Top three eyewear trends for 2023
Specsavers Ópticas recently released an informative State of Eyewear report, identifying the big eyewear trends to look out for in 2023. To produce the report, research was carried out on behalf of Specsavers Ópticas by Curated Digital, a digital consultancy specialising in data driven and insight-led marketing. The report noted that over recent years, eyewear fashions have been dominated by decade nostalgia with retro nods to the oversized 70's square shapes, cat eye revivals and the 2000s comeback. And, although they still predict some of this homage to continue, they believe that the past truly will be the past with a new wave of future-grade glasses. Taking centre stage will be space-themed, alien-like shapes and chunky maximalist-esque frames. Here are three trends that Specsavers Ópticas predict will be a big hit in 2023.
BUGGED OUT
Inspired by the bug eye frames of the 80s, gigantic upturned tinted spectacles have been popular on the Fall/Winter 2022 runways.
Kylie Minogue 129€ YOUR DISCO NEEDS YOU PLAYFUL+ INVISIBLE
Pantone predicts this year’s colours will be all about blending history and innovation; by offering us bright, bold, positive, yet muted shades. This will creep into the current chunky acetate trends to give us playful almost invisible colours, which will reframe our notions of colour.
Viktor-Rolf 229€ VR 01 SUN RX GOING GALACTIC
Futuristic fits are here, with sci-fi and cyber eyewear set to take centre stage in 2023. Dystopian-core embodies the concept of ‘black is the new black’, featuring a dark and daring aesthetic.
Specsavers 109€ FRIDA

Quite simply, have you protected your family in a correct way?
The first question would be – have you taken out Life Insurance? You may have a Mortgage Protection policy, which means on your death the mortgage will be paid. But of course, this is nothing to do with providing your family with some financial security when they really need it. Mortgage Protection is a good policy to have as it will pay off any mortgage you have on your house, keeping your family secure in their home. This is death only cover, however there are some additional options you can add on if you require them.
For example for Mortgage Payment protection, for €100,000 of cover for a 50 year old can be as little as €305 per year.
Whereas life insurance provides a payment to your family, to cover funeral costs, inheritance taxes, etc.
You can tailor the life policy to your own requirements and create a bespoke life insurance – whether to cover the initial costs incurred on your death or provide your family with a lump sum to provide for their future.
For example life cover of €50,000 for a 50 year old, can be as little as €155 a year
You do need to be resident in Spain for these policies and there will be a simple health/medical questionnaire that you will need to complete online. These policies are available with monthly direct debit payments, and our policies will be in English.
I understand that when you go to the bank, they will try and sell you life insurance, both for yourself and your mortgage. Be careful as they tend to be more expensive and you are unable to tailor these policies for you own particular needs.
Alongside the life policies, we can provide various Accident Policies to give you protection throughout your life and provide support should you sadly experience a life changing accident.

This month there are lots of celebration days, St Patrick's Day, Mother's Day, San José and of course the Fallas. Hopefully the weather will be good for all the parades, although looking at the long term forecast it looks like we are going to be getting some more rain.
Reading through this issue reminds me of how lucky we are to have so many activities offered to us in this area, and (mostly) the weather to be able to enjoy them. There really does seem to be something available for everyone - as one group says, there just aren't enough days in the week to fit them all in. We are starting to put together the 25th edition of our Professional Services guide - if you have a business and would like to attract more English speaking clients (I say 'English speaking' as we know it is picked up by many nationalities who do not have an equivalent publication in their own language) then get in touch with the office or our representative local to you to find out more. The contact details are below.
Until next time, take care and be kind.

