Conquering Montgó for DiabetesCERO
On the 26th May eight brave hikers (and a dog!) took on the Montgó mountain in aid of DiabetesCERO. Led by four team members from Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea, they set off at 9am. Facing their fear of heights and sticking together, they made great progress and reached the summit in one hour and 45 minutes.
The team smashed their €250 goal and raised €325, but they would love to keep fundraising for this important cause. They are still welcoming donations via their Go Fund Me page “Charity hike Montgó” or you can drop in a donation into the collection tin in store until the end of the year.
Optometrist Martín Barrera explains, “Thanks to everyone who joined our hike and sponsored us to complete the climb. We managed to make it to the summit and back in under three hours, quicker than we expected. The most challenging part was near the summit, where some of us had to face our fear of heights to make it up the huge cliffs, but we all managed to get through it together!
The weather was glorious, and we met quite a few more people during the climb and were able to talk about DiabetesCERO’s fantastic work, as well as raise awareness of the link between diabetes and vision loss, something which we are very passionate about.
If you have diabetes, or are at a high risk of developing it, please get your eyes tested regularly to spot signs of diabetic retinopathy. If this is undiagnosed and untreated, this can develop into Diabetic Macular Edema (DME), among other problems, and cause permanent vision impairment and blindness. Please protect your vision by having your eyes tests on a regular basis.”
You can find Specsavers Ópticas Jávea just off the Carretera Cabo la Nao-Pla, near Servicolor, at Avenida Del Pla 125, Edificio Caribe, Local 6, Jávea, 03730.
Request your free eye test at www.specsavers.es or pop into the store to make a donation to DiabetesCERO. The team will be fundraising for the charity throughout the year.
The grandchildren's school have a policy that the last day is for the kids. They don't force them to do dances etc for the parents, they do games and activities that the parents can help organise, and the children enjoy. I didn't remember just how glittery, glitter is. After glitter tattooing a gazillion children I was breathing and eating glitter for days, and still have a lovely odd sparkle in my hair. It just gets everywhere. I hear it is getting phased out due to not being very planet friendly but I do hope they find an alternative as the kids love it.
Last year darling daughter and I took gorgeous granddaughter to see a PINK tribute in Benidorm. She was fantastic and after singing ourselves hoarse, granddaughter said she had had the best time and couldn't believe she had seen, and had her photo taken with PINK. At no point had it occurred to us that she thought she was the real thing. We did explain and fortunately it didn't matter to her at all. This month we are all going to Amsterdam to see the real PINK. Darling daughter has made us matching T-shirts, they are both going to have the tips of their hair 'pinked', we have love heart shaped pink sunglasses chosen by granddaughter, the nail polish is more than sufficiently pink, and to say we are beyond excited is an understatement. So lucky to be part of these special moments in their lives.
Until next time, take care and be kind.

Molino Villas Opens New Property Centre in the Heart of Jávea
Molino Villas has been trading since 1999, and indeed has advertised some years ago in this very magazine. Over the past few years, there have been quite a few changes culminating in the business being taken over by Katalin Bene.
Katalin brings a whole new level of professionalism to Estate Agency and has formed a unique team to capitalise on the emerging buyers not only from the North of Europe, but also Poland and Hungary. So it’s not surprising that the team of Katalin, Jaclyn, Jessie and Elka cover all those languages and their website is the only one that is also translated into Polish and Hungarian (as well as English, Dutch, French and German).
For property owners thinking of selling, Molino Villas offer a level of professionalism and marketing expertise that will ensure properties for sale reach the widest possible market. Their personal service is offered to all clients and you will be dealing with one personal agent who will guide you through the whole process and will answer all your questions. Properties are advertised on various well known international websites, as well as their own website and also partner’s websites, giving property for sale a truly broad coverage. Molino Villas take time to ensure your property receives as much attention as possible with window displays, local newspaper advertising etc to ensure plenty of viewings and a sale.
Katalin and the team bring a level of optimism, determination and friendliness that sellers appreciate, all backed up with the correct licences and registrations. You are welcome to visit their offices in the heart of Jávea on Carrer Príncep d'Astúries, nº 13, or call on 966 492 335.
Financial Advice
I have always been conscious when smiling as my top teeth are crooked, I have put off correcting them as don’t want to have to go through months of wearing metal braces but am now getting married this winter and want to be able to smile with confidence for the photos. Are there any quicker but effective options available to me?
