Tue 27 November to Sat 1 December 2012 New Adventures’ 25th birthday culminates with the world premiere of Matthew Bourne’s latest re-imagining of a ballet classic. Sleeping Beauty sees Bourne return to the music of Tchaikovsky to complete the trio of ballet masterworks that started with Nutcracker! and the international smash hit, Swan Lake. Our story begins in 1890 at the christening of Princess Aurora, an era when fairies and vampires fed the gothic imagination, before moving forward in time to the modern day. Featuring designs by Olivier Award-winners Lez Brotherston (Set and Costumes), Paule Constable (Lighting) with Sound Design by Paul Groothuis, which will take you into the heart of Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score in specially recorded surround sound. Matthew Bourne’s haunting new production is a Gothic Romance for all ages; a supernatural love story that even the passage of time cannot hinder. www.new-adventures.net

DIRECT FROM THE WEST END’S SAVOY THEATRE Mon 3 to Sat 8 December 2012 Straight from her sensational West End season, the ‘blistering talent’ Emi Wokoma stars in this ‘slick’ new musical (The Times), inspired by the life and times of Ike and Tina Turner. Wokoma’s ‘volcanic voice’ (Daily Mail) has taken London by storm and critics and audiences alike are raving about Emi’s raw energy and dazzling command of Turner’s classic hits. Don’t miss Emi Wokoma’s star-making performance alongside the complete West End cast, including Chris Tummings’ triumphant ‘hissably cocksure and sleazy Ike’ (The Independent), the ‘exuberant Ikettes’ (Daily Express) and the ‘superb’ on-stage band (Metro). Featuring hits like What’s Love Got to Do with It, Proud Mary, Private Dancer, River Deep Mountain High and of course Simply the Best, plus many more. The story follows the highs and lows, and passions and heartbreak, of Ike and Tina as their careers soared and their marriage crumbled. Full of heart and soul, electrifying choreography and stunning musical numbers, Soul Sister is sure to have you on your feet, partying the night away.

Thu 21 to Sat 23 March 2013 Northern Ballet is thrilled to announce an exciting new full-length ballet for 2013. The Great Gatsby, choreographed by David Nixon OBE, is adapted from the classic novel by F Scott Fitzgerald. On New York’s Long Island, in the heady, indulgent days of the 1920s, Nick Caraway comes to know his infamous neighbour Jay Gatsby – a mysterious millionaire with a secret past and a penchant for lavish parties. As the sparkling façade of Gatsby’s world begins to slip, Caraway comes to see the loneliness, obsession and tragedy that lie beneath. With choreography, direction and costumes by David Nixon, co-direction by Patricia Doyle and sets by Jérôme Kaplan, The Great Gatsby promises to be a stunning retelling of one of the most compelling stories of the twentieth century.

Tue 26, Thu 28 February & Sat 2 March 2013 Director Pia Furtado presents a new take on Werther in which the dark psychology of this compelling drama is ever present. The theatrical and imaginative staging accentuates the heightened emotions on stage, and brings to life a story that is a timeless testament to the destructive power of obsessive love.
Werther Sat 2 Mar 6pm The Flying Dutchman Sat 13 Apr 6pm Pirates of Penzance Sat 1 Jun 1pm
Touching, emotional and heartbreakingly sad, this tragic tale of forbidden love features some of Massenet’s finest writing. The orchestration is rich and sonorous but captures the quirks and foibles of each of the characters perfectly – from Charlotte’s tortured conflict to Werther’s unstable passion and increasing hysteria. Hungarian mezzo Viktoria Vizin, renowned the world over for her Carmen, sings Charlotte, and acclaimed American tenor Jonathan Boyd is Werther. The cast also includes Scottish Opera favourites Roland Wood, Jonathan Best, Harry Nicoll and David Morrison.

