What a dreadful time parts of the UK are experiencing with flood waters. How irritating it must be for Boris and all those politicians electioneering, as I am sure there are many more interested in trying to recover from the weather. Of those people who have been flooded, who of course are very distressed, there are many who will have no insurance cover at present and those with insurance who will never get cover for flooding again. Spain has just come through very bad weather in our area, with over 60,000 claims so far with an estimated total cost of over â‚Ź400 million. I often mention how impressed I am with the Spanish regarding disasters as the system is so simple, where a percentage of your premium is paid to the government Consortio. This means you will always have guaranteed cover. Obviously you will only get the amount that you are insured for and you will not get it on your car if it is English plated, and they will not be able to contact you if you do not have a Spanish telephone number. However, as long you solve these issues, this means you never have to worry about not having flooding covered in the future, as this cover is guaranteed by the Consortio as part of your policy. Just make sure you have the correct house insurance and do not just base it on price, as you never know what is round the corner. I had no intention of mentioning Brexit. However, there are already a few changes in my world. One of them is the necessity of being in possession of a Green Card for Spanish vehicles travelling to the UK, and UK plated vehicles will need this card for travelling in Europe. All my offices can provide your Green Card and remember they are only valid for one year. Should you require any further information or a quotation, please contact one of my offices or visit my website www.jennifercunningham.net. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and hopefully a very safe one.

Every year I feel the same when it comes to writing my comments for the December issue...where has this year gone? And every year it seems to go by quicker and quicker. Is this something that just happens the older we get or is it that the time passes by faster the busier you are? Maybe a bit of both. For all my intentions were good in preparing for Christmas early, I'm actually no further forward than I was a month ago, but I am determined to change that within the next week otherwise I will still be shopping for presents on Christmas Eve. All year I find food shopping a huge chore however Christmas is the one time of year that I actually enjoy it. Why do the supermarkets only stock these speciality items in December and not all year round? Although it would cost me a fortune if they did as I wouldn't be able to resist. The last couple of years we have purchased a real Christmas tree and I would love to do the same again this year, however due to us now having our pups I don't think it would be a very wise move. The fact that there will be a tree in our house (artificial or not) will no doubt bring about a lot of barking. Anything unusual that appears, no matter how big or small, is seen as a threat to them both so it will be interesting and funny, to see what their reaction will be. From all at Female Focus publications we wish all our readers, contributors and advertisers a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year and thank you once again for your continued support. Congratulations to Janet Hammond from Orihuela Costa who won last month's 50â‚Ź competition after spotting the logo on page 7. See if you can spot the logo in this issue for a chance to win 50â‚Ź, see inside for details of how to enter. Good luck!

Antiquity Certificate / Retrospective Licence An individual denounces 300 illegal extensions to properties affecting 800 owners after being fined with 18,200€ for glazing in a patio with no licence. The Spanish news has reported on a scandal that happened in Salamanca, were a pensioner named Tristan glazed in his patio to extend his property by 18sqm. He was denounced and fined 18,200€ by the Town Hall for not having a licence. After the fine was notified, the gentleman was so upset that he made the decision to walk around the streets denouncing randomly all enclosed terraces, porches and extensions he could see. Finally, the national news reported he had denounced 300 properties with over 800 owners affected. The Town Hall is enforced by law to take action and fine after a denuncia has been made and as a result of Tristan’s massive denouncing process, an everlasting queue of denounced owners has caused the planning department of the Town Hall to collapse and it has become a politic issue in the city. However, the Spanish planning system allows owners to retrospectively obtain a certificate to avoid being fined. Whenever the property has been extended, altered or had a pool built without a proper building licence, by having a Retrospective Licence/Antiquity Certificate building works already carried out become unobjectionable and they can no longer be fined. The Antiquity Certificate/Retrospective Licence is also the document needed at the Notary to update the Title Deeds (Escritura) with any alterations introduced to the property and vendors use it to avoid putting off potential buyers, due to the existence of undeclared or unlicensed building work. The requirements to obtain a Retrospective Licence for any alterations, extensions or pools are as follows: ·Murcia: The extension or pool needs to be over four years old. ·Almeria: The extension or pool needs to be over six years old. ·Alicante: The extension or pool needs to be over four years old, before the 20th August of 2014 (minimum 9 years). Martinez de la Casa Architects is one of the most prominent and respectable practices in the area, providing all types of Certificates and Licences, amongst other services. We are the Number 1 company in EPC Certificates (121€ inc IVA) and Number 1 for Antiquity Certificates (pools 229€ inc IVA, extensions 326€ inc IVA) and Habitation Licences (from 118€ inc IVA, Town Hall tax not included, depending on each municipality). Do you have your RESIDENCIA? Time is running out! Sun Lawyers are the people to go to if you are looking to become a Spanish resident, especially with Brexit looming. It may seem daunting, but it is straight-forward and Sun Lawyers will do virtually all the work for you to give you peace of mind, and all the correct documents to enjoy your time in Spain. You should apply for a Spanish residency card if: • You’ve spent more than 90 days in Spain. • You want to be legal in Spain. • You want to be eligible for the Spanish healthcare system. Let's examine those three points in more detail. You're staying in Spain for over 90 days The law clearly states that if you spend more than 90 days in a 180 day period in Spain (or any other country in the Schengen area), then you must apply for a residency card, which in effect is a stay permit. If you are from the UK, the Brexit issue is clouding the waters, but essentially you have to get yourself covered with a residencia, pure and simple, and we at Sun Lawyers can get that sorted for you and your partner and family. The proposed UK-EU withdrawal agreement allows residencias to continue, but they will then be swapped over to a different card, which the Spanish government said earlier this year would be a straight-forward process. That looks like being the case as well in a no-deal Brexit scenario according to Madrid, but you must get a residencia right now, and time is ticking by quickly.

