Welcome to your Universe This month I'm going to give a quick overview of your universe and just a few of the amazing things in it. A problem most amateur astronomers have is that we use quite a few semi - technical words and ideas in our conversation. We tend to forget that many people are not clear what they mean. I came across this recently when talking to a friend about our galaxy. He knew, quite correctly that it was big, and had lots of stars in it, but that was about all. The universe. Simple enough, it's everything there is. Everything we can see, observe, and infer from all our learning. It started with the 'Big Bang', about 13.8 billion years ago and has been expanding ever since. Are we certain about the Big Bang? Yes, we are, but we only understand some of the process and ideas of where and why it came from is a matter of much research and speculation. Why are we sure it happened? That's an easy one. The further away we look into space, the further back in time we're looking too, and we can observe and measure the effects from only moments after it happened. The above is a much simplified description, with no mention of sub atomic particles etc. but I hope you get the idea. Galaxies. We all live in one, we call ours the Milky Way galaxy. Anyone reading this is likely to have looked up on a really dark clear night and seen that wonderful wispy trail of light that meanders across the sky. What you're looking at is millions of stars in another arm of a huge whirlpool of stars that make up our galaxy. There are around 250 billion stars altogether, and Earth circles around just one very ordinary one, the Sun. Incidentally, galaxies were discovered only 90 years ago by Edwin Hubble whom the famous space telescope is named after. How many galaxies are there? No-one is sure yet, but currently about 200 billion have been found. Astronomers expect this to increase to maybe 1 trillion as we learn different ways to find them all. Do all galaxies look like ours? No, they don't. There are a lot of spiral galaxies like ours, but many other shapes as well. Globular, open, irregular elliptical etc. etc. The list varies with who you ask. The main point is that they are always changing shape, but it takes millions of years to do so. That's about all I've space for this month, so next time I'll continue with some more wonders, but I'd like to leave you with a thought. I was asked if astronomers believe in God, and creation. Certainly many astronomers are religious, and one said a very sensible thing. 'Surely only a fool would expect God to make things simple.' Group Vega Baja Astronomy

There is another busy month in store for us as we currently have friends over from the UK to sample the sun, sea and sangria on the lovely Costa Blanca. It is their first visit (even though they have been threatening to come over for a number of years) but I have a feeling it won't be their last. On their departure we have a couple of days planned to Barcelona as a birthday gift to my now adolescent angel to see a concert of her latest favourite pop band. This will then be followed by a mad weekend celebrating my other half's biggish birthday, with again lots of friends here to join in the antics! And in amongst all of this we have the lead up to the deadline for the Autumn /Winter Professional Services magazine ...I wonder when I will get the time to do all this work among the socialising that is expected of me? Female Focus Publications are proud to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the flagship magazine Female Focus this month. There are not many companies in the English language publishing world here, that can say they have been serving the expat community for 25 years and are continuing to be stronger than ever. Towards the end of October there are a few dates for your diary with the clocks going back on the 28th, and of course Halloween when there is sure to be a few parties to attend. And dare I use the swear word “Christmas” just yet? Well there are quite a few venues filling up fast for Christmas and New Year so don't leave it too late to reserve your table. Congratulations to Virginia Ingram from Torrevieja who won last month's 50€ competition after spotting the logo on page 33. See if you can spot the logo in this issue for a chance to win 50€, see inside for details of how to enter. Good luck!

