IT'S BIG, REALLY BIG. OUR HOME GALAXY

A

QFocus Magazine October 2020

sk a hundred people what the Milky Way is and I'll bet over half will say it's very tasty. Of the rest some will know it as a band of stars across the sky, seen in all its beauty on very dark, clear nights. Only a few will know that you're looking at a small part of a vast whirlpool of stars that make up our galaxy.

So, I'll try and give you a bit of perspective on what our galaxy is. Floating in the vastness of space is a huge whirlpool of stars, probably about 300 billion of them, our Sun is just one of those. This whirlpool is so big it takes light about 180,000 years to get from one side to the other. Impressive isn't it? Along with all the stars is a lot of dust which hides parts of the galaxy from us, that's why last month when I said that if you looked at Saturn, you were looking towards the centre of our picture courtesy of E.S.A galaxy, but would never be able to see it. What is the centre of our galaxy like? Until a few years ago we would have looked at another galaxy like Andromeda and presumed ours looked same. Unfortunately the comparison doesn't work, Andromeda is around 2,500 million light years away, so what we are looking at is what it was like 2,500 million years ago, and a lot has changed in that time. I'll make this simple, there are other ways to see things other than visible light and instruments have been made to do just that. What they found is that the centre of our galaxy has blown up. Sorry pardon, did he just say that the centre our home galaxy has blown up? Yes, that's correct and it didn't happen all that long ago, about 3.5 million years ago, that's not long when you think that the dinosaurs were around 65 million years ago. What we think happened was that many black holes came together in the tightly packed centre and formed a super massive black hole, kerboom is the result. That is a horrible simplification, an explanation I've given to avoid a lot of technical stuff and help you form a picture in your mind. Since this discovery, other galaxies have been observed with similar phenomena, so we know it's not just us. Just in case you're wondering if all that presents any danger to us, the answer is no. Firstly 3.5 million years ago means any possible danger is long gone, and secondly, most of the energy was sent out from the poles of the galaxy in two titanic energy beams called Seyfert bursts. It must have looked spectacular. Galaxies were only discovered in the 1920s, when my dad was a young man, by a chap called Hubble, the man who the famous space telescope was named after. Given that it was less than a century ago, it's understandable that humankind still has an awful lot to discover about these massive structures. I'll finish with two things, firstly, our galaxy with its 300 billion stars, is just one of over 140 billion other galaxies, that's a lot of stars, and the figure will grow as we discover more. Lastly, would you like to look at a galaxy? You can see Andromeda in our night sky with binoculars, not as it looks in pictures but as a distinct but hazy blob. In October it will be between north-east and east, around 35 degrees up. Look for the Milky Way and go a bit to the right. Happy observing.

October brings the 27th anniversary of Female Focus Publications and wow has the company developed and grown over the years. What started off as one monthly magazine now boasts four publications and still has the continued support of clients month after month, year after year, some have in fact been advertising with us for over 20 years!!!! I myself have been with Female Focus for over 16 years and have loved every minute of it... It really is another family to me, which I would be lost without.

Thank you to all our loyal readers and clients, without you it wouldn´t have been possible, especially through these strange times of late.

Her dance lessons have also restarted so my car has once again become a taxi. Don't forget to put your clocks back on the 25th of October, even though I know most people would prefer to be putting them forward by a year and say goodbye to 2020!!! Congratulations to Mrs Jean Jackson from Rojales who won last month's competition after spotting the Curry On Cooking logo on page 19. For your chance to win a selection of Curry Kits this month, see inside for full details. Congratulations to Anne Catterall from Benigembla, winner of last month's Pure Organic CBD competition. Never jump into project expenses without being sure a licence will be issued

Here are 5 common reasons for the Council to reject a licence which, if the work is already done, can only be resolved using a simple Certificate of Antiquity/ Retrospective Licence. 1: Building work on plots that have already used there maximum build area. All plots have a maximum area which you are allowed to build on. This is known as maximum built area allowed. If the property has already reached the maximum size allowed, no major licence will be issued. 2: Plot under the minimum required size. No building work is allowed if the plot is under the minimum square metres required to build in the area. Some plots, although being legal, are under the minimum required size for building. This being the case no licence will be issued. Any existing shed, exterior built cupboard, semi-opened kitchen and other covered buildings or works such as a carport or pools will need a retrospective licence in order to become unobjectable in the future.

