The search is on for a photo which captures the essence of Spain

Specsavers Ópticas’ Summer Photography Competition offers prizes of a €100 Amazon voucher and a pair of designer sunglasses for the best photo.

On Monday the 3rd of July, Specsavers Ópticas launched a Summer Photography Competition to find an image which captures the essence of Spain. In doing so, they hope to shine a spotlight on all the wonderful aspects of Spain and find out what images encapsulate its very best elements. They are asking local residents on the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and Mallorca, to send in beautiful photographs to be in with a chance of winning a €100 Amazon voucher and a pair of designer sunglasses. Lisa James from Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar comments, “Spain is such a stunning and diverse country, with incredible natural beauty, a vibrant culture of arts, music and dance and of course incredible food. This summer we are asking keen photographers living close to our stores to show us, through an image, what makes Spain so special to them.

We are very excited to see these fantastic images and celebrate the talented photographers on the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and Mallorca, where our nine stores are located. The person who takes the best picture and best explains why this is the essence of Spain to them, will be rewarded with a €100 Amazon voucher and a pair of designer sunglasses worth up to 159€.”

The competition is open until the 1st of September and photographs can be submitted on social media by tagging @SpecsaversOpticas on Facebook and @specsaversspain on Instagram, sending photos via Messenger or via email to spain.marketing@specsavers.com

A jury formed of three Specsavers Ópticas store directors will judge the entries and shortlist the top five entries. These will then be posted on social media and the image with the most likes and comments will be declared the overall winner.

Competition is open to residents of the provinces of Alicante and Malaga and the island of Mallorca and you must be aged 18 and above. The competition closes on Friday 1st September 2023. Terms and conditions apply, which can be found at www.specsavers.es/sorteo

I regularly have extolled the virtues of Liberty’s fully comprehensive house policy. When asking the right questions, you will discover that many house insurance policies are inadequate. You do need to read the small print on your house policy, including checking that you have the correct policy with Liberty Seguros.

One of the very important issues when discussing house insurance is the amount of contents cover, always remembering that with Spanish Home insurance the kitchen is included in the contents, not the buildings. Also there is a wonderful extra you can add to your policy and that is accidental damage, which is unique to Liberty Seguros and covers many breakages and claims within the home. Therefore can I please ask you all to double check the coverage of your home policies, whether you are with Jennifer Cunningham Insurance and Liberty, or another company, to understand the cover you actually have. Finding out you have the incorrect and insufficient coverage when you want to make a claim is far too late.

My consultants are currently working on assessing the home policies, and if they feel you would benefit with increased, additional coverage, they will contact you at renewal. In the meantime, if you have any concerns or questions, please contact one of my offices and we will be able to give you the advice you require and answer any questions.

Just remember that your property is likely to be your most valuable asset, and needs the right protection.

We also have optional guarantees available, which include dangerous dog liability, public liability for mobility vehicles, cover for electric vehicle chargers, and illegal occupation and unpaid rent if you are a landlord renting your property. If you have expensive garden furniture, we can increase the cover for these. We can also offer increased cover for valuable objects and jewellery in event of theft with violence.

We can tailor your house policy to suit your own individual needs. If you require any further information or a quotation, please contact one of my offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.

Our cruise was filled with lots of laughter, copious amounts of delicious food and beverages. The ship itself was very large and stunning although some of the service from the staff left something to be desired.

We visited several cities, some we will definitely return to others not, but that is the beauty of cruising. We all felt like we needed another weeks holiday on our return as it was so jam packed and the time didn't seem to go anywhere.

However not to be, and a week later I was off to Madrid for a few days to experience more chaotic days with a huge music festival. The amount of people in attendance was shocking and at times felt like crowd crushing was going to happen. As it was at a new venue, the organisers will need to review the layout of the stages, bars and toilets for next year to avoid the mayhem.

This month sees more big birthdays with my mum turning 90 years old and my not so little angel turning 18 years old. It seems like only yesterday I was holding her as a baby in my arms...life passes us by far too quickly.

Three Amata fairs in August

In August the Amata artisans association has organised two weekend fairs in the province of Alicante, while its summer fair in the port of Jávea is in full swing until 3 September. At the three fairs only Artesanía de Autor® (original arts and crafts) is sold and each stall offers something different.

