Have you had one of these at the bottom of your pool?
The large black spiders are back in the pools. Pleasingly this type of arachnid is harmless and only appears in the summer season, but it certainly can put the shivers into those with arachnophobia!
They are especially found in countryside houses where because of the summer heat they come out of hiding and go looking for sources of water. Hence why many are found in swimming pools, usually at the bottom, appearing to be still and lifeless.
But in fact they are not always dead; sometimes if you lift one out, and put it onto the ground to ‘dry out’ you may find that a couple of hours later he or she may have wandered off!
Although these spiders are part of the tarantula family, they are not dangerous. Yes they can give a sharp bite with their chelicerae (their mouthpart structure, rather like teeth) if they are surprised or bothered, and the bite will likely be annoying and possibly cause some inflammation.
However, despite their rather menacing black and hairy appearance, and being a bit of a pain because they occasionally need to be fished out of the pool, they are actually quite useful in houses because of their diet of insects and mites.
To put your mind at ease even more, in Spain there are more than 1,700 species of spider, of which only 4 are even potentially dangerous to humans. These are The Black Widow spider, the Mediterranean Tarantula, the Brown Recluse spider and the Mediterranean Funnel Web spider. These can all deliver a nasty bite, but none of them are fatal to humans.
So here at Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea we are not really expecting to receive any calls about anyone needing emergency care due to spider bites.
But we are here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year for any other serious medical emergencies. We operate a fleet of ambulances akin to mobile intensive care units throughout most of Costa Blanca North, including most of the inland areas. Accidents and emergencies do happen, and you never know when you may need our ambulance services, whether at home, or away from home. Membership is just €60 for a whole year for the whole family. The Best of Jennifer Cunningham
Original Article from February 2023
What makes Jennifer Cunningham Insurances so different?
A good question and I can offer you a number of answers.
I started my company nearly 30 years ago, working from home and developing the business slowly over a number of years. Once established, I employed staff and rented a large office in Jávea port, where I am still to this day. How life has changed for me, and for the better.
I realised when I moved to Spain, that there was very little help available and what was available was normally in Spanish. There was no private health insurance, no funeral plans and no insurance dedicated to the Expat, and little customer service.
I started the business selling health insurance for a British company, along with funeral plans. Having lost my husband in Spain, I realised how difficult it was to arrange a funeral and the costs were enormous. Being very disciplined myself (probably due to my time in the Air Force), I have a strong work ethic. I used to work from home during the day, and I would go out early evenings making home visits until I was busy enough to take someone on to help me. From those early days when I worked tirelessly, I built my company and now have 7 offices. I demand from my excellent and loyal staff that they treat all my clients with respect, courtesy and honesty and offer them the best service that is possible.
I pride myself that the after sales service is the best, a service very rare in Spain. I have a Claims Administrator and a dedicated Renewal department, who will make sure that as your circumstances change, your policies can change with you and you fully aware of your coverage.
So these are just some of the reasons why we are so special. We are more than just a voice on the phone, offering good, old fashioned service. Not always the cheapest, but the best, working with Liberty Seguros and ASSSA healthcare, who both provide special Expat policies and are the best in the market.
Mark, Jennifer’s son, will be taking on the company to continue with Jennifer’s ethos of customer service and information and this is one of the previous articles from Jennifer that is still relevant today. The only difference is Liberty Seguros has now merged with Generali Seguros, although the policies remain the same. For more information or a quotation, please call one of my offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.
Well Amsterdam and PINK did not disappoint. Our hotel was near the stadium so we bought travel tickets which lasted for the 3 days we were there. What a fantastic system where we could hop on and off buses and trains to get about the city. Everyone was so helpful, making sure we got on the right route when we were unsure. We packed a lot into the time we were there and visited places I wouldn't normally have considered, as it was more about my 9 year old granddaughter, but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed all her choices and had a great time. Of course the highlight was PINK whose concert coincided with the England Holland game. So many people were watching their phones with one eye and the stadium was an orange / pink mix. The Script and Gayle were also performing as well as a DJ who read the crowd perfectly. It was amazing and so much more. As soon as we went into the stadium all the people in front of us parted to let gorgeous granddaughter through and got her to the front - we were able to see her but honestly it would not have mattered as the people round her danced and sang with her and PINK smiled at her.
The holiday was finished on another high note when she was invited into the cockpit of the plane by the Spanish pilots and shown some of the controls.
Fabulous memories were made for the three of us. Until next time, take care and be kind.