WHAT IS RADIO ASTRONOMY?
I concluded last month's article about using an ordinary radio to listen to shooting stars by saying it was a simple bit of radio astronomy. I should have been prepared for the inevitable question 'what is radio astronomy?'
Something that mystifies many people.
Ok then, I'll do my best to answer, and I'll keep it straightforward, in essence it's not very complicated. Understanding the results of what is discovered is the tricky bit, but I'll come to that later.
A radio telescope looks at the sky by picking up radio waves instead of light waves. These are both a part of what's called the electromagnetic spectrum. Visible light is one frequency in the electromagnetic band, and radio waves are another.
Back in the 1930s a clever chap called Karl Janski must have been thinking something similar. He reasoned that if a star emits visible light, it probably emits radiation in lots of other frequencies. He was correct, and he built the first radio telescope. Nowadays we “look” at stars, galaxies etc in virtually every part of the spectrum, radio, x ray, infra red, gamma rays, each method showing us something different about our target.
A radio telescope doesn't normally give a picture, it puts its output into various things. A loudspeaker, a graph, a wiggly line on paper, but mostly into numbers. These numbers will tell us the precise frequency, signal strength duration and much more about what it's listening to. Looking into space with a radio telescope shows a huge number of things that our eyes will never see. When someone thinks of a radio telescope, it's quite likely that the massive dishes at Jodrell bank will come to mind, they are very spectacular and well worth a visit if you are ever near there. What you are actually looking at is a kind of aerial, a sort of massive version of a satellite dish. The first clever bit they do is to point precisely at a chosen point in space, and then follow it as the Earth turns. The precision needed is huge and it's a great technical achievement. The rest of the clever stuff happens firstly in a building where a mass of electronics makes sense of the signal, then the information is sent to various researchers who try to understand what it all means. All this seems very remote from just looking through a pair of binoculars, and almost impossible for an ordinary amateur astronomer to even consider trying, but that isn't true thanks to your ordinary home computer and a clever inexpensive gadget. The gadget is called an SDR which stands for a Software Dependant Radio and what it does is turn your computer into a sort of super radio, that can replace a very expensive receiver used by professionals. Is it really so simple and easy? No of course it isn't but it can be done and next month I'll tell you what's involved, and what happened when I tried it for myself.

Financial Advice from our family to yours Solidarity Tax
The Spanish government recently approved the introduction of a Solidarity tax for high-net-worth individuals here in Spain (Impuesto de solidaridad sobre las grandes fortunas). This is supplementary to the existing Wealth Tax and does not replace any existing obligations.
What is it?
This newly introduced tax has come in on a temporary basis and only affects individuals with a high-net-worth. Initially, the tax will only be applicable for the tax years 2022 and 2023, but it has been approved with a “review clause” that could see the declaration continue in future years.
The main purpose of this tax is to harmonise the taxation of personal wealth across the different Spanish regions. Up until now, each autonomous region has had the ability to set its own rules on Wealth tax, something which has caused an issue at national level given certain regions have reduced the Wealth Tax down to a 0% rate.
How is it calculated?
Every individual resident in Spain has a personal allowance of 700.000€, in addition to a main residence allowance of 300.000€. Tax is then applicable on wealth that exceeds €3 million in value, on sliding rates starting at 1.7%. Calculations are made using the value of the assets as of 31st December and the declaration is done at the same time as for the existing Wealth and Income tax returns, between 1st May and 30th June. For those affected, the first declaration will need to be done in May/June this year for the calendar year 2022.
It is worth noting though, that for any region where tax is payable under the original Wealth Tax declaration, this can be offset against any liability arising from the new Solidarity Tax.
Summary
This is a highly controversial tax which is now being challenged at Court level in Madrid. It is being questioned whether this tax is constitutional and there is doubt on how it will affect the relationship between the central and regional governments moving forward.
If you would like more information on the Solidarity Tax or have any questions about your position, please do not hesitate to get in contact with us.

Monumental March fiesta
The most spectacular fiesta in the Valencia region is celebrated in March with a riot of colour, noise and amazing giant monuments. Fallas is one of the most important fiestas in Valencia with enormous statues put up in the streets for a few days before being burnt on March 19 - the day of the cremà - in celebration of St Joseph's Day. In Dénia, the streets will be filled with these colourful statues in the week leading up to Sunday March 19. During the week, the streets will come alive with talented bands, parades and the loud mascletà - a pyrotechnic spectacle when a series of firecrackers explode one after the other, reaching 120 decibels or more.
The best place by far to see the fallas fiesta is in Valencia itself where you can see hundreds of these colourful, often satirical, statues. The mascletàs in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Valencia, are held daily throughout March until the day of the cremà at 2pm and have to be seen - and heard - to be believed.
Other towns celebrating fallas include Benidorm, Calpe, and Gandia.
As with many traditions, fallas has evolved over time to become a major tourist attraction. Its roots lie in the Middle Ages when carpenters used planks of wood as candleholders in the winter. To celebrate the arrival of spring, they would burn the wood. Over time, the wood was dressed in clothes to look like a person. These carvings became more and more elaborate until the wondrous fallas fiesta evolved.

