Acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love, Arcadia, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead) returns to the National Theatre with his highly-anticipated new play The Hard Problem, directed by Nicholas Hytner (Othello, Hamlet, One Man, Two Guvnors). Hilary, a young psychology researcher at a brain science institute, is nursing a private sorrow and a troubling question at work: If there is nothing but matter, what is consciousness? Experience this hot new play in Scotland’s largest cinema, the Festival Theatre.

Academy Award® nominee Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient, Schindler’s List) plays Jack Tanner, celebrated radical thinker and rich bachelor, in this exhilarating reinvention of Shaw’s witty, provocative classic. A romantic comedy, an epic fairytale, a fiery philosophical debate, Man and Superman asks fundamental questions about how we live. Jack Tanner, celebrated radical thinker and rich bachelor, seems an unlikely choice as guardian to the alluring heiress, Ann. But she takes it in her assured stride and, despite the love of a poet, she decides to marry and tame this dazzling revolutionary.

Il trovatore

Thu 21, Sun 24, Wed 27 & Sat 30 May 2015 Evenings 7.15pm (not Sun) | Sun 4pm When the infant son of Count di Luna falls ill after a visit from a gypsy woman, she is burned at the stake for witchcraft. Her daughter snatches the child intending to kill him, but, mad with grief, throws her own son onto the fire. Years later, she has brought the Count’s son up as her own and he and his elder brother, unaware of their relationship, are rivals for the beautiful Leonora. Jealousy, revenge, love and hate collide as the opera crashes towards its unstoppable conclusion. This restaging from director Martin Lloyd-Evans conjures up all the superstition and fearfulness of the Dark Ages. The stark, brooding lines of the set stand in contrast to the blood and thunder of Verdi’s music, providing a majestic backdrop for a cast and chorus of over 50. Full-blooded opera at its grandest, Verdi’s score is packed with a dizzying succession of familiar melodies, from the thrilling Anvil Chorus and Manrico’s stirring ‘Di quella pira’ to the spinetingling Miserere. The cast features some of the UK’s finest singers, including Roland Wood, Anne Mason and Matthew Best, leading British soprano Claire Rutter and renowned Welsh tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones. Tobias Ringborg conducts. Sung in Italian with English supertitles

As the world stands on the brink of war, the foundations of the royal family are shaken with Edward VIII’s abdication and the only suitable successor his shy, stammering brother. Thrust into a position he never thought he was born to take, can maverick Australian speech therapist and failed actor Lionel Logue help him overcome his affliction and transform from Bertie to King George VI?

Performing Arts Studio Scotland (PASS) at Edinburgh College invite you to their end-ofyear production. Featuring the choreographic work of dance teaching staff from PASS, student dancers will showcase contemporary and jazz styles. The Cross Currents show is one of the College’s highlights of the year. This is an exciting theatrical experience and a chance to see tomorrow’s performers today.

In 1943 Dolly West is at her family home in Donegal after fleeing from Italy at the outbreak of war. She runs the house for her mother Rima, sister Esther and husband Ned, and younger brother Justin, an officer in the Irish Free State army and a fervent nationalist.

Dazzling lights, swinging songs and a bad boy to melt your heart – don’t miss this fabulous production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. When Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan fall in love, little do they realise that Billy’s rebellious ways will result in tragedy. Billy is given a chance to make good, but is it too little too late, or will a lucky star save him and those he loves?

The Car Man is loosely based on Bizet’s popular opera and has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in New Adventures’ repertoire. The familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy 1950s garage-diner in the American mid-West where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. Featuring Lez Brotherston’s epic design and Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling with music by Terry Davies and Rodion Shchedrin’s ‘Carmen Suite’ (after Bizet’s Carmen), The Car Man is another spectacular production from the UK’s most popular dance theatre company.

This year the pupils from Pilrig Park have built on the legacy from last year’s show which was all about the Commonwealth Games. Learners are determined to be the best that they can be so this year we look at a learner’s journey through life.

