How big is space? Douglas Adams once wrote, “space is big, really big. If you think it's a long way to the shops, that's nothing.

He then carried on and wrote one of the most popular comedy sci fi books ever written. The point I'm starting to get at is that space isn't just big, it's so vast that it's almost impossible for the human mind to comprehend. We use easy to grasp ideas like our solar system - there are 8 major planets circling our Sun. That area encompasses an area truly vast on a human scale, it takes many years for a spaceship travelling at huge speed to get from Earth to Pluto, the one-time outer planet. Unfortunately for our imaginations, that distance is nothing, the Sun is just one of over 350 BILLION that form a big spinny group of stars that make up our home galaxy, the Milky Way. This is the next problem for us humans, 350 billion of anything is too big a number to visualise, that many huge things like stars is even worse. If I tell you that the fastest thing we know of, light takes 100,000 years to get across, would that help? Now I'm going to make things even more difficult, you see, our galaxy isn't alone, it's part of what's called the local group, a collection of 40 Galaxies. 40 more galaxies, all with billions of stars, covering distances that beggar the imagination. Did I warn you that this wasn't easy? Well now it gets much harder. I'll stop rambling and come to the point. The current best estimate of the number of galaxies in the known universe is......... 200,000,000,000 And you can bet that this number will go up as mankind learns more. If you should feel the urge to multiply some of those numbers together, be my guest, you'll begin to see part of what our universe has become over the last 13.5 billion years. You might have noticed that I said our universe, I chose my words carefully there. It's been only 90 years since the first galaxy was discovered to be made up of lots of stars, by a man called Edwin Hubble, whom the space telescope is named after. Only 90 years to learn all that we have, and to begin to realise that there are a lot of unanswered questions. What will be known in another 100 years? One idea that used to belong in fanciful science fiction stories was what is sometimes called the multiverse, lots of other universes, maybe with different laws of physics and in other dimensions. Would you believe that some very respectable cosmologists are investigating that idea? Anyway, for now that isn't fact, just an idea, but I mention it to get across the idea that for all we have discovered, there is an awful lot more to come. Well, that should give you plenty to think about, but if, like most of the Vega Baja Astronomy Group you prefer a more practical approach, come to one of our meetings. We have begun our telescope tuitions and are helping beginners settle into this wonderful hobby. Email me at vegabaja.astronomygroup@gmail.com. Group Vega Baja Astronomy

We've recently acquired some new additions to our family in the form of a couple of furry puppies Hugo and Boss. After seeing their adorable faces on a charity rescue site me and my angel set off to visit them with the intention of rehoming one of them. After meeting them both it was an impossible decision to choose between them and being brothers we felt it was wrong to split them up so both of them ended up coming home with us. A lot of friends and family told us it would probably be easier to have two as they would keep each other company and entertained. Well they are certainly keeping us all constantly entertained with their daily antics! My angel was involved in a pantomime during January with the dance school she attends which in turn made me taxi driver dropping and picking up for the many rehearsals and shows. It went really well and the costumes were great but it is nice to have a rest from it all now, especially with the cold dark nights upon us. Congratulations to Susan Astbury from Quesada who won last month's 50â‚Ź competition after spotting the logo on page 17. See if you can spot the logo in this issue for a chance to win 50â‚Ź, see inside for details of how to enter. Good luck!

14 players + a referee turned up for the session on 10 January of the Gran Alacant Oldies Walking Football. It is so gratifying to see the numbers we are achieving during this winter. On this date last year we were having attendances of around 8 players. Sitting in the elevated stand area at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre, it was very noticeable the improved standard of the players over recent sessions. Yet another newbee attended and yet again, the comments were, “I did not expect it to be like this. saying how quick our players are at these weekly sessions. The expansion of our club, continued the next day, with an away fixture at Rojales playing against a team from Quesada. This was our fourth away game at an opponents ground. The picture shows our players at the Quesada fixture, which was a bit of a mismatch. Some of our players were very much older than the opposition and we had no substitutes, whereas the home side could bring on substitutes as needed with fresher legs during the game. We will learn from this. As we go to print another big step forward for the club is to be taken, when they play their first home competitive fixture against Hondon at their new home venue in Santa Pola. This venue will only be used for home competitive fixtures. All Thursday sessions will remain at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre. We thank our 6 shirt sponsors: GA Properties, GA Homefinder, GA Advertiser, Hispania, La Paletta and B. Smith builder.

Avoiding Inheritance Tax in Spain between spouses and their children Most of us British ex-pats will fall under the UK inheritance law thresholds and will not have to pay inheritance tax. In the UK there is no inheritance tax between spouses which is why Ken Dodd married his very long term partner two days before he died. If you are a Spanish resident then there are inheritance taxes between spouses. Granted, you get a €100,000 allowance so, simply (and I mean simply because in reality it gets very complicated), if you have joint assets sited in Spain worth over €200,000 then there will be inheritance tax to pay by the surviving spouse of a married couple. Not only does the tax need to be paid by the surviving spouse but there will be the huge inconvenience of half of the joint assets being frozen until the tax is assessed and paid. The inheritance tax rates for a spouse in the Valencian region run from 7.65% to 34% depending on the amount over €100,000 being inherited. So what can you do? Contact me at Blacktower and depending on your financial situation I would be likely to recommend: • An investment bond written as a life assured bond between both spouses. When either spouse dies first the bond continues as if nothing has happened, nothing gets frozen and there are no liabilities to the Tax department. • Once you have both died, and your beneficiaries are resident in the UK and you have a UK law of succession clause in your Spanish Will, then they will inherit the bond inheritance tax free also. This can be structured to either payout upon both deaths or continue making money for your children. The bonds have lots of other benefits too, and some offer a fixed rate of return in both Sterling (Average 3.45%) and Euros (Average 2.65%). All money is held outside

