10 boxes of food collected for Caritas
Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea want to thank all of their generous customers, staff and local residents who donated to their Christmas Food Collection. Thanks to their generosity, Caritas was presented with 10 boxes of food in January.
This will help to feed the 334 families that Caritas Parroquial Ntra. Sra. De Loreto support on an ongoing basis. They provide food and help them with their individual needs, such as clothing, housing costs etc. They also run workshops to help people gain the skills they need to find work, and get out of the difficult situation that they find themselves in.
This food collection is part of Specsavers Ópticas Jávea’s ongoing commitment to supporting this excellent charity. In June 2022, they signed an agreement for the optician to donate one pair of glasses per month to their charity and this will continue this year.
Since then, Caritas has been selecting someone each month who needs glasses but can’t afford them. They have a complete eye test to check their eyes are healthy and find out their prescription, before choosing a pair of frames. The lenses are then be made to their prescription and they receive the glasses, completely free of charge.
Store Director Isabel Fenollar explains, ‘We already offer free eye tests, to ensure everyone can have their eye health checked, but know that, for some, a pair of glasses can be very difficult to afford. If you have poor eyesight, this further restricts your job options and can hold you back at school. This is the last thing that these families need, which is why we have committed to give one
of
to
to allocate those to the people who are most in need. We hope this will make things just a little bit easier
these families.’

What makes Jennifer Cunningham Insurances so different?
A good question and I can offer you a number of answers.
I started my company nearly 30 years ago, working from home and developing the business slowly over a number of years. Once established, I employed staff and rented a large office in Jávea port, where I am still to this day. How life has changed for me, and for the better.
I realised when I moved to Spain, that there was very little help available and what was available was normally in Spanish. There was no private health insurance, no funeral plans and no insurance dedicated to the Expat, and little customer service.
I started the business selling health insurance for a British company, along with funeral plans. Having lost my husband in Spain, I realised how difficult it was to arrange a funeral and the costs were enormous.
Being very disciplined myself (probably due to my time in the Air Force), I have a strong work ethic. I used to work from home during the day, and I would go out early evenings making home visits until I was busy enough to take someone on to help me. From those early days when I worked tirelessly, I built my company and now have 7 offices. I demand from my excellent and loyal staff that they treat all my clients with respect, courtesy and honesty and offer them the best service that is possible.
I pride myself that the after sales service is the best, a service very rare in Spain. I have a Claims Administrator and a dedicated Renewal Department, who will make sure that as your circumstances change, your policies can change with you and you are fully aware of your coverage.
So these are just some of the reasons why we are so special. We are more than just a voice on the phone, offering good, old fashioned service. Not always the cheapest, but the best, working with Liberty Seguros and ASSSA healthcare, who both provide special Expat policies and are the best in the market.
For more information or a quotation, please call one of my offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.
February is the month of love and I hope you all get to celebrate it with someone special. I will probably be celebrating it with the grandchildren as somehow, darling daughter thinks us oldies aren't romantic anymore so they can go out and celebrate whilst we stay in baby sitting. It is also carnival time throughout Spain so look out for what is going on in your area - this fun event is great for the whole family. Get dressed up and join in, or just go along and enjoy the atmosphere.
What a lovely winter we have had, but now the weather has turned and the thermals are back out again. I do love curling up in front of the fire but the feeling soon wears off. At least we know it is not going to be too long before the temperatures rise again. Since we got our new rescue mutt I am out and about much earlier than before and have been enjoying some beautiful sunrise (and sunset) moments with deep orange and pinks that look like paintings. Mother nature really is amazing. Until next time, take care and be kind.

THE NEW SPACE RACE
I think most people will have seen the recent launch by NASA of the Orion capsule around the Moon. They might also have heard that it was an important step in men returning to the Moon after so long a time. What most people might easily miss, is how many other countries are sending unmanned landers there, and just how many space launch and satellite nations there are.
