A los catorce años, Tomás está entrando en la adolescencia, ese momento de la vida en que no solo hay que enfrentarse a los cambios físicos y emocionales, sino que también algunos recuerdos empiezan a tomar formas más traumáticas. ¿Qué mejor entonces que escapar de eso planeando un viaje a la mismísima Luna? Joaquín Cambre debuta en el largometraje con la historia de una obsesión que toma ribetes de locura, y un personaje que hace equilibrio entre la candidez y la oscuridad, con la imaginación como arma letal.

“Es un coming of age que cuenta las trabas que tiene un chico para crecer, para trascender los problemas familiares y convertirse en alguien fuerte, consciente”, describe su director. “Es una película que explora la locura desde el punto de vista del protagonista Por eso resulta muy sensible y poética aunque tenga una trama bastante clásica. La búsqueda interna para entender la adolescencia y la locura son los motivos que me llevaron a contar esta historia”.

Según Cambre, sus 15 años de experiencia en la realización de cortometrajes, spots publicitarios y videoclips resultaron esenciales.

“Este film resultaba ambicioso en una primera instancia”, cuenta. “Las puestas de cámara y arte son muy meticulosas y conceptuales, entonces tener el ejercicio de filmar rápido sirvió para que me pudiera concentrar fundamentalmente en los actores. Además ya había trabajado muchas veces con los integrantes del equipo, que son brillantes, y eso siempre ayuda”.

D: Joaquín Cambre

At the age of fourteen, Tomás is entering adolescence, that time in your life when not only you have to face physical and emotional changes, but there are also memories that start taking a more traumatic shape – and escaping that by planning a trip to the very Moon seems like the best plan. Joaquín Cambre’s first feature tells the story of an obsession that borders on insanity, with a character balancing between innocence and darkness, with his imagination as a lethal weapon.

“It’s a coming-of-age story that depicts the complications a boy has when he is growing up, transcending family issues and becoming a strong, conscious person,” says the director.

“It’s a film that explores madness from the point of view of the main character. That is why it’s very sensitive and poetic even though the plot is quite classical. An inner search to understand adolescence and madness are some of the reasons that led me to tell this story.”

According to Cambre, his 15 years of experience making short films, advertisements and music videos were essential. “This film proved ambitious at first,” he tells. “The camera positions and the art were very meticulous and conceptual, so having enough experience in shooting on tight schedules was useful for me in order to concentrate mainly on the actors.

Plus, I had already worked many times with the crew members, who are brilliant, and that always helps.”

A partir de la pregunta básica acerca de quiénes son estas personas detrás de los uniformes, Manuel Abramovich –ganador con su ópera prima Solar en Bafici 2016– retrata con precisión la rutinaria vida de un joven voluntario del Regimiento de Infantería 1 Patricios, traduciendo su meticulosa observación en tramos de realidad y ficción.

El resultado es un viaje al interior de una institución plena de formalidades y cierto misterio que, a la vez, se emparenta con su menguante papel protagónico en la realidad política argentina de este siglo.

“Siempre sentí curiosidad por el mundo militar. Me preguntaba cómo era ser soldado en el Ejército argentino en la actualidad, cómo eran los días dentro del regimiento, cómo era el proceso de un joven para convertirse en soldado. Me pasé un mes entero yendo todos los días al regimiento. Pasaba los días observando y conversando con las personas ahí adentro. Luego transcribía mis diálogos y a partir de esos relatos, junto a Aimé Pansera, escribimos un tratamiento que contaba el año de formación de un joven soldado”.

El soldado en cuestión es un joven correntino llamado Juan José González, que recién acababa de unirse al Ejército cuando comenzó la filmación. “Cuando lo conocí, sentía en su forma de mirar algunas contradicciones, como si tuviera dudas sobre lo que estaba haciendo.

Le propuse entonces que fuera el protagonista de la película”, relata Abramovich. “Nosotros filmaríamos algunas partes de su proceso de instrucción como soldado, y quizás en otras partes él actuaría para la cámara, como un actor que en vez de interpretar a un personaje hace de sí mismo”.

Through the basic question of who these people in uniform are, Manuel Abramovich –winner at Bafici 2016 with his first feature, Solar– draws a precise portrait of the routine life of a young volunteer from the First Infantry Regiment “Patricios,” translating his meticulous observation in stretches of reality and fiction.

