My eyes are itchy. Is it okay to give them a good rub? No! Key points about Hay fever and Allergies

Now that all the rain is finally moving on, very soon we will find that the much drier conditions are bringing us all kinds of pollen and dust which can cause irritated, red, burning or sometimes swollen eyes and eyelids. Often generally termed as Hay fever or Allergens, for some people this can become quite uncomfortable and even debilitating – preventing you from enjoying warm, sunny days when the pollen count is at its highest. Particularly for contact lens wearers, if your eyes become itchy, red and watery, your vision through the contact lenses can appear ‘smeary’ and less sharp – not to mention uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time.

The common symptoms of Hay fever

For some people, the protein found in pollen can cause itchy, watery or red eyes, sneezing, a blocked or runny nose or itchiness in the back of the throat, nose and ears. Over-the-counter products such as Antihistamines, a Nasal spray or Dry Eye drops often help to calm down the symptoms, and if you are a contact lens wearer then you can try contact lens friendly eye drops or try swapping to daily disposable lenses. And swapping to your glasses for a while often helps as well. There are different types of dry eye drops to suit different levels of dry eye. Have a chat with our team in store, and we will be able to recommend the right type for you. Other things you can do yourself are to keep an eye on daily pollen counts so you can take necessary precautions, avoid going outside on days with high pollen counts wherever possible, shower and change your clothes after you’ve been outside, and avoid hanging

your clothes to dry outdoors. Also you can wear wraparound sunglasses to prevent pollen getting into your eyes

But try your hardest not to rub your eyes!

If you rub your eyes you can add more allergens such as pollens, and constant rubbing of the eyes can even cause a break in the top corneal layer (epithelium), causing pain and potentially leading to infection. Because it’s so common around the summer time, it’s easy to assume your symptoms may be related to hay fever. However, many people don’t realise that symptoms typically associated with allergies could also indicate other potentially serious eye conditions. Uncomfortable and sore eyes can be a sign of an eye infection, or conjunctivitis. Irritated, achy and red eyes can be a sign of iritis, which in some cases can lead to serious complications including cataracts and glaucoma. So if your symptoms become worse, or don’t go away with the help of antihistamines or other products, it’s a good idea to come and see us.

One area of our lives that we can control and do our best to protect both ourselves and our loved ones, is insurance. Unfortunately, I still hear of people who refuse to insure themselves, their families and everything they own, which of course, is very unwise. I have already said these words – if in doubt, speak to one of my consultants, who will be able to help you ensure your policies are correct with the coverage you need. One example, are you confident that all of the seats in your vehicle are covered? Do not assume that all your seats automatically have cover. Is your house policy adequately insured – is the size and area correct, do you have enough contents cover, remembering that the Kitchen is covered under contents? Have you made any changes or improvements to your home and have you updated your policy to include these? I can think of nothing worse than being told by an assessor that someone's home is under insured and they do not have enough coverage on their policy for the repairs and replacements required. I am often informed that insurance companies are very good until you have to claim. This of course, can be true but that is not always the fault of the insurer other than when it is sold on price only. Take very great care when offered a cheap home insurance – make sure you know exactly what you are paying for and again I offer an extra service to you all – my consultants will be happy to explain your policies and coverage. If in our opinion, you are under insured but you choose to stay that way, that of course is your choice but not necessarily a very wise decision and with my staff there to help and advise you, there is no excuse for not being insured correctly. Hopefully we have now seen the end of the rain for this year and we can start peeling the layers off. Whilst my family were here we had more sunny days than rainy ones, but being from the UK the rain did not stop them anyway. We all had a great time, but a week really isn't long enough. Our granddaughter is a Festera this year so she was involved in lots of processions over the Easter period with lots of proud granny moments. Even if you are not religious, watching the Easter processions is a very moving experience. www.femalefocusonline.com Page 6 Step 2: Fill out our simple online valuation form. We will ask you for information about your car and your contact details. You will also have the option to include up to 6 photos of your car.

How to sell your car

Quickly, Easily and most of all

SAFELY and SECURELY

Step 3: Receive a current market valuation. We will email you with our valuation, based on the information received and current fair market values.

Many of us have heard stories about friends or family here in Spain who have sold a car, but months later, perhaps even years later, the car has not been transferred into the new owner's details. And as a result future car taxes, speeding fines, or parking fines, have been sent to the seller's home address, or even worse debited directly from their bank account.

Step 4: Viewing, collection and immediate payment. We will arrange to view your car at a time and location that is convenient to you and payment will be immediate and at the time of collection.

This happens because many “car dealers” promise to take the car out of the seller's name, but in reality they only do so when they have a purchaser for the car. Even worse, sometimes they leave it up to the purchaser to do the transfer, and it never happens. Here at WeBuyCars.es we are different. We IMMEDIATELY transfer the title of the car to ourselves using a qualified Gestor. This COMPLETELY ENSURES that you are not liable for future taxes or fines.

