Small is

One of the trends sweeping the world of housing and real estate is the move to smaller housing options. For many the idea of a massive house with a grand entrance, bedrooms the size of a small arena and bathrooms that fit 10 are not only costly but wasteful (not to mention a pain to clean!). More people want a more simple house and the freedom to do other things with their time, like travel or be outside, rather than constantly maintain a home. Although this idea has been around as long as dirt, it was in the 90’s that it first started to become something of a trend with the publishing of The Not So Big House by Susan Susanka, a well known architect. The premise was build smarter not bigger, with things like extra windows, ceiling heights, sightlines and storage solutions incorporated into the design to make a house live larger than it’s square footage. The increased appeal of a more modern aesthetic combined with growth in the ideals of the environment and sustainability has only fueled this trend. Fernie is no different and with a narrow valley, outdoor lifestyle and 14

environmentally sensitive population seems to be a natural fit for this movement. If you look around town there has been a number of new homes built that feature a smaller footprint with larger windows, more modern design and ample storage for all the gear that a place like Fernie demands. As an example, Montane has placed smaller design as a stated goal with higher quality but smaller homes in a modern rustic style as a preferred option and will be introducing The Cottages that further this ideal with 2 bdrm homes at 1200 sq.ft. Many original small homes are being renovated, maintaining the originality of Fernie and continuing it’s traditions. Who knows what innovations are on the horizon? If you told people 10 years ago that tiny houses of 500 sq. ft or less would become popular or that homes made out of used shipping containers would pop up everywhere you might have been called crazy. Increased technology, environmental sensibilities and the desire for simplicity in an ever more complex world will mean continued evolution in the places we call home.