The result is a journey into an institution filled with formalities and a certain mystery that, at the same time, is linked to its decreasingly important role in this century’s Argentine political reality.

“I always felt curious about the military world.

I wondered what it was like being a soldier in the Argentine army today, how the days were at the regiment, how a young man’s process of becoming a soldier was. I spent an entire month visiting the regiment every day. I would spend the days watching and talking to the people inside. I would then transcribe the dialogue and from those testimonies we wrote a treatment with Aimé Pansera that reflected a young soldier’s year of training.”

“The soldier in question is a young man from Corrientes named Juan José González, who had just joined the Army when shooting began.

When I met him, I felt some contradictions in his views, as though he had doubts about what he was doing. So I asked him to be the film’s protagonist,” says Abramovich. “We would shoot parts of his process of instruction to become a soldier, and perhaps in some other parts he would act for the camera, like an actor who, instead of playing a character, plays himself.”

La telenovela errante Desde su debut con Tres tristes tigres, Raúl Ruiz desarrolló una carrera que lo erigió como uno de los faros del cine contemporáneo. Y ni siquiera su muerte en 2011 pudo poner fin a una filmografía compuesta por más de un centenar de títulos. Para un cineasta que convirtió en sello distintivo la irrupción de lo fantástico en la vida cotidiana –una fantasía que asombra a quien se encuentre fuera del mundo de sus personajes– la muerte no podía ser un impedimento, sino más bien la forma de demostrar su idea del cine. Una serie de hechos ruizianos confabularon y una cofradía formada por Valeria Sarmiento, Chamila Rodríguez y Galut Alarcón llevó a cabo el plan.

Since his debut with Three Sad Tigers, Raúl Ruiz developed a career that turned him into a beacon of contemporary film. And not even his death in 2011 was able to put an end to a filmography made up of about one hundred titles. For a filmmaker who created a trademark of the irruption of the fantastic in everyday life –a fantasy that amazes those who find themselves outside the universe of his characters– death couldn’t be an impediment, but rather the way of exposing his idea about film. A series of Ruiz-inspired events conspired to this end, and a secret brotherhood formed by Valeria Sarmiento, Chamila Rodríguez and Galut Alarcón carried out the plan.

“Un film documental poético, experimental, que se crea sin separar forma y contenido. Que busca hacer converger lo visible y lo invisible, lo real y lo imaginario, de dos adolescentes quienes, durante tres años, se transforman migrando hacia la inevitable vida adulta”.

Así describe Laura Bari –argentina radicada en Canadá– a su película Primas, que según ella viene a cerrar una trilogía de retratos documentales, iniciada con Antoine y Ariel.

Primas no solo describe un vínculo familiar entre dos adolescentes (Rocío y Aldana), sino que discurre alrededor de cómo ambas comparten dolorosas situaciones del pasado y buscan una suerte de exorcismo durante el camino en común hacia la juventudadultez. “Una serie de preguntas genuinas nacen inmediatamente pero, sobre todo, ¿cómo hacen estas dos magníficas chicas para sonreír con tanta integridad, bellísima fuerza y franca resiliencia?”, se interroga Bari.

Así, entre conversaciones y paseos, Rocío y Aldana se liberarán de las sombras de un pasado repleto de abusos. Un relato sucede al otro, y en esas palabras el presente se abre por completo a las heridas de otro tiempo, a un espanto que chocó de frente con sus vidas cambiándolas para siempre.

Pero sus vidas no les pertenecen a sus agresores, ni a los comentaristas ni a los que suponen. El relato es propio de cada una de ellas, que reconocen la maldad y el horror en sus cuerpos, lo miran de frente y lo desafían.

Invisible

“A poetic, experimental film created with no separation between form and content. A film that aims for the convergence of the visible and the invisible, the real and the imaginary, with two teenagers who transform by migrating to the inevitable adult life.” This is how Laura Bari –an Argentine filmmaker based in Canada-– describes her film Primas, which, according to the director, closes a trilogy of documentary portraits started by Antoine and Ariel.

Primas doesn’t just describe the family bond between two teenagers (Rocío and Aldana), but also revolves around the way both of them share some painful situations from the past and seek a kind of exorcism during their common path towards youth-adulthood. “A series of genuine questions arise immediately, but, above all, how do these two magnificent girls manage to smile with such integrity, beautiful strength and frank resilience?,” Bari asks herself.