We all have things we would like to change about our bodies, and for many of us this includes our smile, especially if we have teeth that are crooked, yellow, misshapen, or missing altogether. Many of us may find ourselves in need of restorative treatment due to injury, illness, or other issues that can impact our oral health and the appearance of our teeth.
Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a new unique digital dental treatment planning tool that could help give you a perfect dazzling smile within weeks at a more economical cost than you would imagine.
DSD strengthens a dentist’s diagnostic vision, enhances predictability, and improves communication between dentist and patient. A treatment plan is completely based on a thorough analysis of the patient’s dental and facial proportions. Using videos, photographs, and teeth models, DSD dental teams can get a better sense of the relationship between the lips, gums, and teeth, as well as how they work together to create the perfect smile.
One of the biggest advantages of this amazing technology is that patients can see the smile preview before they begin the procedure. They can work with the dentist to modify colour, shape, and even the length of the teeth to create their ideal smile.

Bunions or HAV?
The Bunion or Hallux Valgus is a deformity of the foot caused by a deviation of the first toe towards the middle axis of the foot and a deviation of the first metatarsal towards the outer edge of the foot accompanied by irregular bone growth in the first metatarsal head and articular incongruity of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This causes pain due to inflammation of the soft tissues of the area from constant friction against footwear and from the structural and mechanical alteration due to the bone deviation. When is it recommended to operate on bunions?
It is recommended to operate on bunions when they are painful, when osteoarthritis appears or the structural deformity affects walking correctly which in turn affects other levels of the locomotor system. It is also advisable to perform surgery in cases in which as a result of the bunion, the toes are deforming like when the second toe appears hammer-like.
When a patient wishes to undergo an operation a professional should study each case individually, taking into account the age, health status, lifestyle ... etc. At Portalet Clinic, we will explain in detail and alleviate any worries without compromise.
What type of technique is carried out at Clinica Podológica Portalet?
We perform minimum incision surgery. As its name suggests, it is done using minimal skin incisions, usually 2 to 4mm. Through these millimetric incisions we can reach the soft tissues and bone, without causing injury to the adjacent tissues.
Advantages of Minimal Incision Surgery:
- Immediate recovery as the procedure is minimal. - The patient walks away with a post-surgical shoe without crutches or help. - After just 48 hours the patient can continue life as normal. - Almost painless. - No fixing bolts or needles used. One of the drawbacks of open surgery is the use of fixing materials, with Minimal Incision Surgery fixations are not necessary as the soft tissues themselves, which we have respected, the joint capsule and a light dressing are responsible for this. - Local anesthetic, only affecting the foot, so the dose used is less. - No hemostasia (restriction of blood flow). As the size of the incision is so small, there is little bleeding so there is no need for a tourniquet, thus avoiding all risks of cutting blood flow. - Less risk of infection. The small size of the incisions also decreases the risk of infection. - Barely visible scaring.

