The importance of eye tests this World Sight Day
EXPERTS are reminding people of the importance of regular eye tests to support World Sight Day (10 October) and sharing the connection between diabetes and vision loss.
The advice comes from Specsavers Ópticas on the Costa Blanca as part of their awareness raising activities for the research charity DiabetesCERO. Chantelle Hayward from Specsavers Ópticas in Calpe explains that many people with diabetes do not get any symptoms, which means it can take up to 10 years before they are diagnosed¹. However, if it is left untreated it can cause damage to the eyes, heart, kidneys, and feet.
Chantelle explains: ‘14.8% of adults in Spain are living with diabetes, over 5 million people². Almost 1 in 2 adults (44%) with diabetes remain undiagnosed³. This means that worldwide there are 240 million people who are at risk of developing serious eye health complications and even sight loss.
‘Diabetes is one of the fastest growing health conditions today – fuelled by record levels of obesity, excessive sugar consumption and sedentary lifestyles. If we continue to ignore the risk of developing type 2 diabetes as a result, we can only expect to see the number of cases escalate.’
Around 1 in 3 people with diabetes develop some form of eye health complication, according to the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF)⁴.
How diabetes affects your eyes
A complication of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, which can occur when high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the back of the eye. If left untreated it can cause blindness.
Chantelle adds: ‘Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in working age adults, even in developed countries⁵, so it’s hugely important that diabetes is detected early and monitored correctly to minimise the risk of avoidable sight loss.
‘The connection between diabetes and sight loss has led us to choose the charity DiabetesCERO as our official charity for 2024. We’ve pledged to raise €5,000 for the charity in 2024 and want to educate and inform people in our community about the link between diabetes and vision loss. We encourage anyone with diabetes to ensure they carefully manage glucose levels to prevent health complications. They should also have regular eye tests, including the latest technology, to check the health of the eyes and identify any nerve damage early, before it affects their vision.’
There are collection tins in all nine Specsavers Ópticas stores in Spain, where donations can be made to help fund vital research into Type 1 Diabetes. To find your nearest store to donate, visit www.specsavers.es

Are you prepared to protect your family?
Life cover is essential for parents and anyone with financial dependents in your household. This type of policy is one of those things that just about everyone needs but far too few people actually have. It’s easy to put off purchasing a policy when you’re young and relatively healthy. But the longer you wait, the greater the chance of something happening before you get yourself coverage.
Losing a loved one leaves a hole in any family. With the right protection in place, if the worst were to happen, your loved ones could be financially protected with a lump sum. Having dependents doesn’t necessarily mean having children - even your partner or your family members could be financially dependent on you.
If you were to become critically ill and unable to earn a living, do you think your dependents would be able to get by or would they struggle without your added income? We can tailor the policy to include serious illness cover to provide an agreed sum payout should the unexpected happen. Other benefits can also be added to the policy including Permanent Absolute Disability, Death by Traffic Accident and Permanent Absolute Disability due to a Traffic Accident
Example: €100,000 Death only cover for a 50 year old male starts from as little as €27 per month. We also offer mortgage repayment protection cover which will pay off any mortgage debt you have on your house, keeping your family secure in their home if death occurred during the policy term.
You do need to be resident in Spain for these policies and there will be a simple health/medical questionnaire that you will need to complete online. These policies are available with monthly direct debit payments, and our policies will be in English.

October is an important month for us with lots going on. The Focus On Costa Blanca North magazine is celebrating its birthday. From humble beginnings in 1993 it has grown into a respected magazine by advertisers and readers alike. As a company along the way we have added three more publications and are proud to be supporting the community, now more than ever, 31 years later. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible.
Also this month is darling daughter's birthday, gorgeous granddaughter's birthday and super sister-in-laws birthday. Fortunately only one out of the three gets presents. At the end of the month is our local Moors and Christians so we will be doing a house swap with darling daughter and family as she is part of the event. With our apartment being above one of the groups 'kabila' where they party almost 24/7 for the week, and we need our sleep, it's a perfect swap - they are closer to their kabila and we are away from it all. Don't get me wrong, I love it and come into town to enjoy it - but glad to leave and sleep at their house each night....
This is then followed by Halloween - not sure who loves it the most. I think it is darling daughter over the grandchildren with her house decorations being something to behold including a giant spider which hangs down from the roof outside. We all get dressed up and join in the local charity event. Roll on November for a rest..... Until next time, take care and be kind.

