Capital Theatres August 2019 brochure

capitaltheatres.com

Welcome to our new brochure which brings an

eclectic programme to our stages through the autumn and winter months of 2019 and into the spring of 2020. After eight years as Chief Executive of Capital Theatres, leading the charitable trust which manages our theatres, I will be hanging up my theatrical boots at the end of December – and this will be my final brochure. It has been an amazing privilege to lead the Capital Theatres’ team and to programme our lovely theatres. The last decade has seen a surge in attendances and a doubling of our turnover, and I think that has been down to the skill of the programming team in curating such an exciting mix of productions and to the wonderful welcome provided by all our staff - both front of house and backstage. I hope you find something in the pages that follow to stimulate and tempt you into our theatres over the coming months and I look forward to bumping into you next year in our theatre foyers, as I move from CEO to customer! Tue 24 to Sat 28 September

Evenings 7.30pm Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm King’s Theatre The National Theatre, producers of War Horse and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time present Shelagh Delaney’s career defining play A Taste of Honey. Bijan Sheibani (Barber Shop Chronicles), directs Jodie Prenger (Oliver!, One Man, Two Guvnors, Abigail’s Party UK tour) as Helen in this new production. When her mother Helen runs off with a car salesman, feisty teenager Jo takes up with Jimmy, a sailor who promises to marry her, before he heads for the seas. Art student Geoff moves in and assumes the role of surrogate parent until, misguidedly, he sends for Helen and their unconventional setup unravels. Written by Shelagh Delaney when she was nineteen, A Taste of Honey is one of the great defining and taboo-breaking plays of the 1950s, offering an explosive celebration of the vulnerabilities and strengths of the female spirit in a deprived and restless world.

This outstanding company make their last EVER visit to Edinburgh this September. They are determined to go out with flying colours so have put together a celebration of this company’s unflagging record of creativity - Richard Alston’s new Voices and Light Footsteps is set to the glorious music of Monteverdi, sensuous and expressive. The world premiere of A Far Cry by Martin Lawrance is set to the impassioned Introduction and Allegro by Edward Elgar. Pieces to live music include Mazur (Chopin) and, hugely popular when it premiered in Edinburgh last year, Brahms Hungarian. Don’t miss out on this visit because after they’re gone, they really are!

Adapted by Kevin MacNeil from his best-selling novel, The Stornoway Way is packed with wit and wisdom, a romantic evocation and scabrous critique of the Isle of Lewis. Roman Stornoway, a struggling musician, and his best friend Eilidh are disaffected underachievers, who use alcohol to fuel and delay their dreams of escape from the island. Eventually they make their way to the city, where Roman is smitten by the mysterious Hungarian student Eva, and things go terribly wrong. Irreverent, humorous and honest, The Stornoway Way is a bittersweet theatrical romcom, twisted, squeezed out and hungover, with a variety of voices from Lewis and an exciting soundtrack featuring Indie originals and traditional songs in Gaelic and English.

Evenings 7.30pm Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm King’s Theatre Following a sold-out run at London’s Hampstead Theatre, don’t miss the astonishing true story of the man who made Hollywood’s greatest divas beautiful. Double Olivier Award-winning Robert Lindsay is “magnetic” (The Guardian), “perfect” (The Times) and “glorious” (Mail on Sunday) in Terry Johnson’s delightfully witty and poignant play based on the extraordinary life of double Oscar-winning cinematic master Jack Cardiff; ‘the man who made women look beautiful’ (Vanity Fair). Also starring Tara Fitzgerald. The legendary Jack Cardiff has retired to the sleepy village of Denham, Buckinghamshire. His days of hard work - and play - on some of the most famous film sets in the world are now long behind him, as are his secret liaisons with some of the most famous women in the world... Surrounded by memorabilia from a lifetime of ‘painting with light’, the writing of an autobiography should be an easy matter - were it not that Jack would now rather live in the past than remember it.

1940s Rome, in the shadow of Mussolini’s tyrannical rule… Floria Tosca – a smart and passionate woman – attempts to free her lover from the clutches of Baron Scarpia, the lecherous, power-mad Chief of Police. As the stakes get higher she is faced with an impossible choice – will her hopes be crushed or can love win out? Beautiful arias and rousing musical moments pepper Puccini’s score, bringing Tosca’s emotional extremes into sharp relief. Director Anthony Besch’s shadowy setting further heightens the drama while Peter Rice’s sumptuous designs provide a spectacular backdrop. Set in the once grand ballroom of The Swan Hotel, Ten Times Table follows the increasingly raucous attempts of a village committee to organise the first Pendon Folk Festival. The opening of the festival, as envisaged by chairman Ray, will be a supposedly uplifting pageant based on an incongruous piece of local history, The Massacre of the Pendon Twelve. As the disparate committee members who include Ray’s wife, Helen, a Marxist school teacher, a military dog breeder and an octogenarian secretary, break into two factions, their wrangling culminates in a scenario that mirrors the original event all too closely.

Evenings 7.30pm Matinees Wed & Sat 2.30pm King’s Theatre Alan Bennett is one our greatest and most celebrated playwrights, with a cavalcade of stage and screen blockbusters including The History Boys, The Madness of King George and Talking Heads. He is applauded as a genius for his sharp character observations and treasured for the way he beautifully balances wit, wistfulness and compassion. In The Habit of Art, Bennett gives us a play about a meeting between two of the 20th centuries most remarkable artists, the poet WH Auden and the composer Benjamin Britten. Exploring friendship, rivalry and heartache this multi-layered masterpiece examines the joy, pain and emotional cost of creativity. This beautifully nuanced production is directed by Philip Franks and stars the Olivier Award-winning Matthew Kelly (Of Mice and Men, Toast and Pride and Prejudice), David Yelland (Chariots of Fire and The Crown) and Veronica Roberts (Peak Practice and Tenko).
