Protecting your eyes from the spring sunshine As the weather hots up, it’s not just our skin feeling the heat. Our eyes too are affected by UV rays from the sun. That is why you need to take particular care on the beach, as sand reflects 15% of the UV radiation and sea foam 25%. This is not blocked by a hat, so it’s important to consider your options for protecting your eyes. Mike Stone, Director of Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea and Calpe explains your options. 1. Standard or prescription polarising lenses – Polarising lenses are a good option to eliminate glare, especially to stop the reflections when you’re at the beach. Once you’ve seen the difference, you won’t want to wear ordinary glasses again. These glasses are also great for driving. 2. Reactions lenses – These are lenses which react to light, darkening when you are outside to become like sunglasses. These are good options if you would rather not change glasses but want to have UV protection and see clearly in all light conditions. 3. UV coating on your prescription glasses – Many of our customers don’t like to change between their normal bifocal or varifocal lenses and sunglasses, so leave their eyes unprotected. However, we can add UV coating to your normal lenses, providing UV protection, without a tint, for only €15. 4. UV coating plus sun tint – You can transform your glasses by adding a brown, grey or green sun tint as well as a UV coating to both protect eyes, relieve eye strain and soften bright lights. It is so important that you don’t get caught out by the spring sunshine. Living in Spain, you need to protect your eyes all through the year to avoid damage to your eyes and your vision. Specsavers Ópticas has just launched a new range of 28 new designer sunglasses and 52 own brand styles, including five great new kids’ styles for spring/summer 2019. They can also advise you on the best sun protection options to suit your preference and lifestyle. Visit them in Avenida Ejércitos Españoles No. 6 in Calpe or Avenida Del Pla 125 in Jávea, or visit www.specsavers.es.

²²²²²²²²²²²²²²²²²²² Chit Chat - Host Families Needed Chit Chat Summer Camp for children in Jávea is one of the most successful language summer schools in Spain. Because of an excess number of children wishing to stay this summer, we are right now recruiting native English speaking Host Families. If you live in Jávea, Benitachell, Gata, Moraira, Jesus Pobre or Pedreguer and you would like to earn some extra money over the summer months (July & August) and are able to offer a caring and comfortable home to Spanish children for 2 weeks at a time, please call Helena on 650 426 677. The age groups of the children range from 8 to 15. The children are at home with you overnight, and go off to the Chit Chat school by bus for the day, then return (again by bus) about 5pm-ish and are with you for the evening. This period of time, and having the family evening meal together is when the host family comes into its own, and the time can be used to really get to know the students and encourage them to use their English and to participate in British family life. On the Saturday in the middle of their stay the children go on an organised trip. There is absolutely no need for the Host Family to speak Spanish themselves, indeed the very idea is to speak English with the children the whole time, so that for the length of their stay they are exposed to the English language. With almost 40 years of experience of organising Summer Camps, Chit Chat gives full support to the Host Families. If you are interested, call Helena, the local Supervisor for Chit Chat on 650 426 677.

Property ownership transfer: Did you pay more tax than you should have? To make this article as simple as possible we’ve created a fictional case. Let’s imagine you buy resale property in sunny Spain, somewhere in Alicante province. Your property costs €80,000, which would have 10% transfer tax in the Region of Valencia. You pay the relevant amount of tax: €8,000. Everything clear, everything legal.

However…

A short period of time after, you receive a letter from the tax office claiming €2,000 in extra tax on the purchase of your property. Why? Because the tax office uses a formula that’s not according to the actual market price of the property. On their records, your property is calculated at €100,000. The relevant tax on that amount would be 10%, hence the €2,000 difference they are claiming (€10,000 tax according to their records minus €8,000 paid at purchase).

The good news

The court sentence 2186/2018 from the Spanish Supreme Court determined the way the tax office calculated the real value of the property is inappropriate. The formula used by this entity does not correspond with the actual value of the property, as such formula is based on parameters from the time before the financial crisis, where properties were more expensive.

The solution

There are two possible scenarios: 1. You already received the initiation of their own calculation of the value 2. You have just received the second letter from the tax office with the invoice In scenario number 1, do not appeal yet and wait for the letter with the invoice, as it is only a provisional liquidation of the revaluation. In scenario number 2, you have 30 days to appeal against the definitive revaluation to a higher authority. Are you within any of the previous scenarios? Please give us a ring at 96 647 1898 or send us an email at admin@sun-lawyers.com. We’ll be happy to hear from you!

Take care when choosing your Health Insurance provider in Spain When living in Spain, unless you are entitled to public healthcare you will need health insurance to obtain Residencia and obviously, to give you access to medical care; which of course is vital. There is no way round it and you would be very foolish living in a country without access to Doctors, Consultants and hospitals. Then you have the problem of which health insurance company to select? I can only advise you to be very careful when choosing and don’t just go with the cheapest policy. It will give you very little or no cover! I have been working closely with ASSSA in excess of 20 years and I myself am a client. ASSSA are very experienced and very clear with what they offer and over the years they have invested heavily in expanding their medical network within Spain and are continuing to do so. The majority of the medical services provide English speaking staff which I can assure you helps with the stress when requiring medical attention. One of the most important aspects of a health insurance policy is “Guaranteed for Life”. This means you will not be given notice to terminate your contract if you have an expensive claims year. This is vitally important as otherwise you will be without medical care when you need it most. In addition, when seeking alternative cover you will have accumulated an extensive list of pre-existing illnesses and may not be accepted. With ASSSA “the age you join is the age you stay”, this means that your premium will not increase merely because you have gone into another age bracket. Unless these 2 clauses are written in the documentation from other providers, then despite verbal assurances you may find that the terms are not available. As an added bonus, my Head Office in Jávea has a dedicated ASSSA department which will guide you through the process and assist with the administration of your policy. For more information contact one of my specialists on 96 579 5372, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.