Make sure you’ve got a funeral plan If you’re thinking of relocating to Spain, Portugal or Cyprus, an Avalon funeral plan lets you make funeral arrangements in advance. Starting a new life abroad is exciting, but there’s plenty of practical considerations before you can don your sunglasses and put your feet up. While many expat checklists include things like health insurance and how to import a car, most of them forget to mention one very important thing: funeral arrangements. It’s probably the last thing on your mind when you’re planning your new dream lifestyle in the sun. But it’s something that you need to think about, sooner rather than later. Here are five reasons why buying a funeral plan should be on your to-do list when you move abroad. 1. Make it easier for your loved ones when the time comes Arranging a funeral for a loved one is a distressing experience at the best of times, but when you’re in a foreign country and may not be fluent in the language, it can become stressful and confusing. There are also cultural differences to consider. For example, in Spain most funerals take place within 48 hours. In Cyprus, you won’t be able to have a cremation, as there is no crematorium on the island. By buying an Avalon funeral plan in advance, your loved ones won’t have to shop around for a funeral director or worry about how the process works in your new country. All they’ll have to do is contact your nominated funeral director and they’ll take care of the arrangements specified in your plan. 2. Secure the cost of funeral director fees When you die abroad your assets may be frozen and become harder to access for your family to pay for the funeral. In addition, if your family have recently made the move to a sunnier life abroad, you might not have the cash savings you could once rely on. When you buy a funeral plan for Spain, Portugal or Cyprus, the funeral director fees are pre-paid in advance. This makes the process easier when the time comes, as well as easing some of the financial pressure for your loved ones. 3. Enact the plan abroad or in the UK If you split your time between Britain and your home in the sun, Avalon has you covered. Your pre-paid funeral plan can be enacted in the UK or in Spain, for example, so that you’ll still be covered wherever you are. It even covers the other countries we operate in, so if you swap Spain for Cyprus, or Portugal for Spain, your funeral plan will still be valid. It’s also perfect if you decide to return to the UK later in life. You won’t need to worry about buying a new funeral plan – simply let our friendly customer service team know that you’ve relocated and Avalon will assign you a new nominated funeral director in the UK. 4. Make the most of flexible payment plans in Pound Sterling or Euros When you buy an Avalon funeral plan for Spain, Portugal or Cyprus, you can choose a payment plan that suits you. You can pay upfront in one lump sum, or over several years. Your Avalon representative can tell you more about the options available. In addition, whereas with life insurance you can lose all your money if you miss a payment, you will not lose all of the money paid in with an Avalon funeral plan. If you need to adjust your payment plan, our friendly, professional advisors are there to help you. 5. Get support from a 24-hour bereavement line When the time comes, your loved ones can use our 24-hour bereavement line to find out what to do next. With British operators based in Europe, you won’t have to worry about language barriers. All the information you need about who to call and how to enact your funeral plan will be included in your documentation. Make sure you keep it in a safe place and let our advisors know where to find it when they need to. Find out more about Avalon’s range of European funeral plans by calling 671 935 072 or visit https://www.avalonfuneralplans.com/ contact-us-europe-venue.

HELP Vega Baja make dreams come true…… For many families they are unable to take their children on a day out to places such as Terra Mitica and to build memories together that will last a lifetime. HELP Vega Baja decided that they would step in and on Wednesday 4 September, volunteers from the charity were up early and ready to take 50 children and parents off for a day to remember at Terra Mitica. The families, all referred from the town halls in San Miguel, Benijófar and Almoradi were in for a treat. The charity greeted their guests for the day with goody bags and were waved off by representatives from all three town halls, including Concejal de Bienestar Social, Basilia Valero and Laura Educadora from San Miguel, Alcalde, Luis Rodríguez and Marisol, Trabajadora Social from Benijófar and Alfonso Garcia, Concejal de Bienestar Social and Maria Fernanda, Jefa de Servicios Sociales. A very excited coach arrived in Terra Mitica with entrance, lunch tickets and money for an ice-cream in hand. All wearing brand new baseball caps they were off. President of the charity, Michele Masson and Welfare officer Wendy Burton went along and armed with everything from clip boards to wet wipes walked around the park for the next 6 hours watching as the children ran from ride to ride, not daring to look as some went on rides that looked like they were going to take off in orbit and breathing a sigh of relief when they saw them sitting enjoying an ice-cream in the sunshine! Michele said “when we first thought of the idea it all seemed quite easy to organise but I have to say there was a lot involved to ensure that the day was a success. I have to thank everyone involved including the town halls, HELP volunteers, Jessica and David at Euro Tours and of course a great friend of the charity Beatriz Lara from the Casaverde Fundación who was our link with social workers and made sure everything was in order and even came along on the morning to all the pick-up points to wave everyone off! The day was a complete success and the smiles on the faces of the now sleepy children when we arrived home and they collected their last bag of goodies said it all. We will remember the day for a very long time and I hope it provided the families a memory that will stay with them too”. For more information on the work that HELP Vega Baja does in the community call 96 672 3733 or visit the HELP Vega Baja website at www.helpvegabaja.com. The charity also recently launched a confidential and emotional support helpline called Connections which is available 24 hours a day on 96 502 1552.

SAMM’s Autumn Race Season Underway The SAMM Autumn Series should have started on 9 September but the day was cancelled due to the weather, so it was encouraging to see 13 competitors and the 8 officials arrive bright and early on Sunday 16 September. 3 Shoestring dinghies, 2 Balaton Day Sailers and 2 independent dinghies comprised the fleet. The new timetable that sets fixed times for the day was nearly thrown into disarray when the gate to the beach refused to open and CTD had to get their maintenance man to clear the problem. Then all the locks to the jetty and the control office were found to have seized after weeks without use. However, a liberal application of silicon spray and a few taps with a hammer managed to free them and the 4 lap morning race started on time at 11.30am. A great day was had by all. The races were decided mainly by how well the crews read and reacted to the wind shifts. Racing is every Sunday; weather permitting, at the CTD centre in Los Narejos on the Mar Menor. The day starts at 10am and all are welcome. For more details see the SAMM web site at http://sailingmarmenor.com/groups/samm-racing/. The photos show Race winners: Left, Julian Singleton, first race. George Noden and Julian Perring, second race. Top right photo: Qub, front and Topaz rear, battling for the lead.