Step 6: On collection of the car our Gestor will start the process of change of ownership, passing responsibility immediately to us. Even better, the Gestor fee for changing title of the car is met by us. You are no longer responsible for your car.

About WeBuyCars.es We are a family business operating on the Costa Blanca since 2003 and take great care in looking after the people that we buy from, as well as the people we sell to. We are known for our 5-Star service and reliability.

Valuing and Selling your car to us is a SIMPLE 6 Step process Step 1: Enter your Spanish registration number on our website www.webuycars.es and simply click "Value My Car".

Step 5: Sell your car the safe and secure way. We are a Spanish Registered S.L company and have been buying and selling cars on the Costa Blanca for over 20 years.

You will find more information on there about selling a car that belonged to a deceased relative or friend (Yes, you can), about selling a company car (Yes, you can), about selling a car registered outside of Spain (Yes, you can), and about selling a car with mechanical issues (Yes, you can). LOGIC SKYDIVE Would you like to join

FUNDRAISER

FOR UKRAINE!

us in making a difference? The Logic team are pleased to share with you some exciting news - we have decided to organise a Skydiving day for Charity later this year, so, in June, George and Joe will be doing their first ever tandem jump. A skydive is something we had spoken about doing before but we'd settled on the fact that it would be good to have a purpose behind the event, as it is not something we will be doing on a weekly basis! Having seen the very disturbing and upsetting news unfold this year in Ukraine, we have decided that “the purpose” is now upon us and have therefore built a fundraiser for Ukraine into our plans. We have selected the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja España) as our chosen non-profit, registered charity as they are on the ground actively helping Ukraine. The lack of water, food and health care has affected hundreds of thousands of people in Ukraine, so The Red Cross needs all possible support. The organisation helps tens of thousands of people every day, but the needs are growing. It is important to mention that the cost of the Skydive itself will be fully paid for by us personally, allowing ALL donations received via our fundraiser to be paid directly to the Red Cross without exception. The link below is for our GoFundMe page but as you cannot click through on the link in a magazine, you may wish to contact us directly for an electronic version of the link, should you wish to add to the contributions. Any donations are extremely valuable and would be greatly appreciated. The site itself is completely safe and it is easy to make donations online – all you have to do is simply hit the “Donate now” button on the right-hand side of the page and complete accordingly.

YOUR ASTRONOMICAL TELESCOPE - YOUR QUESTIONS.

The biggest problem someone like me faces when explaining something like a telescope, is that we forget to explain some of the basics. We blithely rattle on about things technical, forgetting that a newcomer doesn't always understand. All this was made clear to me by some of the questions I've had over the last few months, so now I'll try and clear up a few things. Q. Just what is magnification? A. Simply put, it's how many times bigger something appears through a telescope. 25x (times) magnification used on the Moon means it looks 25x closer. Q. So why can't I make it magnify a thousand times? A. What you are actually magnifying is the light that comes through the main lens (or mirror) of your telescope. As you magnify it the brightness goes down. Too much magnification, of say Jupiter, makes it look so dim that you can't see any detail. Naturally, there's more to this, but that is the most important bit. Q. Can I use my telescope to look at detail on the Sun? That's really bright! A. Your telescope can magnify heat as well as light, if you point it at the Sun, you could burn your eye from your head. OK... I'm trying to frighten you from trying this, there are methods and equipment to view the Sun, but you should join our group and learn how to do it safely. Q. Why do people use a red light torch when they go out to observe? A. I'll leave aside some of the comedic answers to this one! When you go outside on a dark night, it takes a while for your eyes to adapt to the dark. When they have, you'll be able to see far more stars in the sky than before. One quick blast from an ordinary torch will set your vision back to how it was, but our eyes aren't sensitive to red light in the same way as white light. I just stick an old red balloon over an ordinary torch, it gets ribald comments from my mates, but works just fine.

Q. Is it true that a telescope is looking back in time? A. Yes it is, but not in a Doctor Who way. Light from things in space takes so long to reach us that you are always seeing things as they were in the past. For the Moon it's only 1.25 seconds, for some of the planets it's hours, right up to the galaxies where you are looking back billions of years. Q. Did men really land on the moon? A. Huge groan from me, and my mates. It's the question we are all sick and tired of answering. Yes they did, definitely, without any shred of doubt whatsoever. When I was at college I was privileged to have an hour with the class working with a tiny piece of moon rock. Proving it was from the moon was not difficult for students. And if you don't accept that, don't you think the Russians, etc would have said something by now? Anyway, the remains of the landers can be seen from the Lunar orbiting satellites. Q. Are there any little green men out there? A. Blessed if I know. I hope so, and it's quite possible. But, to quote the late great Carl Sagan, "extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence", so I'll wait until I'm shaking hands / tentacles with an alien before I'm sure. Next month I'm going to talk about our astronomy group, and what we do, enjoy your observing.

