Make sure you are not under insured I have always said that the Spanish are way ahead when it comes to traumatic weather occurrences by charging a small percentage on your policy which goes to the Consortio. This is a government controlled body, set up to provide cover for extreme, unusual conditions, such as recently experienced with very high rainfall, which caused large areas of damage and flooding on the Costa Blanca. The Consortio takes full control in these situations and this is totally separate and independent from your insurance provider or agent, and as such, results in no claims against your own policy. Please be aware however, that you will only be covered to the limits that you are actually insured for. If you are claiming contents of 50,000€ and your insured contents cover is only for 20,000€, the Consortio will work from the amount you are insured for. But the process can be very slow, particularly when a large area is designated a disaster zone and it takes time for the consortium to put everything and everyone into place to deal with the claims. I know this can be distressing and very frustrating, but when you have thousands of claims to handle and resolve, it will take time. Please be aware that the consortium and assessors will only respond to Spanish telephone numbers – they are unable to call outside of the country. There are always exceptions, and for the Expats, primarily it is UK plated cars, insured in Spain, which do not contribute to the Consortio and this then reverts to the insurance company, where you may find you are not covered at all. In my various articles and on my Sound Advice programme on Bay Radio, I am always warning about being under insured. It is at times like these that you really appreciate what that means and being with a good insurance company is vital. The contents amount of your policy should always be your choice but you do need to get it right. I always say – check your policy, don't assume or take the verbal word that everything is exactly the same, and don't go by price alone. Call one of my consultants for a fully comprehensive, tailor made home policy quotation to protect yourself and your home.

Jaguars on the Prowl Wednesday 16 October was the day chosen for the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club J.E.C Costa Blanca region of Spain to hold our meeting in the south, so members of the club residing in the north travelled down the motorway to arrive at our meeting point. Dennis Wilson handed out a information sheet informing members of the route we would be taking, just incase we lost someone en route, as this took us down country lanes and even alongside of a canal which didn’t have any barriers to protect one of the big cats deciding to take a quick dip, but they all behaved purr-fectly! While passing a parked police car with an officer sitting inside, he politely acknowledged and waved to each vehicle that drove past him as he smiled in bewilderment. After driving through a number of very pretty Spanish villages we finally arrived at our destination in Rojales, then parked the big cats in a car park at La Marquuesa Golf club where more Jaguars had already arrived directly. Members made their way to the club house restaurant where luncheon had been arranged for 65 members and their guests. An enjoyable meal and refreshments were served by very pleasant staff who went out of their way to accommodate all our requirements making it a super day of fun and laughter. If you would like to join the JEC club please contact Michael Brook (President) on 640 866 711 or jec-costablanca on Facebook. Written by Sandra Brook.

I’ve had a month constantly being at the vets with our poorly pup. After many tests and examinations we now have an answer to his illness although the prognosis isn’t good and he will have to be on medication for the rest of his life, at least now we know what we are dealing with. He has lost so much weight that we now have the battle of trying to get him to gain a few kilos….wish I had the same weight problem! Having recently returned from a weekend break in the UK, I feel like I’m more organised for Christmas than I ever have been. The majority of Christmas presents for our family in England have been bought, wrapped and left for Santa to deliver. And I have even made a start on our kids presents. This has never been known for me as I always leave things to the last minute, so I actually feel quite pleased with myself. I am going to go all out to get everything done and dusted a couple of weeks before Christmas, but knowing me I will still be wrapping up presents late on Christmas Eve as always. We are now coming close to the deadline for the Autumn / Winter Professional Services magazine so if you want your business included in the next issue, get in touch now before it's too late as space is filling up quickly. Congratulations to Susan Rissen from Barbarroja who won last month's 50€ competition after spotting the logo on page 25. See if you can spot the logo in this issue for a chance to win 50€, see inside for details of how to enter. Good luck!

