Bill Appleton - Biography Bill Appleton entered the Printing Industry in 1956 at the age of 15, when he commenced a six year Machine Printing Apprenticeship with C. & T. Harris (Calne) Ltd. As a Journeyman printer he joined the Alden & Mowbray Press and later the Nuffield Press, Oxford, working as a Lithographic printer on book and magazine production and hi-end colour printing. At 30 he enrolled at Garnett College, part of the University of London and gained a Technical Teachers Teaching Certificate. For the next 26 years he taught Machine Printing Processes at the School of Printing & Publishing, Gloscat, Gloucester. In 1990 he spearheaded the initial UK work, in conjunction with the UK DSPA, into the first ISO Standard for ‘Screen Printed Process Colour’ and ‘Screen Process Ink Standards’. In 1994 this led to a three-year research project into ‘The Basic Fundamentals of Screen Printing’ with Swansea University ‘W.C.P.C’ and funded by the British Government ‘E.P.S.R.C’. On moving from teaching he joined the R. & T. Research Department at Mac Dermid Autotype, Wantage and worked on stencil research and development. Here he reported directly to the International Technical Director, Professor Steve Abbott. Bill retired in 2006 and is now involved with the FESPA Seminar Team who deliver technical seminars into member countries. He holds ‘City & Guilds of London’ and ‘Full Technological Certificates’ in the major printing processes and is an A1 NVQ Assessor. As required, he is a member of the ISO TC 130 Working Group for Graphic Arts Standards. The UK DSPA has honoured him with awards for Achievement, Innovation and Service to the U.K. Screen Printing industry.