A Valentine's Day evening that we will remember forever
What an absolutely superb night of entertainment we enjoyed at The DAR Social Club. Billed as a "Valentine's Day Party" my wife and I had absolutely no idea what to expect when we arrived at 6.30pm.
But what we enjoyed was a Valentine's experience utterly different from any Valentine's evening ever before, and one that for very many good reasons will remain in our minds, well, hopefully forever.
We arrived to a red carpet reception, were photographed with a lovely Valentine's backdrop, handed a glass of Cava and to begin to get us into a romantic mood, we were ushered to the DAR Cinema area where for about fifteen minutes we watched the endings to many popular romantic films. Then our Host, Lola, invited all the couples to gather in the main area, and she explained that throughout the evening all the couples would be invited to take part in many different activities, all designed to be fun and unusual, and to make us think about Love. But first some food and wine, she announced, and the sumptuous Buffet was enjoyed by all.
While we were enjoying the food we were treated to some classical music played on the grand piano, then a talented Opera singer sang some classical songs, all whilst a very a lovely pair of award-winning professional dancers showed off their Spanish ballroom dancing skills. Already a very pleasant evening!
Having now enjoyed the Buffet and the themed entertainment, the carefully planned activities began in earnest. Without going into detail about every experience that Lola invited the couples to partake in, partly because of lack of space in this article, and partly because I certainly would not want to spoil the fun for the couples who attend next year's Valentine's Party, let me summarise that we participated in a "Shoe" competition, enjoyed a hilarious time in a kid's Ballpark play area, had a musical session in a Bouncy Castle, took part in some Scottish Dancing, then we were taught some Russian Dancing by another dance professional, followed by the arrival of a large and beautiful Phoenix, with each couple having unhurried time to be photographed. This had been a very carefully and thoughtfully planned evening, with huge credit going to Lola and her team. After four hours of fun, at 10.30pm the evening was sadly over, but we left with one final unexpected treat. Down below in the outside area, it was snowing! A large snow machine was fluttering snow everywhere, we laughed again playing in the snow for a good few minutes, a romantic end to a most enjoyable and unforgettable night. Whatever the next themed event is, my wife and I hope to be there. You should most certainly give the DAR Social Club a try!

HELLO AGAIN
J J. Jones has been portraying Neil Diamond for the past 30+ years taking him as far away to Australia for 5 years touring, and 3 years in UK theatres with his 7 piece band, but for the last 11 years as one of the top acts in Benidorm.
The time has come to now perform his show outside of Benidorm as he has recently moved home to Jalon and away from the hustle bustle of Benidorm - time to play more rural areas, in other words to slow down a bit.
The show comes complete with full P.A. and state of the art lighting system. The show consists of a 1 hour first set which consists of the most popular ballads Neil Diamond has performed and written, from the film the Jazz Singer including Love On The Rocks, Hello Again, and the songs of life. The second set is 50 minutes of audience participation with songs Forever In Blue Jeans, Crackling Rosie, America, and of course everyone's favourite Sweet Caroline. The show is suitable for restaurants, outdoor venues and private parties. To enquire about this show please contact Lin or JJ at neildiamondtribute1@gmail.com, or visit

U3A Calpe
U3A Calpe recently held its first General Meeting of the new year. Almost 80 members attended. The guest speaker was Carole Saunders, Adviser to the Mayoress of Calpe.
Carole provided a detailed update on a range of issues relating to Calpe itself and aspects of life in Spain for ex-pats. Topics covered included voting in the municipal elections in May, the regulations, and obtaining stickers, for the new Emission Zones, and dealing with unauthorised occupation of property. Members were grateful to Carole for her patience in answering a number of individual questions.
The President reported that membership was rising again, after the difficulties caused by Covid and Brexit, and financially the association was stable. She informed members that a new Groups Coordinator for the Committee was now required – anyone interested should get in touch by email to arrange a 'no obligation' chat over a coffee.
Attention was drawn to the re-starting of the U3A Choir, weekly on Wednesday evenings at the Civic Centre, from 6-7.30pm. Group Leader, Mary Anderton was at pains to point out that singing was thirsty work, and that rehearsals always concluded in a nearby bar!
The choir will be preparing for a number of activities including performing as part of U3A Calpe's Coronation celebrations. In addition, Line Dancing will be available for interested members on Thursday afternoons at the LAFMA premises, starting at 2.30pm for an hour.
The monthly newsletter will be published during the first week of the month – please send any items for publication to the President by the 5th of each month, apart from July and August when there will not be a newsletter.