As an example, an EU person that is residing in Spain, once you have obtained your Spanish residency card, you then you have a period to switch your EU licence for a Spanish driving licence. You want to use the Spanish healthcare system Essentially there are two main categories here: 1. Limited and temporary healthcare in Spain. At present, this must be done through the EHIC health card, but this does not include ongoing treatments and, currently, no bilateral agreement has been signed to continue with this for UK citizens once the UK leaves the EU. 2. Permanent all-inclusive healthcare in Spain. Right now, state pensioners from other EU member states can transfer their rights to health care from their country of origin with the S1, E121 & E106. In the future, we will see if it is still the case for UK citizens, depending on negotiations between UK and Spain. Ready to act?

You want to be legal in Spain

It is common for people to postpone important decisions, like the need to apply for Spanish residency, but it is imperative that you get started right now! Get in touch with the English-speaking Sun Lawyers team to apply for your Spanish residency, as it is much easier with the right advice and experts behind you.

This is a simple matter of “peace of mind”, as doing everything according to Spanish rules can only bring benefits, and Sun Lawyers have the expertise to tell you what's what!

If you have any questions, then please send an email to admin@sun-lawyers.com or call on the office & ask for the Relocation Department on +34 96 532 1193.

Coffee break with Kate…. What is your business and when did you establish? My business is ‘The Agency La Marina’ on La Marina urbanisation specialising in holiday rentals, long term rentals and sales. We opened our doors in February 2019 just 10 short months ago. What brings you to living and opening a business here in Spain? Every aspect of the Spanish life brings me to working in Spain… the food, the culture, the people and especially the sun. Opening a business here is a little scary but with good determination and a great team it was a breeze. How do you help expats as a business? As well as sales and rentals we offer free services such as translation, Spanish form completion, printing, online check in and boarding cards for flights, helping fill in NIE, Residencia or other documents etc. We have built up a strong clientele by offering free services with a smile and these clients always return. What’s your latest offer? As you will see by our advert below we are offering a flat fee to sell your property. Most agents charge a 3.000€ minimum and 3 or 4% after that, we are offering all December clients to list for free and if we sell we just take a flat fee of just 3,000€. We want to offer to sell for a low flat fee as we have clients wanting to purchase, but as a new company we don’t have a huge amount of properties for sale. What do you see for ‘The Agency’ in 2020? We would like to expand our property portfolio for sales and work hard to achieve great results for our clients. We already have 62 holiday rentals on our books and are only taking a maximum of 70 properties but at 60% occupancy already for 2020 we aim for every property to be completely booked. How can people contact you? They can call into our office on Calle Madrid La Marina Urbanisation just to the right of Dial Prix. Our office is open 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday. Quirónsalud Alicante launches a Diabetes Unit The incidence of the disease has doubled in the past fifteen years. Quirónsalud Alicante has launched a new unit, specialising in the treatment of diabetes and its associated illnesses. This multidisciplinary unit is made up of a multidisciplinary team, coordinated by the Endocrinology Service, which includes medical professionals from the fields of endocrinology, angiology and cardiology, as well as nursing professionals, in order to support diabetic patients so that they can maintain an exhaustive control of their disease. Diabetes mellitus is caused when the body cannot produce enough insulin, or does not use it efficiently. The two most common types of diabetes mellitus are type-1 diabetes mellitus, which mainly presents in childhood or youth, and is due to the destruction of the pancreas by an autoimmune process, due to which the pancreas does not produce insulin, and patients’ bodies need to be given insulin by injection and "type-2 diabetes mellitus". This second type of diabetes, more common than the first type, explains Doctor Ángel Luis Abad, Endocrinologist and Coordinator of the Diabetes Unit at Quirónsalud Alicante, “usually presents after forty-five years of age, and is due to the fact that the body becomes resistant to the action of insulin, and can’t use it in an adequate manner. Its origin is often related with