The Red Cross in Guardamar receives nearly 170 cleaning and personal hygiene kits
On the 25th of April, Specsavers Ópticas and Rotary Club Guardamar visited the Red Cross warehouse in Guardamar to deliver kits of toiletries and cleaning products for the home. They delivered 48 men’s kits, 48 women’s kits, 24 for children and babies and 48 cleaning kits – nearly 170 in total. The charity will now distribute them to those in need in Guardamar, who find it impossible to afford the high cost of these items.
Francisco Jurado is President of the Rotary Club Guardamar and store director of Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar, Torrevieja and La Zenia and has been working on this campaign since December last year. All the stores collected products from generous customers and residents in December and January and collections were also undertaken through the Rotary Club.
To fulfil the need identified by the charity, financial donations were also made by the Rotary Club Guardamar and the Specsavers Ópticas stores that Francisco runs. They are very proud to present this donation to the charity, which will make a real difference to vulnerable individuals and families living in this area.
He explains, ‘We are delighted to support the Red Cross in Guardamar, an excellent charity, that we have supported many times in the past. The charity contacted us in December last year to say that they had a shortage of baby care products, cleaning products and toiletries and asked for support.
Unfortunately, many people in our community are struggling with the increasing cost of food and basic supplies and so the demand has significantly grown. We’d like to thank everyone who donated during the collection period, and the team at Rotary for their fundraising efforts. These kits will make an enormous difference to families who are really struggling.’
Guardamar’s Rotary Club raises funds for a number of local charities, as well as supporting and developing initiatives which are positive for the community. They regularly support the Red Cross, IES Les Dunes secondary school in Guardamar, the local food bank and Cáritas. They fundraise through events and collections in association with local businesses and are collecting used glasses to give the gift of sight. They are also working hard on a new project to support students at the IES Les Dunes high school in Guardamar through training and professional development. This will make it easier for the students to find jobs when they leave school.
Direct Cremation Plan Option
Jennifer Cunningham Insurances are pleased to be able to now provide a Direct Cremation Plan, which provides everything you need at a lower cost. Our clients have been requesting this alternative for some time as a combination of both cost of living rises and social changes, which has resulted in our requirements for funerals to alter.
The Direct Cremation plan includes everything necessary for an unattended cremation and provides all the paperwork required.
Especially for the Expats and their families, funerals can be a very stressful and complicated experience. When you purchase a funeral plan, you are making the whole process far easier and less stressful for your loved ones.
Prices are fixed, with either full payment or with a deposit and a payment schedule of up to 60 months, which is interest free. There is no medical required, no health restrictions and no limit on age.
In Spain, the funeral usually happens very quickly after death, which can be frightening and daunting for your family members to deal with. I cannot understand why you would not organise this, to help your loved ones at this very difficult time.
One phone call and the plan goes into operation. There is a choice of four plans, and all the documentation required is included.
If you decide that a funeral plan is not for you, you must make sure that your wishes are known, money is available immediately and that at least one of your loved ones has an NIE number. In line with Spanish law, direct cremation usually takes place 24-72 hours after death and prolonging this will incur extra mortuary expenses.
Death is always traumatic and exhausting – why make it even harder for those left behind. If you would like more information or a quotation, please contact one of my offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.
Sweet Caroline Blue Jeans
Cracklin’ Rosie all the hits and more
Fortunately I survived our girls weekend in Minehead, at Butlins, although I did return to Spain a little croaky voiced with a few aches and pains, all due to the laughing, singing and dancing that took place. It has been a long time since I had so much fun and my fitbit steps showed just how much dancing, walking and waving my arms in the air was done. What also helped was the fabulous weather we had…only a few spots of rain one evening. Already we are all looking at booking up to do the same next year.
Following our return, we had a party at our friends bar to celebrate her turning the big 50…. a few surprises came along in the form of family and friends that no one was expecting, so the weekend ended up being busier than anticipated due to all the entertaining we had to take part in.
By now you will have seen the new edition of the Professionals Services magazine for our area in various outlets and will find there are even more trustworthy businesses offering their services. Be sure to keep hold of your copy for future reference, you never know when you may need to get in touch with one of them, whether for selling / buying a property, a tradesmen for your home and garden, or to upgrade or upkeep your vehicle, we've got it all covered.

