EARTH'S LATEST SPACECRAFT As I write this column in March, the news has been full of the very successful flight of Space X Dragon crew capsule, the latest version of their beautifully designed spacecraft. What many people might not be aware of is that this is just one of 3 new capsules that will be flying in the coming years. The Dragon will be in service alongside Boeing's Starliner, which is due for a test flight to the International Space Station in April. A quick glance at these 2 craft might lead you to think that they are much the same, and broadly speaking they are, but with 2 major differences. The new Starliner is only designed to get to low Earth orbit, that's where the Space Station is, and it can only keep its crew alive for about 60 hours. The Dragon is designed to do this but also to get to Lunar orbit, and can keep the crew alive much longer. This is where I introduce you to the third new spacecraft, the Orion. Built as a European / American venture, it's quite a bit bigger than our first 2, carrying a crew of up to 6 on flights lasting 3 weeks, it's also what is called a trans Lunar spacecraft. From that brief introduction you can't have missed the fact that Earth will soon have 2 new machines able to transport people to the Moon’s orbit. Why? You might ask. Well, anyone who reads my jottings regularly might remember me mentioning that there are now many countries with space vehicles orbiting and occasionally landing on the Moon, but these are all unmanned probes. Without doubt there is a huge push toward the inevitable return to the Moon by humans, and the use of the Moon as a staging post for the future. One last new machine in this story that hasn't had much publicity is a new mini space station called the Lunar Orbital Platform, usually just called the Gateway. As its name infers it will orbit the Moon, not Earth, and provide an essential staging post and research facility. It's scheduled to fly in the mid 2020s, but my bet is at least 2030, so don't hold your breath waiting for it. Now a bit of personal opinion about all this. Yes, I love the new machinery, it's clever, reliable and exciting, but, it's already out of date. The Orion is so big, it's near the limit of what can return to Earth by parachute, and all these capsules are developments of the wonderful but old 1960s Apollo systems. They use heat shields and parachutes, and waste the expensive service modules that make them work. I believe the future may be in the Space X Big Falcon Rocket (BFR) now in development. It uses powered decent and combines the service module with the second stage so all can be landed and re used. The downside? I might be long gone by the time it's flying, and I haven't enough room here to tell you all about it - Maybe next month.

It won’t be long now until the Easter bunny hops into our lives yet again, hopefully with the abundance of chocolates but not the rain it usually brings at Easter time. As always there will be the many Easter parades to watch in the local towns that usually last from Thursday until Sunday. As the old bridge in Rojales is currently under major works and this being the main passing / viewing point, it will be interesting to see if the works are completed on time to allow the processions to follow their usual path. These works (although necessary) have caused major disruption on the roads and have definitely affected business for the local shops, bars and restaurants. However, fortunately it is short lived and will hopefully be a huge improvement to the area. I’ve just booked our annual weekend away to Mojacar for the end of the month so I’m hoping for some nice weather to be able to relax in the sun and wind down after what has been a hectic time and also recharge our batteries in preparation for what is set to be another busy summer. If you are looking for a day out then the upcoming Homes Gardens and Lifestyle exhibition is a must. This event will be held on the 5th and 6th of April at the Villa Gadea Hotel in Altea, a beautiful venue in serene surroundings. As well as many prizes and special offers being available from exhibitors, you will also get the chance to win €250 from ourselves at Female Focus Publications so make sure you visit my colleagues for your chance to win. See the back page for more information. Congratulations to Sally Realey from Callosa de Segura who won last month's 50€ competition after spotting the logo on page 14. See if you can spot the logo in this issue for a chance to win 50€, see inside for details of how to enter. Good luck!

TRICKSTER by Sam Michaels Georgina Garrett was born to be ruthless and she's about to earn her reputation. As World War One is announced a baby girl is born. Little do people know that she's going to grow up to rule the streets of Battersea. With a father who steals for a living, a grandmother who's a woman of the night and a mother long dead, Georgina was never in for an easy life. But after a tragic event left her father shaken he makes a decision that will change the course of all their lives – to raise Georgina as George, ensuring her safety but marking the start of her life of crime... About Sam Michaels: Sam Michaels writes gritty gangland sagas set in Battersea, South London, which is where she was born and bred, the council estates being her playground. After leaving school at sixteen with no qualifications, Sam married soon after and had a son. The marriage ended quickly, and as a single mother, she worked in various retail positions until undertaking an Open University degree. This led to Sam becoming an analytical scientist and then into technical sales where she met her husband. A few years later, they moved from Hampshire to Spain. It was then that her mother, the Sunday Times best-selling author, Kitty Neale, inspired Sam to put pen to paper. She now writes her novels in sunnier climates with the company of her husband, four dogs and six cats. Praise for Sam Michaels: ‘Sam Michaels is an exciting new author and Trickster is a must-read! Captivating and fast-paced, this first book in the Georgina Garrett series is a real page-turner that I highly recommend’ Sunday Times bestselling author, Kitty Neale. ‘A terrific debut – read it and be hooked!’ Jessie Keane, bestselling author of Lawless. ‘This was a great action-packed thriller and I enjoyed it from first to last.’ Tia Ayuzawa, NetGalley ‘What a cracking debut book!’ Kim Mooney, NetGalley ‘I loved every single minute of this book!’ Shirley Jones, NetGalley Find Sam Michaels: You can follow Sam Michaels on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SamMichaelsAuthor or on Twitter www.twitter.com/SamMichaelsGG Trickster is available to order on Amazon, Kobo and Google Books. eBook: April 2019 | 99p, PBO: July 2019 | £7.99.