Charles Oates,

up.

Thanks to LPD Travel of Albir for all the arrangements and Freda of the Travel Group, ably assisted by Rod. Photo by Freda Croasdell. The Travel Group are now looking at organising some day trips, the first of which will be a visit on 17th May to the spa/hot baths at Fortuna with lunch at the camp site restaurant. U3A Calpe Day Trip to Daniel Castaño, Yecla. We were welcomed at Bodega Castaño by our host, Raquel Ortuno, who guided us to the vineyards. She explained the grape varieties grown from the native Monastrell to French varieties such as Chardonnay, Macabeo, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Following our visit to the vineyards we enjoyed a super lunch in the dining room at the Bodega. Four organic wines were paired with the food and liberally served to compliment the meal. We entertained the staff with a few songs, congratulated the winners of four bottles of wine and completed our visit in the Bodega shop where members were free to buy wines of their choice. A good day was enjoyed by all. Rod Anderton.

KNOW THE BENEFITS OF ALOE VERA

www.femalefocusonline.com

Aloe vera grows freely on the Costa Blanca or you can buy plants for indoors and outside. The gel produced by its branches have amazing cosmetic properties. It is also a natural treatment for bumps, wounds and sores. Aloe vera is used a lot in traditional medicine. It calms skin which has been mildly burned and after radiotherapy treatment. It can be used as a balm for bruises and bumps for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic qualities as well as helping with cuts and wounds. As well as using aloe vera gel directly from the plant, it is found in oil, gel, soap, shampoo and face masks. Indeed many cosmetic products contain aloe vera. No wonder it is one of the most searched skincare ingredients on Google.

Here are a few benefits of aloe vera: ● Aloe vera is excellent for moisturising your skin. Apply the gel to dry or irritated skin. ● Aloe vera’s astringent properties are great for closing pores. It regulates the production of grease and dries pimples. ● The calming properties of aloe vera are marvellous for soothing sunburn. You can keep the gel or cream in the fridge for a more cooling effect. ● It is great for the hair as well as the skin. It is a lovely natural conditioner to keep hair soft and frizz-free as well as treating split ends. It is easy to keep an aloe vera plant indoors so you always have some of the soothing gel to hand. You can keep it in the shade or in a sunny spot, and you only have to water it when the soil becomes dry. To extract the gel, just cut one of the branches and open it lengthwise. You can use the gel directly on your skin.

FITNESS TIP OF THE MONTH This One Thing Will Improve Every Visit To The Gym

W

ouldn’t it be great if you could make one single and simple change to your gym routine that would improve every aspect of your workout: lifting, running, cycling, rowing, even walking. One thing that would help protect you against possible injury. Sounds too good to be true, but such a tip exists and it's this: ALWAYS WARM-UP. Warming-up takes just a few minutes and has so many benefits, and not just in performance. At Animae we can’t stress how vital it is to do a 5-10 minute pre-workout warm-up, even if you’re squeezed for time and won’t complete your normal routine. A good warm-up does a number of important things: it gets the body’s tissues and muscles ready, gives you an improved range of movement, and excites the nervous system. It’s important to warm up progressively by starting gently with your movements and steadily working your soft tissue, gradually building up to your workout. A personal coach can assist you in all aspect of fitness and the cost is surprisingly low at Animae. And don’t forget, a general membership gives you access to the entire Altea Golf Club, all for only 35€ a month. See advert alongside for details.

Luscious lashes

Would you like to wake up every day with gorgeous lashes that enhance your eyes and look like you’ve already applied mascara? Eye lash extensions are the answer! They are completely customisable to the look you want whether natural or dramatic. Mimis Kru have lash technicians that can work their magic for you! The beauty industry has many products to enhance lashes; mascaras and lotions for growth to name a few, but nothing quite compares to the dramatic effect of lash extensions. Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent fibres attached to your natural eyelashes to make them look longer, fuller and darker. Individual lash extensions are applied to each of your individual natural eyelashes, not your skin, one extension per natural eyelash, around 80-140 per eye, using a semi-permanent adhesive. Before your lash appointment it’s a great idea to have your brows tinted and shaped as this will enhance your eyes. Kina at Mimis Kru is a master of beautiful brows. Ideally arrive makeup free for your extension appointment and wear comfy clothing as you will be lying down, a bathroom visit before also is a good tip. Have a look at inspiration photos to decide on the look you want. The extension application appointment takes from 1 to 2 hours and your eyes remain closed for the duration of the application so all you need to do is… Relax! The eye area will be cleansed, under eye gel tape is applied to your lower lash line to keep them out of the way, then using tweezers the extensions are applied, it’s painless, the adhesive dries very quickly and once they are all applied your new lashes are brushed and hey presto… Awesome lashes! After care advice from Mimis Kru technicians: avoid all contact with water for 48 hours, don’t use cleansers with oil, avoid rubbing and touching your eyes, brush lashes to keep them in good shape and don’t use a lash curler. As with the hair on your head, eyelashes follow a natural cycle of growth and shedding, as the individual extension is applied to a lash it will shed with the natural growth cycle. Depending on the speed of growth to maintain the look infills will be needed every 2 to 4 weeks. So don’t wait, treat yourself today and book an appointment at Mimis Kru. ● Local 12, Edificio Caribe, Av del Pla 129, Jávea. Tel 965 793 584. www.mimiskruhairandbeauty.com Facebook Mimiskru. Inguinal Hernia Location An inguinal hernia occurs when a small part of the intestine protrudes through a weak point or tear in the abdominal muscles.