The Best Time to See a Doctor is When You’re Well
It is often said that prevention is better than cure. At Clinica Britannia, under the leadership of Dr Mera, we now specialise in Genomics for the early detection of cancer (and other diseases) –often way before symptoms appear. It has become a valuable tool in saving lives and in the case of genetically inherent cancer, put your mind at ease. Genomics works by analysing the genetic material of cells to identify mutations and alterations that may indicate the presence of cancerous cells. By sequencing the DNA of individuals, scientists can detect specific genetic markers associated with various types of cancer. This allows for the identification of cancer at a much earlier stage, often before symptoms appear, which significantly improves the chances of successful treatment.
One of the key techniques used in genomic cancer detection is liquid biopsy. This non-invasive method involves analysing circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) found in blood samples. Liquid biopsies can detect genetic mutations and alterations associated with cancer, providing a real-time snapshot of the genetic landscape of a tumour. This enables early intervention and monitoring of treatment response.
Additionally, genomics can help identify individuals at higher risk of developing cancer due to inherited genetic mutations. By understanding these genetic predispositions, healthcare providers can implement personalised screening programs and preventive measures tailored to each individual's risk profile. This proactive approach not only aids in early detection but also in reducing the overall incidence of cancer.
At Clinica Britannia, we can now offer tests which can give you a head start on cancer (as well as other health risk areas such as dementia, diabetes and heart disease). Our preventative and holistic medicine approach and belief that the best time to see a doctor is when you’re well, means we can recommend simple lifestyle changes to reduce risk and promote a healthier individual.

AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS
What have they achieved for science?
We all know what an amateur astronomer is, a lover of everything out there in the universe. However for most people the daily work of a professional astronomer is a mystery and one that I'm saving for another time. What is easy to define is who was the first British professional astronomer, other countries are quite different. After King Charles II was restored to the throne, one of the many innovations he created was the post of 'King's obversator' later to become astronomer royal, the first being a great man called John Flamstead, a fascinating and very clever chap. The King hadn't suddenly become curious about the night sky, but he was very keen to improve British trade and that needed better navigation which in turn needed better star maps, and so the story began.
In our modern world we know a great deal about the universe but it's also clear that there is a vast amount still to learn, so what can today's amateur possibly contribute? Firstly, comets, in the short time I've lived in Spain, nearly 300 comets were found by amateurs, that's nearly half the total. If you discover one, it'll be named after you, and your namesake might soar through the heavens until the end of time.
Now for a few quick but important contributions. Patrick Moore made moon maps the helped NASA with the first Moon landings. More recently an Australian amateur discovered an anomaly on Jupiter after something big hit the planet. The planet Uranus was discovered by an amateur, The comet Shoemaker Levy smashing into Jupiter was another amateur discovery, this planetary collision kicked off the whole Spacewatch program that is mapping the movements of anything that threatens our Earth - rather important that is!
I could go on and on, but that would be boring, to know more you can use the internet. What might interest you more is what you and I can contribute, and you don't even need a telescope, just a computer. European citizen science is a catch all term that includes some great astronomy projects such as searching for black holes, near Earth objects, asteroid hunting and much more. All you need to join these projects is as little or much time as you want, and a computer or smartphone. You don't need qualifications or to be super smart, just an interest.
I would recommend looking at a website called SKAO, just Google it. It lets you use the time when your computer is idle to analyse signals collected by radio telescopes. You can look for supernova, or pulsars and much more.
That's all for this month, I'll finish by mentioning that the nova we are expecting in Coronae Borealis hasn't gone off yet, and I must add that after seeing my crack about the flat Earth society last month, my son pointed out that when the society first started, they advertised that they had members all over the globe. 'Nuf said.

Wonky Teeth?
Is it okay to have crooked teeth?
Well, there's nothing “wrong” about a crooked smile, but studies have shown that having a beautiful smile will boost self confidence and self-image, and in this day and age that’s good to have…. this is true for children, teens and adults. But crooked teeth can cause significant oral health issues, primarily because they're harder to clean effectively, poor oral hygiene often leads to tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath.
A nice smile, after all, beats other great features. As a dentist we see a huge increase in people wishing to improve their smiles for this reason.
The history….Modern diets are in general depleted in vitamins and minerals, and in especially low in vitamin D3 and K2. This causes reduced jaw development right from conception and in the growing foetus leading to crooked teeth and undeveloped faces. Correct jaw development means wide symmetrical jaws and plenty of room for teeth to erupt in optimal alignment. Before the modern age we spent far more time in the great outdoors, in the field hunting and growing real food in the sunshine, this means we used to have far more vitamin D from food free of preservatives, and sunshine on our skin which in turn produced more ideal jaws and faces.
Options for straightening your teeth
• Fixed bracket appliances
These are made up of metal brackets that are attached to the teeth with flexible wire and bands. The attached wire slowly aligns the teeth. Metal braces are more affordable to use compared to other types of braces and excellent in their effects. Ceramic fixed appliances may be less noticeable, but they are more expensive than metal braces and they have various disadvantages and so are as such inferior to the metal brackets.
• Invisible aligners
Invisible braces are clear plastic aligners made by digital planning. This type of braces are more comfortable than traditional brace and removed for meals. The aligner is replaced every 7-10 days. This type may not be recommended to correct severely misaligned teeth.
• Cosmetic dentistry
Cosmetic techniques can be used to straighten teeth in certain cases. By using veneers, crowns or composite bonding the teeth can be enhanced and made to look aligned without actually moving them. If favourable then of course this is a much quicker treatment.

