Donating glasses to Cáritas Jávea
CÁRITAS Parroquial have signed an agreement with Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea for the optician to donate one pair of glasses per month to their charity. Cáritas will select someone each month who needs glasses but can’t afford them and send them to the store. They will then have a complete eye test to check their eyes are healthy, find out the prescription they need and then they will be able to choose a pair of frames. The lenses will then be made to their prescription and the glasses will be given to them, completely free of charge. Cáritas Parroquial are currently helping more than 120 families in Jávea by providing food each month and helping them with their individual needs. They also run workshops to help people gain the skills they need to find work, and have an allotment where people can learn the skills needed to grow their own food and feed their families with fresh, healthy produce. Many of these families need glasses, but this is a big investment, and one that many of them cannot afford. However, thanks to this new agreement, families will be able to receive the glasses they need. Store Director Cecilia Navarro explains, ‘Since I took over as Store Director in February, I’ve been looking for ways in which we can help our community and found out about all the families in Jávea that Cáritas support. They give them food and support them in lots of different ways, but they didn’t have access to free optical care. We already offer free eye tests, to ensure everyone can have their eye health checked, but know that for families that are struggling financially, a pair of glasses can be very difficult to afford. If you have poor eyesight, this further restricts your job options and can hold you back at school. This is the last thing that these families need, which is why we have committed to give one pair of glasses

to Cáritas every month and allow them to allocate those to the people who are most in need of them at that time. We hope this will make things just a little bit easier for these families and are looking forward to collaborating with Cáritas for a long time to come.’ María José Costa, representative of Cáritas Parroquial Xabia, added, ‘Thanks to the generous initiative of Specsavers Ópticas we are able to help those who need it most, from school children with impaired vision to women who need glasses to be able to sew. Thank you very much.’ Find out more about Cáritas and the incredible work they do on their website www.caritas.es Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea are also collecting money for the Red Cross Ukraine campaign and A.P.A.D. (Asociación Protectora de Animales de Denia). You can make a donation in store at Avenida Del Pla 125, Edificio Caribe, Local 6, Jávea – just off the Carretera Cabo la Nao-Pla, near Servicolor. Superior Health Insurance for you and your family I appreciate everything has changed due to Brexit, but it is now far more important to have health insurance. This is not as easy as it sounds as the choices are limited. Be very careful with your choice, for example a bank is not a good decision. You need to make sure there is an English speaker who can help you understand exactly what you are purchasing and how to use it. It is vital you follow the guidelines for using the policy, especially in regards to emergencies and hospitalisation, you could find yourself with a hefty bill to pay if you do not follow the correct procedures. If you decide to use the Spanish National Health, you will be required to provide a SIP card, EHIC or payment before treatment. The Spanish health system is very stretched and of course this means long waiting lists. ASSSA provides hospitals, clinics, specialists and doctors, many of whom speak several languages to make your health decisions easier and faster. Obviously if you are in acute pain, you do need to discover what is causing it and within the national health this can take many months to resolve and private health care offers the opportunity to speed up the process. ASSSA also provide emergency cover and their own ambulances, where you will be taken
to a hospital related to ASSSA, which you find in your ASSSA book. My company has an ASSSA administrator to help answer your questions, process your authorisation requests and liaise with ASSSA on your behalf if you should so wish. Yes, there are many cheaper options that you could consider. Do not be tempted by the price, you will not get what you need or expect. All private health insurance in Spain are limited in certain areas and be sure to understand these limitations before purchasing. Of course, ASSSA health policies are accepted for your residencia and visa applications and they provide the legal certification required. Unlike health insurance in the UK you will be presently surprised at the prices here in Spain. The difference is the Spanish government encourages the use of private health care, therefore the prices and the taxes are far lower than you may think. Between us we have recently been doing more volunteering and I would recommend it to anyone. Many of the charities are looking for volunteers in their shops or with fund raising ideas and events, all great ways to meet new people as well as helping others. It's very easy to hibernate in this weather but honestly, helping with dog walking, socialising puppies, grooming and cuddling cats and dogs is a lovely way to pass some time and the animals really do appreciate it. There are so many ways to help and unfortunately so many people and animals needing it at the moment. Let's all help make a difference.