INGUINAL HERNIA

An Inguinal Hernia occurs when tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. The resulting bulge can be painful, especially when coughing, bending over or lifting a heavy object. This type of hernia is relatively common and pain is not always suffered, but if left untreated and complications occur it can become life-threatening. For this reason your GP is likely to recommend surgery.

If you are not able to push the hernia in, the contents of the hernia may be trapped in the abdominal wall, causing the hernia to become strangulated, which cuts off the blood flow to the tissue that’s trapped. A strangulated hernia can be life-threatening if it isn’t treated. Seek medical attention if you are suffering any of the folowing symptoms · Vomiting and nausea. · Fever. · Inability to pass bowel movement for a period of time. · Stomach pain that intensifies. · Hernia bulge that turns red, purple or dark in colour. So make an appointment with your GP if you notice a painful bulge in your groin area or are suffering with these symptoms as this is likely to be an Inguinal Hernia.

Teulada-Moraira Lions were once again honoured to be invited for breakfast at the Raquel Paya school near Denia. Raquel Paya is a specialist education centre which focuses on providing education and training to children and young adults with learning difficulties, particularly in terms of preparing the young people to fulfil active roles in society as they approach adulthood.

The school has students with a wide range of abilities and caters for students up to 21 years old. Different therapies are developed focusing on communication improvement, sensory integration, social skills, behaviour control, but with the older students, they are focussing on developing skills they could use in the hospitality and catering industry. Teulada-Moraira Lions have had a long relationship with the school and their latest donation of over 2.000€ has purchased an industrial standard dishwasher that the students can learn to operate. The school are developing links with hospitality providers in the area so that the pupils can gain some real work experience and ultimately take on employment in such establishments as Els Magazinos and restaurants in Dénia and Marina Alta. If you could offer the students any opportunity to experience basic catering tasks, please get in touch with the college – ring on 966 428 880 or email 03012013@edu.gva.es. The Teulada-Moraira Lions were seated at beautifully presented tables and treated to silver service by the pupils, putting into practice some of their training and giving them real experience of serving the public. It is always a pleasure to visit the school and the addition of some tasty treats prepared on site is an added attraction – Lions like their breakfasts! Everyone is aware of the humanitarian crisis that is engulfing the people of Ukraine, who have lost their homes and loved ones, who have had to flee their homeland taking only what they can carry, and many of whom are now without the basic necessities of life. In our U3A, we also want to help as much as we can, and with this in mind, we are organising a concert where the proceeds will go towards helping these people. For those of you who are not familiar with the Entertainers, they are a group of friends and volunteers singing a variety of dance songs and ballads with the main focus on their audience having fun. They perform at events throughout the year raising money for charity. Tickets are 15€ each and you can book your tickets by contacting Prue at prue.jackson@moraira-teulada.org and pay by making a bank transfer from a euro bank account. Prue will provide you with the details of the U3A bank account details at the time of booking.

It promises to be a fun evening, there will also be a raffle on the night from which we hope to raise a substantial amount for Make a Smile charity. We hope to see you there.

Entitled "Lights, Camera! Sing" it features music and songs made popular by their appearance on the silver screen. Numbers from “The Greatest Showman”, “Mama Mia”, “Evita”, “Chess” and many other favourites will be sung, and every one Oscar nominated at the time. The evenings entertainment will end with a spirited excerpt from Sconberg’s “Les Miserables”.