Septic Tank Regulation in Costa Blanca
A septic tank is a crucial component of a wastewater treatment system typically used in areas without centralised sewer systems. It is an underground chamber made of concrete, fiberglass, or plastic, designed to treat wastewater from household plumbing produced by bathrooms, kitchen drains, and laundry.
There are various types of septic tanks, with many town halls currently mandating the use of sealed models. However, regulations differ between municipalities, making it crucial to understand the specific requirements in each area.
The Valencian Community's approach involves a blend of European, national, and regional regulations, with specific local ordinances tailored to address unique challenges in municipalities like Denia, Jávea, and Oliva. This multi-level regulatory framework aims to mitigate the adverse effects of septic tanks, promoting a transition towards more sustainable and safe wastewater management systems.
Issues and Challenges
Septic tanks pose significant environmental and public health risks due to potential leaks and contamination. The challenges in the Valencian Community include:
• Ensuring compliance with regulations across diverse municipalities.
• The financial burden on property owners for sewer connections or septic tank maintenance.
• Managing older septic systems that may not meet current standards, leading to long-term environmental hazards.
• Coordinating regional and local efforts to upgrade
infrastructure and enforce regulations effectively.
Local Regulations (Denia, Jávea and Oliva)
Some of the municipalities we deal with on a daily basis include Denia, Jávea and Oliva. Due to the remote locations of many homes in these areas, far from the main sewer network, many properties need septic tanks to store waste. However, each municipality has its own regulations and requirements regarding whether homeowners must connect to the main network or use a specific type of septic tank.
Denia
As per the Municipal Ordinances on Sewerage and Discharges and on Waste Disposal and Lot Maintenance, from March 9, 2022, it is mandatory for residents to connect their homes to the sewer network and deactivate septic tanks. Non-compliance results in fines and higher costs for emptying septic tanks.
Jávea
According to the Sanitation and Wastewater Discharge Regulations, properties within 100 metres of the municipal sewer network must connect to it. If over 100 metres, alternative solutions like sealed tanks are allowed temporarily. Costs for network extension or connection shall be borne by property owners.
Installation of sealed tanks requires specific documentation and compliance with detailed technical specifications. For this reason, we recommend you arrange this with a qualified professional.
Oliva
The Sewerage Ordinance’s aim is to protect the environment and public health by regulating discharges into the municipal sewer system.
Most rural and interior urbanisations rely on cesspools or septic tanks, with the main sewer network serving the urban and coastal areas.
Disposing of Septic Tank Waste
Finally, once your septic tank is installed following the current
regulation of the corresponding municipality, you will have to hire a professional service specialising in septic tank cleaning. We recommend that you contact a company specialised in cleaning and emptying septic tanks. These professionals have the appropriate equipment and comply with environmental regulations.
The waste disposal process will entail the following actions.
• Preparing access: Ensure that access to the septic tank is clear and accessible for the vacuum truck.
• Preliminary inspection: Before starting the emptying process, professionals will inspect the septic tank to determine the level of waste and assess its condition.
• Emptying and cleaning: Using a suction hose connected to the vacuum truck, liquid and solid waste will be extracted from the septic tank. The process may involve using high-pressure water to clean the internal walls of the tank.
• Proper disposal: The extracted waste will be transported and disposed of at a wastewater treatment plant in accordance with environmental regulations.
• Final inspection: After emptying, a final inspection is conducted to ensure that the septic tank is completely empty and in good condition.
It is important to schedule regular septic tank emptying, typically every 3 to 5 years, depending on the size of the tank and its usage, to prevent overflow problems and maintain the system's proper functioning.
Considerations When Buying a Property
When buying a property, it is important to ask the seller or real estate agent if there is a septic tank. If the answer is affirmative and there is a septic tank, your lawyer can then investigate when it was last emptied and when it was installed, and whether it complies with the current local regulations. It is crucial to verify if a new septic tank is required, as the costs for installing a new one, if not covered by the seller, will have to be borne by the new owner at a later stage.
Additionally, regardless of its compliance with local regulations, a specialist should assess the maintenance status of the septic tank to determine if any repairs or emptying are needed before the property is transferred.
What Happens If I Don’t Know Where the Septic Tank
Is?
In such a case, it will be necessary to hire a professional who, using specific tools and mechanisms, can locate the septic tank. It is essential to identify its location since proper maintenance is fundamental to avoiding medium- and long-term problems.
Conclusion
Septic tanks are a common solution in certain areas of the Costa Blanca without access to centralised sewer systems, but it is crucial to follow local regulations to ensure the protection of the environment and public health. Always consult with professionals and local authorities to ensure compliance with current regulations.