Celebrate the start of summer with the popular hogueras fiesta in Alicante featuring stunning displays of pyrotechnics, colourful - and very largestatues, music and incredible fireworks. The best place to enjoy the hogueras fiesta is in Alicante city itself during the weeks leading up to San Juan day on June 24.
The fiesta includes the mighty mascletàs each day at 2pm at the Plaza de los Luceros from Tuesday June 18 until Monday June 24. The mascletà is a rhythmic display of pyrotechnics whose sound can build up to an incredible crescendo of 120 decibels or more.
Other events not to be missed in Alicante include a night mascletà in Calle Francisco Muñoz Llorens at 11.30pm on Friday June 7; bands and a parade from 6.30pm in the city centre on Saturday June 8; another mascletà at Avenida Pintor Xavier Soler, at the roundabout of the Gran Vía shopping centre, at 2pm on Saturday June 15; and the offering of flowers to the patron saint, the Virgen del Remedio, on Friday June 21 and Saturday June 22.
Another incredible firework show, La Palmera, takes place from the top of Santa Bárbara castle at midnight on June 24. Around 1,200 rockets are fired simultaneously to explode to form a palm tree which lights up the city. This display signals the start of the cremá or burning of the giant statues, starting with the one by the town hall.

It’s time to enjoy your retirement
For many residents of the Costa Blanca, maintaining a villa can become increasingly burdensome over time. If you find yourself in this situation, it may be worth considering a move to an independent living resort such as Ciudad Patricia, which offers a lifestyle designed to make life easier and more enjoyable.
Maintaining a villa involves constant attention to tasks such as gardening, pool cleaning, and general repairs, which can become overwhelming. At Ciudad Patricia, these responsibilities are managed for you, allowing you to enjoy your time without the stress of property upkeep. The resort’s professional staff ensure that all maintenance needs are met, freeing you from these time-consuming tasks.
Moreover, Ciudad Patricia offers a vibrant and active community tailored to your lifestyle. The resort features beautifully landscaped gardens, a variety of social activities, and top-notch facilities including a fitness centre, swimming pools, and an arts and crafts hobby room. These amenities provide ample opportunities for social engagement and physical activity, fostering a sense of community and well-being among residents.
Another significant advantage of Ciudad Patricia is the availability of medical assistance and support around the clock. This ensures that residents have access to necessary healthcare services at any time, providing peace of mind and enhancing the overall sense of security. As needs change over time, the resort offers different levels of care, ensuring that residents receive appropriate support without having to relocate.
Financially, relocating to Ciudad Patricia can be a prudent decision. Selling a villa can release substantial capital, providing greater financial flexibility and reducing the ongoing expenses associated with property maintenance. This can allow for a more comfortable and worry-free retirement.
In conclusion, moving to an independent living resort like Ciudad Patricia offers numerous benefits, including reduced maintenance responsibilities, a vibrant community, enhanced security, and financial flexibility. For those seeking a more manageable and enjoyable lifestyle on the Costa Blanca, Ciudad Patricia presents an excellent option. HOW TO SEE A STAR GOING NOVA
I had better start at the beginning, what does going nova mean? The word comes from Latin and means new. In astronomy it refers to a new star, a star that suddenly appears in the night sky. This happens because a star suddenly increases in brightness from one that is invisible to the naked eye, to one that can be seen.
Stars are graded in brightness, the dimmest that can be seen with perfect eyes on a very clear night are called magnitude 6 and the lower the number the brighter the star. The bright star Vega in the constellation Lyra is magnitude 1 and a full moon is minus 13.
Ok, so now you know what a nova star is, please don't confuse it with a supernova, a very rare event when a certain type of star massively explodes.
The nova star I'm taking about is actually 2 stars very close together, a binary star, in this case a very large red giant and a white dwarf in close orbit around each other, and what happens between them is fascinating.
The white dwarf is a shrunken old star that has used up all its fuel, but still has lots of mass and gravity. Over time its gravity attracts material, mostly hydrogen from the red giant which builds up on the surface. It keeps doing this until there is so much that it gets hot and explodes. As you can imagine a huge layer of gas on even a small star’s surface gives off a huge flash, and the event can last for several days, this is a nova.
The star that will be having this event is called T Coronae Borealis, and it’s about 3000 light years from Earth. Coronae Borealis is an easy to find constellation in our northern sky near Hercules, not far from the star Vega I mentioned earlier.
It’s quite unusual for us to know when a star is likely to do this, but in this case we know that it goes off about every 80 years, and is now due. Assuming it doesn’t happen between me writing and you reading this, it should happen before September, and go to a similar brightness to the pole star, Polaris.
As far as is known, there are less than a dozen systems like this in our galaxy, so this is quite a special event. To see it go out on a clear night and find the constellation, then look carefully at the stars, and make a mental note of where the star T (Theta Coronae Borealis) is. Then look again through binoculars, and you’ll see the star, it’s quite dim. When it goes nova, you’ll see a massive difference, and have witnessed one of the wonders of astronomy. It should stay bright for up to a week, so you can let your imagination loose on what it would look like close up.
Happy observing everyone.

