Welcome
With the emergence of Spring we begin to look forward to Edinburgh’s vibrant festivals including Edinburgh International Children’s Festival and Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, both of which you can learn about in this brochure. We await the imminent announcement of Nicola Benedetti’s inaugural Edinburgh International Festival programme which we look forward to hosting. There’s some must-see work from our national companies including Scottish Ballet’s iconic version of A Streetcar Named Desire before they serve us a new double bill Twice-Born, their Christmas cracker Cinders! and in 2024 their much beloved Swan Lake. Meanwhile Scottish Opera brings Carmen, and there’s a new adaptation of Dracula from National Theatre of Scotland. Add to this thrilling drama, magnificent musicals and awe-inspiring dance, plus some child-sized delights and you’ve got a scintillating season!

Our new programme of artist development opportunities, Open@ TheStudio has been welcomed by Edinburgh’s creative community and more exciting opportunities can be found in this brochure. Also in The Studio, the final of our festive early years commissions, Unicorn Christmas Party, will be delighting little ones alongside our other yuletide offering - the Panto.
And I couldn’t leave you without mentioning the Scottish Premiere of Hamilton at the Festival Theatre in Spring 2024. If you want to be ‘in the room where it happens’ then you need to book fast as it’s breaking all box office records! However, do make a date to come and see us before then for one of the many inspiring shows in this brochure.

Scottish Ballet’s hugely popular, award-winning show returns to Scotland for the first time since 2015.
This astonishing take on Tennessee Williams’ famous play is narrative ballet at its very best, with stunning dance, devastating drama, pitch-perfect period design and a sizzling score used to tell the iconic story. The choreography breathes new life into the classic, with intense duets, graceful waltzes and electrifying lindy jives. In steamy 1940s New Orleans, fading Southern belle Blanche DuBois moves into her sister Stella’s apartment. Stella’s brutish husband Stanley sees that Blanche is not what she appears to be, and sets out to destroy her... HHHHH

Based on the Sunday Times bestseller which inspired one of this century’s most treasured films, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel takes us on a journey to India with an eclectic group of British retirees as they embark on a new life. The luxury residence is far from the opulence they were promised, but as their lives begin to intertwine, they are charmed in unexpected and life-changing ways.
Starring Belinda Lang (2 Point 4 Children, Oklahoma!), Paul Nicholas (Jesus Christ Superstar, Just Good Friends, Eastenders), Tessa Peake-Jones (Only Fools and Horses) and Graham Seed (The Archers, The Mousetrap). Also featuring Rekha John-Cheriyan (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Tomb Raider, Hollyoaks), Nishad More (King Lear, My Mother’s Wedding) and Marlene Sidaway (Coronation Street, Pride and Prejudice).
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a joyous comedy about taking risks, finding love and embracing second chances, even in the most surprising of places.

With its raw physical strength, gravity-defying choreography and daring action, Nobody follows 7 characters on their journey to discover who they are. What they present on the exterior might not be what they’re feeling inside.
Packed with visual magic, the world on stage is transformed before our eyes. Digital projections and the shape-shifting set create a constantly changing environment where nothing is quite what it seems…
In Nobody, the action never stops. As the characters negotiate their ever-changing reality, they search for answers as the world unravels around them.
The spectacular strength of the performers makes every throw and lift seem effortless as we follow them through this emotional, but ultimately uplifting story. HHHH

Under the buzzing lights of a psychiatric hospital in Aberdeenshire in 1897, Mina Murray recounts her encounters with the most terrifying of beasts: Dracula. A throng of patients listen with bated breath as they are transported to a world where immortality and ultimate power is possible, even for women - but with terrible consequences...
Not for the faint-hearted, Morna Pearson’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic tale is filled with her trademark humour and taste for the strange and grotesque. This breathtaking gothic production transposes the action to Scotland amid the wild beauty of the landscapes of the north east which originally inspired the novel. With an all-women and non-binary ensemble cast we witness the addiction, intoxication, and empowerment of Mina. Miss this contemporary re-telling at your peril...

Two thrilling works from two of today’s most exciting dance-makers.
Dickson Mbi (UK) is an award-winning choreographer and world-renowned dancer in the Hip Hop dance community, whose collaborators include Robbie Williams, Black Eyed Peas, CHVRCHES and Russell Maliphant. His acclaimed popping skills are integral to the work that he creates today. Scottish Ballet will premiere Twice-Born, Dickson’s first commission for the company. Schachmatt (Checkmate) by Spanish choreographer Cayetano Soto had audiences on their feet at its world premiere. The quirky equestrian-themed ballet sees dancers moving across a giant chessboard.

Remember, remember the 5th of November….
Treason is the new musical drama about the notorious gunpowder plot of 1605, set to completely blow you away with stunning original folk and pop songs. This one-of-akind show tells one of the most intriguing tales in Britain’s history as it’s never been seen before.
Treason explodes onto the stage this Autumn following an online concert streamed worldwide in 2021, two sold-out concerts led by Carrie Hope Fletcher at Theatre Drury Lane in 2022, and a live album released this year, which has taken Spotify by storm. You can be among the first to see the hotly anticipated full production of Treason created by Ricky Allan, as it embarks on its debut UK tour.
Join the Plotters and their world of love, secrecy and revolution in this new British musical.

Scottish Ballet Cinders!
Fri 5 to Sat 20 January 2024
Festival Theatre
Scottish Ballet’s festive favourite returns for the winter season with a new name, glittering new designs, including a stunning art-nouveau set, and a charming twist to the tale.
Set at the turn of the 20th century in Cinders’ family-run emporium, life is sweet until tragedy strikes and the evil, spiky Madame Thorne arrives to take over. With her ghastly daughters and son in tow, the store is turned into a garish version of its former self. When a Royal Ball is announced, hilarity, excitement and chaos ensue as the Thorne family begin their frenzied preparations to attend. Taking refuge in the garden, Cinders meets a cast of fantastical characters amongst the roses and is spun into a vision of beauty, worthy of charming everyone at the ball. Cinders is everything you adore about the enchanted fairy tale – made sparkling, fresh and new.

Hamilton is the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and helped shape the very foundations of the America we know today. The score blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway - the story of America then, as told by America now.

Lose yourself in the raw intensity of this sleek and unmissable ballet, finally returning to Scotland after its sell-out 2016 debut.
The strong, graceful Odette captivates young and lonely Siegfried, their duets powered by emotional honesty. She flies across the stage towards him, flanked by shifting formations of swans. But Siegfried mistakenly betrays his love for the fierce passion of Odile, who whips the air around her into a thrilling physical and psychological frenzy.
Arching backs, spiralling arms and mesmerising patterns push the company dancers to their physical limits in this tale of purity versus seduction. David Dawson’s daring, visceral choreography is perfectly paired with the famous Tchaikovsky score, played live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra.
