SUMMER in Spain has been dubbed accident season, as millions of people take to the roads for holidays. Due to higher volumes of traffic, increased alcohol consumption, greater numbers of tourists and hot weather, there are more road traffic accidents in the summer meaning drivers need to be extra vigilant – especially when it comes to their vision.

In the months of July and August 2022 alone, there were 225 deaths due to road traffic accidents1 in Spain. This is why, the experts at Specsavers Ópticas are urging people to make sure their eyesight will not be a cause of accidents this summer and are sharing the following advice. Make sure your prescription is up to date - It is extremely important to keep up to date with your eye tests – at least once every two years or more often if required by your optometrist.

Choose lenses for driving in bright sunshine - Polarised lenses are a good option for driving during summer months as they eliminate glare from horizontal surfaces, such as roads, water and sand. They also offer 100% UV protection, improve contrast and help ease the strain on your eyes. Avoid dry eyes - Make sure air vents are angled in such a way that cool air is not blowing into the face, as this can dry out eyes. Also make sure to blink regularly, to prevent dryness. When we are very focused and attentive on something (such as driving), our tendency is to blink less.

It means drivers will be able to spot potential dangers, see pedestrians and other vehicles, read road signs and judge speed, distance and movement. This is so important – are you prepared to protect your family?

Summer is definitely here along with the tourists. As they are so important to so many people here on the coast it is great to see the beaches filling up along with the restaurants and hotels. OK, it can be a bit of a pain finding a parking spot and the noise levels can get a little much but this really is a small inconvenience in relation to the amount of good tourism brings to the region.

As the schools are now closed for two and a half months - yes you read that correctly - I think my grandma skills will probably be needed to keep darling daughter sane. I have stocked up on baking necessities (yes coloured sprinkles come under necessities) and crafty stuff in order to be on call if necessary. They are spending most of their time in the pool at the moment but if last year is anything to go by then the novelty soon wears off.

OUR UNSTABLE SUN PART 2

Last month I explained about solar storms and the immense energy they can deliver to our Earth. I suppose that all those disaster films lead many people to suppose that anything like this is all fiction, unfortunately this is definitely science fact and these events are real. We've already looked at past events, and the huge damage done by less severe solar storms on the primitive electrical devices of 1859, the Carrington event I talked about last month, so now it's time to look at what we can do to help ourselves when the next one comes.

The first thing to realise is that we can't stop a solar storm, it's a vast amount of energy moving very quickly through space, so we can't block or deflect it. What we can do is plan for it and that begins with forecasting space weather. Long gone are the days when all we could do was watch the Sun from Earth like Richard Carrington did all those years ago, we now have very special satellites built to observe the Sun and track the Coronal mass ejections as it burps them out. This all started in the 1970s with the Helios satellites, leading up to the Parker solar probe of 2021 which gets really close and is arguably one of the greatest machines ever built. It has flown so close to the Sun that it passed through the corona gathering the information needed by astrophysicists. The Parker probe and other satellites can spot a dangerous event, and together they can track and work out the speed of them to see if they will hit the Earth. It's called predicting the solar weather and it gives us time to prepare things here.

So, what happens when we know trouble is heading our way? Astronauts on the space station who are not protected by our atmosphere will go to a special shielded area and wait it out. Electricity companies on Earth prepare the grids and networks for power surges. Spare transformers are brought from storage to replace those that explode. Some installations may shut down for a short time to avoid cascading failures.

What all this boils down to is that systems have been developed and new types of components fitted to electricity supplies to mitigate the worst types of failures we might have expected - thank goodness for science and research. There is no disaster movie in all this, just good engineering and planning against the ferociousness of the Sun. 2023 is the start of the current solar maximum, which is why I am talking about all this. For the next year or two there is an increased chance of a solar storm coming our way but don't let it worry you too much, leave the scare stories to the tabloid press.

Do you have adequate protection in place?

- Wills: The best way to document your wishes legally, avoiding any confusion on death. Having a Will in place can make life much easier for those dealing with an estate and greatly speed up the inheritance process.

- Powers of Attorney: These authorities can help save significant stress and aggravation if an individual loses mental capacity and is unable to manage their own affairs. We have seen this first hand; how difficult it can be to deal with providers and authorities without one.

It is common to shy away from protection as many don’t like to think about it or automatically perceive it to be costly. However, it is an important aspect when considering your future financial plans, ensuring your loved ones are taken care of and provided for.

