Inés de Castro is the Spanish mistress to Pedro, the Crown Prince of Portugal. As anti-Spanish sentiment begins to rise, the King of Portugal prepares to banish Inés for the good of the State, but his scheming advisor Pacheco has more extreme measures in mind. When war erupts, Pedro leaves to lead his men into battle. Abandoned by her lover and surrounded by enemies, Inés falls into a nightmare of political intrigue, where much more than her position is at stake. MacMillan’s music is rooted in the oldest of operatic traditions but looks at it all with fresh eyes in a unique, visceral experience that has all the grandeur of Verdi. This new production gives him the chance to revisit his score with the benefit of 20 years of experience as Scotland’s foremost composer, bringing new musical insights to the fore. What’s at the heart of a woman? Eccentric toymaker Dr Coppélius wants to know, and he’s planning to bring his mechanical doll, Coppélia, to life – he just needs the right spell. When Dr Coppélius leaves Coppélia on his workshop balcony she’s soon causing quite a stir in the village. Particularly in the heart of red-blooded young lover Franz, and the jealous mind of his real-life fiancée, Swanilda – who’s mistaken the mannequin for a crying, talking, sleeping, walking rival. With a wild mix of abracadabra, and some mischievous maidens, comic chaos is riotously unleashed when humans and automatons collide in Dr Coppélius’s spooky toyshop. Sir Peter Wright’s enchanting production of this joyous and witty ballet is an ever popular celebration of love, with a sparkling score and breath taking choreography. Coppélia is guaranteed to lift the hearts of all the family.

Mon 23 to Sat 28 February 2015 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm STARRING TOM CONTI Following its record breaking West End run, this powerful new production of Reginald Rose’s gripping courtroom thriller Twelve Angry Men has been hailed as the “classiest, most intelligent drama in the West End,” bringing to stage the taut brilliance of the 1957 three-time Academy Award nominated film, considered to be one of the great ‘must-see’ movies of all time. A jury has murder on their minds and a life in their hands as they decide the fate of a young delinquent accused of killing his father. But what appears to be an open and shut case soon becomes a huge dilemma as prejudices and preconceived ideas about the accused, the trial and each other turn the tables every which way, until the nail-biting climax... Tom Conti is one of the most respected and celebrated actors of his generation. Unforgettable as the leading man in hit films such as Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, Shirley Valentine he most recently appeared in The Dark Knight Rises.

Tue 3, Thu 5 & Sat 7 March 2015 Evenings 7.15pm Ashley Page, former Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet, directs Gluck’s dramatic Orfeo. With an internationally acclaimed creative team including Mark Jonathan and Johan Engels, renowned for his vivid, theatrical designs, this production promises a visual spectacular that draws inspiration from an eclectic range of sources including Dior’s ‘New Look’ and the exotic colours of tribal Africa. In a world where gods see fit to meddle in the lives of men, Orfeo, distraught by the death of his lover, resolves to defy their will and rescue her from Hades. But the gods have their rules; Euridice may be allowed to escape, but only if Orfeo can stop himself from looking at her until they are once again safe above ground. It seems a simple task, but will Euridice understand his sudden coldness? Focusing on dramatic effect over the vocal display so favoured by his contemporaries, Gluck’s music gives a unique glimpse forward into the Romantic era. At one moment full of fury, the next clear and pure, his music is full of emotion. New production Sung in Italian with English supertitles

John Byrne’s funny and poignant play paints a vivid picture of the tough, rebellious, working-class culture of 1950s industrial Scotland. The original creators revive this landmark theatre show for the stage in a major new production from the Citizens Theatre.

Called “One of the finest plays Alan Bennett has ever written” by the Daily Telegraph, The History Boys opened at the National Theatre in 2004 to rave reviews and a sell-out run and went on to become one of their biggest ever hits, winning over 30 major awards including the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best New Play. In a recent national survey this comic masterpiece was voted the nation’s favourite play. Set in the 1980s, The History Boys is the story of a group of bright, funny and unruly sixth-formers in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university. Their maverick English teacher is at odds with the young and shrewd supply teacher, whilst their headmaster is obsessed with results and league tables. Staffroom rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence overflow, provoking insistent questions about history and how you teach it. Their A-Levels may be over, but their true education is only just beginning. From the company that brought you Avenue Q and Sunset Song.

Based on Mel Brooks’ much loved Academy Award winning movie, The Producers is a hilarious musical comedy that has taken Broadway and the West End by storm, winning a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards and 3 Olivier Awards. Impoverished by a string of flops, New York producer Max Bialystock recruits timid accountant Leo Bloom to help him pull off Broadway’s greatest scam. Together they aim to produce the worst show ever and run away to Rio with millions, but they learn that Showbusiness can always find a way to kick you in the teeth... Featuring the all time classic Springtime For Hitler and starring award-winning comedian Jason Manford as Leo Bloom and choreographer and TV personality Louie Spence as Carmen Ghia, The Producers may be the funniest Broadway musical of all time.