If you need braces but want something more discreet than the standard metal kind, you should consider invisible braces. These types of braces are a series of transparent retainers that straighten and align your teeth to give you that amazing smile you have been dreaming of, over a short period of time. The trays used fit snugly over your teeth so there is no need for the use of any metal brackets, wires, or elastics to help shift your teeth into a perfect position. Being practically pain-free, minimally invasive, and resistant to staining, they can be discretely removed during eating and drinking, and popped in again after.
To undergo invisible braces treatment, your Dental Professional will first need to perform a full study of your teeth with help of an orthopantomography x-ray to check the exact position of each tooth to ensure the treatment is suitable. Remember having invisible braces is a commitment, as they should be worn for up to 22 hours a day for the most effective results.

Saga of the HEEL PEEL
Continued from last month;
‘You’re retiring next week?’ Jane shouted in shock to Spencer, her husband, down the phone. 'Yes darling, I’ve taken early retirement, I fly home next week.’ Holy Moly, Jane thought as she finished her shocking conversation with Spencer. Her thoughts flooded into her head, how this current situation was going to interrupt her own life. Having Spencer home 24/7 what would he do? Play golf? No! Play paddle? Possibly? A lot of her friends’ partners play paddle. Drink beer all day? Possibly? A lot of her friends’ husbands also do that. Would he question where she’s going and what she's doing? Speaking of which; Jane just realised she was late for her luxury heel peel at MimisKru. Off she dashed to the salon which was only 5 mins from her home in the Arenal.
‘Hi Jane, come and take a seat at the foot spa.’ Said Jacqui, MimisKru’s new Scottish hairdresser/beautician, Jacqui specialised in heel peel pedicures, amongst other treatments; facials, cupping, massages and hairdressing. Heel peel pedicures were on offer at 25€, so Jane saw a great opportunity and booked the appointment online. It was the start of the summer and time to get them feet out. Jane suffered with calluses and cracked heels, so a regular pedicure helped to prevent the overload of hard skin which if she left the hard skin to grow it would then crack and bleed. The service involved no rough filing, just a simple application of a cold solution, duribland, onto cotton wool pads which are applied to the heel area or the areas with hard skin, left for 3 to 5 minutes depending on the thickness of the hardness. This works by breaking down the barrier between the dead and healthy skin. ‘So, Jane, I’m going to unwrap and take off the cotton pads and then use this metal spatula to scrape away your hard skin.’ Jane thought this was marvellous and so comfortable, certainly beat the foot scraper file or cheese grater most therapists use to remove hard skin. Soggy skin was scraped away, then her feet were soaked in the foot spa, washed, padded dry and then the toe work was next; filing of the nails, treating cuticles, finishing finally with an amazing foot and leg massage. ‘So Jane, what colour polish would you like?’ Naturally Jane went for red, her favourite colour. During her treatment all she could think about was the thought of Spencer coming home and staying home.
Whilst at the desk paying for her treatment, she picked up a gift voucher for her friend Joanne who is a diabetic and treated her also to the heel peel, knowing it was a safer option for diabetics.
Special offer: Luxury pedicure with heel peel and polish. 25€.

There’s No Need to Move to a Nursing Home!
Interview with Robert: ATERIMA CARE's Local Partner in the Costa Blanca
Robert, can you tell us about the inspiration behind bringing ATERIMA CARE to Costa Blanca?
Of course. My business partner Ania and I relocated to Xàbia over ten years ago and noticed that older residents here often consider moving to assisted living facilities. We believed there had to be a way for them to stay in their beloved homes.
How did you come across ATERIMA CARE?
We knew about ATERIMA CARE’s reputation in Germany for live-in care services. Seeing a similar need here, we decided to bring the same care to the Costa Blanca, helping people stay independent and comfortable in their own homes.
Who are the caregivers at ATERIMA CARE?
Our caregivers come from diverse educational backgrounds, all are experienced and passionate about helping others. They receive training at the Academy of Care, the educational department of ATERIMA CARE. Families consistently praise them for their dedication, kindness, and professionalism.
Can you share a story that shows how your caregivers make a difference?
Sure! One of our many remarkable caregivers, Teresa, once found out that the person she was looking after hadn’t celebrated his birthday in over a decade. She organised a surprise birthday party for him, bringing joy back into his life. Teresa is excellent at quickly adapting to routines, handling chores, preparing meals, and providing discreet personal care.
