AUGUST 2024 31 YEARS SERVING THE COMMUNITY SINCE 1993

Crafts and fireworks in Hondón de las Nieves

On Friday the 9th and Saturday the 10th of August, the traditional craft market will again be held in Hondón de las Nieves, which always ends with an impressive "correfocs" (literally: fire run) that attracts people from all over the whole area. More than twenty artisans are expected who will set up their stalls in the centre of the village and also give workshops. There will be a puppet theatre, an old-fashioned merry-go-round and board games. And on Saturday at midnight, a huge float passes through the streets, accompanied by beautifully dressed devilish figures that set off flares, bangers and other fireworks.

The artists and craftsmen come not only to sell their items, but also to work in their stalls, so you can see the skill and patience with which they make their things. You can ask them to explain techniques or tools and even place special orders. They all want to share their love for their craft with you. Each stall offers something different, so there is certainly something for everyone.

There are workshops for children, puppet shows and small tables with wooden games everywhere. So the children don't have to be bored when their parents settle down in the Argentinian tavern, the creperie or the Arabic tea tent to enjoy freshly roasted meat, a sweet or savoury crepe, or an original kebab.

The organisation of the market is again in the hands of the association Amata. It is not easy for the artisans to make a living from their craft, especially when they have to compete with products from a factory or imported from other countries. Therefore, participants in an Amata fair are only allowed to sell products they have made themselves (although they are not so strict with the local stalls set up in Calle San Juan). In the nine years that this market has been organised by Amata, it has got the reputation that you can buy here original handicrafts directly from the maker, at a fair price for both.

The market opens at 7pm on Friday the 9th and Saturday the 10th of August and lasts on Friday until after midnight, while on Saturday it will close when the "correfocs" starts at midnight. The full programme, photos from last year and more information can be found at www.puebloartesano.es/hondondelasnieves.

The Best of Jennifer Cunningham

Original Article from February 2023

What makes Jennifer Cunningham Insurances so different?

A good question and I can offer you a number of answers.

I started my company nearly 30 years ago, working from home and developing the business slowly over a number of years. Once established, I employed staff and rented a large office in Jávea port, where I am still to this day. How life has changed for me, and for the better.

I realised when I moved to Spain, that there was very little help available and what was available was normally in Spanish. There was no private health insurance, no funeral plans and no insurance dedicated to the Expat, and little customer service.

I started the business selling health insurance for a British company, along with funeral plans. Having lost my husband in Spain, I realised how difficult it was to arrange a funeral and the costs were enormous. Being very disciplined myself (probably due to my time in the Air Force), I have a strong work ethic. I used to work from home during the day, and I would go out early evenings making home visits until I was busy enough to take someone on to help me. From those early days when I worked tirelessly, I built my company and now have 7 offices. I demand from my excellent and loyal staff that they treat all my clients with respect, courtesy and honesty and offer them the best service that is possible.

I pride myself that the after sales service is the best, a service very rare in Spain. I have a Claims Administrator and a dedicated Renewal department, who will make sure that as your circumstances change, your policies can change with you and you fully aware of your coverage.

So these are just some of the reasons why we are so special. We are more than just a voice on the phone, offering good, old fashioned service. Not always the cheapest, but the best, working with Liberty Seguros and ASSSA healthcare, who both provide special Expat policies and are the best in the market.

Mark, Jennifer’s son, will be taking on the company to continue with Jennifer’s ethos of customer service and information and this is one of the previous articles from Jennifer that is still relevant today. The only difference is Liberty Seguros has now merged with Generali Seguros, although the policies remain the same. For more information or a quotation, please call one of my offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.

Our weekend in Madrid was a welcome break and was very civilised with a bit of shopping combined with fabulous food and some delicious cocktails....just what the doctor ordered.

On our return, our lives took a different turn and things became very sad with the passing of our beloved mother, following a few weeks in and out of hospital. The staff at

Torrevieja hospital were very comforting and attentive when the end was near and allowed us to be with her in her final moments. She is now no doubt enjoying her favourite tipple of whiskey & lemonade (something she was unable to do for many years due to health reasons) with our father and bending his ear like she always used to do.... Rest in peace Mam xxx

We didn't have any guests planned but following our sad news, my best friend from the UK arrived to be there for the family unannounced. This forced me to take some time out for myself and I actually found myself relaxing for the few days she was here, which was something I rarely do.