GRASP THE VAST - IT'S A BLOOMING LONG WAY TO THE STARS
In last months 'how do we know that' I talked a bit about how we know what stars are made from, this month it's how to measure how far away they are.
It saddens me that even today many people have no idea of just how far it is to anywhere in space, but I am rather biased about astronomy. We don't use kilometres to talk about a star’s distance away, the numbers just get too big to be meaningful, we use light years. A light year is a measure of distance, not time, it is simply how far light can go in one year, so, how far is that? Everyone knows Jupiter is a very long way away, over 700 million kilometres but that's only about 39 light minutes. One light year is nearly 6 trillion kilometres, so how the heck can we measure anything so far away? Actually, there's several ways, but the first is really simple and you have probably noticed the basis of it in everyday life, it's called parallax.
Close one eye and stretch out your arm with a finger pointing upwards, now line up your finger with something, maybe a door edge. Now close the open eye and open the other one, you'll notice that the door edge seems to have moved, keep swapping eyes and the edge keeps moving. If you did that whilst sitting in a bar, don't blame me for the strange looks you're getting.
What's happening is probably obvious, each eye is seeing the door edge from a different angle because your eyes are a little way apart. If you did this scientifically, with lenses and something to measure the angles, you can work out the distance using the elementary maths you did at school, thank you trigonometry.
Of course, even a nearby star is a huge distance away, but there is a simple way of using this same method to measure the distance of quite a lot of stars, we just need to look much further apart than our eyes are. The Earth orbits (goes around) the Sun in one year, so every six months the Earth is on opposite sides. If we measure the angle of a nearby star at each of these positions, we have 2 angles measured about 300 million kilometres apart and that is big enough to get quite an accurate measurement. Needless to say, there is a lot more to this, for example stars all have their own movements, called proper motion, and maybe a star is at a difficult angle to observe. Then there's the problem of getting an accurate measurement through our atmosphere, the twinkling of a star makes measurement tricky. Fortunately professional astronomers are a clever lot and there are ways of allowing for these problems..... up to a point. In the 180 or so years since the first star's distance was measured a lot of work has been done, especially since special satellites were made to get more precise measurements. Where a big problem arises is with very distant stars, the angular measurements are too small to work, this is where one of the wonders of the universe comes to our rescue and we can measure the distance of really distant stars, but that will have to wait until next month.

Why is it important to remember your password?
Passwords protect your device or accounts. They keep your information private and safe from others. They need to be easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess or break. If someone discovered your password, they could gain access to sensitive information including your financial data.
We recommend to start a little book with all necessary and important passwords in it and then store it in a safe place. This way it will be easier for you to log-in, in case you have to change or renew your device.

Lumps or pain in the groin or near the navel can often be caused by a hernia. A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Here are some common types of hernias that might cause these symptoms:
1. Inguinal Hernia: This type occurs when fatty tissue or part of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall into the groin area. It’s more common in men and can cause a noticeable bulge and pain, especially when coughing, bending, or lifting.
2. Femoral Hernia: This happens when tissue pushes through into the upper thigh, just below the groin. It’s less common but can be more serious due to the risk of complications.
3. Umbilical Hernia: This type occurs near the navel and is more common in infants, but it can also affect adults. It happens when part of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall near the belly button.
Symptoms of hernias can include:
• A noticeable lump or bulge in the affected area.
• Pain or discomfort, especially when bending over, coughing, or lifting.
• A heavy or dragging sensation in the groin.
• Weakness or pressure in the groin.
If you suspect you have a hernia, contact us now at Clinica Britannia for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, as if left complications can occur which can become life threatening.