4: Closing in small existing gaps in the property: patios, existing terraces, porches. Most glass or bricked enclosed terraces and porches will not be allowed to be glazed in or transformed into interior spaces. Spanish properties traditionally tend to have patios and courtyards, along with semi-opened spaces like porches and partially covered terraces to provide shelter from the sun and to maximise the outdoor lifestyle. These semi-opened spaces are easily closed-in, but the bureaucracy is not as easy. These works, however small you might consider them, are adding to the registered square metres of the property and often permissions are declined. A Certificate of Antiquity is the only document that can make these existing works accepted by the planning department at the Town Hall. 5: Underbuilds are not allowed to be used for living accommodation: Underbuilds with living accommodations are never done with the correct licences and again a Certificate of Antiquity/Retrospective Licence is the only document that can prevent prosecution for any interior alterations done at the property or alterations that don’t meet the planning standards.

&

3: Extensions violating the minimum required distance to the plot’s boundaries. Permanent carports, or any kind of roofed buildings that are violating the minimum required distance to the plot’s boundaries is a reason to decline a license. National planning laws for detached properties require a minimum distance between a window and a neighbour’s boundary of 2 metres. Regional and local laws may allow between 3 to even 5 metres or more. There are many

variables depending on different factors. A Certificate of Antiquity is the only document that can avoid previous works being objected to by the planning department at the Town Hall.

www.femalefocusonline.com

Page 9

....continued from previous page Martinez de la Casa Architects always recommend their clients enquire at the Town Hall if the licence will be possible before jumping into expenses for doing projects, employing architects, etc). In case the building work has already been completed (applicable for all cases above) the document needed is a Certificate of Antiquity, also known as a Retrospective Licence. Once issued, this document acts as a licence, protecting the owner against possible sanctions from the Town Hall. It is highly recommended to avoid putting off potential buyers due to the existence of illegal extensions to the property. It will also be needed on completion of the sale in order to update the property’s description in Title Deeds & Land Registry. Only properly qualified and registered Spanish Architects are permitted to issue Retrospective Licences, so if your solicitors are studying your case, ask them to contact Martinez de la Casa Architects to provide the Antiquity Certificate and they will make the whole process easier, faster and cheaper with their fixed published prices and guaranteed deadlines. The cost of an Antiquity Certificate/Retrospective Licence for pools is 190€ +IVA and extensions or complete properties only 270€ +IVA. Discounts are available if you also require an Energy Performance Certificate (121€ IVA incl.), Habitation Licence (from 118€ IVA incl., but Registration Tax not included) or any other of their services, done at the same time. If you want to have your Retrospective Licence/ Antiquity Certificate for your extension or pool now, in accordance with present laws and to protect against possible future changes in the laws that may affect you, Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment and guarantee the delivery of the Certificate of Antiquity within 10 working days after survey. Kajar and Gobi Achar Carrot and Cauliflower Pickle Ingredients

1 tsp mustard seeds 3 carrots cut into thin matchsticks 1 tsp nigella seeds 1 cauliflower cut into small florets ½ tsp black pepper 4 tablespoon rapeseed/veg oil 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp cumin seeds Salt to taste The above spices can be replaced by a Curry On Cooking Bombay Potato kit. Time: Prep; 15 Minutes. Cook: 8-10 Minutes Indian achar or pickles are a must at mealtimes, a perfect companion to curries, lentils, rice and flatbreads. A medley of spices lift the mundane vegetables to a taste sensation, guaranteed to transform any dull meal! This achar is a great accompaniment to cheese and in particular cheese on toast! The pickle can be eaten immediately or can be left at room temperature for a couple of days to mature in flavour before eating. Recipe Heat the oil in a wok or frying pan, over medium-high heat until hot. Add cumin seeds, turn the heat down to medium, after 10 seconds add the mustard and nigella seeds along with the turmeric, stir as the spices begin to change colour and pop, for about 30 seconds. Add the carrots and cauliflower, salt and pepper, mix well and continue stirring until the veg is tender, this should take around 6 to 10 minutes – check the seasoning. Once cooked – let the achar cool completely before decanting into a sterilised jar. Once opened, store the jar in a fridge. It will keep for two weeks, but it never lasts that long our house! Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

US Supreme Court Justice, born March 15, 1933 in Washington District of Columbia, died September 18, 2020 aged 87 years. Ruth Ginsberg was a much quoted life long campaigner for Freedom and Justice and a tireless advocate for women's rights. The US has in recent times lost the wisdom of Maya Angalou and now has lost the creative vocabulary of Justice Ginsberg. I thought it would be useful to remind you of some of her notable quotes. When asked about her motivation she said "I just try to do the good job that I have, to the best of my ability and I really don't think about whether I'm inspirational. I just do the best I can". She also noted that "Reading is the key that opens doors to many good things in life. Reading shaped my dreams and more reading helped me make my dreams come true". On the USA she stated "I am optimistic in the long run. A great man once said the true symbol of the US is not the Bald Eagle, it's the pendulum, and when the pendulum swings too far in one direction it will go back". On the place of women in society she stated: "Women will have achieved true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation". Famously she also said "I ask in favour for my Sex. All I ask of our brethren is that they take their feet off our necks". May she rest in peace.

