Is chocolate good for our eyes?
While we all know too much fat and sugar is bad for our health – there can be some benefits to chocolate in moderation. And, when it comes to our eyes, dark chocolate is best.
Giles Edmonds, Specsavers clinical services director, explains: ‘As dark chocolate has higher proportions of cocoa in it, it is a much better alternative to milk and white varieties.
‘Although often still high in sugar and fat, when eaten in moderation it can be a good source of iron, copper, magnesium, zinc and also offers a range of antioxidants, flavonoids and flavone, which can be of benefit to eye health.
‘In fact, a study by a school of optometry in Texas1 showed that dark chocolate can help to improve visual perception. It revealed that consuming dark chocolate improves the ability to see low- and high-contrast targets. Copper, which is also found within dark chocolate, has also been shown to help protect against optic nerve damage2.’
Mr Edmonds adds: ‘Another vitamin which can be found in good quality dark chocolate, is vitamin A. This is a vitamin which contributes greatly to healthy eyesight. It can help us to see in low-light conditions and also supports the function of the cornea, which is the protective outer layer of the eye. Without enough vitamin A you may find that your eyes don’t produce enough moisture to stay lubricated which can often cause discomfort3.’
While evidence suggests there are some health benefits to be had with chocolate, it is important to maintain a well-balanced and healthy diet to ensure you’re getting all the nutrients your body needs.

How wonderful that people are travelling again with ease, confidence and enjoyment.
And so the Lewis Capaldi saga continues as now he has announced he will return to Spain in September to play the concerts he had to cancel. The big decision now is whether we go back to Madrid to see him or go to Barcelona this time. It also means I have to start learning all the songs as I know I don't know them as well as darling daughter will expect me too. I will be keeping my windows up in the car whilst I practise, the world does not need to hear that!
This month we will be at the Homes, Gardens and Lifestyle Show and it would be lovely to see you there. With over 70 exhibitors there will be something to interest everyone. You can find more details in the magazine.
A big welcome to Kenny Corris who from this month will be bringing you your horoscopes, with the added bonus of being able to go online for a more detailed version.
It's local election month and this is the way to let them know what you want for your town during the next four years. Don't miss out on having your say and casting your vote.
Until next time, take care and be kind.

The Home Made Radio Telescope. Part 2 (even more ways to go crazy)
Last month I talked about how I started this project, and all my mistakes and frustrations just to hear a ping from meteorites as they enter Earth’s atmosphere. That eventual success, modest though it was made me eager to try something new with the various electronic gubbins that I had. What about Jupiter I thought, it's famous among amateur astronomers for having huge storms and pumping out a lot of radio noise.
All this was in the winter when Jupiter was high in the sky, a bold, beautiful planet loved by observers for its incredible cloud formations and sparkly little moons dancing around the planet. It was Galileo's discovery of those moons that lead to the understanding of how the solar system works, the heliocentric system with the Sun at the centre.
I've been looking at Jupiter through a telescope on and off for over 50 years, so I thought doing the same thing with my radio telescope should be easy. I was wrong, very wrong. The first problem is the antenna, to work properly and receive the weak signal an antenna had to be precisely made to work only at the frequency of Jupiter's storms, that's about 20mhz. There are several ways to do this, but it boils down to very expensive, or home made but huge. I'm a Yorkshire man so obviously the expensive option is out and I haven't been able to make the huge one yet. The only option was to cheat so after copious reading I carefully modified an old tv aerial following advice from someone who's already done this. By this time it was March and Jupiter was almost on the horizon at night and almost impossible to get a signal from. I'll have to wait until October for Jupiter to rise again in the night sky, or invest in a good tracking mount so it can be found in the daytime.
What's next? There's a very prominent thing in radio astronomy called the Hydrogen line, sounds boring doesn't it? If I can get a signal from that I can have a go at mapping part of the Milky Way, our galaxy and I'll really enjoy doing it.
This whole project is going to be a long term thing, and like most pastimes is only for the fun of doing it but I'm learning so much in the process and I'm getting an even greater sense of wonder at our universe. I'll return to radio astronomy later in the year and no doubt with another list of mistakes and bloopers.
Lastly, I've often been asked to recommend a book about starting observing with a telescope so here is my choice. 'Turn left at Orion', published by Cambridge university press. It's a good easy to follow guide.
Next month I'll be giving an update on what's happening in space exploration, there's a lot happening at the moment.