Hondón de las Nieves

On Friday 11 and Saturday 12 of August they are holding a craft fair in Hondón de las Nieves, with many craft demonstrations and workshops. It will be the eighth edition of this fair, that is renown for the originality of its crafts. On Friday a juggler closes the fair with a fire show and both days a magician will walk through the fair astonishing the public with his tricks and pranks and will put on a great magic show on Saturday night, just before the famous correfocs (a parade with lots of fireworks and noise which attracts people from all over the area). The fair opens both days from 7pm until midnight or later.

San Fulgencio

The following week, on 18, 19 and 20 August, they are in the La Marina urbanisation in San Fulgencio, where thousands of people live or spend their vacation. They offer workshops for children, craft demonstrations, soap bubble shows and, of course their Arts and Crafts. The fair has a nostalgic atmosphere: all the artisans dress according to the 1920s, while The Red Velvets perform songs in the style of the mythical The Andrews Sisters and The Nest Swing invites everyone to join in their swing demonstrations. The juggler with his period characters completes the programme and closes the fair at night with a fire show. Opening times are from 6pm until midnight or later.

25th birthday

At both weekend fairs Amata celebrates its 25th anniversary with a contest of unique pieces, made by the participants and invites the public to vote for the piece they like best.

Jávea Port

It is the 10th edition of the traditional summer fair on the sea side promenade in the port of Jávea and the choice changes from one week to another as some artisans have signed up for the whole summer, where as others come only a few weeks, to have time to work in their workshops and replace the pieces they have sold. The fair opens every evening at 7:30pm.

To summarise the three fairs, each with a link to its program:

Unlocking the Hidden Potential: Beyond Structural Defects

When it comes to owning property, whether it be a home, a commercial building, or a piece of land, many individuals might overlook the importance of having their property surveyed by a proper qualified architect, especially if there are no apparent structural defects. However, a property survey conducted by a qualified architect offers numerous benefits that go beyond identifying mayor structural defects. From ensuring legal compliance to maximising potential, here's why you should consider having your property surveyed.

1. Unearthing Hidden Problems: Even if your property appears to be in good condition, there may be underlying issues that an untrained eye might miss. Architect-conducted surveys can identify potential problems before they escalate into costly repairs.

2. Ensuring Compliance with Regulations: Building regulations, zoning regulations, and property laws are constantly evolving. An architect's survey will ensure that your property complies with all the relevant regulations. This is especially vital if you plan to make any renovations or expansions in the future. Failing to comply with these regulations could result in fines or legal troubles, making an architect's survey a proactive measure to avoid such issues.

3. Accurate Property Documentation: An architect's survey provides you with precise and detailed documentation of your property. This documentation can be invaluable for insurance purposes, property valuations, or legal disputes. It establishes a baseline for your property's condition and boundaries, protecting your interests as the owner.

4. Maximizing Property Potential: A property survey conducted by an architect can also offer insights into how you can best utilise your property. Whether you are considering a landscape redesign, adding an extension, or developing the land for a specific purpose, an architect's expertise can help you optimise your property's potential and increase its value.

5. Reducing Uncertainty in Real Estate Transactions: If you are buying or selling property, having an architect-conducted survey can instil confidence in both parties. Buyers will feel assured about

the property's condition, and sellers can demonstrate transparency, making the negotiation process smoother and potentially leading to faster deals. If you are purchasing a property having an onsite survey with a qualified architect (approximately 120 euros) is essential.

6. Long-term Financial Savings: While property surveys by architects may incur an initial cost, they can save you substantial amounts of money in the long run. By detecting and addressing issues early on, you can prevent more extensive damages that could be far more expensive to repair. Moreover, a well-maintained and compliant property is likely to have a higher resale value.

7. Peace of Mind: Knowing that your property has been thoroughly examined by a professional architect provides peace of mind. It gives you confidence that you are making informed decisions about your property, ensuring the safety, legality, and potential for your investment.

In conclusion, property surveys by architects offer far-reaching advantages beyond just identifying structural defects. From uncovering hidden problems to ensuring compliance with regulations, maximising potential, and providing peace of mind, an architect's survey is an essential investment for any property owner. Whether you plan to make changes to your property or simply want to be well-informed about its condition, consulting an architect for a thorough survey is a step that will pay off in numerous ways in the future. Remember, prevention is always better than cure, and having your property surveyed by an architect is a proactive measure that can save you from potential headaches and financial burdens down the road. GARDENING HINTS & TIPS from the Vega Baja Gardening Club ALOE VERA

Probably the most fantastic plant in the garden.

