British brands Barbour and Specsavers join forces to launch exclusive collection

Specsavers has partnered with British heritage lifestyle brand Barbour to launch an exclusive collection of optical and sunglasses frames and this collection is now available in all six Specsavers Ópticas stores on the Costa Blanca.

With a fresh twist on classic shapes, the collection is inspired by Barbour’s modern countryside style and features colours and patterns inspired by the great British outdoors.

The new collection features 13 optical frames and 3 sunglasses for both men and women, as well as 4 kids frames. Each perfectly encapsulates the brand’s iconic style and timeless look. The premium crafted and durable designs take cues from Barbour’s renowned wax jackets through the understated use of tartan and houndstooth prints in a variety of timeless eyewear shapes.

The Barbour story began in 1894 in the coastal town of South Shields in the North East of England when founder John Barbour began selling oilskins to the mariners and fishermen to protect them from the worst of the British weather. Today, Barbour is a 5th generation family-owned global lifestyle business providing outerwear, clothing, accessories and footwear for men, women and children and remains true to its founding values of quality, durability, attention to detail and fitness for purpose.

Commenting on the collection, Specsavers Style Editor Bianca Swan said: “We’re so excited to welcome Barbour into our portfolio of designer brands.

Off the back of the popularity of quiet luxury trends in 2023, we’re now seeing a rise in the country core aesthetic. This is characterised by a focus on tradition and timeless quality, we feel there’s a clear synergy between both the Barbour and Specsavers brands.

With the launch of this collection, we hope to bring Barbour’s classic countryside style to the urban high-street, so that every customer can find a style to suit them.”

David Godfrey, Regional Manager Distributor Markets, EMEA & Licensing, Barbour “We are delighted to partner with Specsavers on this eyewear collection which perfectly captures the heritage of Barbour. It incorporates our classic British style in textures and patterns synonymous with Barbour, reimagined for everyday wear from the city to the country.”

All adult frames in the Barbour range are priced at €159, meanwhile kids' frames are priced at €89. The Barbour collection is now available in Specsavers Ópticas stores in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia. Direct Cremation Plan Option

Jennifer Cunningham Insurances are pleased to be able to now provide a Direct Cremation Plan, which provides everything you need at a lower cost. Our clients have been requesting this alternative for some time as a combination of both cost of living rises and social changes, which has resulted in our requirements for funerals to alter.

The Direct Cremation plan includes everything necessary for an unattended cremation and provides all the paperwork required.

Especially for the Expats and their families, funerals can be a very stressful and complicated experience. When you purchase a funeral plan, you are making the whole process far easier and less stressful for your loved ones.

Prices are fixed, with either full payment or with a deposit and a payment schedule of up to 60 months, which is interest free. There is no medical required, no health restrictions and no limit on age.

In Spain, the funeral usually happens very quickly after death, which can be frightening and daunting for your family members to deal with. I cannot understand why you would not organise this, to help your loved ones at this very difficult time.

One phone call and the plan goes into operation. There is a choice of four plans, and all the documentation required is included.

If you decide that a funeral plan is not for you, you must make sure that your wishes are known, money is available immediately and that at least one of your loved ones has an NIE number. In line with Spanish law, direct cremation usually takes place 24-72 hours after death and prolonging this will incur extra mortuary expenses.

Death is always traumatic and exhausting – why make it even harder for those left behind. If you would like more information or a quotation, please contact one of my offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.

I am not quite sure what happened to May, it passed so quickly with so much packed into one month.

It was lovely to catch up with so many advertisers and readers at the Homes, Gardens and Lifestyle Show. If you didn't make it and haven't picked up the latest copy of Professional Services magazine then you can find it at all the usual distribution points along the Marina Alta. June is looking as though it will be another busy one as there is so much happening this month - make sure you have your diaries open before you continue reading the magazine.

Darling daughter has volunteered me to help at the school on the last day of term. Apparently I am doing glitter tattoos. Fortunately, as my art skills are shocking, there are templates the children choose and I just apply the glitter. I remember the first time I helped when she started school in Andalucia, and now here I am doing it for the grandchildren. Where does the time go?

As it is getting closer to summer, once again I ask you all to have patience when out and about as everywhere is getting busier. Keep your wits about you and enjoy yourselves. Until next time, take care and be kind.

Pick up your next issue on 2 July. Deadlines: Editorial & Advertising - 17 June.

Extracts from the brief memoirs of ALAN BOWERS - the life of an ordinary soldier who served in WWII

Elaine Hibbert is the daughter of Alan Bowers, her daughter Claire Walker and her husband Darren own the La Palmera Lounge Bar in Orba. Claire, a huge supporter of the Royal British Legion held a hog roast on 21st April in aid of RBL Jávea, raising an incredible 1228.32€.

Claire introduced me to Elaine Hibbert, her mother who briefly told me the story of her father Alan Bowers and his survival of D Day and WWII.

This is a short extract from the brief memoirs of ALAN BOWERSthe life of an ordinary soldier who served in WWII provided by his daughter Elaine Hibbert.