Financial Advice from our family to yours
Discretionary Fund Management – have you considered the benefits?
Many of our new clients initially reach out to us seeking better returns from their existing portfolios. This leads to a common discussion around different investment options the client has available to them and alternative ways of managing money.
In the investment world, there are two main styles of investment management; “active” and “passive” and as the name may suggest, an active style of investment management has more engagement, whilst a passive style of investment management takes a more relaxed approach.
Whilst there is no one size fits all, an increasingly popular way to invest is via a Discretionary Fund Manager (or “DFM” for short). A DFM will take an active approach to investment management and this could lead to better outcomes for the client – particularly in volatile times.
At Logic, we have seen first-hand the advantages of investors engaging with a DFM and believe the main benefits can be summarised as follows:
- Specialist investment management, aligned with the client’s attitude to risk.
- Clients benefit from the expertise of a team of investment specialists and fund managers.
- DFM´s have the ability to react quickly to market movements.
- Range of investment solutions, available in different currencies.
- Due to their size, DFM´s have a huge amount of research and analysis tools available, to help make investment decisions and build portfolios.
Due to these benefits, many clients believe they will be asked to pay a premium in fees each year in exchange for a DFM´s inclusion, but this is not always the case. When you have access to the whole of market like we do, there are often some very attractive and suitable solutions which the client may not be aware of.
This once again reemphasises the importance of reviewing portfolios regularly. In our opinion, this will give you the best chance of achieving your financial goals.
If you would like to discuss investment options available to you, or would like a second opinion on your existing investments, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

My Feet Are Ugly! Bunions Be Gone!
When it comes to looking after your health, it’s easy to forget about your feet. But healthy feet are an important part of our overall wellbeing, as foot problems can have a huge negative impact on our quality of life.
For example, bunions are an ailment that can affect all ages not just the older generation. Otherwise known as Hallux Valgus, bunions are in fact the most common progressive foot deformity, in which the big toe joint is affected, causing pain and functional disability of the foot.
Fortunately, it is possible to treat this through minimally invasive surgery. The surgery is performed to straighten the big toe and correct claw toes when necessary, helping you to regain your aesthetically pleasing feet.
The surgery is performed, not only to give the foot a more pleasing appearance, but also to restore the alignment of the bones. Correcting weight distribution on the foot will allow you to walk pain free, and to be able to wear your shoes comfortably again. It is medically justified to perform hallux valgus surgery when the bunion restricts activity, so if you want to get rid of that foot pain, make an appointment now at Clinica Britannia to assess if surgery is a valid option for you.

12 THINGS BOTOX CAN DO OTHER THAN RELAX FACIAL WRINKLES
1.MANAGE ACNE (OVER 20S)
Botox for acne reduction works because it stops the production of sebum in the face (which is the main cause of acne) and so can treat large pores and breakouts.
2. TEMPORARY FACE LIFT
Botox relaxes muscles in the face around the mouth and jawline to give a refreshed look
3. BOTOX NOSE JOB
The muscles in the nose are relaxed so no more creases and down turning of the nose. The nose looks finer, smaller and straighter.
4. SOFTEN YOUR JAWLINE AND CHIN
The chin with age becomes pitted and orange peel like, Botox creates a smoother appearance and sharper, younger profile.
5. TIGHTEN JOWLS
Contrary to popular belief Botox stops the pull of the neck on the jowls and gives a younger profile.
6. THE LIP FLIP
Botox around the lips gives poutier lips with a natural look.
7. SMOOTH YOUR NECK
The Nefertiti lift – no more necklace lines or bands on the neck giving the turkey neck.
9. STOP CHRONIC MIGRAINES
By injecting into key muscles in the jaw and frown there is relief for this debilitating condition.
10. CALM EXCESSIVE SWEATING
Botox can be injected in the hair and under arm area to stop excessive sweating.
11. NECK PAIN
Muscles in the neck are relaxed so no more neck pain.
12. SLIM CALVES AND KNEES (LEG MUSCLES)
Men and women who are self-conscious about their overdeveloped calf and upper leg muscles can have the muscles relaxed with Botox so they diminish in size.
8. YOUTH-IFY YOUR DÉCOLLETÉ
Botox injections can help treat crepey skin in the chest area, making lines look less pronounced.