of Spain even though they are Spanish compliant and internally the bonds do all the tax reporting for you so you have no tax headaches! These, (and /or other products) can only be offered by regulated advisers such as us, because we have to assess which is the right product for you and your family circumstances. For this reason they cannot be bought off the shelf directly from product providers and the minimum bond size is £20,000 or €25,000.

Understanding the differences between building licences in Spain

In the UK, licences are pretty straightforward and easy, allowing the building of minor extensions or other buildings with a simple and basic process. However, that doesn’t happen in Spain and all building work needs one of the following three types of licences. Major Building Work Licence Required whenever there is: ·Extensions either attached or detached, such as garages, work sheds, etc. ·Any building work that implies building a roof with over 1.5mts height. ·Any structural building work inside or outside the property, such as putting new beams, structural repairs, knocking down loadbearing walls. ·Any internal change of layouts, such as making rooms, kitchens or toilets bigger or smaller, subdividing rooms etc. ·Pools - Even small or fibreglass ones. Major building work licences always need to be signed off by a qualified architect and the paperwork required is usually vast. The process can be long and bumpy. Town Halls take months to issue the licence and they also require that the builder is qualified and registered.

(prior to building). By having a Retrospective Licence/Antiquity Certificate, building work already done becomes unobjectionable for the authorities. ·Vendors use it to avoid putting off potential buyers, due to the existence of undeclared or unlicensed building work. ·The Antiquity Certificate is also the document needed at the Notary to update the Title Deeds (Escritura) with any alterations introduced to the property. The requirements to obtain a Retrospective Licence for any extension or pools are as follows: ·Alicante: The extension or pool needs to be over four years old, before 20th August of 2014 (minimum aprox 9 years). ·Murcia: The extension or pool needs to be over four years old. ·Almeria: The extension or pool needs to be over six years old.

Minor Building Work Licences Minor building work licences are those needed to do any building work that doesn’t imply structure, doesn’t increase the build size of the property or doesn’t involve a roof, for example, tiling, repairing, cladding, plumbing, electricity etc. They are generally easy and cheap to obtain.

Martinez de la Casa Architects is one of the most prominent and respectable practices in the area, providing all types of certificates and licences, amongst other services. We are the Number 1 company in EPC Certificates (121€ inc IVA) and Number 1 for Antiquity Certificates (pools 229€ inc IVA, extensions 326€ inc IVA) and Habitation Licences (from 118€ inc IVA, Town Hall tax not included, depending on each municipality).

Retrospective Licence/Certificate of Antiquity This is required whenever the property has been extended, altered or had a pool built without a proper building licence

QF Focus Magazine My name is Steve Woods and I am a solicitor specialising in claims for asbestos related diseases and I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask! I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED, OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. I always like to meet my clients and it is surprising how often, when you start talking about a person's work history, what they remember. Often, it turns out that even if a person did not actually work with asbestos, they worked alongside people who did and therefore came into contact with dust. Another possibility, and a particularly sad one in my experience, is a wife who comes into contact with asbestos from her husband’s work clothes. A RELATIVE HAS DIED FROM AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION BEFORE MAKING A CLAIM. It is not widely known that claims can be made even though the person affected has died (provided the claim is made within 3 years of death). The claim is made on behalf of the person's estate. DIAGNOSING AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION. There are a number of conditions that can be caused by exposure to asbestos, including lung cancer. The main issue is whether the breathing difficulties can be attributed to asbestos. This is the point we have to prove in all respiratory disease cases, not just asbestos related but also, for example, silicosis – medical evidence is required to prove a link. Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. So, if you are concerned about your particular situation or have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am happy to talk to you free of charge.

A View From The Top

Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. Whale Meat again.

My Not so Fox Faced Friend.

Continuing with the animal theme, some months ago I wrote a QF piece which explained how we have taken on a rescue dog ...you may remember him ...he is called Fonzie. Fonzie we thought, was a Fox Terrier cross ...long bearded snout with very long kangarooish legs. Oh how wrong were we ...it now turns out that Fonzie, rather the being a Fox Terrier is in fact an Irish Terrier...and those long legs are part of his Irish Terrier make up. He (Fonzie) is coming up to his first birthday ...in February he will reach his first year on God’s earth. As I write this piece, he is curled up on his bed next to Santos (our Border Collie) ...he, Fonzie, has been out with Er Indoors to the dog running area near the Aldi/Consum roundabout. Fonzie just loves to run and then he loves to continued

Reading the newspaper online when I came across the story that pronounced "The Japanese have announced that they would be leaving the International Whaling Commission". This story saddened me but it did not surprise me. Since 1986 the killing of whales for commercial gain on the high seas has been banned under the auspices of the IWC ...however during this time Japan has still killed whales under the guise of research. In fact, during the year 2016 Japan killed 4,000 - 5,000 tons in weight ...approximately 300 plus animals of which more than 200 were pregnant females. Whales are mammals ...mammals are warm blooded animals that breath air, have hair

