Our Solar System Last month I tried to get across to readers just how big the known universe is. I used lots of very big numbers and possibly made your head ache. This month I'll keep to a smaller scale and describe the size of our Solar System, our home which is a miniscule part of the universe, but still rather large. Many of us know about the 8 major planets that go around the Sun, from Mercury all the way out to Neptune. Then there is Pluto, one-time outermost planet, now described as a minor planet. Pluto was visited by a space probe called New Horizons back in the summer of 2015, and the data and pictures it sent have changed a lot of things in astronomy. New Horizons was in the news again recently, it visited a strange object in an area called the Kuiper Belt. ‘What the heck is the Kuiper belt?’ you might ask. This is a huge area of bits of rock and ice that make up a broad ring around our Sun, but outside of all the planets. It's possibly the debris left over when all our planets were formed. Imagine if you can a picture of all the planets laid out, they would all be in the same plane, you could go in an almost straight line from the orbit of one planet to another. The main solar system is like a disc, not a sphere. Now for the last bit of our Solar System, let me introduce you to the Oort Cloud, named after a Dutch astronomer. This is an area very little is known about, it's well outside of the planets and the Kuiper belt, and it forms a sphere around the whole Solar System. It's probably a mixture of fine particles and dust with bits of ice mixed in, and it's huge. To give you some idea how far away it extends, it reaches out more than halfway to our nearest star. It goes out more than 30 trillion kilometres. 30 Trillion is a hard number to imagine, to give you an idea 30 trillion seconds of time would be roughly 930 thousand years. So now you know that even our tiny corner of the universe is still vast to us humans, it's also the only place we have to live, so we'd better look after it! Before I close for this month, The Astronomy Group will be hosting a viewing evening in the spring. I don't have a date yet so if you want to know more email us at vegabaja.astronomygroup@gmail.com.

Over the last few months there has been one main subject on everyone's minds but we don't have much longer to wait to hear the outcome. Even when Brexit does actually happen it seems that there will still be lots of sorting out to be done which will no doubt take a while. I think the fact that nobody really knows the full impact, is what is causing so much uncertainty and nervousness but it is out of our control and whatever will be, will be. This month there is a lot going on. I will be attending the forthcoming Expo Torrevieja on the weekend of 9 & 10 March at the Auditorium in Torrevieja and will have copies of our latest publications for the public to pick up. The venue has plenty of parking next to the Hospital Quiron and has always attracted lots of visitors with the various companies and services on hand giving advice and offering their latest promotions. My little angel is partaking in the St Patrick's Day parade at Cabo Roig on Sunday 17 March with her dance school Essence Dance & Fitness. Last year it was a jam packed event with everyone getting in the spirit with fancy dress and face painting. The difference for me this year is that I think I will make a wise decision and leave my car at home to enable me to also join in the fun! With the furry additions to our family I have now found myself with a chewed and torn dressing gown and my other half is minus a slipper ...just as well we have Spanish Father's Day coming up on Tuesday 19 March and Mother's Day on Sunday 31 March - HINT, HINT KIDS!!!! I was saddened to hear of the passing of Susan Reader recently. I have had many dealings over the years with Susan as she actively organised charity events and helped local companies promote their businesses, frequently asking me to support by publishing these events. She dedicated so much time and effort and she will be sorely missed by all that knew her, RIP Susan. Congratulations to Mo Jarvis from Rojales who won last month's 50â‚Ź competition after spotting the logo on page 19. See if you can spot the logo in this issue for a chance to win 50â‚Ź, see inside for details of how to enter. Good luck!

The Gran Alacant & La Marina branch of the Royal British Legion recently enjoyed a day trip to Agost Known as the Pottery Village, Ceramics have been made here for the last two centuries. However our visit was not to one of the still operational potteries, but to the Museo de Cantereria. A museum housed in a former ceramic factory, which has been adapted to the needs of 21st century tourism. On our guided tour, we were able to see firsthand an extensive collection of objects for daily use, from the earliest to the present-day. We learned of the process of making the pottery, and lived the experience of entering an “Arab Kiln. We saw the potters wheels of various heights and sizes. And the enormous outside basins which were used for the decantation of the clay. Our thanks go to the Museum guide Jesus, for an excellent informative presentation which to the eternal gratitude of our members, was in English. After the tour, we moved on to a local restaurant, where we were royally wined and dined. The Gran Alacant branch of the Royal British Legion meets on the first Monday of the month, 6pm at in Lounge D, Plaza Mayor, Gran Alacant. Never jump into project expenses without being sure a licence will be issued Here are 5 common reasons for the Council to reject a licence which, if the work is already done, can only be resolved using a simple Certificate of Antiquity/Retrospective Licence. 1: Building work on plots that have already used there maximum build area. All plots have a maximum area which you are allowed to build on. This is known as maximum built area allowed. If the property has already reached the maximum size allowed, no major licence will be issued. 2: Plot under the minimum required size. No building work is allowed if the plot is under the minimum square metres required to build in the area. Some plots, although being legal, are under the minimum required size for building. This being the case no licence will be issued. Any existing shed, exterior built cupboard, semi-opened kitchen and other covered buildings or works such as a carport or pools will need a retrospective licence in order to become unobjectable in the future. 3: Extensions violating the minimum required distance to the plot’s boundaries. Permanent carports, or any kind of roofed buildings that are violating the minimum required distance to the plot’s boundaries is a reason to decline a license. National planning laws for detached properties require a minimum distance between a window and a neighbour’s boundary of 2 metres. Regional and local laws