ANOTHER big charity donation has been made by the Teulada-based English Choir
This time the money was handed over to Sylvia Tatnell BEM, president of the Teulada Alzheimer's day centre. It was the latest amount raised from audiences at the choir's recent concerts in Moraira, adding to the thousands raised in the area by the choir since its formation more than 40 years ago.
Sylvia said: "We are delighted. There are so many things at the moment we need money for. We rely on donations like this."
Among pressing items earmarked for the money is a new minibus to transport patients from their homes to the centre each day. Their present vehicle is soon due for replacement. Choir president John Turner said: "We are pleased that the 900€ we have been able to raise thanks to our generous audiences is going to a very worthwhile purpose."
The day centre provides much needed respite care for 20 people suffering from Alzheimer's or similar ailments each day. Meanwhile the choir is busy rehearsing the programme for their next concert in May at La Sinieta, Moraira. Included in the programme are works by Gershwyn, Irving Berlin and Bernstein.
The choir is also busily embarked on a recruitment campaign for singers.
"We rehearse for a couple of hours each week on Thursdays at 2.45pm in the Pensioners Centre next to the council building in Teulada. Anyone is welcome to turn up and sing - we give every type of encouragement and help, even to those with no experience of singing in a choir,!" said John.
British prefer Jávea to Dénia
Jávea’s population has grown in the past year with 28,731 registered residents, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE) data. This is an increase of nearly 800 people compared to 2021.
The population growth is down to the fact that more foreign nationals - 12,633 - are choosing to live in Jávea.
The British are first place in the rankings with 4,954 living in Jávea, almost 18% of the total population. This is four times the number of British people registered in Dénia, whose population is twice the size of Jávea. Of the 47,921 people registered in the capital of La Marina, only 1,434 are British, just 3% of the population.
Photo by Eduardo Kenji AmorimMini Golf
Maybe mini golf is a bit of an unfair name, we supply the best, really the best artificial putting surfaces available. It is an amazing product for serious golfers but also just for fun. We have created some amazing golf areas for clients who enjoy their golf, but we have had a bit of a spike with general clients wanting to have it just as a bit of fun.
Lots of clients rent their houses out for summer and lots of properties have small dead spaces within the garden, so what a great way to use it, by creating a fun area not only for you and your family but if you rent your property it’s just another attraction to potential renters that you have a mini golf or putting area within the garden.
It's a great idea as it adds something a little different. And at the end of the day securing more rentals (if that’s what you do) is only a good thing.
For the more enthusiastic golfers out there, we can create any kind of area you want, and more importantly, because of our general artificial grass, landscape, and garden design background, we can make it work seamlessly with the rest of your garden. I have seen other putting areas (made by other companies) and I do feel that sometimes putting surfaces can be a bit randomly dropped into spaces. Most of our competitors are simply about supplying grass and therefore they can’t or won’t offer suggestions as to how best position the grass and just simply put it where the client roughly says. As part of our service we offer suggestions to our clients to make sure they get the absolute best, if it requires a planting border putting in or a screen, or a little more normal grass or just some extra shape, we will think about things and make those suggestions to our client so they get the best all round service. We supply cups, flags and all the necessary equipment for you to have some great fun with friends and family.

Walk Your Way Well with
I'm writing this article during my city break in London. My feet are burning and my heart feels full. I've fallen back in love with this stupendous place. And I've done it all on foot.
Cities, generally, are designed to be walked. Walking means we can dictate our own tour schedules, with no peak time travel charge, and possibilities open up beyond bus stops, tram routes, and metro stations. Choosing to skip out on places or stop and linger longer. It means a journey from A to B can be just that, or run through the entire alphabet of diversions en route as we invent our own routes and build new connections. There's more to getting to know a city than just "the sights". There's the sounds, the smells and the buzz. You miss that on a city tour bus. Immerse yourself. Get lost. FEEL the vibes. As we explore cities on foot we can uncover hidden nooks and crannies in places we may usually overlook; parks and gardens,
Niamh O'Sheehansmall patches of green space that are refuges for the wild among the built environment; the riversides, canal paths, and harbours that bustle. When you walk though, it’s not just getting there, it’s actually getting to see and experience every single place you go through. If you’re the type of person who’s just curious about the world, about how different people live, then city walking is perfect.
"There’s only so much you can learn from behind the wheel of a car or the window of a train, zooming past things before you even notice them, and anyway, in those vehicles, you need a destination. On foot, though, you can wander: serendipity kicks in, and you find things you never even knew you were looking for."
John ElledgeAnd there you have my walking Musings on the Month. Keep stomping guys. Keep walking your way well.
U3A Calpe JUGS Lunch

