Specsavers Ópticas’ Summer Photography Competition offers prizes of a €100 Amazon voucher and a pair of designer sunglasses for the best photo.

On Monday the 3rd of July, Specsavers Ópticas launched a Summer Photography Competition to find an image which captures the essence of Spain. In doing so, they hope to shine a spotlight on all the wonderful aspects of Spain and find out what images encapsulate its very best elements. They are asking local residents on the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and Mallorca, to send in beautiful photographs to be in with a chance of winning a €100 Amazon voucher and a pair of designer sunglasses. Lisa James from Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar comments, “Spain is such a stunning and diverse country, with incredible natural beauty, a vibrant culture of arts, music and dance and of course incredible food. This summer we are asking keen photographers living close to our stores to show us, through an image, what makes Spain so special to them.

We are very excited to see these fantastic images and celebrate the talented photographers on the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and Mallorca, where our nine stores are located. The person who takes the best picture and best explains why this is the essence of Spain to them, will be rewarded with a €100 Amazon voucher and a pair of designer sunglasses worth up to 159€.”

The competition is open until the 1st of September and photographs can be submitted on social media by tagging @SpecsaversOpticas on Facebook and @specsaversspain on Instagram, sending photos via Messenger or via email to spain.marketing@specsavers.com

A jury formed of three Specsavers Ópticas store directors will judge the entries and shortlist the top five entries. These will then be posted on social media and the image with the most likes and comments will be declared the overall winner.

Well, thank goodness the visiting family have already done all the sightseeing they need to do on previous visits so don't want to do much more than laze around the pool. I don't think I could be bothered to trail around anywhere in this heat.

BBQ is the word of the summer with NO cooking being undertaken inside the house. It is enough to boil the kettle for a cup of tea! Keep an eye on your local information regarding fire risk levels and be careful not to fall foul of any restrictions on barbecuing if you live close to wooded areas.

Looking at the state of the reservoirs our area is not the worst off but still, if we all think and try our best to not waste it hopefully we will not have problems in the coming months. I remember whilst living on the Costa Del Sol we had no water one summer and had tankers coming round the villages bringing drinking water. Let's hope it doesn't get to that again, although in some areas of Spain they have already started restrictions.

Mainly this month enjoy yourselves, and stay cool in every sense of the word. Apart from work hours, I can be found in a pool or lazing under a brolly with a book if anyone needs me.

WHY DOES ASTRONOMY MATTER?

Recently, a friend told me that I had never talked about the most simple and basic question in astronomy, why the heck should it matter to most people? She was quite right, so I think it's time I put matters right.

If the contestants on certain television quizzes are representative of most of us, not a lot of people can name the eight planets, or know how far away the Sun or Moon are. Then there's the question that can make any astronomer scream in frustration, aren't astronomy and astrology the same thing? (Definitely not, one is science, the other is entertainment).

So, I'll try my best to say why astronomy is so important and I'll begin with the biggest thing of all. Astronomy encompasses everything that is, and has been in existence. When people look up at all the stars, planets, galaxies and everything else out there, we are trying to understand what made our Earth and everything on it. 'We are all made of star stuff'' to quote the late Carl Sagan, meaning that every kind of matter that exists including you and me was made inside stars. In case you're wondering if that's fanciful nonsense, it isn't, it's fact.

The next good reason to appreciate astronomy falls much closer to home. If you said that looking at the universe doesn't affect your life you are probably right, but that would be rather limiting. It was studying the planet Venus that first alerted us to what happens when a planet has a runaway greenhouse effect. Venus has suffered this fate, it's astonishingly hot there, not just because of the sun, but because the build up of CO2 in the atmosphere is trapping the heat. If that sounds familiar, it should do because it's what is happening to Earth at the moment, it might not effect us too much now, but what about our grandchildren?

OK, that's two big reasons why astronomy matters, one big reason and one selfish reason. Now for a third one, and perhaps the main one for people like myself who just love looking at what is out there. It's absolutely stunningly beautiful. Even some of the most beautiful things we can see on Earth are based in astronomy, a glorious sunset or a rainbow happen because of the spectrum of sunlight. In the night sky, the Moon is a lovely thing, but once you've seen it through a telescope in close up with the light glinting of mountain peaks you'll never forget it. The planet Saturn is a fantastic thing to see with the rings shining away. Seeing it for yourself rather than looking at a photograph is as different as comparing a sunset photograph with the real thing. Out of all the beauty comes a thirst for understanding what we are seeing, a longing to see and know more and sometimes a sadness that so many people are missing it all.