What languages do the caregivers speak?
We offer our services in English and German, with caregivers at various levels of communication skills. During the initial free consultation, we match the caregiver's language skills to the care recipient’s needs and provide recommendations.
What does live-in home care cost?
Costs vary based on services required and the caregiver's language skills. We determine the precise cost through a free consultation. Prices for comprehensive services start at 2,900 EURO per month.
What is the main advantage of live-in home care?
Our care recipients can stay in their own homes, keeping their independence and routines with personalised, one-on-one support. Unlike nursing homes, where they have to adapt to a new and unfamiliar environment, our care allows them to remain in the comfort of their own space. Our care is often comparable in cost to nursing homes, but having a dedicated caregiver like Teresa provides emotional and social benefits, helping them stay connected with friends and family.

Why whiten?
For just one moment, smile. Then think about it. That all-important grin is how you greet the world and your loved ones every day. Of course, it's also a big part of the first impressions you make. Studies prove that people with whiter teeth appear more confident, are more likely to be hired for jobs, and even enjoy better dates.
It is also true that if you are proud of your smile then you are likely to take more care over cleaning your teeth to maintain them that way. A high standard of oral hygiene creates the healthiest and most beautiful mouths.
So whitening isn't just about caring for your teeth. It's about feeling your best and living life accordingly.
Whitening your teeth does not mean that they will go neon white – although it is true that young teeth have more ability to go very white as their enamel is thicker than middle aged teeth. Indeed, the degree of whiteness can be directly controlled by you.
Some degree of sensitivity during, or just after whitening treatment, is normal and is temporary, usually settling after one or two days. This sensitivity usually means that you just take a break during the treatment before continuing.
When you see people on TV with extremely white teeth, actors for example, it is less attractive, but that level of whiteness is usually created with porcelain veneers or crowns, and cannot usually be caused by whitening alone. These overdone teeth don’t look natural, we agree, and most people just want their own natural teeth improved upon, which is what whitening can do for you.
Clinica Dental La Plaza is the answer
We recommend home whitening using a personalised mould of your teeth and the gel to go inside which is worn at night. You control how often you use the kit and how white you want your teeth to be.
Alternatively we can also offer power-whitening carried out in our clinic using strong bleaching peroxides for those who don't want the bother of doing home treatments.
Call us on 96 646 1120, we want to improve your oral health and an improved smile, we can give you the best advice and options. Come and see us for a free initial assessment.

It’s getting hot in
here ...so take off all your clothes!
Living on the Costa Blanca we are used to high summer temperatures but the last few years have seen some very high temperatures indeed. What we do need to be aware of are the health risks that such high temperatures bring, and one of these is heat exhaustion.
The symptoms of heat exhaustion may include heavy sweating and a rapid pulse, brought on by your body overheating. It is one of the three main heat-related conditions with heat cramps being the mildest, heat exhaustion being in the middle, and heatstroke being the most severe.
Heat exhaustion is caused by exposure to high temperatures, particularly when combined with high humidity, and strenuous physical activity combined with the body’s failure to cool itself.
Heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke if not treated promptly, which can be life-threatening.
Fortunately however, heat exhaustion is completely preventable, and treatable; the key is to knowing the signs and symptoms which include:
- Cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat
- Heavy sweating
- Faintness, dizziness or fatigue
- Weak, rapid pulse
- Low blood pressure upon standing
- Muscle cramps
- Nausea or headache
Besides hot weather and strenuous activity, other causes of heat exhaustion often include:
- Dehydration, which reduces your body’s ability to sweat and maintain a normal temperature
- Alcohol use, which can affect your body’s ability to regulate your temperature
- Overdressing, particularly in clothes that don’t allow sweat to
evaporate easily
What to do: if you are worried and think you may be suffering from heat exhaustion you should do the following:
- Rest in a cool place Getting into an air-conditioned building is best, but at the very least, find a shady spot or sit in front of a fan. Rest on your back with your legs elevated higher than your heart level.
- Drink cool fluids Stick to water or sports drinks. Don’t drink any alcoholic beverages, which can contribute to dehydration.
- Try cooling measures. If possible, take a cool shower, soak in a cool bath or put towels soaked in cool water on your skin.
