— Wedding Story — Lewis and Shelby P H OTO G R A P H E R MCKENZIE JESPERSEN mckenziejespersen.com
Lewis and Shelby met on the Dicken Road school bus, but according to their moms the couple met at Shelby’s baby shower! Lewis was just two years old, and the jury is out on first impressions. Eighteen years later, Lewis and Shelby began dating.
“We went to to Ghostrider hockey games, the Vogue Theatre, Yamagoya and of course, many bush drives up Hartley Lake road and throughout the South Country – true Fernie local style,” Shelby tells us. In 2018, Lewis and Shelby built their first home in Baynes Lake, a beautiful village just off Lake Koocanusa, where Lewis’ family has lived for generations. The following summer, on July 27, 2019 they decided to conquer the challenging and stunning Fisher Peak. Once they reached the rewarding apex, Lewis proposed and the answer was an enthusiastic, “YES!”
“I admit, I am your typical 20-somethingyear-old. I had Pinterest boards for every aspect of my future wedding. When Lewis proposed it was like we had the green light to our future. By September, I already had my dress and in December we had mailed out our wedding invitations. We were so excited that the wedding was finally coming together. We were going to have a smaller

wedding with 70 people for the ceremony and dinner that would take place on our property with another 50 attending the post-dinner reception. Almost everything was planned, then in March, the world came to a stop.”
COVID-19 has affected everyone in multiple ways. For Lewis and Shelby, it meant planning their wedding in a different way than they had originally hoped and expected. “We had reimagined our wedding two and three times over. In June, we came to a decision… something I had been dreaming about since I was ten years old. To host a smaller wedding at Island Lake Lodge.”
Once this choice was made, everything seemed to effortlessly fall into place. The date was moved to September 20, 2020 which is also Shelby’s grandparents’ wedding anniversary.
“We got lucky, as Island Lake changed the closing day of their summer season so we were able to have the entire property to ourselves. It was absolutely magical!”
A lover of weddings and planning, Shelby shares some specifics!
“I was always drawn to the navy, burgundy (Marsala) colour pallet. A mountain wedding was always a must for us, with small details of stars throughout, with this inspiration included in our wedding invitations. Zoe at No. 3 was my hair and makeup artist. She has such an amazing talent and I feel uplifted every time I leave her chair. Our florist was The Romantiks out of MJ’s Floral Boutique in Cranbrook.
And our photographer was McKenzie Jespersen. She is amazing! We had our engagement photo shoot back in May and when she sent us the finished images, I was speechless with how beautiful they were. Exactly what we needed to push us through some of the darkest months.”
Congratulations, Lewis and Shelby. We love how you shifted and made your day just as special while facing the challenges COVID-19 presented.
“The first time I got to see my beautiful wife in her dress at our first look. I’ve seen her dressed up before but never like that. Absolutely stunning! Another moment would be at the ceremony, being surrounded by the most important people in our lives, in such a beautiful location.”
For Shelby, it is all about the little moments she and Lewis got to share together. “A private moment in the trees, taking a breath and looking up at the mountains, and seeing a chipmunk during our ceremony.” Advice for couples planning their own wedding?
“If I had to give advice to the guys getting married it would be, ‘do whatever she asks of you,’ it will take some stress out of her life,” says Lewis. Choose three things that are most important to you. “Mine was the photographer, the venue and the flowers. Then those can be your main focus with all the other details not in the forefront of planning. And be open to different options and plans B, C and D,” Shelby says.