Alan Bower, was born in September 1923 and volunteered for the army as soon as he was old enough to join, encouraged by his father, who served in both World Wars and his two older brothers who had also joined up. This prompted an article in the “Ashton Reporter” (Manchester) entitled “The Fighting Bowers”. After initial training, in September 1942, he was transferred to the 7th Battalion The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment and whilst on leave in September 1943 he met my wonderful mother, Sylvia (from Chesterfield). He wrote to her throughout the war and just managed a total of 10 days of leave before they married in March 1945. Here, in his own words, are his memories of D-Day:

“In early June 1944 I boarded a large troopship “The Empire Newton” at Tilbury with my section in a small convoy as an advance party to set up positions for the Battalion. At about 5am we were mustered on deck and told to go down the scrambling nets which I had done before but not in a six foot swell! We then sped off towards Juno beach, Normandy alongside the Canadians. As we approached I was deafened by the gunfire. The RAF were plastering the beaches, the Royal Navy were using their heavy artillery. I recall that the

“Rodney”, “Warspite” and “Nelson” were the three battleships there plus many destroyers. All hell was let loose! As we went in, I looked over the side of the craft and exclaimed “My God!”. There was no sea, only ships! About 200 yards offshore, the front of the craft dropped and we jumped. I cheered as we were only in 2 feet of water. However a short distance further we ran into a runnel which made the water much deeper. My Mae West came in handy to keep me and my Bren Gun from drowning. Just then two Messerschmidts came over and started machine gunning us and a few minutes later we saw the RAF blast them out of the skies. The mines had been cleared by the Engineers so we got ashore fairly easily and without casualties. We moved inland about 500 yards and dug in and waited for 3 days when the rest of the Battalion arrived. “

In his memoirs he ends by saying: “That was five years out of my life and although there was sadness, heartaches, scares, horrific sights and loss of life, I still look back on that period very fondly because of the comradeship that was shared. Surely those five years were longer than that? I salute all my comrades who gave their lives and the others who were wounded fighting for what they believed in - that the world would be a better place.”

Corporal Alan Bowers. 23-9-1923 to 27-11-2008

Alan was moved to write a short poem at Christmas time in 1944 which was published in the Battalion newspaper. "Christmas with thy peaceful homeliness, Awakened by destructiveness, 'Ti's time to sleep and make anew

The chimes of Christmas deeper true.

Ring out! Ring out! Ye bells of peace

And let thy chimes no longer cease."

The B&W photo is of Corporal Alan Bowers and his wife Sylvia. The photo in La Palmera Lounge Bar Orba is of Alan's Daughter Elaine, granddaughter Claire & great-granddaughter Lucie.

Financial Advice from our family to yours

4 considerations for your investment portfolio

The first half of this year has flown by so we thought it worthwhile to recap on four key elements that will give any investment the best chance to prosper in 2024. The considerations we delve into below are important at any point in life but especially in times of increased market uncertainty, like we have experienced in the past few years.

 Investment strategy: What is your chosen investment objective? Are you looking for income, capital growth, or a combination of the two? Do you have a preference for active or passive management? What is your time horizon for investing?

Tip: It is important to know why you are investing and what you are looking to achieve with your money. Those that rely on income from their portfolios will generally take a lower-risk, shorter-term view to investing, whilst those not reliant on income and looking for capital growth only can generally afford to take more risk, with a longer timeframe in mind.

 Risk: How much risk are you prepared to take to meet your objectives? How much risk do you need to take? Have you completed a recent risk profile assessment with your adviser? Have your underlying funds been reviewed to ensure they remain in line with your attitude to risk?

Tip: It is very easy for a portfolio to stray from its originally intended risk if left unmonitored. There is also a key discussion to be had between the risk an investor is prepared to take and the risk an investor will need to take in order to meet their objectives. An in-depth risk analysis of a portfolio and cashflow modelling (backed up by numbers) can help demonstrate this.

 Cost: Are you aware of the cost implications associated with your portfolio, both for the provider and underlying funds? Do you understand how this can significantly affect the net return you see on your portfolio over the long-term? Are you locked into a charging structure with your current provider for “x” number of years?

Tip: You may be surprised to learn that the price you pay for holding an identical investment product can differ significantly depending on which financial adviser you use. Whilst a difference in yearly fees of say, 0.50%p.a. may seem innocuous at outset… it can have a massive impact on the net returns an investor would see over the long-term. Pay special attention to the costs of the product and underlying funds, as the last thing an investor wants is to be achieving a reasonable gross return but seeing half of it swallowed up in fees.

 Communication: Have you had conversations with your adviser on the 3 points already mentioned above? Are you kept updated on a regular basis? Do you find it easy to contact your adviser and/or investment provider?

