any of you will have heard of the TIE card (Tarjeta de Identidad de extranjero), whilst many of you won't have. Therefore I thought I would try and explain the importance of this new Residencia card.

Firstly, between now and the end of the transition period, the withdrawal agreement has cemented a number of points, including continued rights to healthcare and increases to the UK state pension, both of which remain unchanged for individuals who are legally resident here at the end of the transition period. Only 360,000 British nationals are currently registered in Spain, with a vast number in the process of obtaining Residencia. But I am not quite sure what will happen to those who do not choose to take official residency here in Spain after the end of year. For those of you who are already Resident, and have the green document or card, you need at this time to do nothing as these are acceptable documents and you are not required to change to a TIE at the moment. If you intend to remain living in Spain after December 31st, you will need to apply for the TIE card and before you can do that, you must be in possession of either private health insurance, paying into the Spanish health system or be a pensioner. To obtain your TIE, you can do this yourself but you must get an appointment, which I understand is in Alicante at the moment. However the process can be started online and if you have no health insurance, you must obtain this first and be in possession of a certificate, which the Police will require, and this is where my company can help you. You will need to ensure that the policy covers the full requirements for your application and the health insurance company we deal with, can provide the full cover that is necessary. There is no point in taking out cheap insurance, and expecting this to provide you with ongoing expensive treatment, because it will not. I understand there is no requirement to have a minimum cash amount in your bank account but you will need a minimum monthly income, and hopefully they will also consider the overall wealth of individuals. ¡ For further information or a quotation, please contact one of my offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit our website www.jennifercunningham.net

A Cometary Surprise

I

QF Focus Magazine August 2020

t's often a surprise how quickly things in astronomy can change. When I finished my scribblings last month, I knew what I was going to be saying this month. How wrong I was, the big news this month (July) is a rather wonderful comet in the night sky.

I should start by saying that comets are not at all rare, these things are passing through the inner solar system all the time. What is unusual, is for a comet to be bright enough to see easily, and to be so spectacular. So, just what is a comet? Actually, it's just a lump of dirt, ice and bits of rock, all stuck together by gravity over a very long time. What makes them special is the way they behave as they get near to the Sun. The heat and radiation boil off some of the ice etc leaving a stream of particles behind the comet. Next the solar wind hits these particles so we see a beautiful glowing tail. Naturally, that's a terrible simplification, but I'm sure you get the idea. There are other strange things for a newcomer to comets:- as it approaches the Sun, the tail is behind the comet, as you would expect. After it has gone around, the solar wind is pushing the particles away, so it looks like it's going tail first. Odd if you're not used to the idea. This latest comet is called Neowise, named after the new (neo) Wide Field Infrared Survey, an asteroid hunting project. Fortunately for us amateur astronomers, Neowise is easy to find in the night sky. It's just under the constellation called The Plough, unfortunately, by the time you read this it will have gone away on its journey through space. I'm mentioning it now because quite a few readers have been following me and using binoculars to explore the heavens, and a comet like Neowise is absolutely superb when seen like that. If you missed it, I'm sorry, but you'll have to wait 6,800 years for it to come back again. At least you can see a smashing picture taken by my friend Paul from the astro group. Fortunately, comets worth seeing do come by from time to time, usually at very short notice and if you see one mentioned in the press, make every effort to get those binoculars out and have a look. Also in August, Saturn and Jupiter are easy to find, they're quite close together in the south after sunset, very bright and east to spot. There is a new moon towards the end of the month, the 23rd to 25th of the month will be the best time to have a look, sunlight will be coming from an angle making it easier to see the craters and mountains. Next month I should be back on track so another look at Saturn, so easy to see in the autumn night sky, and a possible change in the nature of the universe.