Folix Láminas SL ∙ Window tinting: Sun protection for your home and work place Folix Protection Window Films allow you to let the light in and keep the heat and damage out. Our Protection Window Films are designed not only to reject solar heat, reduce fading of furnishings and carpets by blocking up to 99% of UV rays, but also help improve comfort, safety, and add privacy. The benefits of installing protection window films are also energy saving, up to 30% of energy costs, and it helps hold glass in place if shattered. Thanks to new technology, in the summer, the film rejects the heat reducing the heat that enters the room. And in the winter, the opposite happens, the film actually acts as a thermal barrier, thus reducing the heat loss from the interior of the home. The average home that installs window films will make back their investment in approximately three years. The window film requires no maintenance and has a service life of ten years. “This product is brilliant. I am happy with the protection window film. It does what it said it would do and looks great too,” says Mr. Olef, homeowner in Torrevieja and customer of Folix. Now he benefits from lower heating and cooling bills by installing Folix Protection Window Films. “My house in the summer was like an oven” said Mr. Olef. “I have 16 big windows, so as the sun rises in the morning the temperature creeps up and up and then stays at an average of 35 degrees. As soon as the protection window film was on my windows you could really feel the difference. I looked into all the other alternatives, but this was the cheapest. The installation was so fast, just taking one and a half days, without noise and dirt. I would recommend this company to anyone who needs a window film”. Antiquity Certificate / Retrospective Licence An individual denounces 300 illegal extensions to properties affecting 800 owners after being fined with 18,200€ for glazing in a patio with no licence. The Spanish news has reported on a scandal that happened in Salamanca, were a pensioner named Tristan glazed in his patio to extend his property by 18sqm. He was denounced and fined 18,200€ by the Town Hall for not having a licence. After the fine was notified, the gentleman was so upset that he made the decision to walk around the streets denouncing randomly all enclosed terraces, porches and extensions he could see. Finally, the national news reported he had denounced 300 properties with over 800 owners affected. The Town Hall is enforced by law to take action and fine after a denuncia has been made and as a result of Tristan’s massive denouncing process, an everlasting queue of denounced owners has caused the planning department of the Town Hall to collapse and it has become a politic issue in the city. However, the Spanish planning system allows owners to retrospectively obtain a certificate to avoid being fined. Whenever the property has been extended, altered or had a pool built without a proper building licence, by having a Retrospective Licence/Antiquity Certificate building works already carried out become unobjectionable and they can no longer be fined. The Antiquity Certificate/Retrospective Licence is also the document needed at the Notary to update the Title Deeds (Escritura) with any alterations introduced to the property and vendors use it to avoid putting off potential buyers, due to the existence of undeclared or unlicensed building work. The requirements to obtain a Retrospective Licence for any alterations, extensions or pools are as follows: ·Murcia: The extension or pool needs to be over four years old. ·Almeria: The extension or pool needs to be over six years old. ·Alicante: The extension or pool needs to be over four years old, before the 20th August of 2014 (minimum 9 years). Martinez de la Casa Architects is one of the most prominent and respectable practices in the area, providing all types of Certificates and Licences, amongst other services. We are the Number 1 company in EPC Certificates (121€ inc IVA) and Number 1 for Antiquity Certificates (pools 229€ inc IVA, extensions 326€ inc IVA) and Habitation Licences (from 118€ inc IVA, Town Hall tax not included, depending on each municipality). For all enquiries or to arrange an appointment, please call 665 810 411 or visit www.martinezdelacasa.com to see over 200 testimonials on their services.

