Mars - a planet with a past Last month I wrote about a big red spot on Jupiter, this month it's a small red planet in our night skies. Many people will have noticed a bright object in the South after sunset, looking a little more carefully, you'll notice it has a distinctly red tinge, hence the nickname of the 'Red Planet' for Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun. It gets its colour from lots of iron in the dust that covers so much of the planet, but I can't imagine the nickname 'the rusty planet' would have caught on. Let’s dispel a couple of myths about Mars. Obviously, there are no Martians, no strange objects that NASA is covering up, no long lost civilisations. I know that should be obvious, but to hear some people talk..... oh well. Martian canals? Over 100 years ago Lowell, an American astronomer reported seeing canals. Actually, this was a misunderstanding of the Italian word canali, meaning lines, first used by an astronomer called Schiaparelli. They were just an effect of the poor optics used back then. This myth died before I was born. Now on to some facts, which are much more amazing than myths. I'll start with the very recent discovery of an underground lake, about 20 kilometres across. This feature is an astounding discovery, made by one of the space probes that orbit Mars, but it's likely to be just the first, astronomers think that it's likely that several more will be found. We probably shouldn't be too surprised, there's plenty of water in space. It's in the asteroids, the rings of Saturn, and even on our Moon. Naturally, this discovery has got people speculating about the possibility of microscopic life preserved in pockets of water, and it really is a possibility. How likely it is neither I nor anyone else knows. One thing is certain though, confirmation that there is or isn't will be a hugely important part of mankind's quest for knowledge. Regrettably, I expect to be long gone before the matter is settled. Mars used to have rivers, and blooming big ones they must have been. When I was younger, any idea that the huge valleys seen by the first space probes were made by water were dismissed as nonsense. Nowadays, we have superb images and maps of Mars, and not just the river valleys, but alluvial deposits and plains are all there to be seen. The downside to all this, is that the rivers mostly vanished long before mankind came down from the trees, probably billions of years ago. The biggest mountain ever discovered is on Mars, Mons Olympus. Actually, it's a volcano, but whether it's still active no-one is certain. It reaches up around 25 kilometres, two and a half times the height of Everest and nearly out of the atmosphere. If you could put it on Earth, the base would cover most of Spain. One thing is certain about Mars, I'll never be sure about what surprise discovery will come next, and any guess I make will probably be wrong, such is the nature of nature. Now, where can I get a Tardis, I'd dearly love to fly over that strange world, say about 2 billion years ago. Vega Baja Astronomy Group

Our family life looks set to be taking on some dramatic changes as my little angel has recently turned into a teenager, which makes me wonder just how long she will still be “my little angel”? I've asked her to defy the odds by not changing but wonder whether I am just simply asking too much ….all sympathies will be greatly appreciated! Schools are set to return in the very near future which in turn means a return to normal life for us all for yet another year, although predictions for the unusual and sometimes unbearable weather is set to continue well into October. At least if we want to venture to the beach it shouldn't be overcrowded and parking will once again be possible. I know everyone has suffered with the heat this summer and most have found it uneasy to sleep. However, for the majority of the summer I have had to put up with a very noisy ceiling fan which kept me awake for most of each night clicking away. After several complaints to my other half to have a look at it and see if it can be stopped, he eventually solved the problem (although it took a client to ask him to look at theirs with the same problem to prompt him). Shortly after, the ceiling fan in my little angels room blew up so they were swapped around and therefore we currently have none in our room ...I wonder how long it will take to rectify this situation? On the plus side, my other half has taken to sleeping on the sofa under the air-con, so I do have the bed to myself! Congratulations to Kim Kilbey from Pinar de Campoverde who won last month's 50€ competition after spotting the logo on page 18. See if you can spot the logo in this issue for a chance to win 50€, see inside for details of how to enter. Good luck!