INHERITANCE TAX
In Spain, inheritance taxes are known as “Impuesto sobre Sucesiones y Donaciones” (ISD). These are levied on the transfer of assets from a deceased person to their heirs.
The tax system for inheritance can be complex because it is regulated by both national and autonomous regions rules, leading to variations in tax rates, deductions, and exemptions depending on where the inheritance is processed.
Here’s an overview on how inheritance taxes work:
1. Taxation Scope:
• Residents: Spanish residents are taxed on their worldwide assets inherited.
• Non-Residents: Non-residents are taxed only on assets located in Spain.
2. Tax Rates:
• The national tax rates range from 7.65% to 34%, depending on the value of the inheritance.
• Autonomous regions can modify these rates, often leading to lower effective tax rates, especially for close relatives like children and spouses.
3. Beneficiary Groups:
• Beneficiaries are classified into four groups based on their relationship with the deceased:
- Group I: Direct descendants (children under 21).
- Group II: Other descendants (children over 21), ascendants (parents, grandparents), and spouses.
- Group III: Siblings, aunts, uncles, in-laws, etc.
- Group IV: More distant relatives and non-relatives. Closer relatives generally receive more significant exemptions or reductions. Unmarried couples are considered Group IV heirs and pay significantly more tax than married couples.
4. Deductions and Exemptions:
• Regional Deductions: Each autonomous region can apply its own deductions and exemptions. For example, some regions offer a 99% reduction on inheritance taxes for direct descendants and spouses.
- Andalusia has a reduction of 1.000.000€ per heir and an allowance
of 99% of the rest for group I and II.
- The Comunidad Valencia has recently changed their system and now they include an allowance of 99% on the tax payable for beneficiaries in groups I and II.
• Primary Residence: Heirs (especially spouses and children) can receive significant reductions if the inheritance includes a primary residence, potentially reducing the taxable value by up to 95%.
• Family Businesses: There are often reductions available for inherited family businesses.
5. Payment and Deadlines
• Declaration: Heirs or their legal representatives, must submit an inheritance tax form and pay the tax within six months of the date of death. An extension of six months may be requested, but interest could be charged on the unpaid tax.
• Penalties: Failure to pay inheritance tax on time can result in penalties and interest on the unpaid amount.
In summary, Spanish inheritance taxes are elaborate and vary depending on the relationship between the heir and the deceased, the value of the inheritance, and the autonomous community’s regulations where the assets are based. Each person who receives the Spanish asset has to make a tax declaration and there is no free transfer of assets between spouses.
It is advisable to take professional advice in order to navigate the regional variations and ensure compliance with the laws.

Walk Your Way Well
with Niamh O'Sheehan
"Strutting Back into Shape: Restarting Your Walking Routine After a Long, Hot Summer"
Welcome back to the world of walking Dear Walk Your Way Wellers! After a long, sweltering summer of dodging the heat, it’s finally time to dust off those walking shoes and hit the hills. Getting back into your routine doesn’t have to feel like a chore — in fact, it can be fun and refreshing! Here’s how to restart your walking program with a spring in your step.
First, embrace the fresh start. Treat yourself to a new pair of hiking boots or trail shoes. Nature always looks wonderful as Autumn comes to visit. With the right gear and a positive mindset, you’ll be ready to conquer your local trails, one step at a time. Don’t forget to ease back into it; there’s no rush. Start with shorter walks and gradually increase your distance as your body re-adjusts to the movement. It's still warm so stay hydrated and lather on the suncream.
Remember, your friends are trying to re-start after the summer too. So, why not join forces? Walking with a buddy adds a layer of fun, and time flies when you’re catching up and sharing good vibes. If you prefer solo strolls, use the time to clear your head, listen to an audio book, or soak in the beauty of the outdoors. We love all that good stuff in the Walk Your Way Well community.
To keep things exciting, switch up your routes and explore new areas. Visit parks, beaches (now that they are quiet!) and local landmarks. Setting mini-goals will keep you motivated. Whether it’s walking three days a week or hitting a certain number of steps, celebrate every milestone with a little treat. If you'd like to join any of my walks or hikes I'd simply love to be part of your fitness and emotional health journey. Our walking community is friendly and fun. And we are so excited to get stuck in after the crazy summer temperatures.
October is MADE for walking. So, don't miss out. Drop me a text on WhatsApp for more information. I also offer 1-2-1 coaching if you are feeling stuck and need some help finding ways to motivate yourself back into action.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month
and so, we want to take this opportunity to talk about our boobies!
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. Early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes, so it's important to know the key symptoms. Even if you know all this, read on. You might learn something new. Common signs include a lump in the breast or underarm, changes in breast size or shape, dimpling or puckering of the skin, nipple discharge (other than breast milk), and persistent breast pain. You may also notice swelling, redness, or thickening of the breast skin. Don't ignore these symptoms, even if you feel embarrassed.
If you experience any of these symptoms, there's no need to panic. Not all breast changes indicate cancer, but it's crucial to see a healthcare professional for an evaluation as soon as possible. Remember, the doctor has seen lots of boobs before! Don't be shy. They may recommend a mammogram, ultrasound, or biopsy to determine if cancer is present.
If diagnosed early, breast cancer treatments can be very effective. Your doctor will help you choose the best treatment option based on your individual case. And we at Cancer Care Jávea are happy to hold your hand throughout this process.
Ageing comes under the spotlight in Alicante
More than a dozen world-class scientists and technologists are due to fly into Alicante this month to present revolutionary research into healthy ageing and longevity.
The third Longevity World Forum takes place at the Ilustre Colegio Oficial de Médicos de Alicante on October 17 and 18. One exciting topic coming under the microscope is the development of the first drug which could slow down the ageing process, improve the quality of life of older people and combat some age-related diseases such as cancer and fibrosis. As well as the biological side to ageing, the congress will also look at the socioeconomic implications, such as how income, education and social relationships have an impact on the life expectancy of older people.
Anyone interested in the subject, such as health professionals and researchers, students or e-health start-ups are welcome to attend the congress. Tickets are available from www.longevityworldforum.com.
For more information or support, please contact Cancer Care Jávea.
We are a local charity dedicated to providing assistance and guidance to those affected by cancer. We offer resources, support groups, and a caring community to help you navigate this difficult time.