QF Focus Magazine and female whales feed their offspring milk via mammary glands. These characteristics classify whales as mammals rather than as fish. The killing of these magnificent creatures is shocking ...when will human beings stop denuding the planet of its heritage. The Japanese as a nation do not eat whale meat as a staple part of their diet. In fact, the 2016 tonnage caught when divided across the Japanese population is equal to about 1 ounce per person per year. It would seem then that economics are not part of the Japanese rational for re starting commercial whaling, rather it is a political act - a bit of Japanese sabre rattling to brace the Japanese psyche against Chinese dominance of the seas surrounding Japan and its territories. Whales are both sapient and sentient beings. Sapience being an ability to act with appropriate judgement within complex social groups ...something you and I would call wisdom. Being a sentient animal means that whales may be aware of a range of sensations and emotions, of feeling pain and suffering and of experiencing a state of well being. I have written before about the barbaric treatment of dolphins at the hands of the Japanese ...now it appears that whales are back on the Japanese agenda ...for God’s sake reverse this barbaric decision to leave the International Whaling Commission and defend these beautiful marine creatures.

QF Focus Magazine run some more and then some more. At the doggie area he meets up with his girly doggie friends the "pointer sisters" and the "coccapoos" chaps... he rubs noses with all and sundry doggie friends and has a great time just tearing around. It is really amazing to see so many dogs of so many differing breeds...long, tall, short, and just plain small all getting along and enjoying the chance to run around and bark and play. The most heart warming thing to me is that many of the dogs playing and looking so happy are "rescue" dogs, some of whom have literally missed being put down by a matter of minutes. I applaud all the owners and their faithful friends...the saying it’s a dogs life can have a positive meaning. What is that journalistic saying "Hold the front page" well I am just in from nipping to the shops for some bread ...lunch was going to be boiled egg and soldiers ...I just love boiled egg and soldiers ...however today no soldiers for me due to the fact that Fonzie has somehow managed to knock the egg basket off the kitchen worktop and has eaten all two dozen eggs that in the said basket. The kitchen floor has a few bits of eggshell lying around and is covered in a shiny coating of egg white. After half an hour mopping the floor all is back to normal ...I have Googled just to make sure that no lasting harm will come from a dog eating raw eggs ...Google says in fact eggs are good for dogs as a food supplement ...I wonder what effect two dozen will have. The effect Dear Reader is quite simple ...Fonzie was up half the night using his doggie toilet (dug over and stoned area in our courtyard) and when he wasn’t going, he was farting ...Yes you are correct ...just the same as egg sandwiches. We now have a regime that keeps everything back against the kitchen wall out of doggie range ...Oh Fonzie we do love you so.

The Table of Wisdom.

I had the privilege to Chair the New Year resumption of "The table of Wisdom"...myself and a few learned friends get together over a few beers and sort out the woes of the World. Brexit is always prominent as a topic as is Tango Man (Donald Trump) ...issues with our assorted automobiles again are worth discussion, as is the fact that although we all have mobile devices none of us seem to be able to use them in the correct manner. Technology coupled with the ravages of age equals dimness to greater or in some cases lesser degree. Now, it was my pleasure to welcome an ex drinking friend back to the Table of Wisdom on a temporary basis as he is over here on an extended holiday ...Arthur was duly sworn in and has caused nothing but chaos and confusion ever since ...He thinks Flashman was a character in Blackadder ...he does not understand the role of "the memory man" in the film "The Thirty Nine Steps" and he believes the film "The Five Graves To Cairo" only had four graves. To top it off, apparently he has a school report that against the subject mark for Geography the tutor has inscribed "Does well to find his own way home!". The Table of Wisdom looks like it will have to call an emergency general meeting to resurrect our sullied image ...perhaps we could co-opt Arthur’s dog Jess onto the panel - being a Border Collie cross she is bound to be the brains of the family. Brexit is a doddle compared to Chairing the "Table of Wisdom".

How to start the day off for the best results Do you ever wonder how we can improve our lives by starting the day off differently? As you wake up, why not be grateful that you have done that? So many people haven’t! Start off by appreciating what you have to be grateful for ....food, drink, a bed, a roof over your head and the ability to handle things differently every day. We all have different life styles, but we are, as adults, all where we are today because of the choices we have made in life. Think about that! We all decide how to do things, but don’t forget there are prices to pay for what we choose to do, and so many of us perhaps don’t realise that. Think about it. How many of us allow things, situations and people into our lives that we are not at all comfortable with? If relationships aren’t good .... why? Can we alter the way we handle things? Can we talk to each other about the situations and continue to try to make improvements? Some things will come to an end, some things we are not forced to put up with, so we can make changes if we focus on the real issues, instead of kicking things to the kerb and then wondering why they don’t improve. Every day is a challenge and every day can be bliss if we handle things in a way that will bring different results. If you make a cake we don’t like, we can make it again, but change the ingredients! It works, so can making the right changes in life and not giving up on our ability to take control ....which some people don’t believe we have! If we are living as adults we can be responsible for all the good in our lives ......also the not so good. It doesn’t have to be tolerated unless you can change your attitude towards things, and attitude is everything in every situation. Give it a try! ...you could be grateful that you did! Until the next time!