- Loosen clothing Remove any unnecessary clothing and make sure your clothes are lightweight and nonbinding. Call your doctor if your symptoms worsen or if they don’t improve within one hour of using these treatment measures. If your body temperature reaches 104ºF (40ºC) or higher, you should seek immediate medical attention because you may need to be given intravenous (IV) fluids to help you rehydrate. However, for peace of mind, and just in case an ambulance is needed for any kind of heat related condition, or for any other medical emergency, it is wise to become a member of the
Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea (AAEdJ) Emergency Ambulance Service which covers almost all of Costa Blanca North and will speed one of their state-of-the-art ambulances (think mobile intensive care units) to you, wherever you are. For just €60 FOR THE YEAR for the WHOLE FAMILY this cover isn’t a ‘nice to have’....it is a ‘need to have’. More than just a funeral plan
White Doves was founded with a clear objective of providing support for families and their friends at the most difficult time of their lives, the loss of their loved ones.
Moira Carmenate, Founder and CEO of White Doves Funeral Planning believed there was a massive gap in the provision of bereavement support and practical support at that delicate time, and formed the company to deliver funeral services that went above and beyond.
This extensive and unique lifeline for families, available throughout Spain, has also led to the formation of White Doves Foundation, a charity which helps “reset lives” after trauma. Initially geared to helping people who suffered abuse, whether mental or physical, White Doves Foundation also incorporates helping people reset their lives following bereavement. Our door is open to anyone who needs help and support whether emotional or practical and a team of trained and qualified, empathetic volunteers are there to assist.
White Doves Funeral Planning also incorporates Later Life Planning with their inhouse Wills, Inheritance Tax Planning and Probate services alongside funeral planning which is tailored to the needs of families. As Moira says, it's “more than just a funeral plan”, we are with you every step of the way and support families even years after the death of a friend or family member. Ironically this level of service and support has never existed. Yes, there are funeral planning companies who take a call and point someone in the direction of a funeral director, but White Doves offers so much more. Why would you compromise the level of support for your family when they need it the most?
If you would like to ensure your family have peace of mind and ongoing support during what will be a difficult time, please contact us and we will be happy to help you find the best option that fits your budget and of course, your family’s needs.

OUR TRIBUTE TO JENNIFER CUNNINGHAM, A LEADING EXPAT
BUSINESS OWNER, AND A PHENOMENAL FORCE OF NATURE.
Jennifer Cunningham was one of a kind. Hard working, determined, disciplined and driven, she was also charming, funny, insightful, and unwaveringly supportive of her friends and family, her staff and of her clients.
At Female Focus Publications we worked with Jennifer for years, and we personally saw, heard and witnessed, how her no-nonsense approach gained her a cast-iron reputation of honesty and integrity.
Every reader of her plain-speaking monthly articles will know about her scathing attitude towards anything shabby, untoward, risky or uncertain. Jennifer would always take the exact opposite approach.
She would always advocate aiming high, and going for the best… attaining the best quality insurance and health care cover for her clients, training her staff to give the best service, and she strove to provide the most relevant and soundest information, with the aim of her clients having the best peace of mind.
Jennifer Cunningham unwittingly became a People’s Champion for fairness, clarity, trust and advice. And with the confirmation that her son Mark will take over Jennifer’s role, Jennifer’s legacy which has been carefully built up over the last 35 years is certain to continue.
And with the experienced staff all continuing working in the business, both the company and the charity ‘Paul Cunningham Nurses’ which she established after the death of her eldest son, Jennifer’s legacy will endure. Jennifer loved the company and the charity she founded, and providing help and service to the Expat Community.
Thank you Jennifer for your drive, wisdom and kindness. You were one of those people who made a difference, helping to make the lives of others easier, less complicated and more secure. For these and your many other skills, you will always be remembered.

GREAT MYTHS IN ASTRONOMY
Before I move on to some of the strange ideas that are often believed, I’ll give a quick update from last month’s column. I told about the expected Nova in the constellation Corona Borealis, it’s predicted to occur before the end of September this year. It hasn’t happened yet, so if anyone missed that article, you’ll find it on the Focus On website www.femalefocusonline.com.