If someone chooses to spend a life ignoring all that, that's fine, it's a personal choice, but what a lot they are missing.

Calculating taxes in Spain is also considerably more complex than in the UK; a country which generally works on the basis of “one rule for everyone”. Comparatively, Spain's autonomous regions have the power to set their own rules, so it is not uncommon to see a difference in taxes depending on an individual's circumstances. This is especially true for Inheritance Tax, often a key consideration for overseas residents.

Skin cancer - the ABCDE rule

Do you use a skin care range to protect your skin? I have to be honest I vary rarely apply sun lotion. Yet, all I hear mainly in the salon is the increase of skin cancer, especially living here in Spain. Experts believe more than 8,000 new tumours will be diagnosed this year in Spain. A 30 per cent increase in Melanoma since 2020, this is the most common type of skin cancer. Most skin cancers arise from too much sun exposure, our natural body cannot deal with the solar radiation. The cells mutate and this when cancer is caused.

Fair skinned people are most prone to skin cancer, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway have the highest rates in Europe. Affecting people mainly as they age around 65, but melanoma is not uncommon among people as young as 30.

So, check your skin for any abnormal changes, especially in moles changing in size or colour. Interestingly, only 20 per cent of melanomas arise from existing moles. Follow the ABCDE rule; Asymmetry: a mole that is not symmetrical or oval in shape.

Border: melanomas often have jagged or irregular edges, whereas non cancerous moles have smooth and well-defined borders.

Colour: normal moles are all one colour.

Diameter: if the mole is more than 6mm in diameter, approximately the size of a pencil top, you should get it checked.

Evolution: over time your mole can change shape, colour or size. Unlike a benign mole.

Make this part of your daily routine, apply a skin protection every morning. Protect yourself whilst enjoying the sunshine. But avoid sitting in the sun during the hottest hours of the day without using an adequate sun protection. Also, don’t use out of date sun lotion. There is an expiry date on these lotions and they won’t work to their capability if out of date. You wouldn’t eat food out of date, so follow the same rule and protect yourself from these harmful rays.

Two of the best beaches in Europe are on the Costa Blanca

A beach in Jávea and another in Benitachell have been voted among the 15 finest beaches in Europe. Thousands of travellers from 83 countries took part in the bid to find the Best Beaches in Europe, drawn up by the European Best Destinations (EBD) organisation. This year’s selection has something for everyone - secluded beaches, popular spots, romantic getaways, family adventures, natural beauty or super for water sports.

Spain, with five beaches; Italy, with four; and Portugal and Greece, with two each, are the countries which come out on top of the list. Voted the most beautiful beach in Europe is Torrente de Pareis, Mallorca.

In sixth place is the stunning Cala Granadella, Jávea, which is often voted the best beach in Spain, for its glorious turquoise waters. In ninth spot is Cala Moraig, Benitachell, which is also known for its turquoise waters and is a favourite with nature lovers. The other two Spanish beaches which made the grade are Playa de Amio, Pechón, in Cantabria, which took third place for its tranquil, natural beauty, and the landmark Playa de As Catedrais (Playa de Las Catedrales) in Galicia which was voted the fifth best beach in Europe for its outstanding rock arches and caves.

Three Amata fairs in August

In August the Amata artisans association has organised two weekend fairs in the province of Alicante, while its summer fair in the port of Jávea is in full swing until 3 September. At the three fairs only Artesanía de Autor® (original arts and crafts) is sold and each stall offers something different.

Hondón de las Nieves

On Friday 11 and Saturday 12 of August they are holding a craft fair in Hondón de las Nieves, with many craft demonstrations and workshops. It will be the eighth edition of this fair, that is renown for the originality of its crafts. On Friday a juggler closes the fair with a fire show and both days a magician will walk through the fair astonishing the public with his tricks and pranks and will put on a great magic show on Saturday night, just before the famous correfocs (a parade with lots of fireworks and noise which attracts people from all over the area). The fair opens both days from 7pm until midnight or later.

San Fulgencio

The following week, on 18, 19 and 20 August, they are in the La Marina urbanisation in San Fulgencio, where thousands of people live or spend their vacation. They offer workshops for children, craft demonstrations, soap bubble shows and, of course their Arts and Crafts. The fair has a nostalgic atmosphere: all the artisans dress according to the 1920s, while The Red Velvets perform songs in the style of the mythical The Andrews Sisters and The Nest Swing invites everyone to join in their swing demonstrations. The juggler with his period characters completes the programme and closes the fair at night with a fire show. Opening times are from 6pm until midnight or later.