Summer seems to have finally arrived with an influx of tourists up and down the coast. We recently had the pleasure of dog sitting for friends in Calpe for a few days, which was a lovely break from the norm and very relaxing. We didn't go out much at all, only to the supermarket but the streets in Calpe were jam packed and so much activity happening. This now seems to be travelling further south to our own area, as when I'm out and about on my travels there are certainly more cars on the road and parking is more difficult‌. which is generally a giveaway. Now that we are back to almost normal maybe it is time to get those appointments booked at the medical centres that were missed during lockdown, it is important that we all keep our well being and health in tip top shape, probably more so now than ever. The matriculation for the school went without any hiccups this year, in fact it was a lot easier than usual with a lot being done online, followed by a quick visit to the school by an appointment system. Maybe this will be the new system for years to come, it was definitely better organised than in previous years. Now we just have to sit back and wait for them to announce what the new measures will be on the return to school in September... presuming that is going to happen. Stay safe until next time. Congratulations to Alan Foster from Rojales who won last month's competition after spotting the Curry On Cooking logo on page 25. This month if you find the Curry on Cooking logo (not on this page, front page or the recipe page) you are in with a chance of winning a selection of curry kits which will be posted out to your house. Simply email editor@femalefocusonline.com with your name, address, phone number and the page you found the logo on. See inside for full competition details. Good luck. helle

Ciudad Patricia - Open for personal tours By Amanda Hobbs - Sales Advisor - Ciudad Patricia

P

eople who decide to come and live at Ciudad Patricia mainly consider 3 things: not feeling lonely in their senior years, coping with a large villa and garden becomes more and more difficult and of course, the health safety net. Now the current global health situation has made a lot of people think about their living arrangements, especially the more seniors amongst us. These things are all taken care of, plus other facilities, to give you peace of mind. People living here say that they felt ’safe’ during lockdown, secure in the knowledge that a team of people, including the on-site Doctor, were looking out for them and taking every step possible to keep them safe. Since lockdown has been eased, they are able socialise in the Ciudad Patricia ‘bubble’, adding to a sense of staying safe. Residents are starting once again to socialise in safety with lunches with music, paella day with flamenco show and live music (including an Elvis tribute) to name but a few. People are asking us if they can visit to take a look at their options for moving to Ciudad Patricia and I’d like to re-assure everyone that we have taken extensive measures and introduced new protocols to do everything we can for a safe visit. We have hand sanitisers throughout the building, we insist on masks and physical distancing, we meet outside on our lovely terrace, and more. If you’re thinking it’s time to take a look at easier senior living with peace of mind, then call me to arrange your own personalised tour and find out for yourself why so many residents say how glad they are to be living here. · Amanda Hobbs, Sales Advisor, Ciudad Patricia, +34 673 064 288, ahobbs@ciudadpatricia.com. Checklist: the most common paperwork pack to sell a property The most common paperwork pack to sell a property in Spain is - Latest Water Bill. - Latest Electricity Bill. - Latest council tax (SUMA bill). - EPC Energy Performance Certificate. Required in all cases except for detached properties of under 50 square metres. - Habitation Licence. Currently, the submission (registration receipt) of having applied for a Habitation License (not the license itself), is required to sign for a property sale at any Notary within Alicante. Requirements and the amount of Registration Tax necessary for the certificate vary greatly between the different municipalities. -Certificate of Antiquity / Retrospective Licence. This is required whenever the property has been extended, altered or had a pool built without a proper building licence. By having a Retrospective Licence / Antiquity Certificate, building works become non objectionable and vendors use it to avoid putting off potential buyers, due to the existence of undeclared or unlicensed building work. The Antiquity Certificate is also the document needed at the Notary to update the Title Deeds (Escritura) with any alterations made to the property. Martinez de la Casa Architects is one of the most prominent and respectable practices in the area, providing all types of Certificates and Licenses, amongst other services. One in four cancer patients treated with immunotherapy has a more effective and less toxic progress

