Tue 29 April to Sat 3 May 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm It is 1992, Grimley Colliery faces the threat of closure and the future of the brass band seems uncertain. With the miners torn between redundancy packages and the picket lines, band-leader Danny’s hopes of winning the national brass band competition seem like a distant dream. But the arrival of flugelhorn-playing Gloria brings hope, romance and controversy to the Yorkshire brass band on the brink of collapse. Featuring rousing live music including Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and Jerusalem, Brassed Off is a funny and heartwarming drama that reaches stirring heights as local Dalkeith and Monktonhall Brass Band performs the final scene, set in the Royal Albert Hall, live on stage at the King’s. Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike of 1984, this production is directed by Damian Cruden (director of Olivier Award-winning The Railway Children), and starring John McArdle (Brookside).

Wed 7 to Sat 10 May 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Thu & Sat 2.30pm What happens when the rock and roll of swinging sixties London collides with the rock and moss of remote Scotland? Sandy Sheridan, pretentious art critic and self-proclaimed cultural icon, returns from London to his Scottish country pile – with his new, much younger wife in tow. Waiting for him are his stoical daughter Shona and his acerbic ex-brother-in-law, Uncle Varick. John Byrne, acclaimed author of The Slab Boys Trilogy and Tutti Frutti, and iconic Scottish painter (whose works include the domed ceiling of the King’s Theatre), relocates Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece Uncle Vanya to 1960’s rural Scotland in a play full of comedy, pathos, jealously, lust and some very dodgy chainsaws. Edinburgh theatre favourite Jimmy Chisholm (Para Handy, Take the High Road) leads a cast of great Scottish performers. Set against a sensational sixties soundtrack, arranged and performed by Dave “The Steamie” Anderson, Uncle Varick is a great comedy and a great night out.
“ In John Byrne’s witty version of Uncle Vanya, the laughs come thick and fast.”The Guardian

Thu 8, Sun 11, Tue 13, Thu 15 & Sat 17 May 2014 Evenings Tue, Thu & Sat 7.15pm | Matinee Sun 4pm Classic, timeless and stylish, Sir David McVicar’s Madama Butterfly has been a firm favourite since it was first staged in 2000. Brought to life through a cast of very human characters, this hugely atmospheric production lays bare a poignant story that still has the power to affect, over a century after it was first performed. Cio-Cio-San, a young girl living in Nagasaki, has fallen for Pinkerton, a reckless American naval officer stationed near her home. Despite her family’s objections, she gives up all she has to marry him, but he soon abandons her to return to America. When he returns three years later she is still patiently waiting, willing to do whatever is needed in the name of love. But ahead lie only betrayal and heartbreak. One of the world’s most popular operas, Butterfly sees Puccini doing what he does best – writing beautiful music that is dramatic and full of emotion. Korean soprano Hye-Youn Lee, one of The Independent on Sunday’s ‘Faces to Watch’ in 2013, and Anne Sophie Duprels (Manon 2009) share the role of Butterfly and José Ferrero (Tosca 2012) is Pinkerton.

HHHHH “Breathtaking – a triumph” Sunday Herald Wed 21 to Sat 24 May 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinee Sat 2pm Scottish Ballet returns with a powerful reinterpretation of an alltime classic. Incredibly moving and enduringly relevant, this unique version of Romeo & Juliet was created for Scottish Ballet by Polish choreographer Krzysztof Pastor in 2008 and has since gained status as one of the company’s most iconic works. Set in the 20th century, this passionate story of forbidden love unfolds in three dramatic acts. Beginning in a 1930s monochrome Italian metropolis, Pastor shows a world torn apart by conflict in which Romeo and Juliet meet and fall deeply in love. The second act moves to the sepia-toned 1950s in the wake of Mussolini’s fascist dictatorship, Romeo and Juliet have to hide their forbidden love. Finally, the third act is dominated by the eerie blue light of television cameras that report 24/7 from the frontline of global wars and the secret couple go to dramatic lengths to keep their love eternal. The dancers of Scottish Ballet – for whom the piece was created – bring these iconic roles to life with emotional intensity and breathtaking performances. Romeo & Juliet is set to the world-famous Prokofiev score – performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra.