may allow between 3 to even 5 metres or more. There are many variables depending on different factors. A Certificate of Antiquity is the only document that can avoid previous works being objected to by the planning department at the Town Hall. 4: Closing in small existing gaps in the property: patios, existing terraces, porches. Most glass or bricked enclosed terraces and porches will not be allowed to be glazed in or transformed into interior spaces. Spanish properties traditionally tend to have patios and courtyards, along with semi-opened spaces like porches and partially covered terraces to provide shelter from the sun and to maximise the outdoor lifestyle. These semi-opened spaces are easily closed-in, but the bureaucracy is not as easy. These works, however small you might consider them, are adding to the registered square metres of the property and often permissions are declined. A Certificate of Antiquity is the only document that can make these existing works accepted by the planning department at the Town Hall. 5: Underbuilds are not allowed to be used for living accommodation: Underbuilds with living accommodations are never done with the correct licences and again a Certificate of Antiquity/ Retrospective Licence is the only document that can prevent prosecution for any interior alterations done at the property or alterations that don’t meet the planning standards. Martinez de la Casa Architects always recommend their clients enquire at the Town Hall if the licence will be possible before jumping into expenses for doing projects, employing architects, etc). In case the building work has already been completed (applicable for all cases above) the document needed is a Certificate of Antiquity, also known as a Retrospective Licence. Once issued, this document acts as a licence, protecting the owner against possible sanctions from the Town Hall. It is highly recommended to avoid putting off potential buyers due to the existence of illegal extensions to the property. It will also be needed on completion of the sale in order to update the property’s description in Title Deeds & Land Registry. Only properly qualified and registered Spanish Architects are permitted to issue Retrospective Licences, so if your solicitors are studying your case, ask them to contact Martinez de la Casa Architects to provide the Antiquity Certificate and they will make the whole process easier, faster and cheaper with their fixed published prices and guaranteed deadlines. The cost of an Antiquity Certificate/Retrospective Licence for pools is 190€ +IVA and extensions or complete properties only 270€ +IVA. Discounts are available if you also require an Energy Performance Certificate (121€ IVA incl.), Habitation Licence (from 118€ IVA incl., but Registration Tax not included) or any other of their services, done at the same time. If you want to have your Retrospective Licence/Antiquity Certificate for your extension or pool now, in accordance with present laws and to protect against possible future changes in the laws that may affect you, Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment and guarantee the delivery of the Certificate of Antiquity within 10 working days after survey. With No Smoking Day upon us again, is it time to quit? When you stop smoking, there are two main issues you have to deal with – the physical craving and the psychological. Bioresonance will remove the physical craving, but psychological triggers are important to be aware of. An example would be when you would previously have smoked a cigarette, such as when having a coffee, or in social situations. These types of mental imprints take a while to fade from your memory. Positive Reinforcement Your first cigarette tasted awful – that is how the drug really tastes. The power of addiction to cigarettes has been stated to be similar to that of Heroin. Once in your system, your mind, combined with the addiction, tries to draw you back into smoking – which is why cigarettes seem to taste different now to the first one you tried. When you started smoking, you did not plan to do it for your entire life, I’m sure you saw a future with good health and energy ahead of you. However, your energy levels as a smoker are a third below that of a non-smoker. When you stop smoking, your body will undergo a transformation as the tar and nicotine in your bloodstream disappears. It is never too late to get fit and healthy, and in a short period of time you will have a better sense of smell, taste, have better skin, and will have beaten the demon cigarettes. Achieve Success Bioresonance Stop Smoking therapy has a 90% success rate. Nicotine patches and gum have a 15% success rate, hypnosis 30%, and going ‘cold turkey’ has just a 5% success rate. E-Cigs are popular, but there is little evidence they help smokers stop. They usually contain nicotine, and harmful substances including Glycol, which is the principal component of antifreeze! We offer smoking cessation and weight loss therapy, which is non-invasive and will remove the cravings and toxins from the body. A View From The Top
Brexit and Health Care.