O

ne in four cancer patients who undergo immunotherapy treatment has a more effective and less toxic progress, and continues to have a good outcome years after going into remission, as stated by Dr. Antonio Brugarolas, head of Cancer Platform at Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja. Clinical studies conducted over the past five years have shown the significant effect of immunotherapy on the survival of cancer patients and it is transforming the lives of many patients while opening the door to further research. As for which type of cancer immunotherapy can be applied to, Dr. Joseba Rebollo a specialist from Cancer Platform at Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja, explains that, although it can be applied to all types of tumours, it is head and neck, lung, bladder, kidney, breast, melanoma, skin cancer, liver cancer, lymphomas or leukaemia that are showing the best outcomes in the studies. “This benefit,” points out Dr. Rebollo, “has been observed in the metastatic stage and in many cases also in the early stage of these tumours, which has led to a high expectation that it can be introduced in earlier stages of the disease and increase the chances of cure.” How does immunotherapy work? Drugs used in immunotherapy are administered intravenously over repeated sessions every two or three weeks. “These drugs,” says Dr. Brugarolas, “are responsible for generating an immune system reaction against tumours leading to the destruction of tumours, this reaction does not occur naturally in cancer patients because the tumour prevents it.” In addition to the immunotherapy drugs marketed by the industry, new specific immunotherapy treatments are being developed that use cells from the patient's own immune system to fight cancer.

Dr. Juan José Mata, immunology specialist and head of the cancer cell immunotherapy programmes at Quirónsalud Torrevieja explains that, “the patient's immune system cells can be isolated and processed ex-vivo, in specialised facilities called Clean Rooms to identify and specifically eliminate each patient's tumour cells.” As for the side effects of immunotherapy, it does not cause hair loss or develop sores, although it can sometimes cause an autoimmune disease syndrome. The clinical manifestations are easy to identify and treat, and generally immune treatments must be discontinued. “However, cellular treatments are significantly more complex and often produce an acute and rapid fever, lung or neurological condition due to a massive release of immunological substances,” adds Rebollo, “which require urgent specialised treatments.” While immunotherapy is not the definitive solution against cancer, nor has it been proven that it can cure if administered on a standalone basis”, says the head of the Cancer Platform at Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja, “it does increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy, certainly helps to cure many cancers and undoubtedly improves the quality of life of patients. What is truly essential is to have a multidisciplinary approach in cancer treatments and to understand that a single speciality does not cover the entire procedure, instead different departments must work with a patient simultaneously and permanently, collaborating with each other.”

Microblading and Permanent Make-Up Microblading

Microblading is a form of permanent make up, using a handheld tool to implant pigment into the skin. Indian Shakshuka

Shakshuka is cooked and eaten around the world in many shapes and sizes, served in the pan, with fresh bread. It’s basically eggs gently poached in a lush, spicy tomato sauce. Traditionally the sauce is made up of bell peppers, tomatoes, onion, garlic and spices with eggs on top. This is an easy dish to rustle up and serves two for breakfast or a light brunch. This recipe is adaptable; add chickpeas, spinach, sausage, top with cheese and herbs. We’ve opted for aubergines; as they lend a silky richness to the dish. Ingredients • 1 small aubergine optional • 2 tablespoons oil • 1 large onion diced • 1 garlic minced • 1 red pepper chopped • 1 tin chopped tomatoes • 1 teaspoon cumin • 1 teaspoon ground pepper • 1 teaspoon paprika

• 1 teaspoon garam masala • ½ teaspoon salt • 2 chillies chopped optional • 4 large eggs The spices can be easily replaced with a Curry On Cooking kit Prep 25 mins, Cook 20 mins, Serves 2 Method Cut the aubergine (optional) into ½ cm-thick rounds. In a warm frying pan, dry fry the slices on both sides until cooked. Set aside.

In a large frying pan heat the oil to a medium-high heat. Add the onions and cook for 3-4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the peppers, chopped tomatoes and mix well and then tip in all the spices. Bring to the boil, add the aubergine slices. Simmer for 5 minutes until the aubergine slices slightly disintegrate and the sauce thickens. Make 4 wells for the eggs, crack an egg directly into each well. Cover the pan with a lid. As soon as the egg whites turn white they are done. Cook a bit longer if set yolks are preferred. Take off the heat and serve immediately with bread, chapatti, naan or pitta. Tips. Top with fresh parsley or coriander, feta or paneer. Sprinkle with chilli flakes for a spicier kick! LOOKING FOR A GIFT with a difference or to learn a new skill? A View From The Top

over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. Heat not so glorious Heat.