Skin preparation The temperature has slowly begun to drop taking us into November. It's really important to hydrate your skin to avoid dryness as the colder months approach us. Preparing the face and skin before makeup is vital and should be part of your daily routine, this will help you to get a natural, flawless, and radiant look. Skincare and makeup shouldn't be treated as two entirely separate things because when used together, that's when your base looks its best. Before applying makeup, you should understand the skin very well, because without knowing the skin type, you will not be able to get the best and efficient results. Before applying makeup, wash your skin with a gentle cleanser that will support your skin type. If you have dry skin, look for a cream cleanser, which will help moisturise the skin while cleansing. Use a gel or foam cleanser if you have oily skin. Another important step is toning your face with an alcohol free toner, it gets rid of any excess dirt left on the skin’s surface. Moisturising the skin is necessary when applying makeup because otherwise your skin will be left looking dry and therefore, your makeup will not be looking flawless. It is also important to keep your lips moisturised by using lip balm as it stops them from cracking. Primer is not necessary, but you will want to use it for many reasons. Primer fills in small imperfections, pores, small lines and wrinkles. It also allows your makeup to stay on longer as it creates a sticky base. It’s recommended that you exfoliate your skin once or twice a week to get rid of any build up on your skin. By following all these steps, you will be able to achieve a natural, glowing look. How can EX-PATS avoid Inheritance Tax in Spain between spouses and subsequently, their children? If you are a Spanish resident then unlike the UK, there are Inheritance taxes between spouses. Granted, you get a €100,000 allowance so, simply, if you have joint assets sited in Spain worth over €200,000 then there will be inheritance tax to pay by the surviving spouse of a married couple. Not only does the tax need to be paid by the surviving spouse but there will be the huge inconvenience of half of the joint assets, such as cash in bank accounts, being frozen until the tax is assessed and paid even if it is zero. The Inheritance tax rates for a spouse in the Valencian region run from 7.65% to 34% depending on the amount over €100,000 being inherited. So what can you do to avoid a frozen asset? You can contact me at Blacktower and depending on your financial situation I would be likely to recommend: • an investment bond written as a life assured bond between both spouses. When either spouse dies first the bond continues as if nothing has happened, nothing gets frozen and there are no liabilities to the Tax department. • Once you have both died and your beneficiaries are resident in the UK and you have a UK law of succession clause in your Spanish Will, then they will inherit the bond inheritance tax free also. This can be structured to either payout upon both deaths or continue making money for your children. The bonds have lots of other benefits too, and some product providers offer a fixed rate of return in both Sterling or Euros (Currently Sterling 3.5% per annum Net, or Euros 2.6% per annum Net) which is substantially better than the banks are offering. All money is held outside of Spain even though they are Spanish compliant and internally they do all the tax reporting for you which removes another problem. These, (and/or other products) can only be offered by regulated advisers such as us, because we have to assess which is the right product for you and your family circumstances. For this reason they cannot be bought off the shelf directly from product providers and the minimum bond size is £20,000 or €25,000. The Ultimate Easy Guide to Building Licences in Spain

In the UK, licences are pretty straightforward and easy, allowing the building of minor extensions or other buildings with a simple and basic process. However, that doesn’t happen in Spain and all building work needs one of the following three types of licences. Major Building Work Licence Required whenever there is: ·Extensions either attached or detached, such as garages, work sheds, etc. ·Any building work that implies building a roof with over 1.5mts height. ·Any structural building work inside or outside the property, such as putting new beams, structural repairs, knocking down loadbearing walls. ·Any internal change of layouts, such as making rooms, kitchens or toilets bigger or smaller, subdividing rooms etc. ·Pools - Even small or fibreglass ones. Major building work licences always need to be signed off by a qualified architect and the paperwork required is usually vast. The process can be long and bumpy. Town halls take months to issue the licence and they also require that the builder is qualified and registered.

Minor Building Work Licences Minor building work licences are those needed to do any building work that doesn’t imply structure, doesn’t increase the build size of the property or doesn’t involve a roof, for example, tiling, repairing, cladding, plumbing, electricity etc. They are generally easy and cheap to obtain. Retrospective Licence/Certificate of Antiquity This is can be obtained whenever the property has been extended, altered or had a pool built without a proper building licence (prior to building).

To be able to obtain a Retrospective Licence / Certificate of Antiquity, the building work needs to meet two conditions: A. It has never been challenged by any Spanish Authority B. It has been built with over certain years, depending on each region: ·Alicante: The extension or pool needs to have been completed before August of 2010 (minimum aprox 9 years). ·Murcia: The extension or pool needs to be over four years old. ·Almeria: The extension or pool needs to be over six years old. By having a Retrospective Licence/ Antiquity Certificate, building work already done becomes unobjectionable for the authorities. ·Vendors use it to avoid putting off potential buyers, due to the existence of undeclared or unlicensed building work. ·The Certificate of Antiquity is also the document needed at the Notary to update the Title Deeds (Escritura) with any alterations introduced to the property. Martinez de la Casa Architects is one of the most prominent and respectable practices in the area, providing all types of certificates and licences, amongst other services. We are the Number 1 company in EPC Certificates (121€ inc IVA) and Number 1 for Antiquity Certificates (pools 229€ inc IVA, extensions 326€ inc IVA) and Habitation Licences (from 118€ inc IVA, Town Hall tax not included, depending on each municipality).

The clock is ticking and the Spanish tax man is awaiting the deadline Can you imagine the following scenario? You are driving your car along a Spanish one-way system. From out of nowhere, a Guardia Civil officer steps into the road, right arm up, left arm pointing at you to pull over… You love Spain, you bought a home in this country and pay taxes here. What can be wrong? Several minutes later you get a ticket (€1500) because you had not realised that your car insurance had expired. An innocent overlook, perhaps, but this reason will not be enough to avoid the ticket. This is exactly what could happen if you missed the deadline to pay your non-resident tax. Please read through this article that we’ve written to help you understand how non-resident taxes work. What group are you in? If you bought property in Spain you find yourself within one of the following three groups: 1. Investor, renting out (not having a Spanish residency card) 2. Holiday homeowner (not having a Spanish residency card) 3. Permanent homeowner (having a Spanish residency card) If you’re within groups 1 and/or 2… keep reading please! Are you a Spanish fiscal resident? You are a Spanish fiscal resident if: You live more than 183 days per calendar year on Spanish territory (even if you hadn’t previously applied for a Spanish residency card).

