Searching for the cure for Type 1 Diabetes
Specsavers Ópticas has signed an agreement to fundraise for the charity DiabetesCERO throughout 2024, to help them find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. They aim to raise over €5,000 for the charity, to fund important research projects in Spain searching for a cure.
During the fundraising period, stores will be taking part in challenges and activities to raise funds. They will also be talking to customers and local residents about diabetic retinopathy, one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in the world.
Chantelle Hayward, store director of Specsavers Ópticas in Calpe explains why they chose DiabetesCERO as their official charity for 2024, ‘Diabetes is a very big problem on a global level and one that is growing quickly, with an estimated 537 million people in the world suffering from the disease. This disease is associated with a range of potentially serious health complications, if not correctly controlled.’
‘One of these complications, which we’re seeing more and more of during eye tests, is diabetic retinopathy. If this is undiagnosed and untreated, this can develop into Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) and cause permanent vision impairment and blindness. That’s why we’re supporting DiabetesCERO by pledging to raise €5,000 for the charity in 2024 and want to educate and inform people in our community about the link between diabetes and vision loss. We encourage anyone with diabetes to ensure they carefully manage glucose levels to prevent health complications. They should also have regular eye tests, including the latest technology, to check the health of the eyes and identify any nerve damage early, before it affects their vision.’
In Spain there are over 1,000 people diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes every year, and most of those are under 15 years old. This is a growing problem, yet its cause is not known and there is no cure. The charity DiabeteCERO wants to change that by funding research projects in Spain to find the cure to Type 1 Diabetes.
There are collection tins in all nine Specsavers Ópticas stores in Spain, where donations can be made to help fund vital research into Type 1 Diabetes. To find your nearest store to donate, visit www.specsavers.es.
Are you prepared to protect your family?
We can assist you with our Bespoke Life and Mortgage Protection policies to protect those that are most important to you, should the worse happen.
The first question would be – have you taken out Life Insurance? You may have a Mortgage Protection policy, which means on your death the mortgage will be paid. But of course, this is does not provide your family with some financial security when they really need it.
Mortgage Protection is a good policy to have as it will pay off any mortgage you have on your house, keeping your family secure in their home. This is death only cover, however there are some additional options you can add on if you require them. For example for Mortgage Payment protection, for €100,000 of cover for a 50 year old can be as little as €305 per year.
Whereas Life Insurance provides a payment to your family.
You can tailor the Life policy to your own requirements and create a Bespoke Life Insurance – whether to cover the initial costs incurred on your death or give your family a lump sum to provide for their future.
For example Life cover of €50,000 for a 50 year old, can be as little as €155 a year
Our Bespoke Life policies can give you the cover most suited to your needs with standard death only cover and additional covers to include:-
- Repatriation
- Permanent Absolute Disability
- Death by Accident
- Death by Traffic Accident
- Permanent Absolute Disability due to an Accident
- Permanent Absolute Disability due to a Traffic Accident
- Serious Illness cover/Serious Female illness cover
You do need to be resident in Spain for these policies and there will be a simple health/medical questionnaire that you will need to complete online. These policies are available with monthly direct debit payments, and our policies will be in English. Alongside the Life policies, we can provide various Accident Policies to give your protection throughout your life and provide support should you sadly experience a life changing accident.

Twice a week during March I enjoyed watching as our road was used for the rehearsal for the Easter parades, when the 'tronos' with Jesus or Mary are carried through the streets. This took place from about 10pm and involved a 'Hermandad' group learning the moves they have to make whilst under, and carrying the trono. To practise they used a large table covered in a larger cloth which nearly came down to the ground. From our terrace I could just see lots of legs under the table shuffling along. Anyone unfamiliar with these parades must have wondered what on earth they were doing.
One thing that struck me was the number of cars which came along the street, saw what was happening and reversed the whole length of the street to find an alternative route. This also happened with the dustbin lorry more than once. There was no tooting, no complaining, they just reversed and went about their journey on an alternative route.
Wouldn't it be great if the world could be a bit more like this, and people, instead of complaining at every obstacle or inconvenience, looked for a solution.
Until next time, take care and be kind.

