Local's Perspective

Greg Barrow

Edge of the World

My journey to Fernie actually began in Banner Elk, North Carolina where in 1981 I opened a white water rafting business. Banner Elk is a ski resort town of 4000. That spring I attended the outdoor show in Las Vegas and in the parking lot of the convention centre were Jake Burton, Tom Sims, Chuck Barfoot and a few others trying to sell snowboards. They weren't allowed inside. I loved what they were doing and thought the boards were the coolest things I had ever seen so I ordered some. So now I'm a snowboard shop as well as rafting. Fast forward to 1999 and talking to Craig Kelly and Jason Ford in Vegas at another trade show they convinced me that I should move to Fernie and open a shop there. So, I visited that spring, fell in love with the hill and the town and moved there that fall and opened Edge of the World - Fernie.

Fernie's shopping scene has grown quite a bit since I've been here, mostly in the summer. Fishing, mountain biking, and just tourism in general is on the uptick for sure. 2nd Ave has developed into a great shopping corridor as all of the stores continue to improve and diversify. Fernie is a wonderful town with great people and a laid back, very friendly attitude. Everyone wants to be here and so they are happy. I'm happy to see Fernie continue at the pace it is. Working in Fernie in the outdoor industry is super fun because you are helping people have fun! Very rewarding!
