HUMILITY - THE GREATEST LESSON OF ASTRONOMY

www.femalefocusonline.com

I thought the new year was a good time to mention, yet again just how big space is and how miniscule we are. The best speaker I've ever heard on matters cosmological was a wonderful man called Carl Sagan a superb thinker, scientist and communicator who died too young nearly thirty years ago. I'm never ashamed to pinch his words in trying to explain the universe. So, what is our place in the universe, not so long ago in history, it was 'known' that Earth was the centre of everything and all else that existed circles around us, everything existed for the sole use of mankind. In 1752 Voltaire talked of two imaginary inhuman visitors falling over laughing that anyone should think this. Historically people believed that the Earth was the centre of everything, then, after Galileo's telescope showed that this was wrong they decided that our Sun was the centre, then later that the solar system was the centre, and in the 1930s some even postulated that our galaxy was the only one. Our sun is but one star amongst 1000,000.000 in the milky way galaxy, and there are at least 100,000,000,000 galaxies, probably many more if we can ever count them. To see what is called a deep sky photograph where every tiny point of light is a galaxy teeming with stars stretches our imaginations to breaking point. How wrong pride can be, Earth’s true place in the cosmos doesn't reflect the belief that humans have always had in our own importance within a vast universe. Humans have no special place in the vastness, perhaps no one has. The universe has no reason to notice our miniscule existence amongst its vastness, yet possibly humans alone can notice the beauty of creation. Are we totally meaningless in the face of all this? I think not because humans are only at the beginning of understanding ourselves and creation, our belief that we know a lot is almost certainly misplaced and in time, hopefully we will understand so much more. Whether we are alone or not does not change our responsibility to our world, perhaps some more humility of our true place in existence would make us look after ourselves a bit better. Would the universe be beautiful if there was no one to admire it? For those that have never seen it I would urge you to Google Carl Sagans Pale Blue Dot. It’s a short video showing a picture of the Earth taken from a vast distance away by a Voyager spacecraft. Carl expressed in his unique way just how tiny we are and how futile human strife is in the face of the universe. This month’s picture is of the pillars of creation a very small part of the Eagle nebula. New stars are being created here from the clouds of dust pulled together by gravity, a stunningly beautiful sight to see. ● To find out more about observing and astronomy why not join our group, email us at vegabaja.astronomygroup@gmail.com to find out more.

We are already into January and the celebrations for the Christmas period are now a distant memory. Santa has been and gone, we have welcomed in 2025 and the Three Kings are on their way. Once again I overindulged in all the things that I probably shouldn't have. So now starts the resolutions, although what they are I have no idea as yet.... I am sure some inspiration will appear in the not so distant future. We have a lot to look forward to you this year with the upcoming weddings of my nephew and then our son later on the year, and obviously the hen/ stag parties. I think we have something happening every month throughout 2025 with some big birthdays approaching too, so it will no doubt be yet another year that passes by so quickly and we will be wishing everyone a Merry Christmas again before we know it. Unfortunately I will be very surprised if we manage to find the time to have a holiday this year but at least there will be weekends away for the various celebrations. I wish you all a very happy, healthy and Prosperous 2025 Until next time …. ichelle