25th birthday

At both weekend fairs Amata celebrates its 25th anniversary with a contest of unique pieces, made by the participants and invites the public to vote for the piece they like best.

Jávea Port

It is the 10th edition of the traditional summer fair on the sea side promenade in the port of Jávea and the choice changes from one week to another as some artisans have signed up for the whole summer, where as others come only a few weeks, to have time to work in their workshops and replace the pieces they have sold. The fair opens every evening at 7:30pm.

Echo & the Bunnymen come to Valencia

Echo & the Bunnymen, the band fronted by singer Ian McCulloch, continue to celebrate their 40th anniversary with a night in Valencia on Sunday September 24 at Sala Repvblicca. Arguably one of the greatest bands to come out of Liverpool, Echo & the Bunnymen have had a string of top hits including The Cutter, The Killing Moon, Seven Seas and Nothing Lasts Forever.

This is one of only four chances to see the post-punk band in action in Spain this year. They are playing the Visor Fest festival in Murcia over the weekend of September 22 and 23, Sala La Riviera in Madrid on Tuesday September 26 and Sala Razzmatazz in Barcelona on Friday September 29. Other top bands playing this year's Visor Fest include OMD, Inspiral Carpets and Suede.

Pepelu signs for Valencia

Dénia-born player, Pepelu, is hoping to make his mark with top-flight Spanish football club Valencia CF.

Born José Luis García Vayá, the midfielder started playing in his home town before moving to the Levante UD academy and he played for their second team. He then went out on loan to two clubs in Portugal, Tondela and Vitoria Guimarães.

Returning from loan, Pepelu established himself in the Levante UD first team in the 2020/21 season and played 30 games in LaLiga. He was a key player for the club last year as the side fought for promotion from the second division. He has now moved across the city to play for Valencia CF.

He is not the only local lad to make it into the current Valencia squad. Their captain José Gayà was born in Pedreguer, just a few kilometres from Pepelu.

The 2023/24 season kicks off this month and Valencia's first game is a tough one at Sevilla on Friday August 11. Their first home game is the following weekend when they face Las Palmas.

Cantamus: The choir is looking for new members, in all voice groups, to join them. The choir sings a selection of spiritual or uplifting songs. Thank you to everyone who reads my monthly article, follows my Walk Your Way Well Facebook community, joins my events and participates in my challenges. I appreciate you all. It's turning into a long hot summer and I guess exercise has taken a back seat for many of us. And that is why I’m uber excited that on September 1st I’ll be running my 28 Day STEP Challenge again. Let’s get moving!

This is one of my absolute favourite WYWW challenges. Tell me more, you say? Well, a step challenge is simply a challenge that tracks the number of steps a person takes from walking (or running!) every day. It helps create friendly competition in an accountability group (workplace, community group or online) while also encouraging healthy living. It is a fantastic motivational means to keep us moving our bodies. Let me remind you: We love Walking! It’s free, it fits around busy schedules, you don’t need special equipment, and you can do it almost anywhere.

Even a short walk can benefit our physical and mental health. It can help to prevent a range of health conditions including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, obesity, cancer and help to improve sleep.

And the best bit: a walk can also help to clear the head. Walking has been proven to have a positive effect on our mental health, especially if we can get out into nature. Walking can increase feelings of self-esteem, improve mood, and reduce stress, anxiety and depression. A walk with colleagues, friends or family is great for our social health and connecting with other people.

And that is why I just LOVE my monthly STEP Challenge. A recent in-depth study of a university Step Count Challenge showed 93% of participants had experienced benefits. Some of the top benefits were:

Gata de Gorgos, the little village of hanging fabrics.

For the last twenty summers (with a two year absence during the pandemic), the balconies of Gata de Gorgos have been adorned with fabric canvases from around the world. The tradition has passed from generation to generation. The practise began with the display of traditional quilts, but continues not merely to maintain a tradition but as a source of inspiration to this lively, bustling town.

Art al Vent (Art in the wind), as the annual exhibition is internationally known, is more than art, it is ‘a love story for creativity’, explains Josep Ginestra, director of the event. And, he adds proudly, ‘it is the most important textile art exhibition in Spain’.

Aware of the fact that the popular habit of decorating the balconies with quilts, usually made of adamasaces or crochet, during processions was dying out, the Escola de Plastics Experimental A Vives de Gata decided to give the idea a new lease of life. It is a very old tradition, probably medieval or baroque in origin; the façades were decorated to mark either a religious or civil event.

In the context of the use of fabrics for a procession, the colour is related to the feast, if it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary the quilts will be blue, while the sacred heart red and holy week are celebrated by hand made white crochet.