This way, between conversations and walks, Rocío and Aldana will free themselves from a past that was filled with abuse. One story follows another, and through their words the present opens up completely to the wounds of different time, to terrible situations that collided head on with their lives and changed them forever. Yet their lives do not belong to their aggressors, or to those who comment or suppose they know. The story is their very own, and they acknowledge the evil and the horror in their bodies: they look at it in the eye and challenge it.

Pablo Giorgelli dejó en claro con su primera película, Las acacias (2011), que maneja con gran destreza la posibilidad de acompañar a un personaje, bien de cerca, despojado de prejuicios e intentando encontrar sus costados más interesantes. Con aquel film compitió en la Semana de la Crítica del Festival de Cannes, se llevó tres premios y la prestigiosa Cámara de Oro a la Mejor Ópera Prima de todo el festival.

Ahora, el director argentino posa su lente en Ely en un momento en el que todo parece extraño a su alrededor. Es el preciso instante en que las voces de doctores, docentes, instituciones familiares y estatales, e incluso la de su propia pareja, parecen desajustadas, hechas para una realidad paralela. Ely transita su adolescencia con la fortaleza necesaria para cursar sus estudios secundarios y a la vez trabajar en una veterinaria. Ella es quien sostiene la economía de su hogar, donde su madre vive sumergida en una depresión que no la deja salir de allí. Pero un embarazo no deseado la expone a una realidad que ignora y que pone en jaque toda esa determinación que parecía imbatible. En su segundo largometraje, Pablo Giorgelli acompaña con empatía la formidable interpretación de Mora Arenillas, y mantiene una distancia apropiada. “Es una película paciente, íntima, que se apoya en lo sensorial y no juzga a su personaje sino que lo observa y lo acompaña. Una película en la que mi trabajo debía pasar lo más desapercibido posible”, dice el director.

Pablo Giorgelli made it clear in his first film Las acacias (2011) that he really knows how to follow a character, up close, stripped away from prejudices and trying to find their most interesting sides. That film competed in the Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival, took three awards and the prestigious Golden Camera for Best First Film of the entire Festival.

Now, the Argentine director focuses his lens on Ely at a time when everything around her feels strange. Right when the voices of doctors, teachers, family and government institutions, and even her love partner seem maladjusted, made for a parallel reality. Ely makes her way through adolescence with the strength necessary to face her high school studies and work at a veterinarian’s office. She is the one who provides for her family, where her mother is going through a depression state that keeps her secluded in her apartment. However, an unwanted pregnancy exposes her to a reality that ignores her and puts in check all that determination that seemed unbeatable. In his second feature, Pablo Giorgelli accompanies the wonderful performance by Mora Arenillas with empathy, keeping a proper distance. “It is a patient, intimate film that relies on sensorial elements and does not judge its character, but instead observes her and accompanies her. A film in which my work had to go as unnoticed as possible,” says the director.

La familia Como un notable relato sobre la violencia en Venezuela, La familia muestra la relación padre-hijo a partir de un hecho dramático. En una pelea callejera, Pedro mata por accidente a otro niño que vive en un barrio rival.

Temiendo una segura venganza, su padre Andrés decide llevárselo lo más lejos posible. El escape será peligroso, pero en medio de todo aquello, y más bien por la fuerza, padre e hijo se reencuentran. En su primer largo, Gustavo Rondón Córdova se encarga de darle espacio a una compleja relación y a la dificultad de conformar una sociedad que se piense a sí misma como tal. En su lugar manda una suerte de espíritu de tribu, donde la violencia afecta al más débil. Con estos poderosos elementos, el director logra escapar del cliché de exportación para crear un film honesto y vital.

A remarkable tale about the violence in Venezuela, The Family shows a father-son relationship following a dramatic event. During a street fight, Pedro accidentally kills another kid from a rival neighborhood. Fearing an inevitable revenge, his father Andrés decides to take him as far away as possible. The escape will be dangerous, but in the midst of all that, father and son reunite almost by force. In his first feature, Gustavo Rondón Córdova depicts a complex relationship and reflects how difficult it is to build a society that regards itself as such. Instead, a kind of tribal spirit rules over, where violence affects the weakest. With those powerful elements, the director manages to steer clear from the festival export cliché and create a film that is both honest and full of life.

En su libro Selección oficial, Thierry Frémaux abre las puertas del Festival de Cannes (al que se sumó en 2001 y del cual es Delegado General) de par en par.