Otherwise, you are considered a fiscal non-resident. However, both non-resident and resident property owners in Spain are obliged to file annual income tax returns, as the Spanish tax system operates through self-assessment. What is the Spanish tax year? The fiscal tax year in Spain begins on the 1st January and ends on the 31st December. Spanish fiscal non-resident annual tax returns are declared in arrears the following year. How much tax will you have to pay? There are two main categories here: Non-residents of Spain and tax residents in non-EU member states

Page 9 or non-EEA countries are required to declare income earned in Spain at a general rate of 24% (19% on capital gains). Non-residents of Spain and tax residents of an EU member state or EEA country with an effective exchange of tax information with Spain, will be charged a Spanish income tax rate of 19%. In either category, the general rule for fiscal non-residents is that tax is based on their: gross Spanish source of notional income (benefit of having an asset), net rental income of Spanish property and on capital gains arising from assets located in Spain. If you are a non-resident and owner of a Spanish property, what taxes should you pay? Before we dive into it, there is an important rule you should keep in mind. When property is owned by more than one person, each person will be an independent tax payer who will have to declare separate tax returns. The notional or rental income tax amount will depend on the use of the property: A) Notional income tax on properties in private use Let’s say you were not the owner of the property during the whole year. In which case, you would only pay notional income tax that would be applied over the period where you were the actual owner. This same formula would apply if you rent out the property. Notional income tax is calculated according to the calendar year – 1st of January to the 31st of December. B) Income tax on property which is rented out The rule here is: “non-resident property owners who rent out their property are obliged to declare the total amount received and are taxed over the net income”. Unlike notional income, this kind of tax is declared quarterly as follows: • 1st-20th April (1st quarter- Jan to March) • 1st-20th July (2nd quarter- April to June) • 1st-20th Oct (3rd quarter- July to Sept) • 1st-20th Jan (4th quarter- Oct to Dec) Have you got any questions on non-resident tax? If so, then please do let us know. Email admin@sun-lawyers.com or contact your nearest office - contact details in the advert below. The Mediterranean diet and daily exercise can help us reduce the likelihood of cardiovascular disease by up to 30%

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death, with more than 120,000 deaths annually in Spain. “Found among the most frequent pathologies are arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation, ischemic heart diseases, such as myocardial infarction and angina pectoris, and cerebral vascular diseases, and their incidence could be reduced up to 30% thanks to the Mediterranean diet and daily exercise”, said Dr. Luis González, head of the Cardiology Unit of Quirónsalud Alicante.

"The fundamental origin of cardiovascular disease," says Dr. Catheline Lauwers, head of the Cardiology Department of the Quirónsalud Valencia Hospital, "is found in atherosclerosis, a condition whose cause is found in the obstruction of the arteries caused by cholesterol deposits, in addition to other factors such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, stress and genetic inheritance. The control we can exert over these factors in order to reduce the likelihood of suffering from cardiovascular disease, depends on us". In terms of its symptoms, these will depend on the type of cardiovascular disease suffered and the gender of the patient, such as what happens with atherosclerotic disease. "This is the case of acute myocardial infarction," says Dr. Rafael Florenciano, cardiologist at the Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital, "which, while in men it manifests itself as a pain in the centre of the chest, spreading to the arms and accompanied by sweating and nausea, in women it can present itself as a less intense pain that does not usually spread to the left arm and that is commonly accompanied by a lack of air, which results, on numerous occasions, in a delay in diagnosis and its treatment". Quirónsalud, a reference in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases

Across its different centres, Quirónsalud offers the most advanced techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, among which the home cardiac monitoring service offered by Quirónsalud Alicante to patients whose pathology involves the implantation of devices such as pacemakers or defibrillators. "Thanks to this pioneering technology in Alicante's private health, we can monitor our patients twenty-four hours a day, three hundred and sixty-five days a year and guarantee their safety." says Dr. Luís González, head of the Cardiology Unit of the centre. Home monitoring consists of real-time retransmission of data and parameters from the pacemaker or defibrillator implanted in the patient to the specialist's consultation by means of a monitor that the patient has at home. "Thanks to this exhaustive follow-up, we can act immediately before any alteration of the heart rhythm occurs and offer an early treatment to the patient, which is so important in these cases." says the cardiologist. Currently, monitoring includes pacemakers, implantable defibrillators (ICDs), subcutaneous holter and cardiac resynchronisation therapy devices (CRT). It's an easy-to-use digital technology that opens a new communication channel between patients and specialists. In regards to the care of acute myocardial infarction, the most important manifestation of ischemic heart disease, Quirónsalud Valencia offers the infarction code. Thanks to this action protocol, once the patients are diagnosed, they immediately undergo radial catheterisation through the arm and under local anesthesia. "This technique enables us to directly visualise the arteries of the heart by means of a contrast injection and under X-ray control. In this way we diagnose the clogged artery and immediately proceed to open it and subsequently insert a spring called stent, thus restoring the blood flow immediately, saving the patient's life and having excellent long-term results." explains Dr. Lauwers from Quirónsalud Valencia. In the line of minimally invasive procedures for cardiac ailments, the Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital is a reference in the application of the TAVI technique for the treatment of severe aortic stenosis in patients who cannot have surgery. As explained by Dr. Rafael Florenciano, specialist at the Comprehensive Cardiology Unit of the Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, "the implantation of the procatheter aortic valve, or TAVI, is a solution that does not require surgery. It consists in replacing the damaged aortic valve with a new one without having to perform open surgery. The method employed is puncturing the femoral artery to place the valve, in a procedure very similar to that used in catheterisation for implanting coronary stents, but carrying out this procedure requires a great deal of experience due to its high complexity". THE BIRTH OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM part 4 If you've been following this little series over the past few months, congratulations, you've got some stamina. This will be the last article on the solar system, next month I'll begin a series on what to look at over the winter months. I ended last time with Jupiter and Saturn, so what's left. Neptune, Uranus and Pluto you will have heard of, but there is more besides than you ever imagined. The last 2 planets are gas giants, just like Jupiter and Saturn, though much smaller. They're not great objects for an amateur astronomer to look at and as far as we know at the moment, haven't had a huge influence on our current solar system, although that idea might well change as we learn more. Uranus is an oddball world, it's the only planet that sits on its side. All other planets spin close to right angles to their orbit around the Sun, Uranus is so far over it must have been hit by something truly massive in the distant past. It also has a ring system like Saturn, but it's a feeble thing, so dim it wasn't found until the voyager spacecraft went there. Now for the strange stuff. Months ago I described how all we know was formed by gravity from all the gas and dust etc. orbiting the Sun. You won't be surprised to hear that after the planets were made there was a lot of stuff left over. If you keep going outwards past Neptune, there's a region called the Kuiper belt. It's a vast area made up of anything from dust to rocks bigger than 100 kms across, and there are at least 100,000 of those. Guess where life threatening rocks are likely to come from. A major problem for us is that one-time planet Pluto has an elliptical orbit that passes through the belt, its gravity disturbing things as it goes. I'll finish by mentioning an area called the Oort cloud. If you like strange, this is it. Imagine a vast shell surrounding the whole solar system. Made up of methane, ammonia and ice the cloud is so big it stretches almost halfway to the next star (Proxima Centauri). How and why is it there? You might as well have a guess, you've as much chance of being correct as anyone else. 4 parts to this little series, and there are lots of things I've left out. Astronomy is a fast changing and fascinating interest that amateurs still make major contributions to. Why not come and join our little group and share the wonders of ‌...everything with us.

Are we really what we THINK? In case some of us have a problem with that, let me tell you that there is more truth in that statement than anything else you are likely to hear. You may be bald, overweight, frankly unattractive, with all manner of physical problems, but that is only what you LOOK LIKE. It is NOT WHAT you ARE, or WHO you are. Look at pop stars, football heroes, or anyone else who manages to attract the attention of the masses. Just think what they would look like walking down the street…. would the majority of them look outstanding? I don’t think so, BUT because of their various talents they really BELIEVE that they are something special and so THAT is what they ARE, both in their own eyes and everyone else’s. In a recent discussion I was having with a young man, I was commenting on the fact that I believe that 90% of the people are around in life out of sheer necessity to keep things turning over, but that the extra 10% are the ones in life who make the difference. He asked me if I thought he was one of the 10% ...I told him he probably was, because he asked the question! So many people wouldn’t even be able to associate with the concept that they are different, or be one of the 10%, because that is not what they THINK about themselves. Life offers us such a wonderful opportunity to take the best out of every situation, no matter how mundane…. we don’t have to have exciting lives to value the way we handle every situation. Look at the most well known types of work in the service industry… have you noticed street cleaners, toilet cleaners, dustbin men, waiters and waitresses, nurses etc. etc. who did their job with such an amazing attitude that they DID make a difference and it was noticeable. I always compliment people like that and I get great pleasure out of realising that they appreciate being valued. We can all make a difference, by the way we think about what and who we are! Until next time!

Hi All, Firstly, my deepest sympathy to the many people who suffered from the recent devastation of the Gota Fria. In the 19 years that I've lived here on the South Costa Blanca, I've never seen anything like it. I, like many others, have been encouraged by the response from so many of the entertainers and musicians based here, who have performed free of charge at several local events to raise funds for the folk who (in some cases) have lost everything. Well done Guys and Girls. This month I'd like to feature Adrian Hyde, who performs on the local music circuit as "AJ Swing". Adrian, or Ade, as he's better known, originates from Birmingham in the UK. Adrian made the move to Spain in 2013. Initially, he began hosting Karaoke evenings and performing, playing guitar and singing in local bars. His introduction to the music business began as a 16 year old, playing in a Rock / Punk band. Several years after that he joined "The Red Fenders", a Rock 'N Roll band, and spent the next 12 years with them, performing on the Midlands and Warwickshire club circuit. Whilst doing this, Ade also spent 2 years backing his daughter Lauren, who was a performing vocalist in bars and small festivals in and around the Midlands area.