One year after moving into their new premises in La Zenia and at the same time opening the new office in Benijรณfar, Worldwide Horizons is going from strength to strength in both destinations. Whilst they continue to offer the products of other Costa Blanca companies, such as day-tours, short stays around Spain and cruises with transport, their real love is in planning long-haul and more exotic destinations, whether it is a stay in a country or visiting lots of countries whilst on a cruise.

Always keen to keep on top of new trends and upcoming destinations, the team frequently attend travel fairs in Spain and in the UK, making connections with operators who can provide the best in accommodation, destinations and excursions in locations. And wherever possible, they also enjoy trying out the facilities in order to give better recommendations to their customers. Hotels in Roquetas, ski-ing in Granada, a new 5* resort in Tenerife and a Canary Island Pullmantur cruise are all amongst the recently sampled, as well as frequent visits to Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Celebrity, Azamara, Royal Caribbean and MSC ships for a look-around the facilities. Photos of all of these can be found on their Facebook Page and on their own webpage www.whtravel.es. House Of Furniture open new Superstore in Los Montesinos There was a great turn out to the opening of the House of Furniture Superstore in Los Montesinos on 4 January, with many repeat and new customers arriving to show their support and view the fantastic ranges of quality furniture in store, with the friendly staff on hand to offer advice and answer any enquiries. House Of Furniture in Rojales was born on 2 May 2017, mainly offering a selection of quality second hand furniture for both indoor and outdoors. Within a couple of months they accrued further suppliers offering a selection of new sofas and beds providing their customers quality new and second-hand furniture for every pocket. The success of the first store enabled them to invest heavily in a second outlet (formally known as the Tony Firth Auction House in Los Montesinos) which is over 3 times the size of the original shop meaning they can offer a greater selection of furniture and also a large external area for displaying garden furniture. As word of the second store spread, they were contacted by a local business asking if they could display their products on the premises. Easigrass, an artificial grass company installed a large grassed area of patio to a very high standard before the opening and supplied sample stands and leaflets as well as attending the opening gaining many enquiries. House of Furniture are now agents for Easigrass and are more than happy to support their product. When we asked Peter and Jade how they have achieved so much in so little time the answer is 'easy' says Peter, 'We always try and exceed the customers’ expectations, offer quality at affordable prices and build relationships with all our customers'. Both branches are open Monday – Friday 9am – 5.30pm and Saturday from 9am – 2pm. See main advert in the classified section.

our ARIES Stop being stubborn over something that really is not worth it. This should be the month of love, not arguments. Focus on what is really important to you and your loved ones right now and get on with it instead of making excuses. TAURUS If you are thinking of making some changes in the home then plan things carefully. Your hard earned cash should not be wasted by not thinking things through properly in the first place. GEMINI Well you are in for an interesting month to say the least. Help will come from an unexpected place, but people who you thought were on your side might not be a loyal as you hoped. CANCER You are so easily distracted at the moment and it is not doing you any favours with others who really need you to stay on track. Making a plan or a list and sticking too it might be the only way you can do this. LEO Finding a balance of helping others without losing track of your needs is proving hard. You cannot keep giving all the time, sometimes you have to let others give to you, or even give yourself the attention you need. VIRGO Try not to be too outspoken however hard that is, everyone is entitled to their opinion however ridiculous it may seem to you. Your need for knowledge is heightened so put it to good use.

oroscope LIBRA It will surprise you how making one small change can bring you so much more pleasure. It gives you the drive you have been missing to make other changes. This even goes as far as your outlook towards things and people. A spring clean is on the horizon! SCORPIO Try to focus on your goals and achieving them and not on other people's or you will not get anywhere, whereas they will be leaving you standing. You know where you are headed so stick to it. Mid month you will be challenged and it will bring out your bad side if you let it. SAGITTARIUS A face to face conversation is what is needed to sort out a misunderstanding. Don't leave it to messages or the issue will really get blown out of proportion. Someone is trying to get out of a commitment - let them, they have their reasons and it's not worth falling out over. CAPRICORN You are achieving one goal after another with everything running smoothly and to plan. If you see someone struggling help them to achieve as well. AQUARIUS Keeping sowing the seeds and the benefits will continue pouring in. Life is for living so live it, enjoy new experiences and stop putting down so many limits. PISCES The month starts of more aggressively than you expected but don't second guess yourself, you know that you are right and by the end of the month so will everyone else.

Quesada Bowls Club Report

Sponsored by

by Dee Stephenson

Although winter has arrived the weather is being very kind to our bowlers this year. And as Christmas approached members enjoyed a combination of league, casual and club competition matches as well as some well deserved social time together in the lead up to Christmas.