How to love your skin after the menopause
Although life expectancy of women continues to rise, surprisingly the average age of the menopause has changed relatively little since prehistoric times.
This means that women spend most of their adult lives living with skin problems associated with the perimenopause (from 40), the menopause itself and the post menopause.
The fall in oestrogen levels and hormone imbalance that occurs after the menopause can lead to an array of undesirable visible effects on the skin:-
- Loss of skin elasticity which leads to sagging.
- Loss of moisture and thickness which leads to fine lines and wrinkles.
- Redness and broken blood vessels.
- Facial hair on the chin and upper lip.
- Uneven skin pigmentation.
- Appearance of skin tags and warts.
- Crepey skin on chest, arms and legs.
These effects drive most women to despair on looking in the mirror, but all these alien changes can be treated. A wide variety of different methods exist and usually a combination of these are required to achieve a youthful complexion once again.
Forget the lies that HRT increased cancer risk. This was an incomplete and rigged study done as a ploy to keep women down. From age 30 our oestrogen levels start to drop and plummet further in our 40s. Oestrogen is the hormone that keeps women’s skin soft, our hair healthy, our bones and organs healthy, without it, we develop early osteoporosis, strokes and wrinkly skin.
Testosterone – although a predominantly male hormone, it helps women with their physical strength, energy levels and sex drive.
DHEA – is another hormone our body requires to keep all our organs young and healthy and prevents premature aging. At Zen Smile Spa, British born Dr Carolyn Carbasse trained at Guy’s Hospital London and is specialised in anti-aging medicine.
Come to discuss the menopause in a hormone consultation and she will be able to give you all the tools required to treat the brown spots, saggy skin, jowls and wrinkles and within a few months you will rediscover your sprightly younger version of yourself.

Turkey teeth – what do you need to know?
You may have seen headlines like – Turkey teeth are ruining people’s smiles… Is it true?
What do you need to know if you were thinking about getting dental treatment abroad?
How can you save your teeth from disaster when looking for a smile makeover?
The problem
A TV documentary – and various stories shared across social media – have put a spotlight on the individuals who have travelled abroad for cosmetic dental treatment. There are many examples of individuals travelling overseas for crowns, having a significant portion of their teeth filed down in the process. Why is this a problem? For a start, you do not need to remove that much natural, healthy tooth tissue to achieve a stunning result. It is unnecessarily invasive and harmful long-term. This procedure can cause lasting sensitivity and pain and increases the risk of abscesses and devitalisation i.e. ‘death’ of the teeth.
Some stories suggest poor communication by the dental team who offer ‘veneers’ and then provide crowns. Veneers are far less invasive as they are roughly half as thick as crowns and simply attach onto the front of the teeth instead of needing lots of tooth structure destroyed. This means that veneers tend to be easier to repair or replace over time even though more technically demanding than the provision of crowns.
The other issue is that the quality of the dentistry provided has come into question. Not all countries have the same strict regulation and high standards that we have so the quality of products and techniques used may not be as good. Similarly, the aftercare or recourse will not be thorough because this would require patients to travel back at a later date for reviews – which is often not included in the original plan and therefore added expense for the patient.
The other main complaint is aesthetics, i.e the teeth look fake, too white, overbulked and hence such observations as…. "He doesn't need a torch at night anymore,"
"Let me get my sunglasses."
"Sure, I've seen you running at Aintree," Clinica Dental La Plaza is the answer.
In conclusion… if you are considering any aesthetic dental treatment we suggest you seek local advice before considering treatments overseas, or maybe come and see us first. We can help by giving all the options and helping you to make an informed decision.