Our lives are controlled by two big forces They are …things that are working on the outside, and things that are working on the inside. We have very little control over external forces, such as things that other people are doing that involve us, or over personal disasters which occur to every human being, death of a loved one, or personal illness and pain. What really matters is the strength of the force inside us………. How do we respond to those disasters? Over that we have complete control, believe me! Think of the worst possible scenario ….it will be very different for all of us. Put yourself to the test. Think of that situation …now stop thinking of it. Did you manage to do it? Who did that for you? Anyone else? NO! You did it …..and that is just the beginning of realising that we are in control of what we worry about, what we stress and fret about on a daily basis. To stop worrying does not mean that we don’t care ….it means that we have made a choice to do the thing that will work out the best for us in the long run. It is the TOTAL SHOCK of the situation that we allow to pull us down. I discovered on a personal level that I AM in control of what I think about, and what I ALLOW to touch me emotionally, and I know that I don’t WANT to go around feeling unhappy about anything that I can do nothing about. It helps to know that we can make changes in our own lives just by thinking differently. Take control! Until the next time!

Book Review by Ivor Kindle

Book Title: Rogue Lawyer Author: John Grisham Publisher: Hodder Sebastian Rudd is a street lawyer... he defends the dregs of the criminal world. He works from a fitted out van that he uses as a mobile office and has a personal minder to guarantee his safety. No case is below Sebastian Rudd... he works at the margins of jurisprudence and is not averse to cut corners as he defends his clients from the might of the state prosecutors. John Grisham as usual tells an engrossing story ..fast paced and full of in depth knowledge of the American legal system as it operates at street level. I read this book in three days, a good leisure read with an interesting insight into the world of cage fighting.

...keep reading Ivor Kindle.

A View From The Top

Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. Vacillation and Inertia Summer is over ...holidays are over and the kids are back at school. In London the House of Commons is back after a holiday break that most ordinary people could not dream about. Politicians are back and the television channels are busy reporting the who, what and when of British political life. As an ardent student of politics, I do endeavour to watch the broadcasts from the House of Shame ...Oh the cut and thrust of political debate ...the razor like sharpness of the argument as our elected representatives fashion the society in which the people of Britain live.

QF Focus Magazine The only thing wrong with my opening paragraph is that after watching the first week or so of the machinations of the political class, absolutely nothing of substance is being debated and discussed in the chamber of the House of Shame. Having said that I do recognise that Brexit is ongoing ...but Brexit has been ongoing for a couple of years and up to date absolutely naff all has been agreed or even looks like it will be agreed. The Labour opposition are again in a mire about antisemitism, and in truth to call them an opposition is to stretch the meaning of the word to beyond its meaning. The government ...again another stretch of a word, do not govern at all ...they respond, and not very quickly, to events that surround them. Leadership at the top end of the political spectrum is non existent ...May and Corbyn must be the two most inept leaders of modern times. She, May is terrified of doing anything in case it backfires and comes back to bite her on the rump and He, Corbyn is just no use in a modern environment. Mired in historical socialism he would govern by consensus ...nothing wrong with government by consensus, the problem is that Corbyn would always be the arbiter of what that consensus is ..ie, If what the people want is not what I want then it will not be acted upon. Leadership by committee is not leadership it is vacillation ...leadership by inactivity leads to Inertia. I have said it before and will say it again ...Democracy in Britain is ascribed, it is not representative ...first past the post voting denies the people their democratic right, it does not enhance it. The Putin Factor Evidence has emerged that places the nerve agent attack in Salisbury at the front door of the Kremlin ...not on the door knocker but certainly on the front mat. Pictures of Russian agents walking through the byways of England along with documented proof of official Russian passports, (not forgeries) albeit with false names, point to the active involvement of the Russian military GRU spy agency. My question to the Russian authorities would be along the lines of "just how reckless can you be in placing a nerve agent in the environs of a populated British city"? What can be the rational for leaving a deadly nerve agent in a public place ...the evidence suggests that the effect of the nerve agent is not selective to a particular individual ...it (the agent) will kill or incapacitate all who come into contact with it. Why do the Russian authorities show so little regard for the ordinary people of Britain ...are our lives so worthless to them. As an individual I would never advocate poisoning of innocent people as a price to pay for the head of an enemy. Where is the civilisation in this way of thinking ...where is the common humanity ...I would guess that to Putin we are potential enemies and therefore not entitled to the norms of civilised behaviour. A ripe old age Chatting to my mates around the "Table of wisdom" the conversation turned to the issue of how we felt as individuals now that we as a collective are all over the plateau of retirement. The focus became one of how our bodies were coping with our dotage. As a collective I doubt that there are enough working body bits between us to build one whole fit person ...that said however, the collective intellect still seems to be working and we do, on a regular basis, discuss the things that really matter in today’s world. I can assure you that not one contentious offside decision in Football gets past us ...the subject of food is a matter of the greatest concern and of course the jokes of both the Carry On team and Tommy Cooper are never far from the scene. Politics and economics get the occasional mention but as time is limited we tend to concentrate on the really important stuff. In conclusion I thought I would share with you Dear Reader a few notable quotes with regard to old age. 1. "Just remember, once you are over the hill you begin to pick up speed". 2. Bob Hope said "I don't feel old. I don't feel anything ‘til noon. That's when it's time for my nap". My favourite is from Stephen Fry who said " I don't need you to remind me of my age. I have a bladder to do that for me".