Con anécdotas de color pero también profundas reflexiones sobre el estado de las películas, la industria o la crítica, da cuenta de una mirada que puede ser tan irónica como cálida y repleta de destellos de humor.

Frémaux compartirá con el público el proceso de esta publicación de algo más de 600 páginas de cinefilia. Los entretelones de la selección de películas y el armado de un festival gigante incluyen negociaciones, amistades y un sinfín de historias narradas en primera persona por un admirador exigente, que ha desarrollado un acertado olfato para seleccionar cerca de cuarenta películas

Could it have to do with the mix of insecurity and pleasure that invaded me during my teenage years, when I felt that something could be mine –a history, a community, a memory?,” says Frémaux through his chapters, filled with passion and hard work. La Revolución de Octubre (o noviembre, según el calendario gregoriano) fue un hito histórico que atravesó todo el siglo XX y permitió que las vanguardias artísticas de comienzos de ese siglo desarrollaran su potencial aun en las circunstancias menos propicias. Así, artes plásticas, arquitectura, literatura, teatro, música y, por supuesto, cine (“la más importante de todas las artes”, según el propio Lenin) fueron el campo de desarrollo de los nuevos conceptos que proponían dejar atrás las prácticas y alcances sociales del arte burgués.

Las vanguardias, en especial las desarrolladas en la Unión Soviética, se alejaron del concepto esteticista del “arte por el arte”, rompieron con la tradición realista, asumieron un compromiso social y se potenciaron con el triunfo de la Revolución asumiendo el ideario de la construcción de una nueva sociedad y de un hombre nuevo. Los artistas se apoyaron en una actitud de constante experimentación. En la abstracción de las formas buscaron reflejar la vida moderna. Conformaron colectivos, escribieron manifiestos y generaron intensas polémicas entre ellos.

En los años 30, con la consolidación del stalinismo, y habiéndose decretado el llamado “realismo socialista” como arte oficial, se iría asfixiando la creatividad artística.

Aquel denostaba el formalismo en todas las artes y subordinaba la producción artística a los dictados y la exaltación del líder y de la creciente burocracia soviética, reprimiendo a todos aquellos que no lo acataron.

The October Revolution (or November, according to the Gregorian calendar) was a historical milestone that pierced through the entire 20th century and allowed for the artistic vanguards to develop their potential, even under unfavorable circumstances. This way, visual arts, architecture, literature, theater, music and, of course, film (“the most important of all arts,” according to Lenin himself) enabled the development of the new concepts that intended to leave behind the practices and social reaches of Bourgeoise art.

Vanguards, especially those developed in the U.S.S.R., distanced themselves from the aestheticist concept of “art for art’s sake,” left behind the realist tradition, assumed a social commitment and strengthened themselves with the triumph of the Revolution by embracing the ideology that aimed to construct a new society and a new man.

The artists took up an attitude of constant experimentation. In the abstraction of forms, they sought to reflect modern life. They formed collectives, wrote manifestos and generated intense controversies among themselves.

In the ‘30s, with the consolidation of Stalinism, and the so-called “socialist realism” ruling official art, artistic creativity would start to asphyxiate. It condemned formalism in every art form and subordinated artistic production to the dictates and the exaltation of both the Leader and the growing Soviet bureaucracy, repressing all those who didn’t comply with it.

Una vida de cine A Lifetime of Cinema Leyenda viviente del cine francés, Claude Lelouch volvió al Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata, que lo recibió hace más de cinco décadas, para presentar una retrospectiva de sus films.

A living legend of French Cinema, Claude Lelouch returned to the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, who had him more than five decades ago, to present a retrospective of his films.

Cuando el Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata lo premió como Mejor Director por Una chica y los fusiles (1965), Claude Lelouch tenía 28 años. Al año siguiente, conseguiría la Palma de Oro en Cannes y dos Oscar con Un hombre y una mujer. Desde entonces, la prodigiosa carrera de este invitado especial del 32º Festival incluyó más de 59 películas, y unos cuantos viajes a nuestro país. “No lo conozco, pero lo amo”, nos contó antes de partir. “No sé por qué. Vine cuatro o cinco veces, sobre todo a Buenos Aires, y cada vez que venía me sentía en casa”. ¿Cómo representan a su filmografía las películas que conforman esta retrospectiva del Festival?

