Ask the Optician – I can see perfectly well, why should I have an eye test?

www.femalefocusonline.com

Francisco Jurado, Optometrist and store director of Specsavers Ópticas in Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia How often should I have an eye test? Many problems with the eyes have no symptoms, so you should have a check up with your optometrist every two years. More frequent checks are advised for the over 65s, or those with a family history of glaucoma or a condition such as diabetes, because they are more at risk of certain eye diseases. Why is important to have one, even though my eyes feel fine? There is a great deal of research done into eye diseases, with advances being made in treatments e.g. in macular degeneration. However, effective treatment relies on an early diagnosis, so it’s vital to have a regular eye test even if everything seems OK. What is an eye test? An eye test is a series of processes to check different aspects of your vision and should also include checks for common ocular diseases. How does an optician check your vision? The optometrist uses a hand-held instrument called a retinoscope, which bounces a light beam off the back of your eye. Different lenses focus the reflected light beam until steady, giving a close guide to the prescription you need. The optometrist fine-tunes his/her findings by asking you to read a test chart through different strength lenses. The optometrist flips different lenses in front of your eyes that change how clearly you can see, until you have the clearest, sharpest image possible. The results of this procedure determine the strength of lens needed. Red and green circles: red focuses behind the retina and green on the front of it, so depending on your answers, the optometrist can tell if you need a stronger or weaker lens. You are also asked to say whether flashing lines are in line horizontally and vertically. This indicates whether your eyes are co-ordinated. The optometrist may also test your ability to focus at varying distances, to decide if you need different prescriptions for distance and reading, and will also conduct a series of tests to make sure the eyes are healthy. If necessary, the optician can refer you directly for further medical examination to your hospital or general practitioner. There are six Specsavers Ópticas on the Costa Blanca. Find your nearest store and request an eye test at www.specsavers.es

What makes Jennifer Insurances so different?

Cunningham

A good question and I can offer you a number of answers. I started my company nearly 30 years ago, working from home and developing the business slowly over a number of years. Once established, I employed staff and rented a large office in Jávea port, where I am still to this day. How life has changed for me, and for the better. I realised when I moved to Spain, that there was very little help available and what was available was normally in Spanish. There was no private health insurance, no funeral plans and no insurance dedicated to the Expat, and little customer service. I started the business selling health insurance for a British company, along with funeral plans. Having lost my husband in Spain, I realised how difficult it was to arrange a funeral and the costs were enormous. Being very disciplined myself (probably due to my time in the Air Force), I have a strong work ethic. I used to work from home during the day, and I would go out early evenings making home visits until I was busy enough to take someone on to help me. From those early days when I worked tirelessly, I built my company and now have 7 offices. I demand from my excellent and loyal staff that they treat all my clients with respect, courtesy and honesty and offer them the best service that is possible. I pride myself that the after sales service is the best, a service very rare in Spain. I have two Claims Administrators and a dedicated Renewal department, who will make sure that as your circumstances change, your policies can change with you and you are fully aware of your coverage. So these are just some of the reasons why we are so special. We are more than just a voice on the phone, offering good, old fashioned service. Not always the cheapest, but the best, working with Liberty Seguros and ASSSA healthcare, who both provide special Expat policies and are the best in the market. www.femalefocusonline.com We had an emotional family send off in January as my nephew is embarking on a new life and new career in New York. He was given the opportunity of a lifetime that took a lot of consideration but in the end he made the decision to extend his wings and fly the nest. I am sure he has made the right choice and will never look back with regret, and this has opened the door to family members looking to go the USA to visit him. As part of our angel's 18th birthday present we gave her a gift voucher for a family outing to an escape room. As yet, this hasn't occurred because trying to pin everyone down as to when they are available is proving a bit difficult, however we are planning to do this sometime in February. As this is all about working together as a team to solve puzzles, this could go either way, arguing or cementing relationships....I will keep you informed!! My mission to get things done this year has certainly got off to a good start and long may it continue. It has only taken over a year but my bathroom is finally finished and other small projects around the house are currently being undertaken. I do still have some unpacked boxes from moving house over 2 years ago, but this is something I have planned to do while my other half is swinging his bats on the golf course. WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING ON 29TH FEBRUARY? THE MOVERS AND SHAKERS LAUNCH THEIR “AN EXTRA DAY, EXTRA CARE, APPEAL”