Crossing the line - where East meets West

www.femalefocusonline.com

The Greenwich Meridian separates East from West in the way that the Equator separates North from South. Inextricably linked with Greenwich Mean Time, it also sits at the centre of our international system of time zones. Its path is determined by the location of a historic telescope, the Airy Transit Circle, housed at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. Lines of latitude and longitude form the grid system used on globes, maps and charts. Latitude being a measure of how far North or South somewhere is from the Equator; while longitude is a measure of how far East or West any given point lies from the Prime Meridian. The science dates back to 1492 when Columbus first crossed the Atlantic. Such is the Meridian's fame that each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the world make their way to the Observatory to stand astride the Line, but we can do it right here on the Costa Blanca! Its position is marked in hundreds of other places. On its path from pole to pole, the Meridian passes through England, France, Spain, Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo, Ghana and Antarctica. I discovered it driving through the rice fields between Jávea and Pego and thought it was an exciting local feature many remain unaware of. The Costa Blanca region is ‘home’ to many passing points, a selection of which are listed below; - Albocàsser on the North side of CV-129 (Calle de San Juan).WGS84 lat 40.358660 - Vall d'Alba on the South side of CV-159 WGS84 lat 40.162600, and is marked by an Obelisk. - La Pobla Tornesa on the East side of the CV-15 (Villafames - Castellón Road) WGS84 lat 40.11580. - El Verger, CV-700 (Carretera de Cocentaina Denia) WGS84 lat 38.853451. - San Joan, Almazora, CV-1640 (Passeig Maritim) WGS84 lat 39.936100. If you have a GPS in your car you will be able to insert the latitude and it will guide you to the point where East meets West. A different way to explore the area. ‘On Board’ with Todos Juntos

Todos Juntos Jávea is delighted to be hosting a new cultural event on the evening of 19 May at the town’s Yacht Club, with prospective guests told to anticipate something a little different in celebrating Spanish culture and music. The ‘On Board’ event will include a delicious dinner prepared at the Yacht Club, preceded by a fascinating insight into the work of the internationally renowned painter Joaquin Sorolla, presented by David Gutiérrez, Jávea’s own expert on this world famous artist. Gutiérrez will look at how and why Sorolla chose the very special town of Jávea to paint some of his most exquisite works, many of which feature the old town port and other local landscapes. Sorolla is an integral part of Jávean culture, he lived here during the 19th century and has recently been honoured with a statue at the Port to commemorate his life and deep attachment to the town. To round off this unique evening, there will be a recital by the celebrated guitarist Jose Manuel Cortes, a recognised genius of the Flamenco genre. So prepare for an evening of Spanish culture in the form of both art and music, that will also help to raise funds for Todos Juntos, a Jávea based charity that helps people in need, especially those whose daily lives have been badly affected by Covid. Todos Juntos Jávea is a registered charity founded in 2011. It is run by a small international group of volunteers, including retired and working professionals. The charity reaches out to struggling families, often following a request from Social Services or, sometimes, directly from local schools or individuals in need. These last few years have been trying ones for many, perhaps suffering because of illness, unemployment or bereavement a family can easily find itself facing real financial difficulties. By helping to pay essential bills, such as water and electricity, as well as attending to the needs of children in the family, we feel we restore hope and dignity to some of the families who have hit rock bottom. TJJ has also taken an active part over the years to help the community with issues relating to autism. Please get ‘On Board’ to help the local community in Jávea. Tickets for this unique event are priced at 40€ and can be purchased via the website www.todosjuntosjavea.com or by email: todosjuntosjavea@gmail.com. Limited availability and tickets must be reserved in advance. (Covid rules will be adhered to).