Astronomy on the internet.
Fear not, I'm not going to guide you through all the mass of technical scientific articles available to anyone with a computer. It's true that a huge amount of such information is available, but if that interests you, I doubt you'll be reading my humble efforts.
I think it would be fair to say that many budding astronomers searching online are either looking for information such as when will the Moon rise etc. or an explanation of something new to them. One of the most useful web sites is called 'time and date.com', it has a simple but good space section where you can find a great deal of stuff presented in a simple way. If you want to know about where the Moon or Planets are, or know about eclipses and plenty of other stuff, this is the site I'd recommend, and there are few, if any annoying pop ups and adverts.
Another tried and tested web site is 'heavens-above.com' This is terrific for information about satellites, including the international space station. It also includes much more such as a good star chart, and the positions of constellations and the planets. I use and recommend this site because it's simple and quick to use, easy to understand and you won't be bombarded with adverts. Naturally there are a huge number of other web sites available, and the choice is yours to make, but those two will take care of all the needs of the casual observer without any hassle.
Next we come to YouTube, a vast resource where anyone and everyone seems to be an expert. Our group makes extensive use of it, but we're quite selective about what we share. As an example, if you search the site for Mars, you'll get a vast range of videos to see, many are excellent, some are plumbing the depths of stupidity. As a general rule, the more sensationalist a video title, the less you should trust it. Also if the presenter is one of those who is rambling, and wants to sound clever rather than be clever, steer clear. Another thing to beware of is that You Tube remembers what you look at, and tries to offer more of the same, so if you watch a few silly videos, you'll be offered more like them.
So, what would I recommend on YouTube? Obviously there are the main space agencies, you can trust what you hear to be correct, they won't claim Elvis is on an alien Mars base, and yes, that was once claimed. My current best suggestion is called 'Mars in 4k'. It uses video from the Curiosity Mars rover in very high resolution, and it is as close as you'll ever get to standing on an alien planet. One last thing, my wife has one of those 3d headsets, a fantastic toy she got during lock down. If you try Mars in 4k on one of those, you really do feel like you are there, and you'll never forget the feeling.

Latest news on Windows 12:
It is still quite early to know the official release date of Windows 12. But taking into account that Windows 11 went on the market in October 2021 and that Microsoft's new update cycle has closed in three years, we hope that Windows 12 arrives during the last quarter of 2024/beginning of 2025. Nothing to worry about just yet, just keep continuing using the operating system you are using now.

Financial Advice from our family to yours
The role of a Financial Planner
Most people will have heard of “Financial Planner” as a job role, but what do we do?
How can we help you?
The main purpose of a Financial Planner is to help clients reach their financial goals and objectives, but how we do this will depend on the individual, couple or family in question. This is because goals and objectives are subjective and can vary significantly from person to person. There is no “one size fits all”. We meet clients who find themselves at all different stages of life; ranging from those working with young families, to others who have already retired. For some, ensuring that sufficient regular savings are being made for the future is the main goal, whilst for others capital preservation and risk management of existing assets is the priority. Successful planning can only be implemented once advisers have a full understanding of a client's circumstances and what they are looking to achieve. In depth discussions with a financial planner can help individuals or couples identify shortfalls or areas of concern not previously thought of. Strategies can then be put in place to cover short-term requirements, longer term needs, or a combination of both.
Common short-term demands would include things like paying for children's education fees, repaying loans or creating an adequate “emergency fund”. Longer-term objectives could include portfolio servicing and potentially estate planning. Servicing of investments requires risk management; something which is often overlooked but can have a big impact in terms of performance over time.
Summarising the above, a financial planner takes a holistic approach to financial management and can formulate plans with the help of longevity forecasts or cashflow modelling. These additional tools can often prove to be extremely useful for clients, who can see their finances via a combination of figures and graphics, in addition to any verbal confirmations. If finances are a concern for you, or you'd like to chat through any doubts you may have, why not get in contact with our family-run business to see if we can help?

Unless you are in the fortunate minority of women who have never had a urinary tract infection (UTI), you will know the symptoms well. You might feel a frequent urgency to urinate yet pass little urine when you go, your urine might be cloudy, blood-tinged, and or strongsmelling. Up to 30% of women who have had a urinary tract infection, the infection returns within three to six months.
If you have repeated UTIs, you would have experienced the toll they take on your life. However, you may take some comfort in knowing that they are not likely to be the result of anything that you have done. They are not due to poor hygiene or something else that women have brought on themselves. Some women and men are just prone to them.
Recurrent UTIs are usually managed by long-term antibiotic use, which in turn can cause antibiotic resistance and an adverse effect on our gut microbiome which is essential to our overall health.
Available now is a revolutionary vaccine that raises protective, long-term antibody responses against UTI-causing bacteria helping to stop future UTI infections.
Don’t suffer in silence, contact our GP at Clinica Britannia to consult whether this treatment is a suitable option for you.