Una chica y dos fusiles tuvo su premiere en el Festival de Mar del Plata en 1965, por eso la elegí. Es una película más bien amateur, pero representa mucho para mí. Un hombre y una mujer es obviamente el film que me dio éxito y, por ende, me dio libertad para hacer lo que quisiera. Los unos y los otros fue una película muy importante en Argentina, teniendo en cuenta la presencia del bailarín Jorge Donn en la secuencia final. Y Chacun sa vie es mi última película, por lo que permite tomar la temperatura de lo que estoy haciendo en la actualidad.

Es una selección arbitraria; si hubiese querido podría haber propuesto 20 films, pero creo que igual representan bien el viaje que he emprendido en mi vida. ¿Cómo fueron sus inicios en el cine?

Es una historia larga, pero no es más que una historia de amor. Amo el cine como otros amarían a una mujer. ¡Amo a las mujeres, también! Lo primero que me gustó fue el circo y después me llevaron al cine. Me di cuenta de que en la pantalla estaban las mismas personas que estaban en la calle pero eran algo así como modelos terminados, perfeccionados; al menos eso era lo que yo veía. Cuando me percaté de esa diferencia entre las personas que veía en la pantalla y las personas comunes, me dije: “Quisiera frecuentarlas más”. Yo salía del cine y me ponía triste: la vida era menos buena fuera de él. Y me di cuenta de que esa era la vida que yo quería llevar.

Me enamoré del cine a los cinco o seis años, y tuve mucha suerte porque pude

transformar una distracción en un trabajo.

Me enamoré del cine, de las mujeres y de la vida, todo al mismo tiempo. ¡Las mujeres que estaban en la pantalla también eran mucho más bellas! Las historias que les pasaban a los personajes eran mejor que las me contaban mis amigos o la gente que conocía. Con el cine aprendí que amo el presente más que cualquier otra cosa: el cine filma el presente, que es lo único que realmente nos pertenece. Además el presente no envejece: me enamoré también de él. ¿Tiene esa relación con sus películas cuando las ve hoy? ¿Siente que está mirando el presente?

Cuando las veo hoy pienso que las hizo otra persona. Cambié mucho desde ese entonces, así que las miro como espectador. Me siento raro, no me gusta demasiado verlas. Justamente, es como ver el pasado, y ver el pasado es tomar un muerto en tus brazos. Los grandes placeres de la vida tienen lugar en el presente; el resto es para los intelectuales. ¡Yo adoro a los intelectuales! Pero no quiero tenerlos de amigos… no me interesan para nada.

Aprecio mucho a los realizadores de la Nouvelle Vague, porque fueron mis contemporáneos y me mostraron lo que no tenía que hacer. Pero sus películas me parecen horribles. ¿Qué recuerdos tiene de aquella famosa secuencia final de Los unos y los otros?

El bolero de Ravel es la mejor música para cualquier película. Está construida por los latidos del corazón, y sabía que ese sería el corazón de la película. Es el momento en que todos los personajes del film se encuentran. Cuando vi al argentino Jorge Donn bailándolo dije: “Es él”. Durante un año nos reunimos junto con él y el coreógrafo Maurice Béjart para pensar esa escena; fue un año mágico. Cuando salió el film, Jorge me agradeció y me dijo: “Finalmente soy conocido en Argentina”.

Era un hombre realmente encantador, que vivió una historia de amor adorable con Béjart. En mi vida me he encontrado con personas de todo tipo; simplemente hay personas que son menos asquerosas que otras. He tenido la suerte de construir mi vida alrededor de esas personas.

When the Mar del Plata International Film Festival gave him the Best Director award for The Decadent influence (1965), Claude Lelouch was 28. The following year, he would win the Palm d’Or at Cannes and two Oscars for A Man and a Woman. Since then, the prodigious career of this special guest of the 32nd Festival included more than 59 films, and quite a few trips to our country. “I don’t know it, but I love it,” he told us before he left. “I don’t know why. I came four or five times, mainly to Buenos Aires, and every time I came I felt at home.”

How do the films that make up this retrospective from the Festival represent your work?

The Decadent Influence had its premiere at the Mar del Plata Film Festival in 1965, and that’s why I chose it. It was quite amateurish, but it means a lot to me. A Man and a Woman is obviously the film that made me successful and, therefore, it gave me freedom to do whatever I wanted to do. Bolero was a very important film in Argentina due to the presence of dancer Jorge Donn in the final sequence. And Everyone’s Life is my latest film, so it allows people to see what I’m doing at the moment. It’s an arbitrary selection; if I wanted I could have proposed 20 films, but I think they represent the journey I’ve embarked on during my life very well.