I'm writing this on the day that the UK is expecting to make it's first space launch, a capability we would have had long ago if it wasn't for the appalling cancellation of the brilliant Black Arrow rocket back in 1971, so it seems a good time to remind ourselves just how big a business space has become. You might rightly expect that most satellites are made by America, Russia and China, but did you know that the UK is the fourth largest manufacturer? Well over 500 satellites so far, worth billions to the economy. Where is the nearest rocket factory to us here on the Costa Blanca? It's in Elche, right on our doorstep. PLD Space, are a successful company that so many of us have never heard of, Spain has a launch site being developed near the Portuguese border where they have been testing rocket motors for PLD.
The list of new players in the space race goes on and on, how many of us know about the very experienced Swedish launch site? Over 500 sounding rockets have been launched from there, and they will be launching orbital rockets soon. Many people might have missed the very successful Mars probe sent by the United Arab Emirates, and that there are many countries building Lunar landers. Over the next year or two Japan, India, Russia, the USA, South Korea and the UAE will all be going or trying to go to the Moon and I expect others will follow.
So, what's driving all this exploration? Firstly, space launch costs have dropped considerably in the last decade, mostly because of technical advances. Secondly, countries do not want to be left behind in a changing world, the future is out there as the old saying goes. Lastly, the discovery of water on the Moon is a game changer for any bases that are built in the decades ahead. Simple H2O is remarkably useful, not just for drinking but because it can easily be changed into lots of other things, even potentially rocket fuel. All this makes the moon a very attractive place to launch missions to the rest of space, including Mars.
Lastly, for successful players in this game, there's a lot of money to be made and that's always a huge motive for anything. Do you fancy a trip around the Moon? Perhaps you will fly past the new lunar orbiting space station now being built. Tickets aren't available yet, but one company is planning to sell them soon, a snip at 150 million dollars a seat, months of training included.

Charles Oates, Vega Baja Astronomy Group.Financial Advice from our family to yours
What factors separate one adviser from another?
What should investors be looking out for when engaging with a financial adviser?
Iam sure many of us will have found ourselves in a situation where we have gone ahead with the first piece of advice a specialist recommends to us, especially if they are in a field which we are not overly familiar with. However, sometimes it pays to seek a second opinion.
In our industry as financial advisers, we come across many clients who presume that all advisers do exactly the same job on exactly the same terms. In reality, this is not the case.
Although many advisers have the same solutions available to them, some might be restricted in the products they can offer, and others may favour one product over another at outset. Does this mean that they are finding the best and most suitable solution for your needs? Perhaps not.
Other areas where advice companies can also differ are;
Charges: Even if different advisers recommend the same product to you, this does not automatically mean it will cost you the same amount. We know from experience that there is a significant difference in the amounts each adviser will charge a client so it is definitely worth making sure you fully understand all of the fees.
Regulation: The majority of firms will be regulated via some jurisdiction, but it is always worth checking you know exactly where. It will protect you as an investor.
Qualifications: There is currently no “minimum standard” here in Spain like there is in the UK, but qualifications highlight credentials and knowledge. In the UK, the minimum standard to advise clients is Diploma status (level 4) but a lot of advisers in Spain have not reached this level.
Personality & Trust: A financial adviser, client/ family relationship should be built for the long-term. It is therefore important to really feel comfortable with the adviser you are dealing with.
If you sit down with an adviser and they seem reluctant to let you seek a second opinion, or you feel rushed into making a decision, it is probably because the adviser knows that they might come out as second best in at least one of the categories mentioned in this article.
At Logic, we never shy away from clients who want to “shop around”. To the contrary, we actively encourage it as we know it will showcase the benefits of choosing our company. We have been told by a number of our existing clients that you cannot underestimate the benefits of working with a family run business. Aside from the level of trust this provides, it is also noticeable how clients warm to the fact that we treat them as “our clients” as opposed to “his” or “her” client, which they may have experienced in the past.