If you haven’t considered it before, it would be worthwhile taking time to reflect on this subject. The cost of the cover might be less than you think.

CUPPING

So everyone is talking about Cupping, all the sports stars are investing in this Ancient Chinese, Egyptian and Middle Eastern technique. It back dates in one of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, which means that ancient Egyptians may have been using cupping therapy as early as 1550 B.C. Cupping therapy is a practice of using suction on the skin. This suction usually breaks the capillaries, the small blood vessels near the skin, which results in red marks where the cups were placed. It looks pretty horrendous, if you ask me. But, pain is the game and these marks only last a few days (in some cases up to 10 days) on your body, then fade away. Facial cupping is slightly different, so don’t worry ladies you won't be walking around with numerous circles on your face. Types of Veneers

Composite: laminate teeth made of composite are made of a material with a base of acrylic resin mixed with ceramic, which gives it a fairly high resistance. These veneers are placed directly on the tooth, where it gets moulded to the shape it should be and given the desired size, and then it gets hardened by using an ultraviolet light.

Porcelain Veneers: The porcelain is a glass-ceramic, which gives the highest level of resistance, similar to the enamel of the tooth itself.

Although porcelain veneers cost is a lot higher than that of composite veneers; this type of veneer is more durable. With good care they can be part of your smile between 10 and 15 years or much more. In addition, they have a more natural appearance and their colour does not usually suffer variations. This type of treatment does not need revisions from time to time, as it does with composite veneers.

IT’S SUMMER TIME TOO IN YORKSHIRE LINEN

U3A Vall del Pop Forthcoming events

The association covers both the Xalo and Orba Valleys. It offers over 30 various groups and welcomes all members to be actively involved. It has an active social side with trips and social events at which members are fully supportive. During the summer break we are holding a Summer Cava and Cake Get Together on August 4th. This will be very popular. In September we have an Evening with Neil Diamondpopular entertainer Steve Mark’s, at Pepe’s Alcalali.

Two Nights in Zaragoza

In September the Vall del Pop U3A TCET have organised a two-night stay in Zaragoza with a visit to the Monasterio de Piedra and the beautiful La Morderna gardens, with their spectacular waterfall as one of the highlights.

On the second day a guided tour of Zaragoza and the cathedral has been arranged, with free time in the afternoon for casual browsing in the beautiful streets and shops.

The trip will take place between 18th and 20th September with buffet style B&B basis. Dinner at the hotel is 18€ if any members prefer to stay in for their dinner. The coach will leave and return to Jalon, with coffee breaks along the route, and the cost of the trip is 250€ per person. Single person room occupation is an additional 50€.

Artificial Grass still surprises me

We have recently taken stock of a few new samples from our manufacturer, and we instantly decided to put them into our collection to see what our clients had to say about them as they look great, we already have a collection of 8 grasses to choose from, we actually have 24 landscape grasses available, as well as our sorts collections, but we naturally cut down the selection process to make it a bit easier for our clients.

Our collection is based on knowing that the grasses we supply are the absolute best when it comes to memory, durability, while still giving a good range of colours and lengths to choose from.

We have a very close relationship with our manufacturer having worked with them for around 10 years (with this particular company) and the simple fact is there is little to no grass on the market that is as good as ours in terms of looks, quality and price.

You can always buy a cheaper product, it’s the same with everything, but when you add it all up at the end of the day, how much are you really saving? This is the question you have to ask yourself and I have been seeing a lot of work where the age old saying comes in recently, (pay cheap, pay twice) and believe me now, we are no where near twice the cost of a cheap grass, making it total false economy.

The simple thing is when you have a terrace you don't like, an area you just want to make green, a horrible old lawn or gravel area that is unfriendly and unusable, then you need to give us a call, it's our speciality. Don't waste time on companies that dabble, or give yourself an injury trying to do it yourself, call the team who have made the rules (almost literally) when it comes to laying artificial grass. Proposed new AP7 motorway access at Gata de Gorgos

Plans are in hand to improve access to the AP7 motorway for people living in Jávea, Ondara, Pedreguer, Gata de Gorgos, Benissa and Teulada, among other towns.

The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) has provisionally approved a study about improving the N332 around Benissa, Gata de Gorgos and Pedreguer. The N332 forms part of the Mediterranean Road Corridor along the eastern coast of Spain. Since the tolls were abolished on the AP7 motorway on December 31, 2019, it has made it possible to promote the use of the motorway as a high-capacity road corridor in the Marina Alta region.