How to avoid Inheritance Tax in Spain between Spouses and their UK resident children This is a short article this month as I am writing from my native Jersey where I am visiting family and friends. There are no capital gains taxes or inheritance taxes here in Jersey on investments or property, but Spanish law is not that generous, so that is why we use Spanish Compliant Bonds to generate an income and avoid inheritance tax between spouses and defer any capital gains taxes. Below is a summary of benefits of our most popular Spanish Tax Compliant investment product especially built for Spanish resident British ex-pats by The Prudential, which is held in Ireland. Key benefits: • Expected Returns will be published by the Prudential on 26th August 2018 and I will write about those next month (circa 4% p.a.) • Employs a mechanism to smooth returns which is excellent for inexperienced investors. • Avoidance of inheritance tax liabilities between spouses if written as a joint policy. • If your Spanish Will contains the UK law of succession clause then your UK resident heirs will only pay Inheritance tax per UK rules on the passing of this bond. In most cases this will be Nil. • Option to give a regular monthly or quarterly income. • Entire investment can be liquidised in 10 working days if required at any time. • All income tax deduction and reporting is done for you in Spain (no need for an accountant). • The Spanish Modelo 720 asset declaration of this product is done for you. • Portable should you move back to UK or elsewhere. • Investment in € euro or £ sterling (minimum £20,000 or €25,000). • 1.5% allocation bonus for investments over £150,000 (immediately worth £152,250). Age Concern Need Additional Volunteers They say giving is better than receiving. By just giving 3 or 4 hours a week of your time volunteering for Age Concern, means many people can receive a little support, friendship and comfort. Most of us are retired and soaking up the good life here in Spain, after working a lifetime, but we hear so often that we miss having something worthwhile to occupy ourselves. Now is your opportunity to make a difference to people not so fortunate to have a huge circle of friends to fill our days. We seek drivers, preferably with a Spanish driving licence, but not absolutely necessary, to drive one of our two vehicles, collecting beneficiaries from their homes and bringing them to our centre in La Siesta for their coffee mornings and then taking them home. Also, to collect donations of small household items destined for distribution to our shops. A very interesting vacancy exists in our lending library at our centre. We need one or two book loving people to act as librarians managing our library, assisting book borrowers and generally maintaining the book shelves and stock. The library is only open every Tuesday from 10.30am – 12.30pm. Our charity shop in Patricio Zammit Street in Torrevieja is extremely busy every day and would welcome several volunteers to deal with multinational customers. Serving, dealing with displays and stock rotation, this role would suit anyone with retail experience and you would work with an extremely friendly team. Shop is open Monday – Friday 10.30am – 1.30pm and you may choose which day suits you best and if you speak a foreign language that would be a distinct advantage, but not absolutely necessary. Our centre in La Siesta, the hub of Age Concern, offers people a host of activities almost on a daily basis and needs one or two additional volunteers to help mornings from 10am – 1.30pm. Every day is different here as you could be making tea or coffee, welcoming people bringing in donations, helping someone with finding information to their particular query, mixing with regular beneficiaries and joining in with their chat, keeping the centre tidy and free from obstacles, assisting with the hiring out of mobility aids and their return, and even possibly helping with fundraising events. Always different every day, so you won’t get bored. All positions are open to ladies and gents. To apply, in the first instance telephone 96 678 6887 Monday – Friday between 10am – 1.30pm to arrange a convenient day and time to pop in and find out how you can help, days, times etc. Your help is invaluable to those not as fortunate as most of us.

Are you Invisible? Do you feel that you have become almost invisible as to who you really are …..or who you want to be? The disappearing act can happen slowly and may take a while. Then one day, you realise you don't know who you are anymore! Here are some questions to ask yourself to check if you feel you have lost yourself. 1. Do you say what you really mean? Are you communicating from your heart? Sometimes we can slip into a pattern of saying what is expected of us and what we say may not be what we really think or feel. If you see that you are not saying what you really think and feel, pay attention first of all to who you are trying to please by speaking as you do. Figure out what the costs are for not saying what you mean. Make a decision to change your approach and speak from your real self, the self you know you really are. To discover who you really are, you may need professional help to learn how to get back or move forward to who you really want to be. 2. Do you take the initiative? When was the last time you made a suggestion to a friend or your family or your spouse about an idea or activity? Do you rely on everyone else to make a proposal about vacation places, buying choices, ways to spend group time? What are the things you really enjoy doing? Spend some time remembering what makes you happy. Perhaps then you can plan something. 3. Do you take care of everyone else first? It is not possible to take care of everyone else first and still have time to take care of you. Loving yourself enough to take care of yourself is not selfish or foolish ….it is necessary to have enough self esteem to be able to deal effectively with everything else in life with your head held high. By taking care of yourself, I mean include things that bring meaning to you. Do you like yourself? YOU should be in control of your own life …that way you can work towards everything that is good for you …..if that is really what you want! Take care! ….until the next time.

Book Review by Ivor Kindle

Book Titles: 1. Conquest 2. Crusade 3. Anarchy Author: Stewart Binns Publisher: Penguin Books. The year is 1066...Harold, having just beaten the Danes at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, marches his army down to Senlac Ridge to do battle with the Norman invader William. The battle becomes a centerpoint date in English history. Within Harold's army is one Hereward of Bourne..(the Wake) ...he survives the battle and escapes the battlefield. This is just the start of a fabulous trilogy of inter linked books ...through all three books the characters change as the years advance giving the reader a great view of early English/ Norman history. As the titles suggest the plot moves to the first Crusades and onward to a wonderful generational leap in the make up of the family of both Hereward the Wake and the family of William the Conqueror. These books are both a brilliant story and a wonderful insight into the history of Early England ...the Norman conquest and the history of both near and far Europe and the Middle East. I have read these three books in a matter of a week or so ...they are that good to read. Search the charity shops and the markets ...excellent reading.

...keep reading Ivor Kindle.

A View From The Top

Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. It ain't half hot Mum. The title of this piece is of course pinched from the wonderful TV series of the same name ...Windsor Davies et al kept me enthralled with their portrayal of a Wartime concert party in India during World War II. This narrative however is bang up to date and is concerned with the roastingly hot summer us natives of South Western Spain experienced. I don’t know about you Dear Reader, but I have been living here in and around the Quesada/ Benijofar area for many years and to date this was the most sweaty, uncomfortable and downright tiring Summer I can remember. My appetite all but went ...the thought of food centred around ...another slice of toast (ironic I know) or maybe a cold drink and a biscuit and God forbid even my appetite for a cold glass of beer took a downturn ...although I still made an extra effort as far as a beer was concerned. The good thing is that my attempt to eat better after my health problems of late last year

was easier to manage simply because I was not as hungry. I had also had to make a special effort to drink several glasses of water each day ...it does help to drink lots of water albeit that the price is that I can never be more than X distance from a public loo, or at least a private tree. Another price of the long hot summer will of course manifest itself in the cost of the electric bill. Fans going all day and air conditioning running at night just to enable a night’s sleep ...although that said, it is difficult to sleep even with air conditioning because their comes a point when the air con just gets too cold. Yes, yes, I do know that air conditioning can be programmed via timers and sleep controls ...but have you tried to read those manuals that come with air con units? Driving around the urbanisations, one thing that stands out are the number of new and refurbished houses that are being worked on. I remember a time here when in August nothing was worked upon or a least almost nothing. Those days seem to have gone as demand for houses and the lure of the filthy lucre alter the traditions of work in Southern Spain. Whilst we are on about new houses etc ...have you ever wondered where all the additional water and electricity that will be needed