I have been thinking long and hard about how our life could be changed after the calamity that is Brexit has taken place... There, if you didn't know where I stand you do now! Like many permanent residents of this lovely country... I/we are happy and settled and have been for almost twenty years ...the first portion of those years my family were covered by Health Care Insurance ...as time moved on the children flew the nest and worked within the system here in Spain and reduced the financial burden on the family purse via payments into the state system. Along came Father Time and I reached British pensionable age and took advantage of the S1 arrangement to transfer my health care entitlement to Spain. My concern, as I expect is the concern of many British retirees, is that something will happen and our health care will be placed in doubt. I have heard the argument that "Spain could not afford to lose our contribution"...so here are some figures to be getting on with as reported to a House of Commons select committee on Health in 2017. At this hearing a Top Civil Serpent stated that: Claimants using the S1 procedure at this time (2017) numbered 70,000 people in Spain ...44,000 people in Ireland ...43,000 people in France and 12,000 people in Cyprus. Spain, it was reported, charges an average of 3,500€ per pensioner via S1 ...Ireland charges an average of 7,500€ per pensioner and in total across the scheme (other countries) the UK paid out 500 million (pounds) at £2,300 per pensioner for health care. The Top Civil Serpent went on to say that these figures were significantly lower continued

An amazing story has come to light concerning a 94 year old British pensioner John Catt. John is a peace activist, a life long peace activist, a man who started his peace campaigning way back in 1948. John stresses that he is a non violent protester who during his lifetime has only ever used his right to Democratic protest in the name of peace. John was shocked when it came to light that the British police had as many as 66 individual records of John's activities over a number of years. He (John) was labelled by the British police as a "Domestic Extremist" and some of his so called crimes were recorded as attending a Trade Union conference in 2006 and, horror of horror, attending The Labour Party conference in 2007. John took his appeal against the police having 66 recorded records of him on file to the British Supreme Court ...surprise surprise, the British Supreme Court ruled against his request to have his record expunged from police records. Undaunted John took his case to the European Court of Human Rights who have just ruled in his favour that "Retaining Police records on John Catt could not be justified"... John Catt has never been convicted of any offence and that "His risk of violent criminality was remote". However, the most damming comment from the European Court was that "The judges said that they were concerned that the British police had no clear definition of what constituted "Domestic Extremism". When I read the story of John Catt's fight to clear his
QF Focus Magazine name I could not but wonder at the amount of recorded individual records that could be held on me. I like John and indeed like thousands of ordinary British people have attended many Union Conferences, have been active in politics and have never and will never be afraid to rail against what I see as unfairness in Society... It's called exercising your Democratic right to protest. The next time anyone tells you that people’s rights are safe under the British state ...think about John Catt.
QF Focus Magazine than the cost would have been had the pensioners been treated in the UK. Whilst researching these figures I came across a couple of other salient numbers regarding Britain and the European Union ...namely in the year 2016/2017 the figures available show that the British Budget spend was in the order of 772 billion pounds of which 9 billion was the UK's payment to the EU ...this represents just over 1.16% of the budget ...another figure worth viewing is that if the UK due to Brexit has its international credit rating changed (revised down) then the extra interest payments will total more than the annual EU payment. I expect Brexit for many is confusing ...for me however I will never understand why I was denied a vote in the 2016 referendum ...I will never know how to answer a question from younger people when they ask "Why are we denied the rights that you old people had and so wantonly threw away in our name".
Led By Donkeys.
Some wonderful roadside posters are being placed by a group calling themselves "Led By Donkeys". The roadside posters relate to the politicians who led the vote leave campaign ...can anyone ever believe a politician again ....here goes. John Redwood - 17th July 2016 - (Tory) - "Getting out of the EU can be quick and easy - the UK holds most of the cards". Leave UK - 1st March 2017 - "They said business would flee if we voted leave, but instead we're seeing great British innovators like Dyson investing in the UK's future". Dyson has declared he is moving his head office, his electric car company and his tax base to the Far East. Michael Gove - 9th April 2016- (Tory) - "The day after we vote to leave, we hold all the cards and we can choose the path we want". Reflect Dear Reader as Britain takes its place in the world of 2019.

Be Thankful EVERY Day! Did anything good happen to you in the last 24 hours? I mean something monumental ... something you're so thankful for that you felt like breaking out in song? Go ahead, review your day. Celebrate each precious gift we have‌.take nothing for granted. I'm sure that you get my point. Each day, we have dozens of reasons to be thankful, yet, we generally take these things for granted and fail to see them as precious items to be cherished. Of course, when any one of them is taken from us, even temporarily, we sit up and take notice. But, day in and day out, we rarely consider our blessings. 1. Try to think about the positive things in your life daily. The key is to develop a habit of focusing on things you are grateful for. 2. Mention your gratitude. During conversations at work and at home, express your appreciation for all of the good things and people in your life. Express your gratitude to supportive friends and family members. Perhaps call someone and let them know how much you value their support. 3. Avoid concentrating on difficulties. When problems arise and you've done all you can to remedy them, train your mind to bring your attention back to your blessings. This helps you to keep things in perspective. When you are relaxed and experiencing positive emotions, you stand a far better chance of coming up with solutions to your difficulties. 4. Lift others in need. One of the best ways to use your gifts (health, energy, attitude, etc.) is to share them with others who are having a rough time. Can you lend a helping hand to a co-worker, friend, relative or other person in your community? Merely spending time with someone in need, or giving a few words of encouragement can make a tremendous difference to that person, while helping you to develop a deeper sense of gratitude about how well-off you are. It costs you nothing to be grateful and appreciative, yet it has a considerable impact on the quality of your life. So, don't waste another minute. Every day, reflect on the priceless gifts you've been enjoying. Openly share your gratitude with others. The next time somebody asks if anything good happened to you today, you'll have plenty to say! Take Care‌Until the next time!