Can some of our pain be self caused? Don’t blame others for what we allow ourselves to feel.

We are what we think, is an interesting statement. Even at death's door I have known people to have had an amazing attitude towards things, which backs up someone famous who kept saying “Attitude is everything” That is Dorset Campbell Ross’s way of thinking, and he is so right! Life is a learning curve, and the choices we make are all down to us as to how we deal with things mentally, and it all starts there! We choose in a big way how we see things and how we deal with things, so it should be no surprise to accept that we are likely to be involved in the results we get on a daily basis. So many don’t want to accept that explanation, but then why do we keep getting the results we don’t like when we are the only ones in control of everything mental! Make your mind up not to allow things you are not in control of to upset you. That includes people, and situations, and all the results you get from changing your way of handling things will impress you. Our way of thinking decides what we feel like and yes, in many ways we are able to feel differently if we think differently. Try it by not allowing people to offend you. You cannot control how others behave, so why not just accept their choices and move on. So many of us live in the past and ruin every day......a lovely quote I think of all the time is... “Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery, Today is a gift called the Present, so make the best of it”. With all the terrible things that are going on at the moment worldwide, we can have a lot to look forward to if we focus on the truth in our lives and appreciate all we have today. Until next time!

How to bring the calming principles of feng shui into your home By Prudence Wade, PA It’s all about encouraging positive energy flow. Regardless of whether you’re back to school or not, this is a good time of year to stop, take stock and make some positive changes. For Gen Z in particular, there’s been an increased focus on making bedrooms a calm and soothing space. Pinterest has found the age group (born between the mid-Nineties and early 2010s) is looking for serenity, with searches for ‘Zen bedroom ideas’ up five times on average, and ‘feng shui bedroom layout’ up two and a half times. Thinking about how to bring this feeling of calmness into your home as a whole? The Chinese practice of feng shui could help. “Translated as ‘wind-water’ in English, feng shui practises the belief that by bringing positive energy into the home, good health, wealth and luck are set to follow,” explains Rebecca Snowden, interior style advisor at FurnitureChoice.co.uk. Here are Snowden’s top tips for welcoming positive energy into your home… Declutter Many of us see September as a second new year, meaning it’s the ideal time to declutter. “A neat home works wonders for our mental clarity and overall health,” explains Snowden. “In feng shui, each space is connected to each other and allows positive energy to flow throughout the house. Add a decorative mirror to the living room to make the space feel larger, and multiply the positive energy flow. Meanwhile, closets or drawers overloaded with old items block the chi (energy) so it’s best to discard any clutter.” Balance yin and yang Snowden recommends incorporating yin (feminine) and yang (masculine) elements into your decor. “Apply this concept by mixing different shapes together,” she says. “For example, contrast the sharp edges of wall hangings with the soft curves of a sofa or mirror in the living room. This will balance out the room and give it a more relaxing feel.” Bring calm into your bedroom It’s no surprise Gen Z are keen to feng shui their bedrooms: after all, getting a good night’s sleep is crucial to overall wellbeing, and the right environment can play a big part. To boost feelings of calm and relaxation particularly in your bedroom, Snowden has two top tips: first, get rid of mirrors to help avoid an energy overload. And second, make the bed the central focus. “In feng shui, this symbolises a commanding position that allows you to take charge and handle life’s many challenges,” says Snowden. “The bed is best positioned diagonally away from your door as you will still be able to see it clearly, while not being in a direct line to it. Placing your bed against the wall will also give you a sense of security and ground you when you sleep. And for extra strength and stability, a bed with a headboard will represent this, with its solid support and build.” If you have a home office, apply the same logic to your desk to bring the focus onto productivity. Freshen up the place with plants Snowden says plants can “bring positive energy” into a room, adding: “In feng shui, they are commonly associated as a life force and bring in growth, prosperity and luck. Common indoor plants said to attract these good elements include pothos, lucky bamboo and peace lily.”