QF Focus Magazine will come from? I still remember the days here when the toaster and the electric kettle could not be used at the same time ...ok the electricity will probably be maintained due to the massive investment on power cables and local supply networks that have been carried out over the past fifteen years or so ...but what about the water ...how many months a year can we in South West Spain go without a decent amount of rainfall? The plan of many years ago was to siphon some of the immense water reserves of the River Douro in Northern Spain and send this water via reservoirs and pipelines down to the water needy of Southern Spain. This plan was cancelled when the Partido Popular won a distant election and cancelled the PSOE's plan to provide water via the above mentioned scheme. In this part of Spain Torrevieja now has a water desalination plant that provides somewhere around the 135,000m3 mark of water per day ...this water production rate could be trebled to around the 360,000m3 rate per day with further investment of 45 million euros. Information gleaned from the wonderfully titled "Water and Wastewater International Magazine". So perhaps all is not lost and the future for us in semi arid South West Spain is one of hope and yes, I am afraid to say Sunshine. The Morandi Bridge ...Genoa. I would imagine that like me you watched in shock and horror at the terrible events surrounding the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa. At the time of writing, the investigation as to the actual cause of the bridge collapse is ongoing and no definitive cause has been offered for the structural failure of the bridge. The death toll has risen as more victims have been discovered and as I write stands at 39 persons. What really got under my skin was the fact that, like many of us current residents of Spain, in our early days of exploration we used to drive as a family through France into Spain and onward to our

Page 15 Southern Spain destination. We used to cross many large, long and structurally enormous bridges on our route South. I just sat and thought of the horror of driving along an enormous road bridge only to see the road in front of you disappear...what can you do? The answer is probably nothing. What I will do is say my prayers on behalf of the people who lost their lives in this tragic event...I will also pray for Italy and its people. One last point...if you google "Bridge collapses" you will find a Wikipedia article that notes the number of bridge collapses over a number of years. I started to count forward from the year 2000 and had to stop as the number was too many for me to reasonably highlight in this article ...just to say that in Italy alone this was the tenth bridge collapse in the last five years. Are we building bridges correctly?

Our house, our refuge, our castle ... In short, our home Not everyone knows that taking out a home policy is not mandatory except when the house is mortgaged. That is the only situation that requires a person to have a policy that protects their home in Spain. However, it is worth saying that, although it is not mandatory, it is advisable and necessary to be prepared for any eventuality. Our home is our most precious asset and if we want to avoid surprises and unforeseen events, it is important to get an insurance that gives us the peace of mind knowing that whatever happens in our home there will be someone who is responsible for solving it. The first thing you should know is that you do not have to contract your home insurance with the entity that is granting you the mortgage but you can compare prices in the market and hire the product that provides the coverage that best suits your needs.

Until a couple of years ago, banking entities could condition their mortgage lending with an "obligation" to contract some linked products, such as the home insurance. But now, with the approval by the European Parliament of the Mortgage Credit Directive, banks are prohibited by law from linking a mortgage to the purchase of insurance. Your insurance company might include a clause in your policy registering your lending bank as mortgage beneficiary, to cope with the request of the bank. Then, the key question is, what is the best insurance for my house? In this article we give you the keys so that you can make the best decision when taking out your home policy insurance. The value of the Building There are two criteria to assess a home insurance policy: the building and contents. The ‘Building’ section of your policy refers to the costs of rebuilding your home, not to the market value or the cadastral value. However, it is of key importance to declare the whole size of the property, according to the cadastral property details.

The value of the Contents The ‘Contents’ section of your policy refers to economic valuation of all the household goods: furniture, including kitchen furniture, electronic devices, musical instruments, jewellery or other objects of special value. Check that the imputed valued of the content can cover the value of all those things. Although in many cases the sentimental value is higher than the economic one, the best advice is to add all the important items in the content to secure them. Special features Besides worrying about the Building and the Contents, there are other very interesting and useful covers to consider that not all insurance companies offer. Liberty Seguros is offering among others the following great covers: • Up to 1000€ compensation for the additional water consumption costs due to water leakage when you take out their premium home policy. • An unrivalled DIY Service, to avoid the hassle of assembling packed furniture, fitting curtain poles, hanging pictures, etc. • Damage to your garden furniture, even it has been damaged by adverse weather conditions. • Your goods will be insured on a "value as new basis". • Legal defence, claims for damages and IT assistance service. • Home assistance, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with just a simple and FREE telephone call on 900 243 657, in English or German. • A return ticket to your home in Spain if you are abroad in your home country should an unforeseen claim happen. Apart from all these advantages, Liberty Seguros has an extensive network of over 300 brokers and agents that are dedicated to providing unbiased, friendly and expert advice, because every home is different and such an important decision deserves a face to face chat with a professional insurance advisor, in your own language, to discuss the most suitable cover for your home in the sun.