See Dalí from a different angle

The Cybernetic Dalí experience takes visitors through an exciting journey of his dreamlike universe with large-format projectives, interactive installations and holograms showing how his work is the result of open, provocative and scientific thought.
Born in Figueres, Girona, in 1904, Salvador Dalí became a renowned surrealist artist with works including his iconic melting clocks and dreamworlds where everyday objects are transformed in bizarre ways. His most recognisable works include The Persistence of Memory - featuring the melting clocks, Crucifixion, Galatea of the Spheres and Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening.
The show is being held at the Bombas Gens Center d’Arts Digitals art centre in Avenida de Burjassot, 54-56, Valencia, until May 27. Bombas Gens Center d'Arts Digitals links new generation art and technology with a lively agenda, including exhibitions, events, activities, guided heritage tours and specialised training programmes.
The centre is inside renovated warehouses which once housed an old hydraulic pump factory with a beautiful Art Deco façade. Guided tours are held daily for visitors to take a look inside this heritage complex. As well as seeing the old factory, the tour also take you around a Civil War shelter, a 15th century winery and a Mediterranean garden. The one-hour tour is held in Spanish and English during the weekends.

Articles by Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.comKnowing who to call when you hear the scream
Trust me, I know from experience as primary carer for 2 elderly parents that knowing who to call in a medical emergency gives me immense peace of mind.
It’s very upsetting when a loved one is hurt, or in distress and having just one phone number programmed into my phone and just a 4 digit number to quote means I can summon help super-fast. No need to explain who we are or where we live, they already know as the membership number brings up all our preprogrammed details and help is on its way, allowing me to go back to comforting my loved one.
I’ve had to call on the services of Amigos Europeos de Javea several times over the last few years, for heart attacks, falls, agonising stomach pains, and each and every time the service has been so professional, swift, efficient and kind. We are so very lucky to have this service available in this area.
If you are not already a member, then please do this today, it really is worth every cent. I hope you don’t need to use it, but believe me, if you do, the relief that you have with this team behind you goes a long way to taking some of the stress away from an upsetting situation.
PLEASE DON'T LEAVE IT TOO LATE. You never know when you might need their service. Becoming a member is incredibly simple, just telephone Laure Bolufer the Registration Manager, or call in and see her at their office. And at just €60 for a whole year for the whole family, honestly, I truly believe it would be a silly thing for anyone not to have their wonderful service.
So please do yourself and your family the biggest of favours and register with the AAEdJ right now. Their fleet of ambulances covers most of the Marina Alta, including most of the inland areas. Like us you never know when you may need them, but you will be Oh So relieved if ever you do.

Want a 2nd date?
In the ‘olden days’ of dating before online apps came out, people used to see, meet or know each other before even arranging a 1st date. However, these days where dating has gone ‘online’ and you arrange a date based on a photo, a profile, or a picture of the sky or trees then getting past a first date of meeting a person for the first time could possibly be of low probability.
That person may seem OK from a distant photo, but it may be a different story when close up and personal! Of course, many factors could play a part in dating failures. There is one thing that can make all the difference, and that’s your smile. ‘Smile and the whole world smiles with you’, they say, but that smile could be a show stopper if it looks neglected. The flash car, the new outfit, the blue eyes, the blonde curls, the fascinating conversation, pale into insignificance if that person had not taken care of their teeth. An attractive, healthy smile emanates well-being and happiness, and most people wish to meet that sort.
The next detail …bad breath. That is a complete no-no and it is remarkably common, not something you can judge for yourself though. In fact, most people who do not visit the dentist or hygienist regularly will have stagnant areas in their mouths unbeknownst to them that harbour the mature bacteria that are the cause of bad breath… if that person could be you, then it’s time to act….
Book your appointment for a checkup with a friendly dentist you can trust, ask questions like how can I improve my teeth and my smile?
Can my oral hygiene be improved? Do I have any gum disease that can cause bad breath? Or indeed areas beyond the reach of brushes like impacted wisdom teeth for example.
Scared of the dentist? Let’s start with a visit to freely discuss your fears (which are all too common) and see if we can find the easiest ways to smile improvement, with small steps to rebuild your confidence and get your dental issues sorted.
Ready for a visit to the dentist or dental hygienist?