Now an annual event, organised by Steve Fedtschyschak, 28 members took a break together for a couple of days in Benidorm to celebrate an early Christmas. They enjoyed lots of fun, laughter, food and of course some Christmas “spirits”. Meantime on 29 December the annual Christmas “mufti” attracted more than 30 members. Great bowling along with great fancy dress costumes meant a really fun and enjoyable morning for everyone. In terms of Quesada performance in the leagues this season, the new rules allowing squads to field 5 rinks instead of 6 means that most members play most weeks and we’ve been able to enter 3 teams in both the Southern League and the South Alicante League. However this also means we’ve had very low numbers for reserves and this provides Quesada, along with the many of the other Bowling Clubs, with challenges fielding enough teams if there’s illness or holidays. For the most part though, the new system is working well and our members have enjoyed not only some well-earned successes but some challenging games. In the Southern League Division A, the Swallows, have slipped to 6th place so will need to chase hard now to pick up some points. In Division B the Swifts are also doing really well with some good wins recently and have maintained 2nd place in the league just 10 points behind the leaders, Mazarron Miners. Quesada’s Winter League squad have had a few tough games so they’ve slipped to 5th place and will have to work hard to pick up some points to close the gap. In the South Alicante Winter League Enterprise Division, the Pearls are still enjoying some good wins, placing them 4th at the moment with 93 points - trailing Emerald Isle in 3rd place by only one point. At Quesada Bowls Club we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. Crumpets For me on a cold winter’s day there’s nothing like a hot buttered, crispy, squidgy crumpet with my cuppa. Crumpets are quintessential British with a very, very long history! Apparently one the earliest reference is around 1380s. Crumpets were initially hard pancakes baked on a griddle. It wasn’t until the Victorian era when bakers began adding yeast that we have an incarnation of the modern crumpet. Homemade crumpets are fairly easy to make and taste so much better than shop bought.

Butter for greasing tins

To make the crumpets you will need crumpet rings or baking /egg rings. Ingredients 275ml milk 55ml water 225g strong plain flour 1 tsp fine sea salt 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast ½ tsp caster sugar

Time: 1 hour 20 minutes. Makes /Serves 6. Recipe 1. In a sauce pan, gently heat the milk and water until just warm enough to put a finger in and hold it there for a few seconds. 2. Stir in the yeast and sugar. Cover and leave in a warm place for 10 to 15 minutes. The mixture needs to be frothy before it’s mixed into the flour. 3. Into a mixing bowl sift the flour and sea salt. Make a well in the middle. When the yeast mixture is ready; pour it into the bowl. Using a wooden spoon mix gently to form a smooth batter. 4. Cover the bowl with a clean tea towel, leave in a warm place for around 45 minutes or until the batter rises and becomes light and frothy with bubbles. 5. Grease the insides of the rings well with butter. Place a frying pan over a medium heat, add a knob of butter and arrange the

rings in the pan, wait until the butter sizzles then spoon 2 tbsp of the batter into each ring. 6. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, first small bubbles will appear then larger bubbles will appear on the surface and burst. 7. Use a tea towel to protect your fingers to lift the rings and flip the crumpets over and cook for a further 2 minutes. 8. Reheat the pan, grease the crumpet rings and repeat with the remaining batter. 9. Serve the crumpets hot with butter and jam. TIP: For a flavoured crumpet add a bit of spice into the flour, cardamom, chilli or cumin seeds. The Spice Sisters run Indian cookery classes in Spain and UK. Dates for our next 2 retreats in Spain are; 28 May to 2 June and 1 to 6 Oct 2019 at the Akinion Spa and Resort. The recent cold front increases visits to Paediatric A & E due to Bronchiolitis • Premature infants and those younger than six months are at a greater risk of suffering from this infection. • Washing our hands before picking up a baby and avoiding crowded places helps avoid contagion. The recent cold front has made bronchiolitis the most common motive for consultation in children under two and infants arriving at Accident and Emergency. “The symptoms of this infection may vary greatly,” explains Doctor Adalgisa de Caro, Paediatrician at Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia, “and usually start with a cold, nasal mucus, coughing and, sometimes, fever. After one or two days, the cough worsens and the child’s breathing becomes more agitated. Some of them may also experience difficulty breathing and have sounds in their chest, such as whistling or wheezing.” This type of virus has a seasonal pattern, presenting during the cold months of the year, in particular during cold fronts, such as the one we experienced last year. Infants under six months, and those that were born prematurely, are at greater risk of coming down with severe bronchiolitis, or requiring hospital treatment, “as are babies with severe heart or lung conditions, such as cystic fibrosis or bronchio-pulmonary dysplasia, and those with immune system deficiencies,” states Doctor De Caro. Its transmission mechanism is from person to person, due to which the child should not be in contact with family members who have a respiratory infection or a cold. “If this is not possible, avoid coughing close to the child, and wash your hands with soap and water before picking him or her up. You should also avoid crowds, like those at shopping centres or day care centres,” suggests Doctor Maria Ángeles Martín, Paediatrician at del Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia. Another factor that favours infection, and that can worsen its evolution, is tobacco smoke, due to which we advise not smoking close to minors.

The natural course of bronchiolitis can last between 7 and 10 days. “But it is between the second and third day when things can take a turn for the worse,” indicates Doctor Martín, “which is why it is very important for parents and caretakers to know how to recognise the signs and symptoms of breathing difficulties that should alert them to go to a healthcare centre.” Treatment Advice As this pathology has a viral origin, there is no specific or curative treatment. “The objective of the treatment is to control the symptoms through measures such as nasal flushing with saline solution, sleeping in a semi-seated position, and avoiding contact with tobacco smoke,” advises Doctor De Caro. This infection usually includes a fever, due to which anti-febrile medications, such as paracetamol, can be given to alleviate it. “Sometimes bronchodilators are indicated, though their use for bronchiolitis is very controversial, since their efficacy has not been proven in most cases. Depending on the clinical characteristics and the age of the child, the paediatrician may try salbutamol and, in case of a positive response, prescribe it for treatment; otherwise, he or she will recommend all the aforementioned measures, and periodic follow-ups to monitor the child’s evolution,” specifies the specialist from Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia, Maria Ángeles Martín. This respiratory infection requires stricter monitoring in infants under six months and, in particular, in those under three months, since they are at greater risk of developing complications.

