Where Did Our Solar System Come from? Part 1 I don't suppose many people sit around all day wondering where the Earth and all the other planets in the solar system came from. Fortunately for me and my fellow amateur astronomers, this is just the kind of question that fascinates us. A surprising amount is known about planetary formation, but I would be the first to admit the picture is far from complete and there is still a lot to discover. The past of our planets makes a remarkable story, and the future even more so. The first point in this little story I must make is that nothing is stable or permanent, everything is in a constant state of change, it always has been and always will be. Our short lives can give the illusion that the Earth is a safe and permanent place, but it's not. The effects of global warming are waking many people up to this fact. Let’s go back 4.5 billion years. The Sun, only a million years old, was formed by gravity drawing together lots of dust debris and gas. When there was enough material, it burst to life, an early version of what we see today. Since that time the Sun has been evolving, changing and will go on doing so until it dies. This constant change has had a massive effect on the planets, but I'll come back to that. After the Sun’s birth, there was a lot of debris left over, gravity was still working its effect and drawing together all this stuff into larger and larger lumps, many the size of planets. Space around the Sun was a very cluttered place and there were endless collisions, forming, shattering and re-forming rocks until we ended up with several planet sized lumps, but not anything that we today would recognise. Here things get a bit hazy, the solar system was more settled than previously, but still a violent place. If you worry about when a big rock will collide with Earth, be glad you didn't live back then. Another clue is that the planet Mercury, now the closest one to the Sun was formed somewhere near the orbit of Mars. There must have been an almighty whack to move it over 150 million kilometres

away, but it happened. We also know that around this time the giant planet Jupiter wasn't in a settled orbit, it came much closer than it is today. The immense gravity it wields changing the orbits of everything. They are just a couple of examples of those early years, but things did settle down, and the planets ended up pretty much where they are today. Hold on a bit though, I said earlier that the Sun was in a constant state of change. The planets may have found their niches, but conditions on them were utterly different to today. Let’s look at Venus, today the surface is hot enough to melt lead, acid in the air, a thoroughly unpleasant place. If you could hop back in time, you might walk out of your Tardis into a rather pleasant place, possibly a human could have survived long enough to look through a telescope at an early Earth and be glad they didn't live there. Anyway, I've run out of space for this month, so you'll have to wait for next month’s magazine for some more insights into the early years of our home system. Vega Baja Astronomy Group

With the BBQ season now in full force I am on a mission to tidy up our solarium and make more use of it this summer, even though it generally gets far too hot up there. I think we may need to invest in a gazebo so we can have some shaded area for ourselves as well as our pups. I was very proud of my little angel in the end of year dance show at the theatre in Rojales. She has turned into such a good dancer but I’m not sure who she gets her rhythm from ...her dad seems to be a little disillusioned that it’s from him but I’m not quite so sure. She also took part in a fund raising day recently at the Olive Bar in Quesada with Essense Dance & Fitness where everyone was astounded with the response from the public and raised a fantastic 635€ to help the young ones get to Rome. The fiesta season is upon us once again with the bridge finally being open in Rojales for the processions. There is rumour that the access is only a temporary measure for the fiestas and it will then close again to complete the works, although as we all know there will be no work happening during August, so hopefully it will remain open. At the end of the month the fiestas will start in Benijófar and at the beginning of August in Quesada ...oh I can see it is going to be a busy time! We are off on our much deserved yearly holiday very soon where I’m hoping to recharge our batteries before returning to a back to back summer full of visitors. It's unlikely to be a relaxed holiday though as for the 1st time in 6 years we have our oldest son joining us and I find it very difficult these days to keep up with 24 year olds! Congratulations to Jo Fielding-Eaton from Quesada who won last month's 50€ competition after spotting the logo on page 21 (it also appeared on page 24 again as some of you noticed!). See if you can spot the logo in this issue for a chance to win 50€, see inside for details of how to enter. Good luck!