NATURAL LIPS TO ADMIRE
2 SYRINGES FOR 1 IN NOVEMBER
Most women long for beautifully shaped lips - perfectly symmetrical, beautifully shaped and hydrated. Many of us suffer with dry, chapped, uneven lips. Unfortunately, as we age our lips lose the volume they had in youth. Sometimes enhancing and defining the lips is all that is needed, but generally after the age of 40 lips start to turn inwards and develop lipstick "bleeding" lines. Mouth corners droop and give us a sad appearance, nose to mouth lines get more pronounced as do the puppet (marionette) lines, and the whole mouth area appears flatter.
There is still a lot of anxiety around the treatment of lips and most of us have seen celebrities on TV with lips that look "overdone" or the famous "trout pout". This causes a lot of unnecessary worry and fear that lips will look unnatural.
Dr Carolyn Carbasse, our aesthetics specialist, has years of experience in the enhancement and augmentation of lips. Her expert eye and attention to detail mean that you will have the beautiful lips you have longed for, with lovely, natural results.
Make the most of our 2 for 1 offer to give you something to really smile about this Christmas holiday!

The Arts Society Marina Alta presents MASTER OF SUSPENSE: ALFRED HITCHCOCK.
Lecturer: John Francis. 8 May.
After moving to Hollywood, Hitchcock created several masterpieces of cinema including Vertigo (1958) and Psycho (1960). Vertigo has been recently voted by critics as the best film ever, overtaking Citizen Kane. Together we will explore Hitchcock's dark films about human obsession. Taking a shower still fills many people with dread and foreboding thanks to the Hitchcock modern Horror classic of 1960. A full analysis of Hitchcock's masterful technique and influences will be the central focus of this lecture. The French New Wave critics of Cahiers du Cinema argued that Hitchcock’s films should be regarded as artistic masterworks. John Francis is an inspirational speaker who has taught film, art and pedagogy at universities, plus delivered lectures and workshops in the USA, Beijing, Malaysia and the UK. Initially trained as a painter, he went on to be artist in residence for the state of Texas. Later in his career, John produced and directed several short films and animations.
The Arts Society Marina Alta (TASMA) presentations are held at two locations:

April update - Project 4 All
Homelessness in our community is increasing and sadly there are now many people who have a place to live but do not have the money to buy food for themselves or their families.
Project 4 All has launched a new Food Bank initiative to help the people in our community who have the facilities to cook but sadly, do not have the money to buy food. We are asking for donations of sustainable items of food, such as tins, packets etc, that we can make into a shopping bag of food for each person. The main drop off point for non- perishable items of food is the Halfway House Calle Purissima 48, Benissa. Also, Letters R Us Ctra. Moraira-Teulada 62, 03724 Moraira is a drop off point. Support can also be given to Project 4 All by joining our membership scheme and receiving a Project 4 All membership card.