How were your beginnings in film?

It’s a long story, but it’s nothing but a love story. I love film as much as others would love a woman. I love women, too! The first thing I liked was the circus, and then they took me to the movies. I realized that the same kind of people I saw on the street were on the screen, but they were some kind of finished, perfected models; at least that’s what I saw. When I realized about that difference between the people I saw on the screen and common people, I said to myself, “I would like to see more of them.” I would leave the theater and get sad -life was less good outside. And I realized that was the life I wanted to live. I fell in love with film at the age of five or six, and was very lucky because I was able to

turn a distraction into a job. I fell in love with film, with women, with life, all at the same time. The women on the screen were also much more beautiful! The stories that happened to the characters were better than the ones my friends or the people I knew told me. With cinema I learned that I love the present more than any other thing -cinema films the present, which is the only thing that really belongs to us. Besides, the present doesn’t age -I fell in love with it two.

Do you have that kind of relationship with your films when you see them today? Do you feel you’re looking at the present?

When I see them I think someone else made them. I changed a lot since then, so I see them as a spectator. I feel weird; I don’t really like watching them. Precisely because it’s like looking at the past, and looking at the past is taking a dead person in your arms. The great pleasures in life occur in the present –the rest is for intellectuals. I love the intellectuals! But I don’t want to have them as friends… I’m not interested in them at all. I appreciate the French New Wave filmmakers very much, because they were contemporary to me and showed me what I didn’t have to do. But their films seem awful to me.

What memories do you have of that famous final sequence in Bolero?

Ravel’s bolero is the best music for any film.

It’s made out of heartbeats, and I knew that it would be the heart of the film. It is the moment when all the characters in the film meet. When I saw Argentine artist Jorge Donn dancing it I said, “It’s him.” I had a year of meetings with him and choreographer Maurice Béjart in order to think of that scene; it was a magical year. When the film came out, Jorge thanked me and told me, “I’m finally known in Argentina.” He was a really charming man, who lived an adorable love story with Béjart. In my life I have found people of all kinds; some people are less disgusting than others. I had the luck of building my life around those people.

Esta noche, la sala 1 del Paseo Aldrey será el lugar en el cual se proyectarán aquellos cortos premiados por CINE.AR. Los títulos El mes del amigo (Florencia Percia), Clausura (Jesús Barbosa), Sueños del Paine (Esteban Degregori), No hay bestias (Agustina San Martín), Puelo Park (Fabián Soto, Emmanuel Olivares, Bruno Ruiz y Rafael Rigonatto) y La revancha (Pablo Bochard) serán los exhibidos en este programa que, en algo menos de 80 minutos, se adentran en siete universos bien diferentes entre sí. Esta es la posibilidad para descubrir en estas obras de pocos minutos y mucha fuerza a interesantes realizadores argentinos.

EXPRESO DE MEDIANOCHE — MIDNIGHT EXPRESS

Lowlife Súbitamente, como tormenta de verano, en la edición de 1997 del Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata –dos décadas atrás– se produjo un quiebre en la médula de la filmografía local. Pizza, birra, faso, película codirigida por los jóvenes Israel Adrián Caetano y Bruno Stagnaro, erigió una renovación: sin proponérselo directamente, fue la piedra fundamental en la que se basó la construcción de un nuevo cine argentino. La película reflejaba, de una manera naturalista, la vida cotidiana de un grupo de jóvenes que sobrevivían en la urbe a fuerza de cometer pequeños delitos. Y que tenían a la comida chatarra, la cerveza y los cigarrillos como elementos de subsistencia.

A la sazón, en su entramado, el cine terminó dejando su huella de realidad: la Buenos Aires sexy de Menem se chocó de frente con la violencia, el desempleo, la opresión y la inminente crisis política e institucional. Pizza, birra, faso está contada desde el corazón de la marginalidad. Ni arriba, ni abajo, ni al centro: adentro. El relato de periferias se aleja de la idea de un cine artificioso y a destiempo que venía asomando torpemente desde los años ochenta.

Por eso, claro, esa pureza en la mirada significó un navajazo cultural: después de su estreno, el cine nacional nunca volvería a ser el mismo.