Health checks – Your answer to a faster, cleaner and healthier PC Is your computer running very slow? Are you considering putting on a kettle [not that it would suit you!] to make a cuppa whilst opening an application? Do you get annoying windows popping up? Well it’s time to call in the Health check A-Team! However, before you say “hmmm, I don’t think I would like to spend any money just yet” let me tell you, it will only get worse, yes worse! Whilst you decide on whether you need to have your PC cleaned of those annoying bits of software let me explain the differences between the types of infections you will experience over time. Adware Adware is the name given to programs that are designed to display advertisements on your computer, redirect your search requests to advertising websites and collect marketing-type data about you – for example, the types of websites that you visit – so that customised adverts can be displayed. Spyware Programs that secretly record what you do on your computer are called spyware. They can be used for some perfectly legitimate purposes, but the majority of spyware is malicious. Its aim is usually to capture passwords, banking credentials and credit card details - and send them over the internet to fraudsters. ‘Spyware’ is the generic name we give to programs that contain additional functionality designed to secretly monitor your activities on your computer. Malware The term malware is a contraction of malicious software. Put simply, malware is any piece of software that was written with the intent of doing harm to data, devices or to people. When you hear talk of viruses, Trojans, spyware and the like, what you're really hearing is talk of different kinds of malware.

Virus Attacks A computer virus is a type of malicious code or program written to alter the way a computer operates and that is designed to spread from one computer to another. A virus operates by inserting or attaching itself to a legitimate program or document that supports macros in order to execute its code. In the process a virus has the potential to cause unexpected or damaging effects, such as harming the system software by corrupting or destroying data. How do these get onto one’s computer? Well, I hate to say via various ways such as free software (nothing’s ever free!), jokes sent from one person to another from a contact list using email (my pet hate!), dodgy websites (porn sites, betting sites, football sites, attachments etc.). One final note my friends, DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT accept any calls from callers pretending to be Microsoft, Apple etc. as they do not have the time to call us minions, so just slam the phone down. Also, DO NOT click on any suspected links in an email unless it is from a valid source. How often should I have my PC or laptop Health checked? Answer – Minimum once a year. Recommended twice a year. That’s me done for another month folks. Remember, be careful out there!

our ARIES Things are becoming less frantic and at last you may have some time for yourself. Use it wisely or it will just pass by with nothing being achieved. That doesn't mean to say you can't just read a book or watch that film you have been wanting to see. Just don't waste it away! TAURUS If you are thinking of making some changes in the home, now may not be the best time to do it. Are you really that unhappy with the way it is or is it just a reaction to an extreme set of circumstances you may never have again. GEMINI After a stressful time things seem to be settling down and you can start to think to the future instead of just surviving the moment. Plan carefully and you really could see some amazing times ahead. CANCER A monetary misunderstanding has left you in a awkward position. Being firm but fair will not solve it completely, but will put things back on some kind of road to resolution. LEO After all the fun and excitement of recent months it seems a bit too quiet in your world at the moment. There is still plenty going on if you go and look for it, and it could bring you new interests and friends. VIRGO Look around and get those jobs done that you have been putting off over the summer. Apart from things looking and working much better the sense of achievement will give you the boost to tackle some others.

oroscope LIBRA Don't let someone close to you manipulate you into doing something you are not sure about. Take more time to think it through before you make your final decision. In the end you may do exactly what they wanted, just make sure it's what you want. SCORPIO Your social scene will take off over the next month and you will be the life and soul of the party. You deserve it as it has been all work and no play recently. The summer has made you rethink your work, play balance once and for all. SAGITTARIUS Putting all your energy into one thing could mean you are neglecting too much. Take care otherwise you will be playing catch up for a long time. Check your finances, you may have to tighten your belt a little after splashing out over summer. CAPRICORN New ideas and opportunities make you rethink the direction you are going. A little tweak or a radical change may make all the difference to your future. Not doing anything will mean more of the same. AQUARIUS Emotions are running high so you need to keep calm and clear headed or you will not be able to stop yourself saying exactly what you think. This may seem like a good idea, but it's not. PISCES Team work always seems like hard work but with a change of just a few players things are now running much more smoothly. It's now up to everyone to keep it that way and not let things start to slip again.

