Also in this diverse programme, Alston’s latest piece Rejoice in the Lamb is made to Britten’s superb setting of Christopher Smart poetry, while Alston’s Hölderlin Fragments is danced to Britten’s musical arrangement of Friedrich Hölderlin’s enigmatic lyrics. In his classic Overdrive, Alston takes up the pulsating rhythm of Terry Riley’s music and runs with it to the wire.

Fri 7pm | Sat 2pm

The language of Arthur Miller and Dylan Thomas come together in a powerful study of words in motion. From American choreographer Helen Pickett comes the world premiere of The Crucible, based on Miller’s 1953 Tony Award-winning play. Then, set to a recording of Dylan Thomas poems read by Richard Burton, Christopher Bruce’s Ten Poems builds on the melodic rhythm of the famous prose, bringing each one to life with exquisite vignettes of story and character.

A new take on the classic fairytale, balletLORENT’s Rapunzel is filled with dark beauty. Experience the tale of the parents forced to give up their child; the Witch who takes her from them; the woman the child becomes; and the Prince who discovers and rescues her; from a whole new perspective. Rapunzel brings together a collection of worldclass collaborators, including Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, Doctor Who composer Murray Gold, and Michele Clapton, award-winning costume designer for Game of Thrones. ......................................................................................................... Adapted for the stage by Nicholas Wright

Tue 30 September to Sat 4 October 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm Marking the Centenary of the First World War, this new dramatisation of Pat Barker’s Booker- nominated novel is adapted by Olivier award-winning playwright Nicholas Wright (His Dark Materials, Vincent in Brixton) and directed by award-winning Simon Godwin. Following Sassoon’s public declaration against the war, he was sent to Craiglockhart Hospital to recover from a ‘nervous breakdown’. There, he meets fellow patient, Wilfred Owen. Sassoon is treated by noted psychiatrist Dr Captain William Rivers, in charge of the rehabilitation of shell-shocked patients. In his relationship both with Sassoon and with other officers in his care, Rivers confronts the effects of war and of man’s battle to honour both his conscience and duty to his fellow man. RSC and NT leading actor Stephen Boxer plays Rivers and is joined by some of the country’s brightest young actors taking on the roles of Sassoon, Owen and Robert Graves.

With an on-stage presence like no other, his exuberance, spontaneity and cerebral style have established him as one of Britain’s bestloved comedians. The master surrealist uses an infinite imagination and plenty of tomfoolery, which are sure to have audiences in fits of laughter.

In this tender new work a series of encounters exploring the remnants of lives and the dust of a shared history are explored. Against an uncompromising sound and lighting backdrop, the dancers shift through suspended moments in time, between reality and memory, both present and absent.

“ The wizard-haired Geordie remains in full possession of his nimble-witted, slacker-minded improv skills. One of comedy’s greatest marvels”

“ Mesmerising and unsettling… lulls and allures in equal measure”

She dreams of the seductive yet distant world of books and learning, but when war breaks out, Chris suddenly finds herself facing a very different reality as a widowed, single mother in a land altered beyond recognition. Set in a farming community in the North East of Scotland, Sunset Song charts Chris’s struggle to adapt to her new world and hold together her fragile family. Her survival depends solely on her belief that beyond the sunset lies hope. Marking a hundred years since the start of the First World War, Sell a Door Theatre Company and Beacon Arts Centre revives Alastair Cording’s faithful adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s classic story, recently voted Scotland’s most popular novel of all time.

Tue 21 to Sat 25 October 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm It’s the not-so-swinging sixties in a Dunoon naval base. Three sisters, Olive, Maddy, and Renee have spent the last eleven years looking longingly across the Clyde Estuary. Surrounded by military suitors, overbearing in-laws, and worthy Presbyterians, they yearn for London’s Carnaby Street and the love, culture and thrills they are denied in Argyllshire. Will they ever escape? Following his acclaimed adaptations of The Cherry Orchard and Uncle Vanya (Uncle Varick), John Byrne (Tutti Frutti, The Slab Boys) turns his attention to Chekhov’s tragi-comedy about dashed hopes and unrequited love, in this brand new production from Tron Theatre Company. With a ten-strong cast, the three female leads, Jessica Hardwick, Muireann Kelly and Sally Reid will be joined by, amongst others Sylvester McCoy and Jonathan Watson.

Mon 27 October to Sat 1 November 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm A classic. A landmark. A legend. Following a sell-out run in 2012, The Mousetrap is back. The longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre - with over 25,000 performances - The Mousetrap is a play to be proud of. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner. The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed.

Brazil’s internationally acclaimed dance company make a welcome return to Edinburgh following sell-out performances in the 2010 Edinburgh International Festival. Grupo Corpo combines the precision of classical ballet with the sensuality and passion of Latin dance rhythms. The 22 dancers fill the stage with elegant, virtuosic and joyful dance which has audiences in raptures. The Company will perform two pieces, choreographed by artistic director Rodrigo Pederneiras. Parabelo features moments of utter peace and stillness and others of raucous Brazilian carnival. Sem Mim takes its inspiration from a Portugese song cycle and focuses on a group of women who lament the departure of their lovers. Dressed in intricately patterned and colourful bodysuits, the dancers move as waves; the ebb and flow of their bodies mimicking the calm and fury of the sea.