excess weight and obesity, a lack of exercise and inadequate nutrition”. The increase of excess weight and obesity in Spain has doubled the number of type-2 diabetes in the past 15 years and, as Doctor Carlos Sala, Head of the Obesity and Nutrition Unit at Quirónsalud Alicante and Valencia states, “it already affects 15% of the population, and its relation with obesity is so strong that it has led to the rise of a new term: diaglobesity”. One of the negative consequences of this disease is that, often, it does not have any symptoms when it starts. “This leads to a late diagnosis of the disease, after it has affected different organs, and developed neurological or cardiovascular complications, or kidney diseases. That is why it’s important to find a team specialised in its treatment at the appearance of the first symptoms, so the disease can be treated in a holistic manner,” explains the specialist. In order to prevent it, Doctor Abad recommends giving up poor eating habits and returning to a Mediterranean diet, based on an abundant consumption of fruits, vegetables, white meats, fatty fish and olive oil, all accompanied by daily physical exercise. Metabolic Surgery, a New Path for the Treatment of Diabetes and Obesity Metabolic surgery for weight loss has been, to this date, the surgical technique of choice for the treatment of patients with a body-mass index (BMI) above 35, if the patient presents comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, etc. However, “due to the extraordinary results of this technique and the worldwide diabetes and obesity epidemic, which is starting to be called diaglobesity, it has started being used, with great success, to treat diabetic patient or patients with type-I obesity, in other words, patients that are not yet morbidly obese, but are diabetic,” says Doctor Carlos Sala. As for the benefits of this intervention, “90% of the patients intervened have been able to stop insulin injections, and the rest are able to control the disease with the help of medications. Additionally, this surgery helps patients lose a large amount of weight and reach an optimal weight, as long as they incorporate healthy habits and exercise in their daily routines. Many studies have proven that these measures achieve, in addition to an improved quality of life, an increase of ten years in the average life span of an obese person”. Practical Amateur Astronomy Using Binoculars There is a commonly held belief that Amateur astronomers all have a large telescope sitting in the garden with all the technical gubbins that go along with it. While that's true of some of us, most amateurs use either a portable telescope, which these days massively out perform a bulky model from 30 years ago, or very commonly, just use a chair and a pair of binoculars. Why a chair? That's because you need to be comfortable. Holding a pair of binoculars for any amount of time will tire your arms and you won't be able to hold them steady, then you will get disillusioned and give up. Don't worry whether your binoculars are purpose made for astronomy, whatever you have will make a huge difference to what you see, a pair of normal 10 x 50s will help you identify features on the Moon, reveal thousands of stars in a cluster and unravel the amazing Milky Way. So, you've decided to give this a try, you need to do just a little preparation before you start. Just going outside and looking up will leave you confused about just what you are looking at so it's a good idea to have one or two things in mind that you are going to see. Obviously the Moon is a great place to start, so look at a few simple maps first, just pick a few large features then find them for yourself. You've just become an amateur astronomer, welcome to the club. Of course the Moon isn't always visible so having something else to look for is a good idea. If you're reading this in December you will have a chance to look at a constellation (pattern of stars) called Orion. It rises in the south east around 10pm and will rise earlier and earlier as we go through winter. There is a picture of Orion alongside this article, and it's very distinctive and easy to find. Don't be surprised if it looks to be on its side a bit. Again, have a look at a picture first, either in a book or online to help you pick out a few things to find. You will be able to see the Red Giant star Betelgeuse, a cloudy patch near the middle that is a gas cloud called a nebula, one day that will become a star. There's much more too. Orion is a bit of a treasure trove for astronomers so getting to know it is truly fascinating. Unlike the rest of the Universe, space here is limited so you will have to wait until next month for the second part of this series. I'll be talking some more about binoculars, and telling you how to find some more wonders of creation.