Tip: Transparency and regular contact are key factors in establishing and maintaining an effective client/ adviser relationship. Having one point of contact and knowing who you are dealing with lends itself to building a solid relationship based on a firm level of trust. At Logic, we pride ourselves on our award-winning client service and as a family-run business, our clients know who they are dealing with at all times. We regularly run client portfolio reviews and can help clients understand the risks and costs associated with their investments, ensuring they are in the most suitable position to achieve their financial ambitions.

Let’s delve into the fascinating world of Telomeres

and DNA Methylation relating to ageing.

Telomeres are protective caps at the ends of our chromosomes, like the plastic tips on shoelaces to stop them from fraying. As we age, telomeres naturally shorten due to cell division and other factors. This shortening is associated with cellular ageing and various health conditions, such as an increased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and a shorter lifespan. However, there is no universally agreed-upon standard for what constitutes a “healthy” telomere length based on age.

DNA Methylation is an epigenetic modification where a methyl group is added to specific DNA sequence. These biomarkers can determine the biological age of any tissue across the entire human lifespan, even during periods of development. Epigenetic age acceleration (measured through DNA methylation) is strongly linked to common diseases and can occur in response to environmental factors. DNA methylation-based clocks serve as biomarkers for early disease risk, life expectancy, and mortality prediction.

Epigenetic Clocks: are based on DNA methylation patterns, estimating biological age more accurately than chronological age, predicting life expectancy and disease risk. Prospective study designs are crucial for identifying and confirming epigenetic biomarkers of disease.

Bunions or HAV?

Advantages of Minimal Incision Surgery:

The Bunion or Hallux Valgus is a deformity of the foot caused by a deviation of the first toe towards the middle axis of the foot and a deviation of the first metatarsal towards the outer edge of the foot accompanied by irregular bone growth in the first metatarsal head and articular incongruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This causes pain due to inflammation of the soft tissues of the area from constant friction against footwear and from the structural and mechanical alteration due to the bone deviation. When is it recommended to operate on bunions?

It is recommended to operate on bunions when they are painful, when osteoarthritis appears or the structural deformity affects walking correctly which in turn affects other levels of the locomotor system. It is also advisable to perform surgery in cases in which as a result of the bunion, the toes are deforming like when the second toe appears hammer-like. When a patient wishes to undergo an operation a professional should study each case individually, taking into account the age, health status, lifestyle ... etc. At Portalet Clinic, we will explain in detail and alleviate any worries without compromise.

What type of technique is carried out at Clinica Podológica Portalet?

We perform minimum incision surgery. As its name suggests, it is done using minimal skin incisions, usually 2 to 4mm. Through these millimetric incisions we can reach the soft tissues and bone, without causing injury to the adjacent tissues.

- Immediate recovery as the procedure is minimal. - The patient walks away with a post-surgical shoe without crutches or help.

- After just 48 hours the patient can continue life as normal.Almost painless. - No fixing bolts or needles used. One of the drawbacks of open surgery is the use of fixing materials, with Minimal Incision Surgery fixations are not necessary as the soft tissues themselves, which we have respected, the joint capsule and a light dressing are responsible for this. - Local anesthetic, only affecting the foot, so the dose used is less.No hemostasia (restriction of blood flow). As the size of the incision is so small, there is little bleeding so there is no need for a tourniquet, thus avoiding all risks of cutting blood flow. - Less risk of infection. The small size of the incisions also decreases the risk of infection. - Barely visible scaring.

Halitosis - Bad Breath

“A bad mood is like bad breath. Both are wrong to inflict onto others”

Bad breath, also called halitosis, usually isn’t life threatening, but it can certainly be embarrassing if it is strong enough for others to notice, and if it persists then the cause should be investigated.

Poor oral hygiene

The most common cause of bad breath and bad teeth is poor oral hygiene causing a build-up of natural bacteria (in a sticky film called plaque) on your teeth. If not brushed away, plaque can irritate your gums causing inflammation and easy bleeding on brushing.

Plaque causes tooth decay, also known as cavities or caries. Holes or damage in the tooth enamel is where bacteria can harbour and grow and cause infection leading to toothache, sensitivity, infection, or tooth loss.

Cavity or gum disease

The early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. Late-stage gum disease with bone loss is called periodontitis and caused by infection and inflammation of the gums due to these bacteria, and bad breath that refuses to go away can be one of the early symptoms of gum disease.

Dentures also can collect odour-causing bacteria and food particles, as can fixed or removable oral appliances such as braces that aren't cleaned regularly or don't fit properly.

Good oral hygiene can be learned.

Initial treatment may be done by a dentist or a periodontist (a dentist who specialises in gum disease) or a dental hygienist. Your treatment plan will be bespoke according to your particular problem.

The goal of the treatment is to thoroughly clean the pockets around the teeth and prevent damage to the surrounding gum tissue and bone. Successful treatment depends on a daily routine of good oral care, such as brushing your teeth at least twice a day, and interdental cleaning. The dentist, periodontist or hygienist will ensure that you know, and practice, how to properly undertake the oral care routine.

Always Improving, Always getting better, For Your Safety

Our Brand New Ambulance has arrived

In line with legislation, and to always improve our service to our patients, once again we have purchased, converted and equipped a state-of-the-art new ambulance.