En 1992, Rapado de Martín Rejtman adelantó las señales de cambio. Por ahí también flotaban no tan inocentemente Picado fino de Esteban Sapir, Graciadió de Raúl Perrone, Buenos Aires viceversa de Alejandro Agresti y ¡Que vivan los crotos! de Ana Poliak. Todos relatos enmarañados por debajo de la loza de los medios masivos de comunicación y del arte en general. Pizza, birra, faso, con sus dimensiones estéticas entre el Dogma 95, el neorrealismo italiano y la creación de sus propios símbolos, es la película que mejor definió a una época: la de los espacios urbanos y la vida de los hombres a pie representados en la potencia inmarcesible de la gran pantalla.

Suddenly, like a summer storm, a big change occurred in local cinema during the 1997 edition of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, two decades ago. Pizza, Beer, and Cigarettes, a film co-directed by the young Israel Adrián Caetano and Bruno Stagnaro, started a renovation. It set the foundations for the building of New Argentine Cinema, even if they didn’t actually intend to do so. The film reflected in a naturalist way the everyday life of a group of young people who survived in the city through petty crimes. And their sustenance was based on junk food, beer and cigarettes.

At the time –and through its plot– the film left a trace of reality: Menem’s sexy Buenos Aires collided head-on with violence, unemployment, oppression and the imminent political and institutional crisis. Pizza, Beer, and Cigarettes storytelling emerges from the heart of marginality –not above it, not below it, not in its center: inside of it. The tale of the outskirts distances itself from the notion of artificial, out-of-phase cinema that had been clumsily appearing since the eighties. Of course, that is why the purity in its viewpoint signified a stab on the culture of the time: after its release, local cinema would never be the same again.

In 1992, Martín Rejtman’s Rapado signaled that change ahead of time. The case is quite similar in films like Esteban Sapir’s Fine Powder, Raúl Perrone’s Graciadió, Alejandro Agresti’s Buenos Aires Vice Versa and Ana Poliak’s Long Live the Hobos. All of them were tales that built up under the rugs of mass media and art in general. With its aesthetic dimensions set amidst Dogma 95, Italian neorealism and the creation of its own symbols, Pizza, Beer, and Cigarettes is the film that best defined an era: a time of urban areas and the life of everyday people reflected by the unfading power of the big screen.

En una Los Ángeles violenta se cruzan las vidas de aquellos que transitan los suburbios, los que hacen equilibrio fuera de la ley. Un lugar en el que una famosa figura de la lucha libre puede enredarse en el oscurísimo mundo del tráfico de órganos. Detrás de ese velo, la adrenalina de saber que en cualquier momento algo siniestro puede suceder. El debut del estadounidense Ryan Prows es un disparo certero al estómago del thriller más sórdido, con la urgencia de aquellos films de superacción en los que la estela de los golpes lleva consigo un realismo feroz.

Lowlife juega con los tiempos y las tramas corales –ahí su relación obligada con el cine de Tarantino– y flirtea con los géneros de medianoche. Pero, aunque su mundo pueda inscribirse en el universo grindhouse (además de truculenta es divertidísima), la película de Prows entrega pistas por las que podemos intuir que tenemos entre manos el comienzo de una carrera que promete grandes momentos de satisfacción cinéfila.

In a violent Los Angeles, the lives of those who move through the suburbs mix with those who are balancing in and out of the law. It’s a place where a famous wrestler can get tangled in the dark world of organ trafficking. Behind that veil, there is the adrenaline of knowing that something sinister can happen at any given moment.

The directorial debut of American filmmaker Ryan Prows is a well-aimed shot to the stomach of the most sordid form of thriller, with the same urgency of those action movies where the trail left by the blows carries a ferocious realism. Lowlife plays with time and ensemble plots – associating it to Tarantino is inevitable– and flirts with midnight genres. But even though its world can be inscribed within the grindhouse universe (apart from being gruesome, it’s a lot of fun), Prows’ film gives out clues that suggest we have on our hands the beginning of a career that promises great moments of cinephile satisfaction.

Figura clave de la resistencia cinematográfica en los Balcanes, Zelimir Zilnik viene al 32º Festival a presentar una exhaustiva retrospectiva de su obra.

A key figure of film resistance in the Balkans, Zelimir Zilnik comes to the 32nd Festival to present a thorough retrospective of his work.