Hi All, This month, I'm delighted to feature an entertainer, who is both original and different. Hartley Hartley performs as the lovely and inimitable "Magenta Slipperz". But first, we'll start at the beginning of this unique entertainer's career. Thirty five years ago, as an eighteen year old, Hartley began his musical life, as a singer / guitarist front man, in a local pub band. Three of the band members were plumbers, so the group was aptly named "Rising Main". Some years (and many bands) later, came the complications of getting band members together, due to work and family commitments. This situation encouraged Hartley to become a solo artiste, singing and playing guitar, performing cover versions of well known songs, whilst simultaneously working for a local children's theatre group. They performed at local schools, music festivals and events, often creating their own shows. The Imajica theatre company is still going strong, to this day. Some time later, Hartley was approached by well known Burlesque and Cabaret performer, Briar Rouge. She asked him to complete a show for her, but he'd have to be dressed in drag. Hartley agreed to this offer - and Magenta Slipperz was "born". Magenta performs mainly as a vocalist, incorporating plenty of fun between songs.

QF Focus Magazine Taking inspiration from London Drag Troupe "Sink the Pink", Magenta took the conscious decision never to be rude to audiences, no swearing on stage, and no making jokes at people's expense ..... Just good, clean fun. Magenta Slipperz has a 6 hour repertoire of songs, from many varied genres of music including the Bay City Rollers, Darts, The Rolling Stones, Showaddywaddy, The Jackson's, Gilbert '0 Sullivan, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, ACDC and Cliff Richard, to name a few. Hartley Hartley also performs as himself. He has a full disco facility and can offer himself as a vocalist and also provide a disco, saving any venue the cost of hiring separately. Since arriving in Spain, he has performed at bars, fiestas, Oktoberfests, private parties and social group events. In conversation with him, I asked what lies ahead? Well, Hartley has already tapped into local councils, particularly Fiesta Events, having recently performed at Moraira Oktoberfest, doing 5 gigs in 3 days. On top of that, he's been asked to perform in two upcoming films. One a Gangster Thriller, the other a Biography. Magenta Slipperz on the Big screen? Watch this space. To book this seasoned, professional entertainer, or learn more about him check out @hartleyhartleymusic site on Facebook. And don't forget to check out the local press for upcoming appearances. All that's left for me to do is wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous New Year. Until January 2020.

Bye for now, D.P.

What are the health benefits of a Hot Stone Massage By Tifanie Wentzell

A hot stone massage is a type of massage therapy used to help you relax, ease tense muscles and damaged soft tissues throughout your body. During a hot stone massage, smooth, flat, heated stones are placed on specific parts of the body. The stones are usually made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat and may be placed along your spine, on your stomach, on your chest, on your face, or on your palms. The heated stones are held and massaged onto your body using Swedish massage technique such as long strokes, circular movements, tapping, and kneading. All massages generally fall under the alternative medicine umbrella which are becoming a popular complementary therapy for many conditions. There are many benefits of hot stone massage such as.... Helps relieve muscle tension and pain. Heat has long been used to ease muscle tension and pain and it helps increase blood flow to the affected area. It may also reduce muscle spasms and increase flexibility and range of motion. Promotes sleep. Research showed that back massage helped promote relaxation and sleep. May help relieve symptoms of autoimmune diseases. Hot stone massages may relieve painful conditions such as fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes widespread chronic pain. People with rheumatoid arthritis may benefit from a moderate pressure massage, such as hot stone massage. A study showed participants experienced less pain, greater grip strength, and a greater range of motion after one month of massage therapy. The bottom line. Studies show that a hot stone massage may be a helpful way to reduce stress anxiety, promote relaxation, and ease pain and muscle tension. SAMM Members Help Schools The money raised by SAMM members through their line dance routine at the Caldero Day fiesta in Los Alcazares was always going to be used to help the children affected by the recent, terrible Gota Fria. To benefit as many children as possible it was decided to spread the spending between four schools. SAMM arranged for books to be sent to Instituto De Educacion Secundaria Antonio Menarguez Costa, painting and drawing materials to be sent to CIEP Bienvenido Conejero Requiel, an amplifier system was delivered to CIEP Petra Sanchez Rollan and sports equipment to CIEP Al Kazar. These donations cost 800€ in total. The response from the schools was phenomenal, particularly, Al Kazar, as they had lost all of their sports equipment in the floods. For more information go to www.sailingmarmenor.com.

