“Los jóvenes van a necesitar una sociedad mejor que la que les está quedando” Padre Ángel “Si veo tanta belleza a mi alrededor es porque los Fernández-Vega me han permitido verla”, asegura agradecido el Padre Ángel, paciente del Instituto desde hace muchos años. La suya es la historia de una vida dedicada a los demás. Cuenta que hasta su iglesia de San Antón se acercan cada día unas doscientas personas en busca de algo para desayunar o que el restaurante Robin Hood, que él mismo inauguró en noviembre para servir cenas a personas sin recursos, ha tenido tanto éxito que en sólo unos meses ya han abierto otros dos más en Madrid y Toledo.

“Young people are going to need a better society than the one we are leaving them” “If I am able to see so many beautiful things around me is because the Fernández‑Vega’s have enabled me to do so,” assures Father Ángel, who has been a patient of the Institute for a long time now. His is the story of a life devoted to others. He tells us how approximately two hundred individuals come every day to the church of San Antón searching for some breakfast, and that the restaurant Robin Hood, which he established in November to serve dinner to destitute individuals, has been so successful that in only a few months two more have opened in Madrid and Toledo.

solamente en las homilías, sino llegar a la práctica y ser trans‑ formadora; mejorar la sociedad. Porque los jóvenes de hoy van a necesitar una sociedad mejor que la que les va quedando, igual que los viejos sabemos que la so‑ ciedad de hoy es un privilegio si la comparamos con el hambre, la violencia ciega y las injusticias de otras épocas. Acaba de cumplir 80 años, ¿en qué momento de su vida se encuentra? Me considero en un momento de gozo. Miro atrás y todo lo ca‑ minado me hace sonreír, aunque eso no quita para que me guste pedirle todavía más retos al pre‑ sente y al futuro. Además, cele‑ brar mis 80 rodeado de amigos y proyectos ha sido un regalo precioso y, mientras los médicos no me asusten, pretendo seguir con la misma actividad que hasta ahora. ¿Cómo cree que le sienta a la Iglesia, como Institución, el paso del tiempo? ¿Está sabiendo adaptarse al siglo XXI? Desde la llegada de Francisco al Vaticano, la Iglesia que tenemos está más adaptada a los tiempos. Francisco denuncia las tragedias, escucha los deseos del pueblo y acompaña a los que sufren. Creo que este Papa nos ha influido y nos ha cambiado, aunque toda‑ vía amplias partes de la Iglesia tienen que abrirse y rejuvenecer. ¿Qué cree que podría hacer para estar más cerca de los jóvenes? Los jóvenes son más solidarios que los mayores y la Iglesia tiene que avanzar por ahí: no quedarse
¿Qué consejos piensa que serían útiles a los que luchan por salir de la marginalidad? Que no tengan miedo. Hasta ahora, se les han negado muchas oportunidades, pero también han tenido el apoyo desintere‑ sado de muchas personas. El miedo nunca es útil, porque nos paraliza. Tenemos que confiar en los que tienen la posibilidad de crear trabajo y en los que tam‑ bién desde el tercer sector trata‑ mos de dar dignidad a los mar‑ ginados. Aunque está claro que sólo somos una luz de apoyo, no la solución a los problemas socia‑ les de un país.
A finales del año pasado inauguró el primer restaurante Robin Hood, para servir cenas a los más desfavorecidos. ¿Cómo está funcionando? Desde entonces, ya damos ce‑ nas en otro restaurante Robin Hood también en Madrid, en la calle Nuncio, y en la estación de autobuses de Toledo. Las aper‑ turas han tenido buena acogida y las personas sintecho, cuando vienen, nos cuentan que se sien‑ ten cómodos y queridos, que es la principal intención. Por las mañanas, los Robin Hood abren en horario comercial al público, mientras que las cenas gratuitas son para los usuarios, derivados de San Antón o de los Servicios Sociales directamente. ¿Aumenta o disminuye el compromiso de la sociedad con los más desfavorecidos?

He has just turned 80, at what point of your life are you at? I believe I’m at a time of enjoyment. I look back and every memory makes me smile, although I still ask for more challenges for the present and for the future. Furthermore, being able to celebrate my 80th birthday surrounded by friends and projects has been a great present and, as long as the physicians don’t scare me, I intend to continue with the same activity as up to now. In your opinion, how does the passing of time affect the Church as an Institution? Does it adapting itself to the XXI century?

Como paciente, hace muchos años. Además, los Fernández-Ve‑ ga fueron unos de los primeros colaboradores de la Cruz de los Ángeles. Protegieron a los niños huérfanos de Mensajeros y eso lo agradeceré siempre. ¿Por qué confía en ellos para el cuidado de su vista? Porque son como apóstoles. Han sido una especie de misioneros de nuestra “Casa de la Paz”, el proyecto a través del que nuestra fundación trae a España a niños con enfermedades graves que no pueden tratarse en sus países de origen. Han atendido a nuestros niños de Benín, Perú… y hasta a los niños de la Guerra de Irak. Personalmente, si veo tanta be‑ lleza a mi alrededor es gracias a que ellos me han permitido verla. ¿Conoce la labor que desempeña la Fundación Fernández-Vega tanto dentro como fuera de Asturias? ¿Cómo la valora? Como digo, me parecen misione‑ ros, haciendo una labor valiente y profesional. Lo admiro mucho.

I was born during the Civil War and I still remember the vicissitudes we lived during the post-war era: hunger, cold, pain for all those loved ones that were killed or exiled… I then established Messengers of Peace and I now realise that there are still people around us having a hard time: abused women, homosexuals being discriminated, homeless people… There might be new discriminations, contemporary dramas, as is the case of the refugees, caused by current wars. Redundant workers. And more lonely elderly people than before.
Lets come closer to Asturias. You were born in Mieres. Do you miss your motherland?

My dog’s called Pelayo and everything that surrounds me is typical Asturian. Many nursing homes and residences belonging to Messengers of Peace have names such as Covadonga, and I know the “Santina” (Patron Saint of Asturias) protects me and helps me come back to Asturias frequently. Not long ago I received homage in my hometown, La Rebollada, and in my beloved Mieres; it’s one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life.
Why do you entrust them with the healthcare of your eyes?
Do you come often? How do you perceive us from far away? Yes, I take advantage of any excuse to come to the mining area of my youth. Spring has it beautiful.
Because they are like apostles. They have always been a type of missionaries of our “Casa de la Paz” (House of Peace), the project through which our organisation brings to Spain children with severe diseases that cannot be treated in their countries of origin.