Seasonal tips
By Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.comThroughout recorded history, people have adored asparagus and though culinary tastes frequently change over the years, this luscious spring vegetable remains as sought after today as it was centuries ago. Originally native to western Asia, northern Africa and most of Europe, the arrival of the annual asparagus crop is still regarded as an epicurean event celebrated by special fetes in certain areas of our own Marina Alta.
Spain is expected to produce 44,000 tonnes of asparagus this year, 1000 tonnes more than in 2021, and this demand is expected to increase year on year for the foreseeable future.
Of the total produced by Spanish growers some 40% will go to the domestic market, with the remaining 60% currently being exported, mainly to France, Germany and Switzerland. However, new target markets are being energetically pursued in a variety of exotic locations, including Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern destinations, as well as to America and Japan.
The asparagus season in Spain typically runs from April to July. During this time, we can all enjoy fresh and flavourful asparagus from various regions. Spanish asparagus comes in different varieties. The white asparagus is grown under rows of banked earth, shielded from sunlight. It is considered a rare delicacy due to its labour-intensive cultivation process. In Europe, chefs almost always use the highly prized white asparagus, which offers up unique luscious notes of corn and artichokes.
To cook white asparagus, scrape the outer skin gently before immediately plunging into boiling water, to avoid discolouration. Boil with a touch of olive oil and salt for precisely 16 minutes before draining, and serve at once with hollandaise sauce. This method, according to a local Xàbian market trader and self proclaimed asparagus expert is the best way to make the most of this seasonal delight. I can only say that it certainly worked for me.
Unsurprisingly, in addition to our own region’s small fetes, some parts of Spain celebrate the asparagus with its own designated festival. Since its inception in 1932, the Fira d’Espàrrecs Gavà (Gavà Asparagus Festival) held in Barcelona has trumpeted the annual arrival of the highly prized Spring delicacy. It is one of Spain's oldest ongoing culinary fairs—interrupted only by the Spanish Civil War and, more recently, Covid. Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus was said to have organised elite military units to search out this vegetable. He would then find the fastest runners to take the fresh asparagus spears into the frozen Alps for storage purposes. He also coined the term ‘velocius quam asparagi conquator’ which means to do something quicker than you can cook asparagus similar to our ‘two shakes of a lamb’s tail’. Ancient Greeks also harvested wild asparagus and connected this vegetable to their goddess of love, Aphrodite. Numerous other cultures have also considered freshly sprouted asparagus a symbol of fertility.
The asparagus plant appeared in an Egyptian frieze about five thousand years ago, with Queen Nefertiti allegedly also an asparagus fan. Archaeologists found traces of asparagus on dishes when excavating the Pyramid of Sakkara, along with other coveted foods such as figs and melons.
In Ancient China, honoured guests were treated, upon their arrival, with an asparagus footbath. When the Emperor Charles V (15001558) of the powerful Habsburg Empire decided to visit Rome without warning anyone of his arrival, a sense of panic ensued because the emperor had arrived during a time of fasting. One clever cardinal prepared three different asparagus recipes. They set the plates on perfumed cloths and offered the emperor three exquisite wines – and he was said to praise the delicacies he was offered for years to come.
French monasteries included this plant in their gardens 600 years ago – and, if you wanted to please the Sun King, Louis XIV, you could bring his second wife, Madame de Maintenon, a new asparagus recipe. She gathered them into a book and asparagus soup á la Maintenon is still prized today.
For centuries, people have included asparagus in their Easter dinners because its fast growth in the spring symbolises resurrection.
Modern-day plant expert Fritz-Martin Engel has effectively summed up the types of people who have appreciated asparagus over the centuries: “Pharaohs, emperors, kings, generals, and great spiritual leaders, princely poets such as Goethe and gourmands like Brillat-Savarin - all of them ate and eat asparagus with great enthusiasm."
Whether you prefer white, green or wild asparagus, Spain offers a delightful array of flavours during this season.
The Benefits of CBBA’s 1-Stop Shop Philosophy
The Costa Blanca Business Association is a group of local businesses ranging from tradespeople to legal, from marketing services to property services. They meet every 2 weeks where they exchange referrals for business.
Recently, Jeff Morrow of Coast and Country Painters was asked to quote to repaint a pool coronation and surrounding ballustrade. No problem, Jeff gets asked this all the time. He has the knowledge of the special paint required, how to properly prepare the coronation, and the team and expertise to do the job properly.
Whilst with the client, he was asked if he knew anyone who could solve a problem with the pipework. His neighbour’s pipework had recently failed and he wanted to be sure he was OK.
Jeff called Simon Spragg of PTS Pools and asked him to pop around and take a look. Sure enough, the pipework was on the verge of failing, which would have left the customer with a very nasty problem, and a huge water bill! At the same time, Simon was able to advise on the correct management of the pool thus further improving the experience.
Teamwork from the CBBA
Jeff and Simon, both CBBA members then worked together as a team to organise the crown refurbishment, pool structural refurbishment, ballastrade painting, plant room control room refurbishment, water delivery and water balancing for a swimming pool new start up. It’s clear that using a CBBA member has huge benefits. Each member has immediate access to a huge range of experts and specialists who can work hand in hand to solve the big-picture problem, not just their part of it. The CBBA’s 1-Stop Shop solution also means less people to deal with, and peace of mind knowing that there can be no blame-game shenanigans should something need fixing.
The CBBA is the Costa Blanca’s Leading business network and should be your first port of call for a whole range of services. Visit cbba.es for an upto-date list of all our members.