HELP VEGA BAJA - FLOOD VICTIM ADDITIONAL SUPPORT For many, the recent Gota Fria floods are becoming a distant memory as life returns to normal. For others, the devastation that they experienced will continue for many months to come. HELP Vega Baja (registered charity) have been working with various businesses to raise funds for those people affected and to date. President, Michele Masson, stated “the support from people in the community, both individuals and businesses, has been phenomenal. Our volunteers are now in the process of working with local people in the affected areas and town halls to identify where the greatest needs are. We have started visiting homes ourselves to see where our support is most needed. We would like to issue an appeal to anyone who is struggling as a result of the floods to please contact us on 96 672 3733 or alternatively, email to president@helpvegabaja.com. We will continue to provide updates on progress via the local press and social media. Please remember to check our website at www.helpvegabaja.com and the HELP Vega Baja Facebook page.

Las Salinas Freemasons present San Jose Obrero Orphanage with 1250€ clothing vouchers.

Eric Raddings, seen here presenting the vouchers to Director of the Orphanage, Vincente, said, “The San Jose Obrero Orphanage in Orihuela was one of the charities I nominated last year as Master of Las Salinas Lodge, and I had the pleasure to visit and see Vicente and his team at work in October. Vicente and his team directly care for and house 80 orphans of all nationalities from all over the Alicante region, on behalf of the Valencian government. They also provide and maintain 4 apartments, 3 in Orihuela the other in Alicante, each housing 4 young people making the transition from orphanage life to becoming self sufficient in the outside world.

On site they run the local school for 400 children from the Orihuela district, and operate a carpenter's shop and auto workshop offering 4 years training with qualified staff so the youngsters have a Certificate of Competence before hopefully finding employment in local industry. The orphanage employs psychologists to assist the teachers, and specialist tutors also work there with special needs pupils”. If any club, association etc would like to help the children of The San Jose Obrero Orphanage to contact Lyn /Ken Adams on kenlyn15@hotmail.co.uk or 676 650 210.

‘X’ marks the spot on TREASURE ISLAND. The Rojales Pantomime Group are busily rehearsing their next swashbuckling and very funny pantomime to be performed 30, 31 January and 1 February – TREASURE ISLAND – an hilarious script by Ben Crocker. Long John Silver needs a pirate crew to sail on The Hispaniola to the Caribbean to find the treasure and he tasks Seadog Sam and Seaweed Willy to find him a crew, who accidentally bump into the ladies of the Smugglers Cove WI on Bristol dockside one afternoon and decide to recruit them. Will Long John be happy with his new crew, who are more at home baking cakes and knitting, but who now find themselves pirates in a panto? Come and see for yourselves all the mayhem and fun that ensues on their quest for the treasure. There’s going to be Yo Ho Hos galore, along with some silly slapstick comedy, as well as lots of songs, dances, plenty of surprises for the audience and not forgetting a very old parrot called Polly! The Rojales Pantomime Group raised around 3000€ from their last pantomime, which was donated to various local charities and they are hoping to raise even more from this next hilarious production which will be performed at The Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio for three nights at 7.30pm. Tickets are 8€ adults, 5€ children and ticket outlets will be advertised in the local press very shortly. our ARIES There are some things that are just not worth fighting for right now so save your time and energy. Decide what is important and stick to getting those sorted and leave the rest to another time. TAURUS You feel that you could take on the world, but maybe you need to concentrate on getting things done so you can get a bit of a rest before the start of the new year. Treat yourself, not in an extravagant way, just something especially for you. GEMINI There is time for fun and fulfilling your responsibilities, it doesn't have to be one or the other. You are trying to do so many different things at the moment and juggling them all could end in disaster if you don't ask for some help. CANCER Things are looking so positive for you into the new year, just don't let anyone spoil all your plans. If they are bah humbug then let them be, just don't let it affect you. LEO You will be making lots of new friends as the party season takes you to places you wouldn't normally visit. Many of these will just be casual connections. Some will really make an impact on you, so far as to make you question some long term beliefs. VIRGO You are thinking in a very sensible and logical way when everyone else is thinking fun. Stay focussed on your goals but let your hair down a bit and enjoy the festivities.