Record-breaking month for Alicante airport
Alicante-Elche airport continues to break records with more than one million passengers in March, according to the latest statistics. The figures are nearly five per cent higher than those registered in the same period before the pandemic and place the airport as the seventh busiest in Spain.
In March, 1,045,004 passengers flew in or out of the AlicanteElche Miguel Hernández Airport, an increase of 4.9% compared to travellers for the same period in 2019, before Covid, and 25.8% up on the same month last year. Of the total passengers in March, 1,043,730 were commercial passengers, of which 889,105 travelled on international flights, a growth of 3.9% compared to March 2019 and 26.2% more than in 2022. Domestic flights were also up with 154,625 passengers, 10.6% more than before the pandemic and 23.4% more than last year.
Of the international travellers in March, the United Kingdom is top of the league with 375,537 passengers; followed by the Netherlands with 86,044; Belgium with 67,067; Norway with 50,447; Germany with 44,983, and Sweden with 39,900 passenger numbers.
Figures for the five days over Easter weekend show a total of 1,534 flights with 276,000 passengers.
Furthermore, a train connection with the Alicante-Elche airport is considered a ‘priority’ by the European Parliament and could access European funding. The Transport Commission has agreed to include the commuter line between Alicante and San Isidro, with the connection to the airport, within the Trans-European Transport Network of the Mediterranean Corridor. At present, the closest train station to the airport is at Torrellano, around three kilometres from the terminal.

U3A Denia Easter Ball
A wonderful evening was had by members and guests at the U3A Denia Easter Ball held on Saturday 8th April at El Poblet Eventos in Denia, a beautiful venue which is located on the coast road between Denia and Jávea.
Dinner was a sumptuous affair with a six-course delight, all cooked to perfection and presented with style to the 90 people in attendance.
Music, provided by the talented Matt Mason during the evening, had everyone dancing away to a great selection of music from the 1950s through to the modern day.
'We will be back' was the overwhelming comment of the night.
The photos show U3A Denia committee members, from right to left Ginny Whitehead, Travel Leader, Richard Millington, President and Cazzie Millington Vice President, guests enjoying the evening and The President's table.
Terracotta Warriors in Alicante attract thousands of visitors
Article by Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.com
An exhibition starring China’s impressive Terracotta Warriors is attracting thousands of visitors to Alicante. The legacy of the Qin and Han dynasties, ‘China. The Warriors of Xi'an’ exhibition at the city’s MARQ museum drew in more than 10,600 visitors from across the world in its opening 15 days.
The exhibition in Alicante includes more than 100 original pieces, many of them being exhibited for the first time outside of China, as well as nine statues and a horse. They can be seen at the archaeological museum until January 2024.
It is widely considered that the scale and importance of the Han Dynasty is comparable to that of the Roman Empire. As well as the dramatic exhibits, graphic designs and videos invite the visitor to reflect on both empires in an increasingly globalised world
To meet demand, MARQ has set up a programme of guided tours in Spanish, Valencian, English and French as well as dramatised shows. Tickets can be booked through the website https://marqalicante.com.
On the MARQ website, Marcos Martinón-Torres, Professor Cambridge University Professor and Exhibition Commissioner, wrote: "Xi'an's Terracotta Army is one of the most stunning archaeological discoveries of all time. Created more than 2,000 years ago by order of China's first emperor, Xi'an's warriors are recognised as the eighth Wonder of the World.”
Alicante film festival celebrates its 20th anniversary
Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar will receive the prestigious Lucentum Award, which honours the career of Spanish directors, at this year’s Alicante International Film Festival.
The Spanish-Chilean director has won nine Goyas including the best director award for his film The Others starring Nicole Kidman and Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for The Sea Inside starring Javier Bardem.
Alejandro Amenábar told the media it was wonderful to receive this tribute from the Alicante Film Festival, especially for his mother who lives in the Alicante area.
The director will pick up the award on Saturday June 3 at the festival’s inaugural gala at the Teatro Principal in Alicante. As part of its tribute to the award-winner, the festival will screen his films including Open Your Eyes, The Others and The Sea Inside.
Alicante Film Festival, from June 3 to June 10, showcases dozens of short films and feature films from around the world. This year, there is a new section, Fashion Cinema, paying tribute to the costume designers. Wardrobe director Sonia Grande - who has worked with top film directors such as Alejandro Amenábar, Pedro Almodóvar and Woody Allen - will receive an award.