What makes something Green.
As a species we are questioning what is better for our planet, what is better for nature around us and therefore we are constantly looking for ways to make the things we use as part of our lives a little greener, to help do our bit.
People class cycling as a green thing to do (which I agree with) but some of the manufacturing processes, paints, etc all used within the bike industry are probably not as cuddly and or as Eco friendly as most people would believe. And of course, the main thing is we can oversee some of this badness by a lifetime of goodness, no fumes, no noise etc so we don’t even think about the bad things that may have happened during the manufacturing process (or the failed manufacturing processes of the bikes that didn't make it). But we ignore it due to the fact that from that point forward, they do trace to nil bad things for the environment. It's the same idea behind public transport, it's not clean, it still uses fuel but at least if we are cramming it full of people it reduces the impact per capita.
So why do people think it's anything different for Artificial Grass? It is made from plastic so not a great thing, but it lasts such a long time and, when it is made with nontoxic materials, good quality grass doesn’t disintegrate (otherwise client's wouldn’t like it). So, it isn’t breaking down into the environment. It doesn’t require water and all the energy to make and supply that water (based on our area of Spain), it doesn’t require lawn mowers, or a gardener and his van, or any kind of chemicals or treatments like a natural lawn, or the vast quantities of methane and CO2 caused by the breakdown of natural grass. So how is it not like a bicycle? It may not have been conceived in the best way, but if you buy a good quality grass, then over its lifetime it will be far less harmful to the environment than natural grass. It may be hard for us to say how long our artificial grass will last, but our grass is guaranteed for 10 years and I have clients who have had it nearly 20 years and it's still going strong. Don't just make the assumption that because something has the perception of being bad for the environment that it is. Our grass products look great, last a long time and even at the end of their lives are recyclable. I'm not sure what there is left to say. Artificial grass, the bicycle of the landscaping world. Artificial Grass Spain is the Costa Blanca's leading artificial grass company - go green.

Following the successful weekend art exhibition last year, the European Union of Women Marina Alta will hold a most ambitious exhibition entitled 'Women who shaped the world', from April 19 to May 17. Right here in the Marina Alta!
Nearly 30 artists from the area have been busy creating and painting to this theme and will exhibit at the DAR Community Centre, Jesus Pobre Road, Javea. All are invited to come and see, discuss and enjoy!
Admission free, refreshments and tapas available and to make it even more of a wonderful experience, there will be workshops, discussions, presentations, concerts, arts and crafts, lectures, innovative women and oral histories - featuring women of the Marina Alta -, photographs, dance, women's associations meetings and presentations, and music recitals. The Costa Blanca Astronomical society take great pleasure in inviting you to a public talk, to be given by Professor Alan Fitzsimmons from Queens University in Belfast.
Professor Fitzsimmons is an expert in the field of asteroid and cometary science. He uses world-leading observatories to measure the physical properties of Solar System bodies and their composition.
You may remember a couple of years ago there was much speculation about the origin of an extra solar system visitor called ‘Oumuamua’. Some even speculated that it was an alien spacecraft visiting our Solar system. Professor Fitzsimmons was involved in the observation and analysis of this object as well as other interstellar visitors in the past.
His talk will tell us about these objects and is titled ‘Interstellar objects – the real Aliens’
He describes his talk as follows :- Our modern theories of planet formation imply our Milky Way should be awash with orphan comets and asteroids. Yet none had been seen in centuries of watching the skies. All this changed in 2018 and 2019, when Interstellar Objects ‘Oumuamua’ and ‘Borisov’ were discovered passing through our Solar system. This talk will give the background to the new field of investigation, how we uncovered the secrets of these messengers from afar, and how they opened up new investigations into the formation and evolution of planetary systems. We will end with looking ahead to next year, when the next great leap in our ability to find these mysterious objects will occur.
The talk will take place on Wednesday April 3rd. Location – The Casa De Cultura in Denia – Sala De Actos, first floor Time – 19:00. Everyone is welcome. The language will be English and there is no need to reserve seating. If you have any questions, please call the secretary of the group at 671 152 686.
Cancer Care Jávea are delighted to launch our JAM JAR CHALLENGE.
The plan is that you throw your shrapnel (small loose coins) into a jam jar. When it's full you can donate it to Cancer Care Jávea. We will accept this donation with gratitude. And our generous friend, let's call him Mr. Buck Penny, will MATCH the contents of your jam jar. How amazing is that? What a fun and fantastic initiative. Our charity, and its amazing team of nurses, are dependent on the kind donations of our community. Without you we could not help people who are affected by cancer. So, we thank you in advance if you'd like to participate. We have special jam jars in our Chic Boutique Jávea if you'd like to collect one. Or maybe you have one at home looking for a good cause? For more information, you can visit us in the shop or telephone us on 965 796 846. We are very excited about this and look forward to seeing a great response.

