Daksha Sheth Dance Company

Sari

Wed 27 September 7.30pm Festival Theatre

India’s most innovative dance company makes its Edinburgh debut with Sari, a celebration of the creation of this unique drape, in constant play with the body, both in stillness and in movement. India’s tradition of handwoven textiles, with its incredible range of colour, texture and design, has, for millennia, been one of the most defining and visually striking elements of the Indian persona. Each sari is a unique extension of the weavers’ own body. What begins in the weavers’ hands culminates in a personal and sensuous experience for the wearer, the Indian woman’s visual identity, her second skin.

“ A stunning blend of martial arts, yoga and aerial with rhythmic overtones of classical Indian dance” 96.3 FM, Canada “ The dancers of the Daksha Sheth Company are phenomenal!” The Guardian Tickets £16 Friends 20% off Groups (8+) £4 off (Stalls & Dress) Concessions £3 off

Tough girls and pretty boys living life in the margins, dreaming about being at the centre. Velvet Petal explores the transformative power of beauty, created out of whatever is on the bedroom floor. The dancers experiment, seduce and philosophise through their bodies, clothing and ideas. This fresh new work from Scottish Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Fleur Darkin (Bristol Old Vic, Edinburgh International Festival, Royal Opera House) is inspired by the life-cycle of the monarch butterfly and Robert Mapplethorpe’s polaroids. Set to a fresh dance-punk score arranged by Torben Lars Sylvest including music by LCD Soundsystem, Spoek Mathambo, and Abul Mogard.

Experience the bold, sensual power of Igor Stravinsky’s scores, performed by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. A programme of two dramatically contrasting ballets. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ice Maiden, The Fairy’s Kiss (Le Baiser de la Fée) was first brought to The Royal Ballet’s stage by renowned Scottish choreographer Sir Kenneth MacMillan. Adding a dark edge to an unsettling tale, the ballet received rave reviews on its 1960 debut.

25 years after MacMillan’s death, Gary Harris has created stunning new sets and costumes for this landmark season. The Rite of Spring - Feel the raw energy of the score and the anguish of moral conflict, brought to an end through violent sacrifice. Choreographed by Christopher Hampson, this ballet was widely acclaimed at the 2013 Edinburgh International Festival.

Evenings 7.30pm Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm King’s Theatre Three broken hearts, one Soho hang-out, and the only man who could ever help them… Welcome to the Preacher Man, the swinging 1960s Soho joint where the kids danced the night away to the latest crazes and dared to dream of love, while the legendary owner, The Preacher Man himself, dispensed advice to cure the loneliest of hearts. Only, that was a long time ago and all that remains are the memories, the stories and the myths. Until now, that is, when three random strangers, generations apart but all in need of help with their hopeless love lives, are inexplicably drawn to the site of the original venue. Featuring the greatest hits of Dusty Springfield, including The Look Of Love, I Only Want To Be With You, Spooky and of course, the classic Son Of A Preacher Man, this sparklingly funny and sweetly touching new musical play by internationally-renowned writer Warner Brown will have you laughing, crying and singing your heart out to some of the greatest songs ever written.

Faced with a truth too difficult to comprehend, she consults psychiatrist Dr Feldmann (Oliver Cotton, The Borgias, Midsomer Murders, Sensitive Skin) and through a series of highly charged encounters is led to examine her deepest emotions and finally to consider a future without music. TRAINSPOTTING By Irvine Welsh Adapted by Harry Gibson

Tue 14 to Sat 18 November Evenings 7.30pm Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm King’s Theatre

Who needs reasons when you’ve got heroin? Trainspotting hurtles through the heroin hinterlands of Thatcher-era Leith. In a world where work and opportunities are scarce, Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie and Spud rail against the trappings of a successful lifestyle held out of their reach, and seek life through the point of a needle. Published in 1993, Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting defined a generation and remains one of the most hard-hitting stories of our time. After sell-out success in 2016, the Citizens Theatre bring this intense and often hilarious story home to Edinburgh.