It's always surprised me what people will believe, especially in the face of evidence, or giving a subject a little thought, so let’s start with a supremely obvious misconception, that people used to think the Earth was flat. NO, they didn't, in fact it’s over 2300 years ago since the size of the Earth’s globe was measured by a Greek (who else) called Eratosthenes. The fact that the Earth is round can be seen by anyone standing on a cliff, and looking at the sea’s horizon, it’s curved, try it for yourself. This myth probably originates with a song from years ago.
The next big one is that our moon has a dark side, no it doesn’t, that’s from a great album by Pink Floyd. The Moon does always show the same side towards us (almost) but that doesn’t mean that the other side is dark. In fact, if you think about how the Moon goes around the Earth and that the Earth is moving around the Sun it’s bound to get sunlight almost everywhere.
It’s often believed that our distance from the Sun causes the seasons. It’s easy to understand why someone would think this, but it’s wrong. The Earth is tilted over with respect to its path around the Sun by about 23 degrees, and it’s this that causes the seasons, and also why we have the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn on maps.
The Moon only appears at night! I’ve no idea why so many people say this, when so many of us have seen it’s almost ghostly image during the daytime. It’s also why we have nights without a Moon. Simply put, it always appears in a different part of the sky as it orbits us, and often it will be daytime when it is overhead.
Now for a few quick ones. A telescopes magnification is all important, wrong again. It’s how much light it can gather that matters. To see a galaxy you might only use 10x magnification, but you won’t see much without a big lens etc.
The Sun is not a star!!! Again, I’ve no idea why anyone should think this, but they do. Out star is a rather ordinary one and a very common type. It fits very nicely into something called the Hertzprung Russell diagram which us astronomy type use to classify different types of stars.
Last one because I'm running out of space (pun) is that amateur astronomers don’t contribute to science. They most definitely do, and always have, but that’s a big subject and will have to wait until next month.
One last thought for you, do flat Earthers believe in global warming?

Who is buying property on the Costa Blanca?
Nearly half of all property sales in the Alicante province have been snapped up by foreign buyers, attracted by its competitive prices, climate, culture and leisure opportunities.
The British are the main foreign home buyers in the region, accounting for 12% of house sales - about 2,500 properties - in 2023, according to the property register. And, according to Idealista, the British are looking for large properties near the coast and in the north of the Alicante region.
Although the British still hold the top spot for foreigners buying property (9.5%), this has fallen 1.54% from the previous year. Second place goes to the Germans (7.3%) and then the French (6.7%). Demand is increasing from Morocco, accounting for 5.4% of purchases, Belgium at 5.4% and Italy, 5.2%.
In all, 44% of property transitions on the Costa Blanca were sold to foreigners. Foreign demand for properties in Torrevieja remains high with areas such as Los Frutales and Playa del Cura being favourite spots, particularly with the Swedish market. The Orihuela Costa is another top choice for foreign investors, particularly the districts in and around Cabo Roig, La Zenia and Playa Flamenca. The portal report also shows that people from the Netherlands are interested in the exclusive residential area of Maryvilla, Calpe.
Top billing for desirable areas to live is Moraira, with demand from foreign buyers, particularly from the Netherlands, hitting a high of 65% in particular areas such as Moravit-Cap Blanc and the town centre.

Drought
As we face yet another summer with little rain this year, we really have to examine the fact that if you want a green space in your garden then you may have to use artificial grass as a much better environmental option. As a garden designer I have 2 things I would focus on right now as regards to gardens. Get trees in now and get artificial grass in. Look at starting to create your own oasis with tall trees and palms for shade and grass in the middle, artificial grass so you don’t need to over water the area and can keep watering your beautiful trees and other plants.
We are seriously starting to witness the desertification of our area and the truth is that establishing trees now will help keep your immediate garden microclimate more controlled, and without having to use irrigation on a lawn area can allow you to use a little more on general plants to create a beautiful oasis. The quantity of water required to water a garden versus a lawn area is hugely different. Lawns require thousands of litres per week whereas a garden full of plants will be much lower in water consumption.
I believe if we continue on this trajectory, it will become pretty much impossible to grow a lawn within the next few years. If you are in the position of creating a garden right now, please, please, don’t go thinking having a natural lawn is better for the environment as it isn’t and the last thing you want to do is install a natural lawn for someone to come and reduce your available water, meaning you can't water it anymore.
In general as part of the community everyone seriously needs to consider how much water they are using now.