Page 5

What will you be doing on 29th February, this year? Working? Shopping? Baking? Caring? Fund Raising? The Association of Movers and Shakers are launching their “An Extra Day, Extra Care, Appeal”. How about organising a fundraising event such as afternoon tea, raffle or some other activity to raise 120€ for a worthwhile cause. In some local bars we have raffles available – for 1 Euro a ticket – you can win 20€ to spend on your extra Leap Year Day. Just choose a number and add your telephone number in the box. (The winner will be drawn on 29th February). 120€ is enough to pay for a night’s respite care, or time during the day, for a carer’s loved one to be looked after, giving the carer some well deserved respite time. All monies raised will be used on 29th February, to provide care for sufferers of: Huntington’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Ataxia, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease, the five illnesses that Movers and Shakers support. For further details on all the work that The Movers and Shakers do, visit our website on www.amscb.org.es or contact Marion Smith on +(34) 711 008250.

Comprehensive Guide to Retrospective Licences for beginners: A Crucial Read for Unlicensed Building Work

www.femalefocusonline.com

article supplied by Martinez de la Casa Architects

Consequences of Unlicensed Building Work and Fines: Unlicensed building work faces fines and potential demolition orders if detected by Spanish authorities. Fines, varying based on factors like town halls and project size, can exceed 300€ per square metre. For instance, a 10 square metre shed might incur a 3,000€ fine. Unlicensed work could also lead to legal proceedings and negatively impact property value if discovered during marketing. Obligatory Building Licences and Available Retrospective Options: Currently, all building work in Spain requires a licence, whether minor tasks like rendering or major projects such as extensions and pools. Retrospective Licences are applicable to significant work like house extensions, garages, carports, glazed areas, underbuilds, pools, workshops, and storage areas. Property owners with unauthorised work can still obtain Retrospective Licences after Brexit, provided certain conditions are met. Conditions for Obtaining a Retrospective Licence: Requirements for a Retrospective Licence differ by region. For instance, in Murcia, the completed building work must be at least 4 years old. In Almeria, the work needs to be over 6 years old, and in Alicante, it must have been completed before August 2010. Extensions that have received fines are ineligible for Retrospective Licences. Retrospective Licences After Brexit: Possibility and Potential Changes. While law changes can impact conditions for obtaining a Retrospective Licence, they are currently available after Brexit.

Martinez de la Casa Architects will inform the public if any future law changes affect the availability of these licences. Once issued, a Retrospective Licence shields against future legal objections, regardless of law changes. Obtaining a Retrospective Licence: Cost and Procedure. The process of obtaining a Retrospective Licence is straightforward and can only be managed by Spanish architects. Martinez de la Casa Architects will schedule an appointment to survey the pool or extension, requiring your NIE and current Title Deeds. The Retrospective Licence/Certificate of Antiquity is stamped by the Official College of Architects or notarised and delivered within 10 working days. Cost-wise, a Pool Retrospective Licence (Certificate of Antiquity) is 220€+IVA (266,20€ IVA incl), and Extensions cost 290€+IVA (350,90€ IVA incl, covering all extensions on the property). Martinez de la Casa Architects: Your Partner for Architectural Certification. Martinez de la Casa Architects excels in Architectural Certification in Southern Spain, offering Energy Performance Certificates (121€ inc IVA) and Habitation/Occupation Licences (prices vary by Town Hall), alongside Retrospective Licences. BRILLIANT WOMEN IN ASTRONOMY