Have you lost or had your Passport stolen abroad? Here’s what to do. Having your passport stolen or losing it whilst on holiday or even if you live here can be a nightmare, but it’s not as difficult to replace as you might think. The process can seem daunting at first but given direction you can have a replacement within 6 weeks.
To start, you’ll need to report it stolen to your local police station in your area and get a document to declare it lost or stolen. After that you need to fill in your application form online. In Spain you have to apply online, you cannot use paper forms anymore or apply in person. Before you apply, you’re asked to supply your passport issue date, this is not essential to your application but will speed up the process considerably. All supporting documents that are not in English, like the police report for example, are requested to be translated fully into English before sending along with your application. The Card & Gift shop offer a translation service here in the shop for a small fee. All translations are official. The LS01 is also an essential supporting document to send alongside the online application, you can print these off online or have them supplied to you by us. All this seem like too much hassle? The Card & Gift Shop in Quesada offers a fully comprehensive renewal or replacement passport service for only 29€ per person, or 50€ per couple. The service includes: Full completion of the online forms and any other supporting documents needed, certified and approved passport photos taken and printed here in the shop and an insured and secured courier service to the U.K. We can also receive the new passport back at the shop for you and we will contact you as soon as it arrives free of charge. If you’d like any more information about this complete service, give us a call on 96 671 8684 for any queries or to arrange an appointment. It’s best not to delay reporting it lost or stolen to the police and getting a replacement as in Spain it’s a legal requirement to have photo ID on you at all times. The total cost for a replacement passport is the same as a renewal, 105.86 Pounds Sterling. You pay £86.00 for the passport, and then Her Majesty’s Passport Office adds an additional £19.86 for the overseas return courier. See our advert on page 4 for more information.

Quesada Bowls Club Report
Sponsored by
by Dee Stephenson
This month, our bowlers have been blessed with exceptionally mild and sunny weather as the winter season progresses. In addition to the league games the Club Championship competition drew to a close with the finals played at the beginning of February. After some close and competitive matches, the results were: Mixed Rinks - won by Terry Morgan, Claire Dye, Colin Highland and Peter Farrell Mixed Triples - won by Mel Highland, Peter Morgan and Jason Prokopowycz Ladies Pairs - won by Violet Campbell and Sandra Heath Mens Pairs - won by George Carnell and Graham Phillips Mixed Pairs - won by Jacqui Johnston and Graham Phillips Ladies Singles - won by Mel Highland Mens Singles - won by Terry Morgan Well done to all of the finalists and congratulations to the winners. Some of our bowlers were also involved in the England vs Wales competition for the John Cooper Memorial plaque held at San Luis Bowls Club on 10 February. A lovely sunny Sunday morning, there was a great turnout of both bowlers and supporters and the match was followed by a delicious Sunday lunch. As always there was plenty of well-natured rivalry on the greens. England won on 4 rinks, drew on one rink and lost on one rink winning the match 4.5 points to 1.5 points with the shots 113-82. Pictured: The highest winning rink for England, left to right: Suzi Cooper, Dee Stephenson, Dennis Jackson and Arthur Brown.
In terms of Quesada performance in the leagues our squads have had some mixed results during February - here’s the highlights: In the Southern League Division A, the Swallows have moved back up to 5th place after some good wins. In Division B the Swifts are really performing well and their wins in February mean they maintained 2nd place in the league. However, La Siesta Golds are only one point behind, so watch this space.... Quesada’s Winter League squad have had some success and whilst still in 5th place, they’re now only one point behind San Miguel, so plenty to play for. Finally, in the South Alicante Winter League Enterprise Division, the Pearls are still enjoying some good results and have moved up to 3rd place in the league, but San Miguel Beagles are hot on their heels only 2 points behind. So the Pearls will need to dig deep and keep up the good work to hold on to their place. At Quesada Bowls Club we welcome both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard by email: newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk.