Are you grieving today? So many people are. Sometimes it is hard to deal with what appears to be a devastating loss, but sometimes it appears that others cope with it, so why can’t we? When we experience any kind of loss, whether it is the loss of a loved one, a dream, or a relationship, feelings may arise within us that are overwhelming or difficult to accept. This sense of grief can also come up when we are separated from anyone or anything we have welcomed into our lives. And while it may feel like we are caught up in a neverending spiral of sadness and emptiness, it is important to remember that the grief we are feeling is not a permanent condition, or rather, it need not be. Grief is part of the process of letting go that in many ways can be viewed as a kind of gift, allowing us to go deeper within ourselves to rediscover things we had not previously been aware of. The emotions that follow any kind of loss can be intense and varied. A sense of shock or denial is often the first reaction, often then replaced by anger. Does that surprise you? While there are stages of grief that people go through - moving from denial to anger to depression to acceptance - grief often moves in spirals, sometimes circling forward and then back again. You may even experience moments of strength, faith, and laughter in between. While these emotions seem to come and go, it is important to feel them, accept them, and allow them to flow. With time, patience, and compassion, you can eventually find your normal emotions again. I think it is important to realise that as we move through our grief, we may find ourselves reluctant to release our pain, and the reason for this is that we may be afraid that we are letting go of who or what we have lost. At this moment in time grieving is part of living. You can be strengthened by it, by appreciating what used to be. There are answers to be found to deal with all the questions we need to ask someone. Until the next time! Take care!

A View From The Top
Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up.
A Stroll Around Quesada.
&
Sitting in the house drinking a nice morning cup of tea and thinking about what I shall do today. After having a nose through the living room window and seeing that it is a lovely warm spring day, I decide to visit Quesada and give it the once over. I live adjacent to Quesada in Benijofar and although I do drive in and around Quesada, I usually avoid the main street and use my back street knowledge to navigate my way around and through the main area of town. On this occasion however I decided to park the car near the Quesada arches and go walkabout. The first thing I noticed was how busy the main street in Quesada is: The second thing I noticed is that despite several promises from the Local Council, the long awaited civil works to the main street have still not been carried out. It must be over a year ago that residents were told that the project was on hold and would have to wait until the tourist season was over. Well we are now approaching another tourist season and still
QF Focus Magazine nothing has been done. The problem is becoming not one of when the work will be done, but one of whether the work will ever get done. Quesada is expanding rapidly as is Benijofar and the surrounding countryside ...soon Quesada will be almost too busy to ever close the main street for civil engineering works. Quesada has a nice arched entrance which gives the visitor a feeling that something special is going on inside the arches ...well dear visitor I can tell you what is going on and it’s something of an urban mess. As one walks around it soon becomes obvious that town centre planning has been thrown to the four winds. Those of you who know my ramblings will have read my thoughts on the upturned skips and the chaos that is car parking in Quesada. Since my last wander through Quesada's mean streets another thing that is all too obvious is the number of Estate agents that have set up in business within the environs of Quesada main street. Along with the estate agents have come the all in one restaurants. Now I love Indian food ...I also enjoy fish and chips ...I also enjoy the occasional pizza and of course tapas are high on my list of yummy treats. What I also enjoy is picking a restaurant to eat in whilst I indulge my food fancy. What I cannot get my head around are these all in one restaurants that serve all of the mentioned foods together in the same place at the same table ...I have this mad image in my head of a chef putting on a Turban to prepare my curry ...then putting on a Fez to carve my Kebab ...before playing the Three Tenors continued
QF Focus Magazine whilst he, the same person, knocks up the dough for my pizza. I know, I know, it’s called progress in some people’s minds but not in mine. I see the lack of planning control as the simple pursuit of money over civic control...I asked a couple of years ago via this column ...where are all the additional services that an expanding population needs? Where are the extra Doctors? Where are the extra police officers? With more people eventually will come more children ...you cannot start to provide young people’s services ..medical ..leisure ..schools etc when the kids are born, by then it is too late ...forward thinking has to be exactly what it says it is ...forward. Come on Quesada Council ...get your fingers out and take control ...elections are coming up very soon ...if you cannot stand the heat then get out of the kitchen.
Football, the not so Beautiful Game. Something is happening in the world of football and it's something that is not very nice. I perceive that the game of my youth is about to turn nasty and ugly ..as nasty and ugly as it was in my youth. I still remember being fenced in ...I still remember huddling in doorways as unrully thugs rampaged past us homegoing fans after a game ...and I still remember the massive police presence that was part of the Saturday afternoon ritual that was English football in the early seventies. Sadly just as several Football Clubs are starting to talk about trying to re-introduce standing areas at football grounds to make the game more atmospheric and cheaper at the sametime ...some cretin comes along in the guise of a Birmingham City supporter and attacks an opposition player whilst the game is in motion. Two things come to mind ...firstly, supporter the attacker is most certainly not ...the word you are looking for is thug ...Secondly for attacking the player (from behind...the thug was that brave) the sentence handed out is 14 weeks in goal ...(out in seven for good behaviour) and a 100 pound fine is just not sufficient a deterrent ...the sentence should have been in years and the fine in thousand plus pounds territory ...and that Dear Reader is from a soft left of centre liberal.
