How do we know that? Seeing with radio waves!

Hello again, in previous months talking about astronomy, I've talked about how we know the distances of stars etc. This months how do we know that, is a little different. Astronomy is a very ancient science, but for thousands of years it relied on what people could see, firstly with only their eyes, and then starting with Galileo using telescopes. Taking measurements and developing maths to use those measurements taught us a lot, thank you Isaac Newton.

In the 1800s it was realised that the light we see with has other frequencies that we can't see, such as infra red and ultra violet and gradually we understood that light was part of what's called the electromagnetic spectrum. Radio waves, gamma rays, x rays and loads more are all part of this.

Astronomers found all these discoveries in science fascinating, and began to wonder what it would be like to see with radio waves. This really began in the 1930s when a telephone engineer, Karl Jansky couldn't find the cause of radio noise in his equipment, at first he thought it was from the sun, but an astronomer friend realised it was from the constellation Sagittarius. This was happening only a few years after the discovery of the nature of galaxies by Edwin Hubble who the space telescope is named after. The radio interference, it was realised was from the centre of our galaxy so that is how we know where the centre of our galaxy is. This is something no one will ever be able to see with our eyes, all the dust between us and the centre blocks the light, but radio waves etc can reach us through the mire. It's a bit like being able to hear your radio on a foggy day.

The second world war began not long after all that, and massive advances were made with radio equipment and what radio waves do, but everything discovered was a secret. In the 1950s several groups such as the Mullard radio astronomy group were set up and the real dawn of modern astronomy began and observations flooded in, a radio map of the sky was initiated and things got very complicated very quickly. The maths needed was huge especially with what's called Fourier transforms which I'm not even going to attempt to explain, Google it if you're interested. Fortunately this was also the beginning of the computer age and early computers like Titan made progress possible.

Learning about a whole new astronomy and finding objects with radio waves that we never even suspected would exist has been going on for only about 70 years so whilst we now know that a radio universe is very different to what we see with our eyes there is bound to be a whole lot more to come.

THE AIRCREW ASSOCIATION COSTA BLANCA

The association, formed in 1988, exists to foster comradeship amongst those who, having been awarded an official flying badge, have qualified to operate military aircraft and are serving or have served, as military aircrew in the armed forces of the United Kingdom or those nations which are allies of the United Kingdom or the Commonwealth.

If you are interested in joining this popular association or would like to know more, please call the Secretary on 96 649 5228.

It has been very upsetting to see some of the horrific situations caused by the recent downpours in our province. With so many lives lost, homes and belongings destroyed, it gives us all hope how our community pulls together in times of need. There has been many organised events for fund raising as well as lots of places collecting donations to try to make life a little easier for the ones that have suffered. Many volunteers have given up their spare time to partake in the clean up operations required and we all admire the efforts from all of those concerned. Let's hope and pray we don't have to deal with these disasters again in the near future.

By now you will have seen the Autumn / Winter Focus On Professional Services magazine in various outlets along the Costa Blanca South…. if you haven't already got your copy then be sure to pick one up - you never know when you might need to use one of the published services.

I am looking forward to the festive period when I'm hoping for little time off to be able to relax and recharge my batteries after what has been a very hectic few months. As always, I would like to thank all our readers, clients and contributors for their continued support and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2025. And good luck in the El Gordo draw.

Favourite Christmas markets in Spain

If you're looking for a traditional or handcrafted Christmas gift, then the special festive markets are the places to look. Valencia has several markets, including a craft market in the Plaza de la Reina, which is ideal for artisanal goods, and an impressive market in the City of Arts and Sciences with a range of handmade artisanal products and food trucks.

You can always treat yourself to a long weekend away, if you fancy visiting the markets a little further from home, such as: Madrid's main square, Plaza Mayor, is transformed into a Christmas wonderland, with more than 100 stalls selling festive goodies—from decorations to nativity scenes—and offering great gift ideas.

The birthplace of Cervantes, the lovely little town of Alcala de Henares is about 40 kilometres from Madrid, so you could combine it with a trip to the capital city. Plaza de Cervantes hosts the Christmas market, which features plenty of stalls, festival lights, a huge Christmas tree, and an old-fashioned carousel for the kids.

Why not sail over to Mallorca on the ferry from Dénia to get into the Christmas spirit? Palma de Mallorca's Christmas fair is held in the noble streets in and around Plaza Mayor, Plaza de España and La Rambla. Again, you'll find a lovely selection of stalls selling everything from Christmas tree decorations to ceramics and jewellery.

