NIKOLE MIGL INTERVIEW / DAINA RENTON

WE TALK TO MAKEUP ARTIST NIKOLE MIGL TO FIND OUT HOW SHE STARTED OUT, WHAT HER ULTIMATE GOAL IS, HER TOP TIPS AND MORE What is Beauty? Beauty for me is individuality, it’s art. There are so many people in this world that are beautiful in their own unique way, through a combination of features, style and overall aura. In your own words, what do you do as a makeup artist? I’d like to think that was a makeup artist I do “art”. Whether it be enhancing someone’s natural beauty by looking at their individual features or being part of a team to turn a vision into reality and completely transform somebody. What have been the highlights of your career so far? The highlights of my career so far have been to work at events like “The Scottish Style Awards” , “Breast Cancer Care”, “Scotland Redesigned” and “The Scottish Wedding Show”. It was great to see how events work backstage, the fastpaced environment is really fun and at the end of the day you feel truly proud of yourself! Another highlight has been meeting like-minded creatives. I truly feel blessed for working among photographers, hair stylists, designers, stylists, models etc. It’s always been great to observe others showcasing their skills and the end results being amazing.

which has helped me to get an insight of the industry. I also started by test shooting as much as possible and networking. What’s the hardest part about your job? The hardest part of the job is to overcome perfectionism, the mental pressure of trying to translate the photographer’s/creative director’s a client’s , or my own vision as best as possible. I do love the challenge though. Is there anything you dislike about makeup? To be honest there’s nothing to dislike about makeup, it’s one of those things where I just couldn’t say something about it. Maybe the only bad things about makeup is that there are sooo many products out there and I can’t have it all! Who do you think in this world does not need makeup at all, if anyone? Nobody truly “needs” makeup. Makeup is a tool, not a necessity.

What’s the ultimate goal? I don’t have an ultimate goal set so far, as I am enjoying the journey too much. I will see where it takes me.

What’s your signature when it comes to makeup looks? My signature is very clean, fresh skin with focus on either eyes or lips. It always varies, but the skin always remains the same.

How did you get started in the industry? I started by training at the Academy of Makeup in Glasgow, Scotland. The academy was founded by Sarah Hill, and the tutors were makeup artists already working in the industry successfully for over a decade. Through the academy I had a few job opportunities to attend events

What’s your number 1 beauty tip? The best tip I could give anybody is to work around your features, not trends! As mentioned before, everybody has their own unique facial features, so work with them! It seems like there is a certain “face” that people are trying to paint on themselves. Continued...

- beautiful than enhancing your own features and wearing your own “look”. Be your own icon! I am talking from personal experience as well, like any other girl, I always tried to follow makeup trends such as heavy contouring, bold eyebrows, all these different techniques for eyeshadow etc. Whenever I tried to follow these trends I would end up looking weird, that was because whenever I’d watch tutorials the person applying the makeup had completely different facial features. So trying to apply the same technique onto my face never gave the same result. If you already have killer cheekbones, no need for heavy contouring! If you already have thick eyebrows, why paint on something you already have? Look at your own face and work around it, it’s great! It really helps to discover your own unique attributes and to love yourself

BE

YOURSELF

photographer: Anna Gorodnitskaya @yuki.madness model: Julia Tkachenko @julia_melman make-up artist: Ekaterina Luzina @aaskeza “Should a person follow the rule "be yourself"? This question I asked myself nearly most of my life. It was difficult for me to admit my body. I could not go out in the open things, and when I tried, I could not. I remember how I wanted to go out in my shirt, unbuttoning a couple of buttons, so that my neck could be seen. But as soon as I was in a crowded place, a kind of "panic attack" started and I fastened it. A year ago I would not have a thought about the fact that I could easily upload photos where I would see what I hated all my life. But all my life to hide behind a screen of fear, restraint and complexes - this is not what I wanted. And, I'm sure that's not what you want.”

SHE HAS RECENTLY HAD WORK PRINTED IN HARPERS BAZAR ARABIA. ABOUT THE SHOOT WHEN DOING THIS MAKE UP, THE STATEMENT WAS ALL IN THE MAKE UP THAT I DIDN’T USE, THE BEAUTY BEING IN THE SIMPLICITY AND DRAWING ATTENTION TO ONE FEATURE AT A TIME. I WANTED THE MODEL TO BE COMPLETELY NATURAL, WITH THE PAINT MOVING FOR EACH SHOT. PHOTOGRAPHY WISE, WE WANTED TO KEEP THE LIGHTING IN LINE WITH THE NATURAL FEEL OF THE MAKEUP AND RETAIN THE SIMPLICITY AND SOFTNESS, KEEPING EVERYTHING TONAL WITH THE MODELS NATURAL SKIN COLOUR AND HAIR. WE USED A BACKDROP AND A SIMPLE TOP TO COMPLIMENT THIS TOO.