Why Business Networking is Good for Sole Traders (Autonomos)
As a sole trader (Autonomo), you might wonder if networking is worth your time and effort. However, networking can be a powerful way to grow your business and achieve your goals. Networking can help you:
- Find more leads and opportunities. By meeting and connecting with others, you can showcase your products or services, get referrals and find new customers.
- Learn from others and improve your skills. By interacting with other professionals, you can gain valuable insights, tips and advice that can help you solve problems, overcome challenges and enhance your performance.
- Build relationships and trust. By networking regularly and consistently, you can establish rapport and trust with your contacts, which can lead to long-term and loyal partnerships. You can also benefit from the support, encouragement and feedback of other like-minded business owners who understand your struggles and successes.
- Increase your visibility and exposure. By attending events, joining groups and participating in online platforms, you can raise awareness of your brand and profile among potential customers. You can also showcase your achievements, awards and testimonials to boost your credibility and attract more attention.
CBBA - the Leading Business Networking and Referrals organisation in the Costa Blanca
One of the best ways to start networking is to join a reputable and established business group that can offer you professional, reliable and useful contacts in your area. One such group is the Costa Blanca Business Association (CBBA), which has been operating since 2006.
The CBBA meets every fortnight to exchange referrals, share information and support each other. The CBBA also organises workshops, seminars and social events to help its members learn new skills, stay updated on local developments and have fun. Through its highly effective referrals process, CBBA estimates to have shared over 500,000€ of business in one year among its members.
If you are interested in joining the CBBA or attending one of their meetings as a visitor, you can visit their website www.cbba.es for more information or find them on Facebook.

U3A MARINA BAIXA ORANGE BLOSSOM PICNIC
On Monday 10 April 16 members enjoyed a picnic overlooking the gorge between Polop and La Nucía where the air was filled with the scent of orange blossom.
This was a new venue for U3A and one that had been recommended by the President's wife, Susan, who had found it on a recent Sunday stroll. The weather was again beautiful and a lovely afternoon was spent chatting with friends and trying to complete a quiz all about sweets and chocolate. Thanks to Group Leader, Hazel Layt, for providing the quiz which certainly got the grey matter working! There will not be a picnic in May due to the Coronation Garden Party on 7 May so the next picnic will be on Monday 12 June, venue to be announced.
If you would like to become a member why not go along to the next monthly meeting at the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi. Membership costs just 10€ for the year.

Tired Old Terraces
If your terrace has patchy, broken and /or different colour tiles then we have the answer for you. We have done several projects now where clients have asked us to put down our artificial grass around their pool terraces and with great results, even if I do say so myself.
For these clients it was a great option as their current terrace was looking old, with different coloured and styles of tiles and some broken and loose tiles and grass was a great feasible option to solve their terrace woes. One of the things that really amazed me was how much it seemed to bring the whole garden to life. Artificial grass may be artificial, but it's designed and made to look as natural and as lovely as a perfectly manicured lawn, and those look great in any garden. But laying it into a garden space like a terrace, especially where the tiles were broken and looked odd to each other, seamlessly stitched the whole view of the garden together creating a safe none slip, lush looking garden all in one throw of the dice.
We have had other clients add our artificial grass onto perfectly fine terraces as well, just because again, that splash of green can sometimes be so much more friendly looking than acres of tiles, especially if you’re not a fan of the colour of your tiles. Another positive to our grass installs is because of the glue we use, if you sell the house and the new owner wants to remove the grass, then it can be done and the glue can be cleaned so it doesn’t damage your existing surface either, giving great future flexibility.
So turn your horrible old terrace or dingy back corners of garden into lush green spaces with no hassle or watering - perfect year round comfort and green in your garden with Artificial Grass Spain.