Now we have to move forward with our lives and remember the good times we shared... and try to learn to always make time for each other as life is far too short.

Until next time...

AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS

What have they achieved for science?

We all know what an amateur astronomer is, a lover of everything out there in the universe. However for most people the daily work of a professional astronomer is a mystery and one that I'm saving for another time. What is easy to define is who was the first British professional astronomer, other countries are quite different. After King Charles II was restored to the throne, one of the many innovations he created was the post of 'King's obversator' later to become astronomer royal, the first being a great man called John Flamstead, a fascinating and very clever chap. The King hadn't suddenly become curious about the night sky, but he was very keen to improve British trade and that needed better navigation which in turn needed better star maps, and so the story began.

In our modern world we know a great deal about the universe but it's also clear that there is a vast amount still to learn, so what can today's amateur possibly contribute? Firstly, comets, in the short time I've lived in Spain, nearly 300 comets were found by amateurs, that's nearly half the total. If you discover one, it'll be named after you, and your namesake might soar through the heavens until the end of time.

Now for a few quick but important contributions. Patrick Moore made moon maps the helped NASA with the first Moon landings. More recently an Australian amateur discovered an anomaly on Jupiter after something big hit the planet. The planet Uranus was discovered by an amateur, The comet Shoemaker Levy smashing into Jupiter was another amateur discovery, this planetary collision kicked off the whole Spacewatch program that is mapping the movements of anything that threatens our Earth - rather important that is!

I could go on and on, but that would be boring, to know more you can use the internet. What might interest you more is what you and I can contribute, and you don't even need a telescope, just a computer. European citizen science is a catch all term that includes some great astronomy projects such as searching for black holes, near Earth objects, asteroid hunting and much more. All you need to join these projects is as little or much time as you want, and a computer or smartphone. You don't need qualifications or to be super smart, just an interest.

I would recommend looking at a website called SKAO, just Google it. It lets you use the time when your computer is idle to analyse signals collected by radio telescopes. You can look for supernova, or pulsars and much more.

That's all for this month, I'll finish by mentioning that the nova we are expecting in Coronae Borealis hasn't gone off yet, and I must add that after seeing my crack about the flat Earth society last month, my son pointed out that when the society first started, they advertised that they had members all over the globe. 'Nuf said.

Embracing the Sun: The Vital Role of Pool Cleaning in Maintaining Crystal Clear Waters by Cannon Pools

As summer is here, many of us eagerly anticipate the refreshing dip in our pools, seeking respite from the scorching sun. However, the sun's powerful rays can have a profound impact on the cleanliness and overall health of our pools. It is crucial to understand the effects of the sun on pool water and the importance of regular pool cleaning to ensure a pristine and inviting oasis.

The sun's UV rays can cause a range of issues in pool water. Firstly, prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to the growth of algae which thrive in warm, sunny conditions and can quickly turn a once-clear pool into a green, murky mess. Additionally, the sun's heat accelerates the evaporation of water, leading to imbalanced chemical levels and potentially damaging the pool's equipment.

Algae not only make our pools aesthetically unappealing but also pose health risks. They can create slippery surfaces, increasing the likelihood of accidents. Moreover, certain types of algae can cause skin irritations, eye infections, and respiratory problems. Neglecting pool cleaning in the face of algae growth can result in costly repairs and potential health hazards for swimmers.

Regular pool cleaning is the key to combating the detrimental effects of the sun. Cannon Pools complete a comprehensive cleaning routine including skimming debris, brushing the pool walls and floor, vacuuming, and maintaining proper chemical balance. We will also regularly inspect and maintain the filtration and circulation systems which is crucial to ensure their optimal functioning.

Pool filters remove impurities, ensuring clear and clean water. Additionally, proper circulation prevents stagnant water, which can promote algae growth.

In the battle against the sun's effects on our pools, regular cleaning and maintenance emerge as the champions. By embracing proper pool cleaning practices, we can enjoy the benefits of crystal clear water, ensuring a safe and inviting environment for ourselves and our loved ones. Let us remember that a well-maintained pool not only enhances our leisure time but also contributes to our overall well-being. So, let's dive into the summer season with a commitment to pool cleaning and embrace the sun's warmth and radiance without compromising the beauty and health of our pools.