Sounds simple? Well actually, for a whole variety of reasons, it isn't! The licences and permissions required are complicated, extremely time consuming, and equipping the ambulance has been very expensive. But doing all of this is very important to keep our fleet of ambulances up to the very best standard for your safety.

We receive no Ayuntamiento or Government funding. Yes you will have seen us partaking in some commercial activities where we charge to supply our ambulance services to the local fiestas, concerts, sporting and public events, but essentially we exist by relying on the annual €60 fee paid by our members, and also upon other donations.

The total estimated cost of a new ambulance is around the €100,000 mark. Roughly two thirds of this is for the vehicle and its conversion. The other third is for the incredible amount of life saving equipment that we need to carry. As a quick example, we need to carry 5 different types of stretchers, neck, head, and joint braces etc to cope with all the different types of neck/spinal/other skeletal injury that someone could sustain.

One type of back stretcher is in two halves and is slid underneath the patient and fixes together. In extreme cases where it is very important that the patient should be completely immobilised, an inflatable stretcher might be used, this inflates around the person, and prevents them from moving at all.

So if you are reading this article and are connected with any Charity, Organisation, or Group who could help us with the purchase of another piece of equipment for our ambulance fleet, please can you bring this article to the attention of your Treasurer or whoever is responsible for your fundraising. The purchase of a piece of equipment could be lifesaving, all year round, and for many years to come.

See our advert on this page for the full list of the benefits of our service. Membership of the ASOCIACION AMIGOS EUROPEOS DE JAVEA is just €60 for a whole year for the whole family living at your home. This is incredible value for this really important service which can mean the difference between life and death. Sharper and tighter jawline

Threads, HIFU, Radiesse, filler and Kybella.

Self conscious about your profile view?

Do you lift your chin up in photos hoping to hide a jowly jawline and wrinkly neck?

If you are looking for a non surgical way to turn back the clock, then this year’s fastest growing anti aging treatment could be the answer.

APTOS THREADS

The new latest generation Aptos threads are an easy way to smooth wrinkles and tighten sagging skin in the face and neck without going under the knife.

We’ve seen a huge increase in the number of enquiries about new generation thread lifts and it’s estimated to be the biggest cosmetic treatment this year.

The procedure involves inserting threads into the skin which are pulled tight, lifting the skin and underlying muscle to create a tighter, smoother and jowl free complexion.

As the threads dissolve naturally, the skin starts to produce more collagen and elastin which gives a longer lasting result. The threads are inserted through a tiny incision in the skin so there is no scarring after treatment.

HIFU

If you are looking for a completely natural option and gradual solution to keeping a tight jawline, then HIFU Ultherapy could be your method of choice.

HIFU stands for high intensity focused ultrasound, it is a non

surgical, clinically proven technology for lifting and tightening the face, neck and décolletage. It works by naturally stimulating the production of collagen for a younger looking appearance.

RADIESSE

Radiesse, a filler made of calcium hydroxyapatite can be used to stretch lax skin in the cheek area, pulling up the jowls.

It can be injected in the jawline to make it sharp and chiselled to give absolutely perfect and stunning results.

KYBELLA

Finally, sometimes the jowls and the excess folds in the neck are not skin but fat. Kybella can be injected to dissolve fat and so make the jowls disappear in a matter of 6 to 12 weeks.

The Saga of a Spray Tan

Chapter 1

‘Hi Jane,’ called out Brenda, ‘where are you off to?’

‘Morning Brenda, I’m just off to Mimiskru for my spray tan, Spencer is home tomorrow, so I must look my best.”

‘Oh lovely, he’s still working away?’

‘Yes, sadly, this is his last year. Then he retires.’

‘Well, have a nice day.’

Off Jane sped to Mimiskru, which was perfectly located near to where she lived, in the Arenal, Jávea.

Jane always treated herself to a luxury once a month at Mimiskru, whether it was her nails, hair, pedicure, facial, or a spray tan. It was springtime, so she was pale skinned and wanted that boost of colour before she started to expose her body in bikinis & summer dresses. Her appearance was important to her, she had lost weight and was focused on looking after herself.

Jane entered Mimiskru and was welcomed by Linette, a very attractive-looking girl from Zimbabwe. She was escorted to the salon's spray tan room. Here, she stripped off to her underwear.

‘Did you exfoliate Jane?’ Linette asked whilst applying Vaseline to her knuckles, knees and heels, to prevent her creases of skin from looking patchy.

‘Yes, I did it this morning in the shower.’

‘Perfect, I’ll just apply this to your eyebrows, and then if you can put the sticky foot patches on and step into the tent, did you want to take your bra off? Linette asked whilst applying the hairnet to Jane’s head and hair.

‘Actually, I will, I don’t want tan-lines.’

‘Jane, can you hold out your arms like an aeroplane please, and stand with your legs apart, perfect’.

Starting from the top of the legs, Linette began to spray Jane’s body in downwards strokes to achieve an even all over tan.