Brexit Nonsense.
Page 11
Crazy goings on in Parliament this week (March 11th onwards) ...everybody stabbing everybody else in the political rump ...everybody demanding that their version of Democracy is the only true version and everybody blaming somebody else for their own particular failures. The high spot for me however was when The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom ...one Teresa May placed a government motion on the order paper...This motion on not having a No Deal Brexit she subsequently thought was not strong enough so she ...Planned to defeat herself, then decided not to defeat herself by defeating herself, then she lost. To HERSELF. How mad can British politics get?

RBL visit a Moorish Teahouse ty
Communsi Event
A band of intrepid members of the Gran Alacant and La Marina branch of the RBL in Spain, recently visited the Carmen del Campillo Arabian Teahouse.
Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, but very close to the main road from Crevilente to Albertera, this tranquil oasis is like nothing we had ever seen before. A haven of tranquillity and shade. Inside the decorative gates, there are exotic gardens illuminated by Arabian lanterns as dusk approached, and a large winding property with a labyrinth of different furnished rooms, some with roaring log fires. There are peacocks roaming the grounds, piped Arabian music and a tepee on one of the terraces of the tea house. The gardens are woven intricately throughout the house, with trees even poking out through the roof. We rested our legs in the courtyard, with wonderfully coloured shrubs, vines, and ferns dangling all around us. There we partook of various teas and fruit smoothies, accompanied by nutty pastries dripping with honey. The Gran Alacant & La Marina branch of the Royal British Legion, meets on the first Monday of each month at 6pm in Lounge D, Plaza Mayor, Gran Alacant. New members are always made most welcome, and remember you do NOT have to be ex-services to join us. For more details please contact granalacant.secretary@rbl.community. If you or anyone you know is in need of help or assistance please phone 676 451 780.
RBL Torrevieja celebrate St David’s Day
Once again there was a full house at Harry’s Bar in Quesada for the Torrevieja branches St David’s day celebrations.
After a fabulous Welsh meal, which included lamb of course, there was poetry, singing, and plenty of laughter. To start the entertainment a lovely moving poem was read out by the organiser of the day, Mrs Dianne Budd, which was written by Mr Wm. Owen to his mother just before he went into battle in the First World War, and is now on display in the museum of Wales. It was made that bit more special because Mr Leo Wynn his grandson was present to hear it being read out. There were some great soloists to keep us entertained and our packed room were a fantastic choir. Another fantastic St David’s Day was had by all, roll on next year.

Hopefully after a few more fun, or should we say practise days, they are hoping to play a few friendly games against other petanca teams in the area, and possibly meet up and play against other Legion branches. The branch meet the second Friday of the month at the bowls club in San Luis, Casa Ventura, meetings starts at 7pm. If anyone is interested in playing either petanca or joining our excellent bowls team the Legionnaires, we would love to see you come along, you don’t have to be ex forces to play or join. The people on the door will give you all the information you need, plus there is usually entertainment following the short meeting. Hope to see you at our next meeting on 12 April. Allan. Sec. SAMM Racing Season Starts
Both officials and competitors were keen to enjoy the first race day of the new SAMM season so arrived early, got everything ready for a prompt start but were then delayed because laying the course proved a problem. A net, several hundred metres long, had been laid parallel to the shore which squeezed the available water to a long, narrow slot.