Bathing in flamingo tales
By Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.comThe bay of Calpe with the vigilant rock of Ifach has been a landscape appreciated since ancient times. The Roman site of Baños de la Reina in Calpe forms an exceptional coastal enclave.
After the passage of centuries, the popular imagination inherited the ancient legend of the pools as the “baths of the Moorish queen”. The existence of the large basins in the sea, carved into the indigenous Tosca stone, led to the naming of the archaeological site, Baños de la Reina or Birthplace of the Queen.
The Baños de la Reina site consists of three parts:
Roman Vicus
The Roman site of Baños de la Reina is a coastal enclave renowned for its mosaics, one of the most important collections of its kind in all of Roman Hispania. During the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, the Romans constructed the first homes alongside a small thermal complex known as the “Muntanyeta thermal baths”. At the end of the 3rd century AD, a luxurious villa with a circular patio grew up around the baths, fitted with an extraordinary private thermal complex.
Muntanyeta or thermal complex
In 1993, the remains of the “Muntanyeta thermal baths”, were discovered. Various pools had survived, as well as a natatio with cold water (frigidarium). Next to these were a number of ancient ovens, which had been responsible for maintaining the appropriate temperatures in the hot rooms (caldarium) and warm rooms (tepidarium). The heating system developed by Roman engineers used hollow floors elevated by columns of bricks (pilae) and walls with air chambers made from ceramic tubes (tubuli). The entire complex was richly decorated with grey marble plates from Algeria, evidence of which remained.
The Roman Fish Farms
Various pools have survived around the Tosca stone basins allowing fish farming to thrive down the centuries. This activity was combined with the celebrated salt production, that achieved its greatest splendour in the 2nd century AD.
The Salinas de Calpe - the area’s salt flats - were eventually supplying over 40 municipalities, but their decline became evident, towards the end of the 18th century, when the surrounding waters become infected with disease. Despite various enthusiastic efforts to revive the trade, the exploitation of Calpe’s salt flats ended in the late 1980s. As well as the fascinating area of Baños de la Reina, the Salinas de Calpe provide a natural habitat for many migratory birds, especially flamingos. In recent years, 176 different species have been spotted on the Flats where the shallow water levels provide an ideal habitat ideal for wading birds.
Spot the 13 differences
(answers in the classified pages)
Most of the flamingos to be seen in Calpe today are from the Camargue area of France or the Fuente de Piedra lagoon in Malaga. They thrive on the extensive salt flats where they breed and feed. Their bent bills allow them to feed on small organisms—plankton, tiny fish, fly larvae etc. The shrimplike crustaceans that thrive in the lakes form an important part of the flamingo diet and are responsible for the birds striking pink plumage.
Unnoticed by human visitors, but not the waterfowl, a resurgence of brine shrimps has recently been detected in the salt beds, after an absence of some years. According to a local municipal biologist, this demonstrates that the Salinas are in optimum environmental condition.
The flamingos find safety in numbers, which helps to protect individual birds from predators while their heads are down in the mud. Once mating is complete, a pair will take turns incubating their single egg. Young flamingos are born grey and white and do not turn pink for at least two years.
A circular walking trail surrounds the salt flats that were declared a protected maritime -terrestrial zone in 1993. Unfortunately, being so close to the roads, lots of unwanted rubbish collects in the vegetation, casting a pall over this avian paradise. Last year, 40 volunteers helped clean up the Salinas, collecting between them and impressive 1,000 kilos of waste from the area.
Vall Del Pop U3A Goodwill Team Distribute Charity Funds
The U3A Vall del Pop Goodwill Team raised more than €6,000 through their events, which in December they decided would be distributed to seven local charities. This year, rather than donating cash to the charity’s overall funding pot, the Team thought it would be better to donate something specific which they urgently needed so that all our members who have so generously contributed throughout the year would be able to see specific benefits for each selected charity.
So, following our December meeting, the Team have contacted each charity to determine a specific and affordable need and then they went shopping. Each charity they have met has been overwhelmed by your kindness and support and they have stressed how invaluable the goods and payments are to them.
Jalon Valley Arc chose cat food and money to pay off their account at Bernia vets. Sally and Matt Mason sent their heartfelt thanks. Caring for Cats also chose cat food and vet's payment, so Christine and I filled two trolleys with the favourite cat food! They were over the moon and sent their thanks.
PAWS Xalo dog rescue purchased raised dogs' beds, to keep the dogs off the cold kennel floor, warm coats and harnesses and still have some money left to spend. They sent their thanks to you all. The Children's Home in Benissa chose to purchase vouchers for the ten children in their care, whose ages range from 4-16, to spend on clothes, trainers, sports equipment etc. We were assured they would be very excited at your generosity.
The Alzheimer's Day Centre are still to decide what they would like. So watch this space.
Jalon Valley Help chose to pay for Yoga classes for JVH members. So representatives from the Goodwill Team will be popping along to a session to see it in action.
Finally, we delivered a boot full of goodies to the Bomberos