The N-332 are a group of Spanish Traffic Police Officers who decided to create a Facebook group to inform all ex-pats and tourists about Spanish traffic laws as they think it is unfair to fine them for breaking rules they didn't know about. You can find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DrivingSpain/ and follow them to keep up to date as they only share official information.
Warning Triangles & V-16 sign Driving in Spain - Planning (orange flashing light) your trip before leaving. Until 01/01/2026 you can use both, together or separate BUT from that date it will be compulsory to use the V-16 sign, and although it is advisable to use the triangle, it will not be mandatory to use it or have one in the vehicle. Those who are planning to buy the V-16 sign should know that in 2026 this sign must include a geolocation system connected to DGT 3.0. Therefore if you have bought it without it you will need to change it. This next generation of the V-16 signs will interact with the Traffic Department. Once is activated by the driver the device will send a message reporting its location and all drivers will immediately know that there is an incident on that point. V-16 sign and motorbikes It is only advisable, but not mandatory for these vehicles. As you can see in the photo it can give your vehicle more visibility if you have a breakdown in poor visibility conditions.

Financial Advice from our family to yours
Investment Trends and Diversification The world is constantly evolving and we as human beings are continuing to change with it. Financial markets are no exception and along with legislation, investment trends also change over time. An investment trend is a shift of emphasis from investors to a particular stock, sector or market which they expect to grow substantially in the future. The majority of clients will, however, have little knowledge about underlying funds and so this highlights one of the major benefits of engaging with a financial adviser. Whilst some trends can be short-lived events, such as a switch to commodities when markets are volatile, others have a more indefinite timescale. If you can time an investment right into this type of trend, you could achieve some excellent returns over time. A good example of this was in 2020 when we saw Covid-19 starting to cause a real problem worldwide. We sat down here at Logic to discuss our thoughts on how Covid would most likely affect markets. We identified not only potential issues at the time, but also investment opportunities for clients moving forward. One of the conclusions we drew was how important technology would be during the period of remote working and restricted mobility. We recommended that our clients increased their exposure within the technology sector and those that did, benefitted significantly. Another increasingly popular way of managing money is by engaging with a Discretionary Fund Manager (third-party investment specialist) whose sole responsibility is to manage money in accordance with your attitude to risk. This is another “trend” we are seeing within the industry, but one which we can only see getting bigger, as more and more IFA's see the benefits of engaging with investment specialists during these volatile times. Above all, diversification and regular servicing of your investments remain key. It is of no use having money invested in assets which were exceptional 10 years ago but are no longer keeping pace with the changes in life and investment trends. The importance of reviewing portfolios on a regular basis should never be underestimated and we believe that as part of the ongoing servicing of your investments, your financial adviser should be in regular contact with you keeping you informed. Holding a diversified portfolio of proven funds will go a long way to protecting your investment in the event of a downturn in markets, at the same time as providing you with a solid portfolio capable of delivering positive and consistent returns over the medium-to-long term. If you would like to talk to us about your existing portfolio, or you are looking at creating a new investment, please do not hesitate to contact us.

OUR SUN HAS SOME FLARE
www.femalefocusonline.com
JUST WHAT IS GOING ON UP THERE?
T
here have been quite a few stories in the press over the last few weeks about things happening with our favourite star, the Sun. Many of these stories use sensationalist language like “satellites knocked back to Earth” and “giant solar storm will roast us all” so I thought I had better explain just what is going on. The first thing to understand is that the Sun is not a steady unchanging star, like everything in nature, it's changing all the time, we call it a variable star. Fortunately for us it only varies by about 0.1 %, if it was much more Earth would be a very unpleasant place for humans. A major part of this constant change is what's called the solar cycle, a period of time over which the Sun goes through a rise and fall in how much activity is going on up there. Actually, there are several different cycles some of which overlap, these include a rise and fall in the number of sunspots, a complete reversal of the Sun’s magnetic field and a rise in the number of solar flares. All these things are linked but an explanation involves quite a bit of nuclear physics, and this isn't the place for all that. What is concerning the newspapers most is the number of solar flares and CMEs or coronal mass ejections. Despite what newspapers say, these are not the same thing at all, although they are linked. A solar flare isn't a real concern to us, but a CME is a different matter, so just what is it? Simply put it's a vast cloud of solar plasma, highly magnetic and full of protons and electrons that will take up to 18 hours to get from the Sun to Earth. It's these particles that can and do cause havoc for us. The most intensive recorded solar storm was called the Carrington event in 1859, at the dawn of our electrical age. It almost destroyed many telegraph systems, even setting fire to some telegraph stations. Society has moved on since then and almost everything now is vulnerable to these events. Naturally engineers are well aware of the dangers, and will do what they can to design protection, but that makes things more expensive, so many things like electrical transformers have to take their chances. That's the bad news, the good news is that we would have to be unlucky to be hit by a dangerous CME. The Sun is a vast globe, we are a tiny planet so the chances of a big CME firing off at just the right time, in just the right direction to hit us are small. But sooner or later............ This month’s picture was taken a short time ago by Ron Giddy, one of our members. Vega Baja Astronomy Group. That cloud leaving the Sun, is much bigger than the Earth.