www.femalefocusonline.com

Astronomy is an unusual science, for centuries it has appealed to, and been advanced by women as well as men, often despite the peculiar social attitudes prevalent in much of history. This is a great, great blessing because it effectively doubles the amount of talent available. A few years ago I wrote about how many prominent women there have been in the history of astronomy, from Hypatia in ancient Alexandria to Jocelyn Bell and her discovery of pulsars in the 1960s. Incidentally, a pulsar emits a rapid beeping radio signal which for a short time made people wonder if it was from aliens, so it got nicknamed LGM 1, short for little green men. It’s time I brought all this up to date. Astronomy is still attracting a lot of very clever women, from our little group, which is nearly an equal mix of the sexes, to all the different specialist branches of astronomy, and to astronauts. Katherine Johnson is a name you might know, she was featured in the film Hidden Figures, about the early days of NASA, and she was a human computer, who did the calculations to launch the first spacecraft and have a safe re-entry. Do you remember the name Helen Sharman? She was Britain’s first person into space. Carolyn Porco is sometimes called the rock star of space science, she has worked since the 1980s interpreting the results from spacecraft visiting the outer planets. When you see an amazing picture of Pluto taken from space, that’s probably her work. When asked where she spent most of her time working she once replied ‘amongst the rings of Saturn’. Almost everyone has heard of dark matter, probably the biggest puzzle in modern cosmology, the ‘most of the universe is missing’ puzzle. Did you know it was a lady who first discovered it? Vera Rubin is her name, and she penned the galaxy rotation problem. She was also the first women to have a large observatory named after her, the Rubin observatory in Chile. There’s also a group of women hardly anyone has heard of, the Mercury 13. They were a group of accomplished women pilots who were given the same tests as the men to be astronauts, it was only a presidential decision in 1960 that dashed their hopes. I could go on and on with a seemingly endless list of past and current people, there are so many in planetary science, solar physics cosmology etc. Compare astronomy with the medical profession, women make great doctors, but it was nearly impossible for them until modern times, and not long ago some people hated the idea of female aircraft pilots. I wonder what they would think of the many female astronauts. If you like a bit of hard science, this bit would have upset some blokes in the past. Women’s physiology is better suited to space travel than men’s. It’s all to do with hydration levels and oxygen consumption against energy expenditure. This has been known for a long time, but the engineering challenges in making decent personal plumbing equipment for zero gravity were very hard. Maybe in the future I’ll write about the evolution of the space toilet! I’ll finish this month with a stunning picture of astronaut Stacy Caldwell Dyson in the cupola of the International space station. She’s got the best view in the world, and off it. ● To find out more about observing and astronomy why not join our group, email us Vega Baja Astronomy Group. at vegabaja.astronomygroup@gmail.com to find out more.

An Alicante wine is among the best in the world

A wine from Bodegas Volver, in Pinoso, near Alicante, has been voted one of the top 10 wines in the world, according to the prestigious Wine Spectator magazine. To compile the 10 best wines, the editors of Wine Spectator tasted thousands of wines from around the world. Often the list is made up of French, Italian and American wines. However, this year an Alicante wine - Tarima Hill red wine priced at around €12 - has made the prestigious top 10. Bodegas Volver was founded by Rafael Cañizares in 2004, whose family has a long history of cultivating wines. Tarima Hill is made with 100% Monastrell grapes and aged in fine French oak barrels. This is not the first time the quality of the Alicante wine has been recognised by Wine Spectator. Tarima Hill 2015 was placed at 17th in its top 100 wines of the year for its elegance and intensity. Alicante-Elche airport enjoyed the best year in its history with 15.7 million passengers flying in and out last year. This is an increase of 19.2% compared to 2022. The previous record was set in 2019, the year before the pandemic, when it had 15 million passengers. Across Spain, 283.2 million airport passengers were registered throughout 2023. The figures place Alicante airport as the fifth busiest in Spain behind Madrid (60.2 million); Barcelona (49.9 million); Palma de Mallorca (31.1 million); and Malaga (22.3 million). Of the total number of travellers who used the Alicante terminal in 2023, 15,727,404 were commercial passengers, of which 13,521,335 travelled on international flights, which represents an increase of 20.4% compared to 2022. The number of passengers travelling on domestic flights was 2,206,069, an increase of 12.8%. Breaking down international traffic by nationality, the United Kingdom came out on top in 2023 with 5,439,533 passengers; followed by the Netherlands, with 1,070,976; Germany, with 895,707; Belgium, with 876,010; and Norway, with 771,762. In terms of operations, the Alicante-Elche airport handled 100,547 flights in 2023, which was an increase of 11.6% compared to the previous year. As for Valencia airport, it also had the best year in its history with 9,948,141 passengers in 2023, breaking its previous record of 8,539,579 passengers in 2019. Most international passengers using Valencia airport were travelling to or from Italy with 1,486,330 travellers; followed by France, with 864,207; Germany, with 850,080; United Kingdom, with 845,922; Netherlands, with 705,589; and Portugal, with 341,799.