Enjoy a unique opportunity to have your mind blown with a killer mix of illusion, sleight-of hand, circus and mind-reading from around the world. In a world where mystery doesn’t exist, where every question can be answered with a couple of swipes and a click, come enjoy a live experience that will bring back that childhood sense of wonder at the Edinburgh International Magic Festival Gala Show this summer.

A love-struck soldier and celebrity toreador spar for the love of the alluring gypsy Carmen in this beloved classic. Bizet’s masterpiece – an opera whose striking defiance of bourgeoisie morality resulted in scandal at its Paris premiere in 1874 – comes to the magnificent Ancient Greek Theatre of Taormina this July. Framed by the enduring pillars of an ancient outdoor theatre, Bizet’s opera endures, enticing audiences with its classic tale of tragic seduction.

BAFTA winner and Academy Award® nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one of English drama’s oldest plays, directed by the National Theatre’s new Director Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road). Chicago Blues sparked the British blues boom in the 60’s – The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall. Muddy Waters personified Blues from Chicago, and his eldest son Mud Morganfield can sound uncannily like his father, as he proved last time at the Festival Theatre The singer is back, in a double bill with another of Chicago’s famous sons, guitarist, Lurrie Bell, currently producing the best music of his life (voted 2014 Blues Guitarist of The Year, and Blues in My Soul, the best Blues CD of the Year by Living Blues). With a band featuring legendary drummer, Willie “The Touch” Hayes.

The undisputed king of boogie woogie, swing and r’n’b is dazzling audiences of over 500,000 a year. No wonder. He always delivers fantastic entertainment, musicianship and good vibes. And that’s why he’s always a Jazz and Blues Festival feature.

In a career spanning 5 decades and over 30 albums, George Benson established himself as a jazz guitarist of the highest order, and then built a mainstream music career that has won him 10 Grammy awards. With his soulful and passionate voice, he’s built a huge catalogue of classic hits, including ‘Give Me The Night’, ‘Breezin’, ‘Turn Your Love Around’, ‘In Your Eyes’, and ‘Never Give Up on a Good Thing.’ Recently, he’s hit the headlines again with his celebrated ‘unforgettable’ tribute to Nat King Cole.

Evenings 7.30pm | Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Agatha Christie Theatre Company, And Then There Were None returns to the stage to follow in the footsteps of the company’s hugely successful Black Coffee and Go Back For Murder. Starring BAFTA nominated stage and screen star Paul Nicholas, Colin Buchanan, from Dalziel and Pascoe, Deborah Grant, who starred in Not Going Out, Peak Practice and Bergerac, TV favourite Mark Curry and from ITV’s award winning Soldier Soldier, Ben Nealon. A group of 10 strangers are lured to a remote island off the coast of Devon. Upon arrival it is discovered that their host, an eccentric millionaire, is missing... Stranded on the island by a torrential storm and haunted by an ancient nursery rhyme, one by one the guests begin to die... With only the fallen believed to be innocent who amongst them is the killer? Based on the best-selling mystery novel of all time, Agatha Christie’s own stage adaptation of this dark and captivating tale will thrill and enthral, as murder unfolds.

The Importance of Being Earnest is known to elegantly lampoon the hypocrisies of a Victorian society and opens as two bachelors, the dependable John Worthing, J.P. and upper class playboy Algernon Moncrieff, feel compelled to create different identities in order to pursue two eligible ladies Cecily Cardew and Gwendolyn Fairfax. The hilarious misadventures which result from their subterfuge; their brushes with the redoubtable Lady Bracknell and the uptight Miss Prism result in a plot that twists and fizzles with some of the finest dialogue to be found in theatre.

Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC’s Sherlock, The Imitation Game, Frankenstein at the National Theatre) takes on the title role of Shakespeare’s great tragedy, directed by Lyndsey Turner (Posh, Chimerica) and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions. Forced to avenge his father’s death but paralysed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state.