(pictured) based in Castel de Castells as a thank you from you all for the heroic efforts in fighting the forest fires last summer. To say they were delighted as they unloaded cases of wine, beer, brandy, soft drinks, biscuits, olives, crisps and cakes is an understatement. They were incredibly grateful and amazed by your generosity. We in turn thanked them for their incredible bravery and professionalism.
It makes those of us in the Goodwill Team very proud and very humble to be part of such a caring and generous group of people and we thank you for supporting us in our fund raising endeavours. This makes it all worthwhile.

NEVER ENOUGH DAYS IN A WEEK!
Members of U3A Marina Baixa never have time to become bored. Recently members have enjoyed lunch at Sunrise Restaurant in Albir, joined the Strollers Group for a walk to Punta de Cavall in the Rincon de Loix area of Benidorm and a Charity walk for Alicante Cancer Care.
It was U3A's first visit to Sunrise where they enjoyed a lovely meal with plenty of opportunity to catch up with friends or make new ones over lunch. Thanks to Hazel Layt, Social Events Co-ordinator, for organising the meal.
On 3 February 13 members joined Kaithe Greene (Group leader) for a walk to the Punta de Cavall which is now a National Heritage site within the Sierra Helada Natural Park. It can be approached from the Levante Beach by following the signs for Parque Natural. The watchtower dates back to 16th Century and was constructed under the order of Felipe II to protect the village of Benidorm from attack by pirates. Stunning views were enjoyed by those who took part.
The following day, 18 members met along with ex pats and locals from numerous nationalities in the church square in Alfaz del Pi to take part in the walk in aid of Alicante Cancer Care. The walk took a circuitous route through beautiful countryside finishing at the Forum Mare Nostrum for light refreshments.
U3A Marina Baixa has been providing social activities for English speaking ex pats for over 16 years. With membership at just 10 euros for the year it is a lovely way to make new friends, learn new skills and visit new places.
General Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of the month at 11am in the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi and if you do not have transport the No 10 bus stops immediately outside. You will be made most welcome so why not go along.