oroscope LIBRA Let your hair down a little this month. You have been so caught up with things that you are not really stopping to enjoy yourself. Let others take the weight a bit more, have some quality family time and recharge those batteries. SCORPIO Family are going to want to help in all the wrong ways and at all the wrong times. Breathe and be tactful and the season to be jolly can be just that. Soon you will have your space back. SAGITTARIUS Getting your work done first means that you can really let your hair down and party without the worry of anything outstanding. Life is all about balance, as you are finding out. CAPRICORN Plan ahead and all will fall into place. Leave it to the last minute and you will be looking at a disastrous outcome. Delegating some of the tasks will help you, and make others feel they have contributed to the final outcome. AQUARIUS Everything you do seems to turn out the best it ever has and so many happy coincidences are happening in your life right now. Go with it and enjoy the ride whilst it lasts. PISCES It is difficult for you to get into a festive mood, but once you start it will be just as hard to stop you. Don't go overboard or you will regret it later. A decision you were finding hard to make is taken out of your hands.

A View From

The Top

Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. A Few Wonders for Christmas Well Dear Reader I cannot believe that it's almost Christmas again. In the past I have always offered some thoughts about the year past and some comments about the world as I see it ...with that in mind here goes...

3. For my part the most awful thing about the closing year was the news that some Children with Autism living in 21st Century Britain are locked up 24 hours each and every day in what a recent report called "hostile and inhuman" conditions. Yes, people in Britain who are not mentally ill treated like Lepers (not that I would advocate hostile and inhuman treatment for anyone). 4. Enough of the above ...I am getting depressed by it all. What did cheer me up however was the sight of a young girl of 9 or 10 standing outside her school as parents held a protest against Climate Change... The simple home made banner she was holding said "you may die of old age"..."however I may die from Climate Change" stark and to the point. Oh, and before you old objecting farts choke on your Christmas Sherry remember ...Us ...you and me of a superior age, are responsible for the state of the planet. My Wonder here is at the vastly superior moral code that young people appear to have in comparison to us old people who seem to live by the first come first served view of life. 5. If you have read my stuff before then you will have an idea that I love my sport. What I do not love however is the introduction of the "Very Awful Referee" VAR into Football. I can put up with the tinkering that has made the offside rule in general fairer ..but I never expected someone to be given offside because their armpit is offside. I accept the introduction of goal line technology has been a boon to the game, but for the life of me I cannot see how someone, sitting in a caravan 150 miles

&

1. My first thoughts are about "the wonder of Britain in the 21st Century". Firstly you will have noticed that it's Britain that I am talking about and I have steered clear of using the soon to be defunct "United Kingdom"...defunct because the title speaks volumes for what the UK is decidedly not. It is anything but united as a result of the calamitous Brexit decision that quite simply pitted people against people, and Nation against Nation in the quest to make the already rich very much richer ...just look at the wealth statistics of the British population and you will see what I mean. Nostradamus I am not but even I can see that the "United" part of what was the UK has been, or soon will be, swallowed up by English Nationalism.

QF Focus Magazine 2. I also had to wonder at the complete silence of the rabid British press core when the "Golden Wonder" himself Donald Trump took to the airwaves to announce to the people of Britain exactly how they should vote in the upcoming General Election. Let me think back to the reaction of the Fourth Estate when President Obama suggested the Britain’s place, due to location and history, could be better served in the European Union... Farage and his gang ...Daily Mail etc went ballistic... Donald Trump’s intervention... Oh the sound of silence.