Before you buy CBD Oil, ask these questions! In the last of our series of articles we thought it would be best to reiterate what to look out for when buying CBD either through a shop, personally or the internet. First, remember CBD oil is not regulated and as such there is the usual mix of price, quality, false claims, potential hazard of not knowing what is in the oil, and at worst risking prosecution for possession of a class B drug as CBD oil can be extracted from many different varieties of the Cannabis plant family. Possession of a class B drug can lead to anything from an on the spot fine of 90 pounds to a maximum jail term of 5 years. What does this mean for you and how do you avoid these potential problems? CBD oil is legal under European Legislation as long as it complies with the following; 1. Extracted from industrial Hemp 2. Marketed and sold as a food supplement 3. Contains less than 0.2% THC (Tetra Hydro Cannabinol) – the psychoactive component of Cannabis. Point 3 above is where a lot of the current products on the market have an issue. If you are stopped at Customs etc. it is your responsibility to prove the THC content. If this cannot be proved then the CBD oil will no doubt be confiscated and you could be prosecuted. If you are buying CBD oil from a person or the internet make sure you can print off a copy of the laboratory report that refers to the specific batch number that your CBD oil has come from. If there is no batch number on the oil you are looking to buy our advice is do not buy it! If there is a batch code on the bottle, ask for a copy of the lab report. This lab report should show that the oil contains less than 0.2% THC. As a supplier of CBD oil across Europe we have had several orders held at UKBA (United Kingdom Border Authority) and have had several conversations with various police officers allocated to the UKBA investigations. On every occasion the orders have been released back into the post and delivered to our customers, simply because we can supply lab report evidence proving the content of the product. Simply remember, NO lab report, NO buy! Some CBD oil may appear a bargain at first glance, but our advice is, no lab report, don’t take the risk. Beyond the legal requirements, and in our opinion even more importantly, if you are buying CBD oil without a batch code and lab report, how do you know what you are putting in your body? By all means try CBD oil, it has been seen to benefit many people suffering from stress, anxiety, sleep problems, high blood pressure, joint pain, arthritis, skin conditions, digestive problems etc. We simply ask that you do your research. Genius Hemp are not qualified medical practitioners or doctors and always advise people to speak to their doctor before using CBD oil. Angel Card Readings Most people these days have heard of Tarot cards but few are aware of Angel Cards. All cards whether it be Tarot, Angel, Unicorn or Goddess cards are collectively known as “Oracle” cards. When the ancient Greeks required help and guidance in their daily lives, they turned to their “Oracle” which was originally a sacred place where they could speak to their Gods or a particular person who had the power of divination. This second type of Oracle is where the Oracle cards draw their inspiration from and are therefore read by people to divine or read the future and answer any questions that the person has. Oracle cards gained in popularity in France during the 18th century when a well known fortune teller Madame Lenormand began using Oracle cards for private readings to influential people and these included Napoleon Bonaparte, Tsar Alexander 1 and Empress Josephine. Unlike Tarot, Oracle cards do not follow any kind of strict structure which allows people the freedom to develop their own cards and to read them inspirationally. In modern day society Oracle cards have become extremely popular and some of the cards that are available today are based not only on Angels but Fairies, Flowers and Mermaids. An Angel Card Reading with Tricia will take approximately one hour and will be on a one to one basis in the privacy of her healing room. This is very much a confidential reading and the sitter is free to ask personal questions of the cards. During a reading, Tricia will also use psychometry as well as interpreting the card messages and may also receive messages from their dearly departed loved ones. Messages from the Angel Cards are always uplifting, positive, and are a way to help people connect to and receive Divine messages from the Angels or loved ones. These beautiful card messages are inspirational, motivational and give guidance to a person’s problem. Tricia is also happy to conduct Angel Card Readings to small parties of people, either in their home or at Tricia’s room in Quesada.

Making a difference to someone’s life by Good Care Group carer Marie Woodward I started working as a live-in carer just over 4 years ago at the age of 49 after my personal circumstances changed. A friend of mine suggested it. I had never done any care work before other than bringing up my daughter and wasn’t sure if I was the type of person they would be looking for. My background was administration and I had also done bar/ restaurant work. In the beginning I worked for a different company for a year, but I was not happy there. I contacted The Good Care Group after seeing an advert in the local media and a friend of mine had just moved to them and said how good they were. I arranged to meet up with Anne. We got on so well from the moment we met and chatted for ages over coffee and cake! The training course was very comprehensive and although I had been doing the job for a year before, I learnt so much. They make the training interesting and are very knowledgeable which gives you confidence in the company from the start. It wasn’t long after I finished training that I was given my first placement. I was given a copy of the care plan and was fully informed of the client’s needs and wishes. I was fully supported as I settled into the placement. The company try to place their carers with like minded people and if you have a preferred area then they will also try to accommodate that. I go back to the same client every time and work for 2 weeks then have 2 weeks off. The same carer goes for 2 weeks whilst I’m at home and this is great for the client as she has continuity. To feel like you are making a difference to someone’s life is the best feeling in the world. The most normal things we do ourselves every day without thinking about it, like getting dressed, can be a huge achievement for someone else. To know that you have been instrumental in enabling them to achieve that is amazing. It is the most challenging and rewarding job I have ever done. For more information about becoming a carer with The Good Care Group, contact Anne Greatrex on 96 571 3746 or 628 343 240 or email anne.greatrex@thegoodcaregroup.com.

HELP Vega Baja aims for “green bags”

Following new legislation that shops (including charities) must charge customers for plastic bags, HELP Vega Baja thought they would look for an alternative solution. After looking for sponsorship, President Michele Masson met up with the José Miguel Perez from Grupo ASV and discovered that both organisations wanted to do what they could to help the environment. “We are keen to do what we can, not only to help keep costs down for the charity but to consider the environment too. When we met with José it was wonderful to hear that he shared the same views and we agreed to work together to produce carrier bags made of paper! Grupo ASV covered the cost of the bags and we were delighted to take delivery of 1,000 bags last week. As charities now have to charge for plastic bags, the situation can be a little crazy. For example, we have heard from other charities that in some cases customers insist on new bags as they have to pay rather than accept used bags that are often donated to charities. Sadly, this could lead to charities having to purchase plastic bags which obviously negates the whole benefit of the legislation. The sponsorship and support we received from Grupo ASV has been terrific and the bags are now available in our shop in San Miguel. We still ask that customers bring along their own bags when shopping and any donations for the paper bags will go towards future stocks. The aim of the charity is to go completely “plastic free” for bags and we are working towards this”. If you would like to find out more about sponsoring HELP Vega Baja with any of their projects (bags, leaflets, posters etc), volunteering or if you have a group and you would like the team to come along to give a talk on the charity, please contact their San Miguel Centre on 96 672 3733 or Michele Masson direct on president@helpvegabaja.com or 661 365 606. Journalist and broadcaster Jack Troughton plays ‘Johnny Foreigner’ and casts an eye over Spain and focuses on stories that serve as a gentle reminder he remains an Englishman abroad. Travel broadens the mind Catalonia’s deposed president Carlos Puigdemont has thanked German hosts for an “enriching” experience while enjoying an enforced break within its borders – and at one time within a prison cell.