6 reasons to choose us:
1 We are fully regulated and licensed.
2 We have multiple advisers qualified to UK diploma level.
3 We are an award-winning family run business.
4 We disclose any remuneration and are 100% transparent.
5 We have over 45 years combined experience.
6 We pride ourselves on the personal touch.
Next time you have a financial concern, why not get in contact with us to discover the difference?

The Gel Bottle Inc @ Mimiskru Jávea
Written by Jo BlackThe Gel Bottle is a vegan product which goes a long way with myself and other people who wish to protect the global environment. It’s 100 per cent safe unlike some other gel nail chemicals. Ask yourself; why a nail service is cheap and fast? There are many nail salons that offer a conveyor belt service, using cheap toxic products to keep their prices down.
The Gel Bottle Inc are non-toxic 100% gel formulas, they are rich, highly pigmented, chipresistant and offer extreme long lasting shine. Their products do not contain Formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, toluene, formaldehyde resin or camphor. So think of your health rather than your wealth when choosing a nail service.
Easy soak off is another plus to protect your nail bed, when removing The Gel Bottle products, it’s easy to file and it doesn’t need a primer. So a faster effective service whilst leaving your health and the planet intact.
The Gel Bottle Inc is very hard wearing, more durable and lasts longer. So the cost for such a product gives you the value for money
especially at MIMISKRU in Jávea. A Gel Bottle Manicure is 30 euros and if you require that little extra layer of BIAB to strengthen your nails, it’s 33 euros, recommended lasting period 2- 3 weeks. What is BIAB? Builder in a bottle! Unlike Acrylic, UV gel is a premixed substance used to cover the natural nail plate as a strengthening overlay. This is a very popular service at MIMISKRU encouraging the natural nail to grow without extension. But, naturally we do other tipped nail extensions with the BIAB. Builder in a bottle is a medium viscosity builder gel, comes in a bottle and applied like a polish to a certain extent. It creates short to medium length nails and is fully soak off-able.
Jo Black and Trudi have recently qualified in The Gel Bottle at MIMISKRU and are offering an introductory offer; for the first 10 Gel Bottle nail clients, a Gel Bottle manicure is on offer at 10 euros per set. If the lucky client rebooks within 3 weeks they will receive a further discount on this service.

Erectile Dysfunction
Most sexually active men will be familiar with erectile dysfunction (ED), even if they’ve never experienced it personally. ED is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection during sex. It’s something that can happen on a one-off basis OR can be an ongoing problem. But let’s be clear it is not just the men that suffer when suffering with ED but their partners also. Surprisingly it is estimated that half of all men over the age of 40, will have at some degree suffered the problem, greatly impacting on personal relationships and self-confidence.
Now available is a non-invasive Extracorporeal Shock wave Therapy (ESWT), this is a clinically proven method and has been used for treating various medical conditions in the past. Treatment consists of low-intensity sound waves passing through the erectile tissue, helping to restore the natural erectile function by clearing plaque out of blood vessels and encouraging the growth of new blood vessels. The shockwave treatment offers a cure in that it reverses the problems that cause the dysfunction in the first place — the most desired win-win outcome coveted by men with ED. Making healthy lifestyle choices like taking regular exercise, drinking less alcohol, and stopping smoking can help with ED. Don’t suffer in silence and put unnecessary strain on your relationship, contact your GP for more information.
DO I NEED A HYDRAFACIAL?
HAVE YOU EVER HAD "THAT MOMENT"?
Maybe you're putting on your makeup and you lean in to really study your skin for a minute, and wonder how long it's looked like that. "That moment"when you realise
your skin is just not as firm, healthy, and glowing as you'd like. There is no denying the effect ageing has on the skin. The natural turnover of skin cells that replaces old, dull skin with fresh new cells slows down. The buildup of dead skin cells not only makes the surface of the skin look dull and dry, it also makes it harder for skin care ingredients to penetrate and do their work.