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth, this new production also marks Scottish Opera’s return to Wagner’s work for the first time since 2003’s Ring Cycle. Director Harry Fehr returns to stage a powerful production that is full of character and thick with brooding tension. Wagner’s epic score takes his characters from one overpowering emotion to the next. Full-blooded choruses, sweet, mellifluous melodies and an orchestral line driven by the furious rage and swell of the sea combine in a hugely atmospheric music-drama. Gilbert and Sullivan as it’s meant to be – pure, uncomplicated fun. Produced in partnership with D’Oyly Carte Opera Company this vibrant all singing, all dancing show is directed by Martin Lloyd Evans. Exquisitely observed and wonderfully funny, Gilbert’s high speed patter is razor sharp and Sullivan’s score sees him at the top of his game – mixing an operatic style to rival the great Italians of his day with the catchy, witty melodies for which he is so well known. G&S expert and D’Oyly Carte Music Director John Owen Edwards conducts. Mon 25 to Sat 30 March 2013 In 1997, a BAFTA Award-winning film about six out-of-work Sheffield steelworkers with nothing to lose took the world by storm. And now they’re back, live on stage, only this time, for them, it really has to be…The Full Monty. Simon Beaufoy, the Oscar-winning writer of the film, has now gone back to Sheffield where it all started to rediscover the men, the women, the heartache and the hilarity of a city on the dole. Featuring songs from the film by Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones, The Full Monty is brought to the stage by award-winning director Daniel Evans and stars Sidney Cole, Kenny Doughty, Craig Gazey, Roger Morlidge, Kieran O’Brien, Simon Rouse with Scott Anson, Tracy Brabin, Caroline Carver, Eamonn Fleming, Elaine Glover, Rachel Lumberg and Ian Mercer. This Sheffield Theatres production is presented by David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers, the award-winning producers of ‘Art’, Brief Encounter and Calendar Girls.

Tue 2 to Sat 6 April 2013 Leontes has everything a man could want: power, wealth, a loving family and friends. But he is not at peace. Inside he harbours a bitter jealousy that drives him to destroy all he holds dear. Many years later in a distant country a journey begins that may ultimately heal his pain and reunite his family in Shakespeare’s uplifting tale of reconciliation and forgiveness. Following her acclaimed 2012 RSC production of The Taming of the Shrew, Lucy Bailey returns to the Royal Shakespeare Company to direct a company including Jo Stone-Fewings as Leontes.

Powerful, poignant and humorous, Marguerite Donlon’s Labyrinth of Love takes audiences on a journey through the joy and pain of love. This visually stunning piece features striking video imagery and a poetic score sung live on stage by a soprano.
This ‘unique, profoundly imagined work’ (The Guardian) is a collaboration between one of Europe’s most exciting choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Turner Prize-winning sculptor Antony Gormley and 17 Buddhist monks from the Shaolin Temple in China. At once deeply hypnotic, playful and breathtakingly athletic, the monks perform such spectacular, dare-devil moves that you see them quite literally as leaps of faith. www.danceconsortium.com

“Wicked and compulsively watchable” Time Out
Wed 22 to Sat 25 May 2013 Presented exclusively by Scottish Ballet, Matthew Bourne’s Highland Fling is a wonderfully imaginative reworking of the classic romantic ballet La Sylphide. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to rediscover this ‘extravagantly witty’ (The Independent) tale brought home by Scotland’s national dance company. Highland Fling follows the antics of James, a young man who is lured from his nuptial bed by an unearthly siren. As his love for the strange and beautiful ‘Sylph’ becomes an obsession, he embarks on a fateful journey that takes him from the mean streets and nightclubs of Glasgow into a magical world beyond reality and reason. A wonderful night at the theatre for both dance and drama lovers.

Mon 18 to Sat 23 February 2013 Dreamboats & Petticoats meets Dirty Dancing in an all-new Rock ‘n’ Roll musical. From the writers, producers, creators and director of the huge success that is Dreamboats & Petticoats, Save the Last Dance for Me will take you back through the music and magic of the early 60s; a time when each passing week brought another Rock ‘n’ Roll classic. Featuring the unmistakable music of Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman, this nostalgic, feel-good journey will transport you back to music’s golden era as we follow two teenage sisters through the summer of ‘63. For the first time without their parents, the siblings embark on a holiday to the seaside. Full of freedom and high spirits they meet a handsome young American who invites them to a dance at the local U.S. Air force base. But young love and holiday romance is never as simple as it sounds, and the sisters soon realise that while the world around them is still watching itself in black and white, life and love can be much more colourful.