Aloo Gobi – Potato and Cauliflower Curry After falling out of favour the humble cauliflower has once again become fashionable with supermarkets and restaurants now offering cauli-rice, cauliflower steaks and cauliflower pizza crust. According to Mark Twain he’s quoted as saying ‘Cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education’. This always makes me chuckle as cauliflower curry is one of the most common and basic dishes in the Punjabi repertoire. Potatoes form the backbone of this humble dish. It’s best to add the potatoes and briefly cook them before adding the cauliflower. Most people tend to discard the stem and leaves and just use the florets – try to use as much of the cauliflower, as the stem and outer leaves chopped finely add another dimension to the dish. Ingredients 3 tablespoons oil 1 cauliflower, cut into florets 2 medium potatoes, bite size chunks 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 medium onions, chopped 1 inch ginger, chopped ½ canned chopped tomatoes
1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon turmeric ½ teaspoon black pepper teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon garam masala 2 chopped chillies (optional) Chopped fresh coriander to garnish
QF Focus Magazine Recipe - In a large saucepan heat the oil to a medium heat; once hot, add the cumin seeds, cook until they start to crack and turn a golden colour. Add the onion and garlic cook for about five minutes or until golden brown. - Add the fresh ginger, along with the tinned tomatoes. Mix and cook for a couple of minutes. - Next stir in the spices, turmeric, salt, garam masala, black pepper and fresh chillies. Cook for 1 minute. - Add the potatoes mix well. Stirring occasionally; cover and cook for about 10 minutes. - Add the cauliflower mix well. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until the vegetables are tender. If the vegetables begin to stick to the bottom of the pan – add a splash or two of cold water. - Once cooked check seasoning. Garnish with coriander and serve with naan or chapatti and plain yoghurt. Quirónsalud Torrevieja brings in a New Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Medicine Team Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja adds a new Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Medicine team to its services. The team will be coordinated by renowned physicians José Salvador and José Antonio Robles, specialists with ample experience in the field of plastic surgery and in the introduction of the newest cutting-edge techniques, with over 15,000 treatments performed. In Spain, around 400,000 aesthetic surgery interventions are performed each year, according to data from the Sociedad Española de Cirugía Plástica, Reparadora y Estética [Spanish Association for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery]. 83% of these interventions are requested by women, and 17% by men, though, as Doctor Salvador, Plastic Surgeon at Quirónsalud Torrevieja, points out, “We have experienced a higher demand for this type of intervention from men in the past few years, since barely three years ago, they did not account for even 12%”. The increase in this type of surgery that we have seen in the past decade has been motivated mainly by the development of new techniques, that are less invasive and safer for the patient, as well as better qualification on the part of specialists. Regarding the latter point, Doctor José Salvador advises verifying that a surgeon is certified as a specialist in this type of surgeries, by referring to official associations such as, in this case, the SECPRE [Spanish acronym for the Spanish Association for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery], before undergoing any kind of intervention. As for the elements that make aesthetic surgeries increasingly safer, the specialist notes “A growing use of local anaesthesia or sedation, with which we avoid the risks of using anaesthetic products; greater quality and control of prosthesis and fillers; and finally the introduction of the latest generation of laser, with more effective and safer results”. Notwithstanding the type of surgery the patient will undergo, he or she must always submit to different tests to check his or her health before the operation. “The performance of a blood test, an electrocardiogram and a heart examination is essential if we want to undergo an intervention with every safety guarantee,” warns Doctor Salvador. The Importance of Looking Good to Feel Better The specialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja highlight the importance of feeling good about our personal image, and how it affects our physical and mental health. “In addition to greatly increasing the self-esteem of patients, it influences the people in their own environment, provides them emotional equilibrium, and has repercussions on their physical well-being.” explains Doctor Salvador. As for the parts of the body people request to change the most, among women it is the breasts, with breast enlargement surgery taking first place, followed by liposuction and breast elevation and reduction. For men, the most requested intervention is not all that different, since it is the elimination of gynaecomastia (enlargement of the mammary gland), followed by liposuction and rhinoplasty. The time of the year these interventions are most in demand are the months before the summer season, with three out of every ten interventions happening during this period. According to Doctor Salvador, “The desire to show off a great body in the summer and the impossibility of sunbathing or swimming for a period after these operations, make these months the most adequate to have them performed”. Book Review by Ivor Kindle
Book title: A Walk in the Woods Author: Bill Bryson Publisher: Black Swan
Bill Bryson is recognised by many as the foremost travel writer in today's market...Over the past few months I have been reading his work as a break from reading shall we say more serious stuff. This book entails Bill Bryson and a friend deciding to take to the woods and walk the World's longest recreational footpath. The Appalachian Trail stretches along the East Coast of the United States, from Georgia to Maine. The Appalachian Trail is almost 2,200 miles in length and includes both mountain terrain ...rivers ...valleys and any number of wild animals including Black and Brown bears. This book is a wonderful tale of boyish derring do. Written with great humour this book took me back to my childhood days reminding me of the sheer joy and freedom of outdoor life. A great travel story written with detail and charm.
...Keep reading, Ivor Kindle.

Help Vega Baja supporting families & friends of people with drug and alcohol addictions Someone’s drug or alcohol addiction can impact on the health and well-being of family and friends, as well as their own. People close to a drug or alcohol user often find themselves caught up in the trauma of addiction; helplessness, isolation and feelings of desperation are very common. Addiction is sometimes referred to as a “family disease” as a family member’s addiction often affects the entire family unit. Family and friends can get so caught up in trying to help and care for the addict that they forget to care for themselves. It can be difficult for loved ones to reach out for support, but it is one of the most important things families can do not only for themselves but also for their addicted loved one.