BUT THERE IS HOPE!
At ZEN SMILE SPA we offer the innovative HydraFacial treatment to help you fight back. Make no mistake, this is not just a simple facial. This is science-backed treatment with beautiful benefits for your skin. It delivers long-lasting results, yet is gentle enough for sensitive skin.
Let's take a look at the steps of the HydraFacial.
1. Detox. 2. Cleansing and Exfoliation 3. Brightening Agent. 4. Extraction. 5. Hydration. 6. Rejuvenation
This remarkably effective treatment can be modified to target a range of concerns, including anti-ageing, pigmentation reduction, acne and congested skin, and rosacea. There's no need to accept the dulling effects of ageing. Let our trained practitioners help you fight back with powerful therapies that support the health of your skin. Our HydraFacial treatment will not only help you look your best, it will leave your skin feeling wonderful too.
DO I NEED A CHEMICAL PEEL?
Chemical peels are used for a variety of reasons; from treating acne scarring to erasing dark spots and even fighting wrinkles. They can also help even out uneven skin tones.
Unlike other treatments, chemical peels are great for individuals across the skin type spectrum. Peels can be specially formulated to your particular skin type. From dry sensitive skin to oily and combination, there is a peel for everyone.
Chemical peels are available in various levels of depths.
Light peels: remove the outermost layer of the skin. These treatments are a quick and easy way to fight fine lines and wrinkles and help improve the skin’s tone and texture. Light peels have the least amount of down-time after treatment and are the least irritating for the skin.
Medium peels: remove two layers of skin and are a better choice if you’re looking to help erase acne scarring and help easy deep-set wrinkles.
Deep peels: offer the most intense exfoliation, removing three layers of skin. These types of peels are ideal for alleviating severe acne scarring. While light and medium peels can take the skin a week or two to return to normal, deep peels can take up to a month. Feel free to contact us for answers to any further questions regarding chemical peels.
Intelligent traffic cones to improve road safety
Articleby Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.com
Spain has developed the world’s first traffic cone with geolocated lights to improve road safety for drivers and operators carrying out road maintenance works. The devices, developed by the Alcoy-based Grupo Erum company, allow motorists to be alerted in advance of the presence of works and other incidents.
The Erum Group, through its subsidiary PF Erum Vial, the ALVAC company based in Madrid and the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA) have successfully completed the first tests on the Reguerón highway in Murcia.
The high-tech PF cones have lights, sensors and locators that collect information such as the location of roadworks as well as other information including how heavy the traffic is, how fast the traffic is moving and weather conditions. The cones transmit the location of works and accidents on the road in real time with the purpose of preventing risks to road users and improving safety for road maintenance workers.
Gastronomy fair in Benigembla
Lovers of traditional produce including artisanal sausages and cured meats should head to Benigembla on Sunday March 5 for the annual Feria del Embutido.
The Feria del Embutido y el Producto Tradicional de la Vall de Pop celebrates the local gastronomy in a day full of activities as well as stalls offering typical gastronomic produce.
During lunch, dozens of kilos of the best sausages and cured meats are available as well as wines and other gastronomic delights. It is also a chance to savour figatell made with various meats and spices, which is widely known as the Valencian burger. In addition, there will be live music, workshops and a charity raffle. The Jalon Valley's history with traditional sausage-making goes back around 400 years. After the expulsion of the Moors in the early 17th century, the population was sparse until the Mallorcans moved in and brought the production of their sausages to Jalón, especially sobrasada, figatell, butifarra, blanquet and longaniza.

Commemorating Valencian artist Sorolla
More than 100 paintings are on display in Alicante to commemorate the centenary of the death of Valencian painter Joaquín Sorolla Bastida (1863-1923).