“Should I or shouldn't I?” We have had months of uncertainty regarding Brexit and what we should do to prepare and get our paperwork in order. Now we are told that as Residents of Spain there may be more of an urgency with a new Law granted in March to change our UK driving Licence to Spanish within 9 months if there is a No Deal or our exit is delayed. We spoke to Lisa Turner, the Director of PMR Property Management & Rentals in Alfaz del Pi, and her advice was quite clear. “Your Licence should be changed within 2 years of becoming a Spanish Resident, but now we may ALL only have until December 2019 to do this” she said, “If you have a UK Licence and are Resident in Spain, change it now to keep on the right side of the Law and any new rules that may be passed over the next weeks and months as things hopefully become more clear”. This seems good advice. If you would like help with making the change, give PMR a call on 96 626 0877 or visit them at the Homes, Gardens and Lifestyle Show - see centre pages for more information. Builders – the good, the bad or just M3BT? No matter where you live in the U.K, France, Germany or here in Spain there are always those builders who give our trade a really bad name. Frequently M3BT is approached to help remedy a problem that a client is facing not knowing where to turn next when it comes to a construction problem. The key problem people face in Spain when building a new house or reforming a resale is that they do not speak the local language, do not understand the local town hall legislation and have not taken independent advice. One of our current clients contracted a builder and whilst the client was working in the Middle East was led to believe that work was progressing… The contractor made more frequent requests for payment outside the agreed payment schedule, so the client requested an independent survey on the work carried out. It transpired that the project was behind schedule and the costs were exaggerated and now the contract is terminated. M3BT are in the process of finishing our client’s home …fully insured, transparent contract, certified payment schedule and weekly progress reports have given our clients renewed confidence. This is just one of many sad tales we hear from our clients. This particular client contacted us through an independent forum and was recommended to us by one of our repeat clients. M3BT cover the whole of the northern Costa Blanca providing all building services from new builds, entire reforms or kitchen and bathroom refits. As well as new pools and terraces and pool repair work. M3BT are the preferred installer for Covrex pool covers in the Costa Blanca. If you are considering a new build or a reform then why not contact us to discuss your project and you can also chat to one of our satisfied clients. Just give M3BT a call on 618 084 156 or visit www.m3bt.com.

Bunions or HAV?

The Bunion or Hallux Valgus is a deformity of the foot caused by a deviation of the first toe towards the middle axis of the foot and a deviation of the first metatarsal towards the outer edge of the foot accompanied by irregular bone growth in the first metatarsal head and articular incongruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This causes pain due to inflammation of the soft tissues of the area from constant friction against footwear and from the structural and mechanical alteration due to the bone deviation. When is it recommended to operate on bunions? It is recommended to operate on bunions when they are painful, when osteoarthritis appears or the structural deformity affects walking correctly which in turn affects other levels of the locomotor system. It is also advisable to perform surgery in cases in which as a result of the bunion, the toes are deforming like when the second toe appears hammer-like. When a patient wishes to undergo an operation a professional should study each case individually, taking into account the age, health status, lifestyle ... etc. At Portalet Clinic, we will explain in detail and alleviate any worries without compromise. What type of technique is carried out at Clinica Podológica Portalet? We perform minimum incision surgery. As its name suggests, it is done using minimal skin incisions, usually 2 to 4mm. Through (or other feet problems) these millimetric incisions we can reach the soft tissues and bone, without causing injury to the adjacent tissues. Advantages of Minimal Incision Surgery: - Immediate recovery as the procedure is minimal. - The patient walks away with a post-surgical shoe without crutches or help. - After just 48 hours the patient can continue life as normal. - Almost painless. Before After Before After - No fixing bolts or needles used. One of the drawbacks of open surgery is the use of fixing materials, with Minimal Incision Surgery fixations are not necessary as the soft tissues themselves, which we have respected, the joint capsule and a light dressing are responsible for this. - Local anesthetic, only affecting the foot, so the dose used is less. This non-invasive approach is fast, - No hemostasia (restriction of blood flow). As the size of the effective and costs less than you might incision is so small, there is little bleeding so there is no need for a think. Call us and we’ll get you back on tourniquet, thus avoiding all risks of cutting blood flow. - Less risk of infection. The small size of the incisions also your feet in no time. decreases the risk of infection. We also diagnose and treat: Bunions / - Barely visible scaring. Non Invasive Facelift with Botox and Fillers Botox is the first go to treatment for taking years off the face giving a refreshed open eyed appearance. Treatment of turkey neck with Botox before and after The areas of the face most commonly treated with Botox are: The forehead - Frown lines - Crow's feet

Smokers lines before and after Botox and filler

But many people do not realise that Botox can treat a number of other areas in the face. Having Botox in the top part of the face and not in the lower part can be a give away ‘Botox face’ but if the bottom half of the face is treated as well the whole overall appearance of the person becomes lifted and completely rejuvenated. Only the most experienced doctor however who knows his or her anatomy to perfection must be chosen to carry out these procedures otherwise disastrous results could occur! Advanced Botox injection procedures include: Droopy jowls - Gummy smile - Dimpled chin - Smokers lines - Sad mouths Turkey neck.