QF Focus Magazine away from a particular stadium, can give an objective opinion via a video link using moveable coloured lines that appear to have been drawn by someone who has had several large brandies, on an incident that just happened at speed and in the custody of an already nominated four on site officials. Make the Managers sit down ...take the stupid technical areas away and give the fourth Referee a monitor to look at as an on site assistant to the Referee on the field of play...That’s fixed that. 6. Just returned from a visit to the daughter’s new home in Sussex ...nice new build house with lots of nice new build snags to be corrected. The showhouse shows one set of standards while the houses when built don't appear to be copies of the show house. The rooms etc are the same in number and size and the layout is the same ...however the electrics just do not match in terms of switchable lights and positions etc ...or rather they didn't ...just heard all is now as it should be ...that’s my girl. It’s the wonder of the power of persuasion and clear thought ... 7. On my travels, I often had to decamp into a local wayside inn just to escape the almost constant wind and rain. What is at first obvious is the difference in the range and type of ales and beers that are served here in Spain as opposed to those served in Sussex/ Hampshire. Larger, yes of course in both countries ...but what did please me was the amount of local brewed ales that were available ..after Spain the palate in terms of real ale becomes a wonder to behold ...London Pride ...Badgers Arse ...Shipwreck and Old Stoat ale to name a few. Oh, as for the price of course ...I had to wonder if I could afford any of them. 8. Home again now ...feeling warmer...nice to be dry and out of the freezing wind ...tired out as travelling is a very tiring thing to do. As I sat in Gatwick airport watching everyone else who all appeared to be as fed up as I was ...deciding shall I have a beer as I wait? No beer was had as I always wonder whether I shall need a pee while sitting on the aircraft while the aircraft sits waiting for a take off slot and the seat belt lights are on ...so I did what everyone

Page 25 else does. I buy a meal deal from one of several available stores ...a sandwich, a drink ...which is water and a snack. Did I want any food? No, not really but it’s just something to do while waiting at an airport. The water was sipped very slowly, and a pee was had every half an hour or so just to be on the safe side. Aircraft boarded ...and off we go ...I hate that thundering up the runway ...how do those great planes full of people and luggage manage to get up to such a speed as to enable them to leave the ground and a different level of physics to take over ...up we go into the night sky to be told the good news that due to a jet stream being in our favour, we will arrive in Alicante in 1 hour and 50 minutes ..which we duly did. The problem of course is that the 200 + mile per hour that winged me home, meant that the return journey would take some 2 hours 40 minutes ...now that Dear Reader is the Wonder of Mother Nature. 9. As The New Year approaches I hope and indeed pray that the Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse that are Trump, Johnson, Bolsonaro and Morrison (USA.. UK.. Brazil.. Australia) can find it within themselves to remember that the planet and its people belong to all of us, and are not their personal plaything. That’s enough of that for this year ...I hope that for the sake of us all, that as Human beings we can find it in our hearts to be kind, considerate and caring to our near and far kindred spirits. As someone once said, we get one go at life and then we die. Keep healthy ..have a great Christmas under the grace of God, and a Happy New Year to you all.

Are we happy about being the way we are? So many of us strive to be like others….pop stars, footballers, film stars, celebrities in other walks of life, without paying any attention to the differences that make it impossible to achieve those goals. We are all humans and yet we can learn a lot from the other side of life….the animal kingdom. Look how happily they accept their differences and live with them! Does the camel wish it looked like an elephant? Does a fox wish it was like a rabbit? They are all different, but still animals….we are all different, but still humans, so why do we try to be like someone else with different bone structure, different height, different appearance all round? When are we ever going to be content with who WE are and WHAT we are capable of being? Why can’t we understand and value the amazing variety in the human race and live every day to the full, and love and enjoy being who WE are? I know people who are very attractive, but who have spent their whole lives trying to be a copy of someone else, and I could cry to think of what has been lost in that process. We can give up our own identities by losing out on who WE are…what a waste! If we are not happy about some of the things about us we can make improvements. We can aim for everything that is going to be good for us and things that will improve our lives, but we are all so different that it is sad to just end up being a carbon copy of someone who we don’t even know, and whose character may well be very dubious! I can think of a few people who have carbon copies all over the place and yet they are not people to be admired. Everything we do starts with a thought, so why not think differently, stop following the crowds and become who YOU really are! Until the next time! Take care!