New Stroke Selfhelp Support Group

I would like to introduce myself and give you some information about my reasons for starting this group. My name is Maureen, and I moved to Spain 3 years ago. I feel there is a need for the group because as far as I’m aware there is nothing else in the local area and I just wish that in my early days of surviving a stroke there had been a group close to me that I could have reached out to for support. The inspiration behind the group is my own experience of suffering a stroke and dealing with the different departments across the medical profession when feeling very vulnerable, lonely, anxious and needing reassurance. Also to recognise the invisible and emotional struggles which can be just as debilitating as the visible ones and knowing that reaching out for help can be overwhelming. In addition, I hope it helps people to share their problems with others who understand. I was a healthy professional business lady and during an eye test the optometrist, thought I had had a stroke because I had lost the sight in my left eye. (I was not aware of this because my right eye over compensated). The optician immediately referred me to a stroke consultant at my local hospital the next day. After an examination he said he was certain I had not had a stroke but would like to run further tests which included an ECG, and an MRI scan. At the end of a long day, he could confirm that I had not had a stroke but felt certain that I had a Brain Tumour lying behind the optic nerve of my left eye and consequently was referred to a neurology hospital. I had a consultation with the neurologist and after extensive tests it was confirmed I had a meningioma tumour. It was surgically removed with a craniotomy which went as planned although the tumour was not completely removed. During recovery I had a stroke which had affected my speech. However, I recovered and went back home. Subsequently I had a major stroke on the left side of my body and as I deteriorated it was established that I had also contracted bacterial meningitis. I was immediately taken to theatre for the 2nd craniotomy to have the meningitis flushed out of my brain which resulted in intravenous antibiotics, a blood transfusion and an induced coma and several months on a hospital ward, eventually being transferred to a rehabilitation unit for physiotherapy to build up my wasted muscles and to learn to walk. In due course I returned home where I suddenly developed a large lump on my left temple, and it was confirmed that the bone flap which covered my brain was infected. Once again, I had to have surgery on my brain to remove the bone flap. Then after a couple of months I underwent a cranioplasty to insert a plastic plate to protect my brain. I would not be alive today managing my disabilities from my strokes and meningitis if I had not received the help from the NHS and The Stroke Team. As a new group the activities will be flexible and can be adapted to meet the needs of members based upon their own feedback and experiences. I hope the group can achieve a feeling of belonging and offer hope to stroke survivors that their life as they knew it is not over, rather it is heading in a new direction. If you think this could be for you, please come along to our group on Tuesdays, 11am at The Bar, Guardamar Park (Rincon da Luna). Colour trends for 2025

Colour trends for 2025 are poised to reflect a blend of optimism, sustainability, and digital influence. Emphasizing a return to nature and wellness, many designers are drawing inspiration from organic hues and materials that promote a sense of calm and balance. One significant trend is the rise of earthy tones, such as warm terracottas, soft greens, and muted browns. These colours evoke a connection to the environment, mirroring a global shift towards eco-consciousness and natural living. Brands are increasingly incorporating these shades into their products, appealing to consumers seeking authenticity and a grounding aesthetic. In contrast, the digital world continues to shape colour trends, with vibrant, bold colours making a statement in both fashion and interior design. Expect to see bright neons and saturated jewel tones, reminiscent of the digital age and virtual experiences. These electric colours provide an energetic counterbalance to the more subdued earthy tones, reflecting a desire for positivity and creativity in design. Additionally, pastel shades are set to maintain their popularity, with soft blues, lilacs, and blush pinks appearing in various applications. These colours bring a sense of tranquillity and playfulness, perfect for personal spaces and fashion-forward choices. Metallic accents will also play a role in 2025’s colour palette, with reflective surfaces adding depth and luxury. Gold, silver, and iridescent colours can be seen enhancing both fashion and interior design, offering a touch of glamour. Overall, the colour trends of 2025 will showcase a dynamic interplay between natural inspiration and digital innovation, inviting consumers to express their individuality while remaining connected to the world around them. As sustainability and personal expression continue to be at the forefront, expect a palette that celebrates both nature and technology in harmonious balance.

More people move to Alicante

Alicante continues to be a popular place for people to live with an annual growth of nearly 10,000 residents for the second consecutive year. The population of the seaside city grew by 9,438, according to figures published in the Official State Gazette (BOE). It is the 10th largest city in Spain in terms of population with 358,720 inhabitants compared to the 2023 record of 349,282 people registered as living in Alicante. This puts it ahead of Bilbao, which has 348,089 inhabitants, but behind Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which has 380,436 registered inhabitants. Alicante city officials are confident this growth will continue and expect more than 500,000 people will be living there around the year 2050. The reason for the growth is the city’s ability to attract companies and its popularity as a place for digital nomads to work remotely. The largest cities, in terms of residents, are Madrid with around 3.4 million residents, Barcelona with 1.7 million and Valencia with around 800,000. These are followed by Seville, Zaragoza, Malaga, Murcia, Palma in Mallorca and Las Palmas. The number of people living in the province of Alicante is also on the rise and it has overtaken Seville as the fourth most populated province in Spain. The top three provinces, in order, are Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.