He was on a return journey from Finland to his home-in-exile in Belgium when he had his collar felt, the ‘feds’ acting on an international arrest warrant issued by Madrid - the Catalonia leader was forced to flee Spain after declaring independence - and was behind bars in Germany for 10 days before being granted bail. And he was quick to praise the German legal system after an extradition request from Spain was rejected; a judge ruled he could not be sent back to Spain as a charge of ‘rebellion’ was not recognised in Deutschland. Following a change at the helm in Madrid, the warrant has now been withdrawn against Carlos and some of his chums now living abroad. Retreating back to his base at Waterloo, Mr Puigdemont has resumed the battle for independence and is now free to wander most parts of Europe ...although he is still a wanted man in Spain where the charges of rebellion and misuse of public funds are outstanding. Back in Catalonia itself, his successor as leader, Quim Torra, has underlined that he considers Mr Puigdemont to be the “legitimate president” of the region that would be independent. And the separatists are currently basking in warmer relations with Madrid and the new socialist government headed by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. However, the two sides remain poles apart over the demand for another poll on independence; “unconstitutional” the country’s leaders continue to repeat. Back in Belgium, President Puigdemont has called for the PM to do his homework, warning that once the summer holidays and the honeymoon is over, things will again get serious. Meanwhile on the beaches of Catalonia, separatists are reminded there are two sides to every story. It has become fashionable to lie on a beach towel in the yellow and red of Spain and emblazoned with the country’s coat of arms under an umbrella in the same colours. The silly season (part 1) Feeding frenzy amongst Fleet Street’s finest as a pensioner reveals her Benidorm break was ruined by “too many Spaniards” at the Poseidon Playa and has complained to Thomas Cook – with a demand for a full refund of the £1,133 she and her friend paid for the (May) trip. Retired care assistant Freda Jackson, 81, complained the hotel was full of “rude” Spanish holidaymakers who “really got on our nerves” and wondered why the natives did not head somewhere else for a break. Seizing on the comments about the “disaster”, British newspapers played down more genuine complaints that the two friends had asked for a hotel on the flat rather than in the hills because of mobility issues and had be moved to the second floor from the 14th for the same reason – to cap it all, apparently there were no reps to help sort out the mess. Thomas Cook has offered the pair a gesture of goodwill – a payment of £566 to share – and is investigating the inconvenience caused by the booking. The silly season (part 2) British redtop tabloids again broke sweat with stories about Spanish ‘sickos’ encouraging Brits to test their sporting skills and indulge in the deadly craze of ‘balconing’.

Leaping off balconies in an attempt to plunge into the waters of a swimming pool or to reach another balcony is an unusual test of Newton physics and, sadly, it has cost lives. However, posters and graffiti in Barcelona, Magaluf and Ibiza are appearing, as part of the growing campaign to control tourist numbers because locals are priced out of the property market, and the drunken antics of visitors. Anyone appreciating the darker side of Spanish humour might actually consider it all very tongue in cheek. One poster read: “Dear tourist, did you know balconing prevents gentrification, improves neighbours’ quality of life, reduces the risk of heart disease and is lots of fun?” In reality balconing is illegal, and many resorts have outlawed the practice with people facing fines over the deadly practice ...presumably those caught about to jump and those who survive a leap of faith. The silly season (part 3) August has come and gone. The coast is clear and there is room to stretch out, breathe and relax. It’s been another bumper summer for the tourism industry and all the businesses that rely on visitors have hopefully enjoyed another successful high season – and it has been fun too, just ‘people watching’ as the annual invasion takes place. However, it is nice to actually have room to put an elbow on the bar, be able to find a table at the local restaurant, and park the car somewhere actually in the vicinity of a place called home.

Hi All! This month I’d like to feature a band that was formed earlier this year, Called “Karma”. It comprises of greatly respected and talented musicians, with a vast experience. Some are already known on the local circuit, having previously played in some of the best tribute / cover bands around. Karma was the brainchild of Ray Prentice, with the goal of creating a great live 5 piece covers band. Each member of the band was handpicked by Ray. The members of Karma all have a passion to play great music from the 1960s to present day, including classic numbers from Bryan Adams, Fleetwood Mac, U2, Bruce Springsteen, TOTO, ZZ Top, Tina Turner, The Police, Status Quo, Stevie Wonder, ABBA, and many more legendary acts. Karma performs some of the biggest songs ever, with complete skill and dedication and brilliant musicianship, to bring you the ultimate live music performance.