The exhibition, Sorolla and the Valencian painting of his time, can be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts of Alicante - MUBAG - until June 25. The first section is dedicated to artists such as Francisco Domingo, Bernardo Ferrándiz, Joaquín Agrasot and Muñoz Degrain who made an important contribution to the foundation of the Valencian school of painting towards the end of the 19th century.
Also on display are works by artists including Ignacio Pinazo and Emilio Sala, who had enormous influence on Sorolla as well as a large display of Sorolla’s paintings from different periods. Many of these paintings have come from the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia and private collections in Spain. Jávea’s impressive landscape was a major influence on the Valencian painter who visited the town five times. In a telegram, Sorolla wrote: “Jávea is sublime, immense, the best place I know for painting.” He created more than 100 paintings and around 200 drawings showing the diverse Jávea landscape such as the Port, Cabo San Antonio and La Grava.
One of the star pieces of the exhibition is Sorolla’s extraordinary canvas, Fiesta Valenciana, painted in 1894, which can be seen for the first time in Alicante.
MUBAG in Calle Gravina, in the centre of Alicante, is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 8pm, and on Sundays and fiesta days from 10am to 2pm.

Best waterfalls to visit in Alicante province
Article by Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.com
Amid the dramatic mountains and picturesque villages in Alicante’s interior are some wonderful waterfalls to visit. Here are some of the best waterfalls to visit within easy driving of the Costa Blanca.
Algar waterfalls
The Algar waterfalls or Fuentes del Algar (pictured) are the best-known in the area. They are 18 kilometres inland from Benidorm and three kilometres from Callosa d'en Sarrìa. This natural beauty spot is one of the finest in the Alicante province. You can bathe in the waters or walk around the group of connected waterfalls and rivers.
It is a tourist area, so it is crowded in the summer months. But this does mean there are several restaurants close by as well as a picnic area, camping and the DinoPark Algar dinosaur theme park.
Xorros waterfall
About four kilometres from the Algar waterfalls is the lesser-known Font dels Xorros. The water cascades into a little pond and is a beautiful natural haven. You can also bathe in these waters.
Elche reservoir
This is another lesser-known sight and is the first arch dam built in Europe. You can hike from the Carrús industrial estate through palm groves and picnic areas to reach the Pantano de Elche reservoir with its dramatic cascading waters. Keep an eye out for the variety of flora and fauna in this stunning location.
Rambla de Puça
Thirty kilometres inland from the Elche reservoir is the Rambla de Puça walk. On the eight-kilometre round trip from the centre of Petrer, you will visit waterfalls, small natural pools and historic mills.
Tibi dam
About 35 kilometres from the Elche reservoir heading back to the North Costa Blanca is the Tibi dam. At one time this was one of the largest in Europe and has been providing water for nearly 450 years.

Improve your business with the CBBA
The Costa Blanca Business Association was established more than 15 years ago by 16 local independent business people who recognised the need for an effective networking and referrals group. The concept is simple. Word of mouth is one of the more effective ways to get business. If you’re a tradesman for example, and you do a great building job for a customer, and they now need some painter and decorator, saying “I know someone who you can trust, I’ll stake my reputation on it” carries enormous weight. Well, now imagine you’re in a group of like-minded businesses where you know and trust a whole range of business - this is the CBBA. Unlike networking groups, the CBBA specifically requires its members to actively promote other members when the opportunity arrives. It’s not unusual for a number of our members to do work for the same person: a new kitchen leads to electrical work, leads to plumbing, building, carpentry and decorating.
The members meet every 2 weeks in and actively share the work they have found for each other. On average, each member receives 2-3 ‘referrals’ (business opportunities) every month. So you can imagine that’s a lot of business opportunities exchanged. CBBA is run as an association with its statues and rules and is registered in Spain. Members are accountable to each other and can deal with any complaints - although this is very rare indeed. CBBA on allows 1 member per business category so there’s no internal competition. All in all it’s a great way to GROW YOUR BUSINESS. At this time, we have vacancies for a number of business types including: Carpenter, Toldos supply and install, printer, vehicle repair and a number of others.