Before and after full face Botox and filler

Filler and Botox go hand in hand.... Filler can be used to replace volume lost around a sad mouth, to treat lip lines, to restore an uneven jawline or simply to fill in neck lines and cheek lines. Filler will recondition the skin but Botox will relax the muscles so that the filler stays in place longer. The amount of filler and the thickness of filler used will depend on the person's skin, the area treated and the results wanting to be achieved. The quality of the filler is of upmost importance to prevent any allergic reactions and granulomas (cysts), to achieve a homogenous result and to increase the longevity of the product. Osteopathy I would like to introduce myself. My name is Tonia Sheriff. I qualified as an Osteopath in 1995 in England having studied the required four year full-time course. Prior to moving to Spain in 1999 I practiced in London. Some of you may have heard of Osteopathy but may still not be quite clear on what it is and how it may help painful conditions. So here is a little bit of information on its history and approach to treatment. What is Osteopathy? Osteopathy is a safe and effective therapy that was founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in the U.S.A. in 1871. This ground-breaking therapy quickly gained popularity amongst his medical peers and was recognised as an effective and therapeutic treatment for painful conditions. Its beneficial effects on the health in general were also noted. Soon Osteopathic colleges were established. Osteopathy arrived in Britain in 1917. There are now hundreds of colleges all over the world. Whereas in many countries Osteopathy is still struggling to be recognised, in the United States and Great Britain it has been recognised by the medical profession and government. In fact, Osteopathy became the first major complementary health care profession to be accorded statutory recognition under the 1993 Osteopathy Act in Britain. Osteopathic studies include a profound understanding of anatomy, physiology, neurology, pathology, clinical medicine and bio-mechanics as well as osteopathic philosophy and treatment techniques. This 4 year university degree course assures high professional standards. Osteopaths have an in depth understanding of how the body functions and how imbalances in the structure can cause stress and strain on any of the soft tissues including muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. These damaged areas may in turn cause congestion and inflammation in surrounding tissues such as the organs and affecting the circulatory and lymphatic systems. Also any imbalance on the inside (around or in the organs) may cause irritation of the superficial tissues. Through careful case history taking, the osteopath begins to establish possible causes for the painful condition. Then, using their knowledge of bio-mechanics and function, a physical examination is carried out. The patient is asked to perform certain movements close to the affected area so that the origin of the restriction causing pain can be found. As the body functions as a whole unit other areas maybe examined and considered for treatment too. What is the treatment? Osteopathy is a hands-on treatment. After diagnosing the cause of the underlying problem, the osteopath will use a series of rhythmical stretching and articulatory movements and soft-tissue techniques to relax and stretch muscles and mobilise and balance joints. Adjustment techniques may then be used, to improve the range of movement and positioning of a joint, or series of joints, where and when necessary. If you have any specific questions, please send me an email to toniasheriff@gmail.com. For an appointment please call 96 583 4799 or 637 715 308 (Calpe). www.costablancaosteopaths.com.

The Top 10 Frequently Asked Questions About Cosmetic Surgery: Part 1 If you are considering cosmetic surgery, then the first step is to schedule a consultation. Most probably you will be wondering what cosmetic surgery questions you should ask your potential surgeon. To help, we have compiled a list of the 10 most frequently asked questions about cosmetic surgery. We will discuss the first 5 questions this month, and the second 5 questions next month. At Clinica El Arenal our goal is to improve patients’ appearance and self-esteem through the art and science of cosmetic surgery. Often, patients come to us asking questions that can help them decide if cosmetic surgery is a good fit for them. And, when you are planning to make such a big change to your appearance, there is no such thing as being too inquiring. Here are the first 5 of the most commonly asked cosmetic surgery questions: 1 Q: Am I a good candidate for cosmetic surgery? A: In general, non-smokers who are in good overall health and are currently at a healthy body weight are good candidates for cosmetic surgery. Those who suffer from serious health problems need to be assessed properly and discussed, but normally it can be done under certain specific protocols. 2 Q: What is the best age to have plastic surgery? A: There is no ´right age´ for plastic surgery. Treatments such as breast augmentation/reduction, tummy tucks, etc tend to be more common for younger patients, while older patients may be more likely to seek procedures such as an eyelid lift, brow lift, facelift or neck lift. 3 Q: How good will the results of the surgery be? A: It is very important for prospective patients to have realistic expectations for their surgery results. Honesty about your medical history, plastic surgery goals and any concerns you have is crucial so we can make an informed and realistic assessment about what procedures may be best for you. We schedule pre-surgical consultations with every patient to