A tale of two sunny cities

Alicante and Valencia are among the sunniest cities in Europe, according to a study by World Weather Online which reveals the 30 locations on the continent with the most hours of daylight per month. Alicante tops the list with 349 hours of sunshine on average per month in the capital of the province. World Weather Online carried out the study to find the average hours of sunshine per month in the 300 most populated cities of Europe. Of the top ten European cities alone, there are six Spanish, three Italian and one French. Alicante is first followed by Catania, Murcia, Malaga, Messina, Valencia, Nice, Las Palmas, Granada and Palermo. Although other cities have a higher average temperature per month, these are the ones with more hours of sunshine. In Spain, Seville has the highest average temperature per month: 21º degrees. The Andalusian city is followed by Catania, Murcia, Málaga, Las Palmas and Atenas with 20º degrees, and Alicante with 19º on average.

LAGO JARDÍN CHURCH RE-OPENS FOR SUNDAY MASS

QFocus Magazine February 2024

The church on the Urbanización at Lago Jardin, Torrevieja re-opened for Sunday Mass on Sunday 14th January with Father Richard A. Seabrook SSC celebrating the Eucharist for the first time on a Sunday morning there. The church, which had been closed for four years, re-opened in December to celebrate its centenary. “We've had a few services during the week up until now and we had a Vigil Mass at Christmas,” said Father Seabrook, “but it's really great we have been able to expand our ministry there on a Sunday morning. It was lovely to see our beautiful small church full!” “Along with my other church at Calle Granados in La Siesta, Torrevieja where we alternate between Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings for our Masses in English, we can now offer Mass in English twice a month at Lago Jardín,” he went on to say. “La Siesta Church has been the backbone of our church life since the Pandemic and I've been so grateful that we have been able to continue our worship there Our presence there is as strong as ever but adding Lago Jardín Church means we can reach out to the people in the Lago Jardín and Los Balcones area especially as the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción at Los Balcones is still closed and we used to have Mass there on a Sunday too.” “We advertise all our services on Facebook, our website and our new Instagram account which we are trying to build up as a way of communicating on social media. You can find us on Instagram @sspandptorrevieja,” he continued. Lago Jardín Church will offer Masses in English on the second, fourth, and fifth Sundays of the month at 11.30am. Father Richard A. Aries: With Jupiter in your life area this is not a time for compromise. Dig your heels in if you have to but make it quite clear that you are not to be messed with. Now is a time to be bold and to look after yourself as a priority! Taurus: With the Sun in Aquarius for the first three weeks this is a great time to negotiate. Nothing is written in stone, but remember that you kept your word whilst others seem to be content with you doing all the work now. Gemini: With Saturn in the tenth house of Pisces, resonating with Pluto, dreams can become a reality. Have more faith in yourself and seal the deal; so long as you carefully examine the small print. This is a proactive phase! Cancer: Time to rekindle a romance. Pluto in the eighth house of transformation, and Jupiter in the eleventh, bode you to give love a second chance. You are strong and independent but you need that tender love and care. Leo: Speed up. Recent events have seen you becoming complacent. Have your say rather than hold your tongue. Pluto in the seventh house sees things for how they really are, and not as they seem. Look after number one. Virgo: With five planets in Aquarius in your sixth house your curiosity and intuition are at an all time high. Check out what exactly lies behind a recent request and take negativity with the pinch of salt it deserves! Tell it how it is!

OROSCOPE

Libra: Finances are under the microscope. The fifth house line up focuses on money, gambling and investment. Make your money work for you. The fifth house is about creating and activating; budget and tighten your belt. Scorpio: This month it’s all about family and hearth and home. Aquarius hosts five planets and there is a phenomenal intensity and focus. Prepare for a shake up, but know that there’s no going back. Just remember all that glitters is not gold. Sagittarius: The five planet line up is on course for your third house this month. The house of communication heralds a short trip, and prospects of buying or selling. The Sun together with Mercury aids marketing and promotion all ways! Capricorn: The Sun in Aquarius activates and allows a project to prosper. The emphasis is on the second house of personal possessions which juggles money and expenditure. Use your skills and talents to balance the books. Aquarius: A major emphasis occurs this month in all things Aquarius. Pluto installs a rebirth and dictates empowerment for good reason. It’s the turning point, a new direction and with a strong humanitarian energy to fully focus on. Pisces: Such a busy month for you! The twelfth house hosts five planets, all in Aquarius.