Jenufa, a young woman living in a remote rural village, is pregnant, though as yet unmarried. Her stern stepmother, worried for the family’s reputation and her own status as the Kostelnicka, the leader of their village, hides Jenufa away to bear her child. Months later, the river thaws and a gruesome secret is uncovered. Suspicion falls immediately on Jenufa but the truth will out, and the higher you climb, the further you have to fall… Famed for its distinctive musical voice, Jenufa is one of the most powerful of all Janácek’s operas. Inspired by traditional folk melodies and with colourful orchestration and rhythmic bite, the score sweeps the story along with tension, drama and overwhelming emotion.

“ The audience were jumping out of their seats” .............................................................................

The creative team behind 2012’s sell-out La traviata returns to bring Jenufa to life, promising a beautifully observed production that makes full use of their extensive narrative gifts. All the more compelling for drawing its audience into a claustrophobic community that is so universally recognisable, Jenufa has been keeping audiences on the edge of their seats for over 100 years.

>

Now celebrating 25 years in the West End, The Woman in Black is “a marvellous exercise in tension, spun from perfectly paced storytelling” (The Independent) that has enthralled over 7 million people since its original debut.

Thu 21, Sun 24, Wed 27 & Sat 30 May 2015 Evenings 7.15pm | Matinee Sun 4pm (No eve perf.) Opera at its grandest, Verdi’s Il trovatore hasn’t been seen on the Scottish Opera stage since 2001. Dark and menacing, Peter Watson’s production gives this monumental story the space it deserves, providing a majestic backdrop for a cast and chorus of over 50. A gypsy woman is discovered in the castle of the Count di Luna, crouched over the cradle of his youngest son. When the boy falls ill, she is burned at the stake for witchcraft. Her daughter, crazed with grief, snatches the child intending to kill him, but in her madness, throws her own son onto the fire. Years later, she has brought the Count’s son up as her own and he and his elder brother, unaware of their relationship, are rivals for the beautiful Leonora. Jealousy, revenge, love and hate collide as the opera crashes towards its inexorable conclusion. Verdi’s score is packed with a dizzying succession of full-blooded melodies, from the thrilling Anvil Chorus and Manrico’s stirring ‘Di quella pira’ to the spine-tingling Miserere. Dolly West’s Kitchen by Frank McGuinness

Imaginate Festival

Wed 27 to Sat 30 May 2015 | 7.30pm

Mon 11 to Sat 17 May 2015

In 1943 Dolly West is at her family home in Donegal after fleeing from Italy at the outbreak of war. She runs the house for her mother Rima, sister Esther and husband Ned, and younger brother Justin, an officer in the Irish Free State army and a fervent nationalist.

Scotland’s international festival of performing arts for children and young people.

Questions over the neutrality of both Ireland and of the West household are raised when Rima invites three soldiers - Alec, an English officer; Marco and Jamie, two US troopers from the war zone just across the nearby Eire / UK border. Soon clashes of loyalty, jealousy, sexual identity and love creep in.

There are 14 national and international productions to choose from this year, from Scotland, England and across Europe; each and every one adding their own wonderfully distinctive character to a programme of exciting, stimulating and quality shows to suit children and adults of every age.

Founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts presenting a playful, entertaining view of classical ballet in parody form Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo first performed in the late-late shows in Off-Off Broadway lofts and are now treasured all around the world. Affectionately known as The Trocks, this company of professional male dancers presents an inspired blend of their loving knowledge of dance, their brilliant comic approach, and the astounding fact that men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces!

When a group of schoolboys survive a catastrophic plane crash, what starts as a desert island adventure quickly descends into a struggle for survival in a darkly sinister world of superstition and immorality. Playing to sell-out audiences during its original run, this acclaimed production is guaranteed to grip from start to finish.

Tue 27 to Sat 31 October 2015 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Thu & Sat 2.30pm This beautiful new staging of a much-loved ballet is produced by two superstar performers, Ethan Stiefel and Johan Kobborg (former principal dancers of American Ballet Theatre and The Royal Ballet respectively). Disguise and revelation, love and jealousy combine in this tragic tale. A love story unfolds against the ghostly backdrop of a Rhineland forest haunted by the fearful presence of the “Wilis” - vengeful spirits of abandoned brides. The beautiful peasant girl, Giselle, falls for Albrecht who conceals his identity to win her. The discovery of her lover’s deception shatters Giselle’s innocence and causes her to die of a broken heart. Albrecht is thrown into the hands of the merciless Wilis, but Giselle cannot bear to watch him die and returns as a ghost to save him.