More police on patrol through the summer
Visitors and residents in the tourist capital of Benidorm have been enjoying the sight of police on horseback during the summer. The National Police is deploying 225 new agents for the province as part of its Safe Summer Plan. Many of these officers will be working in Benidorm to increase security. Benidorm also has the Foreign Tourist Assistance Service (SATE), which offers assistance in the native language of tourists. As well as their role in combating crime on the beaches, the officers will also be used in large events, such as concerts. Many will be working out of police stations of Alicante and Benidorm, but also in other areas such as Elche, Elda, Orihuela and Alcoy, which also have a large number of holidaymakers throughout July and August. Benidorm mayor Antonio Pérez said Benidorm is a place that takes care of people, but moreover which likes to take care of those who take care of people. He pointed out that many visitors choose Benidorm because it is a safe destination as well as having a fabulous climate. Benidorm's population soars fourfold in summer and this means more resources need to be deployed, such as the police. Summertime - windmills of your mind
By Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.com Driving around the Xàbia /Denia area you will probably have noticed the watchtower structures that dominate the scenery. These are actually abandoned windmills known as Los Molinos. Windmills have been a feature of Spanish landscapes for years, including the ones in Consuegra, which inspired Miguel de Cervantes to create the famous episode of the battle against the giants in his work 'Don Quixote'. Our local Xàbia mills were built because the llebeig (southwest) wind blows almost constantly here. As you fly into Valencia, you will notice the proliferation of modern wind turbines also strategically situated to take advantage of our unique weather conditions. The local mills have different levels of preservation, with some in better condition than others. Collectively, they are considered to be the largest set of flour mills in the Valencian Community, unique in the territory. La Plana or Les Planes is the plateau where the Montgó descends towards the sea, until it ends on the cliffs of Cap San Antonio, the area designated a local natural park. Xàbia's economy in the 14th century was largely based on agriculture, especially rain fed crops such as wheat, almond trees, vines, olives and carob trees. Wheat was the driver for the development of these mills, which are large cylindrical structures about seven metres high and six metres in diameter. The mills mainly consist of two floors: the ground floor was used as a warehouse, while the upper floor was where the wheat was ground. Some buildings also had an intermediate room, which was usually designated as the miller's room. The upper level was supported by a rough vault that housed the hollow wooden mechanisms that moved the stone millstones and supported the blades. All this disappeared when they ceased to function due to industrialisation, the increased importance of the raisin trade to the local economy and the abandonment of wheat cultivation in the region. Ferran Zurriaga i Agustí in his work "La Plana. Terra del llebeig", (La Plana, Land of the Wind) describes them as "the guardians of La Plana". The author explains that it is not known exactly when they began to be built, but points out that, from existing documents in the Denia municipal archives, the origin of the mills were linked to the settlement of the Jeronimos brothers in La Plana (the inhabitants of Calas Santes, who later founded the Monastery of La Plana). The last testimony of the functioning of the mills dates back to 1911, thanks to a local dignatory Vicent Ribes’ testimony. Some, though not all, of the mills are public, some are privately owned, others have been restored and are inhabited. One of them even has a garden on two levels. Public or private, all are classified as Buildings of Local Relevance (BRL); they are protected, controlled and subject to regulations. They are currently in the process of being declared BIC (Assets of Cultural Interest) by Unesco heritage. Signs and symbols can still be seen on some of the stones of the mills, which "had the symbolic value of sanctifying the house and ridding it of witchcraft", according to Zurriaga, a celebrated historian and author. In the mills, especially in the one that seems to be the oldest, there are a series of signs that serve to put the stones in order. If you want to make an easy excursion, there is a signposted route between the recreational area of Cap de Sant Antoni and the mills. It is short and very easy to negotiate. This is one of the best places to contemplate the Pla de Xàbia, the plain on which the municipality is located. From the river Gorgos to the west and the sea to the east, and also by Cap de San Antoni to the north and Cap Prim o Cap de Sant Marti to the south; early evening before sunset is the best time to go. From Los Molinos, you can see the Puig de la Llorença and the ridges of the Sierra de Bèrnia, Migdia and Peñón de Ifach. For the more intrepid, there is a much more demanding route, which goes from the port of Xàbia to the top of Montgó, passing the mills of La Plana. For more details go to the Wikiloc Trail. It is also worth contacting the local tourist information bureaus as they organise occasional guided excursions.