Last month I mentioned using Aloe Vera as a rooting compound for plant cuttings, but this amazing succulent is great for many more reasons.

It's known to have been used for over 6000 years, the ancient Egyptians called it the plant of immortality, a claim I won't be making. The best known use is for relieving sunburn, but it's also good for minor ordinary burns. Split a leaf lengthways and simply rub the sap on the burn, it works quite quickly. This is something that has plenty of scientific backing, Aloe is packed with nutrients, minerals, vitamins and amino acids.

There's another great use for the gel inside an Aloe leaf, looking after your ageing skin. The gel is a great moisturiser, and gives the skin improved elasticity, my husband says I need to use more of it. He should recover soon!

The internal uses are not something I'm going to talk about, I'm not a doctor, but it has many properties used by qualified people, you can read about those on the web if you are interested. An Aloe plant makes a great gift for a non gardening friend, and it's very easy to propagate, so next month I'll explain how to do that.

Home-made remedies for treating insect bites

The arrival of summer brings mosquitoes and other insects which seem to thrive on sunkissed skin. Preventing bites is not always easyalthough mosquito nets and repellents work well. If you do get bitten, here are a few traditional remedies using everyday ingredients to deal with the itching, stinging sensation and swelling caused by insect bites.

Douse yourself in vinegar

The antiseptic qualities in white vinegar or apple cider vinegar relieve the pain of mosquito bites. Apply a small amount directly on to the affected area.

A squeeze of lemon juice

Lemon juice can be applied directly on to the bites to help to disinfect the area. It can sting, so you can also squeeze some juice into a small glass of water to dilute it.

Soothing aloe vera

Aloe vera is fabulous for treating many skin conditions from sunburn to dried skin. It is also a balm for itchy bites and helps the affected area to heal.

Sweet honey balm

Mosquito and other insect bites can be soothed by applying honey on to the bite. The antiseptic qualities of honey also help the skin to heal and regenerate.

WHY DOES ASTRONOMY MATTER?

Recently, a friend told me that I had never talked about the most simple and basic question in astronomy, why the heck should it matter to most people? She was quite right, so I think it's time I put matters right.

If the contestants on certain television quizzes are representative of most of us, not a lot of people can name the eight planets, or know how far away the Sun or Moon are. Then there's the question that can make any astronomer scream in frustration, aren't astronomy and astrology the same thing? (Definitely not, one is science, the other is entertainment).

TARJETA DE EMBARQUEBOARDING PASS

VENTANA - WINDOW

See back pages for answers

So, I'll try my best to say why astronomy is so important and I'll begin with the biggest thing of all. Astronomy encompasses everything that is, and has been in existence. When people look up at all the stars, planets, galaxies and everything else out there, we are trying to understand what made our Earth and everything on it. 'We are all made of star stuff'' to quote the late Carl Sagan, meaning that every kind of matter that exists including you and me was made inside stars. In case you're wondering if that's fanciful nonsense, it isn't, it's fact.

The next good reason to appreciate astronomy falls much closer to home. If you said that looking at the universe doesn't affect your life you are probably right, but that would be rather limiting. It was studying the planet Venus that first alerted us to what happens when a planet has a runaway greenhouse effect. Venus has suffered this fate, it's astonishingly hot there, not just because of the sun, but because the build up of CO2 in the atmosphere is trapping the heat. If that sounds familiar, it should do because it's what is happening to Earth at the moment, it might not effect us too much now, but what about our grandchildren?

OK, that's two big reasons why astronomy matters, one big reason and one selfish reason. Now for a third one, and perhaps the main one for people like myself who just love looking at what is out there. It's absolutely stunningly beautiful. Even some of the most beautiful things we can see on Earth are based in astronomy, a glorious sunset or a rainbow happen because of the spectrum of sunlight. In the night sky, the Moon is a lovely thing, but once you've seen it through a telescope in close up with the light glinting of mountain peaks you'll never forget it. The planet Saturn is a fantastic thing to see with the rings shining away. Seeing it for yourself rather than looking at a photograph is as different as comparing a sunset photograph with the real thing. Out of all the beauty comes a thirst for understanding what we are seeing, a longing to see and know more and sometimes a sadness that so many people are missing it all. If someone chooses to spend a life ignoring all that, that's fine, it's a personal choice, but what a lot they are missing.