QF Focus Magazine The line up of the band is as follows : Sue Greenwood - Lead Vocals. Sue is a well known, professional and much loved established artiste in her own right. She has fronted her own renowned shows for the past 5 years here in Spain and has built a reputation as a great performer. She has charisma, a great stage presence, and a voice to match. Terry Luckett (The Rocket) - Lead Guitarist and backing vocals. He began playing with local bands throughout his teens. In 1972 Terry joined original band “Rock Machine”, turning professional, and touring the U.K., Europe and Scandinavia. With Rock Machine Terry and the band played support to major artistes at the time such as Spade, Colin Bluntstone (The Zombies), Argent and many other well known artistes. His influences are guitarists who play from the heart - Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton etc. Iryna Luckett - Keyboards. Iryna was born in Russia and was classically trained from an early age, graduating to the highest degree. She has played all forms of classical genres, from orchestral, ensemble, up to the role of principal pianist. Iryna toured annually in Russia, Europe and the Middle East. In addition to this she also played rock piano on all “Ultimate Thunder” and “Legend” shows. Ray Prentice - Drums and backing vocals. Ray started playing Drums as a 12 year old. He’s performed in many bands, playing a wide variety of styles from Jazz to Rock. Since moving to Spain he has played in several local bands, including Soul Power, P.D.Q., Indiana Highway, and is currently working in well established bands, Klassix, Slydr as well as playing in Karma. Ray’ s influences are all great Drummers from bands such as Deep Purple, Steely Dan, to the Eagles. Last, but certainly not least is: Peter Fryer - Bass Guitar and backing vocals. Peter learnt his musical trade as a British Army musician, playing Tuba, Double Bass and Electric Bass. Following his army career he played continually for many years in and around London, playing all genres and styles in Cabaret and Dance Venues. He also played support to artistes such as Shirley Bassey, The Three Degrees amongst others. Peter then moved to Jersey where he maintained a high profile on the music circuit there. Since moving to Spain, He has played in Union Gap UK, and has supported Leo Sayer. Peter’s influences are Jack Bruce, John Paul Jones, Geezer Butler, to name a few. What more can I say. If you want to experience this newly formed, fantastic 5 piece band, keep watching the local press for up coming performances. Alternatively, have a look on their Facebook “Karma” site. Bye for now, D.P.

27th Edition Miguel Indurain Sportif 2018 On Friday 20 July four of us left the shop at 4.30am, our mechanic Harry Morrow, Martyn Stone and stepson Mathew Moth Robertson all set to travel the 700kms to Pamplona in Navarra for the 2019 Pinarello roadshow and the 27th edition Miguel Indurain Sportif. It was an early start and a long journey however without any problems and quiet roads we arrived at our hotel safely at 12 noon where we immediately noticed the change in temperature, it was 10 degrees colder up here. We unloaded our bikes and checked in to our rooms then proceeded to the dining room for lunch as we were absolutely famished. After lunch we drove 10km to Pinarello’s factory where we were treated like royalty by the staff. We had cheese and wine and were shown round the factory before seeing the exciting new 2019 Pinarello range, including new e-bikes and the reborn Prince superbike. All dealers were given a 2019 model Pinarello Gan Disk with Ultegra groupset especially designed for the event which one of us had to use during the Sportif, along with special commemorative cycle top and shorts. We had a good chat with the Pinarello staff and learned all about the history of Pinarello España. It was their 25th Anniversary and we were all presented with a beautiful 1.5lt bottle of Rioja in a lovely wooden case as a thank you for being part of the Pinarello family. We returned to the hotel at 6pm, got washed and changed ready to board the bus which took us to the El Torro Hotel in Villava, home of Miguel Indurian. The dining room was beautifully set for our 6 course evening meal with Miguel Indurian’s Pinarello Time Trials bike and his Pinarello road bike both on display – these were the bikes that he used when he won the Tour De France on 5 separate occasions, 1991, 92, 93, 94 and 95. After dinner Miguel Indurian gave an excellent presentation about his life and cycling in general (I’m glad that we had Harry to translate). At 1am we then boarded the buses to return to our hotel, it was an early rise the next morning with breakfast at 6am followed by a photo shoot with all the Pinarello dealers in Spain on Pinarello bikes in front of the hotel. Martyn was testing the new Gan. We left the hotel at 7am and cycled en mass for 30 minutes to the centre of the town in Vallava where again we had our photos taken with Miguel Indurain and Pinarello. All riders had to sign on, just like the start of every stage in the tour, before making their way to the start line where we got to start right at the front with Miguel, as we were guests of Pinarello. There were 2 separate routes this year 160km and 100km, Harry, Martyn and myself opted for the short one whilst Moth had no choice he was doing the long one like it or not. The race started promptly at 8am and the 4000 riders were soon underway. There were police outriders to the front and rear and at most junctions, the roads were completely closed for the first 50-60km after which the groups had thinned out considerably, the whole race was also televised by helicopter which followed us most of the way. There were many small accidents on route, especially now that it had started to rain and the usual amount of people at the side of the road with punctures. Passing through all the small towns and villages it was amazing to see all the inhabitants out cheering us on, this has been a major event for this area for the last 27 years. There were 2 category 3 climbs and 1 category 2 climb on our route, giving a total ascent of 1500metres with a total distance of 100kms. The temperature never rose above 20 degrees, which was great for us. After 2hr 58 Harry crossed the finish line and had secured a Gold medal for his class, I finished 12 minutes behind Harry and Martyn finished in 3hrs 29, meaning we both also got Gold medals in our class. Moth who was doing the long one had come off in the rain along with another 5 riders, however he just picked himself up checked his bike and got on with it finishing in 55th position and just missing a gold medal by 10mins but still got Silver and a big scar on his leg, the main thing is we all finished safely. The event was well sponsored with live music at the end, food for the competitors and many of the large sponsors had tents and were displaying bikes and accessories. There was secure parking for all bikes, free food and drink, and also massages for anyone willing to queue. The weather by now had settled and was dry. The prize giving unfortunately was not until 4pm and as it was only 12 noon we decided to cycle back to the hotel for a gin and tonic. We had decided to stay overnight as last year we drove home immediately after the race and were all shattered. Saturday night we got a taxi into the centre of Pamplona for supper then back to the hotel for an early night. On Sunday morning we were up early, refuelled the van after loading the bikes, and hit the road. It was raining most of the way back and it soon turned into sleet followed by heavy snow forcing the traffic almost to a stand still. After about 10km it cleared and we soon saw the temperature rise and as we approached the Costa Blanca the sun was out. This was a fantastic weekend which was exceptionally well organised from the start to the finish, it was so nice to meet Miguel Indurain again in person and also get the opportunity to cycle with him on the Saturday morning, he is a really nice guy. Pinarello did us proud with their commitment to their own road show and to the Sportif making sure everything went smoothly and was a success. Looking forward to next year’s event already. Team “Cyclogical” meet every Tuesday and Thursday nights at 5.30pm and Sunday mornings at 8am and cover between 90 and 120kms at a moderate to fast pace so, if you fancy a challenge come along and join us. Looking to improve your fitness, riding ability and speed and also have a new group of friends to train with then why not come along and give it a try or call Gary on 637 487 377.