Did you know that life rewards action? I think it is worth us all realising that nothing works if you have thoughts without actions. Talk is cheap. It's what you do that determines the script of your life. Translate your thoughts into purposeful, meaningful, constructive actions. They are of no value until then. Measure yourself and others based on results - not intentions or words. Realise that we all see things differently and try to identify the way in which you view the world. Acknowledge your past without being controlled by it …yesterday has GONE! Just learn from it. You have the ability to choose how you see any event in your life, and you exercise this power of choice in every circumstance, every day of your life. No matter what the situation, you choose your reaction, and give value to any event in your life. Life is managed; it is not cured. So why not learn to take charge of your life and hold on. This is a long ride, and you are the driver every single day. The key to managing your life is to have a system. If you have a clear-cut plan, and the courage, commitment and energy to execute that system, you can flourish. If you don't have a plan, you'll be a stepping stone for those who do. We teach people how to treat us. Admit to, rather than complain about, how people treat you. Learn to improve your relationships to have what you want …you can do it! You either teach people to treat you with dignity and respect, or you don't. This means you are partly responsible for the mistreatment that you get at the hands of someone else. You shape others' behaviour when you teach them what they can get away with and what they cannot. If the people in your life treat you in an undesirable way, figure out what you are doing to allow that treatment. Identify the reaction you may be giving someone in response to any negative behaviour. For example, when people are aggressive, bossy or controlling - and then they get their way - you have rewarded them for unacceptable behaviour. Think about this. You can change things! Until the next time…Take Care!

Some Common Questions Answered

Are Habitation Licences Required To Sell A Property In Almeria Or Murcia Area? Actually, an occupation licence is not a document required to sell a property at the notary within the Murcia Region, but you may find that solicitors from Alicante area ask for it, even if it’s not legally essential to sign a sale. Having said that, a habitation licence is only required in Alicante. Why Is The Average EPC Rating So Low? This is basically due to poor insulation in local building methods. Ratings in Southern Spain are generally very low but this fact doesn’t affect the marketing process or the property´s price. What Is The Difference Between An EPC In UK And Spain There is little difference between the UK and Spanish standards or protocol with an EPC. Surveyors in UK take into account light bulbs whilst in Spain we are not allowed to include light bulbs and other installations that are not likely to be permanent during the 10 year validation of the certificate. Have The EPC Inspections Started? Yes, the inspection process has started for properties offered for sale or rent. A couple of years ago 42 agencies were fined regarding most of their clients in Catalonia. In Murcia inspections have started activated by ‘denuncias’ between estate agents and also to detect false or unqualified technicians. In Madrid full inspections and fining has officially started, revealing that 20% of the cases were actions against the unqualified “technicians”, 40% were cases against falsified documents, and the final 40% were for cases of properties that didn't have the obligatory EPC prepared for the purposes of marketing for sale or leasing. In Alicante we have only heard of cases where fines have been given to agents or sellers after neighbours, purchasers or other agencies have reported them.

QF Focus Magazine Is It Obligatory To Have A Retrospective Licence? There is no law that makes it obligatory to have a Retrospective Licence (also known as a Certificate of Antiquity), but as a matter of fact now all purchasers or solicitors are asking to have licences correctly in place. Most vendors prefer to have a Retrospective Licence when a pool or extension has been done without a licence or without the proper licence. Vendors benefit from having this done sooner rather than later, as explained before, to avoid trying to organise such things at the last moment (when sales are already very stressful) and to avoid additional “in panic” expenses. Plus, we are seeing an increase of vendors having these licenses done to prevent losing the confidence of a potential purchaser due to the existence of illegal parts of the property. Likewise agents are now more likely to expect a vendor to have this license for the sake of their reputations, so as not to sell a property that is only "partially" legal and prevent having possible disgruntled clients later on. What Do I Need To Have A Retrospective Licence? The conditions needed in Alicante area to obtain Retrospective Licences / Antiquity Certificates for extensions or pools is that the extension or pool needs to be over 4 years old, before the 20 August 2014, and without having received any objections from authorities. Martinez de la Casa Architects is the Number 1 company in EPC Certificates (121€ inc IVA) and Number 1 for Antiquity Certificates/Retrospective Licences for pools (190€ +IVA) and building extensions (270€ +IVA). We also offer superb discounts to groups of 2 clients or more on the same visit, or if you require a combination of legal certificates/services. If your Solicitors are studying your case, ask them to contact us to provide any of these documents and we will make the whole process easier, faster and cheaper for you. SAVE MONEY ON A MORTGAGE! A NEW property mortgage law came into effect last month, which is very important to you if you are looking to get a mortgage here in Spain, because it now puts money in your pocket. Sun Lawyers are right across this piece of legislation, which is good news for saving money whilst you get the mortgage, as well as boosting your legal rights. Under the changes, you will only pay the property valuation fee which will be between 300 and 600 euros, and you can choose any valuer to do the work. The rest of the mortgage expenses will be paid for by the bank. If you are thinking of applying to getting a mortgage, then we are the people to help you. Our team have the experience in all property matters, and those all important changes to the law. Sun Lawyers take all the stress out of dealing with the legal red tape, with a team that you can trust. The new law has many aspects about it, but these are some of the key points that we have identified: 1. MORTGAGE TAX. Before the changes, you as the customer had to fork out pretty much all the costs for your mortgage, but now the emphasis shifts to the mortgage lender, though you still have to pay for the valuation. Sun Lawyers will make sure that you only pay what the new law says you have to, and you pocket the savings!