‘Now we’re going to do your face. Hold your breath and please close your eyes.’ Linette applied a fine mist of spray over Jane's face. ‘All done. Now stand and dry for 5 mins. Then pop your clothes on.’

Luckily Jane had remembered to wear loose clothing, so as not to smudge the tan whilst drying.

‘So Jane, what do you think? I only applied 1 application, as I used the medium strength.’

‘It’s perfect, I know I’ll get browner as the tan develops, won’t I? 6 hours development time, wasn’t it?’

‘Yes, that’s right. So, that’s just 28€, please Jane. Enjoy having Spencer home.’

‘Thank you I will.’

Sadly, Spencer didn’t return home till the following week, but he had a surprise to tell Jane.

To be continued…

A new venue for U3A Calpe was visited for the first time in May for our monthly meeting. YODEL proved an excellent venue and was appreciated by our members. Kath Bailey, a former nurse, was our guest speaker and she had everyone laughing at her very amusing stories. Bookings were taken for trips planned and even Christmas was mentioned.

Kenny from Kenny’s Cabaret, very kindly lent us a sound system so everyone could hear.

U3A’s next visit to YODEL is a pre Wimbledon themed evening on the 18 June.

Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Microsoft has announced its intention to discontinue free support for Windows 10 starting October 2025.

Millions of Windows 10 users face a new challenge as Microsoft has announced its intention to end free support for the operating system. Users now have to choose between opting for Windows 11 systems or paying an annual subscription fee for Extended Security Updates (ESU) to continue using Windows 10. This financial limitation is expected to affect a substantial share of the user base, considering Windows 10 holds approximately 60% of the market share. We will keep you updated on this subject. The Whispering Orange Blossoms by Siggi Rutherford

A Bittersweet Family Tale of Tears and Sunshine

Embark on a riveting journey through the pages of this remarkable book, where tragedy intertwines with the uproarious antics of two unwittingly hilarious granddaughters.

A poignant true story unfolds against the backdrop of a sun-soaked Spanish coastal town, where an eclectic blend of English, Scottish, German, Dutch, and Spanish heritage weaves a vibrant tapestry of family dynamics.

Navigate the labyrinth of their lives as the family and the girls grapple with the indescribable pain of early loss, and weather the storm of a global financial credit crash that uproots their world.

For over a decade, the astute observations of a loving Grandmother, meticulously chronicled in diary format, capture the highs and lows of this international family.

This heartfelt and honest account delves into the nuances of their multinational upbringing, showcasing the resilience of the human spirit amid colossal family changes. Witness their mental and physical evolution painted with strokes of humour, warmth, and a dash of local colour.

A tale brimming with love, laughter, and tears, this narrative resonates with anyone who has experienced the rollercoaster ride of raising children, from the tender years to the tumultuous teenage stage.

Brace yourself for an emotional rollercoaster that is as unforgettable as it is relatable.

About the Author:

The Author, Siggi Rutherford died on 11th March 2024, after having completed this diary in the latter part of 2023.

Her husband, Malcolm, married Siggi in 1965 whilst serving in The Royal Air Force in Germany.

“It is with respect and admiration I salute my wife for her tenacity and determination in completing her diary whilst extremely ill over the last few months.” Malcolm Rutherford

Preface:

Words are an important part of life, especially during childhood. This book was created from years of diary entries in the hope the words in this book can remind everyone of the priceless moments in time spent with their family and friends and especially children, siblings and grandchildren.

Recalling children’s normal growing pains, eager to fit into the grown-up, complicated world around them, each in their individual and innocent way. Time flies by and scatters the memories of moments that would hurt so much if they were forgotten. And out of the mouths of babes come some very funny and interesting things.

This book and its diary logs are about two sisters who grew up in Spain with the fragrance orange blossom heavy in the air. The time they spent in their little orchard, becoming aware of the lilt of happy voices, and fulfilling the scope of their creative imagination.

From naturally competing with each other and anyone else around, revelling initially in everything that moves, squeaks or sparkles to discussing the differences of their own opinions and challenging everything around them.

They listened to the buzz of the industrious, energetic bees, darting from blossom to blossom, avoiding the barbs, and resting on the shiny leaves of the ever-changing orange trees, harmonising with the ever-present chattering cicadas, which created a magical soundtrack to the sisters’ daily adventures. The girls were born three years apart into a large European family circle, who had decided to make their home in Spain.

This book documents and treasures their encounters while exploring their surroundings, from the mountains to the sea, from play parks to historic buildings, and eventful journeys to their other roots in Scotland, England, Germany and Holland. Their journey was destined to be life-changing with obstacles, challenges and wonderous milestones along the way.

All events are based on truth and re-told with a little bit of poetic licence, a good dash of local colour, a lot of humour and most of all lots of love and guidance.

HOT!

A constant message we get on our social media channels when prospective clients are interested in artificial grass is other people saying it gets unbearably hot in Sunlight.