CAPPED HI LIGHTS
WHO SHOULD HAVE CAPPED HI LIGHTS ?
Article supplied by MimisKru
Traditional Foil Highlights on very short hair just wouldn’t give a great result (Train Tracks come to mind), if the hair is very short it just shows lines where the foil has been. So, with short hair this is an alternative solution.
Thicker sections of hair can be pulled through the cap at the top of the head and then as the hair graduates shorter, finer pieces of hair are pulled out to soften and blend the hair softly to the shorter parts. Only one colour can be achieved, but the great thing with this technique, you can see the hair develop.
Also, if you’re not happy with the colour you can just wash the colour off the cap and re-apply another colour. So, great for colour correction and great for lifting out grey hair to a natural soft ash or golden blonde as it gives an all over natural hi light or low light close to the root result.
If the client only wants fine high lights/low lights and to have a mix of natural colour and coloured hair, it’s easier to see and apply and watch the colour developing for an even result. A great way to brighten up an ombré and not affect the root area. Another great thing about this technique also, is that it doesn’t take as long and is cheaper than foil hi lights.
But, it’s not for everyone; some hairdressers think of capped hi lights as being old fashioned. But, the truth of the matter is; these hairdressers just aren’t familiar with the technique.
It's not suitable for people with thick curly hair or long hair, as it can be very uncomfortable when pulling the hair through the cap, especially around the front and temples of the hair line or if the hair is covered in product. So, it's best carried out on clean hair. Another reason some hairdressers don’t like this technique is because they see it as unprofessional, as a lot of DIY home hairdressing uses this type of application. But are the results successful? I'll let you as the reader be the judge of that. Mimis Kru Hair and Beauty specialists in colour and colour correction. To Catch a Comet
Ten years ago in 2014, the European Space Agency's Rosetta mission captured the imagination of the world as it rendezvoused with Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and deployed a lander, Philae, to its surface for the first time.
To celebrate this anniversary, the Costa Blanca Astronomical Society are pleased to invite you to a talk about this extraordinary mission. The talk will be given by the Senior Advisor for Science & Exploration at the European Space Agency at the time, Mark McCaughrean.
He was responsible for communicating the results of ESA’s exploratory missions to the science community and the wider public. He has now retired from his post at ESA, and moved to Germany where he is a scientist at the Max-Planck-Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg.
He will give us a behind-the-scenes view of the mission – its history, the 10-year journey to reach the comet, and the exciting events that took place during more than 2 years of operations there, before ending in September 2016, when Rosetta joined Philae on the comet.
He will talk about some of the challenges and risks involved in the mission, and give some insights into the key scientific findings revealed to date about the formation of our solar system, the origins of water, and perhaps even life on Earth.
The talk will take place on Tuesday 29th October starting at 7pm at the Casa De Cultura in Denia – Salle de Actas on the first floor.
It is expected to last until 8:30pm, with time for questions. The talk will be given in English and all are welcome. There is no entrance fee and no reservations are necessary. We look forward to seeing you there.

SALTY WATER
At the time of writing this, things as regards to our water situation are looking very shaky. I won’t name any names as I wouldn’t want to get into the bad boy books, but currently in our general area the salt content in our water has reached illegal limits. It has certainly surpassed tolerable amounts, and as much as things are being done to look at helping to reduce the amount of salt content, that’s all it will do, reduce, it will not put the water back to what would be regarded as normal levels for us. The reason, as I understand it, for the high salt levels is simply the fact that we have not had anywhere near enough rain fall, and any water that is retrieved from borehole systems is becoming contaminated with sea water, as there isn't enough fresh water running through the rocks and into the strata, and eventually to the sea, so the flow is effectively reversing. This is not good for gardens, and especially your lawn, just in case you hadn’t realised salt will kill plants, and grass is a plant. If this problem persists then homeowners with irrigation and or lawn sprinkler systems may be instructed to turn them off. This is not a good situation for gardens. So, if you are contemplating renewing, repairing or installing a new natural lawn - don’t.
This really is not the time to do that. Have an artificial lawn that looks great and requires no care, no water, no chemicals and in the meantime, let's just hope we do get some rain over the winter period as our countryside really needs it.