Page 11

QF Focus Magazine 2. BETTER CUSTOMER PROTECTION A mortgage provider now has to offer written guarantees as to what they are offering to you, with all the terms and conditions clearly spelt out, including what their various rates will be in different situations, like changes in the interest rate. You will also have to visit a notary at least a day before a formal signing to certify, free of charge, that you can keep your end of the bargain, and also that your lender has provided all the correct legal documentation.

7. HELPING YOU A new body to handle complaints over mortgages will be introduced, but at the moment, the Bank of Spain will be across such matters.

Any clauses in any mortgage agreements that don’t comply with the law can see you take legal action, but Sun Lawyers will have made sure that you won’t be putting pen to paper for something that is not correct.

These are just a few of the headlines of the new law that Sun Lawyers have identified, but there are also many other aspects, which will vary from person to person.

We have the experts that will pour over all the details for you to make this process straight-forward. 3. CHEAPER REPAYMENTS Early mortgage repayments will be made cheaper and can only be charged for if the bank will make a loss. The limits will be different depending on the type of mortgage. 4. REPOSSESSION REDUCED If you get into trouble with your repayments, don’t panic. One of the big new changes in the law is that banks cannot enforce a repossession until at least 12 months, and that can stretch to 15 months, if you hit problems later on during your mortgage period. 5. FLOOR REMOVED The new law sees the ban of applying a minimum interest rate to variable mortgages, which means that banks will no longer be able to apply the controversial floor clause to mortgages. 6. MULTI CURRENCY Customers who have a mortgage in a currency like the British pound will have the right to switch to the Euro at any time, and the lender will have to say how much extra that would cost you.

If you are buying a property and looking to get a mortgage, then get in touch with us for a free no obligation quotation in the secure knowledge that we know what we are talking about, with years of experience on the Costa Blanca. With all the new complexities of the law, which has boosted customer rights, it is vital to get the right sort of legal backing, which is why we at Sun Lawyers are here to help. For more information, do get in touch with us at Sun Lawyers, and don’t forget that free consultation. You can call on (0034) 96 532 1193 or email us at admin@sun-lawyers.com.

our ARIES You are feeling very rebellious against everything and everyone and just can't stop yourself. Try to find some way of doing things which won't have lasting effects on you or those around you, and don't break rules that weren't meant to be or have dire consequences. TAURUS Getting out of your comfort zone will prove to them that you are able to cope and make decisions when things are tough. At last, this will bring the recognition you were hoping for from your peers and someone you have admired for a long time. GEMINI It is your time to shine at what you do best. Let people see the whole you instead of holding back any more. Doing it tactfully rather than in a 'look at me' way will also gain you respect. CANCER Try not to lay all your cards out too soon and keep some back as opening yourself up fully may lead to confusion. They need to see this bit by bit to allow them to adapt to this idea. LEO Sparks are going to be flying as one miscommunication after another leaves you almost in disbelief. Step back and look at it from their point of view, it may be as much your fault as theirs. VIRGO If you can't change it then stop trying and move on. It may be sad and frustrating but you need to do this for your own good. The feeling of relief will soon get you back on track and feeling more positive again.

oroscope LIBRA Relationships become closer and more meaningful than ever before and you are enjoying the feeling of closeness more than you thought you could. Problems at work could cost you dearly later on if you don't address them immediately. SCORPIO Rarely do you do something without good reason so why this should be any different. Taking risks can sometimes pay off but you really need to decide if you can afford too right now. SAGITTARIUS You feel that you can take on the world right now especially where work is concerned. A projects which has been put on hold is crying out to be restarted, so what's stopping you? Get on with it. CAPRICORN Even if it doesn't feel like it, you are always in control. If your gut feelings are saying no, then there is probably a good reason, even if it is not that obvious to you right now. AQUARIUS Patience is the key at the moment, and as those around you are trying to rush things, you will have to be the one to pull them back and slow them down. It's easier to let them carry on, but if you do you will regret it later on. PISCES You now know things that you wish you never knew but there is no turning back. The problem now is wether to act on the knowledge or just carry on as if nothing has changed. If you can, talk things through with someone who can help you decide.