Perms are the latest trend! Perms are fashionably coming back, as was noted in 2021
The spiral perm was the big hit in the 80s with Dolly Parton, Cher and Sarah Jessica Parker. This was achieved on several kinds of perming roller, such as the spiral rod, normal conventional perming rod or the classic; Moulten Brown, as well as others. Hair would be taken into small sections and wrapped length ways either onto 2 perming rods which was called Spiral root extension perm or along a lengthy rod such as the Moulten brown. This gave the spiral wind a more even result in the shape of the curl. Often these rods were of different sizes to produce more volume, Perm solutions would then be applied to give a longer lasting effect. Julia Roberts style in Pretty woman carried the craze for perms in the 90s although her hair is naturally curly, the help of a perm did help emphasise those luscious locks. So, now to our modern day perms; The Olaplex Perm - what's so great about Olaplex? It protects and rebuilds the bonds in the hair structure which gives a more even look stabilising the broken bonds as well as repairing and protecting. Adding a Olaplex treatment to any permanent solution will help the perm become gentler to the hair. It allows people with hi-lights and bleach to have a perm. The added bonus is it is not like most traditional perms where there is a 48 hour wait before shampooing. This isn’t necessary if Olaplex has been used, you can shampoo straight away. The French braid perm seems to be the latest trend. I’m sure if you’ve plaited your own hair wet or dry before bed, waking up gives your hair that natural tousled look once dried and un-plaited. The result of the french braid perm is on a similar level, only making it more permanent. Instead of wrapping the hair around a perm rod, the hair is french plaited or Dutch plaited into one or several plaits. Perm solution is applied and neutralised creating that zig zag effect on the hair. How kissable are you?
Looking after your teeth contributes to the way you look. Sparkling clean, even teeth look good, so you can smile with confidence. Good mouthcare keeps your breath fresh too! It’s over to you Nobody wants to lose a tooth from decay or have bleeding gums. Good habits keep tooth decay and gum disease at bay. This way you will ensure that you look and feel good now, and you will keep your teeth for life. The root of the problem Plaque is a sticky substance that develops on the teeth continuously and contains a host of bacteria. These bacteria are the common link between tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. The plaque bacteria use the sugars from our food and drink to cause acid attacks on the teeth. If this occurs often, then over time, tooth decay or cavities will form. Gum disease is caused when the bacteria infect the gums, causing them to bleed. In the early stages, it is easy to get rid of (by thorough toothbrushing to clean them off), but if allowed to develop, the bacteria creep down and create pockets between the tooth and the gum, where they grow and multiply and you can no longer brush them away…eventually making the tooth loose. The smell of gas produced by the activity of the bacteria living in the mouth is the main cause of bad breath! The daily removal of plaque around and in between the teeth helps fight against all these problems. To keep plaque at bay you need • Fluoride toothpaste – fluoride helps to strengthen the tooth against acid attacks. Most toothpaste contains fluoride which helps

prevent decay. • A good toothbrush – check the bristles are not too worn and the head is small enough to move easily inside your mouth. • Your time! – make time to clean all the surfaces of your teeth thoroughly and get right up to overlap the gums. Do this in the morning, and last thing at night every day. Clean in between the teeth in the mornings as well. Snack attacks All types of sugars (packet sugar, fruit sugars and honey) and even some processed starchy foods, including crisps and savoury snacks, can feed the mouth bacteria producing acid. Every time we eat sugar an acid attack can occur. The acids in some foods and soft drinks can also attack the tooth enamel directly. To protect your teeth, reduce the number of snacks you take between meals. Try to have breakfast and sit down to regular meals if you can. This will help reduce snacking or sugar cravings. If you do snack, try not to nibble them over a long period of time; grazing all day provides a constant acid attack on the teeth. Swishing or holding drinks in your mouth is more damage. Use a straw to take the drink past your front teeth. Smoking Smokers have more gum disease, stained teeth and bad breath. It is very hard to kick the habit, and in the long-term smoking can cause cancer. So, say no to cigarettes now. Your dentist is there to help A visit to the dentist is a chance to talk to an expert who can give you advice about keeping your mouth healthy. If you have a particular concern about the appearance of your teeth your dentist may be able to provide advice or treatment to improve them. Follow this advice and kiss with confidence! Three Amata craft fairs in August