HELP Vega Baja’s new support group – D.A.F.F.S (Drug and Alcohol Friends and Family Support) aims to support family and friends. POP IN FOR A CUPPA AT AGE CONCERN Age Concern is renowned for offering a vast range of welfare services and vital assistance to people in need. People contact us for a whole host of reasons and usually it is physical help, mobility assistance or provision of equipment. However, it is little known that we care for people in other ways. Loneliness can be just as debilitating as a physical problem. So, so many ex-pats living in Spain for many years, sadly, lose their nearest and dearest. Loving families are many miles away, neighbours, although caring, have friends or commitments and cannot always be to hand when you just need a little conversation. For males and females of all ages, Age Concern could fill the gap between living 24/7 alone or enjoying a bit of company with people in similar situations. At our Day Centre at Calle Paganini, La Siesta every day between 10am and 1.30pm Monday to Friday, we have our pop-in tea or coffee mornings. There you will be welcomed by one of our many volunteers, have a one to-one chat about any subject you wish - the weather, the price of fish or a subject close to your heart in strict confidence. You may want to just pick up a newspaper and sit with a coffee, catch up on all the latest news or complete a crossword. But mainly relax in comfortable surroundings and although the main aim is to make friends, many regular visitors browse the greeting cards stand or treat themselves to an inexpensive piece of hand crafted jewellery. A huge selection of books, jigsaws and games are available to purchase at exceptionally low prices. The biggest personal advantage is the fact you will have the opportunity of mixing with people, chatting, laughing and generally enjoying their company, in your own time and when you feel ready join in. Age Concern hold regular weekly Bingo, Rummikub, Knitting club sessions in the afternoons as well as classes to learn the Spanish language. All through the year day trips and evening events are organised. Taking that first step to walk through the door can be daunting, but once inside you may find a wealth of fun, which may be lacking in your life. If lack of transport restricts you from visiting, dependant on where you live, one of our vehicles may be able to collect you and take you back to your home. Loneliness isn’t restricted to people on the other side of 50 years old, so even if you haven’t reached that golden age yet the Age Concern coffee mornings may turn out to be the gateway to a more fulfilling life. If you feel you would appreciate some further information regarding our Day Centre and all that it holds and can offer, you can telephone 96 678 6887 in office hours to have your apprehension allayed.

San Miguel Golf Society visits Age Concern
Golf Captain, Tony Smale, from the San Miguel Golf Society recently visited the Day Centre of Age Concern in La Siesta to present a Event cash donation of 200€ to President, Maureen Payne. This extremely welcomed donation will go towards the upkeep of the vehicles and all the wealth of services provided for the over 50s on the Southern Costa Blanca.
Tony, accompanied by his wife Wendy, enjoyed a refreshing cup of tea and chatted with some of the regulars at the Day Centre who mostly live alone and visit to expand their social lives by talking and laughing with other like minded people. The San Miguel Golf Society, one of the most established and longest running Golf Clubs, boasts a membership of 160 members who raise funds by dropping some money into a tin, which they call a ‘Blob Tin’. When the tin has reached capacity, members make the decision to which well deserving charity should be the recipients of a donation, and Age Concern where highly delighted to be chosen on this occasion. All information on any of the services provided by Age Concern can be obtained by either telephoning 96 678 6887 or popping into the Centre at Calle Paganini, La Siesta, Monday – Friday between 10am and 1.30pm.
Gran Alacant Oldies Walking Football Club 17 February saw attendance records smashed when 21 players turned up to join in with our Thursday session. With this in mind, we are now looking at extending our playing time to 1½ hours, when necessary, still starting at 12 noon, so that everyone gets plenty of playing time.
We now contribute over 650€ to the sports centre and Town Hall with our sessions here on GA and competitive games held in Santa Pola. To date, two of these home matches have been held at the Pereira Stadium in Santa Pola. Both have been won by a 2 nil scoreline. The Hondon game goals were scored by Gary Beeney and Tim Litherland and in the game against San Miquel the goal scorers were Gary Beeney and David Lamb. 14 of the Thursday regulars made themselves available for the second game giving us 9 players on the pitch plus 7 substitutes cheering on from the sidelines. After both games we met at the smashing Tango Bar in Santa Pola, where we all congregate after the games for a buffet and drinks.

Hi All! Wow! March already, and spring just around the corner. I’m looking forward to putting the heater away and getting back to warmer evenings. The many entertainers based here on the South Costa Blanca provide us all with a great variety of musical performances. One such artist is Billy Rich. Billy has had a lifelong passion for Swing Music, particularly the songs performed by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr, amongst others. This interest led him to singing these numbers for friends and family at parties and gatherings. On receiving great encouragement from his wife and family, Billy was persuaded to try his luck semi-professionally. He began performing at Care Homes and smaller venues in order to build his confidence. This was achieved in a very short space of time, due to the reaction and positive feedback he received from his audiences. After retiring from a career in the retail and wholesale fashion clothing industry, Billy decided to embark on a new venture as a professional entertainer, now being able to give the entertainment business his full attention, as opposed to a part time hobby. His performing ability saw him working in pubs, lounge bars, clubs and restaurants. Also at weddings, christenings, birthdays and anniversaries.
After working successfully on the UK circuit and recording his first CD, Billy Rich decided to relocate to Spain. In a relatively short time he has firmly established himself here on the local circuit of Torrevieja and the surrounding areas. Recently he expanded his repertoire greatly. Not only does he perform Rat Pack and Swing style songs, but he now covers popular songs from across the decades. From the 1950s to present day, as well as also performing musical sets that feature Reggae, Ska, and Country and Western music. You can find him on Facebook (Billy Rich) or alternatively keep an eye on the local media for his up Bye for now, D.P. and coming performances.