The summer fair in the Port of Xàbia: quite something special
If you think that all beach fairs are the same, you have not seen what the artisans in the Port of Jávea offer. What makes that fair so special is, that at each stall there is an real artisan who only sells pieces made by him or herself. In this way Amata, the artisan association that organises the fair, guarantees that you can find only original quality products. What better souvenir can you take home from your holidays than something, that you bought directly from the artisan who made it?
Until the 1st of September you can find them every evening on the port's Promenade, where they offer, in up to 20 stalls, ceramics, pyrography, jewellery of their own design in silver, macramé, aluminium or wood, crochet work, fountains in artificial stone, gnomes and witches, papier-mâché figures, bowls and clocks made of wood with resin, funny cards and paintings made with pebbles from the beach, even watercolours and paintings. And since they are all true artisans, they can personalise their products, adapt them to your preference or take special orders.
The participants change from week to week; every Monday photos of the stalls expected that week will be published at https://www.puebloartesano.es/javea. And for the latest news about the fair, special performances or possible changes in the opening times you can visit https://www.facebook.com/feriaartesaniajavea/.
The fair is one more reason to visit the port of Xàbia, which already has so much to offer: the port itself with its fish market, the modernist church of the Virgin de Loreto in the shape of a ship, shops and plenty of terraces to have a drink, lunch or dinner on the seashore. You can get to the fair on the tourist train that runs between Arenal Beach in Jávea and the old town, passing through the port: the stop is next to the fair. Come to the fair and see the difference!

AP7 road is toll free for the summer
One of the most expensive tolls in Spain will disappear for the busy summer months to help ease traffic congestion around Alicante city. The AP7 Alicante ring road between Monforte del Cid and El Campello is toll free until October 15 in a bid to encourage drivers to use this road instead of the A70.
An average of between 80,000 and 95,000 vehicles a day use the A70 while only around 5,000 motorists use this paid-for stretch of the AP7.
A series of improvements to the A70 could also be in the pipeline, including expanding its capacity and upgrading links of the A70 with the A31 (Las Atalayas) and the A77a, which is the access road to the university of Alicante. However, the news has not gone down so well further down the coast in Orihuela and Murcia, whose councils have been campaigning for years for their stretch of the AP7, particularly the section between Los Montesinos and Villamartín-La Zenia, to be free of charge. For instance, Zenia Boulevard shopping centre attracts around 15 million visitors a year and many avoid the seven-kilometre stretch of the AP7, which has tolls, and use the already-congested N332 instead.
Don’t Let Your Aircon Get You Hot an Bothered K&M will help you keep (your) cool!
Living in Spain, where summer temperatures can soar, it's crucial to ensure your air-conditioning system is in top shape before the heat hits. Too many people learn this the hard way when they turn on their air conditioner for the first time this year, only to find it wasn't working. The discomfort of a hot, stuffy home should make them realise the importance of regular maintenance. Getting your air-conditioning system checked before the peak of summer can prevent unexpected breakdowns and ensure efficient cooling. Regular maintenance helps identify and fix minor issues before they become major problems, saving you from costly repairs and unbearable heat. It also improves the system's efficiency, reducing energy consumption and lowering your electricity bills.
At K&M, we specialise in the installation, repair and maintenance of air-conditioning systems with a range of solutions to suit all dwellings, from a small apartment to a 6 bedroomed finca!
If you find yourself in a situation like many, where your air conditioner fails just when you need it most, contact a reliable service provider like K&M. They offer professional maintenance and repair services to get your system up and running quickly. As you can imagine they’re getting quite busy now, so call immediately to get scheduled in!
It’s also highly recommended to get added to their database so that next year they can send you an early maintenance reminder so you’ll never have to worry about the air turning blue instead of becoming cool when you start your airconditioning for the first time next summer.
K&M cover the whole of the north Costa Blanca so whether it’s a repair, maintenance or a whole new system, call then on 965 874 838.

Dean Richardson started his entertainment journey after leaving university and applying to be on the prime-time TV series ‘Star For A Night’ hosted by Jane McDonald and being selected from thousands of applicants to be one of five chosen to appear on the live shows.
Dean caught the attention of Trevor Chance - a tribute impresario – and was invited to headline his show 'Legends' on the Central Pier as Freddie Mercury.
Dean’s career has taken him far and wide and he says his biggest moment was probably performing at Maspalomas Pride in Gran Canaria in front of 30,000 which he says was “spectacular” but he mostly feels privileged to be able perform his hero’s music.
Dean tells a lovely story of being at Legends in Blackpool: “We had an opening night party after my very first show in the green room and a few other local acts that we know came to join. One of them came up to me said how great I was but I have to ask you, how do you sing with those teeth in? I replied 'they're my teeth!' This guy has known me for over ten years! I get this a lot; they really are my teeth”.
The rest of Dean’s Backstage Interview can be read online at www.Costa Blanca.Events where he does talk about doing an accidental roly poly off the stage! Dean is coy about the famous people he has performed with but it’s clearly been a successful career.