— Wedding Story — Todd and Jessica P H OTO G R A P H E R B O R N TO A DV E N T U R E borntoadventure.com
Todd Gamey moved to Fernie right after graduating high school, from ‘small town’ Manitoba. Jessica is originally from Calgary, AB and after high school attended university and then travelled. “I came to Fernie when I was 26 for one season, hoping to be near my family for a year before going back to school… and that was seven years ago,” she says. “Todd and I began dating after my first winter here in the early summer of 2014 and I pretty quickly knew I wasn’t going to be leaving anytime soon.” The two were married this summer, and also own a home in Fernie, have jobs they both love, two dogs and a cat… and a baby on the way! We think Jessica is right – they’re here to stay!
Jessica has worked in the wedding industry in Fernie for some time and once engaged, was set on having their wedding here. “It gave us a chance to involve so many amazing vendors that had become our friends over the years. We wanted to celebrate with the vendors as much as our guests!” she says.
“Obviously, things took a big turn this year as we had to cut our guest list from 80 to 11 and quickly re-plan our wedding. None of that would have been possible if it wasn’t for our army of amazing friends and vendors that took on the challenge of throwing our new wedding plans together in a matter of weeks.”
Jessica and Todd used Angela Magliocco of Silver Lining Events as their wedding planner. “She pulled off the most incredible organization and decor, even enlisting the help of the neighborhood kids to help create our 1920’s themed decorations. Ang went above and beyond to make sure there was zero stress on us on what was an obviously stressful situation.” Leanne Nanninga from Born to Adventure Photography encapsulated their day. “Leanne was so incredibly flexible and produced the most incredible photos and photo albums for us. She took the time to scope out all these amazing locations and was so patient.” With insider connections, ‘Local Legends’ Kevin McIssac and Lori Gadsden graciously offered their beautiful property for Jessica and Todd to set up the outdoor ceremony and
Q&A What is your favourite moment of your wedding day? How intimate it was. 2020 was a really tough year. We appreciated being there with those who could make it so much. We set up our tables in a square so everyone was facing each other and it felt like a big family dinner. Everyone at the wedding had a chance to make a speech and be in all the photos together. There was really no pressure on the day. A million little things went wrong but it never seemed to matter. What advice would you give other couples planning their own wedding?
reception. Patti’s Party Rentals provided the tent, “she always comes through! And Barrie Elliot from Fernie Catering Company came on last minute to do our full custom menu for the day and totally nailed it.” They used Sparrow for Hair to execute the 1920s look. “They pulled off the most incredible hair-dos on the day of the wedding without the chance for a trial first.”
Lynn Rogers was their commissioner, and provided a funny and personalized ceremony! And Jess’ custom ring was created by Jeweller Kelty Pelechytik. “Our other ‘vendors’ included the army of friends that helped out, Chelsea from the Green Petal did my flower arrangements, Andy Ward from the Fernie Distillers helped with our custom barrel-aged cocktails a year before the wedding, my bar manager Danielle from Cirque did my sister and my makeup when makeup artists weren’t allowed to practice!” Congratulations, Todd and Jessica. The collaboration with local vendors, friends and
family is truly inspiring and heart warming! We look forward to meeting the newest addition to the Gamey family.
Pick the things that are the most important to you and budget outwards from there. I have worked in the wedding industry for over 10 years and you can always tell which elements of the wedding the bride and groom included out of a feeling of necessity instead of importance. I have spent years seeing no one dance in front of an expensive DJ, party favours all left behind, fancy wedding cakes ignored. Your wedding doesn’t need to have it all! Todd and I have worked for years in the hospitality industry and I knew that we needed good food, booze and a wedding planner so I didn’t instinctively start working my own wedding. Meanwhile, my dress cost less than $500 and lots of the creative elements of the wedding, playlist, hair, makeup, etc., was completely left up to the creative control of those around me. 11