Now I know that it is August and I also know that here in Southern Spain in summer it is hot. Considering I have lived here on a permanent basis for the last twenty odd years, you would be right in thinking that after all those years I would have some how become acclimatised and learned to cope with the long hot days and nights of a Spanish summer. When we first moved here I loved the long hot summers and the oh so warm evenings... Now, I suppose due to the passage of time and the body losing some of its get up and go... I find that during summer my get up and go definitely seems to have got up and went. My latest tactic is to get up earlyish before the sun has had time to get high in the sky. As I write this, for example, I was up before 7.30am and out sitting on our front porch overlooking the street with a cup of tea and my usual slice of toast with olive oil. Alongside me was my mate Fonzie our Irish Terrier. I was enjoying the sounds of Benijófar on a early cool overcast morning. The local church bell was tolling the quarter hours...the local chickens were Cocka-doodle-doing the new day, and the hum of air conditioning units could be heard underlying the start of the day for us Benijóferos. It is a Sunday so the village is coming to life slower than it does on a weekday and the car traffic is much reduced. It's nice to sit outside and just watch and listen to the world around you wake up. The golondrinas (swifts) are starting to chirrup and also starting to display their amazing power of flight... little spitfires every one of them as they swoop, turn and generally dart about the sky. Their summer here will soon be at an end... it is one of the high spots of my year... the arrival and the subsequent departure of the summer swifts. I remember watching in amazement many, many years ago when I was working in the Middle East, the spectacle of the migrating swifts swooping and diving before flying over our outdoor swimming pool, low and fast in an attempt to fill up with water on the wing to enable them to refresh whilst on the oh so long migratory journey. As I watch and listen to the town awaken my mate Fonzie is having a breakfast biscuit and, not content with that, is now staring at my slice of toast with olive oil. Of course I always tell him to go away and no you are not having any of my

Keep yourself Positive. Like many of you I have spent what seems like an eternity seemingly hanging around in the house. In fact once the lockdown was relaxed it took me some time to regain any desire to leave the house... FOGO had struck.. Fear of going out. In normal times I am a reflective thoughtful person... that said I do on occasion hover in between the optimistic / pessimistic corridor, in that I cannot seem to manage the reality of what is going on, as against the actuality of personnel experience. During a Pandemic lockdown, the confinement element can make simply living our lives a more than normal stressful event. The rhythm of life will likely be disrupted, and it is important that you as an individual work hard to rationalise and quantify your daily life experience. Keep in touch with other people...if you can talk over the balcony or even through the door then do it... the internet is ideal in terms of distance communication, as is the telephone and social media. Re-vamp your daily routines... do not sit around in your pyjamas all day... get up, wash and get ready to go in a mental sense. Experiment with your diet... read books that have a learning content rather than comfort reading... try indoor gardening or pot or container growing. Self reflection and self compassion are a mental must. Each day reflect on your days achievements... what went well and what could have been improved... make a note in a diary and compare achievements over past days. Finally do not get too involved in the main stream media. By all means watch television, but be prepared to approach media coverage with a clear open and positive mind set. As things move on and hopefully things in Covid 19 terms improve, it is important to work on keeping one's mental acuity in tip top condition... the future is still some way short of being predictable... with a positive and safety conscious mindset we/ you/ us will once more see a healthy productive future for both ourselves and our families. Keep safe and keep mentally and physically well. Something Wise about Historians. During these troubled times I have been in contact, from the house, with some close friends and family members. During conversations over social media a couple of statements have made me "sit up and take notice"...I thought I would share these two gems with you Dear Reader.. both are comments made by a great friend and by a family member ...my daughter. Both people have a love of history and a wisdom that is a joy to behold. In response to my question about "English Exceptionalism" my great friend Rob Shepherd answered..."It seems to me that the English of today have all the worst bits of the Pagans, Celts, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans and have by some miracle managed to avoid any of the good bits of any of them." That is why so many English people still want to fight and take over the World because they still think they should own the World.. and as none of them can go abroad at the moment they might as well just fight amongst themselves. The second gem comes from my History Master Daughter... Merry who in answer to my question about why history is so captivating answered: "We are only separated from History by time." The space, she says "Remains the Same".