If you would like us to come and inspect your pool with a view to having regular cleaning and maintenance, or if you are in need of any repair work, then call Cannon Pools on 693 024 555.

How to beat a heatwave

The most obvious things to do in the height of summer are to drink plenty of water, use plenty of sunscreen, keep out of the mid-afternoon sun and wear light-coloured clothes.

As well as water, other ways to keep hydrated are to eat foods with a high water content, such as most fruits, salads and cold soups such as gazpacho and salmorejo. These have the added advantage of being good for your health too.

Watermelon is 90% water and is a great fruit to add to your summer shopping list. You can slice it and keep it in the fridge so it's cool and refreshing, or blend it with water and freeze it to make a granita. To keep your home cool, as well as using air conditioning, it's best to close the windows during the hottest hours of the day, close the blinds or curtains, and then open the windows during the cooler times of day.

When you venture outside, walk on the shady side of the street, take water with you to keep hydrated, and don’t forget the sunscreen. You can buy a handheld fan, either with disposable batteries or rechargeable ones, to take out and about with you. Keep an eye on pets too to make sure they are staying hydrated and keep out of the sun. Take the dogs for a walk early in the morning or late evening. Remember, if it’s too hot for you to keep your hands or bare feet on the ground for five seconds, it's also too hot for your dog to walk on. You can get cooling pads for pets, if there isn’t a shady spot in the house that they like. These pads are also handy for humans to sit on or put their feet on to cool down.

We are excited, and proud, to uniquely bring Estate Sales to Spain.

We have already been asked to sell estates on behalf of our Funeral Planning clients who wanted us to handle everything on their behalf, keeping all their later life services under one roof. Those estates include property, cars, and complete home contents.

Now we have expanded and bring you a whole new business, under our White Doves’ brand – White Doves Estate Sales.

But you may ask – what exactly are Estate Sales?

An Estate Sale is an organised method of selling the contents of your home usually following the death of someone, although now they have become popular when people are downsizing, going into care, divorce, or moving to another location or country and don’t want to take all their belongings. Or someone may have purchased a house, and all the contents were included in the sale and they don’t want them.

In short, Estate Sale means the sale of someone’s estate. An estate sale happens when someone needs assets to be sold or otherwise liquidated. It is not a “garage” sale – it is an organised sale, conducted by a professional business who will create an inventory and agree terms and conditions with the seller. Normally sales will be held over a couple of days and are advertised and open to the general public. Items may also be available for sale online.

Sold or selling your home or business?

We can liquidate the entire contents including: Property, cars, personal possessions, furniture, home contents, jewellery. If you are a seller wanting to arrange an Estate Sale or a potential buyer interested in scooping up a bargain, email us your contact details to pre-register at info@whitedoves.es.

AP7 road is toll free for the summer

One of the most expensive tolls in Spain will disappear for the busy summer months to help ease traffic congestion around Alicante city. The AP7 Alicante ring road between Monforte del Cid and El Campello is toll free until October 15 in a bid to encourage drivers to use this road instead of the A70.

An average of between 80,000 and 95,000 vehicles a day use the A70 while only around 5,000 motorists use this paid-for stretch of the AP7.

A series of improvements to the A70 could also be in the pipeline, including expanding its capacity and upgrading links of the A70 with the A31 (Las Atalayas) and the A77a, which is the access road to the university of Alicante.

However, the news has not gone down so well further down the coast in Orihuela and Murcia, whose councils have been campaigning for years for their stretch of the AP7, particularly the section between Los Montesinos and Villamartín-La Zenia, to be free of charge. For instance, Zenia Boulevard shopping centre attracts around 15 million visitors a year and many avoid the seven-kilometre stretch of the AP7, which has tolls, and use the alreadycongested N332 instead.

Fanning the soaring temperatures

As the Summer heat intensifies on the Costa Blanca, the numbers of women using traditional fans increases. Old women, young women even children and the occasional man can be seen, making the most of this time-honoured aid to keeping cool.

While Spain enjoys strong links with the fan, historians generally agree that they originated in Asia, likely in China at around 2000 BC. They were also found in India, where the earliest examples were made of palm leaves, and in Persia, where impressive ostrich feather fans were prominent.