Book Review by Ivor Kindle

Title: Vegan on a Budget Author: Olivia Biermann Publisher: Robert Rose As a young man growing up in the Sixties I always remember my dear mother's face as I proudly declared to her "Mum... I am a vegetarian". In those days going veggi was seen as being different... In today's world although I am no longer a vegetarian, I still have a taste for meat free food...

food.

Er Indoors is vegan as is the Daughter in Law and I suspect my Christmas dinner will be a mix and match of vegan and non vegan

My research has shown that the best rated current vegan cookbook is "Vegan on a Budget". The book is full of easy to follow recipes that can be termed simple cooking without lots of ingredients. Mains - puds - are all included. This could be your first meat free Christmas...

One special event not to be missed is the annual Carols in the Square in Torrevieja on Friday 13 December at 5.30pm. Sadly, Master of Ceremonies Bill Singleton passed away earlier this year, and a special homage to him will possibly be performed at the event. It’s a fun event for all the family with Carols sung in different languages, and special performance by the Salt City Shakers‌ Don't forget that the 6 and 8 December are Public Holidays, and many businesses may also close on the Monday, giving them a break from Friday 6th to the 9th, so plan ahead for your shopping and banking needs. Another fun event to plan for is on the beach at La Zenia on Christmas Day, which attracts a huge audience to sing Christmas Carols in the morning, with many people bringing along a picnic to make a great day of it. Happy Christmas and Happy New Year everyone‌

“ABUS ”, Sportif Murcia 2019. Well this is one local Sportif that we have not entered before as last year was the first event and we were participating in another at the same time. 12 of us decided to take part on Saturday 28 September, however due to the storms and flooding the week before, half of the route had been washed away and some of the roads were still closed due to landslides, so the organisers cancelled it and rescheduled it for Saturday 9 November. Unfortunately many of our riders had other things planned or were not here, including myself as I had to work. I was so looking forward to it as I had just been given the all clear from the surgeon the week before, but never mind I gave my entry to Nobby as the event was full and he couldn’t get in. At 7am 6 of our riders from Team “Cyclogical”, based in Ciudad Quesada, were up early and excited as they loaded up and left the shop travelling to El Corte Ingles (one of the main sponsors) in the centre of Murcia for parking, registration and the start line. Abus, the main sponsor, are a German company who have been operating since 1924 specialising in home security and safety products worldwide. They also sponsor many clubs, teams, companies and sports events and now manufacture cycle helmets. The guys made their way to the nearest bar for the customary coffee and tostada to start the day off. The event started at El Corte Ingles at 9.30am sharp with 1000 riders making their way through Murcia town following the safety car, as the first 25km was controlled. Once they had left the town the signal was given for trama libre (free ride) and they were off racing uphill towards Garruchal, the first climb of the day, then down to San Pedro, up to Cabeza de la Plata, back to Garruchal, then the final climb to Cresta de Gallo and finishing with a fast downhill to the car park at the Monastery Fuensanta. In all a total distance of 100km with 1500 metres of climbing thrown in for good measure and a route that we do every 6 weeks, so the guys knew the road and climbs like the back of their hands. This was another Murcia cycling federation organised event, that was exceptionally well managed from the start to the finish, with 3 water and food stops on route. On completion there was also paella and beer available for all competitors and all the usual cycle stalls. There were quite a few accidents and technical problems on the way with the bin wagon collecting a few, there were only 655 riders finishing and the first rider was back in 3hr 15 mins with our guys not far behind - Dom TJ 31st 3hr 21min, Moth Robertson 44th 3hr 22min, Harry Morrow 116th 3hr 32min, Turbo Buckley 190th 3hr 43min, Nobby Nobbs 203rd 3hr 45min, Graham Hope 489th 4hr 8mins. A brilliant effort by all. All of the team had an excellent but very windy day’s cycling. Team “Cyclogical” meet every Tuesday and Thursday nights at 5.30pm and Sunday mornings at 8am and cover between 90 and 120kms at a moderate to fast pace so, if you fancy a challenge come along and join us. Looking to improve your fitness, riding ability and speed and also have a new group of friends to train and socialise with, then why not come along and give it a try or call Gary on 637 487 377.