CHICAS DODGE THE DELUGE
43 Chicas intended to enjoy their last meeting before the summer break outside under the sun shades at Casa Toni in Moraira.
But the threatening weather necessitated a swift change of plan, and the staff did a magnificent job of re-locating the whole big group inside. Luckily, as a bit later we watched smugly and safely through the big windows as the deluge happened. All credit to Toni's staff for re-arranging everything so smoothly at such short notice, and as usual to Lynn and her team for organising, then re-organising all the seating at the last minute. All we had to face then was a very slow, wet, careful journey home. Jan Adams
U3A MEMBERS CELEBRATE THE ARRIVAL OF SUMMER!
Over 100 guests enjoyed the summer ball held by the U3A Moraira-Teulada in the beautiful surroundings and ballroom of Salones Canor in June. The ladies dressed to impress, and the men also looked very smart!
The cava reception was held outside on a lovely balmy evening with entertainment provided by Duo Intermezzo. Afterwards there was a three-course meal followed by dancing. A wonderful time was had by all and many thanks to Coral Guise-Smith for her organisation.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF SKIN CANCER
As summer approaches, Cancer Care Javea would like to talk to you about skin cancer. It is crucial to be aware of the signs and symptoms, as early detection can greatly improve the chances of successful treatment. Here are some ways you might notice skin cancer:
1. Changing mole or spot: One of the most common indicators of skin cancer is a mole or spot on the skin that changes in appearance. Look for changes in size, shape, colour, or texture, as well as the development of irregular borders or uneven pigmentation.
2. New growth or sore: Pay attention to any new growths, bumps, or sores on the skin that do not heal within a few weeks. These could be signs of skin cancer, particularly very common basal cell or squamous cell carcinomas.
3. Asymmetry and irregular borders: Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, often presents as a mole or spot with an irregular shape and uneven borders.
4. Varied coloration: Melanomas may have multiple shades of brown, black, red, blue, or white within a single spot.
5. Diameter greater than 6 millimetres: Melanomas often have a diameter larger than the size of a pencil eraser (6 millimetres). We love living in the sun. But remember that ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the leading cause of skin cancer. UV rays can damage the DNA in skin cells, leading to genetic mutations that can cause uncontrolled cell growth and the development of cancerous tumours. Sun cream plays a vital role in protecting the skin by absorbing or reflecting these harmful UV rays, reducing the risk of sun damage and subsequent cancer development. Don't risk it! Lather up.
If you notice any skin changes or have concerns about a suspicious spot on your skin, it is essential to consult with a dermatologist or healthcare professional for a thorough examination and possible biopsy. Early detection and treatment of skin cancer can significantly improve outcomes and reduce the risk of the disease.
We have a weekly drop-in at our Cancer Care office in Javea. Please feel free to visit or call us on the following nurse number if you have concerns: +34 722 684 093.

Walk Your Way Well
with Niamh O'SheehanHello readers. Did you know I'm a positive psychology coach? I've been writing this article about the amazing benefits of walking for four years! But did I mention we walk in my coaching sessions? Walking coaching, also known as "walk-and-talk" coaching, is an increasingly popular approach that combines the benefits of physical movement with traditional coaching techniques. Here are several reasons why I just love walking coaching: Physical and Mental Health Benefits: Walking is a low-impact exercise that improves cardiovascular health, boosts energy levels, and enhances overall physical fitness. Physical activity, like walking, releases endorphins and other neurotransmitters that can improve mood, reduce stress, and enhance mental clarity. This can lead to more productive and insightful coaching sessions.
Natural Environment: Being outdoors and surrounded by nature can be calming and inspiring. This environment can help clients feel more relaxed and open, making it easier to discuss personal or challenging topics. A change of scenery from a typical office setting can foster creativity and new perspectives, aiding problem-solving and brainstorming.
Movement Facilitates Thought: Walking can stimulate cognitive processes, helping clients think more freely and creatively. The rhythmic nature of walking can also aid in organising thoughts and ideas. I like to call it "dynamic thinking". In a coaching session, I find walking very symbolic. Physically moving forward can represent progress and forward momentum, reinforcing the client’s journey towards their goals.
Enhanced Communication: Walking side-by-side can create a less confrontational and more egalitarian dynamic compared to face-to-face meetings. This can make clients feel more comfortable and open in discussing their issues. The informal setting and natural flow of walking can lead to more organic and fluid conversations, facilitating deeper and more authentic exchanges.