The Portuguese dominated early trade with Asia, and as a result, the folding fan arrived in Europe during the 15th century. Japan is credited with the invention of the “sensu” folding fan, which is made up of two primary parts, the stick – composed of a varying number of ‘blades’ and the mount, a mechanism inspired by bat wings.

By the 16th century, the fan had gained popularity in courts across Europe, including Spain, Italy, England and France.

In England, fans were an adornment of female dress during Henry VIII’s reign, and Queen Elizabeth I frequently styled herself with a fan.

The folding fan is known in Spanish as “abanico.” As the accessory gained popularity in Europe, ‘abanico’ craftsmanship emerged, reaching its pinnacle during the 17th century, when renowned painters were hired to decorate fans for the nobility.

The famous 17th-century painting by Diego Velazquez, La dama del abanico, demonstrates the emerging centrality of the fan in Spanish culture. In 1797, the Real Fábrica de Abanicos (Royal Fan Factory) was established and produced a wide variety of fans, extending their usage to all social classes, ages, and genders, and to occasions ranging from parties to mourning to daily life. Other factories, such as the famous Casa de Dieg, which opened in 1823 in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol is still in operation today.

As Spanish manufacturers of fans began to take hold, so did the country’s tourism industry. After Napoleon’s attempts to capture Spain failed, the country became a popular destination for countless rugged adventurers.

During this boom, Spanish culture became an exportable commodity. Washington Irving’s Tales of the Alhambra, published in 1832, was widely circulated in Europe and beyond. A romanticised version of the country appeared in the popular opera Carmen, which portrays a love triangle anchored by a Spanish gypsy in the title role. This also led to the popularity of Flamenco dances, where the use of fans plays a major part. The dancers use a slightly larger fan, called “pericon” to give a greater sensual and spellbinding effect to the dance.

Despite its historic importance, the real reason behind the popularity of the hand-held fan then, and now, is that in the heat, its use actually helps to increase airflow and the evaporation of sweat on the skin. For this reason alone it is certain will we see its continued use in Spain.

Ladies throughout the 19th and 20th centuries used fans to communicate in secret: to declare love, for example, as females were not permitted to speak their minds until well into the 1970s.

Here are some of the more well-known gestures:

• To fan quickly: intense romantic interest

• To fan slowly: already married, or uninterested quickly meant the woman was either engaged or has a love interest

• To close slowly: this would mean a “yes”

• To close quickly: a clear “no”

The language of the beautiful and traditional Spanish fan is just one of many secret languages invented over time to communicate efficiently without being vocal or overt.

While in some countries the fan may be seen as an antiquated artefact, it is still a major part of the Spanish culture – both for practical reasons and as a subtle method of communication and is likely to remain so for some time to come.

Unlocking the Hidden Potential: Beyond Structural Defects

When it comes to owning property, whether it be a home, a commercial building, or a piece of land, many individuals might overlook the importance of having their property surveyed by a proper qualified architect, especially if there are no apparent structural defects.

However, a property survey conducted by a qualified architect offers numerous benefits that go beyond identifying major structural defects. From ensuring legal compliance to maximising potential, here's why you should consider having your property surveyed by an architect.

1. Unearthing Hidden Problems: Even if your property appears to be in good condition, there may be underlying issues that an untrained eye might miss. Architect-conducted surveys can identify potential problems before they escalate into costly repairs.

2. Ensuring Compliance with Regulations: Building codes, zoning regulations, and property laws are constantly evolving. An architect's survey will ensure that your property complies with all the relevant regulations. This is especially vital if you plan to make any renovations or expansions in the future. Failing to comply with these regulations could result in fines or legal troubles, making an architect's survey a proactive measure to avoid such issues.

3. Accurate Property Documentation: An architect's survey provides you with precise and detailed documentation of your property. This documentation can be invaluable for insurance purposes, property valuations, or legal disputes. It establishes a baseline for your property's condition and boundaries, protecting your interests as a property owner.

4. Maximising Property Potential:

A property survey conducted by an architect can also offer insights into how you can best utilise your property. Whether you are considering a landscape redesign, adding an extension, or developing the land for a specific purpose, an architect's expertise can help you optimise your property's potential and increase its value.