La obra de Zelimir Zilnik, miembro icónico de la llamada Ola Negra, abarca los últimos 50 años de historia yugoslava.

Su cámara registró las protestas estudiantiles de 1968, fue testigo del ascenso al poder de Milosevic, registró las congregaciones posteriores en contra del régimen, y calcificó la transición final del país hacia el capitalismo.

Nuevo Cine Alemán, como Fassbinder, tenían opiniones muy intensas sobre la política cultural de Yugoslavia por haber visto nuestras películas, así que no les podía decir que me habían censurado; se habrían reído de mí. Así que dije que había ido ahí para hacer películas sobre gente que iba a trabajar a Alemania, que es lo que había hecho yo.

¿Cuál fue el origen de la llamada “Ola Negra” en Yugoslavia?

Esa expresión no fue algo que hayamos inventado los cineastas. En los años sesenta, la atmósfera era más libre para las nuevas perspectivas sobre el arte y los medios, y empezamos a hacer películas que reflejaban al estado socialista, pero sin una aproximación de propaganda.

Pero ocurrió un drástico cambio en el 68, cuando la Unión Soviética ocupó Checoslovaquia, que era socialista pero con una posición más abierta similar a la de Tito. Surgió una cuestión: ¿qué sucedería con esa forma de construir una sociedad socialista, si esos mismos principios habían sido pisoteados y dejados de lado? Cambió la cultura política, y se nos proclamó como la “Ola Negra”: los que observábamos a la sociedad a través de anteojos negros.

Black Film, la película que le otorgaría un Oso de Oro en la Berlinale, terminaba con una pregunta: “El cine: ¿arma o mierda?”. ¿Cree que el cine todavía puede ser un arma política poderosa?

Podemos decir que es claro que la mayor parte del cine se trata de cuentos de hadas de Hollywood proyectados en cines enormes, principalmente para chicos. Pero por fuera de eso existen otras cincuenta plataformas en las que podés ver imágenes en movimiento, como Internet o Facebook, así que la presencia de imágenes en movimiento como información es mucho más accesible ahora que hace cincuenta años, cuando teníamos que chequear el material en una sala de proyección. Además, todos los años veo películas que traen los temas más críticos y peligrosos para los estamentos dominantes del mundo, de una forma que ningún otro medio lo hace. Solo piensen en The Act of Killing, de Joshua Oppenheimer. Sigo creyendo que la existencia de películas y el cine mismo tienen un sentido.

Esa etiqueta lo terminaría llevando a irse a Alemania para poder trabajar.

The oeuvre of Zelimir Zilnik, an iconic member of the so-called Black Wave, encompasses the last 50 years of Yugoslavian history. His camera was there for the student protests of 1968, witnessed Milosevic’s rise to power, and captured the subsequent rallies against his regime, and calcified the country’s final transition to capitalism.

What was the origin of the so-called Black Wave?

That expression was not something invented by us filmmakers. In the sixties, the atmosphere was more liberal for new views in art and media, and we started making films reflecting the reality of our state socialism, but without a propaganda approach. But there was a severe change in ‘68 when the Soviet Union occupied Czech Republic, which was socialist and more similar to the more open Tito way. There was this big question: what was going to happen to that approach of building a socialist society, when those very principles had been somehow stomped and put aside? The political culture changed, and we were proclaimed the “Black Wave”: the people who were observing society with black sunglasses.

That label would ultimately result in you going to Germany to be able to work.

A fun effect is that when I went to Germany, some of the filmmakers who had been forming

the New German Wave, their opinion about cultural politics in Yugoslavia witnessing our films was so strong that I could not say I had been banned, they would have laughed at me. So I said I was there to start making films about people who went to Germany to work, which is what I did.

Black Film, the film that would won you a Golden Bear at the Berlinale, ended up with a question: “The cinema –weapon or shit?”.

Do you think cinema is still a powerful political tool?

We can say, of course, that most cinemas are showing fairy tales from Hollywood in these big theaters to, mostly, children. But besides that, we have fifty other platforms where you can watch moving images, like the internet or Facebook, so the presence of moving images as information is much more achievable than fifty years ago, when we had to check the material in a big screening room. And also, every year I see films bringing up the most critical and dangerous topics for the ruling strata of the world, like no other media does.

Just think about Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing. I do believe that the existence of films and filmmaking has a significance.