Don’t Be Afraid to Perform CPR
If, while you are out with your family this weekend, one of them suddenly collapses in front of you, would you know what to do?
Would your First Aid CPR lessons come rushing back immediately — or would you call 112 and stand back in fear of doing something wrong?
Your answer could be the difference between life and death.
CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and can double or triple a person’s chance of survival, especially if performed within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest. There is less brain damage, a great likelihood of survival, and less heart tissue damage.
Far more damage comes from doing nothing.
Hands only CPR: Never do nothing
In 2012 The British Heart Foundation worked with Vinnie Jones to help teach the nation how to do Hands-only CPR. Watch the video on You Tube “Vinnie Jones - BHF hands only CPR”
Giving rescue breaths helps survival, but if you don’t want to give rescue breaths, Hands-only CPR is still likely to increase a person’s chance of survival. Never do nothing.
How to do Hands-only CPR
When somebody collapses in front of you, what do you do? Check the person over. If they are not responsive and not breathing, then their heart has stopped working and they are having a cardiac arrest.
Now, call 112 or if you are a member of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea (AAEdJ) then call our 24hr emergency helpline on 96 579 6099 and we will have one of our state-of-the-art ambulances (think mobile intensive care unit) immediately dispatched and on its way to you.
Then you do Hands-only CPR.
Lock your fingers together, knuckles up. Then push down, right on the top of the breastbone. Push down five or six centimetres. That’s about two inches. Push hard and fast about two times a second, like to the beat of Stayin’ Alive by The Bee Gees. Don’t worry about hurting someone. A cracked rib can be mended – just concentrate on saving a life.
Keep this up until the ambulance arrives.
So don’t forget. Check him or her over. Call 112 or the AAEdJ. Push hard and fast to Stayin’ Alive. It works.
Hands-only CPR. It’s not as hard as it looks.
Membership of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea is just €60 for a whole year for the whole family. We cover the vast majority of the Marina Alta area. To become a member please contact Laure Bolufer on 96 579 6099 (10am to 1pm every weekday). She is our Registration Manager, and she will work with you to pre-plan your address and a map / route into our systems to ensure swift arrival to your residence, even if it is inland. Email: amigos_europeos@yahoo.es.

In October Amata organises 4 Craft Fairs in Alicante province
The month of October will be a busy one for the organisers of the regional craft association Amata: almost every weekend they have to set up an Arts & Crafts fair in a different village or town in the province of Alicante. All of them with original hand made goods, nothing from a factory, nothing imported.
The first one is on 4, 5 and 6 October in Onil, where they form part of a big event to promote the village. “Onil es Mostra” offers, apart from the Arts & Crafts Fair, local specialities, processions, parades, a marathon, games for children, concerts and fireworks. This Fair is set up in medieval style around the Palace in the centre of the Old Town and opens on Friday afternoon at 6pm; on Saturday and Sunday from 11am until 2pm and in the evenings from 6pm onwards.
The following weekend, 11, 12 and 13 October, another Amata fair is held in the Port of Jávea. The fair is at the sea front and opens on Friday from 5 until 9pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 11am until 9pm, not closing at midday. This fair has its own page in Facebook and Instagram, where you can find more information. Look for javea.artesania.
The other two fairs are both during the last weekend of the month, one in Tibi, a little village not far from San Vicente del Raspeig on the road form Alicante to Alcoy and the other one in La Mata, just North of Torrevieja.
In Tibi the craft fair is set up on the promenade leading to the Ermita, a lovely chapel at the top of the village with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Opening times from 11am until 2pm and then again from 5 until 10pm; Friday the 25th only in the afternoon, from 6pm onwards. In Torrevieja you will find the stalls at the Plaza Encarnación Puchol and opening times are on Friday from 5 to 9pm; on Saturday and Sunday they open from 11am until 2pm and from 5 until 9pm, although on Sunday they might close a little earlier.
The participants will be different in each fair, although some artisans will come to two or more fairs. To summarise, you can visit an Amata fair:
- 4-6 October in Onil
- 11-13 October in the Port of Jávea
- 25-27 October in Tibi and La Mata (Torrevieja)
At the latest two weeks before the date of each fair you can find the programme under “Real Fairs” in https://www.puebloartesano.es/en.