Hair Colour trends for 2019! So for this month’s article it is a MUST that we speak about the new colour trends that are in fashion for 2019 and that all of the celebs are already rocking and you should be to! Let’s check out 2 of the most wanted hair colours which also have the highest numbers of searches on Google at the moment. ASH BROWN Fed up of having dark hair and only thinking about wanting to go blonde but you know it’s going to take many appointments to achieve this? Well ASH BROWNS are totally in now. This can be achieved with babby lights on the midlength and ends of your hair and then applying an ash brown to remove the brassy tones that have been left from lightening the hair. Try typing into Google ‘Ash Brown’ and check it out for yourself! LIVING CORAL Fancy some colour in your life? This colour is AMAZING! You can either choose to go brighter or more pastel. Some people are choosing to either wear it more orange and others more pink. This colour is a lot easier to achieve if you already have a blonde based hair colour. Also a colour mask can be made up for you to use at home in between appointments to keep it looking its best. Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad. Heartbreakers with romantic front
VALENTINE’S Day continues to be a huge business around the globe with cards, chocolates, soft toys, and bottles of fizz flying out of the shops – there’s even a seasonal jump in the cost of red roses – ‘cos we are all softies at heart ...apart from the bad guys. With all those Cupid’s arrows flying around it is also worth taking note that those looking for love can also get stung; remember, just like the song goes, every rose has its thorn. Thanks to the power of the internet and modern technology there’s been a sharp rise in ‘romance scams’. Action Fraud, the police crime reporting centre back in the UK, decided to release the latest statistics concerning ‘scams of the heart’ to coincide with Valentine’s Day; victims lost more than £50 million over 2018 and it is feared many more are out there with broken hearts and too embarrassed to admit they have been fleeced. Last year, there were a whopping 4,555 reports made to Action Fraud – including some from this part of the world – up 27% on 2017 and a police spokesman revealed the total was thought to be much higher as “many victims are thought to have suffered in secret”. And the average age of a victim is 50 and, sadly, 63% of losers are women; they also lose twice as much to the scam. The average loss per case is an eye-watering £11,145. Commander Karen Baxter, head of the City of London Police economic crime department said fraudsters trick victims into sending them money or gathered enough information to steal their identity. She warned people using dating websites in search of romance or friendship should be careful not to take everything at face value and get caught out by social media profiles; simply by trusting people too soon. “As cases of romance fraud increase each year, so too does the cost to victims, both emotionally and financially,” she said. “The emotional damage of falling victim to romance fraud can often be far more difficult to come to terms with.” In the words of Hill Street Blues: Be careful out there. Action Fraud said criminals trawl through profiles to piece together information about wealth and lifestyle to manipulate their targets. They cover their tracks by masking IP addresses and using unregistered phones; police advise people never to send money to someone they have not met and to be careful about posting information that could be used by scammers to manipulate or bribe. Election fever hits Spain SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has named Sunday 28 April as the day for a snap general election after failing to get his budget through parliament in Madrid – the third national ballot in four years. The minority socialist government has clung to power for more than eight months with the help of a ‘confidence and supply’ agreement with smaller regional parties, often with competing interests, a bit like back in the UK, with Tory souls dependent on the backing of the Democratic Unionist Party. However, despite an early promise to hold elections after coming to power last June, Mr Sanchez has managed to stay at the helm of the good ship Spain. The failure to get the financial Bill through came amidst rebellion by Catalonia politicians accusing the government of refusing to discuss independence and growing number of demonstrations in the capital demanding a ballot. The announcement rules out a ‘super Sunday’ of voting; the merry month of May already sees local town hall elections, regional and European elections. Crackerjack: classic kids’ TV is back! IT’S Friday, it’s five to five and it’s Crackerjack! The classic children’s television show returns after a 35-year gap promising to be ‘must see’ viewing for “today’s connected generation”. The madcap show is back on Fridays with duo Sam and Mark presenting – it originally ran from 1955 until 1984 and the chaos has been hosted by the likes of Eamonn Andrews, Leslie Crowther, Michael Aspel, Ed Stewart and Stu Francis; all ready to hand over the prized Crackerjack pencils. Hopefully, it will once again be essential viewing. Back in the day Crackerjack and Happy Days were the only things on the box worth skiving uni lectures for (sorry mum and dad) – now can we have the return of the anarchic Saturday morning hangover cure also known as Tizwas?