Easy Peasy Plum Jam Summer produces a glut of glorious vegetables and fruit and this year is no exception! My mum’s plum tree has supplied family, friends and neighbours with an abundance of fruit. When there is so much to go round, there is only one thing do; bottle summer into a jar to enjoy later when the days are dark dismal and summer is but a dim distant memory. This is one of the simplest recipes to make plum jam. It is lovely laced with cinnamon or a drop of port! Plums are high in pectin and should have no trouble setting as a jam. Sterilising is a crucial part of jam and preserve making as it keeps bacteria, yeasts and fungi at bay. If the jars are sterile and sealed correctly, un-opened the jam will keep for a year. Ingredients 2lb plums 4 tbsp water 2lb sugar 2 tbsp/ half a lemon juice 1 knob butter, approx 3-4 jam jars To sterilise jars Oven Method: Wash the jars in hot soapy jars. Place the wet jars upside down on a baking tray. Place in the oven and turn the heat to 160º-180ºC leave for about 20 minutes, remove just before filling. Microwave Method: Wash the jars in hot soapy jars; leave the jars a little wet. Microwave for 30 - 45 seconds depending on the size of the jar.

Recipe · Wash the plums, halve and remove the stones. · Into a large heavy bottomed pan/ preserving pan place the plums with the water. Cook gently for about 10 minutes or until the plums are soft. · Add the sugar and lemon juice – stir until the sugar has dissolved. · Bring to the boil and boil rapidly, constantly stir the mixture until thickened slightly and syrupy. To check if the setting point is reached, either use a sugar thermometer which is 105ºC degrees or place a small saucer in the freezer for 5 minutes. Take the pan off the heat, spoon a little of the hot jam onto the cold plate, return to the freezer for 2 minutes. Push finger through the jam on the plate - If it wrinkles and feels gel-like, it's ready. If it's not ready, turn the pan back on, simmer for five minutes and test again. · When setting point has been reached, skim off the froth and add the knob of butter which will disperse the remaining scum. Stir. · Ladle the hot jam into the sterilised jars, leaving a 1/4 inch (1/2 cm) gap at the top between the preserve and the lid. While everything is still hot, cover the jars with their lids or top with wax paper and cellophane secured with an elastic band.

What WIFI, where and why? Living on the Costa Blanca brings more sunshine, warmer weather (most of the time) and‌ near hopeless WIFI signals due to houses being made primarily of concrete. Concrete is not good for transmitting WIFI signals through your house, so many struggle to get a good WIFI signal if they are not in the same room as their router. If you’d rather not spend your life with your family sitting in one room huddled around your router, there are some options for boosting your WIFI signal to pick it up anywhere in your home. External WIFI stick Sometimes the issue is that your laptop has a weak WIFI device built in, which is common in entry level laptops. If this is your issue, a USB WIFI stick will give you a stronger link to your router. They are easy to install (Plug & Play) but you do have to be careful not to snap it off! WIFI Extender A WIFI extender is a device that you plug in somewhere in your house that connects seamlessly to your existing router and increases the range so that you can pick it up anywhere within the extenders range. These work well, but the extender does need to be placed within the existing range of the routers WIFI, which does limit how far they can extend the signal, and sometimes multiple extenders are needed to give you coverage where you need it. Homeplug / Powerline System Homeplug WIFI consists of a device that you plug into the wall (NOT extension sockets!) near to the existing router, which uses your household electric wiring to send signals to a second device that plugs in wherever you need WIFI coverage in your house. This second device provides the WIFI extension, and can be placed anywhere on the same electrical circuit as the first device. Although there are some limitations to this system, it is the most reliable we have found for extending a WIFI signal. If you are interested in boosting your signal or want to discuss other options then please come and talk to us. Over & Out good buddies! Page 23 In 2015, Deja Nielson was runner up in the Euphoria Electronic Festival on Indaba Music, with her song "I Want You". On 21st October she will be presenting R-E-S-P-E-C-T. This show is a tribute to the "Queen of Soul", Aretha Franklin, followed by a Boogie Nights themed party. This is going to be a production that you will not want to miss and tickets are now on sale from J.R's Country Club in Ciudad Quesada, Deja Nielson and Belinda McBride. A date well worth looking forward to.