Consultation of a hairdresser
‘Where are you off to love’?
Article supplied by MimisKru
‘MimisKru dear,’ Jane shouted whilst leaving their home in Jávea, with clenched teeth. God, he’s only been home 2 weeks and already she felt a divorce coming! Or death? Plant him under the patio came to mind with Cecil her deceased hamster. Only a 5 minute walk to the salon where she could escape and enjoy her pamper or therapy session with Julie her hair stylist. She had a picture clenched in her hand of the new look she wanted. ‘Hi Julie,”
‘Hi Jane, how’s it going’?
‘Don’t ask hon.’
‘Oh dear, let’s get you seated and a coffee.’ This is just what Jane needed, someone she could communicate with and also receive a decent hair cut. Julie always listened and gave great advice, as did all the girls. Jo Black the salon owner wouldn’t have it any other way. She would tell her staff, ‘Good communication results in a happy client.’ Oh and ‘following instructions, giving the client exactly what they want.’ Jane often heard her say this especially when training new staff.
Jane had been a client of MimisKru now for 4 years, previously she went to Kru and Jo did her hair there, before the 2 salons joined together. She had tried all the stylists out and was happy with them all.
‘So, let’s take a look at your pic hon,’ Jane passed it over to Julie.
‘Short?’
‘Yep’
‘Do we want to talk about it?’
‘No, just cut it all off Julie, just like the pic.’
‘Do you want a brandy with that coffee’? Julie looked concerned, Jane had long hair and wanted a pixy cut.
‘Trust me Julie I’ve had it before and now Spencer is retired and home full time, I fancy a change. Just like he did, taking early retirement.’
So, Julie could see where this was going.
‘Ok, you’re 100 per cent sure’?
‘Definitely.’ So, Julie cut all Jane’s hair off, it was a desperate decision, but a good one. Not quite as short as the pic. Julie had suggested a slightly longer feathered fringe which looked softer for Jane's age. As Julie sprayed her fingers with hair spray and pulled sections of hair out giving a textured look to the cut.
‘Oh Julie, it looks amazing,’ Jane was delighted with her new look.
‘I hope Spencer likes it.’
‘I don’t care, I do.’ Jane winked, paid and then left.
Eventually Jane was home, she walked through the door, there was Spencer waiting.
‘Wow,’ he said, in surprise. ‘You look amazing. I think I need to visit MimisKru. Do they do men’s hair?’
‘Well yes.’ Jane answered, it was the first time Spencer had complimented Jane in years.
She now knew she was going to get some fun later, and all she could think about was messing up her hair.

Summer Time
I have just caught myself looking at a couple of old photos that I have in my office and it reminded me that this coming year will be my 25th year as an industry garden designer. It will be a very proud achievement in my life and it will also mark the 32nd year in my life involved with landscaping and building work.
As a Garden Designer it has always been my pleasure to create spaces that clients couldn’t even dream about, and sometimes it's the detailed things that I see that really makes the difference. My skill of being able to determine levels and spaces within a garden which do not exist at the point I originally see the space, and being able to create those for clients is very fulfilling. It's when those spaces and levels become defined that a garden space really comes to life, it's one of the most exciting points within the construction of a garden. It's the first time that the proverbial flesh starts to be added to the bones and gives the client a real tangible understanding of the space created.
This next year will also mark our 20th year of installing artificial grass.
I sometimes think that as a garden designer when I suggest artificial grass to some clients they think it makes me look incompetent, but it’s quite the opposite. As a designer that has been involved in the industry for nearly a quarter century and most of that time in Spain, dealing with scores of clients each year helps make you understand a market, what people want, need and are prepared to pay for. So, as someone who also knows gardens, it's just common sense. It’s as simple as that. Plain, simple, good advice. I have always told my clients the truth even when it's not what they want to hear. And the truth is, that for approx. 98% of all my clients artificial grass is the correct material to use, in the sense that: it's just as cheap to install at inception (providing you are prepping, irrigating and supplying the correct materials and products for a natural lawn), it is instant, it looks great for decades especially with some very basic care and it doesn’t cost the client a penny from the moment it's laid. What isn’t common sense about that.
As a pragmatist, as a designer and as a landscaper, artificial grass is and should be your only consideration if you want a beautiful all year round, maintenance free green lawn space in Spain, especially when set into a beautiful garden that still provides shelter and plants for nature and local wildlife to thrive in.