If Christmas lights delight you, head north to the lovely Galician city of Vigo, which spends months putting up millions of lights to illuminate around 420 streets and squares. This year, it is also expected to put up the tallest Christmas tree in the world, standing at around 50 metres high. Around 100 food and craft stalls make up the traditional Christmas market - with all those lights, you can’t miss it!

Festive sweets in Spain

Tuck into turrón

For centuries, the people of Jijona and Alicante have used what their land offers them. Thanks to an abundance of almond trees and local honey, they are able to make many varieties of delicious turrón, which is similar to nougat. Look out for the ones marked turrón de Jijona and turrón de Alicante as they are simply the best. They’re packed with almonds and sweetened with honey and sugar. Jijona is known as the birthplace of turrón and you can visit the factories to see the sweets being made and sample some of the finished products. All major supermarkets sell them and you can buy hard or soft varieties in different flavours, including chocolate. A firm favourite is turrón de Jijona 1880.

Savour Valor chocolate

The pretty town of Villajoyosa is where you’ll find the Valor chocolate museum. You can pop in to find out how the chocolate is made and about its lengthy history - Valor has been going since 1881. The taste is sublime, thanks to the quality of the cocoa beans.

A selection box of Valor chocolates is a great way to sample some of the different flavours, including almonds, orange, figs and vanilla. For a winter warmer, try the Valor hot chocolate which is incredibly thick and pairs wonderfully with churros. You can also buy the chocolates online or in the Valor shops - there are ones in Dénia, Benidorm and Alicante as well as Villajoyosa.

Powdery polvorones

Polvorones comes from polvo, the Spanish word for powder, and with good reason. These crumbly biscuits turn to dust in your mouth. They’re delicious with an afterdinner coffee.

The king of cakes

Roscón de Reyes is the traditional cake to celebrate Three Kings Day, so it's a great excuse to keep on enjoying sweet treats into January! You can make your own cake, which is a flavoured sweet bread as you can then choose your favourite ingredients to add to the mix such as orange, cinnamon or a dash of rum. In the shape of a ring, the cake also has a special surprise of a small figurine - a king or the baby Jesus - and a dried bean. Whoever finds the figurine in their slice will have good luck. If you find the dried bean, tradition says you have to pay for the cake.

Crescendo International Choir Gave Successful 20th

Anniversary Concert

Crescendo International Choir performed an extremely successful 20th anniversary concert on Saturday, October 26, at Salt Church in Los Montesinos. A wide variety of popular music covering the last twenty years of Crescendo’s existence was sung. Many of the songs performed go much further back in time, however. The choir opened its concert with the foot-stomping song The Greatest Show, from the 2017 musical, The Greatest Showman. Then reaching back to the earliest period of the choir’s existence, the years 2004-2009, the choir sang Chattanooga Choo Choo, first performed by Glen Miller and his Orchestra in 1941. Then they followed up with I Have a Dream, Living Love and Play for Me a Simple Melody. This last song was written by Irving Berlin for a 1914 musical.

For the years 2009-2014, they performed The Humming Chorus from the famous opera Madame Butterfly. After that, the choir entertained the audience with Begin the Beguine, written by Cole Porter in 1935, and The Rhythm of Life, from a 1966 Broadway musical. After that, there was a break where a raffle was held.

For the years 2014 to 2019, the choir sang the Spanish song El Vito, then Viva la Vida by Coldplay and Thank You for the Music by ABBA. For the final part of the concert, covering the years 2019 up to the present, they performed Fix You by Coldplay, the Spanish song Clavelitos (Little Carnations), Sway and a medley of tunes from the popular musical Les Misérables.

During the concert, the names of choir members who passed away in the last 20 years was also shared with the audience.

This concert was a ticket only event, and from the proceeds the choir gave away 1000€ in charity donations.

The choir would be delighted to welcome new singers. The current choir includes people from England, Scotland, Wales, the US, the Netherlands, Germany, and Scandinavia, among other nationalities. Crescendo’s Music Director, Irene Oliva, and pianist, Antonio Guillen, are accomplished Spanish musicians.

Choir rehearsals take place at Rincon de Miguel in Los Montesinos. They are held on Monday evenings from 17:45 to 19:45. All singers are welcome.

For more details about the choir, see www.crescendo-choir.com. You can also follow the group on Facebook at Crescendo Choir. If you have questions, email info@crescendo-choir.com.

All of them offer unique pieces, handmade and, if you wish, personalised according to your preferences.

If you're looking for something practical, like a handbag or a handmade backpack, you can find that too. These fairs provide many options for meaningful and unique presents.