QF Focus Magazine It was shortly after he came to Spain and began hosting his Karaoke evenings, that Ade found, quite by accident, that the genre of swing and rat pack music suited his voice extremely well. So, AJ Swing was born. After four decades in the music industry, it was a complete change of direction. He has now firmly established himself as a popular and versatile solo artiste, paying tribute to the legends of swing and rat pack music - which is more suitable for his Baritone voice. Ade plays many venues around the Costa Blanca area, and brings a varied selection of Iconic Artiste's music to the stage. He covers the well known numbers, from the likes of Frank Sinatra through to Perry Como, Matt Munro, Michael Buble, and many, many more. He can also add other genres of music to make any performance tailor made. If you haven't already seen and heard AJ Swing - keep an eye on the local press. He can be seen on YouTube, and has his own Facebook page "AJ Swing". I've said it many times before... we are very lucky here on the South Costa Blanca to have so many talented performers, who offer a great variety in entertainment.

Bye for now, D.P.

Quesada Bowls Club Report

Sponsored by

by Jim Donnelly

Club bowls was very quiet for the first part of last month, as Quesada hosted the Valenciam Championships along with Vistabella bowls. Quesada have a very good representation in the competition, with a number of our bowlers reaching the final stages. Peter Morgan and Terry Morgan played a very exciting game in the men’s pairs that went to an extra end. Unfortunately they missed out by the narrowest of margins, but congratulations for getting so far. The biggest congratulations of the day, however, must go to the ladies pair of Sandra Heath and Mel Highland, who came from a number of shots behind, to grind out a marvellous victory. We then saw the rest of the Valencian finals take place. We were assured of a Quesada victory in the ladies pairs as Jacquie Johnston and Mel Highland fought for the title. Jacquie was the victor, so congratulations on a splendid victory. The men’s pairs saw Peter Morgan up against Martin Foulcer from Vistabella. Peter was triumphant in this. All in all, a good tournament for Quesada on and off the green. We saw the start of the Winter and Berleen leagues, the Southern league and the South Alicante winter leagues. We have had a mixed start in the Winter league, but are sitting in fourth place, but in the Southern league the Swallows and Swans have had a great start with Swans topping the league and the Swallows in the top three. In the South Alicante Winter league, the Pearls also had a mixed start, but the Diamonds are sitting well in the league. Early days yet, but a good start to the season. Quesada Bowls Club welcomes both new and experienced bowlers. We’re a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard on newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk. The picture shows the Valencian Championship winners from Quesada.

Book Review by Ivor Kindle

Title: Vinegar 1001 practical uses Author: Margaret Briggs Publisher: Abbeydale Press I picked this book up at a local charity book stall and what a wonderful practical little book it has turned out to be. The book takes the reader through the history of vinegar, the product, and into the use at an everyday level of the actual product itself. On reading I was amazed at the everyday practical uses of vinegar...cleaning uses...cooking with vinegar...uses of vinegar for health and personal care..uses in relation to pets and animals and even uses in terms of home decoration and renovation. I am literally gobsmacked at the many uses of what I formally only ever used on my chips. This book is a real must for the family kitchen and in fact for the family home. What a versatile vinegar is.

our ARIES Time to start planning more of your bucket list experiences. It doesn't have to be anything your budget can't stretch to but even just doing more of the things that make you happy. Start exploring your options more rather than just sticking to your normal routines and decisions and the sky really is the limit. The motivation behind your problem needs to be addressed so you can move forward and either forget it altogether or confront it. If it is not bringing you pleasure or is not essential to you then maybe it is time for a clear out start letting things that serve no purpose go. VIRGO Although everything is not perfect it is definitely better than it has been recently. Some serious decisions now need to be made to make sure you don't repeat the mistakes again.

You might enjoy it but don't push it onto everyone else. PISCES Stop looking for hidden meanings in everything. Sometimes it just is what it is. Hold back from offering to help with everything and choose the things you want to be involved in more carefully. This way you will enjoy things much more and stick to them rather than doing lots of things half hearted.

Important Date for your Diary On Thursday 21 November The Good Care Group are holding an Open Day at the Jávea Parador Hotel. Because of demand they are actively looking to recruit more Live-in Carers who are based in Spain and able to travel to the UK to look after their elderly clients living throughout England and Scotland. The Good Care Group is proud to be the most awarded Live-In Care Provider in the UK, and is rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission, one of only 2% of care providers nationally. They have a successful recruitment team based in Spain and hold an induction training course in Guardamar every month. They warmly welcome international and expat Carers with at least 6 months professional or personal care experience. Having employed Carers from Spain for over seven years they have many people who have enjoyed rewarding careers. Professional live in Carer Marion splits her time between Spain and the UK. She says “Having worked in a variety of care settings over the years, it's live-in care that’s by far given me the greatest job satisfaction. More importantly, I’ve seen first-hand how having the time to build relationships with my clients is central to enhancing their sense of wellbeing and happiness later in life. Live-in care gives me the opportunity to do what inspired me to care in the first place: making a real difference to an individual’s life as opposed to them just being another number on my to-do list”. All professional Carers are directly employed by The Good Care Group and receive market-leading training. With a variety of rota patterns, flight contributions from Spain* and paid UK travel whilst in placement, their carers can get the best of both worlds; spending their time working in the UK and still enjoying valuable time off in Spain. Typically shift patterns for live-in carers are "2 weeks on" and "2 weeks off" for those living in Spain, and this has proven to be an ideal working arrangement for many Spain-based carers. However they have many other working patterns available to suit your lifestyle. As all of the roles are for “live-in” care positions, your accommodation will be provided for the duration of your working time in the UK. So if you have ever thought of extending your career as a carer, or perhaps you used to be in a medically related job, or if you have cared for a family member in the past and now fancy returning to the UK for fixed periods to care for others, and earning a good income whilst doing so, then this opportunity is not to be missed. Jayne Nuttall-Blake is the recruitment officer for Spain, and she will be at the Jávea Parador on 21 November between 10am and 4pm. There will be informative Presentations at 10.30am and 2.30pm, and Jayne will be very happy to talk and explain all about how the Good Care Group invests in supporting their carers, as well as the older and elderly people that you will be caring for. The Jávea Parador Hotel is located at Avenida del Mediteraneo 233, 03730 Jávea. In case you cannot make it to the Open Day but are interested in working for The Good Care Group, feel free to contact Jayne Nuttall-Blake on (0034) 634 345 685. *terms apply.