Practical and Flexible: Walking coaching can be easily integrated into busy schedules. It can be done during lunch breaks, in parks, or around office premises. It is a very versatile coaching method. It suits various coaching styles and topics, from personal development to career coaching and beyond.
Holistic Approach: We all love the mind-body connection. This approach recognises the interconnectedness of physical and mental health. By addressing both simultaneously, walking coaching offers a more holistic approach to personal development. Being outdoors and physically active can significantly reduce stress levels, which can help clients think more clearly and make better decisions.
In summary, walking coaching combines the benefits of physical activity, the calming effects of nature, and the effectiveness of traditional coaching. If you enjoy walking and you feel you need coaching to achieve some clarity about goals or to enhance motivation, I would love to connect with you. Drop me a line. Let's Walk 'n talk!

From artist inspiration to deadly flowers
Walking or driving around the Costa Blanca, you can not fail to enjoy the profusion of scented Oleander bushes that are at their best at this time of year.
Nerium oleander, more commonly known as oleander or rosebay, is native to a broad area that spans Morocco and Portugal before spreading eastward through the Mediterranean region. It flourishes around dry stream beds and grows to a height of between two and six metres usually.
The flowers grow in clusters and are typically white, pink or, sometimes, yellow.
The oleander does not have its own specific mythology but its origins can be traced back to ancient Greece. It was described by Plyny the Elder, the Roman author and naturalist (AD23- 79), who refers to its roselike flowers as well as its poisonous properties, in his writings. It is believed the oleander may also be the Rose of Jericho, described in the Bible.
This hardy plant was the first to bloom after the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, symbolising hope.
Although it is not commonly known, the oleander is very poisonous and should never be ingested. Every part of the plant contains toxic compounds. Fortunately, the bitterness of all parts of the plant is an effective deterrent to humans and most animals. The beautiful oleander blossoms must look tempting to bees, but they fool their would be pollinators with empty promises of nectar; theirblooms contain none.
In 1808, during the Spanish war of independence, it is reported that a number of Napoleon’s soldiers decided to roast their lamb dinner on oleander skewers. The toxicity of the branches was so intense that several of them subsequently died, according to historic record.
Oleander stems, presumably following special treatments, are sometimes used in elaborate basket weaving, a prevalent art form in the Costa Blanca. Interestingly, the ash from burned oleander wood is used by the gun powder industry. The powdered stems and leaves can also be used as rat poison and to prevent disease in certain crops, including beans and chick peas.
However, it is not all gloom and despondency on the oleander front. Traditionally, the leaves were made into a compound to combat hair loss and dandruff. In the Costa Blanca area it was once frequently used as a component in tonics for the cardio vascular system.
In certain areas of Almeria, Valencia and Murcia oleander leaves are still favoured by the older generation as mouthwash; a cure for toothache or as an aid for insomnia. In the Valencia community, its finely ground leaves are used as a remedy to control excessive sneezing.
The beautiful blooms of the oleander have inspired numerous artists throughout the years. In the opinion of Van Gogh, who famously painted oleanders in a majolica jug in Arles 1988, they were ‘joyous, life affirming flowers’. So, much like a leopard, a sleek sports car or even a good malt whisky, although beguiling and even bewitching, beware of its dangerous side.

La Nucía goes back to the Middle Ages
On 5, 6 and 7 July the old town of La Nucía becomes again a medieval world to commemorate the signing of the town charter on the 9th of July in 1705. This market has been held since 2005 and this year includes a medieval encampment, knight combats, belly dancing, medieval characters, minstrels, fire shows, craft demonstrations with workshops.
More than forty authentic artisans have booked a space to sell their own work. The square in front of the Town Hall and the surrounding streets will be filled with stalls with a wide variety of authentic crafts: ceramics and pottery, glass, designer jewellery, carved wood and marquetry, handmade soaps and perfumes, wooden and soft toys, beautiful lamps, gnomes and marionettes, and much more. This year a stonemason is setting up a workshop with 4 seats, where both children and adults can learn the first steps of this craft and the potter invites the public to make their own bowl on the wheel.
In the gastronomic corner we will find food stalls: artisan cheeses and sausages, nuts, jams and sweets, artisan chocolate, as well as a medieval tavern, a "pulpería" (where you can eat real octopus) and a tea tent that also sells Arabic food. And while parents regain their strength there, children can have fun with board games or have a ride on the mythological carrousel.