Female Focus April 2019

discuss your desired results and evaluate your goals on a case-bycase basis. During the consultation, we will also discuss individual factors, such as your unique body type, bone structure, size, age and we will also review your health history and give you additional instructions for pre- and post-surgery. 4 Q: Is plastic surgery safe? A: As with all surgical procedures, some level of risk is possible. Our medical staff are highly trained and have many hours of surgical experience. We will do everything possible to minimise complications during your surgery. The risk is minimised as well, by the fact of not using general anaesthetic but sedation instead. Additionally, it is essential to follow all your pre- and postoperative instructions exactly, and thoroughly discuss any and all medical conditions with us before your procedure. This is the best way to ensure a smooth surgery and recovery process. 5 Q: How do I prepare for surgery? A: Our article last month (March issue) was all about 'Getting in Shape for Surgery'. Preparing both mentally and physically for cosmetic surgery procedures such as a breast augmentation, tummy tuck, facelift or brow lift, though fairly straightforward, is necessary for a successful surgical outcome. Dr Ignacio Poole is a specialist Surgeon with a Master in Aesthetic Surgery. He is also a certified family doctor / GP. If there is anything about your appearance that bothers you, however small, then there is an invitation waiting for you. Feel free to call into the clinic and find out about all the different services and procedures. The first consultative visit is completely free. Clinica El Arenal, Av Arenal 2, Jávea. Wedding hair! It’s the time of year when brides are visiting Spain in preparation for their big day! Spain has become a very popular destination for weddings for lots of reasons. The main one being the sunshine, the beautiful coast line, and of course the exquisite wines and beers, let alone the cuisine, all at an affordable cost! So what is the “in” look for brides this year? And what does Jo Black - Wedding Hair Expert - recommend? Well, long soft loose waves seem to be the most popular at the moment! Finger waving has at last returned to achieve this look. The only problem with this is the lasting effect in Spain’s fabulous climate! So as an alternative, to achieve such a look and keep it, Jo uses a hot iron tool which helps to shape the soft waves leaving a lasting result! Soft loose messy knot buns are another popular look. You would think something messy and tussled would be easy to achieve. Apparently not! Once again this style needs to hold its place for the day as well as the evening. A great result is always achieved during the prepping of any style, so Jo Black recommends plenty of volume powder and curl to help to mould the desired look. Hair-ups are always best done on dirty hair! Recently washed hair causes the hair to be soft and fluffy and can result in droppage! For any bride to be, a trial run is always recommended. This helps the bride to discuss any concerns and for her to try out a couple of styles beforehand so she knows her chosen look will be the one she wants. Aspe, KRU’s puppy, suggests the hair on a wedding day is just as important as the bride’s dress! Instagram: bridal_hair. Website: www.joblackweddinghairspecialist.com. Fallas has also been upon us! Fallera hair is Spain’s most traditional hairstyle. A remarkable hair style using real hair extensions plaited and blended in with the falleras natural hair and colour, and setting their hair into 3 pieces! Mónos. 3 large hair combs called peinetas are part of the fallera accessories! As well as the ornamental hairpins which help hold and design the figure of 8 in the back of the hair! This hair style can take up to 1½ hours to achieve! I’m still working on minimising this time with a bit more practice! Falleras often leave the hair in overnight using a stocking to hold hair in place! Or they take the alternative route and visit their hair salon at early hours each morning of fallas! Jo Black is KRU’s wedding hair and fallera hair professional! For more details contact KRU on 96 646 3970 or visit KRU which is just opposite Lidl in Jávea. See our advert on the Horoscopes page.

When the body is balanced and efficient, just like a well-tuned machine, it will function with the minimum of wear and tear, leaving more energy for living. Heidi Tryland is a UK qualified Osteopath. What to Do if in a Car Accident in Spain: Part One Continuing our series of articles about "What to do in the event of....", over the next two months we will look at what to do if you are involved in a car accident in Spain: Part one will cover what to do at the scene, who to call etc and Part two in May’s issue will cover how to fill in the accident report document for insurance after a car crash. The procedure in the event of a road traffic accident in Spain will de pend on the severity of the accident, whether there are injuries and if it is necessary for the police to be involved. What To Do at the Scene of an Accident · Stop immediately. · Always put on a reflective jacket before leaving the car (both passenger and driver). In Spain, it is obligatory to put on a reflective jacket. It is advisable for passengers to stay in the car if it is safe to do so and off the road, but in any case, they should not walk on the road without a reflective jacket, even in the day. When all the passengers are outside of the vehicles it is often a risk that they can be hit by other drivers. But if they do need to get out of the car, then they must wait somewhere safe for the police, ambulance, breakdown vehicle etc. · Switch hazard warning lights on, and place one warning triangle 50 metres in front of the car, and one 50 metres behind. · If you can, you should move the vehicle after taking some photos. You could be fined for obstructing the traffic or just for leaving the vehicle on the road. Unless the vehicles cannot be moved or there are people with serious injuries, vehicles must be pulled over as far as possible off the road. · All drivers involved must exchange details; registration number, name, address and insurance company. · Take the licence plate number (matricula) of all the vehicles and witnesses involved (this could be vital if the case goes to court). · Never sign any paperwork unless absolutely certain you understand and agree with it. · If damage is caused and the owner is not there to report it (e.g. a crash with a parked car or into someone’s property) it must be reported. If there have been injuries or fatalities · If there have been injuries or fatalities then you should call the police and ambulance. Call the Guardia Civil on 112 or Policia Local on 092 from a mobile or landline (calls are free) or use one of the SOS telephones located on motorways and main roads. · In accordance with basic first aid rules, you should keep the injured person warm and do not move a casualty unless they are in danger of further injury. Witnesses of an accident are obliged to contact the emergency services and assist the accident victims until help arrives (Delito de Omision del Deber de Socorro). It is a criminal offence to see someone injured and leave. However, once there is one person taking care of the injured until the emergency services arrive, the other people (witnesses or not) do not have to remain. · If the police attend the scene of an accident they will make an accident report. They may make charges of driving offences. When the police offi cers determine who is liable or at fault for the crash they could give them a ticket, and both drivers are obliged to carry out a breathalyser test and sometimes a drug test. · If a driver suspects a driver involved in the accident has been drinking or taking drugs then they must inform the police. · If there are no injuries and only minor damage caused there is no need to call the police. It’s been an amazing journey to get here. In 2004 Claire decided to spread her wings from Lancashire, England and move to Costa Blanca, Spain for a new venture, just herself and her 11 year old daughter Ainsley. Not knowing anyone here was daunting at first, but with her qualifications and knowledge of the industry (as Claires' mum was a well-known hairdresser in Burnley, Lancashire), she decided to start working self-employed in different salons in the local area. Building friends and clients along the way Claire decided to go it alone and open her own Claires Nail Room in Benidorm indoor market. Three years on she decided to move to the lovely coastal town of Albir to a bigger salon to include hair, beauty and nails. Salon Claires has gone from strength to strength over 8 years and built up a valuable reputation in the area and social media. In 2017 Claire saw a gap in the market for male grooming and decided to open a barbers in Alfaz Del Pi, Barberia No10. One year later here she is in Altea. Claire Alexander Studio, with their new concept bringing the salon experience and male grooming together under 1 roof. It’s a ‘Double A’ – Alfaz and Albir