Walk Your Way Well with Niamh O'Sheehan
I simply love walking. It's my therapy session, my exercise session and my healthy lifestyle hack all rolled into one. We should ALL walk more! Why? Well, walking is often considered one of the best forms of exercise for several reasons:
1. Accessibility: Walking requires no fancy equipment or crazy training. All you need is a comfortable pair of shoes, making it accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. It can be done anywhere, at any time. Difficult to find an excuse not to really!
2. Low impact: Unlike high-intensity exercises such as running or jumping, walking is low impact and puts minimal stress on your joints. It reduces the risk of injuries and is suitable for individuals with joint pain, arthritis, or those recovering from injuries. My knees love it when I am kind to them. Yours will too.
3. Cardiovascular benefits: Walking raises your heart rate, improves blood circulation, and strengthens your heart, reducing the risk of heart diseases such as high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attacks. It helps to maintain a healthy weight and decreases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. You deserve good health. So, boot up and get cracking!
4. Mental well-being: Life isn't always a walk in the park. Excuse the pun. Walking has proven benefits for mental health. It releases endorphins, the feel-good hormones, which can improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Walking in nature or green spaces has additional psychological benefits, promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels. Another reason I walk every single day.
5. Weight management: Walking is an effective form of exercise for weight management. It helps burn calories, improve metabolism, and promote fat loss. It is a sustainable activity that can be incorporated into a daily routine for maintaining weight or losing weight gradually. Keep moving keep burning!
6. Bone and muscle health: Walking is a weight-bearing exercise that helps strengthen bones and prevent conditions like osteoporosis. It also improves muscle strength, particularly in the lower body, engaging various muscle groups and enhancing overall body stability. As we age (hey, who you calling old!) these are important considerations.
7. Longevity and well-being: Research has shown that regular walking can increase life expectancy and improve overall quality of life. It reduces the risk of chronic diseases, improves sleep and energy levels, enhances cognitive function, and boosts overall well-being. Is it the magic ingredient? Well, it is mine!
While walking is considered an excellent form of exercise, it's essential to note that the best exercise is the one you enjoy and can sustain in the long term. My choice of exercise is walking. For me is works! Want to try it? Try new routes? Meet new people? Why not join the Walk Your Way Well Community. WhatsApp me +34 676507791 for more info.
SUDOKU
Here are two Sudoku puzzles of different skill levels for you to try. It is not a math game at all - it is a pure logic game. Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 grid contains the digits 1 through to 9 with no repeats, which means that no number is repeated in any row, column or box.
Kenny Corris brings you
Aries: The New Moon Solar Eclipse gives you the chance to make a new start. You are moving on but you certainly are not running away. This could be the start of a new process that allows you to make a major life change!
Taurus: The Sun is in Taurus from the 20th of the month and you’ll get the energy you need to bring solution to just where it is needed. This powerful combination sees you unafraid to make essential progress and having your say.
Gemini: Venus is benevolent and centred this month as love and desire are important to your happiness right now. The shadow territory of Aries ensures privacy and there is a better understanding on relationship issues too.
Cancer: This could be the right time to come out of your shell and give somebody a nasty nip. Above all, keep your temper whilst others around you appear to be losing theirs for no good reason. Re- edit plans just because you can.
Leo: The Sun sees you retreating from all that you have worked on to bring harmony into a work relationship. You don’t have to keep a low profile; and why should you? A big Jupiter and Uranus tryst means that you get your rewards.
Virgo: The Full Moon in Scorpio resonates in your seventh house bringing fiery emotions as Uranus brings growth and recognition for a job done well despite all the recent set backs. Things have to get better now, and they will!
OUR OROSCOPE
Libra: As Jupiter and Uranus collude in your sibling sign of Taurus this month it’s all fair in love and war. Hold your head up and just walk away from any conflict. This is the last thing that you need right now, but the damage has been done.
Scorpio: Attention focuses on the New Moon in Scorpio towards the end of the month. Shining a light on recent events, emotions will be coming to a head whilst you get the green light on something long awaited but never forgotten.
Sagittarius: Jupiter, your planetary leader brings you good luck, great fortune and an enjoyable prosperity. An alignment with Taurus is both inspiring and liberating, and this is the right time to launch something new and wonderful.
Capricorn: The fallout from the Mercury retrograde in Aries brings you all the evidence that you need to get going. You have been putting something off but right now is the best time to face it full on. Yes, you’ll have backing!
Aquarius: Uranus, planet of innovation and technology resides over Mars in Pisces for the whole month of April. Life is taking you off in a new and exciting direction right now, though there is much still to be done. It’s liberating yet challenging!
Pisces: With Mars backing Pisces, in cahoots with Saturn, goals can be set, but make sure that nobody gets to rain on your parade. You have started and you will finish, but hard work never hurt anyone, people will never know what you don’t do!