— Wedding Story — Troy and Kim P H OTO G R A P H E R K E L LY R E D I N G E R P H OTO G R A P H E R kellyredinger.com For over 20 years, Fernie has been Troy and Kim’s families’ winter and summer escapes, instilling a passion for the outdoors in them both.
As a kid, Kim and her family grew up skiing at Big White, Kelowna but in the 90s her parents and their friends decided they needed condos closer to Edmonton, which resulted in them closing in on Fernie and purchasing condos in Sparwood a short 20 minute drive to the resort. Troy, an avid snowmobiler, snowboarder and skier, spent a lot of time in Valemount and Jasper. Troy and Kim both had kids and were on the dating scene when they met on a boat at Jackfish Lake, Alberta. It was at this same time that Kim and her siblings were actively looking to buy a ski-inski-out on the hill at Fernie Alpine Resort, and offer their kids the same experience they had growing up skiing at Big White as a family. Troy and Kim spent the following three years dating with Fernie as their destination of choice all winter and summer, skiing and mountain biking with their three kids… who actually helped Troy propose to Kim on the very same boat they met on! They wanted to have the wedding right away, and with all of the amazing family trips and memories made in Fernie, it was the natural choice for their destination wedding.
Rusty Edge, with its spectacular views, great space, and everyone being able stay in the condo right there; the whole building became our village for the weekend, with kids running around from room to room to see their friends (and us, too!)” Kim says. Planning a wedding from afar has its challenges, so after hearing wonderful reviews, the couple immediately connected with a local wedding planner, Angela Magliocco of Silver Lining Events.
“Fernie holds such a special place in our hearts, even our rings were made by Matt at Element Jewelry. The perfect venue for us and our out of town guests was the Griz Inn and
“Angela was an amazing resource and handled every detail ensuring our event was planned perfectly and executed seamlessly. She also brought in her own team for catering, and the food was phenomenal, ending with a poutine bar for the midnight snack! The bridal party and family’s hair was done on site at the Griz by Sparrow Hair and their team of professionals who were able to take a few photos, with no trial run, and create a beautiful style. “We really can’t say enough about Angela; she thought of the perfect touches to make the day special for all the kids in attendance, including tablecloths of paper and crayons, light up balloons for the dance floor and tons of glow sticks, as well as a fun and creative photo booth using the Griz Inn vintage chairlift seat outside and 80s ski wear.

We really wanted our wedding to be comfortable, casual, and elegant. We were excited and proud to show off our home away from home, Fernie and the Griz Inn, to all our friends and family. We also wanted the event to be fun and joyous- as evidenced by the group shotski at the end of dinner! (with juice for the kids for course!).” The only element they kept close to home was their photographer, Troy’s best friend Kelly Redinger from Edmonton. Now that, we can understand. Congratulations, Troy and Kim!
Troy’s favourite moment of their wedding day was watching Kim walk down the aisle. For Kim, she can’t pick just one! “I guess if I had to pick, I really love the dance. All of the planning and formalities were over, and we could relax and celebrate with our friends and family. The dance floor was packed all night with kids, friends, balloons and glowsticks. It was a blast and a reflection of what makes me and Troy so happy- good times with great friends.” Advice for couples planning their own wedding?
“The best wedding for you is a reflection of you- every choice we made was in some part sharing an experience we had loved in Fernie in the past, from the guest gifts, to the venue, to the shotski moment, it created a unique event that our friends and family still rave about. I love that our wedding was held in the fall- the leaves in Fernie are spectacular, and hosting it on shoulder season helped our guests find great deals to plan their vacation.” 15
— Wedding Tips — Intimate Small Weddings for the Win BY ANGELA MAGLIOCCO
BORN TO ADVENTURE PHOTOGRAPHY
You can still make your day as special as you’d hoped, perhaps even more special, by keeping it small and intimate!
Downsizing a wedding because of budget, or because you’ve been forced to be innovative due to COVID-19, does not mean you need to skimp on details. This is your chance to create a more intimate and personalized experience.
Be creative and imaginative in choosing your own style of ceremony and reception. Hosting an intimate wedding is all about finding the right space. Think outside of the box for venues. How cool would it be to have your small wedding in the local brewery or
distillery? Imagine how amazing it would be in a greenhouse? With only a handful of guests you want your wedding venue to feel full. Seek out small, cozy environments versus large, spacious venues.
Cutting back on your guest list shouldn’t result in a less memorable experience – if wellplanned, it can end up making your big special day that much richer by being able to spend more time with those who you hold nearest and dearest. Having a more exclusive guest list can open entirely different possibilities, wedding ideas that might not otherwise be practical with a larger group. You could involve your guests more in the event, for
example at the ceremony ask them all to read a line from a script or have them encircle you as you exchange vows. At the reception you could have everyone at one long table. You can be more exclusive with your wedding party or decide that you don’t want to have one at all! It can also allow you to be strict about the plus ones. Committing to a smaller guest list eliminates the stress about deciding whether to invite people like your second cousin’s best friend. Now you can blame Covid-19 or the strict capacity that the venue has! It’s also much easier to have those who didn’t make the final cut or those with travel restrictions to virtually attend the ceremony on Zoom.
KELLY REDINGER PHOTOGRAPHER
Smaller weddings also foster a more relaxed, intimate experience and can substantially reduce stress for the wedding couple and their parents. At large weddings I find one of the big stresses is ensuring every single guest has had a chance to chat with the newlyweds and even their parents. At quaint, smaller weddings this stress is completely eliminated! Everyone will have more time to socialize and create lasting memories.
Sizing down might also mean you can size up! A decreased budget gives you room to upgrade on aspects of your wedding important to you. Find that unusual venue you’ve always wanted, create those elaborate/personalized invitations or menu, design a fancy wedding bar, make the décor extra-detailed, get creative with your seating arrangement, drop a bit