By Jack Troughton

ALFAZ del Pi and its blue-eyed baby, beach resort Albir, are home to over 90 nationalities all determined to enjoy the laid back life of the Mediterranean coast. Immediate neighbours to the hustle and bustle of Benidorm – Spain’s most well-known holiday destination – there is a cosmopolitan population calling the municipality home and a healthy intake of visitors arriving every year. While Alfaz itself is 2km inland, Albir is on the coast and at the other end of the bay from Altea; a popular walk away, linked by a coastal road and wide footpath, with excellent views of Calpe’s Peñon de Ifach, one of the coast’s famous landmarks. Alfaz del Pi is 47km north of Alicante and visitors arrive from both the city and Valencia’s airport – the town is roughly between the two. And Alfaz itself is built in the foothills of the Sierra Gelada. It is a year round destination for holidaymakers because of its hot sunny summers and mild sunny winters; a winning combination that has attracted thousands of north Europeans wanting to share some of the sunshine – even the Romans set up home. The town dates back to the occupation of southern Spain by the Moors. The name ‘Alfaz’ derives from the Arabic for ‘sown land’; the area was used to grow fruit and almonds. The word ‘Pi’ was a later addition; it comes from the Valencian r e g i o n a l language word for pine tree; in 1786 villagers planted a pine in protest at the continued rule of the barony of historic Polop – things can move slowly in Spain, and this was achieved...but not until 1836. Agriculture continues to play a part in the local economy but the tourist boom of the 20th Century and the ease of travel means tourism has become an essential part of the economy. The municipality also became a landmark for freedom of movement; for some years Alfaz been renowned for having more foreign residents living there full time than its Spanish population and it is seen as an ideal place to put down retirement roots. A strong year-round population ensures there is a wealth of cultural and sporting events, and a host of associations and charities to attract expats – the town hall is in Alfaz and the town boasts a large casa de cultura and a calendar full of events. - PULL OUT & KEEP - PULL OUT & KEEP - PULL OUT & KEEP - PULL OUT & KEEP - PULL OUT & KEEP Continued from previous page The location of Alfaz and Albir also makes them a perfect place to enjoy a base – permanent or temporary – to strike out and explore. The arterial N-332 and the AP7 motorway are in easy reach; there is the nightlife of Benidorm minutes away and its famous theme parks, inland is fantastic scenery and it can be enjoyed on foot or on two wheels. Playa de Albir is a pebble beach but boasts a Blue Flag for the quality of the water and the amenities, plus little coves to explore – it also has a wonderful promenade separating the sea from the land and is lined with bars and restaurants, a great place to unwind. There is also a small sprinkling of Hollywood glamour; the promenade is called Paseo de las Estrellas – Promenade of the Stars. The pavement is inscribed with the names of actors honoured during the annual Alfaz del Pi film festival, which takes place every July.

Everyone should take the walk up to the lighthouse at least once. The building dominates the Parque Natural de la Sierra Gelada, the hill separating Albir from Benidorm – it is a paved footpath with plenty of stopping places to enjoy commanding views of the coast and sea. Enjoying a longer season with more favourable weather than back in the UK, Albir is also the home of Sporting Alfas Cricket Club and there is a social welcome for anyone missing the sound of leather on willow during the season – people are genuinely stunned to come across the club; one social media reviewer described it as “one of the wonders of the modern world”. Another ‘wonder’ of Alfaz del Pi is the annual celebration of the National Day of Norway; the municipality has the second largest Norwegian population in the world outside of Norway and second only to London. The town is twinned with Oslo and every May 17 there are flags carried aloft in parades and parties. The official Norwegian population is around 4,000, in fact with residents floating between home and Spain, it is estimated to be twice that number – there are Norwegian shops, schools, homes for the elderly and a Norwegian seaman’s church in Albir – the area is also visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists from Norway each year. Picture perfect; Charming Altea By Jack Troughton ALTEA’S historic old town is dominated by the domes of the church of Nuestra Señora del Consuela – Our Lady of Solace - and the landmark blue and white ceramic tiles are visible from miles around. Built at the top of a steep hill, the central church square is surrounded by a maze of narrow and winding cobbled streets and quaint traditional white homes – with characteristic colourful window boxes and flowerbeds - it remains a magnet for artists and photographers, foodies and holidaymakers. Just 10km north of the ‘kiss me quick’ beaches of Benidorm and south of Calpe and its domineering limestone Penon de Ifach rock, Altea is a true pearl of the Costa Blanca. Everything about the old town says culture; unlike some of the resorts along the 200km of the Costa, it says it with style...and quietly. And sheltered by the Sierra de Bernia, Altea enjoys a mild microclimate, making it a place to explore all year round but the old town comes to life at night, when the streets, bars, restaurants and family-owned shops, boutiques, and galleries are a bustling hive of activity. Visitors arriving in the town are most likely to come along the N-332 coastal highway, which separates Altea from its beaches, the mouth of the River Algar, and the promenade – and another area of restaurants and bars. The Altea stretch of the N-332 is a renowned bottleneck and traffic is heavy all year, but especially in peak season; perhaps a reason to take a break and explore. It is possible to reach the town by rail from Alicante; however, at present, the track heading north ends at Calpe with a bus service on to the Denia terminus. From the streets of the modern town, it is a steep climb up to the historic centre but by setting a leisurely pace there is much to enjoy; not least the stunning views back over the Mediterranean. For those who choose not to be mountain goats, the old town can be reached by car. However, the narrow streets are closed to the horseless carriage, although there are plenty of car parks a short distance away. The labyrinth of tiny streets call out to be discovered, including the ancient walls and gateways dating back to the 14th Century, built to defend the town from marauding Barbary pirates. A castle once stood on what is now the church square, Plaza de la Iglesia and the upper town was protected with sturdy walls with three gates – two of these remain, Veil Portal and Portal Nou. Today the church itself is a ‘must see’ attraction. Built in the 19th Century, it was completed in 1910 – and the site of a place of worship for over 900 years. Music and cultural events and exhibitions also fill the calendar in Altea – and like many Spanish communities there are bags of fiestas including a firework display famed across Europe for its pyrotechnics.

