Welcome Since we reopened our doors in June it’s been heartening to see our beloved audiences return to our theatres and experience the buzz of live performance once more. This year we’ve got magical musicals, comedy gold, compelling drama and the very best from our national companies, Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS). Plus it’s never too early to be thinking about next Christmas as we see not only the brilliant ballet returning with The Snow Queen, but also our very own King’s Panto, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, transferred to the Festival Theatre while the King’s undergoes its transformational redevelopment. As well as selecting this mouth-watering programme of touring productions, we’ve

been working on creative endeavours of our own. Our final show in the King’s before it closes for redevelopment will be Sunshine on Leith, our very own co-production with Pitlochry Festival Theatre. What better treat for Edinburgh audiences than a musical which showcases the beauty and brilliance of their hometown to the iconic soundtrack of beloved Leithers The Proclaimers. There’s also our epic co-production of James IV - Queen of the Fight with Raw Material, in association with NTS. We’ll host the world premiere of this piece of landmark theatre in October. Make your 2022 extraordinary at Capital Theatres! Fiona Gibson, CEO Capital Theatres

Evenings Wed to Sat 7.30pm Matinee Thu & Sat 2.30pm Sun 1pm & 5pm Festival Theatre Enter a world of magic and fantasy as Disney’s classic movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks makes its world premiere as an exciting new stage musical. With the original songs by the legendary Sherman Brothers (Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), including Portobello Road, The Age Of Not Believing, The Beautiful Briny, and new music and lyrics by Neil Bartram and book by Brian Hill; Bedknobs and Broomsticks will be brought to life by award-winning theatre-makers Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison. When the three orphaned Rawlins children are reluctantly evacuated from wartime London to live with the mysterious Eglantine Price, they have no idea what adventures lie ahead. Upon discovering Eglantine to be a trainee witch, they join forces to search for a secret spell that will defeat the enemy once and for all. Armed with an enchanted bedknob, a bewitched broomstick and a magical flying bed, they encounter surprising new friendships on their journey from Portobello Road to the depths of the beautiful briny sea.

Evenings 7.30pm Matinee Sat 2.30pm Festival Theatre The year is 1889 and, in the woods outside Vienna, the Empire must hide a terrible secret. At the royal Mayerling hunting lodge, Crown Prince Rudolf is found shot dead alongside his teenage mistress. We rewind the clock to watch this desperate young man, plunge into his own paranoia. In a series of increasingly intense duets with his mother, his wife, and his mistress, Rudolf descends deeper into his obsession with death, and hurtles towards tragedy. Rudolf’s morbid fascination, sexual appetite and ultimate violence make this real-life anti-hero as compelling as Hamlet, while Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s breathtaking choreography takes us on a physical and emotional rollercoaster. The sweeping intensity of the ballet is matched by the sumptuous music of Franz Liszt, performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Reimagined and redesigned by Scottish Ballet, this dramatic world premiere will be the first time MacMillan’s iconic ballet is produced in the UK outside of London.

“…the empathy and ambition of her (Rona Munro) and of Laurie Sansom’s productions…are matched only by their wit, punch and accessibility” The Times

James IV Queen of The Fight Fri 3O September to Sat 8 October Evenings 7.30pm (excl. Sun) Matinees Thur 6 & Sat 8, 2.30pm Festival Theatre Directed by Laurie Sansom Designed by Jon Bausor Music composed by Venus Ex Machina “You’re a wonder. You’re a window into a wide world.” Scotland, 1504, seen fresh through the eyes of new arrivals Ellen and Anne, two Moorish women who were expected to take their place at a royal court....but not this one. Both women now have to fight to find and keep a place in the dazzling, dangerous world of the Scottish Court of James IV. It’s a world where war is never far away, words of love and promises of peace are not what they seem and where poets might turn out to be more dangerous than any assassin. Employing the same wit and theatricality of the first three James Plays, acclaimed playwright Rona Munro takes you back to a thrilling and uncharted period of Scottish history in this brand new production. Join us on the journey.