A Night at Crevillente Velodrome It was a drab, windy Tuesday evening in January and for our usual Tuesday training night we decided to head to Crevillente to try out the Velodrome which, although we all cycle past on a regular basis, none of us have been on before. We left the shop at 5.30pm sharp in 2 x vehicles and arrived at the Velodrome at 5.55pm got changed, took our bikes out and headed to the reception of the Sports centre. We showed our Spanish Cycling Licences and paid 2.60€ each to get on, we couldn’t believe how cheap it was. We cycled through the gate and had to carry our bikes down a flight of steps, under a tunnel and their it was, it looked huge. We couldn’t wait to get going so off we went in single file at first then as we found our rhythm we soon split up and we did our own thing. After 6 laps we were absolutely exhausted and couldn’t believe how tiring it actually was, we stopped and took a few pictures and spoke to the Junior Crevillente Mountain Bike Group who had just arrived. We also spoke to the guy in charge who asked us just to be careful and to respect the young children who were all under 8 years of age. This group were one of the groups responsible for securing the funding to build the Velodrome a few years ago and had made Tuesday and Thursday evenings their Club training nights. It was now completely dark but the floodlights were on meaning we could stay as long as we liked. We continued lapping round the track going faster and faster each time, respecting the safety of the kids, we were also starting to get higher and higher at each end. After an hour we stopped and decided to time each other a few times to see who could do the fastest lap. This was brilliant and we were all at maximum effort for the complete lap, we then went into a 6 man team and did the Velodrome proper with the leader going high at the ends until the team passed through when he then dropped down onto the back of the pack. After a few laps we all did our own thing again for about another 30 mins, during the night we all did between 65-80 laps of the track which is 330m long. This was a great night and a great way to let of steam and very, very physically demanding, an hour on here is as good as doing 100k on the flat. We found it hard work and we had gears, the professionals don’t have gears so god knows how tough that must be. We are all like little kids and are looking forward to going back again soon. If anyone is interested in going, it is definitely worth a visit but please note that you do require to have a current Spanish Cycling Licence. Team “Cyclogical” meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 5.30pm and Sunday mornings at 8am and cover between 90km and 120kms at a moderate to fast pace. So, if you fancy a challenge, looking to improve your fitness, riding ability and speed and also have a new group of friends to train with then why not come along and give it a try or call Gary on 637 487 377.

Forthcoming Events By Keith Nicol It is hard to believe that it is March already and with that comes three major dates for your diary: Saint Patrick’s Day, San Jose or the Spanish Father’s Day, and Expo Torrevieja. Let’s start with that most Irish of days, Saint Patrick’s Day which this year falls on Sunday 17 March. The place to be is Cabo Roig on the Orihuela Costa where one of Europe’s largest Saint Patrick’s Day parades takes place. With an estimated 10,000 visitors descending on the area it is Spain’s largest Saint Patrick’s Day event with festivities starting around 2pm, with the parade getting underway at 3pm. Along with marching bands and dancers and Saint Patrick himself of course, there will be classic cars and motorbikes leading off the procession and everyone is welcome, because today is the day when everyone has a chance to wear green and feel Irish.
QF Focus Magazine on display along with other craft works to browse and enjoy. Also on the 1st Sunday of each month is the Ace Cafe Classic Car event, on the street outside La Torre Hotel in Los Montesinos from 11am to 1pm. Admission is free. Kids of all ages are invited to attend the Torrellano Miniature Steam Train. It is run by the Friends of the Railways Association and so is normally only open on Saturdays between 4pm and 8pm with Miniature Train Rides during February and March on the 2nd Sunday from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Every month the Friends of the Railways Association host a miniature train event at the railway museum in Torrellano. Donations of 1.50€ per visit are requested. Putting the city of Torrevieja firmly on the map as a new event location is Expo Torrevieja V. This Springs event takes place once again at the International Auditorium. The event is the Premier international lifestyle event on the southern Costa Blanca in one of the most beautiful locations.
Two days later on Tuesday 19 March it is San Jose, a Spanish Red Day to celebrate Father’s day. Falling on a Tuesday this usually means that many Spanish companies will close for a long weekend which in turn means that Saint Patrick’s Day itself, and the location of the parade, will probably be very busy. If gastronomy is your thing then there are a number of tapas routes and gastronomy events taking place during the month. This includes events in Santa Pola, Crevillente and Pilar de la Horadada to name but a few. Walking Football fever is now taking off and those 50 and over who fancy kicking a ball around again, ladies included, can now take part in walking football. One of the more popular spots for the sport is Los Montesinos on a Tuesday morning at 10am. It all helps us work of those kilos and stay fit. There are at least another dozen local teams, with most of them advertising their playing times in local bar windows. During the winter the The Craft Market at the Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales is open on the 1st Sunday of each month in the morning from 11am to 2pm. It’s is a fun place to visit if you are looking for a small gift, piece of art or decoration. Local artists put their work
With over 60 exhibitors plus a special section for clubs and associations, a display of fencing, fundraising for Rock Against Cancer, ticket sales for local events such as An Evening with Paul Young and a somewhat unique performance of ‘Allo Allo’ by the Adhoc Players, weather permitting a display of classic cars, motorbikes and scooters on the Sunday morning, it promises to be one of the top events in the calendar in Torrevieja. With more than 8000 visitors expected over Saturday 9 March and Sunday 10 March, it is the largest non-street event in the city of salt. There is car parking for around 500 cars and both admission and car parking are free. Everyone is welcome to the event and there will be a live broadcast from Big FM. Information, a glimpse into the local movie making scene, a fabulous custom build chopper motorcycle to have your photograph taken with and many other attractions at the show. More info from their Facebook page or www.ExpoTorrevieja.com. All information is correct at the time of going to print. We advise you to check for any changes which are beyond our control.