The wind was SW, very moderate and five boats started the first race, which was of “Average Lao” format, but by the first mark the wind had become ESE. The finishing order was Topaz, Ginetta, Cuatro and Uno. On corrected time this changed to Julian Singleton on the Topaz, Ginetta, Cuatro, Uno. For the second race the course was changed to a triangular so the boats sailed anti-clockwise from the start inside the nets, then port around first buoy and then a longish leg to windward towards the SE around second buoy with a return to the gate passing between the end of fishing net markers and a moored ferry before a tight turn back through the gate. Following a few incidents, the result on corrected time was Jack Moss, Robert Hudson and Bob Lagden on Cuatro, Topaz, Ginetta, Uno with only 8 seconds separating the Topaz and Ginetta, that’s close racing. The SAMM Race Program is open to all boat owners and sailors, including non-SAMM members, of any nationality, sex or age. You need no previous racing experience as many of our competitors did not sail until they came to Spain. Do chlorine and sunlight affect hair colour? The answer is yes! It’s time to take action and start protecting our hair, scalp and colour from the sun! Who doesn’t love the beach, pool, water parks in the summer? We all do but your hair doesn’t. This can have major effects on our hair for example our lovely blond hair turning green from the chlorine, our colour completely fading from the sun, the dryness and damaged feel we are left with after going to the beach… At the end of the summer we just feel like cutting it off completely, and lots of people do as their hair is left dry, dull and damaged from the UV rays. It’s time to prevent this from happening and start taking more care of our hair, especially living on the Costa Blanca as the sun is always shinning. Here are some important tips on how to stop any of the above affecting your hair this summer. Make sure you always cover your hair when by the pool or at the beach, apply a leave in conditioner to keep it hydrated, especially after your colour or chemical treatments. It is highly recommended to use a professional salon shampoo, mask, and leave in a UV sun protection spray as this will completely protect your colour from fading and will remove salts and chlorine from the hair and scalp. After having contact with chlorine make sure you rinse your hair with the above products to stop any green tones appearing in the hair. It’s very important to visit your local salon every week or two weeks to have an in salon treatment applied to strengthen and hydrate the hair. Quesada Bowls Club Report
Sponsored by
by Dee Stephenson
We’re still in the winter season, but the mild and sunny weather has continued throughout February and now into March making for very pleasant bowling conditions for our squads. While our squads battle it out on the greens in sunny Spain, we’re proud to wave off Terry Morgan who has once again been picked as part of the Spanish National team for the competition in Cyprus. There are 5 teams involved this year, Cyprus, Israel, Isle of Man, Jersey and Spain. Best of luck to Terry and the squad. This month our bowlers, along with all of the other clubs, have been working towards achieving the best possible end to the season. So there's been fierce but friendly competition on the rinks both home and away. But with some great results, QBC have worked hard to consolidate or improve their positions in the leagues. As we head into the last matches in the winter season, here’s the highlights of the league performances at the time of going to press: In the Southern League Division A, the Swallows, have moved up to 4th position, only 8 points behind Emerald Isle Cavaliers. With the last game to play, hopefully they can maintain this position to the end of the season. In Division B, after a clean sweep against La Manga, the Swifts reduced the gap between them and San Miguel to 7 points. They now go to La Siesta for the last match of the season, knowing that realistically they need at least 10 points to be in with a chance of finishing 2nd. Getting 10 or even 12 points is well within their capabilities, however, the problem will be whether Montemar Matadors can take 8 points off San Miguel - stranger things have happened. Good luck Swifts! Following some great performances, Quesada’s winter league squad have moved up to 4th place in the league, 4 points ahead of Emerald Isle. Their final match will be away against El Cid. In the South Alicante Winter League Enterprise Division, the Pearls are still grappling with San Miguel Beagles for 3rd and 4th place. So one last push is needed to secure a good win in the final match of the season, playing away against Vistabella Albatrosses. Finally, after a hard fought match our Federated 4s Panthers achieved an excellent 4 all draw against San Miguel Cherokees and finished the season with a very credible 3rd place out of 5 teams in division one. Considering that we only had a basic squad of around 15 players to choose from week in week out, they can be proud of what they have achieved. The Squad Captain, Steve Hibberd and Vice Captain Abby Benson thanked the team for the dedication and loyalty shown, at a time when most of them were bowling 3, if not 4, times a week. They all did Quesada Bowling Club proud!

The Coffee Shop in El Raso has now been open almost 18 months and has built up a regular client base. In 2018 we were one of the 3 finalists for The Best Coffee Shop and are hoping to achieve the same or more in 2019.