I find this is a personal interpretation of a possible interaction with the product and secondly it makes it sound like that’s whenever the sun is out, which is incorrect, or certainly with our product.

The reason why I say it’s a personal interpretation is what you class as hot could be different to another person, the other aspect to that is you don’t know what grass product it is and or where it was manufactured, its constructional materials and therefore that particular grasses reaction to heat. Different products made in different places and out of different materials will react differently to heat. And when people say in sun, well again this is a variable statement.

As much as I am a designer by trade, a creative person throughout my life, I am also a scientist with a BSc degree, and therefore I like facts. There are a whole lot of people out there who make speculative statements and don’t actually have any facts. They are statements designed to shock and disturb and don’t actually state any facts, reasons or rational, something you cannot do when you are a scientist. So here are some facts.

When my clients ask if the artificial grass gets hot, I say yes it does. But, only in the peak of summer and only during the peak hours of the day. I’m sorry to say this, but anyone who says it burns their dog's paws, why have you got your dog out, in the middle of the summer sun, in the middle of the heat of the day. Because that’s the only time our grass is hot to touch. This is the moment where I have to point out that anything in the direct summer midday sun gets hot, unbelievably hot, it doesn’t matter if it's timber decking, natural stone, concrete, sand, tile the list is endless. The rest of the time it is warm when in the summer and sun, but it’s a beautiful and comforting warm, which is why so many pets do love it. Our grass also dissipates heat extremely quickly, if a cloud comes over, unlike all the aforementioned materials it will go cooler in a matter of almost seconds, certainly minutes. Our Spanish grass manufacturer actually boasts cool technology. The simple fact is that if the grass is a good quality, safe product from Europe then it will not get as hot as some sub-standard products.

The other big thing about the grass is that if you have any shade from trees, palms etc then the grass is beautiful. So, this is a big reason why we always integrate our artificial grass into a garden space, to maximise its natural effect, create more spaces for shade and also to still allow wildlife to thrive in the borders and planted areas.

There is a lot of noise about artificial grass and as a scientist I look at the facts and when you start to add up the true facts, I am more and more absolute about how it is a great product, especially for use in the area in which we live.

Local Firefighting heroes

Summer approaches and with it, the ever-present threat of outbreaks of fire. Unfortunately, we have already had isolated outbreaks around our area. The earth is parched and prone to every spark and discarded cigarette end. Smoke was reported in the late morning of Saturday 13th April in the area of Camí Vell de Gata –Barranc de l’Hedra on the border between the municipalities of Xàbia and Gata de Gorgos. Fire-fighting units, including air assets, were quickly deployed.

The intensity of the fire, which was burning on two different fronts, forced the closure of several roads while overhead, at least three helicopters and two planes were depositing water and red fire suppressant on the flames below.

By late afternoon, the fire had reached the area of La Rana de Gata de Gorgos, pushed by winds and encouraged by the high temperatures making it difficult to control and extinguish the flames. However, thanks to gargantuan efforts, the spread was halted and, although the land remains burned, blackened and scarred, nobody was injured and thankfully, our local very ancient olive tree survived.

Generally, the Costa Blanca area is kept safe by the dedication of an army of firefighter volunteers. Yes, all the people who work so hard, fighting to keep the area safe from fire are unpaid volunteers.

In the past, this selfless, dedicated band of heroes Xàbia has faced many large fires. In 2016, a huge blaze near Xàbia led to the destruction of more than 20 homes, displacing around 2000 people. This fire ravaged more than 800 hectares and destroyed more than 20 homes between Xàbia and Granadella.

In recognition of the work of these brave volunteers, (Voluntarios in Spanish or firefighters in English), local charities in the area contribute to their funding.

Towards the end of last year, the local charity Todos Juntos Xàbia donated around two and a half thousand euro to this worthy and essential cause. The funding was used to upgrade the existing firefighting trucks and to buy new equipment. Only months later in, we were seeing the fruits of that generosity in action, as the Voluntarios fought to contain the blaze around Xàbia and Gata de Gorgos just a few weeks ago.

The Secretary of Todos Juntos Xàbia, Marion Kenworthy explained: “Having seen first hand the devastation caused by the fires of 2016, Todos Juntas Xàbia decided to donate some of our funds to update the equipment essential to the work of the Voluntarios who work so selflessly to keep us safe. Of course, we didn’t expect to see them in action quite so soon. However, I think I speak for everyone when I say how much we rely on, and appreciate, the amazing team of Voluntarios at Balcon al Mar and we are thankful to our many members and friends who enabled us to contribute to such an important cause.”

Planning ahead for summer, a giant inflatable platform with space for up to 600 people is to be set up in Xàbia’s Granadella Bay to provide a safe space for the evacuation of residents in the event of another massive forest fire like that 2016.

However, the most important protection for the safety of the land is our vigilance. Carelessness has traditionally been the major cause of these devastating fires which can spread at a terrifying speed.

Let’s hope for a safe and fire free summer.