A Costa Blanca choir is grasping the digital age in a big way
The English Choir, which rehearses every week in Teulada and recruits its members from a large part of the Costa Blanca, is using technology more and more as an aid to preparing for concerts, improving their performances, overcoming the 90-day residency rule, accessing music - and now they are also selling tickets online.
Tickets are now available online for their next concert on May 10th at La Senieta in Moraira.
A driving force behind the modern approach to an old form of entertainment is John Oliver Edwards, who, luck will have it, also runs a tech company in the Costa Blanca.
"We have introduced some very useful high-tech aids for the members, who have accepted the changes admirably" said John. "If the tools are out there, we might as well use them" he added.
Choir President John Turner, said: "It has been a very interesting learning curve. Some members are now just using iPads to refer to their music at rehearsals. Paper is going out of the window!
"The methods we are using are modern, but that is not preventing us from producing some good, old-fashioned quality music" he added.
Their next concert, "Rhythm!", covers some of the most respected composers of the 1930s and 40s. People like Gershwin, Cole Porter, Bernstein and Irving Berlin..
After the La Senieta concert, the choir's next date will be the Moors and Christians concert in the church at Moraira on Monday, June 12th. So now people wanting tickets have only to look for www.englishchoir.com.

MARINA ALTA COSTA BLANCA FLORAL CLUB
Our final demonstration before our summer break is with a club favourite David Thomson. David was last with us in November 2021 and by popular demand is making a return visit on Thursday 25 May and his title is “Spring into Summer”.
David's involvement in the flower world was triggered by his after-school delivery job in a prestigious Glasgow flower shop. Taking up a career in the legal profession, David moved to England and began floristry evening classes as a hobby, whilst working as a Property Lawyer in Essex. David decided to expand that hobby and obtained his City and Guilds Floristry qualification at Southwark College in London after which he attended Writtle College near Chelmsford, where he obtained the Society of Floristry ICSF qualification. This led to him teaching evening classes at the College (having also obtained the City and Guilds Adult Teaching Certificate) and it was as a result of this teaching that he first became involved in flower demonstrations. He became a NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies) Area Demonstrator which took him all over the East of England and beyond and in 2007, became a NAFAS National Demonstrator. Having now given up the Law, David travels extensively around the United Kingdom and abroad, demonstrating and teaching as well as taking part in Flower Arranging Competitions.
David has, in addition, taken on many commercial commissions including the Jewel House at the Tower of London, Kensington Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral and is also well known for his floral wedding artistry. We meet at The Salon de Actos, La Senieta, Moraira. Our doors open at 2.15pm and the demonstration starts at 3pm. Entrance Members 7€, Visitors 10€. There is plenty of parking in the large free car park. We look forward to seeing you. For further information visit our website www.marinaaltafloralclub.com and you can also follow us on Facebook.
WOMEN ARTISTS OF THE MARINA ALTA
Spot the 13 differences
(answers in the classified pages)
Javea Golf Club and Restaurant hosted an exciting Art Exhibition last month. Town Hall dignitaries gathered together to celebrate 8 talented women artists from 5 different nationalities and all resident in the Marina Alta. Stunning colour and patterns, detailed portraits and even Marilyn Monroe and Amy Winehouse made an appearance. Abstract art, modern realism, intricate patterns and peaceful landscapes mingled with haunting portraits of women, all painted right here in the Marina Alta. Visitors were taken aback by the variety and vigour on display. The eight artists were Sandi Goodwin, Susan Hankey, Frances Jones, Emma Jane Lawton, Particia Leon, Anna Martynovska, Marion Oprel and Jing Xu-Koprio.
The local branch of the European Union of Women Mujeres en Igualdad Marina Alta organised the exhibition, not only to celebrate the artists and their work but to remind us all that women in Europe and here in Spain still lack equal opportunities, suffer discrimination, poor employment conditions and, of course, gender violence.
Their next meeting is to celebrate their 70 Anniversary of being founded in Austria and 40 years ago in Madrid. Women from different countries will speak on the changes women have experienced in their original home. All welcome on May 22 at the Golf Club and Restaurant 10.30 for 11.00. Walk Your Way Well
with Niamh O'Sheehan
Consistency is arguably the most important component when working to accomplish goals or to introduce a new level of fitness in our lives I cannot stress CONSISTENCY enough. It simply JUST WONT HAPPEN with the occasional walk or work-out. That's why I run a monthly "28 Day Step Count Challenge". To help introduce regular, repetitive, consistent walks. You have likely come across the phrase: consistency is key. This phrase rings true in all spheres of life because consistency leads to habits, and these habits eventually impact your productivity and performance. Making sense so far?
Here are my FOUR top pieces of advice to ensure you maintain consistency.
ISOLATE ONE GOAL: Developing consistency takes work. Dedication. It’s burdensome, especially at first. It takes a lot of energy, a finite resource. Don’t make the process even more challenging by trying to do too much all at once …The trick is to pick one goal to focus on at a time. What’s your biggest issue? What’s your most damaging inconsistency? Start there. Work at it. Stabilise. Then move on to your next goal. Having said that sometimes two goals work well in unison… for example walking often to help quit alcohol!
INCREMENTAL IMPROVEMENT: You’re not going to develop a positive, worthwhile habit overnight. Our brains don’t work that way. In fact, it could take weeks or months to permanently change your behaviour. Or maybe just 28 Days! That’s a lot of patience and focus. That’s a lot of work. Allow yourself to notice and celebrate the small wins, the incremental improvements you achieve along the way. They’ll keep you motivated.
FIGHT EMOTIONS: The brain is a taxing organ. It uses a lot of energy, which is why we sometimes feel mentally sluggish or lazy, especially when faced with a challenge, like consistency. Sometimes we really are tired. Sometimes, though, it’s a biological trick …Don’t fall for it. Push forward. Fight your emotions. If you don’t, you’ll stay stuck. Check out "The Chimp Paradox" to learn more.
DEAL WITH FAILURE: As you pursue your consistency goals, you will get tired. You will stumble. Whatever your goal may be, you’re bound to misstep from time to time – and that’s okay. Slipping on your habits doesn’t make you a failure. It makes you normal. What separates top performers from everyone else is that they get back on track quickly. Forgive your failures and keep moving forward. What else can you do?
The Gist: Consistency brings results. The results you want. Consistency brings confidence. The confidence to continue. Consistency breeds trust. Trust in the process. Trust in yourself. Are you consistent? Drop me a line if you'd like to learn more or are interested in the Walk Your Way Well 28 Step Day Challenge. WhatsApp +34 676 507 791.