Going for Gold explores young peoples’ motivation to be the best that they can be.
Wednesday Addams, ultimate princess of darkness, has fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family.
Almost every talented youngster at Pilrig Park school has contributed to the show, working in an area of the arts which interests them; the choreography, costumes and sets are all put together by pupils and teachers.
Wednesday confides in her father, begging him not to tell her mother. Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before: keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia.
This is an uplifting, and often moving night at the theatre which will make you proud to support this very special local school.
Everything changes for the family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s ‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents.

In this double bill Paris Opera Ballet presents George Balanchine’s 1947 ballet Le Palais de Cristal choreographed to Georges Bizet, the Symphony in C in a production designed by Christian Lacroix alongside Benjamin Millepied’s new work an adaptation of Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé his third creation for the company. Accompanying the dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet for the first time, Philippe Jordan conducts these masterpieces of French music.
Cavalleria Rusticana is a one-act opera considered one of the classics of verismo opera. The opera was composed by Pietro Mascagni, with a libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti, as part of an 1888 competition. After winning the competition, the opera enjoyed a successful performance history often paired with Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. Inspired by the success of Cavalleria Rusticana, Leoncavallo composed a verismo opera based on the true events of an 1865 murder. The opera was instantly successful with the public, and was first performed as a double-bill with Cavalleria Rusticana on December 11, 1893 at the Metropolitan Opera.

Mon 16 to Sat 21 June 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm The tender and heart-warming tales of country vet James Herriot, among the dales and moors, farmhouses and public houses, were expertly captured in a series of novels which have sold in their millions all over the world, and have been made into two films and a classic BBC TV series. Now these stories are being brought to the stage in a major new dramatisation. The adventures of James, Siegfried and his easy-going brother Tristan Farnon, are brought to life alongside the unique characters – and animals – that live and work on the Yorkshire moors. The starry line-up includes Oliver Mellor from Coronation Street, Susan Penhaligon much loved for Bouquet Of Barbed Wire and many more TV series, Clare Buckfield from 2Point4 Children, TV regular and Blue Peter favourite Mark Curry and heartthrob Lee Latchford-Evans from multi-million selling pop sensation Steps.

Featuring some of the greatest pop songs ever written, 20th Century Boy tells the story of Marc Bolan and his band T.Rex, exposing some of the myths and taking the audience on a tearful, yet joyful, journey through Marc’s fascinating life. Rocker, poet, electric warrior, king of glam and godfather of punk, Bolan was arguably the biggest rock star the UK had ever seen. ‘Bigger than The Beatles’, the media said. Before his tragic death in 1977, just days short of his 30th birthday, Bolan lived life at breakneck speed, creating a series of iconic images, a string of number one hits and an army of obsessive fans. Packed with all T.Rex’s 70s hits, staged by Gary Lloyd (Thriller Live) and with a West End cast, 20th Century Boy is a glorious story and celebration of glam rock at its colorful best!
Featuring the smash hits Get It On, Ride a White Swan, Metal Guru, I Love to Boogie, Hot Love, 20th Century Boy and many more.

Tue 30 September to Sat 4 October 2014 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm Marking the centenary of the First World War, this new dramatisation of Pat Barker’s unforgettable Booker-nominated novel is adapted by Olivier Award-winning playwright Nicholas Wright (His Dark Materials, Vincent in Brixton). Craiglockhart War Hospital, Edinburgh 1917. Poet and soldier Siegfried Sassoon has been institutionalised in an attempt to undermine his public disapproval of the war. His Army Psychiatrist, Dr William Rivers has been tasked with returning shell-shocked officers to the trenches, yet under Sassoon’s influence, has become tormented by the morality of what is being done in the name of medicine. Reminding us that some of the most touching of friendships are borne from the most brutal of conflicts, Regeneration is a compassionate look at war and its devastating effects.