Can you really make a difference?

I

have been motivated and inspired through my life by people who have made a difference to their lives, and their inspiration has affected my life and others included! How determined some of us are to get the best out of life, on the other hand some of us settle for less, and yet others never seem to care what makes up their day! I often wonder why some of us get out of bed, but then again… Maybe some of us don’t! I guess it is evident from the time we get up in the morning just how motivated some of us are, what have we have planned for the day ahead, or are we just happy (?) to drift from one day to another, never venturing to the left or the right, quite content never to achieve anything in life. Some of the most amazing people were very poor, materially, from very humble backgrounds, yet their fame and achievements have lasted for centuries. So, if origin or background has nothing to do with achievement and success for the majority, what does? The inner desire and determination to achieve success is the motivation, it gets them going and keeps them going! You can do almost anything you want to if you want to badly enough! No matter what the obstacles are that lie in your way, there are ways to achieve most of the things you are determined to do. I wonder how many of us have put that to the test? Like yourself enough to believe in yourself and to at least accept the challenge and try to make a difference in whichever way you want, only you know what that really is. We only get results according to the way we are dealing with things, events, people, whatever life throws at us. Even a simple thing like smiling more opens many more doors – try it! Look for opportunities, think how everything you are unhappy about could be better, and work towards making that change. Life can be so fulfilling. We all have the same 24 hours a day, the difference is how we spend that time. Make a difference, believe you can, change things you are not happy about but don’t just think about it… Do it NOW! Working in a busy salon means we receive many people all year round wanting their hair coloured, cut, treated for hair loss, for extra hydration...etc. But not many people understand the importance of having to keep their hair protected from the sun, sea and chlorine to PREVENT the damage rather than having to fix damaged hair, which is a much higher cost in the long run. Here are a few tips and must use products to keep your hair protected and hydrated this summer! • Keep hair away from chlorine as much as possible as the chemicals will completely dry your hair out and remove any colour you have in your hair. • If you do, make sure you wash your hair immediately with a hair salon shampoo that removes these chemicals, and I promise you will notice the difference. • Use either a leave in conditioner or a UV filtered protection spray to keep adding moisture back in to your hair whilst at the beach or pool. Your hair stylist can recommend you the best! • Keep your hair covered as much as possible when in the sun. There are many fashionable items in the shops like scarves and hats that will look amazing on you. • Visit your hair salon at least twice a month for a deep conditioning treatment and blow dry to prevent, or stop in time any damage caused by the sun. These tips will definitely keep your hair completely protected and hydrated for these hot summer months here on the Costa Blanca. If you would like more information on how to protect or treat your hair don't hesitate to contact us. · For more information or an appointment please contact us Máximo Beauty - telephone: 96 572 4671 or visit the salon at

Book Review by Ivor Kindle Title: Ship of Rome Author: John Stack Publisher: Harper

T

he time is around 200BC. The Punic wars between Carthage and Rome are in full swing. Captain Atticus Perennis commands a Roman Trireme warship the Aquila (eagle) where he is joined in command by Septimus Capito, who is one of Rome's 1st Marine Centurions. At this time the Punic navy is far superior to the fledgling Roman navy and decides to seize control of the island of Sicily under the command of the Punic Admiral Gisco. The storyline follows the political battles within the Roman Senate as Senators Scipio and Duilius battle for political power and command of the New Roman navy. This book is a delight in that it brings the reader up to speed on ancient naval tactics and types of ancient naval warships. The Ship of Rome is the first in a John Stack trilogy with Atticus Perennis as the main character. A really good read.

Keep reading, Ivor Kindle.

Bio Energiser D-tox-spa For the month of August I am offering 25% off my D-tox treatment.