Seven out of every Ten Ovarian Cancers are diagnosed in advanced phases

Seven out of every ten ovarian cancers are diagnosed in their most advanced phases, because they present very non-specific symptoms that can be confused with other pathologies, which means that carcinomatosis is already present in most cases, state the specialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Murcia on the World Day dedicated to this disease, which was observed on Wednesday 8 May. In Spain, ovarian cancer is the fourth cause of death by cancer in women and, although it is not extremely common, there are 3,200 new cases diagnosed each year. The age range presenting the most incidence is between 55 and 65 years of age, and although it’s not very common, it is often very aggressive and insidious when it comes to diagnosis, due to its non-specific symptoms, which can be confused with abdominal discomfort similar to indigestion, changes in intestinal rhythm and, sometimes, the appearance of vaginal haemorrhages between menstrual cycles or in menopausal women. When confronted with these symptoms, specialists recommend going to the doctor and undergoing all necessary tests. According to Doctor Pedro Bretcha, Surgical Oncology Specialist Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, “The use of technology is important, but what is most necessary is a multidisciplinary perspective regarding the cancer, with a specialised team, because treatment of this disease cannot be left exclusively in the hands of a surgeon, an oncologist or a gynaecologist; it must be led in a consensual manner and adapted to each patient”. HIPEC increases Survival Rates in Patients with Ovarian Cancer Surgery, and particularly the use of HIPEC, increases survival rates in patients with ovarian cancer. This treatment is currently applied by the specialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Murcia on patients diagnosed with peritoneal carcinomatosis, a pathology defined as the dissemination of a primary cancer, which can be digestive or gynaecological, throughout the abdominal cavity, so it ends up affecting other intra-abdominal organs. According to Doctor Pedro

Cascales, Oncological Surgeon at Hospital Quirónsalud Murcia, “It is precisely in these patients that, with the right approach, we can get results that could hardly be imagined before, results that depend significantly on the surgical team treating the patients”. In fact, the use of HIPEC increases the survival rate of patients with stage-III epithelial ovarian cancer. In addition, its use does not add any complications to the surgical procedure. This is the conclusion reached by the authors of a clinical trial published in the prestigious scientific journal The New England Journal of Medicine. Treatment with HIPEC allows for the combination of a high-intensity dose of chemotherapy, focused on the affected area, with a lower systemic toxicity due to the limited spreading of the medication from the peritoneal cavity to the systemic bloodstream, due to the characteristics of the peritoneal membrane and the medications itself. Its use requires high-training centres, with multidisciplinary teams and a high specialisation in oncological surgery, because it is a very complex technique. About Quirónsalud: Quirónsalud is the most important hospital group in Spain and, together with its Fresenius-Helios headquarters, also in Europe, it has over 40,000 professionals working in over 125 healthcare centres, which include 47 hospitals offering close to 7,000 hospital beds. It boasts cutting-edge technology and a great team of highly specialised professionals with international prestige. Currently, Quirónsalud is developing over 1,600 research projects; many of its centres perform cutting-edge work in this field, and are pioneers in different specialisations, eg oncology, cardiology, endocrinology, gynaecology and neurology, among others.