Xàbia’s seafaring community spirit
By Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.com
Walking through the port of Xàbia it is difficult to miss the spikey, concrete structure that soars skyward, behind the shops and bars facing the seafront. The structure resembles the exposed prow of a huge wooden fishing boat but although this is the port of Xàbia, the building is not a seagoing vessel. The Nuestra Señora de Loreto is a place of worship, with its origins intricately linked to the spirit of mutual regard that has grown up between Xàbia’s locals and its international visitors over more than half a century.
The Church, built in 1967, also known as the Parroquia del Mar has won several national and international architectural awards over the years.
Our Nuestra Señora de Loreto was constructed on the site of an earlier place of worship until, in the 1960s, the parish priest Juan Celda, his local parishioners and a group of the new wave of people who had recently started to travel to Xàbia for holidays and more extended stays, saw the need to provide the port area with a larger Church to serve the growing community’s needs.
To meet the cost of construction, Mariano Navarro Rubio, an economist and Spain’s Minister of Finance between 1957 and 1965, came up with an innovative idea that involved Juan Celda convincing both locals and some of the new wave of vacationers to put their hands in their pockets. It was agreed that if a healthy portion of total building costs could be raised locally, the remainder would be paid by the Ministry of Finance. The collaboration, which illustrated to locals and visitors alike how both groups might benefit from a harmonious relationship, was a success; the funds were raised through mutual cooperation and the striking Nuestra Señora de Loreto is the result.
Designing the “new” Church to look like a boat was a move intended to celebrate the ancient fishing community of Xàbia. The head of the four-man architectural team that delivered the brief was Fernando García Ordóñez, an Asturian who did most of his professional work in Valencia and Xàbia.
Garcia Ordóñez and his team, worked hard to create a space where worshippers would feel they were inside a boat, when they entered its doors. Ordóñez and his team wanted the Church to be a space in which to find God, an area without corners, helping to create a rounded, softened, floating (or sailing) experience.
The whole construction is a unique study in architectural design which pays homage to the many generations of Xàbians who have sought their living from the sea over countless generations.
Seeing is believing and to share the exceptional holy and nautical experience created within Nuestra Señora de Loreto by Fernando García Ordóñez and his team, is an experience not to be missed.
Xàbia’s Nuestra Señora de Loreto Church is on Calle Pio X, in the heart of Xàbia’s Duanes de la Mar neighbourhood, a stone’s throw from Playa de la Grava beach.
Opening times are: 9am to 8pm, extended to 9pm in summer.