The best place to enjoy the hogueras fiesta is in Alicante city itself during the weeks leading up to San Juan day on June 24.

The fiesta includes the mighty mascletàs each day at 2pm at the Plaza de los Luceros from Tuesday June 18 until Monday June 24. The mascletà is a rhythmic display of pyrotechnics whose sound can build up to an incredible crescendo of 120 decibels or more.

Other events not to be missed in Alicante include a night mascletà in Calle Francisco Muñoz Llorens at 11.30pm on Friday June 7; bands and a parade from 6.30pm in the city centre on Saturday June 8; another mascletà at Avenida Pintor Xavier Soler, at the roundabout of the Gran Vía shopping centre, at 2pm on Saturday June 15; and the offering of flowers to the patron saint, the Virgen del Remedio, on Friday June 21 and Saturday June 22.

Another incredible firework show, La Palmera, takes place from the top of Santa Bárbara castle at midnight on June 24. Around 1,200 rockets are fired simultaneously to explode to form a palm tree which lights up the city. This display signals the start of the cremá or burning of the giant statues, starting with the one by the town hall.

The Entertainers Tribute To Sandra Welham by

Peter Sockett

The Entertainers have restructured their programme of songs for the U3A Vall del Pop event at Los Arcos on 28th June so that it can be a tribute to Sandra Welham, who died unexpectedly quite recently. Sandra was a founder member of The Entertainers.

Recently, as I went through an old scrap book of press cuttings, I came across one from the Costa Blanca News for 1st November 2019 which is particularly poignant. This article reported on one of the very early shows by The Entertainers, where they were performing at a U3A Vall del Pop event in Alcalali, in which I had highlighted Sandra’s performance with the words: “Sandra took everyone’s breath away in closing the (first) set with ‘Send In The Clowns’”; and “Sandra, supported by Linda and Ditas, gave us a hauntingly beautiful ‘I Know Him So Well’”. I understand the group will be featuring The Wind Beneath My Wings and I Know Him So Well, particular favourites of Sandra, with Jo leading the tribute to Sandra – a beautiful lady. The Entertainers early summer programme includes shows on:

6th June - SCAN at Los Arcos.

28th June - U3A Vall del Pop (Sandra Welham Tribute) at Los Arcos.

1st August – Make A Smile at Pool Bar Benidoleig. These events will be publicised by the organising charities, from whom the tickets should be purchased. You can follow the Entertainers on Facebook at The Entertainers Marina Alta and they look forward to seeing you at their events later this year.

The craft fair in the port of Jávea extends its

opening times

As of the 1st of June the Amata Art and Crafts Fair, which is held every Sunday morning in the Port of Jávea, extends its opening times to Saturday afternoons in the run up to the main summer fair. As the days will be warmer and longer, they will open their stalls at 6pm in the afternoon and stay until 10pm or later. On Sunday mornings opening times stay the same: from 11am until 2pm.

Since 2013, craft association Amata, at the invitation of the port's shopkeepers' association, has held a summer fair on the sea side boulevard, with the guarantee that the participants only sell their own work. This year's summer fair, will be held from 28 June till 1 September.

There is a wide choice in this small but select fair, since the organisers rigorously select the participants. This way there is always something for everyone's tastes: paintings and watercolours, papier-mâché and ceramic figures, leather bags, pyrography, amigurumis, clocks and bowls turned from wood with resin, and several stands with jewellery in different materials and styles.

Many artisans come almost every week, while others only come from time to time, but all are happy to accept special orders for collection the following week. The fair is indicated on Google maps (https://goo.gl/maps/pHb3PsmSDjm) and has its own Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ feriaartesaniajavea).

THE AIRCREW ASSOCIATION COSTA BLANCA CELEBRATES A 70TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY!

On Wednesday, 24th April, Members of the Aircrew Association Costa Blanca were delighted to share in the 70th Wedding Anniversary Celebration of one of their Members, Gordon Blythe and his bride of so many years, Caroline, at the Casa Toni Restaurant in Moraira. Gordon and Caroline met and fell in love in 1953 in Singapore. Gordon was serving in the Army there and Caroline was the daughter of Gordon’s Regimental Sergeant Major! Courting was, therefore ‘interesting’! They shortly became engaged and, the following year, they married at The Church of Christ The King on the 24th April. So began a marriage that took them to BAOR (Germany), Singapore twice and Northern Ireland. Having served in the Army for 43 years, Gordon and Caroline eventually retired and have lived in Altea for over 30 years.

Having heard a resume of their life together followed by a toast to the amazing couple from Max Maxwell, the Association Chairman, Members and other guests and friends of Gordon and Caroline enjoyed an amusing and emotional reply from Gordon. This was followed by very personal and much appreciated tribute from their Son, Gordon the younger, who had flown in from Germany for this special occasion to share the moment with his sister, Julie who also lives in Altea.