www.femalefocusonline.com
This month craft association Amata organizes two weekend markets in the province of Alicante, while their summer fair in the port of Jávea is in full swing until 4 September. In all three fairs only work made by the stall holder is sold and each stall offers something different. The first weekend fair is in San Fulgencio, in the La Marina urbanization, where thousands of people live or spend their summer holidays. That's in the evenings of 5, 6 and 7 August and it promises to be a lively market, with live Jazz and lots of swing, and all participants dress up in 1920s style. The fair is aimed at public of all ages, with lots of activities for kids, workshops and craft demonstrations. Two weeks later they are holding an arts and crafts fair in Hondón de las Nieves; this will be for the seventh time. Two jugglers will entertain the public, there are workshops for children and on Saturday at midnight there is the famous correfocs, a parade with lots of fireworks and noise, that attracts people from all over the area. We briefly summarize the three fairs, each one with a link to the programme. * San Fulgencio – in Calle Francisco de Quevedo of La Marina Urbanization – August 5, 6 and 7 in the evenings from 6pm to midnight - https://www.puebloartesano.es/sanfulgencio.html * Hondón de las Nieves – in the old town – Friday, 19 August, 7pm - 12pm.; Saturday, 20 August, 11am - 2pm and 7pm - 12pm and Sunday, 21 August, 11am - 2pm https://www.puebloartesano.es/hondon.html. * Jávea – on the Paseo Marítimo in the port – every evening in August from 7pm to midnight – https://www.puebloartesano.es/javeaverano.html.
Cool things to eat this summer
We know we’re supposed to drink at least two litres of water a day, according to the European Food Safety Authority. Keeping hydrated is particularly important in the hot summer months. We’ve found some other fluids to help you stay hydrated and keep cool. Healthy watermelon recipes Watermelon is 90% water and very healthy as it also contains vitamin, C, vitamin A and magnesium. As well as being delicious eaten on its own, especially when it's cold, you can turn it into a home-made slushie by blending watermelon with water and freezing it to make a granita. Add watermelon to salads - it works particularly well with goat's cheese or avocado. Otherwise freeze slices of watermelon for instant ice pops or to add as flavoured ice cubes to water or other soft drinks. Making cucumber water Cucumber is around 96% water, making it the best food to eat to keep hydrated. Add cucumber to any salad or sandwich. Many spas and beauty salons know the virtue of cucumber water and it’s very easy to make yourself at home. All you need to do is slice half a cucumber into thin rounds. Put in a large jar. Add eight cups of cold water and put in the fridge for at least an hour. You can add some fresh herbs such as basil or mint while it's infusing for added flavour or serve it with slices of lemon, orange or lime.
Healthy gazpacho soup Gazpacho is a famous cold Spanish soup packed with flavour and healthy ingredients. You can buy it in any supermarket or make your own. Chop tomatoes, green peppers, cucumber onions and garlic and blend them. Once blended, add salt and pepper to taste, and then slowly add olive oil while the blender is running. Refrigerate for a few hours. You can serve it with croutons and chopped tomatoes, cucumber, peppers and onion if you wish. Easy salmorejo recipe Salmorejo is easier to make and, personally, I find it much tastier than gazpacho. You can also buy this in the supermarket but it’s quick and easy to make. You need fresh, ripe tomatoes. Peel the skin by cutting an X in the bottom of the tomatoes, plunge in boiling water for 30 seconds and then put in a bowl of iced water. It's then easy to peel off the skin. Blend the tomatoes, add stale bread crumbs, mix and leave for a few minutes. Add salt, garlic and a splash of sherry vinegar. Then slowly add olive oil to emulsify. To be honest, I sometimes just stir in the oil afterwards instead of slowly emulsyfing it in the blender. Refrigerate until it's very cold. You can add chopped hard-boiled egg and ham to serve.