The Hearing Clinic, incorporating Premier Hearing Services Since taking charge at Premier Hearing Services, Chris Elcocks has been particularly focused on bringing the very best range of products to us here on the Costa Blanca. Digital technological advances have completely revolutionised the hearing aid world, and as a fitting change to this ever-improving area of science, Chris has decided to modernise the look and focus of the business as well, by renaming the business as ‘The Hearing Clinic’. The Hearing Clinic still offers the friendly personal service that we are used to, but aims to always be at the forefront of what technology has to offer. One of the newest products on the market is ‘Oticon Opn’. Hear better and remember more with less effort Oticon Opn, or Opn for short, is changing more people’s lives with a new world of sound, helping them open up to the world like never before. Opn is the first hearing aid proven to work in harmony with the brain to help people hear better with less effort and to remember more of what is being said. Fast enough to support the brain The processing speed of Opn technology ensures more accurate information about the 360° soundscape. Opn improves your ability to understand speech by up to 30%, so you don't have to work as hard to understand, leaving more mental energy to remember what you hear. Recent studies show that Opn delivers best in class performance when listening to speech in noisy environments, especially when speech is coming from the side. Old technology In complex listening environments where sound sources are many, dynamic and unpredictable, traditional hearing aid technology focuses on one sound source at a time. By reducing all other sound signals - speech and noise alike - it leaves the wearer with a narrowed and artificial listening experience. New Oticon Opn technology Ground breaking digital technology from Oticon is both fast enough, and precise enough, to analyse and follow the dynamics of the soundscape, and to differentiate between speech and noise. By rapidly and precisely reducing noise, it allows you to access and handle multiple speakers simultaneously. It is a major step in achieving clear hearing. If you think or know that you are experiencing hearing loss and would like professional advice, please contact Chris Elcocks of The Hearing Clinic (now incorporating Premier Hearing Services) on 659 644 106 to arrange a FREE hearing consultation. Dental amalgam fillings – are they safe, and should they be replaced? Many of us have metal (amalgam) fillings in our teeth, but some people are concerned about possible harmful side-effects. Is it a good idea to replace them with white fillings? There is no doubt that mercury, one of the components of amalgam, is a toxic material. However, in amalgam it is bound to other elements and is not free to escape. Other than very rare allergies to any of the components of amalgam, no health problems have been attributed to it in over 125 years of use. It is falling out of favour, though. Many dental clinics, including our own, never use it. New legislation banned its use from July 2018 in children and in pregnant and nursing mothers, with further legal restrictions likely to follow. However, this has been brought in due to concerns about contamination of the environment (rather than health concerns over fillings), for example by limiting the use of mercury from all sources including LED light bulbs, fluorescent strips, fertilisers, thermometers and, of course, dental amalgam. White fillings offer several advantages, apart from the obviously nicer appearance. They are more adhesive, meaning less tooth material needs to be removed to ensure the filling stays in place. Many of them are set hard during the placement process, thereby allowing the patient to eat and drink straight away, and some help to reverse early tooth decay by releasing fluoride. So, should we be replacing our metal fillings with white ones? There is no definitive answer. The more times a tooth is disturbed, the greater the risk of future problems, especially with heavily filled teeth. But if an existing amalgam filling fails and needs replacing anyway, it is a good opportunity to place a white one. And if a new cavity develops, only a white filling should be placed. If the appearance of sound, but unsightly metal fillings is a concern, the pros and cons of replacing them should be discussed with your dentist to find the best solution. Should you wish to speak to our informed team with any concerns or book an appointment simply call 96 572 5940 or pop in to Arches British Dental Practice at C/ Los Arcos 19, Quesada.

Connections Team opens more doors…… In July last year HELP Vega Baja launched the Connections Team – a 24-hour confidential, emotional support helpline, providing what is believed to have been the only 24-hour support helpline in the area for some time. The service has gone from strength to strength with the helpline receiving over 100 calls a month on their dedicated phone line 96 502 1552 plus many emails from people seeking support at support@helpvegabaja.com. The team of trained and experienced listeners have also been offering the chance for people to meet them face to face over a cup of tea at the San Miguel Centre of the charity. In order to reach out to more people, further “meeting places” have now been set up. If you would like to meet a member of the Connections Team, you can pop along to any of the meeting places below and be sure of a warm welcome and a listening ear. Monday - HELP Vega Baja San Miguel Centre (2pm – 5pm). Tuesday - Cruz Roja Social Centre, La Marina, Calle Berna (10am– 1pm). Wednesday - HELP Vega Baja San Miguel Centre (2pm – 5pm). Thursday - Hope Christian Fellowship Church, La Marina (10am –1.30pm) opposite Market site. Friday - A.E.C.C. office, lower floor, Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre (10am – 1.30pm). Co-ordinator of the Connections Team, Jane Troubridge said “Since we established the Connections Team, we have been delighted that people have helped to raise awareness of the service we provide. This has enabled us to support a large number of people through some very difficult times in their lives. As the service is part of HELP Vega Baja, we have also been able to offer practical support to people which has proved extremely beneficial. I have been helping people for many years through listening and watching