Charles Oates, Vega Baja Astronomy Group.Go nuts for HORCHATA in Valencia
Horchata is the traditional summer drink in the Valencia region. Until August, you can find out more about the history and cultivation of horchata (orxata in valenciano), which is made with tiger nuts, during a visit to Món Orxata, in Alboraya, just north of the city of Valencia.
During the tour you can visit an orchard where the organic tiger nuts (chufas) are cultivated and find out more about its rich history before visiting the artisan Orxata Factory and tasting the drink accompanied by handmade fartons.
As well being incredibly refreshing, the tiger nut itself is very good for your health, with high levels of iron and potassium. It does not contain sodium and is low in fat, while being rich in minerals and vitamins.

Help at Home Costa Blanca Charity (CIF No: G54562723
Registered Charity No: CV-01-048327-A ) was first established back in 2010 when a few like-minded people got together to see how we could offer help for the community in the home as we found social services were lacking in this regard.
There were several reasons we felt requirements in the community needed to be addressed including - in the instances where a partner had had an operation and there was little or no aftercare provided, or when someone had need of some time to go shopping and a partner needed looking after, or many people didn't know the process to ask for help to cover attendance allowances and the list goes on.
Help at Home Costa Blanca was formed with volunteers to help with Welfare of the community.
During this time we found many local people wanted to donate clothing or items we could sell to raise money to cover the administration costs of the Charity.
We started in the shed at the Emerald Isle and now have a thriving charity shop in Playa Flamenca commercial centre for clothing and bric a brac etc, then we moved our head office to the new Community Hub in Playa Flamenca.
We have built up an excellent reputation in the community and we always wish to do more.
DONATIONS NEEDED
We do need your help to continue funding the excellent work that we strive to do.
To fund these services our shops rely on funds generated from the kind donations we receive. We ask all of you to think of us and donate any items you no longer have a use for anything from small furniture, kitchenware to clothing, jewellery to electronics. If you have any items you wish to donate, please drop them in to our shop in Playa Flamenca.
We really do appreciate all your help as every donation big or small counts.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERMANENT AND NON-PERMANENT EXTENSIONS IN SPAIN.
Navigating Spanish property regulations hinges on understanding the difference between permanent and nonpermanent installations. This knowledge is key to grasping why seemingly straightforward light glazed extensions require major licenses, despite their apparent simplicity.
Non-permanent fixtures encompass installations or building work that can be moved intact, without extensive disassembly or demolition. Examples include light prefabricated dog kennels and parasols. Additionally, structures made from materials that naturally deteriorate over shorter periods, usually 5-10 years, fall under the non-permanent category.
In contrast, permanent fixtures are those that resist easy relocation or rapid decay. This includes glazed areas, aluminum roofs, and covered patios, intentionally designed for lasting integration. Material doesn't dictate permanence; for example, both wooden and aluminum roofs are considered permanent. Conversely, an aluminum parasol with wheels is deemed non-permanent by authorities.
Within Spain's legal framework, any permanent extension, regardless of its material, demands a major license if it:
• Features a roof, expanding the property's size and altering its exterior or semi-interior space.
• Adds rooms or introduces new uses to the property, even if detached.
The impact of permanent installations goes beyond the physical, extending to:
• Property Tax and Title Deed Alignment: As in the UK, permanent installations can affect billed rates and misalign with property documents.
• Habitable Conditions: Spanish regulations mandate ventilation and natural light access, which enclosures can compromise.
• Legal Ramifications: Unauthorized permanent extensions may lead to fines or demolition orders, disrupting property transactions and devaluing assets.
Thankfully, a solution lies in obtaining a retrospective license, available through qualified Spanish architects. This step safeguards unlicensed extensions from objections, regardless of future legal changes.
Conditions for obtaining a Retrospective License remain consistent across regions:
• In Murcia, extensions must be at least 4 years old.
• In Almeria, building work must be over 6 years old.
• In Alicante, construction should have concluded before August 2010.
Once confirmed, Martinez de la Casa Architects streamlines the issuance process. The resulting certification, stamped by the Official College of Architects or Notarized, is delivered within 10 working days, ensuring compliance and protection.