The D-tox treatment is a great treatment on its own, but I also use it with other treatments. It is really good for swollen legs and ankles and it helps the lymphatic system. Our body is a very complex piece of engineering made up of cells and tissue. When our body is well balanced our body functions by removing toxins from the body and absorbs nutrients from water food and air. When the body experiences any form of trauma like an injury or ill health, the cells in the body become more positively charged, so they don’t work as effectively and store toxins. The Bio Energiser D-tox starts the process of re-balancing our bodies with negative and positive ions. This will extract nutrients and dispose of unwanted waste. The result will be renewed energy levels both mentally and physically with a great feeling of well being. You have too many outstanding things, prioritise and get them done and you can then really relax and enjoy the summer. Just be honest with them, and yourself, and everyone will have a greater respect for you. Make sure you have some down time this month. After 12 years of publication, the Diary is still going strong. Despite several months of lockdown, most of our stalwart entertainers are now dusting themselves down and ‘Once more, stepping unto the breach’. Unfortunately, a few groups have gone to the wall, whilst others are taking a breather and will be re-launching their talents during 2021. So please support your local group when and where you get the opportunity. Don´t forget, all groups in this column are non-profit making and donate all proceeds to local charities. Cantabile Ladies Choir: The choir are still deciding when rehearsals for the autumn/winter concerts will commence. Further details will be announced next month. In the meantime, new members are always welcome, the only requirement is the ability to sing in tune in this friendly, three-part female choir. Contact: valbeange@gmail.com or valcantabie@gmail.com. Phone: 966 795 816. Mobile: 648 034 232. Rehearsals usually take place in La Siesta Church, Torrevieja, Fridays 14:45 - 17:00 from September to May. s I have repeatedly said, local amdram and virtually the entire cultural music and drama scene has been decimated by recent events. Lights have gone out in theatres, village halls and entertainment centres all over the world, orchestras have abandoned their instruments, and vocal performers have been left frustrated and waiting in the wings. One local example is the muchacclaimed four-part harmony group, Lyrical, whose inaugural performances on the Orihuela-Costa last year went down a storm with the concert-going public. We contacted Lyrical Chairman Trent Harris and asked how lockdown had affected their forward planning and above all, group morale. He assured us that although social distancing during the last four months had cancelled out all normal rehearsals, morale within the group was extremely positive with everyone straining-at-the-leash to get back together again. Staying in the positive vein, he added that they were hoping to begin rehearsals in early September with the aim to stage their popular Christmas show at La Zenia church in December. Not alone with his aspirations, we understand that Lyrical Musical Director Philip Mitchell, has made the most of his lockdown period by producing a new magical programme for this musical re-launch. Considering we have lost several local groups during this epidemic and many others struggling to survive, it was a breath of fresh air to be able to record this incredibly positive attitude to their musical future. Carry on Lyrical!

Lyrical Mixed Voice Choir: Rehearsals will resume on Wednesday mornings in La Zenia church early September (exact date to be confirmed), New singers are always welcome. An ability to hold your own tune in 4-part harmony and to read music a distinct advantage. Rojales Pantomime Group: Do you want to be pirates in pantomime? Oh yes you do! The group are looking forward to starting rehearsals for ‘Treasure Island’ so you can join Long John Silver, his trusty old bird Polly and his pirate crew on the Hispaniola in their hilarious bid to find treasure. There will be laughs galore along the way in January 2021. They are all looking forward to it. Why not join the crew? Contact; rojalespantomime@gmail.com. Studio 32: The group will be performing ‘South Pacific’ at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre, San Fulgencio from Wednesday 17 to Saturday 20 March 2021, providing all goes well with the COVID-19 restrictions. Rehearsals are scheduled to recommence in September. Look out for future press release for updates. The Dayamante Singers: The Singers were formed 10 years ago and, subject to current restrictions, expect to re-commence rehearsals next month in Daya Nueva starting on Wednesdays from 11.00 until 12.30. They are a group of men and women who enjoy singing a variety of songs from the 60s to the present time and are always looking for new members. If you would like to join and have a great social time, ring Jean: 690 778 091.