How Is Jalon Valley Help Funded
Part 2 of 3. Article written by Peter
Sockett
Last month I described what Jalon Valley Help does to help people in need in the ‘Valley’, actually the Jalon & Orba valleys. This month I am addressing how this charitable organisation is funded, in order to provide this help to anyone in need in our community, irrespective of age or nationality.
As detailed last month JVH is a support organisation providing a wide range of locally based support, mainly with a medical bias. All of the tasks described last month require funding and personnel in order that they may be successfully administered.
In order to raise money Jalon Valley Help is very pro-active in addressing their main funding streams through:
- JVH shops in the three towns of Jalon/ Alcalali/ Orba where items (from clothes/ shoes/ bedding/ furniture/ brica-brac) which have been donated are resold, as well as cards and calendars/books etc.
- JVH organise fundraising events (from quizzes/ coffee mornings/ dinner events with entertainment/ the very popular bring-your-own picnics with musical support of major local singing groups).
In addition they have the following donation streams:
- ‘Friends of JVH’ for anyone who can make a regular donation, from as little as 5€ per month.
- Collection tins, for everyone to gather their loose change throughout the weeks or after each shopping trip (just the cost of one coffee a week can amount to more than 100€ by the end of the year).
- Cash donations are always welcome, either from individuals, businesses or organisations and provide a very important contribution to the funding of the JVH help activities.
As you will appreciate these funding streams all require the services of committed volunteers to ensure their success and need to be sufficient to fund all of the charity’s services. Could you be a part of this friendly locally based charity?
We all have something to give, so let’s not put off volunteering until a friend/ family member needs JVH’s help. Let’s volunteer our services today.
See our website www.jalonvalleyhelp.com for details of the amazing things JVH do within our communities and call Pam Brooks, JVH President, on 634 310 415 to discuss how you can help with time or donations.

Feed the Stray Cats Campaign
The CumbreCats and Gatos Felices is proud to announce the launch of a joint campaign, Feed the Stray Cats.
The initiative aims to address the issue of stray cats by raising awareness and funds to ensure that these animals are properly fed and that their caretakers are not always paying!
The Cumbre Cats Control Campaign is an Initiative created by a group of concerned residents from the urbanisation of Benitachell called Cumbre del Sol.
Stray cats are a common sight in many places across Spain. While some people view them as a nuisance, others recognise the importance of caring for these animals. Unfortunately, it can be difficult for individuals or even one community to take on this responsibility alone.
That's where the "Feed the Stray Cats" campaign comes in. The campaign aims to bring together two communities: those who care for the welfare of stray cats and those who want to contribute to this cause.
By working together, these two communities can help ensure that stray cats are properly fed, and their basic needs are met.
The campaign is built around the idea that small acts of kindness can make a big difference. By donating even a small amount, individuals can help ensure that stray cats have access to food and water.
"We believe that every animal deserves to be treated with kindness and respect, and that includes stray cats," said Karla Darocas, the CumbreCats spokesperson.
"By launching the Feed the Stray Cats campaign, we hope to create a sense of community and shared responsibility around this issue. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these animals."
The campaign is not only a way to help stray cats but also an opportunity for individuals and communities to come together and make a positive impact.
Look for cat food collection points throughout the village. Contact: Karla Darocas, CumbreCats Control, CumbreCats@gmail.com

Helen & Lee Tarrant are the owners of the Pub Delfin in Calpe. They are originally from Essex in the UK and in that area had defibrillators in every town funded by Katie's heart appeal supported by the Brompton hospital. As a previous nurse in the UK, Helen was passionate about having this important equipment in their Bar/Restaurant.
Along with the community, the Pub Delfín committed team fund raised and last July, Sarah, a valued member of the team, decided she would have her very, very long hair all shaved off. This big day helped to raise the huge amount of money required to make the purchase. Although they wanted this equipment on the outside wall of the bar, locked up and connected to 112 and insured, this hasn't been possible due to bureaucracy, so they now have had this life saving equipment installed inside. The research was carried out to ensure the defibrillator was installed professionally, insured and training given to 3 staff.
Congratulations to all involved and although it is a great reassurance to have the defibrillator in the bar, they all hope it never has to be put to use.
