Welcome
Christmas has to be my favourite time of year for theatre, and we’ve been enjoying Scottish Ballet’s sparkling Snow Queen, soon to be followed by our very own pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This year’s panto is bigger and better than ever on the majestic Festival Theatre stage and the fun keeps flowing all the way through January so book yourself a New Year’s treat. For the wee ones, Barrowland Ballet bring The Gift to The Studio, the second delight in our trio of early years festive commissions with Eden Court and Aberdeen Performing Arts. We’re also delighted to be coproducing The Unexpected Gift with Barrowland Ballet, a specially adapted show for audiences with complex needs.

We’re delighted to announce a new programme of artist development opportunities, Open @ The Studio. We can’t wait to welcome Edinburgh’s creative community into the space to share their work, learn more about our industry and grow their ambition.

Georges Bizet’s show-stopping opera of jealousy, lust, and life outside the dictates of society is boldly updated in this new production. With one hit melody after another – including the Habanera, Flower Aria and Toreador Song –Carmen has musical riches for all.
Director John Fulljames (Nixon in China 2020) sets the story amidst the unrest and upheavals of 1970s Spain, where an investigation into Carmen’s murder unfolds alongside the rollercoaster of events that lead to her death. With a new English translation, this is Carmen as you’ve never seen it before! Acclaimed Lithuanian mezzo-soprano Justina Gringytė sings the title role.
Sung in English with English supertitles

Now in their 21st year, Cassa Pancho’s Ballet Black is excited to present award-winning choreographers, Will Tuckett and Mthuthuzeli November in a double bill of new and original work in Ballet Black: Pioneers
Will Tuckett’s Then Or Now, originally created in 2020, blends classical ballet, music and the poetry of Adrienne Rich to ask the question: in times like these, where do we each belong?
The second piece on the bill is devised by award-winning choreographer, Mthuthuzeli November. Nina: By Whatever Means, is inspired by the artistry and activism of Nina Simone. November weaves a skilful picture of Simone’s turbulent and influential life to take us on an emotional and empowering journey.

Under the buzzing lights of a psychiatric hospital in Aberdeenshire in 1897, Mina Murray recounts her encounters with the most terrifying of beasts: Dracula. A throng of patients listen with bated breath as they are transported to a world where immortality and ultimate power is possible, even for women - but with terrible consequences...
Not for the faint-hearted, Morna Pearson’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic tale is filled with her trademark humour and taste for the strange and grotesque. This breathtaking gothic production transposes the action to Scotland amid the wild beauty of the landscapes of the northeast which originally inspired the novel. With an all-women and non-binary ensemble cast we witness the addiction, intoxication, and empowerment of Mina. Miss this contemporary re-telling at your peril...