At present, around 20,000 vehicles a day use the N332 between Ondara and Gata, with traffic peaking in the summer period. Mitma has worked with the town halls in Pedreguer and Gata with the aim of halving traffic on this road, improving safety and cutting down journey times. A new connection between the motorway and the N332 should help to meet these aims as well as reduce traffic on the Ondara and Dénia link to the motorway.

It is expected that this €30-million project along with the Benissa bypass and improving the N332 between Benissa and Teulada will help improve road safety and traffic flows in the Marina Alta region.

The Phoenix Dancers have had an exciting start to the summer, having been chosen to appear in a music video. A Chilean born performer who lives in Madrid approached the group when he decided to base his video in Calpe. The Teatre-Auditori in Beniarbeig (less than 10 minutes from the Ondara shopping centre) will be hosting 'Singers Showcase' on Thursday 21st September. The Showcase will be an evening filled with a diverse range of music from inspirational and uplifting to musical theatre, stopping off at popular music en route.

The whole show will be performed by four different singing groups, all under the direction of Philip Ashley. Sounds Familiar will be performing excerpts from their previous show and also a preview of their new show. Also appearing will be two choirs, the Vall Del Pop Singers and Cantãmus. Both choirs have their own style of music. Finally the harmony group Adagio will be singing songs from their past and future repertoire as well as hosting the whole evening.

Apart from the Showcase being great entertainment in itself, it will also give you the opportunity to see what is coming up on the Costa Blanca in the next six to eight months, so you can decide if you want to see more of any particular group. Every group will be performing their own set separately, except in the Finale when all the groups will join together.

Walk Your Way Well

Every year I come back to the same conversation. How can we continue to walk and enjoy nature when it's so HOT? We can't simply stop our fitness for the summer! We need to adjust and take precautions. Here's some top tips:

• Work up gradually: You must allow your body to acclimatise gradually to higher temperatures. Cut back to an easier and shorter workout and gradually work back up to a longer stretch over a few weeks if you feel up to it. Your body will eventually acclimate to the heat. Something is better than nothing.

• Stay in the shade as much as possible, keep to shady streets or tree lined paths for your walk. Plan your route ahead rather than wander aimlessly on open plains.

• Wear appropriate clothing: Light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made from cotton is best. And of course, don't forget a hat and sunglasses. A wet bandana or neck cooler is a fantastic "trick" to keep you cool and feeling refreshed.

• Water: An hour or two before heading out drink two eight-ounce glasses of water. And as you walk have a drink every 15 to 20 minutes. When you get home fill your belly again. Hydration is key in the hot temperatures.

• Know when to stop: Heat stroke and heat exhaustion can be fatal! So, if you get a headache or feel dizzy then stop walking immediately, drink water and get out of the heat. Go home and let your body recover. Stay smart, stay safe and continue to Walk Your Way Well.

A centuries old icon

Because bodies essentially remain the same, with one head, two arms and two legs, we should not be surprised to see fashions from our past re-emerging. The mini skirt, the maxi dress, wide lapels, narrow lapels, long hair, shaved heads, beards –they have all been fashionable before and will come around again in the future whether we are here to witness it, or not.

What is unusual though is to know and love an item of clothing that has never been out of fashion. I refer of course to the iconic espadrille. True, they are not everybody’s cup of tea, but they have been the international go to footwear for more than 4,000 years and their links to our region of Spain, go back at least that far. Many of today’s espadrilles come from Bangladesh, but despite the less expensive import options, local production is still very much active.

The word espadrille is derived from the esparto, the Mediterranean grass which has traditionally been used to craft the braided sole of the espadrille for centuries. Esparto grass, or Stipa tenacissima, has been grown and used in our area, as well as in Andalucia, North Africa and parts of France. It is not known exactly how long-ago local people started employing it in their everyday lives but the Phoenician ship, wrecked at Mazarron around 650BC had an anchor rope made of esparto. It has also been used as floor covering, basket and pannier making, as waterproofing for shoes and other clothing and, of course in the making of the ubiquitous espadrille.

Different areas of Spain have developed their own styles, which are routinely worn by men, women, and children. Historic photographs reveal that espadrilles were a popular form of footwear across the board, sported by farmers and other workers as well as the professional dancers of the Sardana, Catalonia’s national dance, who sport beribboned espadrilles criss crossed around their ankles and lower legs, along with the wide skirts and red, tasselled caps tradition demands. As the shoe style spread across the world, espadrilles gained popularity across all levels of society. Everyone from President John F. Kennedy to Pablo Picasso were seen wearing the distinctive footwear.