5. Reducing Uncertainty in Real Estate Transactions: If you are buying or selling property, having an architect-conducted survey can instil confidence in both parties. Buyers will feel assured about the property's condition, and sellers can demonstrate transparency, making the negotiation process smoother and potentially leading to faster deals. If you are purchasing a property having an onsite survey with a qualified architect is essential.

6. Long-term Financial Savings: While property surveys by architects may incur an initial cost, they can save you substantial amounts of money in the long run. By detecting and addressing issues early on, you can prevent more extensive damages that could be far more expensive to repair. Moreover, a wellmaintained and compliant property is likely to have a higher resale value.

7. Peace of Mind: Knowing that your property has been thoroughly examined by a professional architect provides peace of mind. It gives you confidence that you are making informed decisions about your property, ensuring the safety, legality, and potential for your investment.

In conclusion, property surveys by architects offer far-reaching advantages beyond just identifying structural defects. From uncovering hidden problems to ensuring compliance with regulations, maximising potential, and providing peace of mind, an architect's survey is an essential investment for any property owner. Whether you plan to make changes to your property or simply want to be well-informed about its condition, consulting an architect for a thorough survey is a step that will pay off in numerous ways in the future. Remember, prevention is always better than cure, and having your property surveyed by an architect is a proactive measure that can save you from potential headaches and financial burdens down the road.

Crescendo International Choir Ends Season with Concert in Altea

On Sunday June 16, the choir performed for the first time at Palau de Altea, a performing arts theatre in the lovely seaside town of Altea. In addition, a local choir, La Coral de la Societat Filharmónica Alteanense, performed five lovely pieces of music in Spanish at the same event. Afterwords, both choirs sang an unusual piece of Austrian music together called Zottelmarsch (Vagabond’s March) by Gottfried Veit. The theme of all the Crescendo Choir concerts was movies and musicals. Some songs featured include Sound of Music medley, Memory from the musical Cats, Unchained Melody from the movie Ghost, You’ve Got a Friend in Me from the film Toy Story, and a medley of songs from the popular musical and film Les Misérables.

Earlier in June, Crescendo Choir performed at the Salt Church in Los Montesinos, raising 163€ for the needs of this church. In May, Crescendo International Choir performed a concert at La Siesta Evangelical Church in Torrevieja, raising 433€ for La Siesta church’s charities. These include financial assistance for a Mozambique orphanage and Friends of Pahar Schools, which helps pay for scholarships for girls to attend classes in rural Indian schools.

The choir is also gearing up for its 20th anniversary concert on October 26 at the Salt Church in Los Montesinos, so mark your calendars now!

Choir rehearsals will resume at Rincon de Miguel in Los Montesinos the first week of September. For more details about the choir, see crescendo-choir.com. You can also follow the group on Facebook at Crescendo Choir. If you have questions, email info@crescendo-choir.com.

The choir would be delighted to welcome new singers. Our current choir includes people from England, Scotland, Wales, the US, the Netherlands, Germany, and Scandinavia, among other nationalities. Our Music Director, Irene Oliva, and pianist, Antonio Guillen, are accomplished Spanish musicians.

THY WILL BE DONE

Paul Blackmoore (Practice Principal) with little helper Benny, his rescue French Bulldog

In Spain when you buy a property with your partner, it is usual that you will both be registered on the Escritura (Land Registry) as owning 50% each. If the first party dies and leaves their 50% to the surviving partner, the survivor will then own 100% of the property.

This sounds perfectly reasonable, however, should the survivor then remarry or go into care, the whole property would be at risk of being lost as an inheritance to the children/beneficiaries.

IF YOUR PARTNER REMARRIES OR GOES INTO CARE AFTER YOU DIE – PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN’S INHERITANCE

There is a way though that the first to die can guarantee that their share of the property will go to the beneficiaries that they state within their Will while at the same time protecting the survivor and enabling them to live within the property until such time as they either die, remarry, go into care or otherwise move out of the property (for example they move into a new partner’s home) without any risk of being forced out of the property or the property being sold from under them beforehand. It is called an ‘’usufructo’’ clause.