Charity Fundraising Night & BBQ at Harrys Bar As a brief introduction to myself... my name is Ian Driver, I am 53 years old and I have lived in Quesada for the last 14 years. In 2011 I had a change in my life style, which 3 years later led to me taking up long distance running. Since then I've run the Nottingham half marathon, Great North Run and a local half marathon in the village in the UK where I grew up (raising money for Help The Heroes). Since then it's been on my bucket list to run the London Marathon and have been entering the general ballot and also applied to Charities without any success for the past 6 years. Finally my application to run in the 2020 London Marathon for a charity called Caudwell Children in Newcastle-under-Lyme UK got accepted. The aims of Caudwell Children are to change the futures of all disabled children providing access to the services, equipment, therapies and treatments they need. By increasing awareness and understanding the needs of disabled children across the UK will enable disabled children to lead an active and independent life reaching their full potential helping them lead ordinary lives. So why not come and join us up at Harry's Bar Quesada on Thursday 18 July (6pm 'til late) for a night of fundraising for my Virgin London 2020 Marathon Run and chosen Charity Caudwell Children UK. There will be lots going on all night including, guess the amount sweets in the jar, guess my finishing time for the marathon, raffle draw (raffle boxes on sale now at Harrys Bar) Music bingo, and much more. Also Harry's Bar BBQ will be fired up. If you can`t make it, please donate on my Just Giving Page; www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ian-driver26?utm_id=121.

As we head into the Summer, the temperatures continue to rise along with the fortunes of the Blenheims in the South Alicante Summer League Spitfire Division. They’ve had some great wins in the last few weeks and are currently 3rd place in the league just 3 points behind the leaders and with a game in hand ....well done Blenheims and keep up the good work. We’re hoping to see you at the top of the league when the summer season ends. There's more good news for the Lions in the VCL League A Division. They’ve won 6 and drawn 1 of the 8 matches they’ve played. This means they are in second place in the league only 4 points behind the leaders, San Luis Falcons. Meanwhile, the South Alicante Knockout competition is progressing and Quesada still have representation in the following disciplines which are due to complete the next round by the time we have gone to print: Mens singles (Peter Morgan, Terry Morgan and Colin Highland). Ladies singles (Mel Highland). Mens Pairs (Terry Morgan and Alan Barton). Mixed Pairs (Terry Morgan and Claire Dye). Quesada was also well represented with 6 entries in the Greenlands Open Mixed Pairs competition which took place in glorious sunshine over 3 days on 14th, 15th and 16th June.

All of the Quesada teams played well, and there was some close results with 2 of the pairs knocked out in the last match so just missing out on the semi-finals. It was a terrific event, very well organised and enjoyable with a great atmosphere from both the contestants and the supporters. Well done Greenland’s for staging such a successful event. The results of the semi-finals and finals were: Semi-Finals Phil and Mary Lockley (Greenlands) -v- David and Shena Barnes (Bonalba). Dennis and Carol Birkett (Country Bowls) -v- Fred and Gail Wiltshire (San Miguel). The finalists were - Phil and Mary Lockley -v- Dennis and Carol Birkett. And many congratulations to the winners - Dennis and Carol Birkett. Quesada Bowls Club welcomes both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. Book Review by Ivor Kindle

Book title: The Sixth Man Author: David Baldacci Publisher: Macmillian Retired Secret service agents turned private detectives Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, take up the case of Edgar Roy a supposed serial killer. Roy in fact is the number one intelligence analyst for the United States intelligence agencies. He is able, not only to analyse multiple intelligence information, but is also able to formulate forward planning in respect of the said information. The competition for the vast sums paid to both Federal intelligence agencies and private based intelligence gatherers leads to competition where no holds are barred. Political ambition and common greed abound in this fast paced Sean and Maxwell thriller. The pace is constant as the victims of corporate greed and political ambition mount up. Baldacci writes with both brute force and quiet reflection ...a cracking Summer read. ...Keep reading, Ivor Kindle.

A View From

The Top

Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. Fonzie and his Pals.

Customer service and you the customer. Many years ago, during my working life I was responsible for the communications requirements of a customer base that covered in geographical terms, the whole of what

&

Those of you who read my ramblings will be aware that a year or so ago we took into our family a rescued Irish Terrier called Fonzie. I have written about life with the Fonz on a couple of occasions ...well Dear Reader you have guessed it's time for another episode of the "life and times of the Fonz". Being a Terrier, and coming up to 17 months old, it appears that at last he has caught on that it's us humans that are in charge and it is he that is supposed to do as he is told. The fact that he was abandoned to his own devices until he was four months old had, in our opinion, given him a little leeway in the discipline department. We have worked hard with him using kindness and with the help of Angela and Pedro, coupled with his own remarkable character, Fonzie is now giving as much as he is taking in the Dog ...Human relationship stakes. Angela (Dog Training Guru) has become a family friend and has gone out of her way to help us with his behaviour and his general well being via her skill with dog discipline, and her willingness to walk the Fonz with our other dog Santos and her dog Zana. Pedro has spent