GET IN TOUCH
If you’re in business and want to grow, find out more by visiting our website www.cbba.es or contact us by email at info@cbba.es. If we have a free category, you can come along to a meeting as a guest and see for yourself how it works and if it’s for you. We look forward to hearing from you.
Early Bird
We all know the saying, ¨the early bird catches the worm¨. This couldn’t be more correct if you wanted it to be. As you can imagine we get a lot of enquiries for Artificial Grass especially once we enter springtime and into summer because everyone wants work done for summer, and as much as I don’t want to sound like a broken record player, it really makes sense to book work in, with any contractor, be it a plumber, builder, or us, as soon as possible. We often book work in several months in advance, as it suits or helps our clients. The last thing we want to do is to not be able to serve the needs of a client.
If you are thinking about the idea of artificial grass, then don’t delay call us today and arrange a meeting where we will show you our grasses, measure the site area and explain how everything works. We don’t pressure our clients to do the work immediately, we don’t even mind waiting until after summer, whatever suits you, but it allows us to fill our calendar and it means our clients get what they want, and when they want it. We have been involved in installing artificial grass now for close to 17 years, longer than any other competitor we know about, and we enjoy our work.
So don’t think you will be pressured into something if we see you today, when you may be thinking you want to complete the project in November, it doesn’t matter we are here to help. So if you think you want something doing for summer call us now to avoid disappointment and make sure you book in work with the Nº1 Artificial Grass Company in Spain.
As a foot note to this, we are also doing SUPPLY ONLY grass now, (alongside our standard install work) meaning if you want one of our grasses you can simply order it through our website, let us know which grass and how much via our sizing guide, order and we deliver normally within the week. Then you can install the grass when you, your builder or gardener is ready.
At Artificial Grass Spain we have had so many very happy clients, don’t risk being not one of them.

Walk Your Way Well
So, your New Year's Resolution started well and then....... Yep! Same as every year. You hit the middle of January and it all went out the window. Does this sound familiar? If this reads like your story then I have great news. I might have a "secret ingredient" that can help you stick to your resolution in 2023 and forever. Are you ready to start again? This time do it a bit differently. How? ACCOUNTABILITY.
Accountability is the willingness to be seen as you set your goal and as you go about trying to achieve it. Being seen in moments of success and struggle makes our goal feel real. I run several "accountability pods" every month. Groups of people coming together to hold each other accountable in their wellness, walking or alcohol-free challenges. There's no finger-pointing or peer pressure. There is warm support and a safe place to post your achievements and mishaps. Keeping in mind that positivity is contagious, we share your wins no matter how tiny! These groups really do work. Why? “Accountability is the glue that binds commitment to results!” - Bob Proctor.
So, that's my TIP for this month. Find yourself an accountability Buddy, Group or a Personal Coach. And watch your commitment and consistency levels soar!
ACCOUNTABILITY is incredibly powerful in helping you achieve your targets and goals. Harness it! Accountability is a golden opportunity to share your challenge or resolution with likeminded people. Every one of the people in your group will want to succeed and that creates a positive environment for success. Everyone of your accountability group will want the others to succeed too. Accountability makes reaching your goals much more of a certainty. We are taking responsibility for our actions. We are allowing ourselves to be observed and evaluated. We are opening up and being honest about our endeavours every day.
with Niamh O'SheehanSetting yourself a goal and trying to achieve it alone there is an average of a 46% success rate. Committing to a goal out loud to others gives us a 76% chance of success. Well, that's according to a Harvard study - and sure that's close enough to a 100% in my mind! Keeping your resolution hidden in your head gives you an easy out when your chimp starts telling you to stay home on the sofa, or to eat that cream bun or to have "just one glass of wine". Let others know about the journey you are planning to embark on. You are about to do something amazing for yourself. Your plan is going to work! Let your spouse, kids, friends, social media acquaintances, etc. know what you’re doing and how important it is to you! If they’re not on board, don’t let them drag you down. Misery loves company so steer clear of the misers! Stick with your accountability buddies or your coach and people who support you! If you would like more information about the accountability challenges and groups that I run just drop me a WhatsApp +34 676 507 791. Happy to set you up. And happier to see you succeed.