The Edinburgh Gang Show returns to the King’s Theatre for another fabulous show week.

FESTIVAL THEATRE

Thu 26 to Sat 28 November 2015 7.30pm Rambert has never sounded quite like this before. A full brass band joins the world-class dancers live on stage for Dark Arteries. This uplifting piece, created by Artistic Director Mark Baldwin and composer Gavin Higgins, celebrates how brass band music endures as the legacy of the communities which mined our coal-filled “dark arteries”. It is a dance which draws you into its emotional heart while the music lifts the hairs on the back of your neck, then raises the roof. Dark Arteries forms the centrepiece of a triple bill of stunning dance, which also includes Transfigured Night, a love story choreographed by two-time Olivier Award-winner Kim Brandstrup to Schoenberg’s achingly beautiful score, and The 3 Dancers, which brings one of Picasso’s greatest paintings, and the tragic love triangle that inspired it, vividly to life.

Sat 5 to Thu 31 December 2015 Discover the enchanted, sparkling world of Christopher Hampson’s Cinderella, in the European premiere of this most beloved fairy tale. In her grief, the young Cinderella plants a rose at her mother’s graveside. When her father remarries, the future seems bleaker than ever. Her wicked stepmother is intent on pushing aside kind and beautiful Cinderella in favour of her two nasty step sisters. The course of true love never did run smooth but Cinderella does meet her prince and romance blossoms.

“ Expressive storytelling, lovely choreography and stunning sets.” New Zealand Listener

Acclaimed New Zealand designer Tracy Grant Lord’s luxurious costumes and extravagant sets create a glittering fantasy world peopled with characters that are touching, funny and real. Dazzling against the light and dark of Prokofiev’s powerful score, this ravishing interpretation of the timeless rags-toriches romance is everything you could wish for and more. The Scottish Ballet Orchestra accompanies live performing the world famous Prokofiev score.

Southern Light, the company that packed out the King’s with Oliver!, invites you to Follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Land of Oz where Dorothy and her little dog Toto, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion head on an unforgettable adventure.

The Gondoliers is Gilbert & Sullivan’s sunniest and brightest light opera.

Legally Blonde is the best show in town, case closed! It is about knowing who you are and showing what you’ve got!

In the past when you put Sarah Millican outside, she asked things like: “Why? Where is the taxi? Do I need a cardie?” and said things like: “There’ll be wasps. I’ve nothing to sit on. Is that poo? Can we go home?” But things have changed. Now she has outside slippers. She can tell a chaffinch from a tit (hey). But she still can’t tell if it’s an owl or her husband’s asthma. Sarah Millican is venturing outside. Bring a cardie.

With a huge cast of Munchkins and Ozians, amazing special effects and all the much-loved music from the classic MGM film, The Wizard of Oz is the mustsee family musical at the King’s in 2016!

Two young Venetian gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri, find themselves thrust into another world when they discover one is actually heir to the throne of Barataria. The problem is, no one can figure out which man is the right one! After much confusion, a series of delightful twists and turns plays out to an exhilarating ending.

LOVE MUSICALS Tue 29 March to Sat 2 April 2016 Evenings 7.30pm | Matinee Wed & Sat 2.30pm It’s the 1980s and funny men Alec, Angus and Rory are one of Scotland’s top comedy acts. And now they are hitting the big time - top of the bill at the King’s Theatre Edinburgh - and it looks like they are getting a TV show. This comedy trio are riding high and nothing is going to stop them. Fast forward to today and the three find themselves together again for the first time in decades. What happened to break the group up? Will they be able to put their past differences behind them? And why do they still care who gets the biggest laugh? Starring Allan Stewart, Andy Gray and Grant Stott, this brand new comedy written and directed by Ed Curtis (director of I Dreamed A Dream, Jolson & Co and the King’s Panto) tells the tale of friendship, ambition and regret. And of course comedy - lots and lots of comedy.