Visit Altea's fabulous firework display at sea
One of Europe’s most magnificent fireworks show of light, colour, gunpowder and music takes place in Altea on Saturday August 13. The Castell de l’Olla is one of the finest pyrotechnical spectacles you will ever see. Each year, on the Saturday closest to San Lorenzo which is held on August 10, Altea hosts a breathtakingly-beautiful firework display from a special platform floating in the Mediterranean off l’Olla beach. About 50,000 people - more than double the population of Altea - take to the beaches or sail their boats out to sea - to enjoy the Castell de l’Olla firework display which is being held on Saturday August 13 this year just before midnight. Music is choreographed to the night-time show lighting up the dark skies and whose sparkle is reflected in the waters. The event began around 30 years as a tribute local pyrotechnic Blas Aznar - Uncle Blai, the rocket - who passed away some years ago. A castle of fireworks was launched specially in his honour and each year it gets bigger and more beautiful. This year, pyrotechnician Ricardo Caballer is in charge of the glorious display and is promising a new design "explosive with novelties" and to “continue being an international benchmark in the world of gunpowder". You can get the Benidorm-Dénia Tram Line 9 to Olla de Altea station, which takes around 25 minutes from Benidorm. There is still a substitute bus from Dénia to Gata de Gorgos, where you can pick up the tram to Olla de Altea. Article by Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.com

Accessible doesn’t need to be ugly…It can be stunning A different reason for a bathroom reform.
"I contacted Showerman as I’d heard great things about them, and I was after a reform with a difference. My parents live close to me but are both dealing with different health issues as they get older. I have on several occasions needed to help them with their bathroom routines, but caring from them in their existing bathroom was uncomfortable and hazardous. The old configuration was very awkward and a slip in the shower cubicle could have been disastrous. So in order to be able to keep Mum and Dad living in their own home for as long as possible, we called Alexandra and explained our predicament. Alexandra had lots of ideas and suggestions and designed us an accessible bathroom with all the safety features we needed but it was also beautiful, in fact you wouldn’t think it was a disability bathroom, it is gorgeous. We moved the toilet to another position to create a wider access, we took out the bath and old shower cubicle and installed a wide walk-in shower with no step, there is now plenty of space for Dad’s walker. They have grab rails, a non-slip floor, accessible storage, a huge shower with space for two and a seat for assisted showering. It is a perfectly normal looking bathroom which anyone would be delighted to use. Mum and Dad are thrilled, it has given Dad a new lease of life as he can wash by himself again and Mum is delighted that he is showering more often, and she is no longer afraid of falling over in there while she is using it. I, as their main carer, had to put it to use for the first time last week as Dad had a fall and I needed to clean him up, it was so much easier and much more dignified. I’m so grateful we did this for them and very grateful to Alexandra and the whole team at Showerman for the great design, the great work, the professionalism, the clean work and the respect for my parents and their property. I recommend them 1000%." So don’t just think you need to change a bathroom for aesthetic reasons, you can also make changes for lifestyle reasons and either give yourself or someone you love the freedom to carry on taking care of themselves for that little while longer. Showerman - C/Historiador Escolano 14, Jávea (Thiviers). Open Monday to Thursday 10am to 1pm. Tel: 965 792 285, Tel/WhatsApp 639 292 081 or visit www.showermanspain.com.

How to travel free on trains until December
L
et the train take the strain was a slogan in 1980s Britain to encourage more people to use the railways. Now Spain has provided an even greater incentive to hop on board the trains - free travel from September 1 until December 31.