The works are all the same size as traditional bedspreads. Nothing must restrict the free flapping fabrics from moving in the wind. Textile creations are prioritised. Rigid or heavy elements are excluded as Gata becomes the ‘little village of hanging fabrics’.

The works of art are a fascinating mixture of creativity and an inspiration to all who came marvel at their beauty. As every year, some of the works will hide protest messages, whilst others will only seek only to exbibit the beauty of their creation.

The route of the exhibition goes from the square to the Plaza de la Iglesia where Gata’s handicrafts shops are found. The traditional quilts are hung all along the same route as the town’s annual religious processions. For the duration of the event, Gata is more welcoming than ever, with both businesses and houses throwing their doors wide open.

In past exhibitions, works by artists from the five continents have featured in this fascinating meeting of air current and imagination. This year there will be seven international works on display alongside homegrown canvases, including works from Argentina, Chile, China, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Japan, Morocco, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. Last year, the exhibition featured a canvas made by a Russian artist and another one made by a Ukrainian. Both were exhibited on the balcony of the town hall.

Currently Art al Vent is the most important outdoor exhibition of textile creation in Spain. It is also the most international exhibition held in the Valencian Community. Art al Vent has become a unique international exhibition of textile art that fills the streets of Gata in August. This event, which attracts hundreds of visitors every year, adds to the well established, artisan tradition of Gata.

The inauguration will be on August 11 and the event lasts about 3 weeks.

Freemasons Help Autistic Children's Summer School in Jávea

On Friday 7 July, Freemasons of Arenal Deportiva Lodge No 65 which is based in Jávea, were delighted to help with the funding of the annual summer school for Autistic needs children from the local area.

Worshipful Brother Peter Johnson, who is the current Master of the lodge, with lodge members and their partners, along with representatives from Todas Juntas Jávea, Jean Halse and Marion Kenworthy, were delighted to meet Reuben, the Director of Asociación Autismo of Jávea, to present a cheque for 1000€ which will help fund the summer school this year.

Reuben was delighted to receive the donation and explained that the summer school could now afford another teacher, who is very much needed, as the summer school accommodates over 40 children on a daily basis from many different nationalities over the summer months.

These children, who are from the Jávea area and are aged between 3 to 18 years, benefit from one on one and group therapy at the school, as well as having lots of fun and playtime, splashing around in the temporary pools and playing on the garden swings and equipment in the summer sunshine.

The funds were raised by Arenal Deportiva lodge on an initiative from the ladies who suggested they hold a 1920s themed dinner dance to support this very worthy cause.

U3A Marina Baixa forthcoming events

Many of the groups offered to members of U3A Marina Baixa are taking a break during August but new members are always welcome and there is a full calendar of events planned for the autumn and winter so why not go along to find out more at the first meeting after the summer on Monday 25 September at 11am in the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi. Membership is only 10€ for the year and will enable you to take advantage of the numerous activities and events planned for the autumn. On Saturday 23 September there will be a trip to Jalon Valley Market with lunch in Alcalalí, on Friday 20 October a visit to the Marq museum, Alicante to see the Chinese Terracotta Warriors and looking further ahead there will be a 5 days, 4 nights Christmas trip to Roquetas de Mar in Almeria. U3A Dining Out group get into swing at golf club

More than 90 members of Jávea U3A’s Dining Out group enjoyed a get-together with a difference at a Summer Party on the terrace at the golf club.

Group leaders Linda Coughlin and Alan Guest turned the usual monthly event into an occasion to remember – with a special tapas meal and dancing under the stars with music and entertainment provided by the popular James Hurst.

It was great to see everyone enjoying the party and dancing the night away. Well done again to Linda and Alan (pictured here with James Hurst) for organising yet another successful event.

Members of U3A Moraira Teulada Ladies Let’s Do Lunch group gathered for their last lunch before the summer break at Chic Gastronomic in Moraira. Pick n Mix

Once again, the residents of the Benimeli Club

Residential were seen dancing and singing along with the Pick n Mix group of musicians recently.

Pick n Mix members are made up from the U3A Denia guitar group and the Jukes of El Verger, the El Verger ukulele group.

They perform at many local residential establishments and local charity events, and play a large variety of music from the 1960s and even perform some of the Spanish classics.

Music is by far the best medicine is proving to be a very profound statement, with the musicians seeing many examples where an audience member, who despite suffering with some form of memory loss or reduction in communication skills, suddenly recognises a favourite tune and comes alive with the memories it creates.

It is what makes music such a worthwhile past time for members of Pick n Mix.