Book Review by Ivor Kindle Title: The Fear Index Author: Robert Harris Publisher: Arrow I picked up this book firstly due to the author, who I always enjoy, and secondly due to the fact that the underlying driver of the storyline is a much mentioned "algorithm". The story contemplates that a machine led intelligence can, and in fact does, control the everyday matters of a large Hedge Fund. The machine interjects in a different way than a human being would when attempting to make money... human fear is discounted as being irrational and the only function that matters is the making of money - principles, and what is proper is not taken into consideration. The only goal is money. The market is explained and some useful money market terms are mentioned. The story line follows a mathematical genius as he becomes involved, and ultimately almost part of the machine code of the artificial intelligence that he has created. A good read with a good theme and an interesting subject matter. Easy late summer reading.

Keep reading, Ivor Kindle.

CHANGE ONE THING Flushing items like wet wipes down the toilet is causing pollution in our oceans and on our beaches, not to mention sewer blockages. There are now many eco alternatives or you could use a damp cloth. These are easily laundered in the washing machine and can be popped into a (resuable) plastic box when out. Make the change today.

our ARIES Anyone who gets in your way this month will regret it. Any obstacle will be overcome and not always with as much diplomacy as maybe should have been used. Your attention to detail is heightened, just try not to be too picky with every little thing. TAURUS You can rest a little as a romantic problem is resolved. It had been weighing on your mind for too long. You are told something you wish you did not know as now you have to deal with it. Think it through carefully before making any decisions. GEMINI An announcement you make will not go the way you had hoped. They just need time to come around, but time is something you don't have at the moment. Move on without them and they will catch up. CANCER You do not have patience for those who do not deserve it at the moment. Your energy is taken up by spending quality time with those who need it, including repairing a relationship which has been neglected. LEO You have learned a lot over the last few months and now it is time to put things into practice. See how much easier it makes it for you going forward in both your personal and professional life. VIRGO Go with the flow and you will find the month passing without incident. Alternatively digging your heals in over something that really is not all that important will only cause friction between the very people who you should be supporting right now. You know what you should do.

oroscope LIBRA Be constructive in your criticism and people will work with you to sort out the issues rather than blocking your every turn. Owning up to your mistakes will go far, but defend yourself if you think the blame has been misplaced. SCORPIO Although things are becoming much clearer, it is annoying that you could not see this months ago as it would have saved a lot of heartache. It does mean that you can move forward now without hesitation, knowing you are going in the right direction. SAGITTARIUS Past experiences were not for nothing and you can now prove what you have learned from them. Be careful that you have all the facts before accusing someone. CAPRICORN Never mind the bigger picture, now is the time to pay particular attention to the details. Make sure you check and double check before agreeing to anything of importance, or you could be left regretting your decisions. AQUARIUS People are waiting for you to react to the rumours. There are two ways to deal with this, ignore it or face it head on. Whichever you decide the ones who are important will stand by you. Finding out the whole truth will hurt, but better that than ignorance. PISCES Although your competitive streak is at its peak that does not mean to say that it is at the expense of others. Working as a team has always meant reaching the finish in better form and better time. Avoid drama and confrontations and this will be a productive month.

Note from Benny: After 12 years of publication, the Diary is still going strong. Despite several months of lockdown, most of our stalwart entertainers are now dusting themselves down and 'Once more, stepping unto the breach'. Unfortunately, a few groups have gone to the wall, whilst others are taking a breather and will be re-launching their talents either later this year, or during the early part of 2021. So please support your local group when and where you get the opportunity. Don´t forget, all groups in this column are non-profit making and donate all proceeds to local charities. Actors Community Theatre Society: 2020 has been a strange year! They were unable to reschedule performances of `Ladies Day´, which was cancelled only days away from the opening night, actors, sets, props all ready, so disappointing! But onwards and upwards, so they are now busy looking for smaller projects that they can hold whilst observing social distancing requirements. Hopefully, they will be back soon with exciting news.

Cantabile Ladies Choir: At present time, the Choir do not know when rehearsals will commence. Further details next month, when hopefully arrangements can be made. New members in all parts are always welcome, especially sopranos, the only requirement is the ability to sing in tune in this friendly, three-part female choir. Contact: valbeange@gmail.com or valcantabile@gmail.com Phone: 966 795 816. Mobile: 648 034 232. Rehearsals usually take place in La Siesta Church, Torrevieja, Fridays 14:45 - 17:00 from September to May.