President of the Government in Spain, Pedro Sánchez, announced that 100% of all tickets, except for longdistance or single journeys, operated by Renfe will be free including monthly subscriptions and bono tickets for a minimum of 10 return trips. Sánchez explained that 100% of all non-individual tickets will be discounted, which could mean around 75 million trips of less than 300 kilometres are now free. The objective is to encourage more people to use public transport to save energy in the face of high fuel prices. If you regularly travel in or around Alicante or Valencia, it has always paid to buy a multi-journey ticket to get discounts of around 50% of the full price of a single journey. Now you can travel for free. Even if you don’t travel by train for work, you could plan several sightseeing trips to Alicante, Orihuela, Alcoy, Elche, Valencia, Gandia or Xativa, for example, to take advantage of the government scheme. Just check which multi-journey travel card is best for you in terms of type of travel and the length of time it is valid before you buy. In Alicante province, passengers on three Cercanías lines will be able to benefit from this measure. The Alicante-Murcia which stops in Orihuela, Callosa de Segura, San Isidro-Albatera-Catral, Crevillent, Elx Carrús, Elx Parc, Torrellano and San Gabriel; Alcoy-Xàtiva; and Alicante-San Vicente lines will be free for anyone who purchases a subscription during the last four months of the year. Walk Your Way Well
with Niamh O'Sheehan
With these tortuously high temperatures I am going to take a few moments to advise you all to take it easy. What? Has Niamh lost her tiny mind? For years she has been nagging us to boot up and get out into nature to fix our world through walking and now this? Scandalous! I know, I know! Don’t get me wrong. I’m not telling you to stop altogether. I’m just asking you to TWEAK your exercise habits in August to survive silly temperatures. So, GET UP EARLY and get your exercise done at dawn. If you miss this slot then just stay put. Don’t go out walking again until sunset. It’s that simple! In July, the local emergency services in both the UK and Spain had to deal with a startling number of call-outs for people suffering heat stroke. Believe me, heat-stroke is no laughing matter. Heat-stroke is the most serious heat-related illness. It occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature: the body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. It can be fatal! An overwhelming consensus among the worldwide scientific community agrees that our planet is undergoing significant, highly problematic climate shifts. Experts point to recordbreaking temperatures across the globe as the most worrying manifestation of climate change. This debate has once again been forefront in the news as temperatures across Europe hit frighteningly high numbers. How can we help? Well, that is the million-dollar question! The best thing we can do is start at home and do what we can as individuals and families. You've got the power! Here is a short list of suggestions to help us save thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide every year: Replace regular light bulbs with LED bulbs. Holiday locally instead of flying abroad to avoid using aeroplanes. Eat less meat and consume fewer dairy products. Walk or cycle instead of driving! Recycle and upcycle your waste. Check your tyres are inflated properly to improve your mileage. Invest your money ethically. Use less hot water by taking shorter and cooler showers and washing your clothes in cold water. Avoid products with a lot of packaging to help reduce your waste. Adjust your thermostat down just 2 degrees in winter and up 2 degrees in summer. Plant a tree to absorb one tonne of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. Turn off electronic devices when you're not using them. Share your experiences and changes with family and friends to help spread the word. NOW, BACK TO THE BUSINESS OF WALKING FOR WELLNESS! My 28 Day Movement Challenge is having incredible results for participants and the next start date of September 1st is ALMOST full. Drop me a quick WhatsApp if you would like more information. It's fun and it's fulfilling! There is nothing that gives me more pleasure than help see you Walk Your Way Well. +34 676 507 791.

water in your pool? Pressure Testing by Pool Technical Services May Well Be The Solution.
In this heat, swimming pools are a wonderful way to keep cool, have some family fun, keep fit or just relax. But things do go wrong and your first indication that there might be a problem is excessive water usage. You find yourself topping up the pool regularly… whilst adding to your water bills. If you’re in this position, there’s a leak somewhere and there are really only 2 sources; the pool itself or the pipe work. Sadly, repairing leaking pools isn’t the cheapest of things, so diagnosis is imperative. If it’s the pool, a crack may be obvious in which case you need to call Darren at PTS Pools. However, if it’s not obvious, the best course of action is to pressure test all the pipe work. Again, you need to call Darren at Pool Technical Services (PTS-Pools). PTS Pools have recently re-invested in a whole range of specialist equipment upgrading their ability to detect leaks accurately and quickly. Pressure testing involves plugging each end of the various pipe runs, adding valves and gauges, introducing air pressure in a controlled manner and then observing any pressure drops. If no pressure drop, then on to the next pipe run. If there is a pressure drop, then it’s onto repairs. Using more specialised equipment such as hydrophonic listening devices, and remote camera inspection with location sensors, PTS Pools can pinpoint any leaks in the pipe. This is important in order to localise and minimise all repair work. The last thing you want is someone guessing and digging up the whole terrace and over-charging you. If in the end, the pipe work checks out, then PTS-Pools will locate unseen cracks and leaks again using sophisticated thermal imaging equipment and will then embark upon repairs. In fact PTS-Pools have the capability and qualifications to diagnose and repair underwater without draining the pool. Pool Technical Services (PTS-Pools) have been creating happy customers whilst saving them money and putting their minds at rest for nearly a decade. If you have a leaking pool then call Darren on 679 637 623 and arrange an initial survey.