The TheatreSong Collective made their debut performance on Thursday 27th June at the Ondara Theatre with a concert called "Broadway Chronicles".
On its way to New York, inspired by Women of the Marina Alta!
They sang their way through a whistlestop tour of musical theatre. The oldest numbers were from the Beggars Opera dating from the 18th Century through to Edges from the 21st Century. There were many audience favourites including the Sound Of Music, Kiss Me Kate, Starlight Express, Miss Saigon, and too many more to list. Three of the cast performed a homage to Andrew Lloyd Webber by singing three of his most famous love songs from Tell Me On A Sunday, Aspects of Love and Jesus Christ Superstar and then mixing all three together into a showstopping mashup.
Although each member of the choir had chosen their own outfits, so they could express their individual personalities, everybody was dressed in black and white, and the stage was also dressed in black and white. The effect was quite stunning especially when the whites of the backdrop and outfits picked up the colours from the lighting that set the mood for each song. TheatreSong Collective will be putting on concerts dedicated to musical theatre and musical films and the choir are now inviting new members to join them. You do not have to read music to sing with them and they are looking for both experienced singers and first time singers looking to try something new. Over the summer months Philip Ashley, the musical director, will be running "Sing For Fun" workshops that will involve singing musical theatre so you can find out if you enjoy it and would like to join TheatreSong for their next concert. What is two-factor authentication and why is it used?
Two-factor authentication (2FA), sometimes referred to as twostep verification or dual-factor authentication, is a security process in which users provide two different authentication factors to verify themselves. Two-factor authentication adds an additional layer of security to the authentication process by making it harder for attackers to gain access to a person's devices or online accounts because, even if the victim's password is hacked, a password alone is not enough to pass the authentication check. If you are not sure how to set up a double verification, you can always give us a call, we are here happy to help. Until next month, your PC-HIGHWAY TECH TEAM
Inspired by the many art contributions, in the 'Women who shaped the World' art exhibition, Emma Lawton (curator and artist) was motivated to paint a portrait of American activist Eve Ensler. Eve, a Tony Awardwinning playwright, performer, and author of the Obie award-winning theatrical phenomenon, wrote The Vagina Monologues, published in over 48 languages, performed in over 140 countries, and heralded by The New York Times as one of the “best American plays”. Emma's painting, when posted on Instagram, brought a totally surprising result in the personal response by Eve herself (now called V), hence the portrait is on its way to New York! It may be auctioned in accordance with appropriate causes, or find another destination to be determined by V herself. The European Union of Women, Marina Alta is committed to supporting the growth and development of its members. So, at a committee meeting, when the existence of the film 'City of Joy' about V's work in the Democratic Republic of Congo was known, it was decided go ahead with the recent tapas and 'All about Eve' event. The film was harsh and illuminating to watch, however the event was also an opportunity to see in action, professional skills, humility, empathy and support, from Emma Lawton, EUWMA members and visiting guests. Find out about us, or become a member? Find us on Facebook European Union of Women Marina Alta. Call or message us on WhatsApp on 658 530 138 or an email euwmarinaalta@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you!

From classical pieces to songs from the shows, modern music to film themes. Go to our website "The English Choir Teulada" for more details.
We are extremely fortunate to sing in churches and cultural centres, as well as restaurants and bars. Moraira church is a regular venue where we participate in the Moors and Christians Fiesta. Our Christmas singa-long at Saxos is always well received.