A small encampment is set up again in the Plaza de San José that offers ample space for medieval combat demonstrations and archery and fencing workshops. To complete the medieval atmosphere, minstrels, knights, a belly dancer, a jester, beggars and other medieval characters will walk through the streets and corners of the market, perform some historical reenactment and close the market every night with a great fire show.
The market is an initiative of the Department of Festivals and Tourism. The councillor, Mr. Cristóbal Lloréns, has once again awarded the organisation of the event to Amata (Association for the Improvement of Traditional and Modern Crafts), which, as its name indicates, is dedicated to the promotion of crafts, and requires that all what you can see in its markets is handmade by the same artisans who serve you. In this way the public knows that in all the stalls they will find "Artesanía de Autor®".
The Market will be set up in the oldest part of the village, around the Town Hall and will open to the public on Friday the 5th, Saturday the 6th and Sunday the 7th of July from 6pm until midnight (or later...). There is ample (free) parking in the Auditorio de les Nits car park, 100 meters from the market and in a large open-air car park, just behind the old town. The complete programme of the market you'll find at https://www.puebloartesano.es/lanucia.
Celebrating Van Gogh's greatest hits
Art lovers have an opportunity to get up close and personal with the vibrant works of Van Gogh at the Van Gogh ‘Greatest Successes’ immersive exhibition at the IFA centre, near Alicante airport, until September 15. The exhibition takes you on a journey through the art, life and imagination of the great Dutch artist. Thanks to Digital Art 360 technology, viewers feel as though they are getting inside the paintings, which they see on giant screens. Vincent Van Gogh’s art is ideal for big screen viewings, thanks to his use of intense colours in works such as the iconic Sunflowers and The Starry Night. He was a prolific artist producing hundreds of paintings, which are among the most expensive works on the art market. His original works are on display in the largest and most important museums and galleries in the world, as well as in the hands of private collectors.
This exhibition is a chance to see his best-known and most expensive works in the same place and in a completely new way as his art is accompanied by light, colour and sound. It will guide you through his art as well as his life, revealing his habits, secrets and personal suffering.
Despite being renowned as one of the world's greatest artists, it is widely reported that Van Gogh only sold one painting, The Red Vineyard, during his lifetime. However, his Uncle Cor, who was an art dealer, commissioned him to create cityscapes of The Hague, as a way of supporting his nephew. Van Gogh also gave his work to other artists in exchange for food or painting materials. Today, when his work does come on the market, it sells for millions - Orchard with Cypresses sold for $117 million in 2022.

Denia Rock Choir Sings for Charity
The Denia Rock Choir delivered an electrifying performance at the Casa de Cultura in Denia on May 16, captivating an audience of 160 music enthusiasts. The concert featured an eclectic mix of songs, including the classic "Paint it Black" and the contemporary hit "Flowers," showcasing the choir's versatile talent and passion for music. The event was not only a musical success but also raised 920€ for the local charity Extiende Tu Mano, an organisation dedicated to supporting local individuals in need. Run entirely by volunteers, the charity provides essential services to those in need within the Denia community. Their efforts include supplying hot meals, food packages, and clothing to individuals
and families facing hardship. The donation was formally handed over last month by the choir’s committee members to Adany, a representative of Extiende Tu Mano. "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who participated and supported our concert," said the choir director Aileen Lightfoot. The Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir presented its charity Summer Concerts in the Caves to standing ovations and loud appreciative acclamation. The choir sang new songs and old favourites, and even sang in Welsh. The choir's in-house A Capella sextet, AdHoc, performed a complex arrangement of Mr Blue Sky with panache and precision. Young guest performers Florrie and Jasmijn impressed with their mature interpretations of songs from Chess. The encore was a resounding lively rendition Rhythm of Life. The choir will resume regular rehearsals in September, but do continue on a more casual basis through summer. Jávea Players: Their autumn production – 18th - 23rd November – is 'The Long Road'. It was written by Shelagh Stephenson as part of a collaboration with prisoners in theatre workshops. Danny is fatally injured in a random attack. His mother's determination to understand the atrocity brings her face to face with his killer and forces the family to confront the bitter senselessness of their loss. It is a gritty, emotional, thought-provoking and darkly humorous play.