Hi All! Thank goodness, the weather has started to cool down. This has to have been the longest, hottest most uncomfortable summer that I've experienced in the past 18 years living here. This month I'd like to feature a very talented singer, and lovely lady, by the name of Deja Nielson. Deja is a very accomplished Jazz and Soul singer, whose inspiration comes directly from some of the great legends of this genre of music. Artistes, such as Sarah Vaughan, Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan and others, who had a big influence on her. Her voice is silky and smooth, powerful and evocative. You can feel the love, and fun that are constant themes in the music she performs. Although Deja is relatively new to the Costa Blanca music scene, she is not new to the world of music. She has added her vocal and songwriting talents to artistes in the United States, Australia, the U.K. and Indonesia. She has won awards for her song writing. Amongst these awards are: The Grand Prize in the Featured Artist series on Indaba Music, for her original song "Anytime". In the same year, Deja won the Grand Prize in the U.K. Electronica Artist series on Indaba Music for the song "Never Disappear".

In conversation with Deja Nielson, she informed me that she was born in Alabama, U.S.A., but grew up in North Florida. She has been living in Europe since her marriage to RenĂŠ Nielson, a music producer and song writer. This charming couple work closely together. They have no children and have enjoyed living on the Costa Blanca since 2009. Why not check out her up and coming performances on Facebook, Deja Nielsen Live, or Instagram (dejaadowdell). A truly talented performer, who is a joy to watch.

Bye for now, D.P.

Diabetes and oral health Diabetes is on the increase. The World Health Organisation recently declared that more than 420 million people worldwide are diabetic. Many sufferers know about the damaging effects this can have on the feet and eyes, but less are aware of the changes it can cause in the mouth. Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss, and it appears to make the control of your blood sugar level more difficult. Diabetics are more susceptible to gum disease and tooth loss. Therefore, it is important to treat and eliminate gum infection for optimal diabetes control. This has been shown to improve blood sugar levels, thereby potentially decreasing medication requirements. Dry mouth. This occurs when the salivary glands don't produce sufficient saliva, causing your mouth to become inflamed and sore. It can make eating more difficult, leading to unstable control of blood sugar. Tooth decay. Given the need for a diet restricted in sugar, you would expect diabetics to suffer less decay. Unfortunately, the opposite is true. Reduced saliva flow results in less neutralising of the acids that attack teeth during decay, and the saliva that is produced has higher sugar levels. Fungal infection. Candida albicans is a fungus that normally lives inside the mouth without causing any problems. But when you have diabetes, deficient saliva in your mouth and extra sugar in your saliva allow the fungus to cause an infection called candidiasis (thrush), which appears as sore white or red areas in your mouth. Oral surgery problems: If you need oral surgery, diabetes can cause complications, particularly if poorly controlled. Diabetes retards healing and increases risk of infection. Your blood sugar levels also may be harder to control after oral surgery. Advice when visiting your dentist. Remind him/ her that you have diabetes and discuss any specific diabetes-related issues with them. Eat before your dental appointment, and take your medications at the usual times, to ensure your blood sugar is within the normal range. Regular check-ups will help to identify and treat any diabetes-related problems at an early stage. Should you wish to speak to our informed team with any concerns or book an appointment simply call 96 572 5940 or pop in to the clinic at C/ Los Arcos 19, Quesada.

Slowly add the water mixing well to make a thick batter, thick enough so the batter coats the fish. Add the bicarbonate of soda to the mixture just moments before frying and mix well. Heat the oil and dip each piece of fish in the batter and deep fry until crisp and golden brown. Serve hot with yoghurt chutney. NB. Make sure the oil is at the right temperature by putting a drop of batter in the hot oil, if it sits then it is not ready, if it bubbles and rises within a few seconds it is ready, if it goes dark too quickly then the oil is too hot.

Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad. Stags and hens in the doghouse

THE riot act is being read to stag and hen parties over their drunken behaviour by Spanish politicians who believe they lower the tone and drive away culture vultures. Despite the seemingly endless deep pockets of the visitors, city chiefs are getting sniffy with those who arrive just to get squiffy during the pre-marriage celebrations with gangs of pals. Everyone is familiar with the stag and hen parties that start early at a UK airport bar, can be a tad rowdy on the flight as they make their own entertainment and head straight for the beers on touching down; just to top up before a long night out. However, this is not a tale about the streets of Benidorm and a dig at Brits behaving badly; this is a story of how Andalusia has been left reaching for the aspirin and questioning how to cope with growing numbers of stags and hens. Rather charmingly described as ‘bachelor’ and ‘bachelorette’ parties, city halls blame high-speed rail links, cheap apartment rentals and a series of online entertainment packages for the rise and rise of the attraction of key cities for those who just want to have fun. Destinations favoured to celebrate a fond farewell to the single life are Granada, Seville, Cordoba and Malaga; the AVE high speed rail link means the parties are whisked in and away. Seville, the party city Back in May, your dedicated correspondent and a group of friends travelled on said railway from Valencia to Seville, helping fill up the carriages at an early hour were a flock of three hen parties and a single stag; they were in good spirits and other than bothering the cafeteria to start drinking while most were still sipping coffee, well-behaved. One party of hens clambered off at Cordoba, dressed in a bull-fighting theme, the bride-to-be in a rather fetching matador costume – it was only when queuing for a cab in Seville it was apparent just how many such groups were drawn to the historic city. And later exploring the medieval narrow streets, it became more and more apparent that Seville was a popular destination for the bachelors and bachelorettes. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves, taking selfies and having a good time. Perhaps the serious partying starts later when most people are tucked up in bed. Cordoba’s Councillor for Tourism Pedro Garcia has obviously had enough of the city being a magnet for stags and hens. “Cordoba has four world heritage sites and we aspire to high-end tourism that appreciates and enjoys our culture. These send-offs, which disturb people’s sleep at night, are not what we want.” Back in Seville, one specialist company hit out at competition undercutting market prices; alleging some allowed a party of 20 to bed down in an apartment – there are growing numbers of illegal rentals - that should sleep five. It was lowering the tone said a spokesman, who said there was a danger the city could become a “low cost destination”. (Maybe it was a simple game of sardines?) It was not a matter of filling coffers but damaging the image and cultural tourism model say the powers that be. According to a critic: “A euro earned from quality tourism is worth €100 from a bachelor bash.” Councils are looking to increase fines for loud anti-social behaviour; meanwhile it was very quiet on the return journey to Valencia except for the gentle sound of plink plink fizz!

Secrets of the beehive

PLANS to ease the housing crisis in Barcelona with Japaneseinspired ‘pods’ have been given the thumbs down by the authorities despite the space age design for modern life. Spain’s second city is in urgent need of affordable accommodation and company Haibu 4.0 aims to answer the call with a temporary solution with its capsules; the name is said to mean ‘beehive’ in Japanese. It has aimed its publicity at people who cannot afford soaring rents or those with a long commute and drew its inspiration from Japanese hotels where guests enjoy a bed, TV on the ceiling and clever storage space – kitchen and bathroom are shared. Haibu advertised its rooms – possibly via a podcast – at 200€ a month and has already received over 500 replies for the 15 available capsules, all housed in 100 square metres. It believes it is a real solution; each pod is 120cm wide, 200cm long and 120cm high and offers more privacy than a share hostel dormitory. Planners’ computers say ‘no’ – the rules say a housing space must have a minimum of 40 square metres. Perhaps a compromise will be reached, pod housing is taking off in many cities; some offering designs that can be linked together.

2019 equine calendar launched Twelve stunning photographs of horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse and neglect feature in a new Spain’s Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre 2019 calendar. The non-profit Rojales rescue centre – which has more than 120 equine residents and has saved 16 horses, ponies and donkeys this year alone – hopes the calendar sales will help raise funds to replace its deteriorating and costly internal fences. The centre hopes to raise 5,000€ to complete stage one of its internal fencing replacement project. For every three calendars sold, the centre will be able to purchase an entire metre of strong and permanent Tornado Wire fencing. The calendar features photos the centre’s horses, ponies and donkeys kindly taken and donated by photographer Elaine Warnock. Said Elaine: “The 2019 calendar is a great way of raising awareness of how these animals have been previously treated and the photos are a testament to how they have been cared for and how beautiful they look today.” The limited-edition calendar was designed by volunteer Koren Helbig, meaning almost every cent raised from sales goes straight to the internal fence fundraiser. The calendar costs just 15€ and can be purchased at Easy Horse Care’s monthly open day or online (for delivery or pick-up from the centre’s charity stores) here: www.easyhorsecare.net/shops/online-shop/calendars/2019-rescued-equine-calendar. Good-quality furniture donations are currently sought for the centre’s charity stores, which are low on stock. Anyone interested in making a donation or volunteering can call Sue on 652 021 980. Located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga, 59, the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre opens to the public on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. Why do people take their own lives?