Crescendo International Choir Raises Money for Benijofar Food Bank
Crescendo International Choir gave a free concert at Casa de Cultura in Benijofar on Saturday, May 18, raising 230€ for the Benijofar food bank. The business sponsor for the Benijofar concert was Rincon de Mateos, a local bakery, who supplied coffee and biscuits to concert attendees in exchange for donations.
The theme of this concert was movies and musicals. Some songs featured were Sound of Music medley, (this popular film is called Sonrisas y Lagrimas in Spanish), Memory from the musical Cats, Unchained Melody from the movie Ghost and City of Stars from the movie La La Land.
Dates for your diary.
On Sunday June 16, the choir will be performing for the first time at Palau de Altea, a performing arts theatre in the lovely seaside town of Altea. The choir is also gearing up for its 20th anniversary concert on October 26 at the Salt Church in Los Montesinos, so mark your calendars now!

HELP Vega Baja
Many people ask us how the charity started....so, long post but interesting. We are proud to be associated with the charity and to follow in the steps of such caring individuals.
The story of this organisation begins in 1980 when Margaret Scarborow and three other women met in the Turing Restaurant in Torrevieja, initially as a self-support group. At that time there were only 270 British people living in the area, registered with the British Consulate. Registrations were undertaken in a local restaurant when a member of the consulate team would take your details and you would be included in the register.
Inspired by the HELP group in Jávea, the ladies set about organising a group of interested people who would be the first HELP volunteers in Torrevieja. With no money to set up the organisation, the women paid for essential writing materials and set about considering how they could raise money to purchase equipment for physically disabled people in the community (a service which continues today by the charity).
A monthly lunch was organised and a raffle was held (prizes again donated by the women). With the support of around forty people, enough money was raised to buy the first wheelchair. The first HELP committee was formed with Jim Duffy as Chairman and Margaret Scarborow as treasurer. This committee continued to raise funds and purchased lifebelts for beaches in Playa Flamenca and Torrevieja which were desperately needed at that time. Profits from organised lunches were donated to the Red Cross as they were raising funds to purchase an ambulance. HELP also provided first aid classes.
In 1988 Queen Elizabeth visited the Spanish Royal Family in
Madrid and among those she met were representatives of HELP Torrevieja. Current volunteers and committee members have also been recognised by the Queen with secretary, Richard Garland receiving an MBE in 2019 and President, Michele Masson receiving a BEM from the King in 2023.
With the support of volunteers and members, the organisation continued to grow. A garage was purchased in 1991 at Mar Azul to accommodate the growing amount of orthopaedic equipment.
In November 1993 the first HELP office was opened in Torrevieja. However, by 1996 HELP had purchased an office in Torrevieja and a second much larger office which remains the main headquarters of the charity today in San Miguel. Sadly, parking charges and the internet reduced the number of visitors to the Torrevieja office, and the decision was taken to close the office. Torrevieja office is still owned by the charity, but permission has been gained from members that the office may be sold.
In 2005 a Diabetic Support group commenced for the purpose of sharing experiences and information for those living with diabetes. This group continued for many years and although it no longer exists, the charity is fortunate that the leader of the group, Oscar, continues to offer support for anyone struggling with Diabetes on a one-to-one basis.
Support for people admitted to hospital was brought to the attention of the charity and as a result the first hospital visiting team began making regular visits to English speaking patients at the Vega Baja Hospital in 1996. The team extended their visiting programme when the new Torrevieja Hospital opened in 2007. Data protection regulations resulted in the hospital visiting teams being disbanded. However, hospital visitors are available if requested by a patient or member of their family by calling the San Miguel Centre of the charity.