Cinderella NEW PRODUCTION

Thu 13, Sun 16, Wed 19, Sat 22 November 2014 Evening 7.15pm | Matinee Sun 4pm Cinderella is the ultimate rags to riches tale. Featuring a host of colourful characters, this new production is a highly entertaining take on one of Rossini’s most popular comedies. With music that’s bright, breathless and full of energy, it’s a Cinderella story… but not quite as you may know it. Rossini’s sparkling score demands impressive vocal agility and the best in comedy characterisation. Russian mezzo-soprano Victoria Yarovaya, winner of the 2013 Mercedes Viñas Prize, is Cenerentola, and rising Rossini star Nico Darmanin is Prince Ramiro. The talented ensemble cast also features baritone Richard Burkhard (The Magic Flute 2012), soprano Rebecca Bottone (The Pirates of Penzance 2013) and renowned bass Graeme Danby. the iconic dance to music of the Rolling Stones

Thu 27 to Sat 29 November 2014 Evening 7.30pm The rock’n’roll swagger of the Rolling Stones is brought thrillingly to life in Rooster, Christopher Bruce’s electrifying celebration of the swinging sixties. Sharp-suited, snake-hipped men and strong, sassy women perform virtuoso courtship dances to some of the Stones’ most famous tunes, including Not Fade Away, Paint It Black, Sympathy for the Devil and, naturally, Little Red Rooster. Rambert is a world-class dance company, and Rooster is one of its all-time best-loved works, presented in Edinburgh for the first time in 13 years. Rooster tops the bill in a mixed programme also featuring The Castaways by Barak Marshall, a terrific piece of dance theatre combining dark humour and inventive movement to infectious world music, and a new work by pioneering choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh.

Eccentric toymaker Dr Coppélius wants to know, and he’s planning to bring his mechanical doll, Coppélia, to life – he just needs the right spell. When Dr Coppélius leaves Coppélia on his workshop balcony she’s soon causing quite a stir in the village. Particularly in the heart of red-blooded young lover Franz, and the jealous mind of his real-life fiancée, Swanilda – who’s mistaken the mannequin for a crying, talking, sleeping, walking rival. With a wild mix of abracadabra, and some mischievous maidens, comic chaos is riotously unleashed when humans and automatons collide in Dr Coppélius’s spooky toyshop. Sir Peter Wright’s enchanting production of this joyous and witty ballet is an ever popular celebration of love, with a sparkling score and breath taking choreography. A jury has murder on their minds and a life in their hands as they decide the fate of a young delinquent accused of killing his father. But what appears to be an open and shut case soon becomes a huge dilemma as prejudices and preconceived ideas about the accused, the trial and each other turn the tables every which way, until the nail-biting climax...

UK Première Thu 26 to Sat 28 February 2015 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinee Sat 2.30pm Northern Ballet brings the UK Première of Jean-Christophe Maillot’s, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo production of Romeo & Juliet to Festival Theatre Edinburgh in 2015. Set to Prokofiev’s unforgettable score, played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia, Romeo & Juliet is choreographed by acclaimed dance-maker Jean-Christophe Maillot, who has been invited by the Bolshoi Ballet to create a new version of The Taming of the Shrew in July 2014. His beautiful interpretation captures the essence of what it means to be young and in love, and tells of the devastating tragedy that unfolds when tenderness and naivety is met with violence and pride. Northern Ballet ‘boasts the best dance-actors in the world’ (Dance Europe) and is the perfect Company to bring a new passion to this famous story. Be amongst the first in the UK to experience this very special ballet.

In the technicolour confines of the slab room of A. F. Stobo & Co. Carpet Factory in Paisley, young boys have to grow up fast. Strutting adolescent double act Phil and Spanky are passing the time with an endless verbal tug o’ war and merciless ribbing of their workmates and boss. But even the distractions of the annual staff dance, the monthly pay packet or the unattainable Lucille can’t stop Phil from dreaming of becoming an artist. One of the best-loved works in 20th century Scottish theatre, John Byrne’s funny and poignant play paints a vivid picture of the tough, rebellious, working-class culture of 1950s industrial Scotland. David Hayman directs this landmark theatre show for the stage in a major new production by the Citizens Theatre.

As refreshing and thrilling as the day it was written, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s OKLAHOMA! is the original feel-good musical. From the minute the rugged cowboy Curly steps on to the stage singing Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’ we know that all will be right with the world. This colourful production overflows with well-known songs such as I’m Just a Girl Who Cain’t Say No, Surrey With a Fringe on Top, Kansas City, People Will Say We’re in Love and, of course, the rousing title song itself! Celebrating the vigour of America’s pioneering spirit with classic tunes and boot-stomping dances, we follow Curly and the girl of his dreams, Laurey, as they travel down love’s highway on an extremely bumpy surrey ride. From the award-winning producers of The King & I and Fiddler on the Roof this brand new production, directed by Rachel Kavanaugh features a cast of 20 and live orchestra, brings its audience romance, excitement and a score filled with sunshine.

“ Glamorous, Sexy, Funny and Dangerous. A Triumph!” Evening Standard

“ Mesmerising. Electrifying, a dynamite dance of desire” Daily Mail

Tue 9 to Sat 13 June 2015

Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Thu & Sat 2.30pm Fasten your seat belts…The Car Man is back! Matthew Bourne’s internationally acclaimed dance thriller was first seen in 2000, winning the Evening Standard Award for Musical Event of the Year. The Car Man is loosely based on Bizet’s popular opera and has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in New Adventures’ repertory, brilliantly arranged by Terry Davies. The familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960’s America where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. Hot on the heels of Swan Lake, Matthew Bourne is back.