It was recently World Suicide Prevention Day so why do people take their own lives and what are some of the signs? It can be the result of problems building up to the point where they can see no other way to cope with what they’re experiencing. The kinds of problems that might put people at risk of suicide Signs someone may need support include: • recent loss or the break-up of a close relationship • an actual and/ or expected unhappy change in circumstances • painful and/ or disabling physical illness • heavy use of, or dependency on, alcohol or other drugs • history of earlier suicide attempts or self-harming • history of suicide in the family • depression What are the signs of someone being at risk of suicide? It’s not always possible to identify people who are going through emotional distress. However, some of the following signs may indicate someone is in poor emotional health: • lacking energy or appearing particularly tired • appearing more tearful • not wanting to talk or be with people • not wanting to do things they usually enjoy • a change in routine, such as sleeping or eating more or less than normal • using alcohol or drugs to cope with feelings • finding it hard to cope with everyday things • appearing restless and agitated • not liking or taking care of themselves or feeling they don’t matter • being un-typically clumsy or accident prone • becoming withdrawn or losing touch with friends and family

Sometimes people say things which might help you recognise they are struggling to cope: • making leading statements, such as ‘You wouldn’t believe what I’ve been through’ or ‘It’s like the whole world is against me’. People sometimes say these things in the hope you will pick up on them and ask what they mean, so that they can talk about it. • negative statements about themselves, such as ‘Oh, no one loves me’, or ‘I’m a waste of space’, even if it sounds like they are joking. If you notice these signs in yourself or in others then please consider contacting the Samaritans. They are there TO LISTEN. You can call Samaritans on Freephone 900 525 100 Email us at pat@samaritansinspain.com. Or call 634 328 612 to organise a WhatsApp call.

Cresta De Gallo Marcha 2108 on E-Bike Sunday 2 September 5.15am off goes my alarm clock and I’m up like a shot, teeth cleaned followed by a shave and a cuppa before heading down to the garage to collect my bike and kit ready to load into the van. 5 minutes later I’m outside Moth’s apartment where he’s already up waiting for me then round to Harry’s where he’s also outside waiting for us. We’re soon on the road heading for Cresta de Gallo in Murcia where the 3 of us are registered into this year’s Marcha. This is one of the shortest sportifs in Spain as it is a 6km warmup on the flat then straight into the climb up to the Monastery, which is called Fuenta Santa, through the forest before the climb starts proper, going up to 20% in parts. This year, due to having found out that I have arthritis in my right hip and require a hip replacement, I have been struggling to keep up with the guys, so I decided to take the Pinarello Nytro e-bike. Well to say that this was a godsend was an understatement, during the warmup we were travelling at 40km per hour, which I struggled to maintain as all e-bikes cut out at 25km an hour and, as it weights 13kgs it was a struggle for me to keep up with everyone. Once we hit the bottom of the hill, there were between 70-80 riders in front of me and only 4 behind, I switched on the power and immediately the bike surged forward allowing me to catch up with the peleton, it wasn’t long before I started passing them 2 or 3 at a time. Within 6 minutes I had overtaken the whole group except two semi-professionals who were right behind the pace car. By this time my heart was at 180bpm and I was going as fast as I could, still in the sitting position as I now find it too difficult to stand because of my hip problem. I had a quick drink and passed the two leaders who couldn’t believe that they were being overtaken, the pace car then had to speed up and I followed it. As we reached the top of the first crest the road dipped down and suddenly the electric cut out and I was pushing like hell up to 40k an hour. By this time, I was well in front and kept glancing in my mirror to see if anyone was catching up with me. We hit the 1km mark and I gave it all I had, pushing the bike up to 22km (I had no more power in my body to go any faster) right to the finish line and the cheers of the crowd. I had finished first by at least 1km and was chuffed to bits. This is the first sportif I have entered where e-bikes were allowed, there was no trophy for the winner of the e-bike class, however I didn’t care as I was first over the line and I felt that it was a level playing field, a 57 year old on an e-bike going like hell against 19-30 year olds. There weren’t many my age in this event as it’s considered too hard for most. Moth finished 10th overall and Harry was 15th, they both did remarkably well and all their hard training and dedication is paying off. Hopefully next year we will manage to get them into the Spanish racing circuit and hopefully I will have a new hip and back on a normal Pinarello. For anyone thinking about moving onto an e-bike trust me it is the way forward and allows you to cycle for longer, further and it makes it more enjoyable. If any of you who are reading this and are considering an e-bike please call in to Cyclogical to see Lynn or myself and we can arrange a test ride on the Nytro. Team “Cyclogical” meet every Tuesday and Thursday nights at 5.30pm and Sunday mornings at 8am and cover between 90 and 120kms at a moderate to fast pace so, if you fancy a challenge come along and join us. Looking to improve your fitness, riding ability and speed and also have a new group of friends to train with? Then why not come along and give it a try or call Gary on 637 487 377.