Walk Your Way Well
with Niamh O'Sheehan
I will be the first to admit that I'm somewhat dependent on my phone and all it's blingy gadgetry. My calendar, my alarms, my camera, my notes, my communication tools, and that bottomless pit called "social media" keep me glued to my device in every spare moment I have. Words like “digital platforms,” “online networking,” or “web-based social networks” are commonplace in our vocabulary now. This is where we work, hang out and connect with people. But there's one time I seem to be able to disconnect from my phone. And that is when I'm connecting with nature. Thankfully nature is a more powerful drug!
My ADHD needs open spaces and digital downtime. The "attention restoration theory" suggests nature allows us to recover from mental fatigue and overstimulation. In short, my brain cogs whir at high speed and one way to decelerate my mind is to put my phone, and all its distractions, away while I hit the hills. My attention fatigue quickly lessens and creativity and focus heighten. And that is one of the reasons why I try very hard to get the balance right between outdoors and online. In today's digital age, the contrast between spending time in nature and spending time on phones has become stark and significant. Immersing oneself in nature offers a myriad of benefits that technology simply cannot replicate. The tranquillity of a forest, the rhythmic sound of waves crashing on a shore, or the fresh scent of blooming flowers engages all our senses, promoting mental clarity and reducing stress. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can lower blood pressure, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being. The physical activity associated with outdoor activities like hiking, walking, or gardening also contributes to better physical health.
Conversely, spending excessive time on phones can have detrimental effects. While smartphones are invaluable tools for communication, information, and entertainment, they often lead to a sedentary lifestyle. Prolonged screen time is associated with eye strain, poor posture, and disrupted sleep patterns. Furthermore, the constant bombardment of notifications and the allure of social media can lead to increased anxiety.
Balancing technology use with time spent outdoors is crucial. Nature provides a necessary escape from the digital world, allowing individuals to unplug and reconnect with themselves and their surroundings. Simple activities like a walk in the park, a picnic by the lake, or even tending to a home garden can foster a deeper connection to the natural world and provide a refreshing break from screens. Leave the camera at home and just be present. Make it all about YOU and not a photo opportunity.
In essence, while technology has its place in modern life, the timeless benefits of nature should not be overlooked. On the contrary, nature should be a priority. Give yourself a healthier, more balanced lifestyle, enriching both mind and body by unplugging regularly. If you are struggling with device addiction (yes, it's a real thing!) you can drop me a line and we can discuss implementing some boundaries that can help. As a positive psychology coach, I have some tools up my sleeve that can help. Email me at niamh@walkyourwaywell.com.
Fanning the soaring temperatures
By Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.com
As the Summer heat intensifies on the Costa Blanca, the numbers of women using traditional fans increases. Old women, young women even children and the occasional man can be seen, making the most of this time-honoured aid to keeping cool.
While Spain enjoys strong links with the fan, historians generally agree that they originated in Asia, likely in China at around 2000 BC. They were also found in India, where the earliest examples were made of palm leaves, and in Persia, where impressive ostrich feather fans were prominent.
The Portuguese dominated early trade with Asia, and as a result, the folding fan arrived in Europe during the 15th century. Japan is credited with the invention of the “sensu” folding fan, which is made up of two primary parts, the stick – composed of a varying number of ‘blades’ and the mount, a mechanism inspired by bat wings.
By the 16th century, the fan had gained popularity in courts across Europe, including Spain, Italy, England and France.
In England, fans were an adornment of female dress during Henry VIII’s reign, and Queen Elizabeth I frequently styled herself with a fan.
The folding fan is known in Spanish as “abanico.” As the accessory gained popularity in Europe, ‘abanico’ craftsmanship emerged, reaching its pinnacle during the 17th century, when renowned painters were hired to decorate fans for the nobility.
The famous 17th-century painting by Diego Velazquez, La dama del abanico, demonstrates the emerging centrality of the fan in Spanish culture. In 1797, the Real Fábrica de Abanicos (Royal Fan Factory) was established and produced a wide variety of fans, extending their usage to all social classes, ages, and genders, and to occasions ranging from parties to mourning to daily life. Other factories, such as the famous Casa de Dieg, which opened in 1823 in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol is still in operation today.
As Spanish manufacturers of fans began to take hold, so did the country’s tourism industry. After Napoleon’s attempts to capture Spain failed, the country became a popular destination for countless rugged adventurers. During this boom, Spanish culture became an exportable commodity. Washington Irving’s Tales of the Alhambra, published in 1832, was widely circulated in Europe and beyond. A romanticised version of the country appeared in the popular opera Carmen, which portrays a love triangle anchored by a Spanish gypsy in the title role. This also led to the popularity of Flamenco dances, where the use of fans plays a major part. The dancers use a slightly larger fan, called “pericon” to give a greater sensual and spellbinding effect to the dance.
Spot the 13 differences (answers in the back pages)
Despite its historic importance, the real reason behind the popularity of the hand-held fan then, and now, is that in the heat, its use actually helps to increase airflow and the evaporation of sweat on the skin. For this reason alone it is certain will we see its continued use in Spain. Ladies throughout the 19th and 20th centuries used fans to communicate in secret: to declare love, for example, as females were not permitted to speak their minds until well into the 1970s.
Here are some of the more well-known gestures:
• To fan quickly: intense romantic interest
• To fan slowly: already married, or uninterested quickly meant the woman was either engaged or has a love interest
• To close slowly: this would mean a “yes”
• To close quickly: a clear “no”
The language of the beautiful and traditional Spanish fan is just one of many secret languages invented over time to communicate efficiently without being vocal or overt.
While in some countries the fan may be seen as an antiquated artefact, it is still a major part of the Spanish culture – both for practical reasons and as a subtle method of communication and is likely to remain so for some time to come.

A reputation that stands the test of time
And some very lovely bathrooms
We had our first contact with the Showerman almost 20 years ago when we needed a simple bath screen. The business “Showerman” was originally the very amenable Don, ably assisted by his lovely wife Alexandra. Often seen driving up and down the Costa Blanca, Don and Alexandra were the go-to team for all things shower or bath screen related.
Now Don has earned his retirement but the ever-youthful Alexandra has carried on with the business with a great team and have expanded into offering complete bathroom reforms as well as still being the go-to suppliers of all types of bathroom screens.
Well, over the years we’ve recommended their work to friends and colleagues and everyone, and I mean everyone, has been completely satisfied. It’s sometimes worrying to be asked to recommend a business, but that is not the case with Alexandra and her team.
In fact 20 years after having our first screen installed we had our main home bathroom reformed and we’re absolutely delighted. The professionalism and quality of work is outstanding, and alongside the friendly and respectful workers means they are a pleasure to have in your home.
And we’re not the only ones, time after time Showerman is being invited back years after their original visit to complete 2nd or 3rd bathrooms or to renew the original work even 30 years later. They really are the best choice for bathroom reforms.
Find Alexandra at the Showerman Showroom in Jávea Thiviers area Mondays to Thursday from 10am to 1pm. You will not be disappointed.

Why Joining a Chamber Choir Could Be Your Best Decision Yet
In today's fast-paced world, finding a fulfilling and enriching hobby can be a challenge. For those who love music and crave a sense of community, joining a chamber choir can be the perfect solution and 152.8 Chamber Choir currently have vacancies.