This family run business with myself Julie and my daughter Summer initiated from our knowledge of the area and that there was nowhere to go for just a coffee and cake that wasn't a bar. The Coffee Shop is located in the courtyard between The Med bar and the vets on the left side of the commercial center on entering El Raso, just off the Lemon Tree Road, and there is a lovely outside south facing peaceful terrace. We serve light breakfasts and lunches, homemade cakes and homemade pasties which are a big hit. Our bespoke cakes for all occasions or themed celebrations such as St Patrick's day, Mother's day, Valentine's day, birthdays, anniversaries and baby showers are very popular. We pride ourselves with good quality 100% natural coffee, with many compliments received and we have a special offer of buy one regular coffee and get one free when mentioning QF Focus during April. Each month we try and offer different events to the community, with a pie and mash night every 2nd Friday of every month. On the last Thursday of each month we have a ladies coffee morning where we have different stalls, shoes, clothes, jewellery, CBD oil, make-up, crystals and much much more and also offer a Q&A/Demo on one subject. We had a talk on cbd oil in February and March we had a demo with Younique make-up. We began stocking reading books as a "Borrow a book" which in turn has led on to a book club starting a couple of months ago and this is building with every meeting that is held. We love getting the community together and are open to suggestions. Every Thursday at 5.30pm we have a slimming club run by Jill Warren based on slimming world, this has been going just over a year and we have many successful members and again people have met new friends due to this group. Every Tuesday we have Rosie in teaching Spanish from 11am for an hour lesson in a group form. Afternoon teas are just one of our specialities and can be provided on any day with 48 hours notice, perfect for a birthday, baby shower or just for friends however big or small. Drastic Changes in Temperature cause Five out of every Ten Visits to A & E Both high and low temperatures have an effect on our health, and are determining factors for the body’s thermal regulation centre, having an adverse effect on some of our physiological functions, and even modifying the power of our defences in the face of pathogenic microorganisms, say specialists at our Murcia and Torrevieja Quirónsalud Hospitals. “Therefore, while high temperatures will favour gastrointestinal pathologies, low temperatures are often more favourable for respiratory pathologies, the cause of five out of every ten visits to Accident and Emergency” states Doctor Fulgencio Molina, Head of the Accident & Emergency Service at Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia. One of the most significant effects of cold temperature is vasoconstriction, which causes changes at the cardiovascular level, increasing blood pressure and heart rate, as well as in the nasal area, where it causes mucus to become denser. “Vasoconstriction caused by low temperatures” warns Doctor Gemma Ramón, Family Physician at Quirónsalud Torrevieja, “increases the likelihood of myocardial infarction in patients with cardiovascular risk, and favours the formation of thrombi. For its part, nasal vasoconstriction reduces our capabilities to eliminate the viruses we inhale which, together with the fact that we spend more time in places with no ventilation, such as offices, schools, etc., increases the risk of contagion of viral respiratory diseases such as catarrh, flu or pneumonia”. These viral respiratory diseases can include low-grade fever, bone and muscle pain, general malaise, cough and mucus, and can even become complicated in patients with chronic illnesses such as cardiac diseases, COPD and diabetes, presenting, in these cases, more severe symptoms, such as high fever, chest pain and dyspnoea or difficulty breathing. This is also the case for obese patients, smokers, and people older than 65 or younger than 5, points out Doctor Ramón. In order to avoid all these illnesses, the specialists at Quirónsalud recommend getting vaccinated, especially for the high-risk population, avoiding exposure to drastic changes in temperature, increase the ingestion of fruits, in particular citruses, and medical supervision for the most vulnerable population. Book Review by Ivor Kindle
Book title: Child 44 Author: Tom Rob Smith Publisher: Simon and Schuster It's 1953 and Stalin is coming to the end of his rule over Soviet Russia. Society is effectively a police state where Stalin and Stalinism hold sway. The lead character in this story is an MGB officer named Leo Demidov. Demidov is a respected agent of the secret police but has made an enemy of a close colleague. This is a dark disturbing story essentially about a serial killer ...however in Soviet Russia the state is always right and the individual has no rights. All the dark secrets of Stalinism are in this book. The knock on the door at 4am ...the transportations to the Gulags ...and the question everyone is in fear of "Are you an enemy of the state?" This is a dark disturbing story ...it is also one of the best books I have read. Treat yourself you will not be disappointed.

Cycling the Sierra Espuña The Sierra Espuña regional park is by far the area in Murcia of the most outstanding natural beauty and is the first protected natural area in the Murcia region. We travel here three to four times a year to cycle the great roads and tracks that it has to offer. The Sierra Espuña has been part of the Tour of Valencia and the Tour of Spain on a number of occasions and is a fantastic hill climb. We normally travel to the outskirts of Alhama de Murcia for this great monster of a climb. We start off at a leisurely pace with everyone talking for approx. 1km however we soon start climbing, gradually at first but it soon gets steeper and steeper, and the speaking fritters out. On the way up we pass many parking / BBQ areas. We carry on regardless and after approx. 45 minutes we pass the central point with the restaurant where we usually stop and regroup. Just past here we are still climbing and reach the start of the 26 switch backs which are fantastic - the average gradient here is 8% - 10%. Up and up we go until eventually it levels off to about 4% and we eventually arrive at the view point. At the view point there are usually loads of people stopping taking pictures including us, the views are incredible and you can see for miles. After a quick 5 minute stop, we are off again still climbing, this time the grades reach 15% - 18% for another 5kms up to the military observation station which is a controlled zone and is fenced off. Here you really feel on top of the world and sometimes we are even higher than the clouds. On the way back down we travel at a considerable pace and it usually only takes about 30 minutes to get right back down to the Restaurant Ora and the cars where we get a large table in the sun and order beer and tapas before heading back home. This is a brilliant but tough ride which you can add onto if you want by coming down a different route, or cycle the back roads home all the way to Quesada passing through Mula, Pliego, Archena, Fortuna, La Murada, Orihuela and Hurchillo before hitting the home straight. If you haven’t done it before then what are you waiting for - give it a bash. Gary and Lynn are available at Cyclogical in Quesada from 9.30am until 5.30pm Monday to Friday and from 10am until 2pm on a Saturday to help and assist you with all your cycling requirements. Call 637 487 377 or www.cyclogicalcostablanca.com or find us on Facebook.