COLL d’ARES - Path of Retreat STANDING ON A SUMMERS DAY, TRULY HUMBLED, WHAT WOULD IT HAVE BEEN LIKE IN THE WINTER OF 1939? Exhausted people, toiling up a steep hill, wearing thread bare clothes, pain etched on their faces, carrying worldly possessions in a sack on their back, escaping the ravages of the Civil War, in hope of a new life in France. There were many ‘Cami’s de la Retirada’ in Spain. At least three converged at the Coll d'Ares, a border crossing into France. Can Planes is an old Spanish farmhouse set in the foothills of the Eastern Pyrenees. A magnifying glass and a large-scale map locate it halfway between Rocabruna and Beget, close to the French/Spanish border. By car try Barcelona, Vic, Ripol, Camprodon and then Rocabruna. It is an extraordinary place accessed by a good forest track of about 1000 metres. The house is surrounded by green meadows and lush forests while the GR-11 walking track snakes out front on its way from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. This is the route to the Coll. On a visit to the Coll d'Ares on the Spanish/ French border the first noticeable thing was a cold wind belting over the Coll at such a speed it was impossible to stand upright. A building, obviously an old customs post, now turned into a cafe full of nothing much, stood there. Inside there was a line on the floor, one side France and the other Spain, the curt proprietor speaking an appropriate language where a customer stood. Everyone fell for his party trick when standing on the line. ‘International’ comes his reply. A laconic smile was the correct thing to do before ordering coffees, tostadas, and croissants in an appropriate language. He smiled back wearily. Outside a sign ‘Cami de la Retirada’ (Path of Retreat) sat alongside an EU notice with a brief description. ‘The border crossing of El Coll d'Ares, located between Mollo in Spain and Prats de Mollo in France was one of the most used by Republicans fleeing Spain at the end of the Civil War. It is estimated that between mid-January and mid-March 1939, 100,000 men, women and children crossed the Ares Coll.’ Dressed for cold and wind with anoraks, hats and gloves, history is touched by walking down the Path of Retreat back to Rocabruna then to Can Planes. It’s a broad path, sometimes rutted, with wildflowers either side, weaving its way over unkempt green hillsides, through small woods surrounded by rusty barbed wire. The route passes an old chicken shed, an old farmhouse and finally a new building with horses; but little else. This was solitude in the green Pyrenees, on a respectful, silent path full of memory for those who also walked here, many perishing on the way. ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER RETURN TO THE COLL TO WALK DOWN ANOTHER REFUGEE PATH to Mollo near Camprodon. This was altogether different terrain. A long hike along the grassy border distinctly marked with barbed wire and grazing sheep. Choose France or Spain from a signpost, then down to Espinavell, leaving behind an isolated expanse of green grass and a feeling of being able to touch the clouds at their lowest point. The thin thread path wound its way down from on high, passing a small river, a valley and two bridges. The narrow and steep alleys of Espinavell remained silent, the natural stone houses folding neatly into the contours of the hillside. Mollo was reached under a blue sky, high hot sun, to be greeted at a bar to cider, black pudding, eggs, and chips. Alas no French celebrity chef worked here. Coll d’Ares, Girona. Map reference 42 2201 N, 2 2724 E. Mollo, Girona. Map reference 42 2048 N, 2 2417 W. Reminiscences of a Nearly Somebody, a collection of self-deprecatory biographical essays by author Peter Morrell, will be published on 21 April 2022 by i2i Publishing of Manchester. Peter Morrell was born just before D Day. After school and university, where he read French, he qualified first as a solicitor in Peterborough, then as a barrister, based in London. He practised as a barrister until 1992, when he was appointed a Circuit Judge, trying criminal and civil cases in London and the East Midlands. Peter retired from the Circuit Bench in 2009, but continued to preside over Mental Health Tribunals until 2014.

An observant Christian since childhood, in 2008 Peter was ordained a deacon of the Church of England and a year later, priest. He currently ministers in the Watersmete Benefice in Northamptonshire, UK, and in the Costa Blanca Chaplaincy. Three novels written by Peter and all set in a fictional East Northamptonshire village called Pepynbridge were published between 2015 and 2016, and a collection of sermons preached by Peter in 2017. In Reminiscences of a Nearly Somebody, the opening essay, Wander-vogel, recounts a walk Peter took alone, aged 18, along the Rhine and Neckar valleys and through the Black Forest in April and May 1963. Hustings describes Peter's brief political career, culminating in the General Election of February 1974, when he stood as a

Conservative in the then strongly Labour and mining constituency of Ilkeston, in Derbyshire, UK. Peter's experiences as an author are the subject of Scribbling, with tips for aspiring writers, struggling to have their work published. Robed, which discloses Peter's institutional journey to appointment as an Assistant Recorder and subsequent swearing-in as a Circuit Judge, says more about the Establishment than it does about the author. Finally, Collared charts Peter's voyage from pew to altar, and includes entertaining anecdotes, both before and after he was ordained. Reminiscences of a Nearly Somebody, will join Peter's previously published books, The Rector of Pepynbridge, The Islamist of Pepynbridge, The Honourable Member for Pepynbridge, From The Pulpit, Home and Abroad and will be available from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.es from 21 April 2022. Also, at a Book Launch in I´Albarda Garden, Carrer del Baix Vinalopo, 8 Urb, Muntanya de La Sella, 03750 Pedreguer on 2 June 2022, between 11:00 and 13:00, at which representatives of the Press will be welcome. Peter spends several weeks every year at his holiday home in Alcalali, which he and his wife, Mary, have owned since 1997. In the UK, Mary and Peter live in Northamptonshire. They have two grown-up daughters and a granddaughter. Contact Peter Morrell on (00) 44 (0)7860 573 597 or email petermorrell@sulehay.co.uk or i2i Publishing on (00) 44 (0)7957 557510