152.8 Chamber Choir is currently made up of 15 voices; 4 Soprano, 4 Alto, 4 Tenor and 3 Bass and the group is looking to expand to 5 voices per part.
The group sings mostly unaccompanied music in up to 8 parts with music ranging from the 16th Century right though to the modern day. They have recently been singing in Moraira church and are currently preparing for multiple performances in the Autumn season including their Halloween Concert at the caves in Benidoleig.
“152.8 is more than just a choir” commented John Oliver Edwards, the groups Musical director, “We are a group of friends who enjoy spending time together, singing some of the most beautiful music in the world.”
If you are interested in applying for one of the available positions in the choir please contact John on his email musicaldirector@152music.com and he will arrange a time for you to have an audition. This is the amazing show that twenty-one U3A Calpe members experienced this week at the first night of Cirque du Soleil's 'Alegria' performance in Alicante. The company has a world-wide reputation as being a top entertainer and this show certainly did not disappoint!
On a very warm evening we were all very pleased to take our seats inside the wonderfully cool 'big top'. The evening hadn't started too well, as the bus we were travelling in developed a mechanical fault soon after getting on the N332. Fortunately, with the help of 2 Guardia Civil officers, the driver and a mechanic, the fault was quickly rectified and we were back on the road and at the venue in ample time! I think we all agreed that the Grand Final Aerial Trapeze was literally, breathtaking to watch!
The co-ordination and skill displayed by this amazing troupe of performers is indeed awesome and led to a standing ovation by a very 'joyful' audience.

Kenny Corris brings you
Aries: The Mercury Retrograde together with the New Moon in Leo may see plans alter somewhat, and delays in transport are on the cards. Have a plan B as back up now.
Taurus: The Full Moon in Aquarius forms a strong angle with an impulsive Uranus this month. You can expect surprises and someone close to you finally gets a run for their money!
Gemini: A strong Mars coupled with inspiring Jupiter sets the ball rolling this month. You never know what you can do before you try. Go for it! You really have nothing to lose, and all to gain.
Cancer: Virgo enters Venus in the fourth house of thought and re-thinking. Nothing now can be as it was, so see this as a time to move on, and take on all aspects of control now.
Leo: The New Moon in your sign sees a fresh start as the best solution. Once you spoil something it’s very hard to ever recreate it all over again. Just hold your head up high and be patient.
Virgo: The entry of Venus always brings love and harmony; breathing life into a friendship that was on the rocks, but which now is going strong. Stay centred and all will be well for you.
OUR OROSCOPE
Libra: Mercury Directs at the end of the month. Time for you to test targets and take a risk on something that could just work very much to your advantage. Aspects of finance are good.
Scorpio: Your opposing sign of Taurus sets the scene this month. Your own psychic powers tell you clearly that something just doesn’t add up, there is a new version of a sad truth.
Sagittarius: Saturn calls the shots on Jupiter as the taskmaster this month. There have been some delays to a project and you are needed. Time will tell now you look for answers.
Capricorn: The focus this month is on domestic issues and sees you finally getting your say about something. Don’t hold back, you’re moving on. Nothing and nobody should stand in your way.
Aquarius: With the Full Moon in your sign beware of sudden change of heart, because you really don’t know the whole truthful story, after all. Time to get answers for clearance.
Pisces: Expansive Jupiter squares on Saturn. An acquaintance is about to become a friend and life is about to take on a whole new edge. Forget the past, focus on a brighter future.

No smoking on Benidorm’s accessible beaches
The accessible beaches of Levante and Poniente in Benidorm have been declared smoke-free zones to protect the health of residents and visitors. Benidorm’s accessible beaches already have infrastructure in place so that they are accessible to everyone, without barriers.
Posters have been put up around the beach resort highlighting the initiative to prevent cancer, which is being promoted by Benidorm City Council and the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC).
The initiative could be expanded to create tobacco-free zones in other council-run places, such as parks.
The measure has been put in place at the height of the tourist season, which sees the population of Benidorm quadruple. A popular destination for British tourists, the resort is also a hot choice for Spaniards. According to flight and hotel search engine Jetcost.es, searches for accommodation in July show that Madrid is the most sought-after city in Spain to travel to, followed by Benidorm in second place and Alicante in third.

Adopt a Pet
If you have spare time on your hands please contact your local pet charity to see how you can help out. They are always in need of more volunteers to walk the dogs, stroke the cats, meet the horses or help with cleaning out the kennels and stables. If you have an idea for fund raising they would love to hear from you.
Vince 7 is a gorgeous boy who is so easy to walk and who adores female dogs but sadly has seen many girlfriends go to their forever homes. We recommend that Vince goes to a home where there are no small children, or cats. Please contact Akira Shelter on 657 689 567 or email akirashelter@aol com.
Misty, Podenco, DOB 07.13. Misty was found very nervous & stressed and will need short periods of home alone time after she's settled, so she doesn't become stressed. She would be very happy living with a similar sized male. An older family with a secure garden where she can run around off the lead would be ideal. Please call 618 754 635 or visit www.apasa.eu.

Timple is 9 years old and not a simple dog, not your average Podenco by far but he has so much love to give and would make a fabulous companion for the right family. He is a dog full of character, a dog to make you smile every day. A dog desperate for love and affection. A dog needing understanding. Please contact apropego@gmail.com, or call 654 616 043.
SOFIA is a super sweet (about 12 yrs) cat, too old for the hustle and bustle in the shelter.