more on unique wedding favours, take the entertainment to the next level, or forget all of that and plan a more elaborate honeymoon with the money you’ll save!
For my wedding (back in the day), we baked fortune cookies and typed up personalized fortunes for each of our guests. It took a lot of time, but it was worth it! Having a small wedding allows you to leave a more personal touch that truly reflects you and your love. You’ll be able to create a relaxing and enjoyable environment for everyone.

— Wedding Tips — Please Don’t Stop the Music BY SAGE MCBRIDE
One of the hardest parts of planning a wedding is choosing the music. The song you walk down the aisle to, the first song that plays as you walk past all of the people you love most as a married couple, and the song you have your first dance to. Choosing those defining songs that matter to you as a couple is no easy task. Having been to many weddings, including my own, I have been brought to tears by the powerful lyrics and melodies of certain songs while a couple embraces for the first time in the next chapter of their life. I have also grooved along with couples as they have hit the dance floor running at their reception and got the party started with that first song. Whatever song you choose to walk down the aisle to, sway to, or start the dance party to, you’ll remember it forever. Here are a few great ones to choose from to make the most incredible day of your life even more spectacular. “August”- Sam Weber “Mushaboom” - Feist
“Home” - Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
“I Will Follow You Into the Dark” - Deathcab for Cutie “You and I” - Wilco
“My Girl” - Yukon Blonde
MCKENZIE JESPERSEN PHOTOGRAPHY
“Signed, Sealed Delivered” - Stevie Wonder “I Got You Babe” - Bahamas
“Shut Up and Dance” – Walk the Moon “You+Me” - You and Me
“Crazy in Love” - Beyonce and Jay Z
“You Make Me Wanna Shout” - Isley Brothers “Coming Home” - Leon Bridges
When Tim and I got married, we had an open mic night the night before our wedding, where we played a tune together to open up the night. Each song had a special meaning to us, except maybe “Jump.” We just wanted an epic synth line party tune to play after we said “I do” because we’re dramatic like that. Here’s our list!
“First Day of My Life” - Bright Eyes
Open Mic Night Song: “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” - Death Cab for Cutie
“Harvest Moon” - Neil Young
Just Married Song: “Jump” - Van Halen
“Emmy Lou” - First Aid Kit
“Such Great Heights” - Postal Service “Young Folks” - Peter Bjorn and John
“I Wanna Hold Your Hand” - The Beatles “I Got You Babe” - Sonny & Cher
Aisle Song: “August” - Sam Weber
First Dance Song: “Emmy Lou” - First Aid Kit

— Wedding Tips — Flowers For Everyone B Y K A T LY N C O R A K
Getting married in the Rocky Mountains is incredibly special, from the views, to quaint venues, to amazing local talent in photographers, wedding planners, stylists and of course florals, Fernie has it all.
While planning a wedding can at times be overwhelming, local vendors are here to make it as smooth as possible including your florals and styling. Before your initial consultation, I suggest you spend time as a couple looking at inspiration photos to get an idea of what you like, and also what you don’t like. Once meeting with your Wedding Specialists, they will help to solidify style, colours, seasonal availability of specific flowers and budget for your wedding. Most often, custom quotes are available for each and every couple, to ensure you have the unique and special look you anticipated, and that no two weddings will ever look the same. From elopements to larger weddings, there are options for every idea, style and budget.
Designing wedding florals in a mountain town is always incredibly inspiring, as florists create the pieces you’ve envisioned to compliment the surrounding views of mountains, forests, rivers, fields of wildflowers, or snow-covered peaks. The team at The Green Petal is in love with the different, the unusual, the fun, the artsy, and