Benidorm wins two tourism awards

Benidorm's popularity as a holiday hot spot never wanes, with around 2.7 million tourists visiting the beautiful beach resort each year. Now it has won two awards for its green and tourism initiatives.

The Costa Blanca resort won the Award for Innovation in Destinations – Most Sustainable Destination at the Smart Travel News Awards 2024 gala and also the Environmental Sustainability 2024 award at the MICE Comunitat Valenciana ceremony. The Smart Travel News Awards recognise the innovation and leadership in the tourism sector. It presents awards to congratulate the work of companies and destinations whose projects are having a great impact in the fields of innovation and sustainability. Benidorm's tourism model is based on a commitment to the environment and making the most of limited natural resources, such as water. Its sustainability initiatives include reducing its water consumption, recycling and creating more bike lanes and pedestrianised areas. It promotes an eco-friendly lifestyle by reducing people's reliance on cars - as a compact city, it is easy to walk from beach to beach and around the various tourist hot spots such as the Old Town - and improving air quality. Crescendo International Choir Gave Several Successful Holiday Concerts

www.femalefocusonline.com

Crescendo International Choir gave several Christmas concerts in December, raising money for a variety of charitable causes. Most recently, the choir spread holiday cheer to residents and staff at the Casa Verde retirement home in Almoradi on Monday, December 16. The day before that, Crescendo sang five holiday songs at the main plaza in Los Montesinos in Spanish and English. The songs were The Little Drummer Boy, Campana sobre Campana, Ya Viena la Vieja, White Christmas and Feliz Navidad. Musical arrangements of the first four songs into four-part harmonies was done by Musical Director Irene Oliva. On December 9, Crescendo gave a free concert at La Siesta Evangelical Church in Torrevieja, raising over 336€. Funds donated at this event went to the church’s chosen charities. A week earlier, Crescendo gave a concert at Casa de Cultura in Benijofar. The event was free but a charity collection after the event raised over 308€ for the local food bank. Another important choir event also happened in December. That is, its Spanish pianist Antonio (Tony) Guillen is leaving Crescendo Choir after working in this role for 12 years. “Toni has been with us for many years and his enthusiasm and professionalism at the piano will be extremely missed by every member of the choir,” said Robin Myers, President of Crescendo International Choir. “But we wish him all the best for his future endeavours.” Do you like to sing, dear reader? The choir would be delighted to welcome new singers. The current choir includes expats from England, Scotland, Wales, the US, the Netherlands, Germany, and Scandinavia, among other nationalities. Choir rehearsals take place at Rincon de Miguel in Los Montesinos. They are held on Monday evenings from 17:45 to 19:45, starting on January 6. All singers are welcome. Foster Relationships New Year Resolutions: 4.Resolution: Improving relationships with family and friends is a

How to Maintain Them Beyond the First Week

As the year begins many individuals reflect on their lives and express a desire for change. The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions is a time-honoured way to articulate goals for the year ahead. However, numerous studies reveal that while many people begin the year with enthusiasm, most resolutions falter within the first few weeks. Here, we explore some of the best New Year’s resolutions and, crucially, how to sustain them well beyond the initial seven days.