The sumptuous set and costumes perfectly complement Verdi’s magnificent music, which is packed with drama, heady romance and passion. DANCING SNOWFLAKES, TOY SOLDIERS AND THE SUGAR PLUM FAIRY COME TO LIFE IN THIS MAGICAL FAMILY CLASSIC.

The Nutcracker

Sat 9 to Sat 30 December Festival Theatre

Costumes plucked from the most gorgeous chocolate box; Tchaikovsky’s score to take you to a land of dreams; and a story lifted straight from the pages of a classic fairy tale. This winter, banish the dark skies and transport your whole family into the world of the Nutcracker Prince and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Experience a fantastical adventure with a little girl called Clara, as she drifts off to sleep on Christmas Eve. She meets her Prince, is confronted by a battle of larger-than-life mice and rats, and is whisked into the luscious land of sweets – it even snows on stage! Accompanied by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra, this is classical ballet at its most sumptuous. Devised in 1973 by the founding Artistic Director, Peter Darrell, The Nutcracker was revived to widespread acclaim in 2014.

Evenings 7.30pm Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm King’s Theatre Winner of the 1997 Olivier Award for Best New Play, Conor McPherson’s chilling, modern classic The Weir comes to Edinburgh. In a small Irish town, the locals exchange stories round the crackling fire of Brendan’s pub to while away the hours one stormy night. As the beer and whisky flows, the arrival of a young stranger, haunted by a secret from her past, turns the tales of folklore into something more unsettling. One story, however, is more chilling and more real than any of them could have ever imagined. A shadowy tale delving into the dark corners of human lives, The Weir is a co-production between English Touring Theatre and Mercury Theatre Colchester.

The physically charged and sensual choreography fuses contemporary dance with nods to the Spanish paso doble and flamenco. A stunning set design by Luis Crespo and minimalist black-and-white costumes by fashion designer David Delfin evoke the paintings of Pablo Picasso. Evenings 7.30pm Matinees Thu & Sat 2.30pm Festival Theatre Following sell-out runs at the National Theatre and in the West End this extraordinarily prescient play takes on a new importance in the current political climate. Are we in the midst of a political revolution? Can the country stay united? Roll back to 1974. The corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In an era of chaos, both hilarious and shocking, fist fights break out in the parliamentary bars, high-stake tricks and games are played, while sick or dying MPs are carried through the lobby to register their crucial votes as the government hangs by a thread.

James Graham’s biting, energetic and critically-acclaimed play strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes who roll up their sleeves, and on occasion bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments. Directed by Jeremy Herrin (People, Places & Things, Wolf Hall), This House gives us a timely, moving and often amusing insight into the workings of British politics.

Matthew Bourne’s interpretation of the classic fairy tale has, at its heart, a true war-time romance. A chance meeting results in a magical night for Cinderella and her dashing young RAF pilot, together just long enough to fall in love before being parted by the horrors of the Blitz. With Lez Brotherston’s sumptuous Olivier Award-winning designs, and lighting by Olivier Award-winning Neil Austin, Cinderella will be performed in Surround Sound, designed by Paul Groothuis and featuring a specially commissioned recording played by a 60 piece orchestra.

DF Traviata Scottish Opera FESTIVAL THEATRE

Fri 17 November 3pm Tickets £10

LA TRAVIATA

Passionate, flamboyant, gripping; Sir David McVicar’s La traviata is not to be missed. Set in the demi-monde of 1880s Paris, this stunning show is designed with sumptuous period style and gets right to the core of Violetta and Alfredo’s doomed love affair – finding a heartbreakingly human story in the midst of a hedonistic world where both the rich and the wretched have their fun. Verdi’s magnificent score sweeps the characters through their every shifting mood, brought to life by Russian-Dutch soprano Gulnara Shafigullina and Dutch tenor Peter Gijsbertsen.
