& MIXED REPERTOIRE

Greeting from the Artistic Director Welcome to Festival Ballet Theatre’s 2014-2015 season opener at the beautiful Irvine Barclay Theatre! This year marks the 26th Anniversary of our ballet company, and as we celebrate our journey, we reflect on many happy years of sharing the passion for the art of ballet with Orange County audiences. We are very fortunate to share the choreographic talents of Robert Sund and Josie Walsh and the beauty of two George Balanchine ballets. Robert originally staged Alice in Wonderland for us in 2009, and we are happy to bring back this treasure for your enjoyment. Josie has created “Convergence” – a world of colliding opposites using a fusion of modern movement with a strong classical base. Zippora Karz staged Balanchine’s Valse-Fantaisie and Serenade and the dancers have had a wonderful time embracing the technique and style. I know that you will enjoy this performance and remember it for years to come. Our season continues with everyone’s favorite production of The Nutcracker in December, the cherished romantic ballet, Swan Lake, in March, and culminates in August with our highly acclaimed, annual Gala of the Stars. While building a loyal audience base and presenting many new world premiere contemporary works and cherished classical repertoire, we carry out our mission of providing world-class ballet performances in Orange County. During the past few years we have been blessed with marvelous audiences, selling out many of our performances. Thank you for your patronage and support. Thank you for keeping FBT a place for the arts to flourish, and we look forward to seeing you throughout the season.

Alice in wonderland

Synopsis

Since Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1866, children and adults have delighted in the astonishingly absurd and imaginative world Lewis Carroll created for Alice Liddell and her young playmates. Son of a clergyman and a Reader in Mathematics at Christ College Oxford, England, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson published Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. In bringing this literary classic to the ballet stage, Robert Sund has choreographed Alice’s childhood journey of self-discovery and brought all the characters of Wonderland vividly to life. We find Alice, her older sister and their Nanny, together with Lewis Carroll himself enjoying a summer picnic on a “golden afternoon” outside Carroll’s home in Oxford, England. A gifted photographer, Carroll is keen to take pictures of Alice and the party. Suddenly the White Rabbit appears and entices Alice to follow him, and begin her adventure to Wonderland. Sund’s ballet recreates Carroll’s story as we follow Alice down the rabbit hole. Too big to continue, Alice drinks the offered potion and is soon able to enter the door that will bring her into the world of fantasy. Remember, things are never what they appear to be. The Caterpillar becomes a Butterfly and the Cheshire Cat, warning Alice that she has entered a world that doesn’t make sense, vanishes. The White Knight, an artist who is both strong and gallant, introduces himself to Alice. Their idle is interrupted by the White Rabbit and again, Alice sets off in pursuit of him. In her wanderings, Alice finds the comic brothers Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Their dancing and drinking leave Alice sleepy. Alice is then invited by Tiger Lily and her Lily Maidens to join in their celebration. Awake, Alice grows more curious. Despite the Cheshire Cat’s warning, our heroine insists on more adventures, stumbling on the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. All the guests have arrived; the March Hare and the Dormouse as well as the Mad Hatter himself. Leaving the Tea Party, Alice heads off to the seashore with Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Once there she meets the tearful Mock Turtle and the Frog Footman. Alice learns that the Queen of Hearts is hosting a croquet party and all the characters of Wonderland have been invited. Anxious to attend, Alice persuades the Frog Footman to give her an invitation and together they join the Queen and her party. More frightening than foolish, the Queen of Hearts, enraged that Alice has joined her garden fete, orders the Frog Footman executed for his kindness to Alice. Our heroine’s protests are met with the familiar “Off with her head!” When all seems lost, and Alice’s own fate sealed, the White Knight appears and rescues her from the clutches of the Queen and her Court. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland are coming to an end as the White Knight leads her back to the world of Childhood, her family and to Lewis Carroll himself.

Choreographers Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, George Balanchine (19041983) is regarded as the foremost contemporary choreographer in the world of ballet. He came to the United States in late 1933, at the age of 29, accepting the invitation of the young American arts patron Lincoln Kirstein (1907-96), whose great passions included the dream of creating a ballet company and school in America. The School of American Ballet, founded in 1934, was the first product of the Balanchine-Kirstein collaboration. With a performance on October 11, 1948, the New York City Ballet was born. Balanchine served as its ballet master and principal choreographer from 1948 until his death in 1983. Balanchine’s more than 400 dance works include Serenade (1934), Concerto Barocco (1941), Le Palais de Cristal, later renamed Symphony in C (1947), Orpheus (1948), The Nutcracker (1954), Agon (1957), Symphony in Three Movements (1972), Stravinsky Violin Concerto (1972), Vienna Waltzes (1977), Ballo della Regina (1978), and Mozartiana (1981). His final ballet, a new version of Stravinsky’s Variations for Orchestra, was created in 1982. He also choreographed for films, operas, revues, and musicals. Among his best-known dances for the stage is Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, originally created for Broadway’s On Your Toes (1936). The musical was later made into a movie. A major artistic figure of the twentieth century, Balanchine revolutionized the look of classical ballet. Taking classicism as his base, he heightened, quickened, expanded, streamlined, and even inverted the fundamentals of the 400-year-old language of academic dance. Zippora Karz is a former soloist ballerina with the New York City Ballet where she performed for 16 years on stage and in televised performances. She was featured in a variety of roles choreographed by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins (The Sugar Plum Fairy in the Nutcracker being one of her favorites) as well as works choreographed for her by such choreographers as Peter Martins and Lynne Taylor Corbett. Today Miss Karz stages Balanchine ballets all over the world coaching and teaching dance. Miss Karz was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the age of 21 and is passionate today about motivating others to take care of themselves and live their dreams. She is a passionate speaker and motivator, sharing her story as well as her love of movement to all ages from kids to adults. Her memoir, the Sugarless Plum was published November 2009.

Robert Sund began his career as a principal dancer with Pacific Northwest Ballet. Moving on to dance with San Francisco Ballet, he performed soloist and principal roles under the tenure of Michael Smuin, and later Helgi Tomasson. Upon retirement from dancing, Mr. Sund began his career as a choreographer and guest teacher of international acclaim. As a child of deaf parents, he found an innate ability to tell stories through movement. His first full length ballet A Midsummer Nights Dream created for the Norwegian National Ballet, received critical acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Since then, he has created five full length story ballets, two Emmy award winning ballets for television, numerous contemporary works, and gold medal winning works for both national and international competitions and gala evenings. Traveling throughout Europe, Japan, and Central America, Mr. Sund has been invited to guest teach and create original works for companies such as Netherlands Dance Theater, Frankfurt Ballet, Nacional Ballet de Cuba, Stuttgart Ballet, as well as numerous companies around the United States. Most recently, Mr. Sund returned from Japan where he created the pas de deux Firebird for the opening ceremonies of the World EXPO and a new ballet for American Ballet Theatre Studio Company. A native of Los Angeles, Josie Walsh has danced professionally with the Joffrey Ballet, Zurich Ballet and Oregon Ballet Theatre. Josie’s choreographic career began with the Zurich Opera and moved on to several freelance projects throughout Europe.