The event is staged on the Saturday closest to the feast day of San Lorenzo, August 10. The organisers light the first blue touch paper at midnight and with crowds hitting an average of 50,000, it’s a busy night got the town. Many people sit on the beach to watch the fireworks launched from Castel de l’Olla; others take to the sea and watch from boats moored in the bay. In June, look out for the unique l’Arbret Festival in Altea, part of the celebrations of the Festival of San Juan. It is based on an ancient pagan ritual of the summer Solstice and the fertility of the land – a large poplar tree is felled on the banks of the river and carried by 50 young people into the town. Later in the evening young men carry the trunk on their shoulders to the church square in the old town. Also in June there is a ‘fiesta’ in honour of San Antonio and a mini rock festival is held over the weekend evenings closest to the saint’s day, June 13 – bands taking to the stage on Friday and Saturday evenings at about 11pm. During the day there’s plenty going on too with traditional games and giant paellas – even an afternoon ‘mascaleta’ when hundreds of firecrackers are set off. In September, this year from September 15 to September 25, Altea stages it version of the Moors and Christians festival, commemorating the 500-year rule by the Moors over much of Spain, and the Christian reconquest – from the off it is colourful and noisy!

MALCOLM'S MUSINGS The Delso Phenomenon by Malcolm Smith

Pedro Delso was a phenomenal artist. He was an outstanding modernoriginal painter, a brilliant sculptor and ceramist. Unfortunately, he died in 1994 just before his 70th birthday. Born in Soria he studied widely and created his own individual style, artistic ‘Triangulism’ and consequentially was widely exhibited the world over. He was also obsessed by Cervantes and his fantasy knight, Don Quixote to such a degree that he built a larger-than-life size windmill and numerous statues of the ‘Don’ and his squire, Sancho Panza within the grounds of his estate at his adopted home in L’ Alfaz del Pi. Ever the consummate workaholic, his modus vivendi was ‘my art is my work’. A 24 hour day was insufficient for Pedro. I got to know him in the nineties and although he spoke no English and my Spanish was virtually non-existent, we became close friends to such a degree that when I wrote my novel “No Problema – you must be joking” he insisted on illustrating it and did so in his own exotic style. Sadly, my book and his drawings were not published until a couple of months after he died. At this stage his unique ‘Triangulism’ had already received recognition the world over. Whilst working at a furious pace on his vivid paintings, symbolic ‘Triangulism’ and Quixotic creations he also transformed his Alfaz estate into a permanent museum which today can still be enjoyed by visitors. Signe, his wife acts as curator and guide. Meanwhile his birth place also honoured him naming a street and the markets of San Esteban do Gormaz after him. His Cervantes fixation is manifest in his estate’s grounds. An iron (do I mean ironic?) effigy of Don Quixote stands challenging a stubby life-size La Mancha type windmill crowning Pedro’s domain. That a fabulously constructed ceramic Sancho Panza also features in Museo Delso goes without saying. In his very limited leisure time Pedro was equally active and ‘way out’ as he was with his work. I was in his company on one occasion at a conference in a large restaurant where ‘suits’ were de rigueur. On arrival, Pedro glanced around, grimaced, viewed the scene and strode out obviously planning a ‘volte face.’ He went to his car which contained a large boot crammed with a variety of garish outfits. His five guests ….. including a senior officer of the Guardia ….. were summarily garbed with regal adornment. One tall lady was tribally dressed in an American Indian Chief’s regalia including a feathered head-dress, another rather hesitant guest was clad like Tarzan whilst Pedro himself regaled himself as a Norse King. The group then strode behind Pedro to their table positions as gasps of amazement stunned remaining guests. I could enlarge upon my other experiences with this larger-then-life character, but I’ll just report on my first Delso interview for a local paper. We scoffed jamon serano off the bone in chunks and slurped cloudy ‘vino’ plonk whilst conversing in colloquial pigeon slang! N.B. Anyone wishing to visit Museo Delso should first telephone 96 588 95 17 or email: signe@museodelso.com.

Springtime Spring has sprung and with the hot start to the year your plants will burst into life. If you haven’t pruned back your plants, then now is definitely the time to get it done. It is sometimes the most satisfying time of year in the garden.

Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth

It’s not like the garden looks stunning after a chop back, but it is the reward of watching the small buds and new shoots start to shoot from the plant, knowing that soon it will be covered in flowers and look great again in no time. It’s also a good time to check irrigation systems etc as well. We do unfortunately get called out quite a lot to deal with problems which other garden companies have created within the garden, it can be botched artificial grass, bad pruning and treatment of plants, wonky irrigation systems the list can be a bit tiring sometimes, especially when it is a so called professional who has done the work. We have recently done two lots of work for a customer, we were lowering a level within the garden and discovered that the garden company who built the garden hadn’t even bothered to remove the pots from the climbers against the fence. This wasn’t some small company like mine but one of the big garden centre companies. After completing a second piece of work for the customer they asked if we could check the irrigation system as they thought it wasn’t working. The same garden company, who also maintained the garden, had just turned off the irrigation, you could say – ok, as it has been winter. After checking the system, I could see all the information on the screen of the programmer was off, date, time, run times etc were all wrong. This loss of information normally happens when you have a power failure in the house and consequently the information gets lost, most systems have a battery back up to make sure this doesn´t happen. This system did have a battery back up, but the company that installed it didn’t bother to remove the plastic protector which stops the battery connecting when the system was first installed a couple of years earlier, this is why the data had been lost. More to the point they had visited the garden on countless occasions and hadn’t set the problem right. I don’t want to moan about other companies because no one is faultless but when a highly paid, even expensive company makes such ridiculous mistakes it is just not right. Charlesworth Gardens work our hardest to create not only beautiful gardens that work well, but we make sure that even the basic things are dealt with.

Plant of the month.

This month I have decided that any plant that is in bloom now is the plant of the month, how can anyone resist a blossoming tree or fresh daffodils, the springtime flowers are always wonderful and signal the coming growing season. If you want to spruce up your garden with some extra plants, then Charlesworth Gardens will order and deliver to your door whatever plants you want at better prices than the garden centres. Get out and enjoy your garden this year.

A passion for interiors I’ve always had a passion for interiors and remember starting out by designing and decorating my own bedroom at the age of 7 (in a very on trend pink and grey scheme apparently!). Despite choosing a career in Chemistry, I continued with interior design as a hobby, studying in my spare time and constantly updating my, my friends and my family’s homes. A love of gorgeous fabrics It was the move to Spain that finally allowed me to indulge in my deep routed passion and discover a new one; the wonderful world of fabrics and curtain design. I opened my first home interiors shop in 2004 and since then it has developed into a successful interior design business which specialises in the creation of quality curtains and soft furnishings. Curtains and soft furnishings In our huge on-site workroom, Helen our chief seamstress leads a team using traditional hand sewing techniques to provide a superb range of window dressings and soft furnishings. From voiles, sheers and drapes, to cushions, headboards, bedspreads and upholstery, their attention to detail and quality finishing has ensured hundreds of happy clients, delighted with the final results. Comprehensive service In addition to our work with fabrics, we also offer an extensive range of interior blinds from the best suppliers in Spain. List Your Property With Hamiltons… And Get It Sold! You might be forgiven in thinking that the housing market is taking a Brexit hit, but our experience at Hamiltons is that the property market is still alive and well. And Brits are still leading the way when it comes to buying in the Northern Costa Blanca, making up for approximately half of all foreigner purchases. Other nationalities buying include German, Dutch, French and Belgians. That’s all well and good, but what does it mean if you want to sell your property. Hamiltons is in the business of selling property and we’ve had a great start to the year. To be honest, this is not a surprise to us as we’ve set up our agency with the sole aim of selling your property. We’ve steadily expanded our coverage and have 4 offices in Moraira, Jávea, Calpe and Jalón. No doubt you’ve seen that plans are underway to open up a new office in Denia (which we currently serve from our Jávea and Jalón offices), and in addition we’ve put our first roots down in Altea by partnering with an established local estate agent. All our offices have a team of multi-language staff which means we can handle buyers from across Europe and you’ll find us always open during office hours (no stickers on the door saying “back later”!). We study the market and take an honest approach with pricing. This is often the most tricky part of the listing as vendors want the best price for their property. We understand that but will always advise where the market price is based on experience and knowledge of the areas we cover. And because it’s so wide in all the major towns, our view on the market is much more robust. Put it all together and we get properties sold. It’s as simple as that. If you’re looking to sell, then don’t just list with anyone, sell it with Hamiltons. For further information see the advert on page 53 in the Property Section. Female Focus April 2019

Darkness Into Light to host second annual walk in Costa Blanca Darkness into Light, the global campaign to promote awareness of suicide and self harm prevention has announced that they have formed a charity partnership with Spanish Charity AFESOL Salud Mental, an organisation that looks after all aspects of mental health. The Darkness Into Light charity walk was formed 11 years ago in Ireland with the charity Pieta House. From its first walk with 400 participants, this has now escalated into a global movement. In 2019, over 200 venues around the globe, with an estimated 200,000 walkers will be taking part in the global walk. Following a good attendance in 2018, the Costa Blanca Darkness into Light team will be hosting the second annual walk, which takes place on Saturday 11 May. The walk will depart from Gogarty's Bar at La Zenia at 5.30am and the 5km silent walk will commence towards Cabo Roig, with a beautiful reflective pause at La Zenia beach, where walkers see the darkness turn into light as the sun rises. To register for the walk and for more detail: https://www.darknessintolight.ie/event/costa-blanca. The DIL team can be contacted by email at: dilcostablanca@gmail.com or costablanca@darknessintolight.ie.

The Arts Society Marina Alta Next presentation 4 April at Salones Canor Teulada. Doors open 10am. for registration.

