlic. • Sopa de Ajo is a garlic soup, with chicken broth, egg and sherry, traditionally served during Semana Santa. The 2022 Nazarene Festivities will take place between 22nd April and 3rd May; the Craft Fair, after a three year absence -due to bad weather and Covid- will be held from 15th to 18th April.

Great News for the Valleys
www.femalefocusonline.com
Jalon Valley Help and Cancer Care, both keen to improve the service to cancer patients and their families, have decided to jointly invest in a new project, Cancer Care The Valleys, to be based at the Jalon Valley Help Drop-in Centre ´Animo´ in Alcalali. Both Charities have long since recognised that there is a need to provide a more localised and accessible opportunity for those diagnosed with cancer to discuss their worries and concerns with a medically qualified practitioner. Both Charities are already working with a number of patients in the Valley and the intention is to expand and enhance the services currently provided by Cancer Care and in doing so complement those services provided by Jalon Valley Help. This new venture will be formally launched at a Charity Concert, ´Showtime´, featuring the Entertainers, to be held at the Casa Cultura in Benissa on the evening of Thursday 7 April. The weekly Cancer Drop-in Service will commence at the Ánimo on the following Thursday 14 April from 11.30am to 1.30pm. If you or any member of your family feel that you would benefit from the advice and support on offer, or just want some reassurance and the opportunity to talk, please feel free to drop in for a chat. Alternatively perhaps you may need the assistance of the ´Lynwen Specialist Nurses´. In case the Office is busy it might be preferable, although not essential, to arrange an appointment first by contacting Jayne on 722 684 093. Together Jalon Valley Help and Cancer Care are determined to ´Make A Difference´ here in the Valleys. They need your support, in whichever way you are prepared to give it, to ensure that this venture is a real success. Those of you who come along to the evening on 7 April are in for a real treat, however, with your support and encouragement, the real winners will undoubtedly be the patients and their families. Further details regarding the launch event and the services being offered will be provided on the websites of both Charities, regional newspapers, and on social media, etc. So please stay alert for these updates. When It’s Time to Move
F O Ca Baa Magae A 2022
There are more than 100 estate agents in Moraira, how do you choose the right one when it comes to selling your property? As an owner, you’ll want to know that you’ve achieved a sale, in good time, at a good price with a good estate agency. Benimo-Villas is in many ways the agency you're looking for. Firstly, you’ll be dealing with experienced professionals who not only work in the community, but live here as well. This gives them intimate knowledge of the area. You want someone who will value your property correctly. Benimo-Villa’s approach is (now for the science bit) based on a detailed analysis of many factors that all go together to give a correct market price. It is as wrong to guess a valuation as it is to ask “so what did you pay?”. In fact Benimo-Villas’ detailed price analysis will also show any issues surrounding the house (eg a missing wall on an escitura) and also suggest things to do to achieve the fastest sale. It has been proven time and time again that addressing these things early on, ends up with a smooth sale once an offer is received. Then there’s marketing - it needs to be a cut above the rest - and more. Benimo-Villas is run by Karin - a Swiss lady who speaks 4 languages fluently. She has recently be joined by Katrien who lives part of the month in her native Belgium and part of the month here. This is a huge advantage to finding buyers before they even come to Spain, and there is no doubt that Northern Europe is currently the biggest source of buyers. But above all, you need an agent who you can trust, is open, honest, reliable, transparent, professional and of course friendly and understanding. Benimo-Villas is also a member of MLS:03724 Moraira’s only official real estate network ensuring higher standards across the board. Karin and Katrien live and work by these standards and have invested heavily in the business so that when it’s time to move, it’s time to call Benimo-Villas. See advert below for contact details.