In the fairs the artisans display a selection of their work at their stalls: decorative ceramics, exclusive jewellery, watercolours, pyrography, painted stones and paper maché figures. Best places for a family Christmas break

If you're stuck for Christmas gift ideas for your family, why not treat them to a festive break instead? The memories will live forever! As well as visiting places such as Palma de Mallorca or Madrid for their fabulous Christmas markets, there are many places in Spain which are perfect for a winter break. Grand parade in Alcoy

One of the oldest Three Kings Parades is held in Alcoy. Dating from 1885, or thereabouts, it brings thousands of visitors to the historic city. On January 5, excitement builds as the Three Kings arrive with a huge entourage. This colourful parade is so impressive it has been declared a Fiesta of National Touristic Interest. More than 1,000 people take part in the parade in and around the Plaza de España, including musicians and dancing groups. The fun ends with fireworks and the rousing Handel's Messiah.

Let there be snow

The little principality of Andorra, in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, is perfect if you want to see snow at Christmas. Up until Christmas Eve, the little ones can also visit Father Christmas in traditional mountain huts or in some of the ski resorts. Andorra has more than 300 kilometres of slopes for skiing or you could try out the zip wire, go sledging or build an igloo.

Dazzling displays in Malaga

Malaga pulls out all the stops at Christmas with festive lights, and an amazing light and sound show. For the past couple of years, 16 huge angels lit up Calle Larios street. And this year's display promises to be equally as dazzling. The light and sound show takes place in the evenings until January 6, apart from on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Other city streets have plenty of lights as well as giant trees and Christmas chandeliers. You may need to pack your sunglasses!

A BUSY TIME FOR SPANGLES

Readers may remember how excited Spangles members were with the beautiful capes, donated by sponsors, when they found out they were going to Prague in the Czech Republic for a major competition.

On Thursday, 7 November, they arrived in Prague after a long journey and were greeted at the airport by guide, Klara. Friday gave members free time to explore some of this lovely city before joining several other choirs, for a public concert in the evening, in the beautiful Jan Huss church in Dejvice.

Saturday was competition day, held in the illustrious surroundings of Martinú Hall, now used as a music academy within the beautiful Lichtenstein Palace, After a long but very enjoyable day, competing against some excellent choirs, everyone sat in the concert hall as the prize winners were announced.

Spangles members jumped for joy as they were announced as bronze winners in their category! Musical Director, Barbara Burks, went on stage to receive the award as Spangles members whooped and clapped. “I am so proud of every single member of Spangles” she said. “Everyone has worked so hard for this moment, including the ones who were unable to make the trip with us.”

Spangles celebrated in style that evening, at a beautiful Italian restaurant not too far from their hotel. Not too late a night out because they needed to be up bright and early Sunday morning! They were going to the famous St Vitus Cathedral to sing at mass and during the service.

Temperatures were very low in Prague, reaching a crisp -1 on Sunday morning. Inside the cathedral, it was -2! However, Spangles were warmed by the honour of being asked to sing during communion. After mass, Klara took them to a local cafe, where they warmed up with some delicious rum and hot chocolate…..

They then made their way to the riverside, where they joined all the other singers for a river cruise and buffet. Lots of beautiful food, singing and laughter made the time fly by and they bid each other farewell.

“It was a well-organised weekend, and we have such beautiful memories that will stay with us forever” said Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines. “An unforgettable trip!.”

...continued on next page

Despite the low temperatures, Spangles has local businesses to thank for their sponsorship of the beautiful capes that kept them warm throughout: The Salon, May Dental Clinic and the Gurkha Durbar restaurant. “Those capes were so cosy and warm. We couldn’t have done without them.” said Lyn. They have returned safely to Los Alcázares where they celebrated their win with Antonio Lopez Campoy, Concejal de Cultura, when he thanked them for representing Los Alcázares. They are now preparing for their busy Christmas season and hope to see friends and supporters at the various venues.

Spangles are gearing up to their usual busy festive season, where they will be singing at various venues around their home town of Los Alcázares. If you’re in the area, here’s a list of where they will be appearing:

5 December 16.00 - Spangles Christmas Afternoon Tea (Ticket Event)The Butterfly Garden, San Javier.

9 December 11.00 - Christmas Market - The 19th Hole, Terrazas de La Torre Golf.

12 December 11.00 - 12.30 - Christmas at Iceland Overseas Supermarket, San Javier.

12 December 13.30 - Spangles Christmas Lunch (Private), Gurkha Durbar Restaurant, Los Alcázares.

14 December 16.00 - Christmas at El Valle (Christmas Market), El Valle Golf Resort Baños y Mendigo.

19 December 16.00 - Christmas at The Pavilion, Avenida Costa Blanca 122, Pilar de la Horadada.

Spangles is a ladies’ a cappella chorus, singing in four part harmony. They rehearse every Thursday, from 10.30 am to 1.00 pm at Centro Municipal Las Claras, Calle Helena, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares and visitors are always welcome. If you’d like to book the chorus for an event or you are thinking about joining them, you can find out more on their website: www.spangleschorus.com or email info@spangleschorus.com.