Prior to the lunch, Life Vice President Peter Langley said a highly appropriate grace and the excellent and very happy function was brought to a close with the Aircrew Toast proposed by the President, Tom Brown. The Aircrew Association wishes Gordon and Caroline many more happy, peaceful and healthy years together! The photograph top left shows Gordon and Carol demonstrating an understandable Public Display of Affection! Behind them are their son Gordon, their Daughter Julie and, over Gordon’s left shoulder, a very long standing friend, Eva!

This month, the ladies of U3A Calpe met at the beachside restaurant La Granada, on Arenal beach. With the sunshine and sea as a background, the JUGS (Just us Girls) group enjoyed a delicious Menu del Dia, in the company of good friends old and new. The restaurant owner Zhirayr, and his staff, ensured great menu choices and service with a smile. A wonderful start to the summer season.

Kenny Corris brings you

Aries: Expansive Jupiter enters into Gemini for a one year stay bringing you an impetus to take on some new skills and benefit from learning techniques. New horizons see you taking on responsibilities.

Taurus: Warrior planet Mars enters into your sign mid month, and is testing you as finances are currently under scrutiny. Money comes and goes but you have to find a way to balance the books and control expenditure.

Gemini: Venus is squared with taskmaster Saturn, who questions your motives right now. Since you are rubbing shoulders with Venus you don’t have to have answers, only the very best of motives for what’s next.

Cancer: Venus enters on the 16th bringing harmony and creativity. This is a time for a new loving relationship, or a re-kindling of an existing partnership that seems to have gone stale. Open your heart and be sociable.

Leo: The Sun is using solar energy to support your new ventures with optimism and heralds new beginnings. This is a time to plan a long distance trip and get the ball rolling to see dreams become reality!

Virgo: It’s all about chasing goals and teamwork this month, as you finally get the green light on a project that is close to your heart right now. Jupiter is in your tenth house, a 12 year event, so luck and good fortune back you.

OUR OROSCOPE

Libra: Mars in the eighth house sees you take on both ambition and drive. You’ve started and you have also to finish, but with current joint ventures you seem to be being held back, for no apparent reason whatsoever.

Scorpio: Pluto teams with Pluto, Lord and ruler of the underworld. This eighth house event connects you to your innermost spirituality; and answers some questions that you have been afraid to ask. You need answers!

Sagittarius: The Full Moon shines a light on negotiations and sales and also spotlights an interview, which you have long awaited. Things have to get easier as complications and those things that hold you back are dealt with.

Capricorn: The fourth house of family and domesticity is in the forefront this month. Mercury spreads the word whilst Venus tunes into harmony to resolve a pointless family issue that’s becoming harder than ever to handle.

Aquarius: You have a challenge and you can’t resist it. There are two sides to every story, but your voice is yet to be heard. Assertive Mars backs you to the hilt and helps you fight your corner, but it shouldn’t be necessary.

Pisces: In transit from the seventh house undue stress comes from worries of a financial matter. Do your sums and you will see that someone isn’t pulling their weight, and for sure that someone isn’t you. Time to talk!

Walk Your Way Well

Hydration Hikes! The Importance of Staying Hydrated While Walking in Nature.

Walking in nature is my favourite way to connect with the world around us, but as the summer heat rises, it's crucial to prioritise hydration to stay safe and healthy during your outdoor adventures. Hydration plays a pivotal role in supporting our bodies, especially during physical activities like hiking, where we can quickly lose fluids through sweating. When out and about, it's essential to bring an adequate supply of water to prevent dehydration. Don't underestimate how much you might need. A good rule of thumb is to drink water BEFORE you feel thirsty to ensure your body resin's hydrated throughout your hike. Invest in a quality reusable water bottle and make a habit of taking sips regularly to keep your body functioning optimally.

In addition to staying hydrated, other tips for walking in the heat of summer include wearing lightweight and breathable clothing to help your body regulate its temperature, applying sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, and planning your hike during the cooler parts of the day to avoid the peak heat hours. It's important to listen to your body and pace yourself during hot weather walks. Take breaks in shaded areas, and if you start to feel dizzy, fatigued, or experience symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as rapid heartbeat and excessive sweating, find a cool spot to rest and rehydrate immediately. Take this seriously!

By prioritising hydration and following these tips, you can enjoy our gorgeous local beauty spots while staying safe and watered during your summer outdoor adventures. And don't forget your doggie needs lots of water too! If you would like to walk with me this summer, then drop me a line on WhatsApp +34 676 507 791. I've got some "cool" routes in mind.

Go nuts for HORCHATA in Valencia

Horchata is the traditional summer drink in the Valencia region. Until August, you can find out more about the history and cultivation of horchata (orxata in valenciano), which is made with tiger nuts, during a visit to Món Orxata, in Alboraya, just north of the city of Valencia.

During the tour you can visit an orchard where the organic tiger nuts (chufas) are cultivated and find out more about its rich history before visiting the artisan Orxata Factory and tasting the drink accompanied by handmade fartons.

As well being incredibly refreshing, the tiger nut itself is very good for your health, with high levels of iron and potassium. It does not contain sodium and is low in fat, while being rich in minerals and vitamins.