1. Promote Physical Health Resolution: Whether it’s losing weight, exercising more, or adopting a healthier diet, improving your physical health is a common goal. Staying on Track: Start Small: Instead of committing to an hour at the gym every day, begin with 15-30 minutes of exercise a few times a week. Gradually increase as you become more comfortable. Schedule Workouts: Treat your workouts like important appointments. Adding them to your calendar can increase accountability. Find a Buddy: Working out with a friend can make the experience more enjoyable and boosts motivation. 2. Enhance Mental Well-being Resolution: Many people wish to improve their mental health by practicing mindfulness, meditation, or simply reducing stress. Staying on Track: Daily Mindfulness: Commit to just five minutes of mindfulness or meditation each day. Use Apps for guidance. Journaling: Spend a few minutes each day writing in a journal. Focus on gratitude or positive affirmations to cultivate a positive mindset. Digital Detox: Allocate specific times to disconnect from screens and focus on relaxing activities such as reading or walking in nature. 3. Improve Financial Stability Resolution: Setting financial goals, whether it’s saving money or reducing debt, is another popular resolution. Staying on Track: Create a Budget: Start by tracking your expenses for a few weeks. Use Apps or worksheets to categorise spending and identify areas for savings. Set Clear Goals: Define short-term and long-term financial goals, such as saving a specific amount each month. Clear, measurable targets make it easier to stay focused. Automate Savings: Set up automatic transfers to your savings account each payday to ensure consistent contributions without having to think about it.

vital resolution that enhances overall well-being. Staying on Track: Regular Check-ins: Set specific times to call or visit loved ones, even if it’s just for a quick chat. Make it a monthly or weekly ritual. Quality Time: Plan regular activities with friends or family that everyone enjoys, reinforcing connections and creating memories. Be Present: Practice active listening and putting away devices during conversations to strengthen relationships. 5. Pursue Personal Growth Resolution: This can be anything from reading more books, learning a new skill, or embarking on a new hobby. Staying on Track: Set Achievable Goals: Choose one skill or hobby to focus on initially, and set aside a specific time each week to dedicate to it. Join a Community: Find local classes or online forums related to your interests. Engaging with others can provide motivation and make learning more enjoyable. Track Progress: Keep a log of your progress, whether it’s books read or skills learned. Celebrating small achievements encourages continued effort. General Tips for Maintaining Resolutions Beyond the First Week Stay Flexible: Life is unpredictable. If you miss a workout or have an off day, don’t be discouraged. Adjust your goals as necessary rather than abandoning them altogether. Record Your Journey: Keeping a journal of your progress can not only motivate but also help identify patterns, successes, and challenges. Reward Yourself: Celebrate milestones, no matter how small. Treating yourself can help create positive associations with your goals. Seek Support: Whether it’s from friends, family, or online communities, having support can provide encouragement and accountability. Reflect and Reassess: Periodically review your resolutions. Are they still relevant? Are you on track? Reflection can help you stay committed and adapt to changes in your circumstances or priorities. Conclusion New Year’s resolutions can be powerful tools for personal growth and development. However, the key lies in developing sustainable habits that extend beyond the first week. By setting realistic goals, creating a support system, and maintaining flexibility, you can achieve your resolutions and set the tone for a fulfilling year ahead. This isn’t just about making resolutions; it’s about fostering a lifestyle that embraces continuous improvement and well-being. As you step into the new year, remember that every day is an opportunity to recommit to your goals. Embrace the journey, and celebrate your growth along the way!