QF Focus Magazine time with Fonzie getting him used to other dogs in general and helping with his walking to command etc. Yes, Yes, I can hear you say ...dogs do these things naturally so what is the big issue? The issue is that as stated earlier Fonzie was dumped and left to fend for himself. Four months living off the land so to speak has had to have an effect on both his general behaviour and of course his attitude to food. Basically he did have a ‘see food and eat it’ attitude ...living wild, food of course was his main concern in the survival stakes. What is remarkable is that his character means that he has a lovely trust of people and those who now know him know that he just loves the company of other dogs. Exercise is important of course and Fonzie loves to visit the Rojales dog compound where both himself and other dogs have the opportunity to run free and socialise with a host of other dogs of all types and sizes. The exercise is also good for us owners, who get the chance to go round the compound a couple of times whilst keeping our eyes open for fresh ones to clean up ...in fact just this morning I was left laughing as a fellow owner's two dogs decided to poo at the same time but in different places ...bloody hell he retorted "they are pooing in stereo", as he went about his responsible owner duties and cleaned up after his dogs. In general Fonzie is doing well ...he has certainly enhanced our lives ...yes he is hard work ...yes sometimes he is a real pain and yes he does tie us down somewhat ...but is he worth it? ...you bet he is ...nuisance ..sod and a sometime pest ...but like all loved dogs he gives back so much. So it’s thanks to all his doggie playmates ...Iker, Jack, Bom-Bon, Daisy, Lola's one and two, Marmite, Luna, Max, Hermes, Loki and of course the famous Pointer sisters, and the Coccapoos, and all the others who are too many to mention ...may you run free and enjoy your doggie lives.

QF Focus Magazine was known as "Outer London". It was not only the management of the work flow database that was within my remit ...for my sins I also had responsibility for "customer satisfaction" measures. My boss ...a company director, made it quite clear, ‘Customer satisfaction is down to you.’ he said, ‘I do not want to see or hear about any complaints. Fix the problems before I see them.’ was his command. Now coming from an engineering background ...the idea that the customer is always right was, in truth, not something that came naturally to me. I found myself still working in an engineering environment, but now I was running the management of the installations rather than actually doing the installations as an engineer. Now attitudes come and go and my attitude toward "the customer" took a rapid change as I saw first hand the many ways, both foreseen and unforeseen, that customers could be mistreated at the hands of seemingly remote and distant organisations, whose mandate was to provide good customer service. The theory that "the buck stopped with me" certainly made me think long and hard about the who, what and why of customer demands. Now I raise this issue simply because all these years later my cohort of wisdom that is the table of knowledge, seems to be preoccupied with the level of service that is "dished out" at a variety of Spanish Banks to their customers. Customer service, I am informed by my table of wisdom colleagues, has always been poor at best and indeed seems to have gone from bad to worse in several Spanish banking establishments. Why can I not pay this bill on a day of my choice rather than have to pay on a day specified by the bank? Why are there people sitting at desks seemingly doing nothing when the queue for the teller is out of the door? Why, when the teller cannot answer the simplest of question and the manager is requested, he/she also seems totally

Page 21 unable to answer the simplest of questions? Why, when things go wrong does it always seem to be the customer that is in the wrong? Why, oh why, do I have to go to my original branch to get something done? Example - same bank customer sent to Villamartin branch to ask questions re a deceased persons account ...the person asking the questions now lives and banks locally to Quesada but was still sent to Villamartin only to be told that they did not know the answer to a basic question. Banks are connected by integrated systems ...the internet etc ...they in general all do the same work ...can customer everyday banking be so difficult that the answer must always lie somewhere else rather close to home. Customer service should be at the forefront of the ethos of banking ...if it is not, then the banks are failing their customers ...if it is about training, then their training is not good enough ...if it is about the staff ...then quite simply they are employing the wrong people. Remember without our money banks are redundant. Cats in a sack. Been watching with both interest and trepidation the scrambling amongst the Tory hopefuls who are all battling to become Leader of the Conservative party and hence Prime Minister ...it’s a mad scramble amongst some of the most unsavoury characters in modern politics. Coke snorters ...philanderers ...and downright liars to be included in their portfolio of sins. Leading the scramble is one Boris Pfeffel Johnson ...a failure as Foreign Secretary and a general idiot ...which makes him the obvious choice to be Prime Minister. You really could not make it up!