Harmoniser’s Barbershop: Whatever your singing talent, a warm welcome awaits you at the Harmoniser's. They are a friendly club including all nationalities, singing in the Barbershop style. Owing to the Covid 19 rules (at time of compiling this information) they are not allowed to sing for 21 days. Watch this column for information as to when they will be allowed to get back to normal singing again at Casa Contenta Rojales. Lyrical Mixed Voice Choir: Rehearsals will resume on Wednesday mornings in La Zenia church this month, (exact date to be confirmed), New singers are always welcome. Rojales Pantomime Group: After losing rehearsal venues and production theatre, the Group have no alternative but to cancel their next pantomime. Not to be beaten – oh no they will not the Group that plays together will stay together through monthly social events. They were tasked to make and wear a hat at their recent dinner, aptly won by Sue their talented wardrobe mistress for her pink and white striped creation. Roll on the next event. In the meantime, if you would like to join this happy group, please email: rojalespantomime@gmail.com. Studio 32: The Company are pleased to announce they will be performing the musical, `South Pacific´ at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre, San Fulgencio from Wednesday 17 to Saturday 20 March 2021, all going well with the COVID-19 restrictions. JAGUAR BIG CATS BACK ON THE PROWL

QF Magae Oe 2020

Page 23

Written by Sandra Brook It is with great pleasure to be able to say that JEC-CostaBlanca put on a display of Jaguars at a show on the 30th August at Pilar de la Horadada. On September 16th a group of members ran together from Albir in the north of Alicante to join members from the south at a meeting point in Torrellano. Once refreshed and regrouped, they proceeded on a run with 15 highly polished big cats growling with pleasure as they left their meeting point. They purred along contentedly while proudly displaying their magnificence as they ran in convoy heading for Agost. Agost is a village famous for pottery making which is situated in the mountains of Alicante, unfortunetly due to restrictions this years' run did not include a visit to a potters. It was a good day with a good run which was enjoyable in the lovely sunshine and even after a little hiccup when some frisky cats missed the restaurant and carried on around the roundabout, Mr President Mike soon had them slinking their way back to join the group of cats that were lined up outside the restaurant Don Camilo. We went on to enjoy our meal while warmly welcoming 4 new members and their partners to the Costa Blanca region of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club.

If you own a Jaguar and would like to join JEC contact Mike Brook mikebikejec@gmail.com

Yet again the quizzers at Sunleys Bar in Formentera have come up trumps, raising another 200€ for charity. This time, the money went to Reach Out in Torrevieja.

Most of you already know the extraordinary work this charity does, feeding and clothing the poor and homeless of Torrevieja. Their work became even harder during lockdown as their shops were closed and their funds became seriously depleted. Things are improving for them however, but they are still needing as much help as the public can give them. They have two shops – one in Calle Bella Antonia 1, Torrevieja, and the other in Calle Dona Sinforosa 8, Torrevieja. There are loads and loads of bargains to be had, so do visit and maybe you will find something. Also, if you have unwanted possessions, they will be gratefully received. You can also help by dropping off non-perishable things. They do receive some help from the food bank, but nothing for babies under 1 year, so baby food, dried baby milk would be helpful. They also need things like soap, shampoo and other personal hygiene products. At Sunleys, we will continue to collect these things, so if you don’t want to go to the shops, you can always drop off any non-perishables or hygiene products and we will make sure they get them.

Hi All. Well, I don't think I have to remind any of you that this has been a very strange year. That's for sure. Particularly, in the entertainment industry here in Spain. Sad to see that several venues have closed their doors, and six of our well established artistes on the circuit here, have returned to the UK. But we have to look forward, and on a brighter note - I'm delighted this month to feature piano / keyboard / vocalist, David Peterson. Dave has been a professional musician for 50 years, and is regarded Dave playing the famous Wurlitzer as one of the top piano entertainers in Europe. organ at Blackpool Tower He has lived in Spain for the past 30 years, but has worked far and wide in many countries. In his first 30 years as a Musical Director, David Peterson worked with many great stars, and was closely associated (as M.D.) with famous British percussionist Eric Delaney, from 1982 until 2000.

He sings in both English and Spanish, specialising in entertaining international audiences, in 5 star venues. Although specialising on his own sophisticated blend of Swing, Jazz and Soft Rock, Dave can handle any musical situation as required, from gentle cocktail piano - through to Latin American, Country, Ballads, and even Pop Disco Dance music. With half a century of professional experience behind him, he tailors his performance to the particular requirements of the venue, as required. In 2012, Dave played a season in the prestigious 360 degree Restaurant at the top of the "Torch" Hotel, Doha Qatar. And during his time there, appeared in front of the Qatar Royal Family, and also HRH Prince Albert of Monaco. In the years that followed, Dave played for P&0 cruises on Iguana, Ardadia and Aurora, plus a brief spell on the Fred Olsen "Black Watch". More recently he has entertained on the River Danube, for Scenic Luxury River Cruises and Tours, performing for a mix of Australian, Canadian, American and British passengers.