Donation for MABS
MABS president Jacqueline Phillips MBE was presented with a cheque for 3,000€ collected from two recent fundraising events. MABS is a cancer support foundation, set up in 1999 and available to anyone who needs help or support as a result of cancer and is funded through donations to its charity shops and events such as these. The first was the postponed Montgo walk, organised by Peter Fulham, owner of The Codfather of Moraira. This annual event has been taking place for the last 5 years, traditionally in October, but delayed last year due to Covid and rescheduled to May. In total seven people took part in the 3-hour trek, collecting 1,700€ between The Codfather, Devine Beauty, Castle Bar and Premium Bar. This year’s walk is planned for Saturday, 29 October and sponsorship forms will be available in September. The second event was ´The Big Platinum Jubilee party´, held on Saturday, 4 June with all businesses located in the European Centre contributing to raise a fantastic 1,300€. In addition to the previous mentioned it also included the English butcher, Alba Consultas, Tina Mrs Pickles and My Way Bar. Sarah Thomas donated a fabulous balloon arch and Rebecca Myers did a splendid job decorating the entire terrace of the European Centre. A raffle was held, with many generous businesses around Moraira donating prizes, vouchers, meals, cash, services and even a 32” smart TV from Telitec! It was a real family event with fun, laughter and music at heart of it, demonstrating community spirit at its best and raising money for an incredible local charity.
SPIRITUAL FRIENDS COSTA BLANCA
A notice to supporters, regular attendees and anyone new interested in this, there will be no meetings in August. We start fortnightly meetings again on Wednesday 7 September when clairvoyant David Darnborough will be our speaker. The SF group began back in 2006 - over the years there have been name changes and different venues for meetings. For several years our meeting place has been Jávea Golf Club where we are still welcoming and inviting anyone to come along to meetings when interested in the subject of the day - (there is no commitment to attend all meetings). For more info about the group see the website www.spiritualfriendscostablanca.com or email sp.fr.cb@gmail.com.
Passport validity for UK visitors to Spain
If you have friends and family from the UK coming to visit you in Spain, do make sure that they are aware of the rules on passport validity. Visitors from the UK must meet the Schengen area rules (https://ec.europa.eu/.../ schengen.../schengen-area_en.) Passports must meet 2 requirements. They must be: • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’) • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’) People should check both the issue date and the expiry date in their passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. These extra months do not count towards the validity needed and could affect whether your passport meets the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old. You can find more information on all the entry requirements for Spain at https://www.gov.uk/foreign.../spain/entry-requirements If you are a UK National living in Spain and covered by the Withdrawal Agreement, you do not need any extra months on your passport to enter or exit EU countries.
Local Freemason's Lodge Hiram Abif, help to feed the needy
After being asked by the new Provincial Grand Master of Valencia to support four principal charities this year, local Lodge Hiram Abif wasted no time in responding to the request. In conjunction with the Provincial Grand Lodge of Valencia, a donation of two thousand Euros was made to the soup kitchen of Saint Gabriel. The WM was received by the President of the Association Sr Antonio Moya and a member of the management team Sr Antonio Nieto. The photo shows the sincere gratitude of this institution that carries out enormous work for the benefit of many people who are in real need in our province. In Hiram Abif Lodge they are already planning to continue helping this soup kitchen in the future as it already has an enormous amount of work to do and which, unfortunately, we believe will increase significantly in the coming months. Hiram Abif Lodge No 80 would also like to express their deepest gratitude for the important contribution made by our Worshipful Provincial Grand Master and the Provincial Grand Lodge of Valencia to which they are deeply proud to belong. If you are interested in becoming a Freemason, please contact me on prensa@glpvalencia.com. WBro William G Turney ProvGCO, Communications Officer, Provincial Grand Lodge of Valencia.
