I am currently the Visitor Information Manager at the Info Centre here in Fernie. I’m proud to say that I’ve worked in hospitality and tourism my entire life. It all started 12 years ago when I went to Humber College in Toronto and received my diploma of Tourism Management in Industry Services. To be honest, the only reason I chose this college was because I had never travelled and I had the opportunity to finish my last semester in France. SOLD!
I immediately caught what people call the ‘travel bug.’ From there, I went to start my hospitality career with the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, The Fairmont Banff Springs and then the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. I absolutely loved helping excited travellers plan their trip, provide local knowledge and getting to know people from all over the world. After being inspired by so many travelling stories from guests, I decided it was my turn for new experiences. I booked a one way ticket to South America where I travelled for nine months and ended up guiding hikes in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. I then jumped over to Serbia for a few years where I worked for an online destination wedding company. Finally, my sister called me and said I better be coming to her wedding in Fernie, and once I got here, I never left!
Working in tourism has obviously changed since the pandemic, but even prior, I noticed more and more tourism jobs were moving online. When I worked for the online destination wedding company, for example, I quickly realized it wasn’t for me as I missed chatting with colleagues and creating connections with guests, and I think travellers prefer in-person as well. My hopes for the future of tourism (after the pandemic) is that we embrace and not take for granted those face to face interactions, connections and relationships we make, because in my opinion it’s the most exciting part of travelling and working in tourism.