Art of the Far East & West (East meets West ) by Amanda Herries. Oriental and Western cross cultural and artistic influences. Having read Anthropology & Archaeology at Cambridge 1978-1980, but an archaeologist by training, Amanda Herries worked at the Museum of London for ten years, specialising in social history and the decorative arts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and lecturing and writing. In 1988 she went to live in Tokyo, Japan, with her family. While in Japan, she wrote extensively on Japanese culture and art collections and she continued lecturing for Japanese audiences, often appearing on television. In 1995 she returned with her family to Britain, bringing a Japanese tea-house to feature in a new garden in Scotland. She now lectures on a number of English and Anglo-Japanese subjects, including gardens, the ceramic ‘Japanese’ willow pattern plate and dolls houses. The central theme of Amanda’s lecture is the creation of Japanese gardens in Europe, which peaked in the early 20th century. She begins by describing three types of Japanese garden - dry, tea and strolling or viewing garden and how they came to the west following the Japanese-English Exhibition in 1910. This led to the publication of many catalogues advertising Japanese plants and ornaments. With the western love of multicoloured planting schemes, plethora of ornaments and vermilion coloured bridges together with a reluctance to prune or restrain plants, Amanda has questioned whether gardens in the west would ever be real Japanese gardens. As has become standard fare, a glass of wine & soft drinks will be available to members & guests to allow socialising with the Committee and Speaker after the lecture. For further details of the Society, the venue and programme for 2019 see our website www.marinaaltaarts.com or for membership membership@marinaaltaarts.com.

Moraira-Teulada U3A International Walking Football Tournament On the 25th February MorairaTeulada Walking Football team hosted visiting U.K. team, Manchester Corinthians and Spanish based teams, San Miguel Strollers, Formentera, Monte Mentals and two home teams Moraira A and Moraira B. Each team played one another on a League basis, with the top two competing in a one-off final for the trophy. As the Corinthians team stayed in Benidorm and had enjoyed what that resort has to offer, they probably didn’t have the best preparation. Having travelled to the tournament with a big reputation, they finished 2nd from bottom! The top two positions were mainly contested by 3 teams: Moraira A and B and Formentera. Despite having the best defensive record Moraira B lost out to Formentera for second position, with Moraira A being the comfortable league leaders. Moraira A continued their impressive league results, with an assured final performance, beating Formentera 1-0. Special mention for the Moraira WF Lady members who hosted the event and made our guests warmly welcome. Thanks also to Lynn Clark, U3A Group Coordinator who presented the winning trophy. For more information on this and other groups please visit www.u3amoraira-teulada.org.

Dancing in Denia U3A Denia's first tea dance was a great success with three professional dancers leading the members into the rumba, tango, ballroom jive and many more popular but long forgotten dances. After a few, bumps, bruises and squashed toes the beginners were gliding across the floor. Many members were already very good dancers and were a pleasure to watch. It was quite a relief when an interval was announced and we were able to sit down and enjoy a traditional afternoon tea a la Español. U3A Denia's president, Ken Yendell, took the microphone and asked everyone if we should hold another dance. The response was a unanimous 'yes!' Members may have left a little fatter after the delicious scones but they were also considerably fitter. Roll on the next tea-dance. If you would like to join U3A Denia, see www.u3adenia.com. HomeEspaña raise €2,000 on Altea charity trek for Help of Denia and Marina Alta HomeEspaña held an 11km sponsored trek in Altea in February to help raise funds for Help of Denia and Marina Alta, who offer short term support and assistance to local people with their medical or other health related needs. The sponsored trek invited employees, friends and family to enjoy a walk along the Altea coastline to the lighthouse of Albir, HomeEspaña raised over €2,000 from donations. Clare Johnston, New Business Director said: “The walk was a great success and many of us got involved and trekked all the way up to the lighthouse of Albir which had breathtaking views. It definitely was a great way to end the Dry January month that our staff got involved in and all the money made from sponsors and donations will go to this amazing organisation Help of Denia and Marina Alta.” Help of Denia and Marina Alta assist the local community by: – Providing advice, assistance and support to those in need. – Providing neighbourly assistance to people who are ill, disabled or housebound. – Providing a range of medical and home nursing equipment for short term use. – Providing a Help desk and Interpreters at Denia hospital. – Visiting English speaking patients in the Denia hospitals. – Supporting individual carers of family members, by providing them with some respite. Jaguars visit Pottery Village

The Jaguar Enthusiast Club of the Costa Blanca region held their March meeting by visiting the pottery village of Agost in the province of Alicante.

Members met for coffee at Torrellano before proceeding on their 26km run together for a pre-arranged visit to Alfarería pottery where a live demonstration of skilful pottery making was watched by members, while their big cats lined the street in a display of Jaguar splendor. Lunch had been arranged at the restaurant Don Camillo where 50 members relaxed on the sunny terrace with a refreshment prior to sitting down to eat a superb meal of four courses. Jávea U3A News: Boost for charity

The association’s nominated charity for 2018, Todos Juntos Jávea, was presented with a cheque for €3,113, collected from various fundraising and raffles. The charity’s president, Carmen Alesanco and secretary Marion Kenworthy, expressed their deepest gratitude when they were handed the money by U3A president Val Dromgoole. The U3A’s chosen charity for 2019 is Help of Denia and Marina Alta, and its representative, Catherine Perez, came along to the meeting to explain to members the voluntary work it carries out in the area. Membership of the Jávea U3A, which was around 1,400 at its peak last year, continues to strengthen with 200 new members already joining in January and February. Also, the Jávea U3A Facebook page continues to grow in popularity, with more than 500 members having now become “friends”.