Tue 4 & Wed 5 November 2014 Evenings 7.30pm Brazil’s internationally acclaimed dance company makes a welcome return to the UK following sell out performances in the 2010 Edinburgh International Festival. With a history stretching back nearly 40 years, Grupo Corpo’s virtuosic 22 dancers combine the precision of classical ballet with the sensuality and passion of Latin dance rhythms The Company will perform two pieces, choreographed by artistic director Rodrigo Pederneiras. Parabelo sees the dancers sweep across the stage, moving rhythmically from group to solo and back again. There are moments of utter peace and stillness and others of raucous Brazilian carnival. Sem Mim is a darker piece which takes its inspiration from a Portuguese song cycle and focuses on a group of women who lament the departure of their lovers. Dressed in intricately patterned and colourful bodysuits, the dancers move as waves; the ebb and flow of their bodies mimicking the calm and fury of the sea.

Wed 4 to Sat 7 February 2015 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Thu & Sat 2.30pm What’s at the heart of a woman? Eccentric toymaker Dr Coppélius wants to know, and he’s planning to bring his mechanical doll, Coppélia, to life – he just needs the right spell. When Dr Coppélius leaves Coppélia on his workshop balcony she’s soon causing quite a stir in the village. Particularly in the heart of red-blooded young lover Franz, and the jealous mind of his real-life fiancée, Swanilda – who’s mistaken the mannequin for a crying, talking, sleeping, walking rival. With a wild mix of abracadabra, and some mischievous maidens, comic chaos is riotously unleashed when humans and automatons collide in Dr Coppélius’s spooky toyshop. Sir Peter Wright’s enchanting production of this joyous and witty ballet is an ever popular celebration of love, with a sparkling score and breath taking choreography. Coppélia is guaranteed to lift the hearts of all the family.

UK Première Thu 26 to Sat 28 February 2015 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinee Sat 2.30pm Northern Ballet brings the UK Première of Jean-Christophe Maillot’s, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo production of Romeo & Juliet to Festival Theatre Edinburgh in 2015. Set to Prokofiev’s unforgettable score, played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia, Romeo & Juliet is choreographed by acclaimed dance-maker Jean-Christophe Maillot, who has been invited by the Bolshoi Ballet to create a new version of The Taming of the Shrew in July 2014. His beautiful interpretation captures the essence of what it means to be young and in love, and tells of the devastating tragedy that unfolds when tenderness and naivety is met with violence and pride. Northern Ballet ‘boasts the best dance-actors in the world’ (Dance Europe) and is the perfect Company to bring a new passion to this famous story. Be amongst the first in the UK to experience this very special ballet.

Wed 18 to Sat 21 March 2015 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinee Sat 2pm After the hugely successful UK world premiere tour of A Streetcar Named Desire in 2012, Scottish Ballet returns to the Festival Theatre with this award winning production. This vibrant take on A Streetcar Named Desire, born through collaboration with theatre and film director Nancy Meckler and international choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa is a powerful infusion of drama and dance. Trying to leave a troubled past behind her, fading southern belle Blanche DuBois moves into her sister Stella’s New Orleans apartment. Stella’s brutish husband Stanley sees that Blanche is not what she appears to be, and sets out to destroy her... The Scottish Ballet Orchestra accompanies live, performing the Jazz infused score by Peter Salem.
“ The result is everything you could want of Tennessee Williams - florid, poetic, and poisonously beautiful - with just the right amount of New Orleans seasoning to the action.” London Evening Standard

As refreshing and thrilling as the day it was written, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s OKLAHOMA! is the original feel-good musical. From the minute the rugged cowboy Curly steps on to the stage singing Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’ we know that all will be right with the world. This colourful production overflows with well-known songs such as I’m Just a Girl Who Cain’t Say No, Surrey With a Fringe on Top, Kansas City, People Will Say We’re in Love and, of course, the rousing title song itself! Celebrating the vigour of America’s pioneering spirit with classic tunes and boot-stomping dances, we follow Curly and the girl of his dreams, Laurey, as they travel down love’s highway on an extremely bumpy surrey ride.