A MEGA MARATHON

IN DECEMBER

After an amazingly successful year of performing concerts at many venues and raising over 1000€ for various charities, Melody Makers Singing Group Quesada, will definitely not be sitting back and resting over the Christmas period. December is definitely going to be a marathon of Concerts for the group in the run up to Christmas. They have over 10 concerts lined up in December and several booked for January, so popular are the singing group that they have even had to sadly turn down invitations to perform at events as they hadn’t enough days in the month to fit all the offers in.

The groups popularity and fame is growing, so much so that even though they were only formed 2 years ago, all their hard work and dedication has paid off and they have been invited to sing at many charity Christmas Events.

The Melody Makers Singing Group’s final event of the Christmas season is at the very prestigious event ‘Carols in the Square’ in Torrevieja, on Friday 13th at 6pm. It will be the group’s first appearance at the event and they are honoured to be asked to take to the stage to sing as they are the only English choir to be invited to this year’s event.

With all these musical events ahead the singing group are currently working very hard with rehearsals to make sure their performances are up to their usual high standards.

Melody Makers Singing Group Quesada are always ready to offer a warm welcome to new members, so if you like singing and are looking for a new interest, why not come along and see what we do? We are a mixed, international singing group and we rehearse every Tuesday, 2-4pm at Lakeview bar and restaurant, 16 Calle Toledo, Quesada, no audition necessary, we sing for fun and raise money for charity along the way, so why not come along and meet us?

The Path to Compliance: Realities of Light Enclosures for Patios

& Terraces in Spain

Patios and semi-open porches have long been a hallmark of Spain’s charming Mediterranean architecture, offering cool breezes and shaded retreats. While the allure of outdoor living is ingrained in Spain’s lifestyle, it’s essential to be informed about the regulations surrounding enclosed spaces. Here are five eye-opening facts to consider:

Unseen Consequences of Light Enclosures. The enchantment of Spain’s outdoor spaces often leads property owners to enclose patios, semi-open porches, terraces, and more with light aluminium enclosures. Although easy and cost-effective to install, these light enclosures require a major licence due to their substantial impact on property dynamics. Enclosed areas contribute to property size, alter its description and affect ventilation and light. Ignoring these factors can lead to unexpected legal complications.

Legal Implications and Fines. The Spanish system mandates that these light enclosures, regardless of their lightweight nature, necessitate a major licence. Failure to obtain the proper licence can result in fines and even demolition orders if detected by authorities. Fines, often surpassing 300€ per sqm, can escalate quickly. For instance, a modest 10sqm enclosure could trigger a 3,000€ fine. Additionally, these unlicenced structures can disrupt the property’s selling process and devalue its market price.

Safeguarding Your Investment. If you’ve already installed such enclosures, a solution exists. A retrospective licence from a qualified Spanish Architect can shield your extension from objections, fines or demolition orders by any authority, irrespective of future legal changes. This proactive step can

provide peace of mind and protect your property’s value.

Conditions for Obtaining a Retrospective Licence. The process to rectify unlicenced enclosures retrospectively is straight forward. Depending on your location, the building work must meet specific conditions. In Murcia, extensions must be at least 4 years old, while in Almeria, the requirement is over 6 years. Alicante mandates completion before August 2010. Notably, extensions previously fined or ordered for demolition are ineligible for retrospective licences.

The Path to Resolution. Obtaining a retrospective licence is straightforward. Upon confirmation, Martinez de la Casa Architects will schedule a visit to survey your extension or pool, requiring only your NIE and current Title-Deeds. The resulting Retrospective Licence, stamped by the Official College of Architects or Notarised, will be delivered within a guaranteed 10 working days.

Seeking Clarity and Compliance. Martinez de la Casa Architects leads the way in Building Certification in Spain. Cost-wise, a Pool Retrospective Licence (Certificate of Antiquity) is 326€, and Extensions cost 363€, (covering all extensions on the property). Beyond retrospective licences, we offer Energy Performance Certificates and Habitation/Occupation Licences, providing comprehensive solutions for property owners.