Alcalili, a rare gem in the Vall de Pop
At this time of year, the landscape of Alcalalí is tinged with white and pink almond flowers. Sadly, the almonds are no longer the main resource of the Vall del Pop area since the invidious disease Xylella fastidiosa wreaked havoc across local almond groves.
Until recently, Xylella, previously only found in North America, was unknown in Europe but in 2013, the bacterium was identified as the cause of widespread death among olive trees in southern Italy and more recently in Spain, where the same bacteria also devastated the almond trees.
Over the years, the inhabitants of Alcalalí and Vall de Pop were victims of frequent attacks by bandits who entered the area through the mountain pass at "Coll de Rates". At the end of the fourteenth century, Mosen Pedro de Castellví, sovereign of Alcalalí and Jalón, ordered the construction of a tower on the hill of Alcalalí, to serve as a watchtower over the local area and, in a worst-case scenario, as a last refuge in case of invasion.
Later, in 1599, Don Eiximen Ruiz de Lihory y Pertusa bought Alcalalí and ordered the construction of a palatial residence. The Ruiz de Lihory family ruled until 1837 when seigniorial regimes were abolished.
Today, the Tower and the Church (eighteenth century) are still the tallest buildings in the area. The most striking elements of the Medieval Tower are the graffiti and engravings found on the second and third floors, executed between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.
By 1900, the Tower and the Palace had both become private homes. In 1992, the Medieval Tower was acquired by the City Council of Alcalalí and three years later, the Tower was completely restored with the addition of an elevator. During the Festali, that runs from the 5th February to 26th this year, it will be possible to enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the Vall de Pop from the tower, on Wednesdays, Fridays, and weekends from 10:30 to 13:30h.
The Vall del Pop area is planning a list of other activities for this season (not yet finalised as we go to press.). However, highlights of previous years have included cooking competitions involving the much-celebrated local hero, the almond. Hopes are high that a broader scale but similarly innovative programme has been put together for 2023.
A festive, roasted pumpkin cake, a delicacy known locally as ‘Arnadi’, has already been promised. This cake, which has had considerable success at local dessert making competitions in recent years is easily prepared with: 1 kg roasted pumpkin, 1 kg sugar, 4 egg yolks, 200 gr. ground almonds, zest of 1 lemon, 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Mix the pumpkin with the sugar and egg yolks, cook the dough for 20 minutes while stirring, remove from the heat, add the lemon and cinnamon. Put in a cake tin at 150ºC (low heat for 2 hours). Garnish with pine nuts and almonds. (Recipe by Tere Moncho, submitted to the III Alcalalí Almond Sweets Contest of the IV edition of "Feslalí, Alcalalí en Flor" (2019).)

To attract visitors to this lesserknown area of the Marina Alta, Maria Roselló, a locally based expert in ecotourism, is proposing thematic tours including birdwatching, pet-friendly walks, ethnobotanics, wildlife tracking and others. Some of the walks are suitable for beginners while others are more challenging. To find out more visit www.alcalaliturismo.com or www.endemicanatura.com.
Maria has a particular passion for local orchids and is hoping that –weather conditions permitting - by end of February, we may be seeing some of her favourite giant ones flowering in our area. Each year the dates on which Feslalí is celebrated vary depending on the flowering of the almond tree, (four weeks of February). All listings correct as we go to press. Copyright Maria Roselló.

Jávea U3A members in awe of traveller’s tale
Not only is Jávea U3A’s auspicious Travellers’ Tales group leader Angela Chantry a great organiser and speaker but an outdoor fan with masses of energy and a passion for walking – as her latest presentation proved!