If you would like your group to be part of the Stage Diary please email editor@femalefocusonline.com. Deadline for copy is the 17th of the month prior to publication. Stage Diary Costa Blanca North information can be found online at www.femalefocusonline.com

www.femalefocusonline.com Page 24 strength,” says Scott McDougall, co-founder of The Independent Pharmacy (theindependentpharmacy.co.uk). Swimming utilises nearly all muscles in the body, including often under-worked areas of your arms. Not only does it engage your legs, which need to kick to propel you forward, it also recruits your core strength, and the lats, deltoids and traps. “Swimming is unique, as alternating between different strokes lets you target specific muscle groups with your swimming workout,” adds McDougall. Think of the water like your own personal gym. Unlike other popular forms of exercise like running and cycling, where there’s little variety, with swimming you can potentially pick different strokes to influence the intensity and focus of your sessions.

5 health benefits of swimming – for body and mind By Liz Connor, PA

1. It’s low-impact on your joints Experts recommend 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, and swimming is a great all-rounder with multiple health benefits – no matter your age, physical ability or fitness level. “It’s particularly helpful if you experience joint pain in your knees,” says LloydsPharmacy pharmacist Anshu Kaura (lloydspharmacy. com). “The water supports your body, meaning there is less impact on the skeletal system, including joints. Gentle swimming or water aerobics can also help strengthen muscles around your joints, reducing the impact of aches and pains over time.” Kaura adds that not only is swimming a great low-impact option, but strengthening your muscles can help reduce the degenerative impact of joint pain in the future. “Warm pools are particularly beneficial,” she adds, “as the heat can help loosen stiff joints, supporting flexibility.” 2. It’s a whole-body workout There’s a reason many fit and healthy people get out of breath after just a couple of laps in the pool. “It’s basically an all-round form of exercise, which keeps your heart rate up, improves cardiovascular fitness, as well as building endurance and muscle

3. There are mental benefits too We all know exercise-induced endorphins can help blitz away stress, but simply being in the water can have its own restorative benefits. A recent YouGov poll commissioned by Swim England found almost half a million British adults with mental health problems reduced their visits to their GP or therapist as a result of regular swimming.

O

ften described as an ultimate full-body workout and brilliantly accessible, swimming has a lot to offer. Liz Connor finds out more. If you’re looking for a way to supercharge your fitness after months of repetitive jogging and living-room workouts, then now is the time to take the plunge. Swimming is an all-body workout that can leave you not just physically stronger but mentally recharged too; experts say it can soothe stress, boost physical endurance and burn serious calories. Not convinced yet? Here are just some of the brilliant benefits of swimming…

When asked about the impact of swimming on their day-to-day life, 43% of regular swimmers in the survey said it makes them feel happier, while 26% feel more motivated to complete tasks, and 15% believe life feels more manageable. It’s thought that being in water can help ease sensory overload on our nervous system, helping to promote feelings of calm and relaxation, according to a study published in the Journal of Pain Research last year. 4. It supports weight management “Swimming can help you to maintain a healthy weight, or lose weight as part of a wider plan,” says McDougall. “In fact, you can expect to burn around 200-400 calories per half-hour of swimming, depending on your speed, stroke and weight.” Butterfly is probably the hardest stroke to learn, but is said to be highly effective (although not always popular with other pool users due to the splashing!). If you’re new to swimming, it’s a good idea to start off small and build up your swimming levels at a pace that works for you. Even 15-minute sessions of gentle breaststroke can have benefits. If you’re not confident with your stroke, try some adult swim lessons. 5. It’s good for all ages One of the best things about swimming is that anyone can reap the benefits – and you can keep it up at any age. Unlike many trendy HIIT workouts that are popular at boutique gyms right now, swimming feels more inclusive to all ages and fitness levels, and you don’t have to be an amateur athlete to enjoy it. “The bottom line is that regular swimming is great for everyone; studies have found it can help you lead a healthier, longer life and reduce your risk of developing many major health conditions, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes,” says McDougall. “It’s very good for those who aren’t particularly active, have injuries or are a bit older. So whatever your fitness level, age or ability, it’s an accessible way to keep fit.”