Forthcoming Events By Keith Nicol It’s that special time of year when it’s OK to dress up outrageously away from the golf course, dance in the streets, get out your broomstick, burn effigies in the back garden and let off a few fireworks. Yes, Halloween is at the end of the month, followed by a public holiday on 1 November for All Saints Day, so it’s all a bit of good fun. There are also two public holidays – 9 and 12 October. Being also Half Term in the UK and Ireland, many families will be in the region enjoying the Halloween season. Torrevieja’s main streets are expected to come alive with Flash – Mob Dancing from about 9pm on Halloween Night, as the King of Pop, Michael Jackson leads the dancing through the streets with a host of local dancers, all in their zombie attire, performing Thriller and other great seasonal tunes. A fun night in the town centre. Other town Halls have organised their own Zombie Nights for the youngsters in their towns too. The town of San Miguel de Salinas is celebrating their final weekend of their annual fiesta. On Saturday 6 October it’s Equestrian Day at the Recinto Feria on Ctra. Campoamor near the Castle starting at 11.30am with a Horse and Carriage Parade through the streets of the town followed at noon by Equestrian Games. On Sunday 7 October they celebrate the end of the fiesta with a Giant Paella in the Plaza Jaime I with live music. Pilar de la Horadada have been celebrating their patron saint, the Virgen del Pilar for the last month and their program of events comes to an end during October, with a Grand Carnival Parade from Calle Mayor to Calle San Juan, starting at 8pm. There are dozens of activities usually planned throughout the month, with their grand parade on the holiday, 12 October. If you’re a music fan, and in particular Jazz and Blues, you won’t want to miss the 38th Edition of the Cartagena Jazz Festival which starts on 2 November, with more details to be found here, next month. All the information is available on the website www.jazzcartagena.es. Every Saturday at 12.30pm you can also enjoy free concerts in the Plaza del Icue, while on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night there are other free concerts around the city. Still to be confirmed as we went to press, is GastroVegaBaja 2018. GastroVegaBaja is a festival in which Gastronomy and Culture unite and usually takes place at the end of October in Salones Bahia Costa, La Mata, Torrevieja. During this event there will be tasters, workshops, cooking demonstrations, gastronomic debates and plenty of fun for the whole family. Doors are open from 11.30am to 6.30pm. There a couple of interesting and varied events happening at Torrevieja’s International Auditorium in October. One of note is most certainly their mini-Jazz Festival, and the artist that is possibly of most interest to an International Audience is Kyle Eastwood, musician son of the ultra-famous, Clint Eastwood. Kyle Eastwood is considered one of the best bassists in contemporary jazz. His career, as eclectic as it is brilliant, has led

QF Focus Magazine him to play in the best and most prestigious jazz festivals in the world. Striking and modern, his latest work ‘In Transit’ has many virtues. Enthusiasts will see in it the blueprint for a contemporary form of jazz that encompasses melodic richness and groove, while purists, in addition to enjoying original compositions, will be able to wander through history thanks to some fascinating versions of Count Basie, Monk and Mingus. Tickets for this concert cost 20€. There is a bonus for the three concerts of the “Torrevieja Suena a Jazz” cycle at 30€. https://auditoriotorrevieja.com. Staying at the Auditorium, still in its planning stages just before we went to press, is Torrevieja’s Clubs and Associations Day. It’s an opportunity to find out more about what’s happening at dozens of the region’s local clubs and societies. More info at: www.Torrevieja.Club. It’s hoped that this will be part of Expo Torrevieja, depending on space. And last but not least, the IV Expo Torrevieja, the Southern Costa Blanca’s premier Lifestyle and Home Living show, takes place in the impressive foyer of Torrevieja’s International Auditorium, beside QuironSalud Hospital. With over 70 stalls offering the very best in products and services to enhance your quality of life here on the Costas, it’s a great opportunity to find out more about what’s on offer from local suppliers and services, under one roof. And yes: it is all under cover, so inclement weather is not an issue. The Auditorium has parking for more than 500 cars. Admission and parking are free. The doors are open from 10am until 3pm on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October. More information at: www.ExpoTorrevieja.com. Get out there and enjoy something a little bit different as Christmas and the New Year will soon be upon us. Don’t forget it’s Halloween on 31 October. Boo... All information is correct at the time of going to print. We advise you to check for any changes which are beyond our control.