Forthcoming Events By Keith Nicol Summer has just about come and gone and up next are Halloween and then, believe it or not, it’s Christmas. But don’t worry, you still have time to enjoy the hot weather and get out there and enjoy yourselves for another week or four. Plus, one has a much better chance of getting one’s car parked on the main streets! It’s been years in waiting, but finally the City of Salt, now offers a tour to the iconic Salt works, so you can discover much more about what makes Torrevieja one of the major producers of salt in Europe. These 50 minute excursions to the iconic local industry take place on one of the Tourist Trains and will be available until 30 September. You can board the Tourist Train on Avenida de la Libertad, with the excursions taking place every two hours on even hours from 10am to 8pm. The visit costs 6.95€ for adults and 5.95€ for pensioners and children aged between 2 and 12. Torrevieja’s floating museums are made up of three ships of different origins. On the one hand we have the S-61 Delfín Submarine and the Albatross III Customs Surveillance Patrol Boat. The S-61 was the Spanish Navy’s first ship which was converted into a floating museum, specifically for the town that gave it its combat flag in 1971. The Albatross III Patrol Boat belonged to the Customs Surveillance Service until the 23 March 2006, when it became Torrevieja’s second floating museum. And lastly, the “Pascual Flores” schooner, a reconstruction of the original ship used by the sailors of Torrevieja to sell their prized salt. The Delfin submarine is based in Torrevieja’s main harbour, close to the fairground and has received over 1,300,000 visits since it was inaugurated. From 31 August to 18 December it is open everyday except Monday, from 10am to 2pm. Entrance costs 2€ and visitors must be at least a minimum height of 1.15 metres to enter and visit the submarine. Some of the other fun experiences offered in Torrevieja, apart from the usual Sun, Sea and Sangria. If you are romantic, you can enjoy a unique sunset from different parts of the town. One of these places is the La Mata y Torrevieja Natural Park, near to the La Mata Interpretation Centre. The Vía Verde, near to La Siesta urbanisation offers another unforgettable view. And of course, the sunset from our Cala Ferris (Ferris cove) in the area of Las Calas, equipped for public use, will leave you with an everlasting image. You could start the day with a gentle bike ride. A good starting point would be the Vía Verde, around 10am is a great time. It takes about 40 minutes to reach the recreational area of the Natural Park. Now will be time for lunch under the shade of the magnificent eucalyptus trees in an area perfectly equipped for this. At around 1pm you can re-start your ride. Head towards La Mata, going under the N-332 motorway. By doing this you will connect with the coast, where you can have a well-deserved dip, weather permitting.

QF Focus Magazine You will find a wide range of activities around Torrevieja to complement your stay and what’s more, only a few minutes away in the same Bajo Segura region you can discover lots of towns with a rich historical heritage. Likewise, less than an hour away, there are beautiful cities such as Alicante, with all the tourist attractions expected of a provincial capital, or the Terra Mítica theme park, less than one hour away, with state-of-the-art rides for the whole family to enjoy. The north of the province also has some charming hidden treasures, not forgetting the inland mountainous regions of Alicante, with countless protected nature reserves, routes, rural tourism, greenways, etc. For more information please visit the Costa Blanca website, where you can plan your trips to the rest of the province, whether these are to the sea or mountains. You choose: www.costablanca.org or www.comunitatvalenciana.com. The IFA exhibition centre beside the airport has a couple of events that may be of interest in September. From 28 to 30 September, FIRAMACO + ENERGY 2018 takes place at the same time as FIRAHOGAR 2018 Furniture, Furnishing and Home Decoration Show. If you go at the weekend, KIDS & CO 2018 BY FÁTIMA CANTÓ will also be open to the public, from 29 to 30 September. In Torrevieja’s fabulous International Auditorium on 15 September, the Grupo De Cámara De La Orquesta Sinfónica De Torrevieja perform an intimate Música de Cámara. Plus a date for your diary in October, on the 20 and 21, will be Expo Torrevieja IV, but more about that next month. The Rojales Craft Market returns to mornings for the Autumn so if you are looking to while away an hour or so, looking for a small gift, piece of art or decoration, don’t miss the monthly Craft Market at the Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales. Local artists put their work on display along with other craft works to browse and enjoy. It takes place on the 1st Sunday of the month from 11am to 2pm. Another fun and unusual event for kids of all ages is the Torrellano Miniature Steam Train. It is run by the Friends of the Railways Association and so is normally only open on Saturdays between 4pm and 8pm. Every month the Friends of the Railways Association host a miniature train event at the railway museum in Torrellano. Donations of 1.50€ per visit are requested. All information is correct at the time of going to print. We advise you check for any changes which are beyond our control.