The Albarda Garden
-at the forefront of conservation
By Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.com
Life can be hectic and at times we may find we need a place to recalibrate, somewhere to slow down and reflect, a place away from the bustling crowd and, how fortunate are we, that we have such a sanctuary within striking distance of Xàbia.
The Albarda Garden is recognised as a model of excellence in the world of Mediterranean gardens. Created in 1990, it demonstrates the great richness of the flora that thrive in our Costa Blanca climate.
With an area of 50,000m², the garden showcases more than 700 species of native plants, highlighting the diversity of our local flora in all its splendour.
The land on which the Albarda Garden now sits was previously an orchard of orange and lemon trees. In the 1980s, Valencian businessman Enrique Montoliu acquired the plot with the idea of converting it into a house and garden. Over time, his fairly straightforward plan developed into an ambitious project of conservation.
The garden is now managed by Fundem, the Enrique Montoliu Foundation - established in 1996 - with the strictest sustainability criteria. It is a reference model in the world of both public and private Mediterranean gardening.
World first for Benidorm
The world’s first pirate-themed resort with access to a zoo and water park is getting ready to welcome guests - in Benidorm.
Magic Pirates Island Resort is opening for business on April 30, 2025, with 270 themed cabins, three swimming pools with play areas including pirate ships, themed food and unlimited access to Aqua Natura water park and Terra Natura animal park, thanks to the partnership of Grupo Fuertes and Magic Costa Blanca.
In addition to its botanical biodiversity, L’Albarda lays claim to a formal garden, a variety of orchards, including apple, orange and lemon groves, exotic strains of palm trees, ferns and an abundance of protected species of little known flora.
Albarda’s numerous wild areas, boast a profusion of vividly coloured flowers and plants, allowed to re-seed and proliferate as nature intended. In other areas, there is more formality, among these the impressive recreation of the ancient Renaissance gardens of Valencia, which were widely influenced by Arab culture.
One area is particularly reminiscent of the Majorelle gardens in Marrakesh, designed by Yves St Laurent with its vibrant colour scheme of orange and blue.
Just such characteristics have brought recognition, accolades and awards to the Albarda Garden from highly regarded conservations bodies around the world.
Meander through its shaded pathways and you will find ponds covered in waterlilies, entertaining frogs, dragonflies and the occasional turtle. Various statues and sculptures are also dotted around the grounds; it seems there is always more to discover here and one can easily spend a couple of hours strolling quietly through the garden.
As well as being a beautiful, peaceful oasis, L’Albarda frequently plays host to concerts and other events, including book launches and painting exhibitions.
Up and coming events at the Albarda Gardens include a concert by the young chamber orchestra Marinae Ensemble on 20th October at 11am and a Christmas Market on 23rd and 24th November.
L’Albarda Garden is located in Pedreguer (Alicante-Spain) The address is: Urbanización La Sella, C/ Baix Vinalopó, nº 8.
The new resort, focusing on the needs of families with children, will take guests on a wonderful world of legendary pirates and their stories. There are also themed bars, buffets, restaurants and entertainment areas, including a large video games room. On top of this, there is the free and unlimited access to the water park and zoo, both of which are on the resort’s doorstep. Benidorm continues to be a hot destination for domestic and international tourists. According to figures from the hotel and tourism association for the Valencia region, Hosbec, hotel occupancy in the seaside resort of skyscrapers exceeded 86% in the first half of July. Of these, 57.3% were international tourists. This is not the only new attraction for Benidorm visitors. A super cypress labyrinth of more than 5,000 square metres, Mazeland, is due to open at the beginning of next year. The complex, next to the Sierra Helada Natural Park, is being managed by Laberinto Sierra Helada S.L. As well as the labyrinth created between more than 4,000 Mediterranean cypress trees, other attractions include a cafe, zip lines and an organic garden.

Get to know Altea’s new urban route panels and tourist signs
Altea is gearing up to mark 500 tourist attractions, council buildings and shops with pictograms that can be read by people with visual difficulties. Already 402 buildings and attractions have been signposted, so Altea is well on the way to reaching its target of 500 pictograms by the end of the year.
The Braille and high-relief pictograms, where the image extends out from the background, have been designed by Ilunion Accesibilidad, of the ONCE Social Group, to improve accessibility, especially for people with total or partial visual impairment and cognitive difficulties.
NaviLens QR codes have also been installed on urban route panels so that people with visual difficulties can use them.
Strategic points in the town, such as the town hall square, promenade and old town streets have had panels installed which describe the places and urban routes together with NaviLens QR codes so people with visual difficulties can also access them.
You can use a mobile phone camera to scan the codes without having to know precisely where they are placed; without the need to focus (unlike traditional QR codes); and without having to be up-close to the code - they can be scanned from a distance of several metres.
This month, Ilunion Accesibilidad is also holding awareness training courses for local police staff and the commercial and hospitality sectors.