Happy 30th Birthday to The Bed Centre It's been 30 years since The Bed Centre in Calpe opened its doors finally introducing the Costa Blanca to a good night’s sleep. Believe it or not, beds were very different in 1992 and luckily for our backs, technology has moved on hugely since then. For the last 30 years The Bed Centre has been carefully curating a range of comfortable, affordable and durable beds for their customers. The most popular mattresses at The Bed Centre are with pocket springs, natural fibres and cool cotton covers…super supportive but with a comfortable top to cushion the hip and shoulder…If their Google reviews are anything to go by, they seem to have it right! "Back when we started”, said current owner Lucy, “the trend was for divan bases with drawers. Fast forward 30 years and today it’s all ottomans for extra storage and stylish upholstered beds on Scandi style legs with simple modern head-boards…. And so much more”. There are so many styles, suppliers and fabric choices that no two beds are the same. You can design your very own bed, that suits you perfectly, right here at The Bed Centre by choosing each component’s design and colour so your bed is truly unique. Additionally, pop in to find that perfect pillow, duvet cover or cool cotton sheet. You won’t be disappointed by the range and quality which leans towards natural sustainable products with ethical production processes. From the success of The Bed Centre and support of the local community, owners Tony and Lucy Grande have been able to set up Make A Smile a popular local non-profit charity that supports various children’s homes on the Costa Blanca and in 2017 they opened a recycle centre and charity shop in Teulada (Amigos de Make A Smile). “Being able to put back in to our community and give kids in care the opportunity for a better future is so rewarding.” said Tony Grande. The Bed Centre continues to be focussed on giving you a great night’s sleep in a place where dreams begin and will continue to give great advice, wonderful beds and service with a smile. So here’s to the future and hopefully we can all help to keep our local small businesses going…. otherwise we’ll definitely miss the personal service and smiles! ● The Bed Centre, CC Biblos, Local 8, Urb. Product is key but prep is important

When we design, build, and create an artificial grass area, we quote into the area everything that is required, sometimes it means removing plants, taking levels down, building levels up, whatever we have to do to make that area the best it can be for that client. All this work falls under the bracket of prep. I really want to bring this to our potential client’s attention. It doesn’t matter if someone claims to have the best grass, or the cheapest price because it will still look bad if it isn’t laid correctly and more importantly if the base and prepared ground it goes onto isn’t correct. This is why clients have to be very careful to read the quote they receive for an artificial grass area, it's one thing if the grass is being laid onto concrete or an existing terrace, but if it is going in a garden or replacing and existing lawn then the prep work has to be done correctly. Failure to do so will end up with an unsatisfactory look and for sure an unhappy client. I have a hot tip for you. If you want artificial grass to look good, it cannot go onto just membrane on top of soil. If you are having a quote done for this and a contractor is stating prep, and that’s all it says, then ask them and delve into the details a lot more. Our quotes are clear as to what will happen, and the amounts of materials used. As I’ve said before many of our happy clients have always stated when we have finished a job that we did a lot more work than they expected, that’s because a proper job has been done. If anyone thinks it’s a case of turning up and rolling some grass out, then they are sadly mistaken. I am currently speaking with a client who doesn’t want some golf putt grass because he had some installed in the UK and because they did such a bad job it has diminished his expectations, and so he doesn’t want the product again. This is something that drives me mad, poor quality product combined with poor prep and install = unhappy clients and worse, a client that doesn’t have faith in a product - for me that is the bigger shame. I have spoken with lots of people over the years and I know the only reason they don’t want artificial grass is purely because they have seen other contractors’ poor work and or bad product. We are not in this business to make a quick buck, it’s about having clients who are happy and love their artificial grass lawn for years to come, and who are more than happy to refer us and the product. So, make sure that any quote you get comes from a company who cares about their product, the way it looks and the fact that they want happy clients before speaking to anyone else about Artificial Grass in Spain. ● For more information please give us a call on 696 283 704, or visit www.artificial-grass-spain.com

Giant sculptures turn street into open-air exhibition

Giant steel and copper sculptures are being exhibited in Explanada Cervantes between Dénia port and the town centre.

The works of art weighing up to five tons and are around four metres tall have been created by Asturian artist Juan Méjica. The seven pieces depict an Iberian horse, Spanish bull, tree totem tribute to the yew, a magical and totemic tree in Asturian lands - Asturcón horse, head totem, woman of the sun and a boat. The sculptures alternate between abstract and figurative with a special emphasis on the mythical, magical and symbolic. They are intended to provide food for thought but the artist also said they are designed to be touched and for children to climb up and enjoy. Juan Méjica’s monumental sculptures have been exhibited in 51 cities for 12 years. They will remain in Dénia until July 3. ● Article by Sarah Farrell www.sarahswritestuff.com

