THE LOCKDOWN ISSUE

THE LOCKDOWN ISSUE

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR, When I decided to open up the casting call for this issue, I was interested in seeing how the artists that we publish were going to think outside the box to create the eye catching fashion photography and fine art that we usually publish. I wanted to see what artists could do when confined to one space. I asked the submitters to this issue how they had been coping with quarantine during this time. The Lockdown Issue has faced some delays as I had to take some time out to rest, but I decided that one of the main questions I wanted answered with this issue was ‘How have artists been coping?’. The fashion industry is particularly unforgiving in that if you are not staying relevant, you don’t feel relevant. So how are photographers continuing to express their visions with no team members or desirable circumstances to create? All of the work in this issue was edited during lockdown or it was shot while observing lockdown rules. These rules and the duration of lockdown have been different in every country, and as we are a global publication, this issue provides commentary on artists everywhere. I’m not going to give you some fluffy bullshit about how this is ‘unprecedented’, ‘trying’ or ‘challenging’ times. I’m not going to pretend this magazine can save the world. The only thing I do know for sure, is that to create is to survive for some of us. I’d like to dedicate this issue to every artist who sacrificed their art, their mental health, their feeling of purpose, so they could do their part in slowing down the spread of COVID-19. When the world wakes up, Feroce will still be here, ready to show your art to the world. And in case you’d forgotten, #BlackLivesMatter. Daina Renton

MOVING GHOSTS Photographer: @melting_giraffe Model: @melting_giraffe

Jacob Buchanan is a photographer & multi-media artist operating under the pseudonym Melting Giraffe. He often deals in themes of dissociation, identity, and the suggestion of narrative. “/ / MOVING | | GHOSTS / / is an ongoing project that I started at the beginning of 2019 where I am collaborating with people to create portraits of them in locations important to them while wearing their favorite outfit. I ask people to wear their favorite outfit is because clothes show where that person is at that period of their life, how they feel & have been feeling. The clothes express who they want to be and in turn, give them confidence. I am interested in sharing who people are and the connection that comes with that. The catch is that they have to hide their face. I ask that people cover their face because it kills the model / identity but allows for other parts of who they are to come out in the image. Important locations come from the idea of boudoir. Boudoir comes from the french word bouder meaning: to sulk. Historically, sulking was seen as something one would do privately, and the term bouder came to encapsulate a room where one would go to withdraw and be quietly alone. A bouder was a place of intimacy and privacy, where one could express their true selves without fear of judgment or punishment. Self-portraits during the COVID-19 lockdown.

“For some of these shots we used a TEAM VIEWER on a laptop with a distance camera control program. We want to show that in our modern world there are no limits or borders: we collaborated with a stylist from Phuket and our make up artist was at home in Rome and she explained to the model (who is also staying home) how and which colors to use for makeup. We also used the ZOOM platform to see what our model can do and her poses, so that we could collaborate from a direct line. The model wasn’t just wearing classical clothes but also a plaid skirt. She has already been staying home for more than one month, so she has gone a little crazy. She had read many books, watched many films and TV - shows trying to stay active during this lockdown.”

“It was Monday afternoon, my mother and my younger brother were sitting idly and cribbing about how everyday seems like a Sunday now and how they want to meet their friends and just get out so that they can do something. Me, coming from a fashion college who is interested in styling and creative art from the very start saw dad’s beige pants hanging on the door hook. I got some random ideas, put them together and looked around my house for a fun place where I could lay down my thoughts in a creative frame. Saw the leaves which had fallen down in my lawn and wanted to capture something including them. The last thing I was scared about was “how will I get my brother to be my muse?” but I never knew that this lockdown period would make him more comfortable in front of the camera and my mother got involvedwho just loved giving so many ideas. It was so much fun to do this at home with my own family members. This will be a memory to cherish forever for all of us.”

“These photos were taken one day before the lockdown, when the virus was in the news, I had a photography gig right before the lockdown. I was pretty on edge being in Las Vegas before/ during the pandemic. Friends around me in America were not taking the virus that seriously... and thought it was a lie. During lockdown I have been able to reflect a lot about myself and I have had a lot of time to work on creative projects alone and remotely with few people.

“I live in Washington State in the USA, the first state to get the virus. Both my sister and myself (the model) are immune compromised so we went into quarantine in early March. Over our state’s lockdown my sister had her 21st birthday. She wasn’t allowed to have any of her friends over so I decided to take photos of her in our front yard top resemble her solo “pity party” . These images are the outcome of that shoot.”

“I am Alessia Spotorno, I am 19 years old and I live in Italy. During the lockdown, I got to deal with myself. I let myself be carried away by time, which although it seemed to flow slowly, flowed constantly, and the days followed one after the other. The only way to escape from the walls of my home that never seemed close to me in that way, was to take refuge in my corners, in my passions, in my memories, in my family... I will always remember it.