Forthcoming Events By Keith Nicol It's summer time, school's out and, for the next couple of months, tourists will be arriving in their thousands, car parking spaces will be at premium, the beaches kind of busy, but sunny skies and evenings on the terrace and sidewalk cafes will now become part of the routine. If you have not visited the Titanic Quarter in Belfast, one of the next best Titanic Expos will be taking place in Alicante. The exhibition 'Titanic, The Reconstruction' helps you to discover what life was like aboard the Titanic and takes place from 22 May to 10 November, in the Lonja del Pescado, the Fish Market Hall, in the Port of Alicante. It is an extensive and emotional exhibition that invites the visitor to experience life on board the Titanic, through objects, stories and real scenarios. The exhibition will have a model of the ship, the largest in the world, built at 1:30 scale, which is 12 metres long, 4.20 high and 3.90 wide. It will also have the original 'Titanic car', which was manufactured in Detroit (USA), in 1909. It is a Brush D.24, recognised as the oldest car in the world that can still circulate. Another of the jewels of the exhibition will be Enrique Gran's original painting 'El Sueño del Titanic'. The exhibition, in turn, includes real objects of the passengers who sailed on board the ship, as well as the stories of the survivors of the sinking. More info: http://www.fundaciontitanic.com.

Moratalla Sportif, May 2019 Here we go again, another 5.30am start from the shop on a beautiful Sunday morning in May, this time 12 of us in 4 vehicles are heading to Moratalla in the North of Murcia to participate in the 21st Moratalla cycle Marcha (Sportif ).

I have just had a new Titanium hip fitted and although I’m back cycling with the group I am not ready to stand up and cycle uphill yet so today I’m spectating and have a special guest with me my 91 year old Dad who has come to watch his first live cycle Sportif. There are 2 routes to choose from today 110km or 180km, both great routes with some cracking steep hills thrown in. We arrived at 7am and found the perfect parking spot right next to the start line which was already being set up. We located the only open restaurant after a nice walk around the town and had our coffee and tostadas. We then made our way to the sports centre and registered, collected our numbers, goody bags and snacks before walking back to the cars to prepare our bikes. At the cars everyone unloaded their beloved bikes attached their race numbers, pumped up the tyres and got changed into cycling gear. We were soon on the start line along with 600 other riders of all ages and abilities, all out to achieve the same as us, to try and beat each other and successfully finish with a good time. At 9am sharp the gun sounded and off they went, following the safety car for the first 25k at quite a brisk pace passing through the beautiful picturesque town of Carravaca de la Cruz. It wasn’t long before the car sounded its horn which meant ‘Trama Libre’ (free ride) and they were off straight into the first climb of the day which lasted for 7k with an average gradient of 8%, this sorted everyone out and our team were already split into several little groups, with the fast guys making a rapid getaway. There were quite a lot of under 23 semi-professional Spanish riders taking part and you could see how good they were by the speed that they left everyone behind. The route was excellently thought through with everything from gentle climbs to tough climbs, switchbacks, downhills and level sections, as usual in this part of Spain the scenery was fantastic especially as they gained height. The weather was great with hardly any wind. Dad and I walked round the town until we found a little tapas bar where we stopped and spent some quality time together over a few tapas, coffee and a beer. We walked back to the finish line where there were 2 lanes, the lane on the right was the finish for the 110km riders, but the lane on the left was for the 180km riders to continue on. As always I tell the guys it’s not about the winning it’s about the competing and doing your best along with 600 other like minded individuals. Dad and I waited at the finish line taking pictures of all our guys as they crossed the line in ones and twos, exhausted. Everyone of our riders did well with good times but not good enough to get on the podium. There was pasta and beer for everyone at the finish line which was enjoyed by all. Another great sportif, well organised, well marshalled and plenty of water stops, well done again Murcia Region. Everyone is now looking forward to our next one Tour Of Juguette in Alicante region. Team “Cyclogical” meet every Tuesday and Thursday night at 5.30pm and Sunday mornings at 8am and cover between 90 and 120kms at a moderate to fast pace. So, if you fancy a challenge come along and join us. Looking to improve your fitness, riding ability and speed and also have a new group of friends to train with, then why not come along and give it a try or call Gary on 637 487 377.