Jávea U3A President’s appeal for help Report and photo by Ian Rogerson

Jávea U3A elected a new President at their AGM, held at the Parador hotel Vice-President Claude Grealy was voted in to succeed Mike Cox, who has retired from the post after serving the committee for 14 years as President, Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer. Long-term U3A member Krystyna Stefanczyk was elected Vice-President. The full committee is: President Claude Grealy; Vice-President Krystyna Stefanczyk; Secretary Margaret March; Treasurer Sally Rush; Groups Coordinator Mike Frost; Membership Secretary Henrik Rasmussen. Ian Rogerson, who decided not to seek re-election as Communications Officer, has agreed to stay on as Publicity Officer in a non-executive role. He and his wife, Jacqui, will also continue to keep members informed of news and events on the U3A’s website and Facebook page. In his first address to members at the AGM, Claude reflected on the last two years of the Covid pandemic and how it had curtailed U3A events, but expressed optimism for the future. “Two years of the pandemic has been too long,” he said. “Next month masks will go and soon the pandemic will be over. Hopefully more people, especially the very nervous, will be able to venture out again.” He appealed for more people to come forward as volunteers and help in any way they can – big or small - in the running of our “wonderful” association. “The committee has worked hard to get things right,” Claude added. “Could we do better? Of course we could do better, especially with more helpers!” With the current membership at over 1,400, Claude’s appeal should be easily answered. our ARIES It may be a good idea to try something new to keep your mind active as you are starting to get a bit bored with your life as it is at the moment. Learning a new skill or hobby will not only bring you the enjoyment of it, but also means meeting a new group of friends. TAURUS Family conflicts keep cropping up even though everyone knows what it will take to solve the problem once and for all. Now is the time for you all to come together and work things out in order to move forward with more harmony. GEMINI Talking things through will help you sort out an issue you are struggling with. Your independence could cause problems with the rest of the team in the workplace so think before you act alone. CANCER Stop trying to solve all the problems, overburdening yourself with everyone else’s issues is only going to drag you down. Now is a good time to start with some home improvements. LEO Friendships are being tested and only the truly strong ones will survive. It has been on the cards for a long time and going forward will make things so much easier without the friction which was becoming the norm. VIRGO Your diplomacy will be tested in the workplace as other members of the team feel they are not being heard. Working as a solid team is stronger than having underlying issues which sabotage moving forward.

oroscope LIBRA You find yourself in a stalemate situation with someone. You need to decide how important they are to you and your future before you make your move. The most important thing is to bring harmony back into your life, with or without them. SCORPIO Flexibility will be your winning card this month and will make you stand out above the rest. Your helpfulness will not go unnoticed and will have a massive impact on one special person. SAGITTARIUS Challenges seems to appear from all sides this month but whatever they may be you face them with a smile and organisation to get through them all. A simmering conflict needs your attention before it explodes. CAPRICORN Other people’s feelings need to be taken into account before you make a decision which could have dramatic consequences. Don’t make any hasty decisions this month, think things through thoroughly. AQUARIUS You have been so sure of the support that you have been taking it a little bit for granted. Showing just how much it means to you will give a well earned boost to the team. It will also start the ideas flowing again. PISCES It will be a quieter month all round and should give you lots of time to recharge the batteries and have some down time. Using this time wisely will mean that you are ready for anything when it starts getting busier. Planning ahead is the key.

IT’S NOT JUST TCHAIKOVSKY, a lecture on ballet music by Nigel Bates. DATE: Thursday 5 May, 2022, 11am, Salones Canor, Cami del Assagador de Canor, Teulada. Doors open at 10am for registration and coffee. Complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks are provided after the lecture. Admission is free for members (annual fee 50€) and 15€ for visitors. This is a wide-ranging exploration of music chosen by ballet choreographers throughout the years, proving that the right composition, moves and designs can create modern masterpieces and timeless classics. We travel from the grandness of Imperial Russia with the creation of Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and other established and popular works to the current modern repertoire of the Royal Ballet, exploring the challenges met by both composers and choreographers. Nigel Bates has been a performer for more than 40 years in and out of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, including 17 years as Principal Percussionist with the Orchestra and eight years as the Music Administrator of The Royal Ballet. Even the Scots Guards have benefitted from his work with them as did the Save the Children Charity. Broadcasting has also featured in Nigel's portfolio as he has been a producer for both the BBC's Maestro at the Opera and Pappano's Classical Voices documentary series, plus on the airwaves with Australian Radio. Roll out the red carpet for Alicante Film Festival

T

he scene is being set for the 19th Alicante Film Festival being held from Saturday May 21 to Saturday May 28.

The festival has already been launched with the presentation of its poster paying homage to a milestone in cinema, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the blue of the Alicante sea and sky. The designer Aitor Errazquin explained: “The poster’s design is an abstract set of tributes: both to the cinema and to the city of Alicante that hosts this festival. On the one hand, reference is made to Discovery's onboard computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey, that 'eye' converted here into a warm and friendly look at the Alicante sun, and at the heat that its city projects and that welcomes thousands of people who are passionate about the culture.” The waves of the sea and those depicted in the design of La Explanada in Alicante are represented in the bottom half of the poster. As well as the award ceremony, 66 short films from 22 countries and eight Spanish-produced feature films will compete in this year’s Alicante Film Festival. Among the award winners is Malaga-born Dani Rovira who will receive the City of Alicante Award that honours the career of young actors and actresses. The award to the actor, comedian and presenter will be made at the opening gala on May 21 at the Teatro Principal. Article by Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.com