“Being in a country that has just turned into the place where there are the most cases of COVID-19 is frightening. Respecting the lockdown has been a big obstacle for people here, most of all because of the President, who seems to not care at all about the Brazilian people. It’s frustrating, but I keep staying at home, and fighting - in any way that I can - for this government to fall.”

“With the beginning of lockdown, I realized that I finally had a vacation that I had not had for a very long time. That I don’t need to constantly run somewhere and do something, I can plunge into myself and think about what I really want, which way I’m moving. Lockdown gave me a serious impetus as an artist and creator. I began to do bolder work without looking at “people don’t understand,” because hell, we all sit at home and when, if not now, do something really bold and see what comes of it? The longer we sit locked up with our thoughts, the more bizarre images our consciousness draws for us. Our task is only to transfer this into reality, give our thoughts a real, safe embodiment, live them and find a resource for ourselves in this.”

“It was difficult to take photos at home without special equipment. I used the available tools, like fluorescent lights and colored bags (it was very funny). During the lockdown, I discovered many interesting locations in my apartment! You can create in any environment. And the more restrictions you have, the more you want to do something new.

“The lockdown situation itself inspired me for this shoot. Honestly, the whole thing felt quite threatening - the silent fear was sneaking somewhere behind in my head that artists would become obsolete. In times of economic collapse of such scale - I got scared that no one would care about such “bohemian” things as art and the world would revolve around basic goods and trades. Luckily, I was proven wrong when the artists community reminded me that an artist mission in a crisis scenario is to light the way and bring people hope and strength to strive and make change for good. To be a part of this change. This series of pictures shows how it felt to be cut off for some time because of global pandemia, but despite that gained hope and power in the end.”

“When we started this project this February we were working on this idea of one being tied to things. More importantly to your current place and to your partner. As artists we have both been through a lot in our personal lives and we felt the need to express this state of confinement out into the world. In doing so the state of the world was about to be tested by this same very idea. We had no idea we would be this far into being confined into our very own spaces. What started out as a metaphor for our own personal lives has become a reality for the world.

“We shot this photoshoot right before the self isolation started in Australia. I didn't have any particular idea in my head at first but the more I was looking at my models, their outfits and makeup while shooting the more I was realizing that if my inner demons would have a human form that they would look exactly like this. Beautiful, edgy, dark and wild. Even the location at Pinnacles Desert kind of embodies my mind where the pillars are my thoughts and beliefs, and these demons run around happily, they dance between them and they are celebrating when they overtake me.

REMOTENESS

Photographer: Luca Bonfigli Makeup Artist: sonia maccapani Male Model: Eugene Fisher Now a days is the kind of world that we newer expect to understand Communication keep us close virtually and there are no social distance, virtually‌ What about Remoteness from the real world , the world you touch we are always hyperactive, in the real world, just too busy to look up and then, now ,we just realize that we can’t look up, we still try to figure out the better place to be, to feel good in this remoteness from the outside world. Then suddenly, we try to keep our lives as normal as possible in this new reality. Then, we try to keep our routine, put some clothes on, change them to feel more comfortable, trying even to change the space around us to skip the reality. Keep thinking about the future, about the past. What is next? What is the plan for tomorrow?

“The lockdown has hit many of us in the art community hard, in the U.S many people choose to stay in and create from their homes which I admire. I myself took the time to create as safely as possible working exclusively with two models throughout the quarantine. I am a photographer first and an urban explorer second. My model Amber, featured in this issue, is also an urban explorer so many of our locations (this one included) have been abandoned and forgotten for years. The chances of coming into contact with others is slim to none so we took advantage of the open highways and quiet afternoons to find beautiful places. To be able to keep creating throughout the lockdown has been challenging but also resulted in some of my best work yet. I have found inspiration in these new quiet times.

“During the lockdown, our lives have changed in unimaginable ways, as have our concepts of time and space. Time passes in a blur, the days blend into one another, and the anticipation that once separated our weekdays from weekends has become virtually non- existent. It is more important than ever that we hold on to the most important aspect of our identities: our creativity. That creativity is what gives us that precious glimmer of hope, that hint of normalcy, and that glimpse of passion that so many of us took for granted but will never do so again in a post-lockdown world. This editorial series, shot through Zoom, represents our team’s Blur of Creativity during California’s lockdown.”

But I know that nothing lasts forever, and we can keep doing magic if we find a way to make the thing we love. “Self-isolation and social distancing may have imposed restrictions on our daily lives but we often forget that art tends to exist and thrive regardless. The need to create interesting and inspiring imagery never really goes away for me. I and the team found ways to incorporate things that we use at home to create a story that could be relevant to a time of crisis like we are in. The lockdown has been lifted in India, however, we still observe high safety precautions while moving around in public spaces. It is, after all, a pandemic situation but a creative mind knows no limits.