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERMANENT AND NON-PERMANENT EXTENSIONS IN SPAIN. Navigating Spanish property regulations hinges on understanding the difference between permanent and non-permanent installations. This knowledge is key to grasping why seemingly straightforward light glazed extensions require major licenses, despite their apparent simplicity. Non-permanent fixtures encompass installations or building work that can be moved intact, without extensive disassembly or demolition. Examples include light prefabricated dog kennels and parasols. Additionally, structures made from materials that naturally deteriorate over shorter periods, usually 5-10 years, fall under the non-permanent category. In contrast, permanent fixtures are those that resist easy relocation or rapid decay. This includes glazed areas, aluminium roofs, and covered patios, intentionally designed for lasting integration. Material doesn't dictate permanence; for example, both wooden and aluminium roofs are considered permanent. Conversely, an aluminium parasol with wheels is deemed non-permanent by authorities. Within Spain's legal framework, any permanent extension, regardless of its material, demands a major license if it: • Features a roof, expanding the property's size and altering its exterior or semi-interior space. • Adds rooms or introduces new uses to the property, even if detached. The impact of permanent installations goes beyond the physical, extending to: • Property Tax and Title Deed Alignment: As in the UK, permanent installations can affect billed rates and misalign with property documents. • Habitable Conditions: Spanish regulations mandate ventilation and natural light access, which enclosures can compromise. • Legal Ramifications: Unauthorised permanent extensions may lead to fines or demolition orders, disrupting property transactions and devaluing assets. Thankfully, a solution lies in obtaining a retrospective license, available through qualified Spanish architects. This step safeguards unlicensed extensions from objections, regardless of future legal changes. Conditions for obtaining a Retrospective License remain consistent across regions: • In Murcia, extensions must be at least 4 years old. • In Almeria, building work must be over 6 years old. • In Alicante, construction should have concluded before August 2010. Once confirmed, Martinez de la Casa Architects streamlines the issuance process. The resulting certification, stamped by the Official College of Architects or Notarised, is delivered within 10 working days, ensuring compliance and protection. Martinez de la Casa Architects, a trusted authority in Building Certification, offers solutions encompassing Energy Performance Certificates, Habitation/Occupation Licences, and Retrospective Licences. Our comprehensive services underscore the value of compliance and property enhancement. For inquiries or appointments, please call 665 810 411 (English) or explore www.martinezdelacasa.com, where a wealth of over 300 testimonials awaits. Aries: Start this year as you mean to continue it. With Mars, your assertive planetary leader in a slow, profound retrograde, progress may be slowed down. The Full Moon in Cancer on the 13th brings you something you desire: wait and see! Taurus: Venus and Pisces are in cahoots from January 11th. Focus on changing those dreams and aspirations into a reality. You need to look deeply inside yourself and have faith. Neptune is the leader of Pisces and has an ever watchful eye over you! Gemini: Venus is conjunct with your North Node and the New Moon is in the eighth house of Capricorn. Both are indicating a stronger energy over financial matters on all levels. It could be success with a loan, a windfall or a that a gamble finally pays off! Cancer: Don’t let a difference of opinion divide you and your family. Though you may like to leave your shell to give someone a nasty nip, it really isn’t worth it. Tensions have arisen because your sign is conjunct with a retrograde Mars calling the shots! Leo: Your planetary leader, the Sun enters Aquarius on the 19th of the month with attention moving to the eleventh house of friendships and networking. Long term goals are favoured, but this is a time to give group activities the benefit of the doubt too. Virgo: Virgos constantly thrive on perfection and this month it appears that many blocks have caused you to make alternative plans. With assertive Mars in retrograde in Cancer, progress is slow, but it’s better than nothing and you didn’t move the goalposts anyhow! Libra: Time to focus on a relationship of the heart that is brought

about by a romantic Venus entering Pisces in league with the Karmic North Node. Time to make a decision based on your deepening spiritual energies and which way you really wish to go. Scorpio: The New Moon in Capricorn, compatible with Taurus, highlights long distance travel for either business or pleasure this month. Expect the unexpected when it comes to the yet unknown destination. Energies are favourable to make this trip! Sagittarius: Sibling rivalry appears to be getting worse rather than better and now something has to be done. Cancer is influencing retrograde Mars bringing frustration, jealousy and anger. Someone has to swallow their pride but won’t give in without a fight! Capricorn: A Paradigm Shift is in the 2nd house of personal finance this month. A time to review and check your finances and all aspects of your financial dealings should be under the microscope, because something doesn’t add up somewhere along the line! Aquarius: As the Sun leaves Capricorn a new interest is out there on the horizon, but it won’t gather momentum until the beginning of February. With your trusty leader Uranus shining a light on business, and your career plans, take things as they come: no hurry! Pisces: Venus is exalted in Pisces and Neptune, your mysterious leader, is collaborating but playing his cards very close to his chest. The effect is that ideas and opportunities are being missed when this is a time for action: loud and clear!