Members returning to the Jávea Players’ Studio for the January Travellers’ Tales meeting enjoyed a New Year drink and nibbles before being entertained by Angela’s talk, entitled The Greek Peloponnese and Athens.
Angela previewed her presentation by explaining that it was an illustrated account of her two-week walking and sightseeing holiday with daughter Becky. That proved to be something of an understatement, her “holiday” consisting of days of long, often challenging treks up and down rugged mountainsides, along railway tracks still used by trains and changes in climate from bright sunshine to freezing cold snow!
However, her springtime ‘jaunt’ satisfied Angela’s passion for history and reminders of civilisations of the past.
Angela and Becky’s adventure included visits to ancient monuments, museums and caves as well as the most famous landmark of them all: the Acropolis in Athens. It was a fascinating talk enjoyed by an appreciative packed house – and by Angela’s fellow group leader Tony, who could only sit back and savour the delights of a holiday that he was happy to let Angela and Becky do on their own!

Akira Dog Sanctuary improvement project
The Tree of Hope
The Tree of Hope is the symbol for a fund-raising campaign launched by Akira Dog Sanctuary to raise 50,000€ to extend facilities at its rescue shelter in Benissa.
Early December saw local dog sanctuary Akira hold a reception for local councillors, media, and sponsors to launch a new and exciting fund-raising project to transform land adjacent to its existing kennels in Benissa into a training and rehabilitation zone for dogs in its care.
“These new spaces will offer meaningful and effective rehabilitation and therefore enhance their potential for adoption,” explained Billie-Jo Johnson, Shelter Manager. “Being able to work with our dogs to teach them new life skills and help them overcome trauma will ultimately result in more successful home trials and adoptions, meaning that AKIRA can help support a greater number of dogs on their journey to adoption.”
To achieve its ambitions, Akira needs to raise an initial 50,000€. It is a challenging amount and to help it achieve its target, the charity has launched two new fund-raising initiatives: the Tree of Hope and Akira Angels.
The Tree of Hope
The Tree of Hope is a sculpture created and generously donated by local artist Christiane Engelmann. Located in the Akira shop, the Tree of Hope sculpture will have tags on its branches. It symbolises the vulnerability of those needing protection and the strength and confidence of those wanting to help.
The tags, which can be personalised, will be given to supporters who make a donation to the funding campaign. They will be available in the Akira Shop, at the Shelter and at future fundraising events.
Akira’s Angels
AKIRA already benefits from the generous support it receives through donations and from regular fund-raising events, but these are needed to pay or the day-to-day costs of running The Shelter. AKIRA’S Angels has been created to be a dedicated fund-raising source for the project and has its own website, www.akira-angels.org. Supporters can make regular or one-off donations on the site and a range of products to buy will be available soon.
The history of AKIRA 2011 - Akira founded 2016 - Dog shelter opens 2019 - Zoological Licence awarded 2021 - 10k+ social media followers 2022 - 2100 dogs have been rehomed since Akira founded
Running the shelter
Every month it costs 11,000€ to run the Shelter. All dogs have kennels and daily walks on leads in a safe outdoor environment. Akira’s goal is to transform existing land into a safe; secure environment whilst creating dog training agility areas
The project
Monies from our current fundraising activities support all costs associated with the dog shelter. To fund our project, we need to raise additional money.
Zone 1 – 50,000€. Phase 1 - 1000m2 / prepare area / install 1400 meters of secure fencing. Phase 2 – create terraces.
Zone 2 – 40,000€. Phase 1 – 4500m2 space securely linked to existing areas / additional secure fencing & emergency escape gate.
For more information or to give support please contact Akira on 657 689 567 or email akirashelter@aol.com, visit their website: www.akira-animals.com or Facebook AKIRA Animal Sanctuary.