“SAMM Stompers” Raise Funds for Kids Saturday 12 October, Caldero Day, show ground Los Alcazares, every hour on the hour “Achy Breaky Heart” blasts out from the speakers. This is the signal for the “SAMM Stompers” to perform their fantastic line dance routine to the gathered audience. Twenty people in superb harmony, most dressed to impress in Stetsons and check shirts. At the same time the “Bucket Brigade” circulates encouraging people to lighten the load in their pockets by dropping their loose change into the bucket. After a while Caldero Day visitors, of all nationalities including a couple who had been married that day and arrived in their wedding finery, start to join in, following the routine the best they can. The numbers gradually grow until to between 100 and 120 people are dancing, so much so that Murcia Channel 7 TV filmed and interviewed the fundraisers. Throughout the day many SAMM members and guests visit the SAMM pitch to partake of the fabulous fare on offer, basically hot dogs with lashings of onions and mustard and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. More members would have attended but many thought the day had been cancelled. At the close of play 650€ was collected especially for the children affected by the Gota Fria that hit Los Alcazares in September, with the priority spending being for replacement school books. SAMM is the Sailing Association Mar Menor. Interested in sailing then visit our web site at www.sailingmarmenor.com.

Celebrations and jubilations On 19 October 2009 the doors were opened for the first time on the Age Concern Charity Shop in Av. del Mar, Los Montesinos, so it was fitting that a celebration was held for this 10th anniversary of the grand opening. Shop manager Paula, who has worked in the shop since day one, organised a party for volunteers and customers alike. They were all treated to cava, juices, wine, canapes and nibbles and we had a couple of renditions of ‘Happy birthday’ sung by everyone. The highlight of the day was the cutting of the birthday cake made especially by stalwart volunteer Kath Brocklebank. A toast was given by Paula thanking all her volunteers for their support over the years and to look forward to another 10 years of service to the community and the vulnerable in the area. Customers of all nationalities frequent this shop not only for the bargains of clothing and bric-a-brac but often call in just for a chat with the happy band of volunteers when dropping off donations for sale. Being a household name, Age Concern values the efforts made from their charity shops by informing people of all the services available, selling tickets for all the social events and just being there when needed. You can find out about all the services available by visiting the website www.ageconcerncostablancasur.org and if you want to know about all the social events find out on the Facebook site AGE CONCERN COSTA BLANCA SUR. You are also invited to become a friend of Age Concern. Just pop into the Day Centre at Calle Paganini, La Siesta any morning and see all the daily activities you can take part in, we do have a great load of fun.

A View From

The Top

Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up.

&

Gross Domestic What? If you have read any of my past pieces you will be aware that from time to time I like to delve into the world of economics. I have in the past written pieces about such topics as "The circular flow of income" and have also dabbled in the upcoming future events surrounding the rise of automation in the workplace ...now I have got you nodding off I will put you to sleep completely as I explain in simple terms how countries measure the growth of their economic wellbeing. For most of us the term GDP (gross domestic product) does not mean a hoot as we go about our daily lives ...indeed on the much vaunted "Table of Wisdom" at my local drinking hole, I have on a number of occasions tried to interject the notion of GDP only to be told in no uncertain terms that "all that malarkey" is not up for discussion..."we are watching the football". Unable to improve the intellectual level of my fellow table members via discourse and

QF Focus Magazine conversation I have decided to treat them and you Dear Reader to a simple explanation of some basis economic theory. Put very simply GDP... Gross Domestic Product is the measure of all the goods and services that an individual country has produced in a given fiscal year. This measure has been seen as fairly sound but has some faults in exactly what is measured as output. For example after the storms and floods that Britain suffered last year, the work that was required to fix the storm damage was counted as output and actually increased the annual GDP figures. Can this be right? The discussion in economic circles about this abnormality has led to a proposition that GDP could be replaced by a measure called GPI (Genuine Progress Indicator). This measure GPI would take GDP and correct it for various social and environmental factors such as inequality and the cost of underemployment, and even the actual cost of pollution. A drift away from pure output can be seen in the use of GPI. Alongside this discussion lies another measure of how a countries general wealth may be measured... this measurement is know as GNH (Gross National Happiness). This measure seeks to use four pillars of measurement...these being: Good Governance, Sustainable socio economic development, Preservation of culture, and Environmental conservation. What is interesting is that Bhutan where this measure has been used for over 30 years has not seen a fall off in per capita wealth ...and also shows that where issues of conservation are factored in, no downturn in economic growth is seen. Progressive economies in today’s world now have to take a far reaching view of how their populations grow in terms of well being, education, mental health etc alongside a range of day to day good life indicators. It would seem that where GDP measures who wins in economic terms within a society, it (GDP) does not measure who is left out of the economic goody pot. GNH however seeks to capture how all a particular population live and therefore would seem to be a more progressive measure of a nation's true state of both wealth and health. That’s got that off my chest... Class over ...back to discussing real things like football and drinking beer at the "Table of Wisdom".