Mon 25 February to Sat 2 March 2013 After a triumphant West End run, Lindsay Posner’s acclaimed revival of one of the most popular plays ever written is touring the UK. Donna Summer is playing on the stereo. Dishes of cheese and pineapple are on the coffee table…the social get-together from hell is about to begin. Beverly and her estate agent husband Laurence have invited round new neighbours, Tony and Ange and nervous divorcee Sue – who’s twitchy about the party her teenage daughter, Abigail, is throwing over the road. As Beverly plies the guests with alcohol, cigarettes, Demis Roussos and nibbles, this horribly compelling evening descends into drunkenness and debauchery. Comedy, drama and tragedy combine into an iconic piece of theatre. Mike Leigh’s comedy became an instant classic when it first appeared in 1977. It’s a ruthlessly accurate observation of the pretensions of suburbia; a world obsessed with class and taste, and ruled over by the monstrous Beverly!

Tue 5 to Sat 9 March 2013 Having broken records on Broadway and played to sold out crowds in London’s West End, winning the 2012 whatsonstage.com Award for Best Revival, David Esbjornson’s smash hit production has dazzled audiences and critics alike. Inspiration for the much-loved Oscar-winning movie, Driving Miss Daisy is the charming, poignant and compelling tale of the unlikely friendship that blossoms between a prickly, elderly southern matriarch, Daisy Werthan and her kind-hearted chauffeur, Hoke Colburn. As the wheels turn and the decades roll by against a backdrop of prejudice, inequality and civil unrest, the pair slowly transcend their differences and ultimately grow to rely on each other far more than either ever expected. Sparklingly funny and irresistibly heart-warming, don’t miss this much-loved play when it visits Edinburgh this Spring.

Theatre Talk (£7.50) Tue 26 Mar 10.30am (p24)
Tue 26 to Sat 30 March 2013 By Nicolai Gogol, translated by Adrian Mitchell, directed by Gerry Mulgrew. Bribes, misdirected contracts, misallocation of public money, fiddled expenses. Panic. Sound familiar? A penniless nobody from the big city arrives in a small town, where he is mistaken for the all-powerful government inspector by its corrupt and self-serving officials. They all have to work together fast to clean up their act – shredding incriminating documents, issuing gagging orders, blacking out the media. The Government Inspector’s hilarious and vicious exposé of the corruption of (petty) power pulls off that rare trick of providing belly laughs and food for thought in a single entertaining evening at the theatre. Winner of the Best Music Award in the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland.

Britain’s best matinee show is back for one final tour!
One of BBC TV’s most popular and fondlyremembered sitcoms comes to the stage with original cast members, Pauline Quirke, Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph. The three stars re-unite in a brand-new show to re-create their adored characters, sisters Sharon Theodopolopoudos and Tracy Stubbs and their sex-mad neighbour, Dorien Green.
Featuring Adam Daye recalling the wonderful radio stars of the period and Marilyn Hill Smith bringing back the music of Vera Lynn and Ivor Novello. Andy Eastwood plays George Formby classics on the ukelele, and your host Mervyn Francis comperes. With the fabulous music of The Martyn St James Band, this is an afternoon show with a fond recollection for Britain’s bygone era; great fun and damp-eyed nostalgia that leaves you with a warm and sentimental glow. The Pitmen Painters has received huge critical acclaim during sell-out seasons at the National Theatre, on Broadway and in the West End. In 1934, a group of Ashington miners took up an art appreciation class and began to paint. Soon prestigious collectors were acquiring their art; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. A humorous, deeply moving look at art, class and politics.
Direct from the West End and Broadway comes ‘a joyous version of the Alfred Hitchcock classic’ (Sunday Times), brilliantly and hilariously recreated as the smash hit Olivier Award-winning Best New Comedy.