Coming up to date we are an association that has been supporting people for over 4 decades. Today we not only have our office in San Miguel but the elective committee also travel around the area offering a drop in service to people who are unable to come along to San Miguel. We have a great following on social media and some 1500 people have taken the decision to become members. Memberships remain at just 10 euros per annum with an extensive list of additional benefits including an interpreting service and much more. It is important to remember that HELP Vega Baja offers support to everyone (both members and non-members) free of charge.
If you would like to find out more about the charity or perhaps you would like to volunteer, please contact Michele Masson (President) on 966 723 733 or email to president@helpvegabaja.com

Taurus: Warrior planet Mars enters into your sign mid month, and is testing you as finances are currently under scrutiny. Money comes and goes but you have to find a way to balance the books and control expenditure.
Gemini: Venus is squared with taskmaster Saturn, who questions your motives right now. Since you are rubbing shoulders with Venus you don’t have to have answers, only the very best of motives for what’s next.
Cancer: Venus enters on the 16th bringing harmony and creativity. This is a time for a new loving relationship, or a re-kindling of an existing partnership that seems to have gone stale. Open your heart and be sociable.
Leo: The Sun is using solar energy to support your new ventures with optimism and heralds new beginnings. This is a time to plan a long distance trip and get the ball rolling to see dreams become reality!
Virgo: It’s all about chasing goals and teamwork this month, as you finally get the green light on a project that is close to your heart right now. Jupiter is in your tenth house, a 12 year event, so luck and good fortune back you.
OUR OROSCOPE
Libra: Mars in the eighth house sees you take on both ambition and drive. You’ve started and you have also to finish, but with current joint ventures you seem to be being held back, for no apparent reason whatsoever.
Scorpio: Pluto teams with Pluto, Lord and ruler of the underworld. This eighth house event connects you to your innermost spirituality; and answers some questions that you have been afraid to ask. You need answers!
Sagittarius: The Full Moon shines a light on negotiations and sales and also spotlights an interview, which you have long awaited. Things have to get easier as complications and those things that hold you back are dealt with.
Capricorn: The fourth house of family and domesticity is in the forefront this month. Mercury spreads the word whilst Venus tunes into harmony to resolve a pointless family issue that’s becoming harder than ever to handle.
Aquarius: You have a challenge and you can’t resist it. There are two sides to every story, but your voice is yet to be heard. Assertive Mars backs you to the hilt and helps you fight your corner, but it shouldn’t be necessary.
Pisces: In transit from the seventh house undue stress comes from worries of a financial matter. Do your sums and you will see that someone isn’t pulling their weight, and for sure that someone isn’t you. Time to talk!

THE AIRCREW ASSOCIATION
COSTA BLANCA CELEBRATES A 70TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY!
On Wednesday, 24th April, Members of the Aircrew Association Costa Blanca were delighted to share in the 70th Wedding Anniversary Celebration of one of their Members, Gordon Blythe and his bride of so many years, Caroline, at the Casa Toni Restaurant in Moraira.
Gordon and Caroline met and fell in love in 1953 in Singapore. Gordon was serving in the Army there and Caroline was the daughter of Gordon’s Regimental Sergeant Major! Courting was, therefore ‘interesting’! They shortly became engaged and, the following year, they married at The Church of Christ The King on the 24th April. So began a marriage that took them to BAOR (Germany), Singapore twice and Northern Ireland. Having served in the Army for 43 years, Gordon and Caroline eventually retired and have lived in Altea for over 30 years.
Having heard a resume of their life together followed by a toast to the amazing couple from Max Maxwell, the Association Chairman, Members and other guests and friends of Gordon and Caroline enjoyed an amusing and emotional reply from Gordon. This was followed by very personal and much appreciated tribute from their Son, Gordon the younger, who had flown in from Germany for this special occasion to share the moment with his sister, Julie who also lives in Altea.
Prior to the lunch, Life Vice President Peter Langley said a highly appropriate grace and the excellent and very happy function was brought to a close with the Aircrew Toast proposed by the President, Tom Brown. The Aircrew Association wishes Gordon and Caroline many more happy, peaceful and healthy years together! The photograph top left shows Gordon and Carol demonstrating an understandable Public Display of Affection! Behind them are their son Gordon, their Daughter Julie and, over Gordon’s left shoulder, a very long standing friend, Eva!