Hi All! Good grief! April already? Where is the time going.
On the plus side this is generally the start of the season, so hopefully, this year will be a busy one, for everyone. This month, I’d like to feature a very well established Artiste here on the Costa Blanca. Nikki G, who hails from Gloucester, in the UK, moved to Spain in 2004 to take time out and visit her parents who, at that time, had recently retired here. Nikki’s introduction to music came at an early age when she began singing in school productions, and simultaneously enrolling in the local choir. It was when she was 14 years of age, that a local businessman started a record label, and recognised her talent straight away. The record label was working with Diane Youdale (Jet from T.V’s Gladiators) in the same recording studio as Nikki, who had just recorded an album, and was performing at many local events. The record producers were very encouraging, and gave Nikki a grounding on how to survive in the music business (which can be brutally tough, at times). They pushed her to be the best that she could. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out as Nikki had hoped, and she subsequently gave up all aspirations of being a singer.
QF Focus Magazine As she worked her way through College, away from home, she would join friends at the local pub. This period of time was when Karaoke was a new concept. So, Nikki began singing again, and regained her confidence once more, and used this opportunity to develop her much varied taste in different musical genres. In a very short time, she represented Great Britain in the Karaoke World Championships in Finland. Whilst there, she made lasting friendships with other vocalists who have gone on to be successful singers in their own countries. It was then Nikki moved to Spain, where, before finding employment, would spend time in some of the local bars, getting into the spirit of Karaoke. It was not her intention to perform as a profession, but she was given a break by a local venue owner, who, after hearing her sing, promised her regular work in his bar if she invested in her own equipment - which she duly did. Nikki received full support from her parents in this new venture .. even her Dad took on the role of “Roadie”! Over the years that have followed, Nikki G has partnered up with many talented acts here on the South Costa Blanca. The very talented Eddie Wallace gave Nikki the opportunity to explore her musical theatre side, when they teamed up to do a musical show. When Eddie Wallace returned to the UK, Stevie Spit asked to join her. From that day, Stevie and Nikki have become close friends and still perform their shows. Stevie Spit and Nikki also work together in “Fusion”, a collaboration with Jay Marwick and his dancers, incorporating “Bad Habits”, a tribute to the songs from the film Sister Act, along with vocal performer, Bee Rumble. They have completed a UK tour with Fusion, performed numerous times at Gay Pride in Benidorm and at the Benidorm Palace, sharing the stage with many celebrities over the years. Nikki G has worked continually with local charities, and fund raising events, and is proud to have helped many worthy causes. She has several different shows to offer for 2019, including “Total Divas” - all the songs from the greatest Divas in history, The Songs of Queen, Anastacia Tribute, plus her own solo show, suitable for any venue. Check out the local press for future Bye for now, D.P. engagements, or look in at Nikki G on Facebook.

Forthcoming Events By Keith Nicol It's April already and for a change, Easter is later than usual with Easter Sunday falling on the 21 April, the Cadbury creme eggs are all waiting to be eaten and spring is in the air. Last month thousands of people headed to Cabo Roig to enjoy probably the largest St. Patrick's Day Parade on mainland Europe, and keeping the Irish theme going, the second Irish Pub Route, a sort of Irish Tapas route, or better still, a Pub and Grub Crawl takes place over the Easter weekend throughout the Orihuela Costa region. The second Irish Pub Route features 31 participating Irish pubs, with the Orihuela town Hall providing a couple of coaches to help you visit each and every one of the pubs, for this “Irish Pub Crawl”, so everybody can travel around the route safely. Each bar will offer a drink and a 'tapa' (finger food) for 2.50€. In addition, they have many special offers and entertainment. Fun-loving participants will be able to vote by a special 'app' or at ballot boxes for the “the best drink & tapa”, “the best pub atmosphere” and “the best decorated pub”. Join the 'crawl' for the “Craic” on 20 and 21 April. Easter Week or Semana Santa has been declared an event of Tourist Interest by the Government of Valencia. Torrevieja's Easter Week began in 1981, although it dates back to the 19th Century. With a total of 14 brotherhoods, this Easter Week has its own idiosyncrasy, with an important artistic heritage made up of thrones, imagery, embroidery, jewellery work, etc. This is an Easter Week that has managed to combine the town’s cosmopolitan aspect with brotherhoods and bearers of religious images of different nationalities, making this religious celebration a truly unique religious event. Although there are processions and events every day over the Easter period, the two main