Artist Salvador Dali played up his Catalan heritage and his eccentric persona by wearing lace-up versions with red socks and a skull cap. He was swiftly followed by Hollywood movie goddesses: Rita Hayworth in The Lady from Shanghai (1947) and Lauren Bacall in Key Largo (1948).

The Castañer family has been reinventing the espadrille since 1927. In the late ‘60s, the brand gained prominence after creating the first jute-soled wedge for Yves Saint Laurent – an iconic summer style.

In Spain, the espadrille has never been out of fashion.

Locally the time-honoured tradition is kept alive in Gata de Gorgos by Zahati. The brand was founded in 1870 making palm hats, using braiding techniques seen in espadrilles and the traditional esparto grass. The tradition has since continued with natural materials and expanded into a brand that encompasses hats and espadrilles keeping the craft of the esparto grasses alive today and almost certainly for generations to come.

La Nucía goes back to the Middle Ages

On 7, 8 and 9 July a medieval market is set up in the village centre of La Nucía to commemorate that on the 9th of July 1705 the town charter was signed. More than forty authentic artisans have reserved a space to sell what they have made with their own hands.

A medieval military camp is set up again in the Plaza de San José that offers ample space for demonstrations of medieval combat, archery and fencing workshops. To complete the medieval atmosphere, troubadours, knights, a belly dancer, buffoons, beggars and other medieval characters will tour the streets and corners of the market and close the market every night with a great fire show.

The Market is set up in the oldest part of the village, around the Town Hall, and opens to the public on Friday the 7th, Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th of July from 6pm to midnight (or later...). There is ample parking (free) in the Auditorio de les Nits car park, 100 metres from the market and in a large open-air car park, just behind the old town. Every evening from 7:30pm to midnight about twenty artisans will set up their stalls right by the sea. Since they are all true artisans, they can customise their products, adapt them to the preferences of their customers, or accept special orders. The stalls vary from week to week. Powerful women!

Sitting in the tranquil setting of the Golf Club in Jávea, with the gentle purring of the lawnmower outside, the women of the European Union of Women Marina Alta (EUWMA) heard about the tough and biased world of sportswomen. This is a world where you must be determined, resilient and search for encouragement!

Lisa Childs, a triathlete, boxer Amy Dale and weight lifter Melissa Wall spoke movingly of their chosen sport, not one of them fitting into the common perceptions of a 'women's sport'. Their stories unearthed disturbing facts but the good news is that these three inspirational women are already coaching and encouraging other women- and girls- into their sport by using their own experiences and expertise. And on a national and international scale, women sports professionals are fighting for equal treatment, quality equipment ...and for equal pay!

This meeting was one in a series looking at women within our own communities and learning about discrimination and the opportunities to gain equality. The next, in September will be on Women and Health.

Meanwhile during the summer there will be drop in events. Coffee at Claudia's Food Pub, Benitachell, 12 July at 11.00 and Tea at Cafe Aroma, near Les Fonts in Benitachell, 24 August at 4pm; EUWMA meetings are open to everyone. Other planned events include Tapas with EUWMA and discussions on the work that is ongoing in Spain, Europe and around the world on women's issues (October) and International Day for the elimination of Violence against Women and Children (November). Day trip to Cullera

Glorious sandy beaches, an impressive castle, a lush botanical garden and a top-class restaurant dubbed ‘the cathedral of rice’ make Cullera a fascinating town to visit.

Cullera is easy to spot from the N332 and AP7 roads with its hilltop Hollywood-style sign saying Cullera being hard to miss! The town is 73kms north of Jávea - about an hour's drive - and 50kms south of Valencia.

A trip to Cullera would not be complete without spending an hour or so in the Dragut Cave Museum as it is said to be the only museum in Spain that is dedicated to piracy. You will be whisked back to 1550 when the Turkish pirate Dragut attacked the resort. Word has it that the cave is where prisoners were exchanged during this attack. The museum includes a reconstruction of a brig, artillery, maps, clothing and old nautical instruments.

You can step back further in time when you visit Cullera Castle built in the 10th century. This impressive hilltop fortress has played a major part in the town's history for around 1,000 years. You can find out more as you wander through the castle and its various exhibitions. The views are spectacular too!