the recovery through this combination of listening and practical support has been far more than I could have possibly expected”. President of HELP Vega Baja, Michele Masson added “We would like to thank the other charities such as Cruz Roja and the AECC who have been a great support to us by offering their facilities for the team to use. This gives people much greater choice in where to meet our volunteers and the opportunity to support people in a friendly and of course, confidential area. Working alongside the rest of the charity and in particular our Welfare Officer, the Connections Team is now very well established within the charity and a huge benefit to those people who are struggling and in need of support”. Jane is also the trainer for the Connections Team volunteers and is about to start the latest training course for new listeners. If you are interested in finding out about volunteering with Connections, the training and ongoing support, or if you are interested in volunteering in any other area of HELP Vega Baja, contact the charity on 966 723 733 or email office@helpvegabaja.com. Hi All. Apologies to you all if you noticed an error in last month’s review. I inadvertently named the artist as Melissa Fanning, when in fact it was Melissa Jade Williams who was featured in January’s edition. This month, I would like to feature Melissa Fanning. I’ve put my confusion between the two Melissa’s down to an “age thing”. Melissa Fanning, who hails from Drogheda, Co Louth, Ireland became interested in music at a very young age whilst listening to her father’s record and tape (remember them?) collection. She would instinctively sing along to the various genres of music. A few years later Melissa began performing in front of people but found it a totally nerve racking experience. Fortunately, as time passed, the “stage fright” disappeared, and her confidence grew. She gained inspiration from her Uncle Jimmy, a leading vocalist who had performed in many countries around the world.

QF Focus Magazine It was his encouragement and support that convinced Melissa that this was something she really wanted to do. Prior to leaving Ireland, she had gained experience singing in local venues and performing in competitions, always reaching the finals. It was 7 years ago that Melissa moved to Spain. Initially, she worked in a bar here on the South Costa Blanca. But her passion for music was still very much alive. The bar work gave her the opportunity to take part in the Karaoke sessions. What started as an occasional song or two grew in a short time to her being offered a weekly spot to share the stage with the Resident D.J. By now Melissa’s confidence had grown sufficiently, and stage fright was a thing of the long distant past. Singing to audiences without the support of her friends and family was now no problem to this very talented lady. Her popularity grew in a very short space of time, and Melissa felt that it was important to “give something back”. So, she regularly performs at numerous charity events, enjoying contributing to the local community, helping others. Five and a half years after working in a bar, Melissa decided to give it up and pursue her dream of being a professional entertainer. In conversation, Melissa admitted that the past 2 years have been awesome for her. She has loved every minute of performing and has worked in some of the best venues on the Costa Blanca. Last Summer Melissa took a short break and gave birth to her baby girl, but is now preparing, and looking forward to the forthcoming season. Her repertoire covers great numbers from Cilla Black, Alicia Keys, Randy Crawford, Celine Dion, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Sam Cooke, Bruno Mars, Bryan Adams, The Contours, and many more, spanning the decades. So, whether it be a show, a solo performance, private function or presenting a Karaoke night, Melissa’s versatility shines through. Keep an eye on the local press for future engagements, or alternatively, check out Melissa Fanning on Facebook.

Bye for now, D.P.

La Vuelta 2019 On Wednesday 19 December Harry and I were invited guests to the 2019 La Vuelta Presentation in The Auditorium Provincial in the centre of Alicante. This will be the 74th edition of La Vuelta. We arrived at 7pm sharp presented our passes to the stewards at the door and made our way to the grand foyer where everyone was gathering. After a few handshakes and a picture or two, we made our way into the main auditorium where the presentation started at 7.30pm with a 15 minute video showing all the stages that have taken place in the Costa Blanca region in previous years. There were many speeches from various people including Simon Yates who was last years winner of La Vuelta. It was his first grand tour victory with Spain’s Enric Mas finishing second and Columbia’s Miguel Lopez in 3rd place. Simon did a really nice talk about his experiences and the stages of last years event (the only part of the whole evening that was in English). All of the 21 stages for the 2019 La Vuelta were then revealed, the most important one for us was the start which will be an 18km Team Time Trial starting at Las Salinas in Torrevieja on Saturday 24 August. The final stage will be 105km from Fuenlabrada to Madrid on Sunday 15 September with 3272k of racing in between, there are 59 climbs this year which is 13 more than last year. A mountainous second stage starts in Benidorm heading back towards Calpe. It was great to hear and see all the stages on the large screen and also to see all the top Spanish riders, Contador, Valverde, Rodriguez and many more all giving speeches. Valverde’s team were all there supporting him, and it was amazing to see so many people at this event, everyone who has anything to do with cycling was there. It was fantastic to be invited to this event and poor Harry had to sit and translate for me all evening. A well organised evening so here’s looking forward to a great well organised 74th Edition La Vuelta 2019. Team “Cyclogical” meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 5.30pm and Sunday mornings at 8am and cover between 90 and 120kms at a moderate to fast pace so, if you fancy a challenge come along and join us. Looking to improve your fitness, riding ability and speed and also have a new group of friends to train with then why not come along and give it a try or call Gary on 637 487 377.