Denia U3A Raise €1,500 for Red Cross
Denia U3A arranged an autumn picnic evening for Friday 6th September, when 120 members packed the beautiful Los Arcos gardens to raise money for the Cruz Roja Espanola [Red Cross], with The Entertainers providing a spectacular show, where their obvious enthusiasm and fun turned this into a celebratory evening. In the first set The Entertainers set two of their songs, Knocking on Heaven’s Door and I Know Him so Well, to the backing of Bob playing his acoustic guitar, Marilyn – as she is blond and curvy. An indication of the performance that was to come was also given by Jo & Marc in their singing of the Spanish song Quizas. The first set ended with a standing ovation for their choice of songs.
The second set opened with Proud Mary quickly followed by Hit the road Jack, to set the tone, but my eyes were on Marc - in his sequinned shirt – he is recognised for his super voice but obviously he was out to make an impression. Later Marc slipped off-stage only to reappear alongside Dolly and Gee in a pink shirt, opened to the waist, a big gold medallion and a curly brown wig to give us an inspired performance of Disco Inferno. The tone of fun and fast dancing was then set and the dance floor was never empty for the rest of the show.
At the end of the show Richard Millington, President of Denia U3A, and Cazzie Millington, Event Organiser, advised that €1,500 had been raised for the Red Cross for whom Ariane, a representative from Cruz Roja, thanked everyone and assured them that the money would be put to good use helping those persons in need.
The Entertainers sent us home very happy with a medley of songs from the Beatles and their enchanting version of Fix You.

Women and Ukraine: Personal Stories Behind the War – EUWMA Event on 25 October
After the thought-provoking Caring Hearts event in September, the European Union of Women Marina Alta (EUWMA) is hosting another insightful meeting. This time, it's an evening gathering with tapas on 25 October at 6pm at the Restaurant of the Golf Club Jávea.
The event, titled "Women and Ukraine: Personal Stories Behind the War," will feature presentations and videos from Ukrainian women who have experienced the effects of the war firsthand. EUWMA member Anna from Ukraine (now living in Jávea) will be joined by Lora (pictured) from Ukraine (living in Wales) and other Ukrainian women, representing the millions who are part of a modern-day diaspora.
Since the Russian invasion, over 12 million Ukrainians have fled their homes. More than 5 million are in countries outside Ukraine, while 7 million are displaced within the country. Over 200,000 have found refuge in Spain. The majority of these refugees - 90% - are women and children, making this a gendered crisis, according to the UN. EUWMA aims to shed light on these personal stories to deepen our understanding of the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
EUWMA, an association for women in the Marina Alta, is part of a larger, Spain-wide organization with members across Europe. Event Details: Date & Time: 25 October, 6pm.
Location: Restaurant of the Golf Club Jávea.
Cost: 20€ for members, 22.50€ for non-members (includes tapas and a glass of wine).
RSVP: Send an email to euwma.treasurer@gmail.com to register. Payments can be made to IBAN ES76 2100 4575 5902 0015 0653 with your name and “TAPAS” in the concept. Deadline for reservations: 22 October (cancellations after this date cannot be refunded).
All are welcome (yes, men too!). For more information or to become a member, contact us via WhatsApp at 658 530 138 or email euwmarinaalta@gmail.com.

Leo: Great time for travel, even if it is just at the planning stage. A strong bond between the third and ninth houses, though they are in opposition, guarantees that this is going to be a trip to remember. Enjoy!
Virgo: The fourth house is prevalent in the forthcoming Solar Eclipse. For you it’s all about money and financial commitments. Check small print and only sign any documents if you are sure that the contract is secure.
OUR OROSCOPE
Libra: Mars is in a hard angle and in opposition to the New Moon Solar Eclipse. Something isn’t right, and whilst you can’t put your finger on it, you can be aware that in recent changes someone isn’t fully committed.
Scorpio: Mercury is conjunct with tenth house actions that mean that you need time for yourself right now. A retreat or a few days away, or a spa day will help you to focus on the inner you. Time to chill and get to know who you are!
Sagittarius: The Full Moon is in Aries, opposing Libra this month. You may find it hard to get your head around recent developments; however everything is for a reason right now and you will find out why and just move on!
Capricorn: The Sun in Scorpio sheds an illuminating light on matters of the heart this month. Your emotional wellbeing is of the greatest importance but whatever you do, do not close your heart down and love yourself.
Aquarius: Venus is in Scorpio until November in the first house of self. Though you yourself have set boundaries, pastures green await your recent regrettable decision. Be strong and carry on regardless.
Pisces: A conjunct with Mercury starts the ball rolling on something that you are keeping close to your chest. You’ll get your green light, but be patient in the meantime. The Solar Eclipse shines a light on all good things to come.

U3A Calpe kicked off their Autumn season with a special thank you evening for Group Leaders and their assistants. The new group leader Clive Dean took the opportunity to meet the leaders and find out more about their activities The chosen venue was the Tennis Club Calpe and delicious tapas and much Cava and Wine was consumed. Including some of the Committee the evening was enjoyed by 30 people. Some people had a surprise when their starred name labels meant they had to change tables to meet others, which went very well! Thanks to Sylvia and her team for setting the room out beautifully.