SHOWING THE SOCIAL SIDE OF THE MOFTAG CLUB OF CALPE
Most people are aware what Moftag does in the way of fund raising for local charities with their Spring and Christmas Fayres, but there is another aspect of the club focusing on social events and assistance to their members.
Moftag began 45 years ago with the aim of bringing ladies together socially to share common interests and activities. Today we are still very much involved with our members on a social and personal basis.
Wednesday is Moftag day and every month the committee plans events starting with the General Meeting where we could have a guest speaker or enjoy a quiz or games afternoon. On the remaining Wednesdays we organise a lunch, a coffee morning, breakfast or an outing to somewhere outside of Calpe. Our members know that every Wednesday there will be an opportunity to get together with fellow members.
Many of our members are living on their own and some of them are now housebound due to ageing and illness but they remain members of Moftag and we try to offer those help and companionship wherever possible. We started a voluntary emergency list programme for those members whose families are living outside of Spain. If the families overseas cannot contact their family here for any reason they can contact us and we will go to their home and make sure everything is OK. Likewise if any of our members are hospitalised the committee arranges for visits and, support when they come home.
During Covid the social aspect became more difficult but knowing it was more important than ever for our members to have contact, the committee had a weekly roster whereby we each phoned our members for a chat and to make sure they were alright. We all found that we learned more about each other during that year than ever before!
Covid also prevented us from holding our fund raising fayre so we did a “virtual one” with on-line advertising for our home made cakes, sausage rolls, marmalades and pickles and some of the nice items from the Bric a Brac stall. We did a delivery service for those who were unable to collect items and still managed to raise a substantial amount of money!
If we have survived the political struggles during the Franco regime and the pandemic of Covid I think it is safe to say it will take a lot to keep us Moftag Ladies down!
We are always keen to have new members so please contact our president Jenny Godfrey at 639 139 518 for details of our next meeting or social event.

Jávea Feral Cat Association need more volunteers for a neutering drive
Last year, Jávea Feral Cat Association (JFCA) relied totally on donations from the public to fund neutering and help sick cats on the street, so controlling the feral population was limited. A large sum was promised but it did not materialise.
However, in January this year with the new local council the funding promised was given and awarded to Jose Luis, Veterinario Albeitar, the contract to neuter/ sterilise Jávea’s feral cats until August (unless the funding date is extended).
JFCA have a small and dedicated team of volunteers that are passionate about helping the street cats of Jávea, but they need more volunteers.
Liz Trafford, Founder and President says “whilst our fantastic team do a brilliant job and we have many colonies under control, we still have colonies that need controlling and cats that appear on the street, that are not neutered. We need more people to join us and volunteer to help with neutering, feeding and fostering.
“Since JFCA started we have neutered over 6,000 cats. But let’s look at some figures - a female and male cat that is not neutered who mate over the period of 7 years potentially can produce 420,000 cats! You will understand the population explosion we had whilst we were in confinement due to Covid and in reality, we are still catching up.”
JFCA operate a Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) policy so the breeding cycle is broken, populations are gradually reduced and the annoying behaviours of breeding cats – fighting, yowling, and spraying – stop. This ongoing care creates a better environment for both the community and the cats. Above all it is a humane and civilised way to tackle the feral cat population and one that has effectively worked all over Spain. At the start JFCA new volunteers will be accompanied by an experienced trapper.