Commemorating International Women’s Day
International Women's Day is the perfect time to talk about the importance of fighting for equal rights and opportunities for all people, regardless of gender. Only through sustained efforts to improve the lives of women can we hope to create a more just and equitable society for all.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Spain was in transition from a monarchy to a republic. At this time, the country was also experiencing the effects of the Industrial Revolution, which led to a rapid expansion of industry and trade. Despite these changes, Spanish women faced significant challenges and restrictions in their daily lives.
One of the biggest challenges for Spanish women of the time was the fact that they had no rights. They were considered second-class citizens and had limited access to education, job opportunities and political representation. This meant that they were often relegated to a subordinate role in society and had limited autonomy in their personal and professional lives.
Karla Ingleton Darocas, art historian, educator and author, (SpainLifestyle.com) will give an informative and somewhat "shocking" talk on the situation of Spanish women at the turn of the 20th century. Her interesting talk will be after the European Union of Women Marina Alta's meeting at Javea Golf Club on Wednesday March 8. The annual meeting starts at 11am and Karla's talk will be at 11.30am.
She will highlight how devastating the lack of rights was for Spanish women when their husbands died in accidents at work. Without the support of their spouses, many women were left to fend for themselves and their families. Without access to employment opportunities or a source of income, they were often forced into poverty and faced numerous challenges to provide for their families.
In the 20th century, women in Spain were severely marginalised in a male-dominated society. As a result, many women were forced to resort to unconventional forms of work to survive.
Karla will talk about the types of work women were forced to do, which reinforced the marginalisation of women in Spanish society and perpetuated the idea that women were inferior to men.
Finally, on a more positive note, she will talk about an extraordinary woman from this period who did everything she could to ensure that her husband had everything he needed to succeed - until the end of his life and beyond.
Through her selflessness and dedication, this woman left an indelible impression on those around her and serves as a shining example of the power of unwavering love and devotion to her husband, the now legendary 19th and early 20th century master of light, Valencian artist Joaquín Sorolla.
She was the mother of his children, his social secretary and his emotional caregiver. She was his painter's model, his business partner and marketing manager. She was his driving force, the compass and the key to his social advancement and success.
That exceptional woman was Clotilde García del Castillo (Valencia, 1865 - Madrid, 1929).
Local Theatre Group Careline Theatre Needs YOU!
Since 2019 one of the biggest projects we had was trying to find new seats for the Theatre. The old wooden seats were starting to fall apart (Wood worm) and were fairly uncomfortable. So operation 'New Seats' was already in full swing back then. Covid hit and drained most of the funds over a 2 year period with no revenue, but with rent and bills to pay, we used all the funds allocated for the new seats.
SO a year of putting on shows, including Sleeping Beauty, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and our latest Panto, Cinderella as well as a 25th Anniversary show, a Night with Ultimate Elton and a Christmas Party with FBI, Shadows Tribute, has helped us get back on our feet but we still need so much more help. This amazing facility in the form of the Theatre in Alcalali, has entertained our community for a generation and we need to ensure it continues to grow for the next group of budding thespians to continue to entertain well into the future. We must ensure we never lose this gem of a resource.
The old chairs are gone, the new ones are ready to construct and we have an empty auditorium. We want to paint it while we have this opportunity and make some minor renovations. All this costs more money so on the 4th March we need you to come and Party like you've never Partied before. Get together those School Uniforms and have a blast!! Charity Shops here you come. A white shirt, tie, navy trousers, skirt will do..... Please Please come. It looks like it's going to be an exceptional night. Thanks for all your support. The Original Charity Shop and Library visit The Raquel Paya School
Every year the 74 children attending the Raquel Paya school in Denia for children with special needs, receive a visit from Santa who brings a present or a voucher for each child. There is also a special request from the school for help with a project. This year it is for assistance to finance transport for the children’s school outings, for which a cheque for 1,500€ was presented. 1,200€ from The Charity Shop, and special thanks to Diane and Pauline who donated a further 300€, which was raised at their tennis tournament.
Ten members of staff were invited to visit the school. Headmaster Miguel was delighted to receive the cheque and explained how important it is that the children have the opportunity to go on school outings. We were given an extended tour of the school and also lots of information about the methods used to teach the 74 pupils skills within their learning capacities. Miguel also wished to express the gratitude of the 47 professionals for the support and assistance given by The Original Charity Shop over the last 30 years. The visit was followed by delicious tapas and wine, beautifully presented by the catering pupils. The Original Charity Shop is situated on Carrer de Nancy 1, in Jávea’s Arenal, the library is to be found in Jávea Park. The shop and library are open Monday to Saturday from 10 am until 1 pm.