A super spot for lunch is at the well-known Casa Salvador, renowned for its amazing rice dishes. Known as the cathedral of rice, this restaurant is in a beautiful building overlooking the L’Estany De Cullera lagoon. The restaurant was founded by Salvador Gascón and Concha Ortega in 1950, and is still a family business specialising in typical Valencian cuisine. Salvador created a special paella de Cullera starring rice and fish and has organised many important gastronomic events including the first World Rice Congress held in Cullera in 2007.

After a splendid lunch, you could relax on one of the fine, sandy beaches. A favourite with locals is the Faro de Cullera beach, which is considered to be the best beach for diving. For location, San Antonio beach is next to the promenade - handy for shops and restaurants.

Time permitting, take a peek inside Botanic Cullera and wander around the botanical garden with more than 2,500 different plants and a museum displaying historic farm appliances inside a restored 19th century farmhouse.

The English Choir are trying a new initiative this year, the “Summer Sing”!

Choir Secretary Di Leary advised, “as the majority of our members are in Spain over the summer months, we thought we would try a weekly singing session. This allows us to continue singing and of course is a social opportunity too. With our MD John Oliver Edwards happy to support the trial, we will be able to work on vocal techniques, learning new material for our Autumn Concerts, and of course, have a good sing! This will be a “pay-as-you-go” drop in opportunity, and new members are welcome to come and meet the group and give it a try. U3A face to face with Terracotta Warriors

Members of Jávea U3A embarked on a unique journey into the distant past on a day trip to Alicante.

Led by Travel Group leader Amanda Jordan, the party of 46 visited the international exhibition

‘The Heritage of the Qin and Han Dynasties’ to view a collection of life-size terracotta warriors as well as more than 100 original artefacts unearthed in China in what has been described as the greatest discovery in the history of archaeology. The exhibits on show are just a small part of the incredible army of 8,000 warriors, 500 horses and 130 battle chariots which have been guarding the tomb of Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Qin Emperor who ruled ancient China 2,000 years ago. DENIA ROCK CHOIR ROCKS TO HELP LOCAL COMMUNITY!

Recently the Denia Rock Choir finally got to do their charity concert under direction from musical director Aileen Lightfoot. It was a fabulous performance enjoyed by choir and audience alike.

There were two performances which were held at the Salon in Hostel Loreto where we all had a wonderful surprise when Aileen picked up her violin and gave us a rendition of Ed Sheeran’s song Perfect which was absolutely 'perfect'.

The charity 'Extien Tu Mano' were the recipients of the collection which we were very proud of the amount €550. When the money was given over some committee members were given a tour of the facilities and an outline of their work with the homeless and local families in need.

Calpe U3A also enjoyed a visit from the choir where they sang old favourites and songs new to the choir. The audience were very appreciative of the song list and very complimentary at the end.

We are really enjoying the direction of Aileen Lightfoot and all look forward to our Thursday nights at choir.

A dream comes true for Akira

For several years, dog rescue charity Akira has wanted to create a dedicated meet-and-greet space at its shelter where adopters and the dog can get to know each other in a quieter, less stressful place than the main Shelter area. The cost of such a project had proved prohibitive but this month the dream became a reality with the opening of the Maggie Shuck Centre.

“The idea of a meet-and-greet centre was inspired by a similar space at the renowned Woodgreen Animal Centre in the UK,” explains Billie-Jo Roberts, shelter manager. “It will make a big difference: adopters won’t feel rushed to make what is a life-changing decision and the dogs will be able to really show their personalities away from the hustle-and-bustle of the shelter. The centre will also help us rehabilitate nervous dogs; it will be a safe place where they can spend one-on-one time with our volunteers, relax and develop their confidence.”

The dream was made possible a year ago when a supporter kindly donated an old summer house. Since then, it has gradually been transformed with volunteers spending many hours of labour, time, blood, sweat and tears to prepare the site and repair the summer house.

“The centre will change so many lives,” said Roberts at the opening. “Akira is so grateful to everyone involved in making the dream become a reality: all those who volunteered, donated materials, skills, and time.”

In memory of Maggie Shuck

The centre is named after Maggie Shuck, a founder member of Akira who helped raise huge amounts of money to build the shelter. She continued to work tirelessly for the dogs throughout her life, often personally donating for various projects to improve their care. It was a huge loss to Akira when she died of covid in 2020.

Adopt a Pet

If you have spare time on your hands please contact your local pet charity to see how you can help out. They are always in need of more volunteers to walk the dogs, stroke the cats, meet the horses or help with cleaning out the kennels and stables. If you have an idea for fund raising they would love to hear from you.