IF FIVE MILLION PEOPLE is a social media campaign started by Orihuela resident Nick Moore which has a simple premise. If we unite and do good deeds, we can make the world a better place. Recent topics have included: convincing neighbours to recycle, explaining why straws are bad for the planet, sharing a charity’s good work. The page posts great information to show us how to help the planet. It has a growing audience on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and Nick hopes that by sharing environmental messages, good news and also life-hacks via social media we can all make a difference to bring a smile and hope. Nick said “I want to remain positive in a world that is increasingly troubled. I started the page to try to make a difference. I hope people will find it and follow and share my hope for the future”. Forthcoming Events By Keith Nicol It’s hard to believe that it’s February already, and with it, that most romantic month of the year and the start of getting back into the groove after all the festive spirit. February also brings the Carnival fun with a pinch of Rio to the area along with Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday - pancake day, call it what you will, along with the Chinese New Year, Ash Wednesday, St. Valentine’s Day: so lots of love, roses and chocolates throughout the month. Although the number and size of the events in Torrevieja has dropped off over the past three years, the city of salt still has many great Fiestas throughout the year. This year’s Carnival will start in earnest on 9 February, with the fun and colourful National Drag Queen event changing location and now taking place in the fabulous International Auditorium beside QuironSalud Hospital: https://auditoriotorrevieja.com. Torrevieja’s Carnival Contest Parade starts from Plaza María Asunción, just outside Mullins Irish Pub, and continues along Calle Ramón Gallud, past the Virgin del Carmen Cultural Centre, with the main focus of the parade being just in front of the Town Hall Square and finishing at Calle Patricio Pérez street. There is both a Sunday afternoon parade, the competition itself, on 26 February, starting around 4pm while the main event, the evening parade happens the following Saturday evening (2 March), following the same route, from about 9pm although some outlets have said this will start earlier at 5pm, so please check the local papers and websites nearer the time. Wrap up; bring your camera and enjoy the fun while wondering how all the dancers don’t freeze wearing such few clothes. Walking Football fever is now taking off and those 50 and over who fancy kicking a ball around again, ladies included, can now take part in Walking Football. One of the more popular spots for the sport is Los Montesinos on a Tuesday and Friday morning at 10am. It all helps us work off those festive kilos and follow those New Year’s resolutions to lose a few kilos and get fitter during 2019. There are at least another half a dozen local teams, with most of them advertising their playing times in local bar windows and Facebook. During the winter the The Rojales Craft Market at the Cuevas del Rodeo is open on the 1st Sunday of each month in the morning from 11am to 2pm. It’s is a fun place to visit if you are looking for a small gift, piece of art or decoration. Local artists put their work on display along with other craft works to browse and enjoy. Also on the 1st Sunday of each month is the Ace Cafe Classic Car event, on the street outside La Torre Hotel in Los Montesinos from 11am to 1pm. Admission is free. Kids of all ages are invited to attend the Torrellano Miniature Steam Train. It is run by the Friends of the Railways Association and so is normally only open on Saturdays between 4pm and 8pm with Miniature Train Rides during February and March on the 2nd Sunday from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Every month the Friends of the Railways Association host a miniature train event at the railway museum in Torrellano. Donations of 1.50€ per visit are requested.

located beside the airport, for their Caravanning expo: http://www.caravaning-alicante.es/. Also at the IFA is Alicante Gastronómica 2019, the region’s top gastronomy fair from 22 to 25 February offering food, wines, drinks, tastings, demonstrations, it’s your one stop gastronomy dream. Performing at Torrevieja’s International Auditorium for the first time is mentalist and magician Toni Bright, with his magic of the mind show: “Do not believe the truth”. Toni Bright is considered to be one of the best mentalists on the Spanish national scene. He will be in Torrevieja on Saturday 9 February. His dynamic, entertaining and participative magic show is for the whole family and although he performs in Spanish, he’s so visual, that even with a basic knowledge of Spanish, you’ll follow along just fine. There is also a promotion of 4 tickets for the price of 3. https://auditoriotorrevieja.com/eventos/tony-bright. La Compañía Nacional de Danza de España present their Gala of the Stars evening on Saturday 23 February. This special gala features dancers who stand out in the interpretation of the pieces that the company has specially selected for this tour, featuring choreography in the pure classic style as well as contemporary dance. https:// auditoriotorrevieja.com/eventos/compania-nacional-de-danza.

Lest we forget, that most romantic day of the year, St. Valentine’s is on 14 February, so girls, start dropping those hints about romantic presents, chocolates, diamonds, dinner for two and all that, to your man now, just in case he should forget. And ladies, even though it’s not a leap year, until 2020, if he hasn’t popped the question yet, why not get down on your bended knee and put the pressure on him in front of hundreds of people, to say ‘yes’?

Taking a peak into March 1 March is St. David’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day is on the 17th, when everyone is Irish for the day and on the 19th it’s a public holiday for San Jose or Father’s Day. On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 March, the International Auditorium is also host to Expo Torrevieja III, the region’s premier International Lifestyle show. With more than 50 stands, clubs and associations weekend, classic car display, N332 answering questions about driving in Spain, info about a new local film being shot in Spain, lots of Brexit info, plus a host of products and services to help enhance your quality of life on the Costa. Doors are open 10am until 3pm and admission and car parking are free.

If you have an interest in caravans, mobile homes and accessories, then you should consider a visit to the IFA Exhibition centre,