QF Focus Magazine The Rugby World Cup. I have been watching the Rugby World Cup with ardent fascination... being a Rugby fan I have been up at all hours watching giant men knock several giant lumps off each other in the name of sporting excellence. The rise of the Japanese team is something to behold... breath taking pace and fantastic hand speed making their Rugby the most watchable of the tournament thus far. As I write this, some bone crunching fixtures are on the horizon. Japan itself has gone through a terrible typhoon and sadly some innocent people have lost their lives... but the show must go on as they say. Another aspect of the TV coverage has been the breaks for the adverts... during these breaks several well known Japanese inscrutable type sayings have been put up on screen as the Rugby comes back on after the break. I have been watching and trying to capture these "words of wisdom", so for your information I offer: Teinei- Doing things the proper way. Seijuka- Tranquility can be found in chaos. Wa- Harmony comes before the self. IshinDenshin- Unspoken Understanding. Danshan- There is art in declutering. Ma- The space between two objects is as important as the objects themselves. My particular favourite is that ‘Power corrupts the few, while weakness corrupts the many’. The Quarter finals are upcoming ...so it’s good luck to the three surviving home nations teams. Rock A-Bye Baby. I have written in the past about my seemingly chaotic descent into my dotage… well how about this... I retired to bed early to continue my reading of the latest C. J. Sansom Shardlake book titled "Tombland". The book was a well received Christmas gift from my eldest son and as it was very new it was the Hardback copy which has around 860 pages. I must have fallen asleep whilst reading and woke up in the early hours of the morning with the room in total darkness and in a half asleep state of awakening I felt the book under my body and still not fully in control of my half asleep mind I turned and rolled on the bed only to find that I had rolled out of bed and was sent crashing to the floor. I was soon fully awake as you can imagine but found myself stuck between the bedroom wall and the bed...I had rolled out of bed on the narrow side. It’s pitch black and I am jammed between the bed

Page 25 and the wall unable to move and unable to turn around. I asked myself... “Are you OK?”...nothing broken, now what to do next? Now somewhat composed, I managed to turn myself onto my knees and started to crawl along the floor toward the end of the bed only to find myself jammed in by the corner of my bookcase ...it’s at an angle across the corner of the wall and was blocking my exit as I tried to crawl to somewhere that was a place of safety. All this in the middle of the night. Now enter Fonzie my Irish Terrier ...into the room he bounds and comes up to me and starts barking and licking me thinking this is a right old game we have got here. “Off”...”Off” I shout ...”Fonz will you get off of me!” In all the chaos I manage to squeeze through the gap between bed and bookcase and after some struggle I managed to stand up using the corner of the bed as a prop. With the light now turned on I look at the clock and it’s 4.20am. Composed I go to the kitchen make a cup of tea and let Fonzie out in the courtyard for a pee... have one myself (a pee) and yes you have guessed... I settle down back into bed and once again start to read my book. Oh, and now I am now in the market for one of those children’s gadgets that tucks under the mattress and stops children falling out of bed. Talk about growing old disgracefully. Night, Night.

Coming of Age for the Velvetones Ladies Harmony Chorus Traditionally at 21 you are given a key to the door. This is regarded as an end of a cycle as you have come of age. In the case of the Velvetones sadly, 21 years signifies our retirement from the public stage. We were born in October 1998 with 8 initial members under the direction of Harry Hall. There have been many twists and turns over the years with no less than 6 Musical Directors. We have entertained in theatres, restaurants, bars, private parties, social clubs, retirement homes, a wedding and even at Benidorm Palace. We can also claim to have sung on cruise ships, but only when they were in dock! We enjoyed combining with other local choirs to sing at the annual Christmas Carol service in Torrevieja. In the 2005 LABBS (Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers) convention in Llandudno we competed as an international chorus. On another visit to the UK to attend the 2008 LABBS convention in Harrogate as spectators, we entertained fellow passengers on the outward plane journey. We have been involved with SABS (Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers) since its inception in 2009 attending conventions around Spain. So many wonderful memories have been experienced over these years both at the sing outs and at our own private social functions and excursions. Lasting friendships have been made and will continue. There have been a number of countries from both hemispheres represented in our line up including Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Holland, Germany, South Africa, New Zealand and of course all corners of the UK. With continuous support from our wonderful audiences, supporters, family and friends we have been able to generously donate funds to worthwhile charities throughout our area. So it is with deep sadness we announce that we have taken our final curtain call. We thank everyone who has supported us over the years, your contribution and encouragement has been very much appreciated.