If a new Will is written, giving the survivor an usufructo right to live within the half of the property belonging to the first to die, then the survivor is free to carry on living within the property until such time as they themselves die or move out, but will not actually “own’’ the deceased’s share. This means if the survivor then subsequently remarries or goes into care for example, only

their own half could be at risk of being lost because, after the first party dies, during the ensuing probate process, the beneficiaries stated within their Will are registered on the Escritura as being the legal owners of the deceased’s share of the property.

This also reduces the size of the survivor’s estate so that when they die, because only 50% of the property will be in their own name, probate fees will be significantly reduced.

To find out more about this option and what you need to consider, just give Thy Will Be Done a call on 865 756 058, Monday to Friday 9-5 or complete their contact form at www.thywill.es and they will call at a convenient time for you.

Dean Richardson started his entertainment journey after leaving university and applying to be on the prime-time TV series ‘Star For A Night’ hosted by Jane McDonald and being selected from thousands of applicants to be one of five chosen to appear on the live shows.

Dean caught the attention of Trevor Chance - a tribute impresario – and was invited to headline his show 'Legends' on the Central Pier as Freddie Mercury. Dean’s career has taken him far and wide and he says his biggest moment was probably performing at Maspalomas Pride in Gran Canaria in front of 30,000 which he says was “spectacular” but he mostly feels privileged to be able perform his hero’s music.

Dean tells a lovely story of being at Legends in Blackpool: “We had an opening night party after my very first show in the green room and a few other local acts that we know came to join. One of them came up to me said how great I was but I have to ask you, how do you sing with those teeth in? I replied 'they're my teeth!' This guy has known me for over ten years! I get this a lot; they really are my teeth”.

The rest of Dean’s Backstage Interview can be read online at www.Costa Blanca.Events where he does talk about doing an accidental roly poly off the stage! Dean is coy about the famous people he has performed with but it’s clearly been a successful career.

Dean is performing at the Autumn Gold Fiesta along with nine other brilliant acts at Alannia Guardamar on October 15th & 16th. Early bird tickets are available if booked before end of August and Alannia have a package deal for accommodation and pitches including tickets for both days.

Putting photography skills to the test this summer

Young photographers needed to capture the best sights of the school summer holidays as part of the Specsavers Ópticas’ Summer Photography Competition

Specsavers Ópticas are looking for budding photographers aged between 6 and 17 years old, to capture the best image of their summer holidays this year. They want youngsters to grab their cameras and take an image which really encapsulates the fun of the holidays and enter it into their Summer Photography Competition.

The best photo in the Junior and Senior categories will win a €50 Amazon voucher and a pair of sunglasses and have their image showcased on social media and in the press. Images can be entered via social media and via email between the 1st of July and the 1st of September.

Chantelle Hayward from Specsavers Ópticas Calpe explains, “We want to encourage youngsters to get out and about and hone their photography skills this summer. Studies show that getting outside when we’re young and enjoying time in the sunshine can protect against myopia, as well as being good for physical and mental health, so we want to encourage less screen time and more summer fun in the sun. Our Summer Photography Competition will reward the best photographs of these summer adventures and activities and give two youngsters in our Junior and Senior categories the chance to win a €50 Amazon voucher and a pair of sunglasses.”

The competition is open between the 1st of July and the 1st of September and photographs can be submitted on social media by tagging @SpecsaversOpticas on Facebook and @specsaversspain on Instagram, sending photos via Messenger or via email to spain.marketing@specsavers.com

A jury of three will judge the entries and shortlist the top five Junior and Senior entries. The shortlisted entries will then be posted on social media and the image with the most likes and comments in each age category will be declared the winners.

One of the judges is Carrie Frais, Director of the website Mum Abroad, a platform providing up-to-date information for Englishspeaking parents living in Spain, Italy, France, and Germany. She’s delighted to be involved in the competition as she feels like it's a great way to engage kids during the long summer holidays. She explains; "Encouraging kids to take photos during the summer holidays not only sparks their creativity but also helps them capture and cherish memories. Photography allows them to see the world from different perspectives, develop storytelling skills, and build a visual journal of their adventures, creating lasting keepsakes of their childhood."

The competition is open to residents of the provinces of Alicante and Malaga and the island of Mallorca, and you must be aged between 6 and 17. The competition closes on Sunday 1st September 2024. Terms and conditions apply, which can be found at www.specsavers.es/sorteo