processions take place on the Monday evening, at 10am, before Easter, and on Good Friday, at 8pm. Many local towns have their own events too. If you are seeking a little easy diversion in Torrevieja, why not visit the Museo del Mar y de la Sal, the Eras de la Sal, the Casino and for a payment of 2€, an opportunity to visit Spain's only decommissioned Submarine, which is open to the public, the S-61 Delfin and the Albatros, a former Customs Patrol Boat. Torrevieja's newest tourist attraction is the opportunity to visit the salt works. Discover the salt produced in the Natural Park of the Lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja on this singular scene: The amazing Pink Lake. This protected area has a total surface of 3.700 hectares of which 2.100 hectares are water, 1.400 hectares in the lagoon of Torrevieja and 700 Ha. of La Mata. The salt lake of Torrevieja is the number one salt producer in Europe and the only one that uses floating machines for the salt extraction. During this visit, which takes place on the little train from in front of the Waterfall beside the Casino, you can admire the salt mountains called “GARBERAS” which can rise up to 20 m high, like a seven floor building. You will also discover some amazing details like the numerous uses of salt or why the water on the lake has pink colour. It is important to remember that it is a protected area and bathing on the lake is not allowed. The tour takes approximately one hour and starts from Paseo de la Libertad, opposite Waldo Calero square (fountain square) The tours leave at: 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00h. Prices: Adults: 7,95€, Children(2 to 12 years old): 6,95€, Retired (over 65): 6,95€
Page 33 For the young and young at heart – the 9th Salon Of The Manga And Japanese Culture Of Alicante takes place at the IFA Fair Ground, beside the Airport, on 13 and 14 April. The Manga and Japanese Culture Fair in Alicante is an event developed at the Alicante Trade Fair Institution that began in 2011. Since then, they have always strived to offer attendees a piece of Japan, giving special importance to their traditional culture but without forgetting Manga and Anime. The richness of Japanese culture is the perfect channel to achieve a form of didactic and fun entertainment. Their objective is none other than to spread and teach Japanese culture through the more than 200 activities that take place during the event. More info: www.smalicante.com. Torrevieja's Symphony Orchestra returns to the The International Auditorium on Saturday 6 April to present a special Film Music Concert. It's a selection of music from major films including Africa, Jurassic Park, Gladiator, Schindler's List and other popular choices. For fans of classic, American and exotic cars, don't miss the Ace Cafe gathering outside La Torre Hotel in Los Montesinos. The event attracts upwards of 100 cars each month and it's free for all to participate by bringing along your pride and joy, or to visit. Cars are on display from about 10.30am to 12.30pm. There is also a new gathering of classic cars taking place on the last Sunday morning of each month in Pilar de la Horadada, beside the Black Bull Roundabout, at the turn off the N332, going south, just before the Lo Monte Hotel, along with a small market and car boot sale. During the winter the The Rojales Craft Market at the Cuevas del Rodeo is open on the 1st Sunday of each month in the morning from 11am to 2pm. It's is a fun place to visit if you are looking for a small gift, piece of art or decoration. Local artists put their work on display along with other craft works to browse and enjoy. For a little bit of fun for all ages there is also the Torrellano Miniature Steam Train. It is run by the Friends of the Railways Association and so is normally only open on Saturdays between 4pm and 8pm with Miniature Train Rides from November to April on the 2nd Sunday of every month from 10.30am to 1.30pm and May to October the 2nd Saturday of every month between 4.30pm and 7.30pm. Their Train Museum is open every Saturday from 4pm to 8pm. Donations of 1.50€ are the norm to enjoy the experience. Looking ahead to May, you will want to purchase your tickets ASAP, as 80's superstar and pop idol Paul Young will be performing at the International Auditorium on 26 May. This is a charity fundraising concert for Rock Against Cancer and Cancer Research UK. Paul is famous for hit singles such as “Love of the Common People”, “Wherever I Lay My Hat”, “Come Back and Stay”, “Every Time You Go Away” and “Everything Must Change”, all reaching the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and released in 1983. His debut album No Parlez, the first of three UK numberone albums, made Paul Young a household name and his smooth yet soulful voice belonged to a genre known as “blue-eyed soul”. At the 1985 Brit Awards, Young received the award for Best British Male and still tours today. Also performing that night are the fabulous Gipsy Kings Tribute band, Oneida James Band from the USA, Footwork Dance Studios, David John performing his Rod Stewart tribute and to top off the evening’s entertainment, we have a fabulous and very special All Stars Band coming together from various famous bands Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, Suzi Quatro, Honeycombs and others.