28th Edition Miguel Indurain Sportif 2019 On Friday 19 July, four of us left the shop at 5.30 am, our mechanic Harry Morrow, Martyn Stone and Stepson Mathew Moth Robertson all set to travel the 700kms to Pamplona in Navarre for the 2020 Pinarello roadshow and the 28th edition Miguel Indurain Sportif.

It was an early start and a long journey however, without any problems and quiet roads we arrived at our hotel safely at 1pm where we immediately noticed the change in temperature, it was a lot colder up there. This was a different hotel this year and was right in the centre of town which was great. We unloaded our bikes and checked in to our rooms then proceeded to the dining room for lunch as we were absolutely famished. After lunch we drove 10km to Pinarello’s factory just outside Pamplona where we were treated like royalty by the staff. We had cheese and wine and were shown round the factory before seeing the exciting new 2020 Pinarello range, including e-bikes, the reborn Prince and the new F12 superbike. All dealers were given a 2020 model Pinarello Gan Disk with Ultegra DI2 groupset especially designed for the event, which one of us had to use during the Sportif, along with special commemorative cycle top and shorts. We had a good chat with the Pinarello staff and learnt more about the new aerobics and design of the Dogma F12 which team Ineos (formerly team Sky) are going to continue to ride. We returned to the hotel at 4pm, got washed and changed and made our way down to the bar for a drink and to watch the highlights of the Tour de France. The dining room was beautifully set for our 6 course evening meal with Miguel Indurian’s Pinarello Time Trials bike and his Pinarello road bike both on display – these were the bikes that he used when he won the Tour De France on 5 separate occasions, 1991, 92, 93, 94 and 95. During dinner Miguel Indurian gave an excellent presentation about his life and cycling in general (I’m glad that we had Harry to translate). At midnight it was all over and time to hit the sack as it was an early rise the next morning with breakfast at 6am followed by a photo shoot with all the Pinarello dealers in Spain on Pinarello bikes in front of the hotel. Moth was testing the new Gan Disk DI2. We left the hotel at 7am and cycled en mass for 30 minutes to the centre of the town in Vallava where again we had our photos taken with Miguel Indurain and Pinarello. All riders had to sign on just like the start of every stage in the tour before making their way to the start line where we got to start right at the front with Miguel as we were guests of Pinarello. There were 2 separate routes again this year 160km and 100km, Harry, Martyn and Moth all opted for the short one whilst I was just going on a short 50km cycle round the area as I had been advised by my surgeon not to participate in any large events in case I got knocked off. The race started promptly at 8am and the 4000 riders were soon underway. There were police outriders to the front and rear and at most junctions, the roads were completely closed for the first 50-60km after which the groups had thinned out considerably, the whole race was also televised by helicopter which followed most of the way. The group were soon passing through all the small towns and villages it was amazing to see all the inhabitants out cheering them on, this has been a major event for this area for the last 28 years. There were 2 category 3 climbs and one category 2 climb on the route giving a total ascent of 1500 metres, with a total distance of 100kms, and the temperature was now above 28 degrees, which was great for us. After 2hr 58 Harry crossed the finish line just in front of Moth meaning both had secured Gold medals for their class, Martyn finished in 3hrs 20 meaning he also got a Gold medal. I had numerous cups of coffee at different villages and was at the finish line waiting on the guys. The event was well sponsored with live music at the end, food for the competitors and many of the large sponsors had tents and were displaying bikes and accessories. There was secure parking for all bikes, free food and drink, and also massages for anyone willing to queue. The weather was great, 2 weeks before hand Pamplona was flooded by the heavy rains. The prize giving unfortunately was not until 4pm, and as it was only 12 noon we decided to cycle back to the hotel for a gin and tonic. We were staying overnight again so quickly packed up the bikes got showered and changed and made our way to a town centre bar to watch the Tour de France, at 7pm we met up with Steve and Julie Buckley for drinks and something to eat, they had also done the Sportif as they were heading back to the UK for 4 weeks and it was on their way. After another great night, then it was back to the hotel and bed. Sunday morning, we were up early refuelled the van after loading the bikes and hit the road. This was a fantastic weekend which was exceptionally well organized from the start to the finish, it was so nice to meet Miguel Indurain again and also get the opportunity to cycle with him on the Saturday morning, he is a really nice guy. Pinarello did us proud with their commitment to their own road show and to the Sportif, making sure everything went smooth and was a success. We are all looking forward to next year’s event already. Team “Cyclogical” meet every Tuesday and Thursday night at 5.30pm and Sunday mornings at 8am and cover between 90 and 120kms at a moderate to fast pace so if you fancy a challenge come along and join us. Looking to improve your fitness, riding ability and speed and also have a new group of friends to train with then why not come along and give it a try or call Gary on 637 487 377.

QUIZ NIGHTS All year round entertainment is available in the south Costa Blanca area in the form of quizzes. They appeal to residents and holiday visitors and popularity is always on the increase. They come in various forms, but still the most popular is the basic paper and question form in which people can discuss the subjects before answering. A quiz should always be fun, whether you win or not. To comply with Spanish Law, you cannot pay money to take part or receive cash prizes. So all quizzes should not charge entry and most bars give wine or food vouchers as prizes. Quizmaster Mike currently presents 5 quizzes a week plus doing several for charity as well.
